Living your “best life” is a popular goal, especially in a time marked by rising stress, division and disconnection.

The Global Wellness Summit’s Future of Wellness Report found that 82% of U.S. consumers consider wellness a top priority. Yet, the American Psychiatric Association reports record levels of loneliness with many respondents feeling disconnected from friends, family or the world—an epidemic with health effects as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

The State of the Nation Project also recently released a revealing report, which found that most participants shared that “their life satisfaction is in decline.”

“Mental health has moved from the sidelines to center stage in the global wellness conversation,” data and research firm NielsenIQ reported in February. “No longer just a personal priority, it’s a societal imperative…embraced as an integral part of daily life.”

As self-care evolves from a luxury to a necessity, the real question becomes: How do we achieve true well-being?

We decided to highlight real-life stories and first-person perspectives that we hope help drive conversations—radical honesty that tackles such topics as mental health, identity and loss. Cristi López opens up about navigating mental illness and sexuality, while shedding the cultural shame of her traditional upbringing. Dr. Uché Blackstock confronts a flawed medical system that subjected her to neglect due to the color of her skin. Anna Hummel discusses her battle with depression following a career collapse when all her normal coping strategies failed. And Gary King and Adam Peters reveal how they chose to audaciously embrace happiness in the face of life-changing tragedies.

These stories illustrate how personal adversities can be used as learning opportunities to foster resilience and offer insights to others facing similar challenges—a gentle reminder that healing often begins with connection.

Tierra Verde

Just minutes from the vibrant energy of downtown St. Petersburg lies an island retreat that remains one of Florida’s best-kept secrets. Tierra Verde is a naturally elevated, water-wrapped sanctuary—home to boaters, professionals, and families who embrace space, peace, and purposeful living.

Once sacred ground to the Tocobaga tribe, this island still feels protected in more ways than one. Even during the 2024 hurricane season—when Hurricane Helene brushed the coast and Hurricane Milton followed just weeks later with a direct path—Tierra Verde stood strong.

While nearby beach towns suffered major flooding and damage, Tierra Verde experienced only minor issues, mostly limited to garages or storage areas below 8 feet of elevation. For most homeowners, the living space remained dry, secure, and untouched. Locals refer to it as the first time in recent memory the island saw any significant flooding—and even then, the island handled it with resilience and grace.

And yet, the market shifted.

Uncertainty led to hesitation. More listings came up, prices dipped—and now, buyers with vision have a rare opportunity to invest in a lifestyle that’s both resilient and refined. Whether you’re seeking deep-water dockage, open water views, or a move-in-ready coastal home, Tierra Verde has it—without the chaos of beach crowds or the wear-and-tear of exposed barrier islands.

This isn’t just a paradise for vacationers. It’s home to professionals, retirees, second-home owners, and families who know how to live well.

You’ll find kids riding bikes and golf carts to friends’ houses, neighbors chatting on evening walks, and long- time residents who don’t even lock their doors (shhh—don’t tell anyone). There’s a sense of ease and trust that comes naturally when you live on an island like this.

Although there’s no public beach on Tierra Verde itself, locals have full access to Shell Key—a pristine barrier island just a short paddle, walk, or boat ride away. It’s the island’s private playground: white sand, crystal water, no crowds. It’s where residents go to unwind, explore, and soak in unspoiled nature.

Thinking of relocating from out of state? You won’t be the only one. Most of the island’s residents came from somewhere else, which creates an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re a family, a young professional, or a snowbird seeking a second home, you’ll find it easy to plug into the local vibe.

The Tierra Verde Women’s Club, Men’s Club, and even the active Rotary Club of Tierra Verde offer opportunities for friendship, community involvement, and service. For those interested in environmental work, Tampa Bay Watch, just next door, is a hub for hands-on conservation and volunteer efforts that keep this region beautiful.

And while it may feel like a private island, Tierra Verde is still officially part of Pinellas County — with most of the land under county jurisdiction. The Sheriff’s Department even has a nickname for it: “The Rock.” So when deputies come out here, they’re not just working—they’re serving The Rock. It’s a little inside joke, but it speaks volumes about the island’s identity: strong, proud, and quietly set apart.

Whether you’re looking for deep-water dockage, wide-open views, or a private retreat near the action, there’s one person who knows the island inside and out: Blanka Prusova-White, Broker Associate with Coastal Properties Group | Forbes Global Properties. As a longtime resident, international transplant, and local expert, she understands every nuance of life on Tierra Verde—from elevation levels to boating depths, hidden gems, and architectural details you won’t find in a listing. If you’re ready to discover the island life — and make it yours — she’s your best connection.

GOOD GRONK

Four-time Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski is living his “best life” by focusing on wellness, philanthropy and enterprising business pursuits.

Gronkowski, known as “Gronk” to his fans, is in fine form when we settle in for a chat, excitedly sharing his thoughts on a variety of topics and peppering the conversation with spontaneous and playful declarations like “baby!” and “poppin!” He admits that he’s a big kid at heart, which is fitting since he also has such a big heart for kids and gets so much joy from giving back.

“My family and I started the Gronk Nation Youth Foundation about 10 years ago. The main mission of the foundation is to give kids opportunities to succeed. I had a wonderful childhood and everything I needed growing up,” he shares. “We want to give kids access to what they need to be successful. I love to give these kids some of the same opportunities that I had. It’s a humbling experience. What’s special about it is being there in person to see the smiles on the kids’ faces. Even just to take a picture with the kid who's been watching me since he was 4 and now he's 14 years old, that’s when it really hits you. To be a role model for these kids, that’s a great feeling right there.”

In late March, the foundation contributed $315,000 to the Tampa Bay Resiliency Fund, which is a joint effort between the Pinellas Community Foundation, United Way Suncoast and the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg. The donation supports local nonprofits that provide disaster relief, food access, mental health support and housing assistance for residents affected by hurricanes.

“So many people supported me throughout my career,” he explains. “I just want to give back to those people and the communities that have been there for me. I'll always be a part of the Tampa Bay community, especially after winning the Super Bowl here.”

This Gronk stands in stark contrast to the one who got emotional at a press conference six years ago when he described the physical and mental pain that he’d experienced during his football career.

“I want to be clear. I needed to recover. I was not in a good place,” he said at the time, describing his decision to retire from football the first time.

“Football was bringing me down and I didn’t like it. I was losing that joy in life,” he continued, tears welling up in his eyes. “I’m sorry…I really was fighting through it. I knew what I signed up for and I knew I had to fix myself. I believe I have great people around me…and I am on the right path in my life.”

His openness and vulnerability helped reduce the stigma around mental health issues, inspiring other men to speak out about their struggles.

He made a triumphant, albeit short-lived return, to the sport in 2020, when he reunited with Tom Brady to play for

the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played with the team for two seasons, winning a Super Bowl in his first season back, before leaving the sport for good. He acknowledged that he could leave with his head held high, “knowing I gave it everything I had, good or bad, every time I stepped out on the field."

These days he’s soaking in the good with longtime partner Camille Kostek, especially since he spends so much time in our area, which he says is ideal for maintaining his well-being.

“The Tampa Bay community is just such a special place. St. Pete, Clearwater and Tampa are the trifecta of cities down here,” he asserts. “Just being able to wake up with the sunshine, throw on a shirt, shorts and sandals and get outside feels good, whether that is at a park or out on the water in a boat. I’m an outdoors guy, so I love being out in nature. That's what makes this area so special. It has so much to offer.”

Doing jigsaw puzzles has also become an important part of his wellness routine.

"It just lowered my stress levels,” he’s said of discovering this hobby. “I just needed to find some downtime to just relax. I started one this morning at 7:30 and it was the quickest two hours of my week. All of a sudden 9:30 hit and I had to go do my workout and I was all disappointed, because I wanted to sit there and keep doing the puzzle. That's what I love to do to keep my mind busy and sharp.”

But it’s not just relaxation and physical fitness that has him feeling good. He has also been focused on a number of successful business ventures and endorsement deals with partners who echo the combination of leadership and camaraderie that he found on the football field. He’s particularly proud of

the family business, Gronk Fitness, of which he says, “We’ve been expanding big time over the last couple of years.”

He has also partnered on a new casual restaurant concept and recently made a surprise appearance at the St. Pete location.

“Greenlane is a fantastic drive-through restaurant where you can get a nutritious salad or a wrap for just under $10. They’re nutritious and well-balanced, and they really fill you up.

Through his brand associations, Gronk has aligned with companies that reflect his lifestyle, like his long-term partnership with BYLT Basics, which offers a dynamic fusion of fitness and style.

"I feel like my whole wardrobe is BYLT,” he says of the collection, which he wears on our cover and accompanying portraits. “BYLT has some of the most comfortable clothes I have ever worn and that's what I'm looking for. I know when I look good, I feel good, and when I feel good, I can perform to the best of my abilities.”

With this vibrant energy on full display, Gronk is clearly back in fighting shape and diving into his best life with an unabashed enthusiasm.

“Oh man, I'm feeling good! That's for sure. I have learned how to take care of my body and overcome the injuries I had during my career, so I can just go about my day with no problem and live a happy and healthy lifestyle,” he offers. “I stay active and keep busy. That's why I love being down here in the Tampa Bay area, because when you wake up and it is 80 degrees outside it makes you want to stay active. And helping to give kids the support they need to succeed and to live a healthy lifestyle is awesome."

GOOD WELL

THE CURRENT CROP OF WELLNESS TRENDS REFLECTS A GROWING DESIRE FOR BALANCE, BLENDING MODERN SCIENCE WITH NATURAL HEALING AND JOYFUL MOVEMENT.

GUT HEALTH

Gut health remains a hot topic with increased recognition of its impact on digestion, immunity, mental well-being and longevity. Personalized microbiome testing, targeted supplements and gut-friendly foods are gaining momentum as people seek tailored approaches to optimize their health from the inside out.

DIGITAL DETOX

With screen time at an all-time high, digital detoxing is essential for mental clarity and emotional well-being. Whether it’s an hour a day offline or an unplugged weekend retreat, stepping away from devices helps foster personal connections and reduce stress.

RECONNECTING WITH NATURE

More than a simple walk around the block, immersing yourself in nature can be a powerful remedy for modern-day stressors. Practices like forest bathing (Shinrin-yoku) promote relaxation, lower blood pressure and boost mental clarity. So kick off your shoes and go hug a tree.

HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY

HBOT is emerging as a cutting-edge tool for cognitive enhancement and recovery. By delivering high levels of oxygen to the bloodstream, it helps reduce inflammation, alleviate stress and support brain health—making it popular among high performers and wellness seekers.

INFRARED SAUNAS & RED-LIGHT THERAPY

These therapies have gained popularity for their ability to ease inflammation, boost circulation and support muscle recovery. Whether post-workout or part of a self-care regimen, they offer rejuvenation and performance benefits.

BEAUTY AS WELLNESS

Cosmetic treatments are now considered an essential part of modern wellness, as they boost confidence and enhance overall well-being. Non-invasive procedures like Botox for neck rejuvenation (the Nefertiti Lift) and laser treatments for

skin texture and sun damage offer subtle yet effective enhancements without major downtime.

PLAY-BASED EXERCISE

Who says fitness can’t be fun?

The popularity of play-based workouts—such as pickleball, beach volleyball, amateur sports leagues and physical activity social groups—creates positive social connections while making it easier to consistently stay active and motivated.

BREAKING the SILENCE

Exploring men's mental health challenges and the vital importance of seeking support.

Every morning at sunrise, Luis jogs the length of the St. Pete Pier. To most, he looks like any other guy trying to stay fit. What they don’t see is that running is his therapy—his way of managing anxiety that he’s never spoken to a professional about. For men like Luis, movement is medicine. But what happens when it’s not enough?

At Crescent Lake Park, David watches his toddler climb the jungle gym. He’s laughing on the outside, but inside, the weight of job stress, financial strain and the unspoken pressure to "be strong" are wearing him down. Exhausted, but unwilling to admit it, he tells himself it’s just part of life.

After years of hard work, Joe retired to St. Pete for the sunshine and slower pace. But instead of peace, he found loneliness creeping in. He didn’t talk about it. Instead, he started drinking more, brushing off his wife’s concern with, “I’m fine.”

It wasn’t until he had an argument with an old friend, which escalated faster than it should have, that he paused and wondered, “What’s happening to me?”

Luis, David and Joe are composite characters, but their experiences are real-life reflections of the various struggles of modern men. Across all ages and backgrounds, many men struggle with their mental health. The problem is, they don’t often recognize it— or if they do, they downplay it.

“Men often struggle to raise their hands and say, ‘Hey, I need some help,’ because they’ve been taught that doing so is a sign of weakness. In reality, it’s the opposite—it’s actually a demonstration of strength,” offers Dr. Jonathan Mitchell, a clinical psychologist in the Family Medicine Residency program at Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only about one in four men experiencing mental health challenges

seek professional help, compared to nearly half of women. That reluctance has roots in cultural conditioning. Boys often grow up hearing phrases like "man up" and "don't cry," subtle but powerful messages that teach them emotions are best kept locked away. That mindset can carry into adulthood.

But ignoring mental health issues doesn’t make them disappear. They often just become something else—irritability, outbursts of anger, drinking too much, withdrawing from relationships and even physical symptoms like headaches or digestive issues.

“Our minds and bodies are the same thing,” Mitchell explains. “So sometimes physical symptoms can show up first.”

That’s part of what makes men’s mental health struggles easy to overlook. Instead of saying, “I feel anxious” or “I think I’m depressed,” many men express distress through actions—working late every night, snapping at their spouse or zoning out in front of the TV for hours. In some cases, avoidance turns into unhealthy coping mechanisms like substance abuse.

“A common response for men would be to get into fights, have relationship problems or abuse alcohol or drugs,” Mitchell says. “By the time they recognize the pain they’ve been in, those behaviors are often hard to kick.”

“When our physical bodies move in the direction of health, our minds follow.”

Exercise, diet and stress management aren’t just good for the body, they’re essential for mental well-being as well. Research consistently shows that regular movement helps regulate mood, improve sleep and reduce anxiety. Eating well fuels brain function. And finding ways to manage stress—whether through meditation, time in nature, or simply cutting back on doom-scrolling—can create space to actually process emotions instead of numbing them.

Of course, building healthy habits doesn’t erase stress or eliminate depression, but it lays the groundwork for resilience. This means moving away from shutting down emotions or pretending everything’s fine and moving toward tools to navigate the hard moments of life.

One of the biggest myths about men’s mental health, Mitchell notes, is that seeking help is a sign of failure. The truth is the opposite.

“The weak thing to do is keep ourselves stuck in a pattern that doesn’t work for us,” he asserts. “It doesn’t take any effort to stay in a groove of negative relationships, abusing substances and so forth. The strongest thing we can do is try to disrupt it.”

And disruption doesn’t always mean therapy. While professional support is valuable, change can also come from lifestyle shifts, such as prioritizing fitness, joining a support group or even picking up a new or old hobby. Mitchell emphasizes that taking small, intentional steps can help men regain a sense of control.

“We can’t immediately fix everything, but we can go for a walk. We can drive to the store to buy nutritious food,” he says.

For those who want to support a man in their life but don’t know how, the best approach might not be to try to "fix" the problem.

“Men like to feel in control,” Mitchell explains. “Supporting someone in distress might simply look like being present. Making a phone call, inviting them to coffee, being curious about their life—just allowing a conversation to emerge.”

Sometimes, simply being heard is more powerful than advice.

Mitchell encourages men to lean into social connection, even in small ways.

“We need people,” he says. “It doesn’t have to look the same for everybody. For some, it may not mean surrounding yourself with a lot of people, but it could be just one friend with whom you haven’t had a deep conversation in a long time. Working on that one relationship can be huge.”

Community plays a key role. Faith groups, sports leagues, even something as simple as a weekly game night can provide a sense of belonging.

“Even if we’re not ready to fully open up,” Mitchell shares, “the more we’re present in these spaces, the more likely we might be to be vulnerable and let people in.”

Dr. Sherberg, DMD founded Bayway Dental with the goal of being a “One-Stop-Shop” concierge dentist. He dedicated his career to mastering most procedures across all dental specialties. People struggling with broken or missing teeth seek him for his expertise in dental implant surgery. Those who want beautiful smiles seek him out for his mastery of smile aesthetics.

Q: What Does it Mean to be a One-Stop-Shop?

Specialization in medicine is a wonderful thing, however, needing five different dentists to solve all your dental issues can be

overwhelming. I can typically perform most, if not all, treatments in my office.

Patients choose the best treatment plan that fits their goals and budget. Of course, no one doctor can master all facets of dentistry, so when necessary, I refer to carefully vetted specialists. I will even attend the offsite procedure to ensure the work fits into the overall plan.

Q: How Have you Helped People who are Scared of the Dentist?

We have helped thousands of people overcome their fears of the dentist with dental sedation. Our

sedation menu includes IV sedation with an anesthesiologist. We find the right sedation level for each patient who needs it.

Q: What is Your Typical Patient Like?

Most have dental problems that would typically require multiple specialists to treat. They have been avoiding the dentist and they want a healthy mouth after years of struggle. Most are retirees with busy lives who need efficient treatment.

Our patients want a trusted advocate. They want to push that “Easy Button”. They want an expert who can say, “Here’s what’s wrong, here are your options, let’s figure out what works best for you and let’s rock this.”

HANGING

HAPPINESS

GARY KING ISN’T SELLING HAPPINESS—HE’S INSTALLING IT. FROM STREET SIGNS TO BUMPER STICKERS, HE’S BUILDING JOY LIKE IT’S A PUBLIC SERVICE AND OUR COMMUNITY SHINES BRIGHTER BECAUSE OF IT.

It’s an exceptionally blustery Monday morning in Gulfport, but the multipurpose studio of Gary King stands strong. Housed in an old airplane hangar, the space is deep, stalwart and open to interpretation—much like the man himself.

Although the weather is offering some forceful resistance, it’s the perfect day to seek happiness—a daunting task if you don’t know where to start. But like any uncertain territory, it helps to ask directions from someone who’s been there.

If you’re not familiar with The Happiness Experiment, you may have crossed paths with King’s work unknowingly. Perhaps you looked up while walking or driving and spotted one of the over 600 metal signs he has installed in our area—nine bold red letters perched on poles, fences and buildings. You may have even noticed the word adorning bumper stickers traveling along local roads.

King greets me in one of his signature Hawaiian shirts, which often feature a sunrise or sunset that spreads across his torso. His glittery demeanor runs from the sparkle in his eyes to the enthusiasm in his voice. The artist, writer, speaker and mental health advocate will be turning 80 in June, but it hasn’t slowed him down in the slightest or diminished his curiosity. He loves figuring out how things work, especially when it comes to reprogramming the subconscious mind.

can see happiness and hold happiness, then you can rewire your brain and reroute your life.

“Here is what people worldwide are not conscious of—their whole life is a happiness experiment, starting at birth,” he asserts. “Almost everything they do is in some way related to finding happiness, throughout their life. In our current time period, almost everything is designed to make people fearful, paranoid, depressed, stressed out, in conflict, violent, vengeful and on and on…the signs are based on science. They create auto suggestion, they are subliminal, they emit a frequency that effects the human core frequency.”

FIND SOMETHING YOU LOVE ENOUGH TO DO FOR FREE, THEN BUILD YOUR LIFE AROUND THAT.”

King’s Gulfport office is lined with newspaper clippings and photos of speedboats, handshakes with presidents and world travels. But when I ask who the happiest person he’s ever met is, he chuckles, “You mean, other than myself?” he says. “That’s an interesting question—I’ve met a lot of people.”

He points to a sepia photo of a massive sandcastle. “Gary Kirk,” he offers. “He built that on Treasure Island—held the world record for largest sand sculpture.”

The two met over 30 years ago by way of coincidence, magic or destiny. Kirk showed up to the build with no experience or tools. Just a gut feeling. He was handed a toolkit and with that he built something beautiful.

“I took everything apart as a kid,” he recalls. “…engines, electrical, even my mom’s car. I made a career out of that.”

He calls himself a gearhead, but these days, it’s the human condition he disassembles and reimagines. His philosophy is simple: “Find something you love enough to do for free, then build your life around that.”

That’s exactly what he did. King has coached hundreds of people, spoken around the world and written two books on happiness. But his happiness journey was initially born out of heartbreak.

When his son took his own life in 2012, he created the project as a way to save other lives. His belief is clear: if you

That’s the message behind King’s movement: happiness isn’t just a sign—it’s a toolkit, a mantra, a magnetic mindset. When he climbs a nine-foot ladder to install one of his six-foot-wide signs above a doorway or alongside a road, his goal is to leave you with something that reminds you that happiness isn’t a destination. He can’t hand you the key to your happiness, but he’s determined to give you a reminder that it may be right in front of you.

Find King on Facebook to learn about a forthcoming documentary about him and for more information about the project, including how to purchase a sign or other merchandise.

CHANGE

ADAM PETERS FIRST MADE THE NEWS FOR SOMETHING SIMPLE BUT POWERFUL— BRINGING NEIGHBORS TOGETHER IN ST. PETE AND SPREADING A SENSE OF GOODWILL. NOW, HE’S TAKING THAT MISSION FURTHER, HELPING OTHERS BUILD MORE FULFILLING LIVES.

Aself-proclaimed happiness ambassador, Adam Peters may be familiar to you from a local news segment, or perhaps you’ve crossed paths with him in the community.

He has the engaging and expressive demeanor of a motivational speaker, shaped equally by his genuinely empathetic nature and his “show don’t tell” communications training, which emphasizes energetic gestures, demonstrative facial expressions and reassuring body language. But beyond the training, there’s a true warmth, visible in his kind eyes and a comforting smile. That’s where his real superpower lies—in his authentic ability to connect. This superpower was not activated by a radioactive spider or a rebounded magical spell, but from something he worked to develop: a conscious effort to “build a preference” for positivity in pursuit of happiness. It’s a mindset he now hopes to teach others.

However, like any hero’s tale, his journey is tinged with tragedy. Earlier this year, at the peak of some potent professional success, he suffered a devastating personal loss.

In the wake of that loss, and while his story is still unfolding, he’s made the powerful choice to lean into his mission with a renewed mix of optimism and emotional vulnerability.

HOW IT STARTED

Peters says his first foray into the happiness business began during “COVID-jail” in the form of the Community Happiness Project (CHP), an inviting outdoor community gathering place on his front lawn in the Oakwood Gardens neighborhood. He decorated the yard with colorful seating, whimsical signage, a curiosities cabinet populated with fun trinkets and beautiful

hand-painted “happiness rocks,” mostly painted by his sister, Shay, for neighbors to take.

“This became my way of coping with the chaos and uncertainty that was unfolding in front of all of us. I spent a good deal of my COVID hiatus learning about neuroscience, specifically how can we make our minds work for us instead of against us,” he recalls. “The X factor I was trying to solve was this insidious negativity that seemed to have an iron grip on all of us, even before COVID. The reason is because we're programmed to look for danger, avoid danger, confront danger. That's how humans have survived for so long. The problem is that we've evolved. We've eliminated most of the perils that have plagued us throughout human history. Our subconscious minds just have not caught up with this yet. It's up to us to consciously bring our attention to the positivity that exists all around us.”

This was when he realized he had the ability to develop his own superpower.

“Studies have shown that when you put more emphasis on positivity, your ability to withstand hardships is greatly increased,” he asserts. “What's even better is when you focus on positivity, your brain develops a preference for it. You start looking for it rather than looking for the negative.”

He was full of optimism and excitement over this realization and quickly found a way to put it into action.

“That’s why the Community Happiness Project exists,” he explains. “I had an idea to erect a signpost with arrows pointing all around the world. At the top of this signpost, there would be the word ‘happiness’ with an arrow pointing down. The symbolic

meaning would be that while you can go to many places searching for it, your happiness is right here.”

The project garnered Peters local media coverage and praise from his neighbors.

“I wanted to spark a sense of unity and togetherness that can endure the challenging times in which we live,” he offers. “The world is big, scary and a little out of control right now. Flip on the national news and it will be easy to feel like the world is on fire and the end is near. However, take a walk around your local neighborhood, stroll downtown, soak up nature at a local park and you will see and experience an entirely different reality.”

His impact can be witnessed through the handwritten love notes left to express gratitude to Peters. An especially potent one reads, “Places like this are a reminder that…there is kindness and wonderful people in this world.”

He also released a book called, The Blueprint to Happy, based on his learnings and which details the evolution of the CHP.

MOVING FORWARD

Tragedy knocks on all doors, even of those who call themselves Happiness Ambassadors.

“I was not prepared for that phone call,” Peters remembers. “‘She finally did it, Adam,’ came the devastated and distraught voice of my father. I didn’t have to ask who, or what. I knew. My sister. Suicide. She struggled daily to feel worthy of love, life and the pursuit of happiness.”

Peters says Shay was committed to a mental health facility under the Baker Act for the first time when she was 12 years old and that, in the intervening 28 years, she suffered with mental illness. She was 40 at the time of her death in January. He recalls he was overcome with shock, shame, regret, anger, uncertainty and grief. He found it hard to reconcile his own progress and Shay’s descent. “Could I have done more?” he asked himself, but he then determined he should not linger on the past or what could have been.

“I benefited from practicing ‘my positive’ before the hardest day of my life came to knock on my door,” he reveals. “Resilience is not built in a crisis. It is built in the quiet periods in between. Crisis is the time to give ourselves grace for doing our absolute best with what we have to work with. I had to focus on what I wanted my future to look like. It felt more important than ever to have a future, because my sister did not.”

He explains that his sister and her lifelong struggles with mental health, had been a driving force in his effort to understand how to help people turn their thoughts around. And now she was gone.

“What comes next for me includes sharing my sister’s story to honor her memory and to open the door for people who struggle, like she did,” he adds, “to know someone cares about them and supports their efforts to build a life they feel is worth living. It is, devastatingly, too late to help my sister. It is not, however, too late to help others. And that is what I would like to spend the rest of my life doing.”

TRANQUILITY FOUND

It is said there are three aspects that determine one’s well-being: body, mind and spirit. After dealing with a stressful health issue and sinking into a black hole every time I turned on the TV news, I decided it was time for a getaway where I could focus on healing and escape the daily insanity spewing from the American political administration.

I have visited Costa Rica twice before, hiking the jungle trails, visiting waterfalls and every morning awakening to the sounds of macaws and howler monkeys outside my window. I had heard that it was a popular destination for yoga retreats and, indeed, there are more than 200 to choose from, according to Book Yoga Retreats by Tripaneer.

There seems to be something for everyone, such as couples' retreats, wellness retreats and meditation retreats, many offering add-ins such as surfing, hiking and ziplining excursions.

Researching on the internet, I found a wide variety of retreats, each one focusing on certain types of yoga—hatha, kundalini, vinyasa and ashtanga—as well as holistic healing opportunities. All meals and lodging are included in the price, which can range from $1,500 for shared occupancy to $4,000 a week and run the gamut from mountaintop luxury to jungle casual.

I decided to sign up for a retreat at Vida Asana School of Yoga, just minutes from the Pacific Coast beach town of Playa Hermosa. I consider myself an intermediate level practitioner, dropping in and out of yoga classes over the past two decades. In recent years, however, I have become more committed to my practice. The retreat offered a combination of classes, workshops and daily excursions that fit my budget, my skill level and my desire to “get away from it all.”

Vida Asana offers a year-round schedule of yoga retreats, each one organized and led by different yoga studios or instruc-

tors. Mine was hosted by The Yoga Center Retreat in Minneapolis. I booked a roundtrip flight from Tampa to San Jose International Airport.

And so began my healing journey. My room was simple yet perfect, with a queen bed, air conditioning, a private bath and views of the lush tropical surroundings. Each morning began with an outdoor vinyasa flow followed by a buffet breakfast and another yoga class. All meals were vegetarian or vegan dishes with an abundance of organic fruits and vegetables, accompanied by fresh juices. Afternoons were open, with options to sign up for an excursion, hang out by the pool, read a book in a shaded hammock or take one of the resort bikes out for a ride to the beach.

I signed up for guided hikes at the popular Manuel Antonio National Park, which I found too crowded, and the Rainmaker Conservation Park, a secluded rainforest habitat of beautiful waterfalls, hanging bridges and tropical foliage. We could also sign up for surf lessons, zip-lining, massages and a visit to a sweat lodge, all for an additional fee. Guided mind and spirit conversations were held after dinner. Each evening closed with a relaxing outdoor yin class.

At a farewell circle on the final evening, each participant confessed to finding inner peace, healing and 13 new friends—and to never wanting to leave Costa Rica. As for me, the tranquility of the retreat was a soothing balm for my mind, body and spirit. I returned feeling renewed and refreshed, and in search of my next yoga retreat.

I Got Fired

Unemployed at 37, one local woman faces the daunting prospect of starting adulthood anew, without all the things she once valued most.

That is where this fairytale begins. It is hardly an uncommon experience and in many media industries, getting fired is a rite of passage. However, somewhere in my 11 years in radio, my identity began to meld with my occupation. I enjoyed telling people I was a radio personality. They always seemed genuinely impressed even though most would quickly disclose, “No offense, but I haven’t listened to the radio in years.”

No offense taken. Can you think of anyone under the age of 30 that even listens to the radio? I can’t. So, I would accept the praise all the same!

I had been warned about defining yourself by what you did for work, and I was about to find out why. I was suddenly fighting to score one of the few remaining jobs in the industry. I began with an erratic fervor characteristic of a nervous system dialed to maximum volume. LinkedIn became my best friend as I connected with anyone who would allow me five minutes of their time.

cise: In my case, we are talking zone 2 and zone 5 cardio, weightlifting, mobility training, stretching and active recovery walking.

Sunlight: It’s no secret that fresh air and sunlight elevate your mood. Sleep: This one is pretty self-explanatory.

Now I am no stranger to healthy living and wellness. I had started running for exercise when I was 11 years old and weightlifting the following year. So, whenever I was going through a difficult time, I would really lean into The Things. But something was different this time. It wasn’t working. I was becoming even more depressed and anxious. And then I began to sprinkle shame on the situation.

As the weeks and the months passed, the nervous energy began to fade, and depression and hopelessness set in. There was a good chance that I was done. It might be time to shelve that career and pick up a new one. Over time, I hardly recognized myself. I used to feel confident, competent and resourceful. I used to feel excited and optimistic about the future. Now I felt like a useless loser and thinking about the future made me feel physically ill.

What was I going to do? How long do I keep pushing? Whenever I go through a challenging time, I start implementing what I affectionately refer to as The Things.

If you’ve ever listened to an Andrew Huberman or Peter Attia podcast, you know what I’m talking about. They go something like this, Eat Healthy: The gut is the second brain after all. Exer-

“You don’t have cancer, you have both your legs, your family and friends are healthy and happy, you have a wonderful man in your life, and you still aren’t happy,” I would tell myself. “What an ungrateful loser. You lost a job, so what? This happens to people every day. Get it together!”

I felt whatever the opposite of resilient is and I was plagued by these thoughts all day, every day. I was becoming a shell of my former self.

The Things only brought me minor and temporary relief, but I kept doing them because I didn’t know what else to do. Months passed and I began to ruminate excessively.

I came from a loving middle-class family. I had everything I needed to become a success. I had an idyllic childhood full of accomplishments and meaningful friendships. I went to a prestigious university. I should have knocked this career thing out of the park.

It then occurred to me that I was determined to learn something from this. What if I find a new job soon…and then I get fired or laid off again, will I be thrown right back into this emotional mess? Unacceptable.

I remember thinking, If I can’t change my employment situation, perhaps there’s a way to change my mental situation. It was also at this point that I realized I had absolutely no tools or internal resources to regulate my emotions. All I knew how to do was run, lift and move. Which, to be fair, have their place in the health space. But I was doing that and it wasn’t working.

I had heard some friends and health gurus talk about meditation, but being left alone with my thoughts was about the last thing I was willing to do. I would rather spend 3 hours torturing myself doing squats at the gym than 10 minutes alone with my thoughts. But at this point, I was willing to try anything for peace of mind. Maybe it was time to explore some Eastern wisdom. Monks seem pretty relaxed.

A two minute search on the internet revealed that I was only 10 minutes away from Kadampa Meditation Center (KMC) in Safety Harbor. The lessons I began to learn were profound. It was my attachments that were causing my suffering…my self-cherishing beliefs. My attachment to my career in radio was killing me. I needed to let it go and know that I was going

to be okay no matter what happened. Perhaps I could redefine my value instead. I put value and effort into being a better friend, spouse and daughter.

I also needed to understand that everyone is suffering and meet people with compassion and kindness, because they are probably doing their best. And I started to think about myself in that way. This perspective shift has been wildly helpful for me.

When you’re in a dark time in your life and you hate yourself, self-love can be too lofty a goal. Forgive me for being cynical, but screaming self-affirmations at myself in the mirror every morning didn’t work. I had to shelve self-love and explore self-neutrality…that was far more appealing because it was more attainable. The gap between expectation and reality is a painful one, so by removing the expectation and accepting my reality, I found increased peace of mind.

While I am still figuring out what comes next career-wise, I have learned the difference between self-pity, which leads us to feel resentful and helpless, and self-compassion, which promotes resilience and self-awareness.

BODY OF WORK

ARTIST CRISTI LÓPEZ HAS TAKEN ST. PETE BY STORM, USING HER WORK TO CREATE A DIALOGUE AROUND THE COMPLEX TOPICS OF IDENTITY AND MENTAL HEALTH.

In today’s digital age, when something piques our curiosity, we often tumble down a proverbial rabbit hole, scouring the web and consuming every available source of public content on the topic—until we’ve either exhausted the material or ourselves. Along the way, we assemble a mental mosaic— fragments from countless sources forming a composite image of something or someone. What follows is a pastiche of Cristi López’s reflections and insights, drawn from her telling of her own compelling story.

If you haven’t heard of her yet, López is an artist gaining attention for her sensuous, psychologically layered works that explore the complexities of identity through bold color palettes and intriguing compositions.

Her first local mural, titled Moo, is located at 2655 Fairfield Ave South, and was created as part of the 10th annual SHINE Mural Festival in November of last year. Full of subtle symbolism, the composition celebrates femininity and our connection to the natural world, whimsically incorporating cows—her favorite animal.

“Creating something that will be part of people’s everyday lives—the unique way that murals are—is very special,” López explains. “One of SHINE’s stated intentions is to make St. Pete into an open-air gallery, and that’s exactly what they’ve done. St. Pete’s walls have made the city a gallery that you live in. It’s a dream!”

of whom did not survive their battles. It took me 25 years to be diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) after a lifetime of struggle,” she reveals. “As an artist, I feel compelled to create sapphic dreamscapes. I can’t necessarily explain why, but I create them anyway…because the images come naturally to me. I am also compelled to love women, but my anxious mind generates reasons why I shouldn’t. Naturally, the stakes do feel quite high. My culture and religion of origin also isn’t keen on homosexuality. But trying to get to the bottom of why my OCD attacks my sexuality is a trap; especially when my OCD attacks everything from my favorite color to my choice of socks.”

Described as incorporating allegorical, surreal and often abstracted elements, her work reveals itself as both a search for a visual language to articulate the reality of her condition and an act of exorcising her inner demons. She uses it as a platform to amplify the lived experiences of those with mental illness— encapsulated in one of her favorite mantras, To be portrayed is to be seen.

A first-generation American of Dominican, Spanish and Cuban descent, she grew up in Florida and earned a BFA in Illustration from Ringling College of Art and Design. She staged her first solo show in Chicago before returning to Florida and settling in St. Pete. Her larger body of work explores the tension between her traditional heritage and modern identity, including themes of sexuality, femininity and mental health.

“Latin American culture is collectively lacking in its acknowledgement of mental illness. This has had ramifications in my own life and the lives of multiple family members, some

“My work illustrates the often-invisible journey of navigating mental illness. I aim to remind others that their unique, complex journeys deserve to be acknowledged without judgment,” she offers. “The neurodivergent mind is not to be relegated to the shadows; it is to be explored in full color.”

She seeks to foster a deeper understanding of the emotions, complexity, and creativity inherent in people with OCD—not to focus solely on their challenges, but to portray them as whole, multifaceted individuals beyond their condition.

“When I was younger, I over-identified with my negative thoughts, rationalizing their presence as an indication of dark truths about me. I looked at whatever my current experience was through the lens of this negative self-talk. It poisoned most everything I did, felt and said. This included my accomplishments, which were confusingly tinged with the same painful self-doubt as my perceived failures.

When I was 20, my therapist encouraged me to try reframing my sensitivity by reading Elaine Aron’s The Highly Sensitive Person. This was the first time I saw sensitivity painted as a potentially positive, even powerful, trait. I can’t count the number of times in my life that my sensitivity has been cited as a problem, an inconvenience and something to be remedied,” she continues. “The traits I possess that were reinforced and encouraged by the school system included perfectionism, rigidity, structure…things that made me a model student. Both structure and creativity are integral to a balanced life, but— aided by the all-or-nothing tendencies of OCD and cultural messaging—I overdeveloped the structured parts of myself to the point where I was incapacitated.”

She eventually learned to channel the negative feedback loops and hypersensitivity through a program she entered for treatment of her OCD and complex anxiety disorders. Exposure and response prevention therapy (ERP) was a substantial part of her treatment. According to the International OCD Foundation, the “exposure” in ERP refers to intentionally exposing yourself to the thoughts, images, objects and situations that generate anxiety and obsessive thinking. The

“response prevention” in ERP refers to consciously not engaging in compulsions/rituals to mitigate the anxiety.

“Creating art is an excellent exercise in learning how to tolerate the discomfort of uncertainty. The prospect of sitting with our own critical thoughts, that often arise—even if you don’t have OCD—can be enough to keep us from doing it at all. We not only expect our creation to look like something recognizable, we also expect it to be good,” López asserts. “When I was in the depths of my disorder, I remember that the idea of creating art felt impossible. At that point, I felt like I succeeded if I took a shower, so how the hell was I going to create a masterpiece?”

She shares that one of the more impactful mantras she has incorporated into her routine is simply, “good enough.”

“As a recovering perfectionist, these words are deeply uncomfortable to articulate and practice,” she confesses. “But as anyone managing OCD knows, discomfort is where growth occurs. So, I sit with the thought, feel the anxiety and trust that it will run its course. It just takes practice.”

López hosts the “Queer Contours” figure drawing series in collaboration with Queer Expression St. Pete and teaches yoga at SukhaLife Yoga Studio. Visit cristilopezart.com to learn more.

FAIR WINDS

Lauren Hubbard has set sail on a transformative journey to chart new territory beyond geographical boundaries.

Lauren Hubbard has a creative spirit and abundant energy that makes her a standout in any room. Those qualities have opened doors for her and guided her path as an emerging community advocate, leading an innovative local nonprofit focused on helping young people unlock their potential and develop both global and community-based perspectives.

Last year, when her personal life brought her to a crossroads, Hubbard chose to reframe her story and redirect her energy. As a newly single mother, she stepped into a new chapter and doubled down on her mission to impact chil-

dren’s lives in St. Pete as the founder and CEO of All The World’s Kids Inc. (ATWK).

In April, ATWK hosted a fundraiser that featured a fashion show in which students modeled custom pieces adorned with positive mantras. The event raised funds to support the organization’s first global impact expedition in June, which will take six students from the Academy Prep Center of St. Petersburg abroad on a humanitarian mission. Academy Prep is a nationally accredited nonprofit middle school that inspires and empowers students qualifying for need-based scholarships to become future community leaders.

“It’s rare to witness this level of passion and devotion," offers documentary filmmaker Sergio Guerrero, who is chronicling the expedition. "What makes it especially rare is that it is rooted in Lauren's deep, genuine desire to make the world a better place.”

We chatted with Hubbard, who uses the hashtag #thinkdreamdarebelieve to represent her foundation, about her journey.

How are you living your best life?

Wow, talk about your best life. Here I am a single mom who went through a separation leading her into the complete unknown. At the time, I thought it was a punishment. I felt like I wasn't good enough for the life I was living, not good enough for the person I was with—who decided that they didn't want this life anymore. I left the neighborhood I was so actively involved in, to live on a boat. I changed my job…everything. Who does that? But I've fallen into living my best life. Now, I have the whole world at my hands, sitting here looking out at the ocean. I’m raising my child in nature and I'm working with kids every day.

What sparked your interest in sailing?

I started taking sailing lessons because I wanted to build confidence and I wanted something that couldn't be taken away from me. I wanted experiences and I wanted to share those

with my daughter, Monte. Sailing became that thing. After a year of training at the St. Petersburg Sailing Center, I had so much confidence that I made a whole lifestyle out of it.

How did ATWK begin?

A couple of years back, before I had a child of my own, I was living abroad in Southeast Asia and working for various service organizations. In the Philippines, I was working with Voice of the Free, an organization that rescues young girls that have been sold for sex trafficking and modern-day slavery. I was brought on as part of an emotional mastery and meditation coach. Every morning, I would lead meditation with these girls and I remember sitting there feeling that all the world’s kids are vulnerable and ours to protect. And it wasn't just those girls in the room. It was every child. And so that’s how it started…with the name.

ATWK exists to help youth unlock their full potential through art, mentorship and experiences. That led us to create our art therapy program, our life coaching and pathway planning program and our global impact expeditions. We primarily serve at-risk, underserved communities here in St. Petersburg. Our program partnerships have been primarily with two local schools on the South side, Infinite Potential Learning Academy (IPLA), which is a kindergarten through fourth grade school and Academy Prep, which is our fifth to eighth grade school.

With IPLA, we brought in our art therapy program for seven weeks and we worked to develop a curriculum that was personalized to the needs of the school and the students. We also partnered with the Saint Petersburg Free Clinic Food Bank to provide meals for students, because we know that during summers the free food program gets put on hold.

We also partnered with 15th St Farm and brought about 40 students from Academy Prep there to learn about sustainability and growing things in the soil, because we want to bring that back here. Once you have those tools and that knowledge, you can go and teach others how to do the same thing.

Tell us about your global impact expedition.

We have a really good relationship in place with the head of Academy Prep, who was on board with giving us the opportunity to lead their students on our pilot expedition to Cambodia in June. We already had host-country directors and volunteers ready to receive us. We just needed the permission, trust and support from the head of the school to say, ‘We love what you're doing. Go ahead.’

The idea is that if we take young people from underserved

areas in our own community, provide them with a passport, take them abroad and give them an opportunity to service out in the world, they'll come back into their own neighborhood with the realization that they can have a much bigger impact than they thought they could. It’s not just that they will see what they can accomplish, but also hopefully realize that they have so much more than they thought they did.

The students will be brought to a village where 95% of the residents do not have access to clean water. The students will not only get to work on the project but help educate the villagers on using those resources. It will also teach them about partnerships and community engagement.

What is Monte’s part in your ATWK journey?

She has saved my life in so many ways. I wouldn’t be here if not for her. So, having her with me, creating something that will live way beyond our lifetime is a legacy that I want to be able to share with her. I believe that one day she'll be out there doing so much more, because she's witnessed it firsthand.

MEET A LOCAL WOMAN WHOSE INSPIRING COMMITMENT TO SERVICE HAS MADE HER A STANDOUT—AND AN ONGOING FORCE FOR GOOD.

Stephanie Morge is a champion for our community. She has garnered a great deal of respect for her visible contributions to leadership and philanthropy, working with a variety of local organizations. She regularly donates her time and talents to make a difference for such organizations as CASA Pinellas (Community Action Stops Abuse), Reach St. Pete, SPCA Tampa Bay (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), Habitat for Humanity and St. Pete Pride. She sits on several boards and committees, including Women in Leadership & Philanthropy (WLP) and the Black Alumni Society at the University of South Florida (USF), her alma mater.

She has continued to have a powerful impact at USF by serving on committees, mentoring students and sharing her insights as a speaker.

Opposite page: Morge reading to kindergartners at Melrose Elementary School with the Leadership St. Pete Alumni Association. From left: Morge at a Power Design job site and the Tampa Bay Heart Walk.

“Stephanie is deeply passionate about supporting USF students, which shines through in everything she does,” explains Lauren Gstalder, executive director of WLP. “Her leadership, warmth and dedication are inspiring and make her an invaluable part of our community.”

Community lies at the heart of Morge’s mission, and her hands-on efforts have helped propel the growth of the organizations she supports.

“Stephanie’s leadership and commitment as vice-chair of CASA’s board of directors have been critical in helping our organization reach new heights. In addition to rolling up her sleeves and always being one to volunteer for a myriad of activities, Stephanie is a passionate advocate who remains calm, cool and collected in her leadership. This is a powerful combination that inspires everyone involved in advancing our mission, from the board of directors to those engaged in grassroots activities,” explains CEO Lariana Forsythe. “Stephanie's passion for philanthropy shines in her personal and professional life. She has strong community ties, always supports local St. Pete businesses and organizations and brings her network’s support together to make CASA shine.”

Morge was raised in South Florida and relocated to Tampa in 2002, where she graduated from USF with a degree in finance. A short time later, she was hired by Power Design, Inc. and moved across the bay—becoming, in her words, a “St. Peteian.”

“It is such a unique blend of past and present, with art, innovation and community creating a thriving blend of culture,” she

says of her adopted city. “The people here truly care about St. Pete, their fellow residents and where the city goes next.”

Her passion for the community was intensified when she was accepted into Leadership St. Pete, a dynamic six-month program designed to promote and enhance civic engagement and leadership, operated by the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce. “It transformed my understanding of the city and further fueled my desire to make a difference,” she asserts.

At Power Design, where she leads the company’s expansive Learning & Development department, she and her team provide employee development opportunities using targeted training, learning technology and performance evaluation. She also oversees Power Design’s leadership and career initiatives including their federally registered apprenticeship program and serves on the company’s DEI committee.

“I operate under a servant leader mentality, so what I get out of volunteering is knowing I’m helping others,” she offers. “Seeing the difference that boards, committees and staff can make when everyone comes together for a mission energizes me and makes everything worth it.”

This transformational leadership philosophy prioritizes the growth and well-being of others to create a positive impact. The benefit for employees and the larger community is leadership that is more interested in serving the common good than advancing their own ambitions. It requires humility, modesty, collaboration and a willingness to share credit—qualities that

stand in stark contrast to today’s cultural focus on self-promotion and personal recognition.

“Stephanie has been an active member of our board of directors for five years and a strong supporter even before she joined our leadership team. I remember the first time we spoke, at least 10 years ago, when one of the Power Design teams found a litter of kittens on a job site. They were anxious to help the kittens and brought them directly to our shelter. That started a long and wonderful partnership that Stephanie has helped cultivate. She knows Power Design has many pet lovers on their staff and she makes sure they are involved in our annual Pet Walk,” shares SPCA Tampa Bay President and CEO Martha Boden. “She is generous with her time and wisdom, helping us shape and support a truly phenomenal group of volunteer leaders. I feel very fortunate to have her counsel as we create a community where every animal matters.”

interfere too much with her pickleball schedule! She has served on Reach St. Pete’s Literacy Program and leads the LGBTQ employee resource group where she works.

How do you balance your volunteer commitments with your work life?

MY MOM IS MY NUMBER ONE INSPIRATION.

Power Design is a huge supporter of outreach to the community. The company is very family-focused and the leaders want their employees to be a part of the community and support it. To do this, they have instituted the Power Design V5 Program. V5 represents the company’s top values of teamwork, accountability, integrity, innovation and growth. We raise money by recycling metal and wire scraps from our job sites, with the proceeds going into a charitable fund. Throughout the year, employees can submit requests for donations to support local organizations.

We chatted with the charismatic community advocate to learn more about her journey.

Do you recall what first got you interested in community service?

My mom is my number one inspiration—a widowed mother of three before she turned 40, she worked tirelessly to provide a wonderful life for me and my siblings. A role model beyond the home, she became an accomplished microbiologist and always looked out for others along the way. While I was in high school, I vividly remember a young woman my mom worked with who had two young children and very little support. My mom would help with household needs and babysitting, always bringing me along so I could understand the value of giving back.

What draws you to volunteer for the organizations you work with?

Every organization I work with is directly related to a passion or personal experience. For example, in high school I was in an abusive relationship and when I learned about CASA, I immediately wanted to be involved. Being part of an organization means its mission and values have to be aligned with mine. I don’t get involved just to get involved, or to have my name on something—I want to make a difference.

Is your community work something you and your wife can do together?

On occasion, she joins me in volunteering, as long as it doesn’t

What has been some of your best experiences volunteering?

One of the best experiences was mentoring some young female college students through WLP. Being able to pour into them and help them navigate life and work towards their goals was so rewarding. I would also say getting to work alongside future homeowners as part of a Habitat build was really inspiring.

What makes you excited to get up every morning?

Seeing what each day holds, both professionally and personally. As someone who used to be change-averse, I now embrace the ‘rollercoaster’ that I experience most weeks. By doing so, I’ve been able to develop my abilities and resiliency. Having lost loved ones throughout my life, I view everything with relativity. Doing this helps ground me during trying times and allows me to reframe my thinking.

What is your typical day like?

Usually, a full day of meetings at work, followed by a workout session at St. Pete Strength Club and then either a board or committee meeting. Mixed in with all of that is usually some calls with family and snuggles with our fur babies when I get home. On a good day, I have time to make dinner or try a new recipe, but often that ends up being the exception given my schedule. It’s important to balance priorities, so I schedule self-care to avoid burning out. It is all worth it, though, as I get to see the difference made to those who are supported by these organizations.

NOW W ZEN N &

ACROSS ST. PETERSBURG AND BEYOND, PEOPLE ARE LEANING INTO WELLNESS INTERIOR DESIGN, WHICH IS A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO CREATING SPACES THAT SUPPORT PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL AND MENTAL WELL-BEING.

In today’s fast-paced world, the pull toward tranquility and escape has never been stronger. With so much to juggle—work, family and everyday stress—homeowners are craving environments that restore rather than exhaust them.

"Most of my clients are so busy they want their homes to feel like a spa,” says interior designer Isabel Lomba of Graham & Co. Interiors. “I don’t know about you, but I love how rejuvenated I feel after visiting a great spa. I transform my clients’ homes into their own special retreats by creating spaces that enhance their overall well-being and quality of life. I believe your home should be your sanctuary, so I’m intentionally bringing wellness-focused design to my clients by creating beautiful, sophisticated and comforting spaces that bring joy, serenity and balance into their lives.”

Lomba’s viewpoint is at the heart of a growing movement in home design—one that looks beyond beauty to create spaces that support how we feel, heal and live.

Interior designers use natural light, organic textures, calming color palettes and clutter-free configurations to tap into wellness interiors. But this is more than just an aesthetic trend; this is a movement rooted in science.

A 2022 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that thoughtfully designed living spaces can help prevent and manage chronic diseases. The researchers advocate for “restorative living spaces” that support self-care, emotional resilience and reduced stress—goals that designers are achieving through natural materials, eco-friendly choices and personalized functionality.

Technology is also playing a growing role in wellness design, especially in Florida, where managing light and heat is key. Designers are now using tools that help the home adapt to its environment, supporting comfort, rest and safety.

“Smart home technology can enhance wellness by syncing with the body’s natural rhythms,” says Melanie Niemerg of Integral Home Technology. “Lighting that mimics the sun’s natural arc, such as circadian lighting, can boost mood, regulate sleep and improve focus. Homeowners can even pair lighting with automated shades on timers so their space adapts throughout the day. We often work with clients who live on the water and want to enjoy the view while also protecting their furnishings. We’ll set the shades to lower at just the right time to reduce sun bleaching, creating a home that’s both functional and restorative.”

As smart solutions become more intuitive and discreet, they are fusing into wellness-focused interior choices, amplifying the emotional and physical benefits of good design.

At its core, designing for well-being is about creating interiors that align with your body’s natural rhythms and support emotional balance. Here are a few foundational elements:

• Natural light: Large windows and skylights help regulate circadian rhythms, boost vitamin D and support mental clarity.

• Non-toxic materials: From low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints to untreated wood and organic textiles, using safer materials improves indoor air quality.

• Clutter-free layouts: Smart storage and minimalist styling create a sense of ease and order.

• Defined zones: Carving out spaces for movement, rest or creativity can bring structure and harmony to everyday routines.

As the concept of “home as sanctuary” continues to evolve, more homeowners are designating specific rooms or corners of their homes for self-care. Popular ideas include creating yoga, Zen and meditation rooms with soft lighting and natural fibers to promote relaxation and mindfulness. Spa bathrooms have also become a favorite, featuring soaking tubs, diffused lighting and earth tones to create a soothing, tranquil atmosphere. Additionally, reading nooks are being incorporated into homes, offering a cozy retreat with layered textures, warm lighting and personal touches for a comfortable space to unwind and enjoy a good book.

What’s good for the earth is good for your health, too. Sustainable design choices, such as bamboo flooring, reclaimed wood, energy-efficient fixtures and water-saving systems, not only reduce your environmental footprint but also create cleaner and more harmonious living spaces.

Wellness design also considers what goes into a home, from building materials to cleaning products and even pest control. Choosing non-toxic, eco-friendly solutions over conventional pesticides is one more way to reduce indoor chemical exposure and promote a truly healthy living environment.

Today’s wellness interior design movement marks a return to what we’re all craving: calm, comfort and connection. By weaving together natural elements, sustainable practices and thoughtful functionality, today’s designers are creating homes that don’t just look good—they feel good.

INSIDER

Exploring St. Pete’s Vibrant Culture

CURIOUS ABOUT THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF WINE? LOOKING FOR LOCAL SPOTS AND STANDOUT DISHES THAT CONNOISSEURS CRAVE? WE TAPPED OUR INSIDERS TO SHARE THEIR ADVICE—FROM TOP PICKS BY ONE OF THE AREA’S MOST RESPECTED CULINARY EXPERTS TO ADVICE ON CHOOSING THE BEST WINES TO SUIT YOUR LIFESTYLE.

SAVORING THE SCENE

MEET HELEN FREUND, THE POPULAR TAMPA BAY TIMES' FOOD AND DINING CRITIC, WHO'S SPENT YEARS CULTIVATING A CONNOISSEUR'S PALATE.

With a job that many of us dream of having—and judging from her Instagram feed, a good work-life balance sprinkled with plenty of fun adventures—Helen Freund is the perfect guide to the very best our community has to offer. After all, few things boost your sense of well-being quite like a satisfying culinary experience.

What might surprise people about being a food critic?

My position is really more of a hybrid role, and only about half of my job is spent critiquing restaurants. The other half of the time I’m working on longer enterprise, trend and investigative stories, but of course, the dining out is the fun part. And even when I’m working on reviews, there’s more than just eating out and critiquing that goes into the work. For every restaurant review, I’m usually scheduling meals and photoshoots months in advance, and then spend a decent time reporting, researching and doing interviews before publishing the final piece.

What's your favorite local haunt and why?

I live near Gulfport so Pia’s Trattoria is always my go-to. I’ve been here so many times over the years and it is consistently

great food and really lovely hospitality. If I’m just looking for a casual drink and some peel-and-eat shrimp, the “treehouse” bar at Billy’s Stone Crab in Tierra Verde can’t be beat.

A dish you frequently crave?

I think about the Korean fried chicken sandwich and tuna tostadas at Wild Child often.

Best/freshest seafood in the area?

I love The Tides Seafood Market & Provisions in Safety Harbor. They’ve got a great raw oyster selection and the Grouper Romesco is also fantastic.

Best alfresco dining?

Juno & The Peacock has a lovely setup right on Beach Drive in St. Pete. When the weather is nice, I also love to spend an afternoon at Olde Bay Cafe in Dunedin.

Best food with a view?

If you can time it right around sunset, the outside deck at Sea Worthy in Tierra Verde is every bit worth the drive.

Most innovative menu?

The creativity and seasonal menu progression at Il Ritorno is unparalleled.

Best cool hangout?

I love spending an evening at In Between Days in St. Petersburg for the moody lighting, good tunes and all-around great vibes. Slim Charmer, in the Grand Central District, is coming in hot too—with super swanky decor and a killer martini program.

Best fine dining?

Again, Il Ritorno is hard to beat. Their menu changes frequently, but if there's octopus on the menu, that's always a great bet.

Best comfort food?

I adore the burger at Brick & Mortar. And a deep-dish pie from Cappy’s always hits the spot.

Fave place for pastries?

The pastries at Le Clementine Bakeshop are incredible.

Best coffee or tea house?

I’m a big fan of Uptown Eats in St. Pete—their breakfast sandwich with collard greens is amazing.

What's your go-to for drinks?

For wine, I’ll hit up CellarMasters or Pistil House. If I’m in the

mood for a cocktail, Slim Charmer, Intermezzo and Sonder Social Club are all great bets.

Your picks when you want something healthy

It’s a chain, but we’re a big Sweetgreen household. I also love the bun bowls and summer rolls at Alesia in St. Pete—super fresh and healthy.

What's a good spot for "Old Florida" food?

Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish.

Are you a food truck fan? If so, any that top the list?

I’m still mourning the loss of taco truck Te Invito—I think about their quesabirria and carnitas tacos often. Maybe they’ll reappear again sometime again in the future. A girl can dream!

Your newest food obsession?

50/50 martinis and whelks, which I recently had in Paris but have yet to find on a menu here. Also, a good mortadella sandwich—the one at Mazzaro's is incredible.

Favorite food/restaurant movies or books?

I love Julie & Julia. And Blood, Bones & Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton is fantastic.

VINO VERITAS

Although health claims have recently been debated, the pleasurable attributes of wine and the producer's eco-conscious practices may be more relevant in making decisions about your well-being.

Historically, wine has always been the fortunate frontrunner in the conversation between alcohol and health. Whether it is due to its long history, culture and main place on many dinner tables, there has always been a glimmer of hope that a glass of wine a day may be okay.

Older studies have shown that low to moderate consumption could help decrease cardiovascular risks. Red wine has been credited with having polyphenols, antioxidants and resveratrol. However, wine is no longer seen as the health product it once was.

Recent conflicting and wavering studies and reviews from scientific sources and news outlets leave us questioning our consumption. Modern demands even call for nutritional labels

on bottles. The more that wellness becomes a priority, alcohol intake naturally decreases.

An interesting discussion may be breaking down how the low amount of alcohol, sugars, calories and carbs, along with the higher antioxidant properties in wine. The Mediterranean diet or French Paradox—two distinct biogeographic concepts for one consolidated scientific theory on the role of nutrition in coronary heart disease— also may make wine seem the healthier choice of alcohol, however, these may not change your personal wellness choices.

THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE

The best thing to focus on may not be what is inside the bottle, but what it takes to make that bottle the right choice for us.

The relationship between wellness and wine should not only focus on occasional consumption but imbibing with intention.

Wine has the benefit of connecting us to a place, time and even the people who made it happen. Studying the history of the culture and cuisine of the region can allow for more appreciation. Seeking out a pairing for our new favorite healthy recipe can be exciting. Daydreaming of the landscape around where the wine came from can be meditative and therapeutic. Breaking down the environmental factors that shape the character and flavor of grapes of the region (otherwise known as terrior) and discovering the aroma and taste of it inside our glass can be a fascinating endeavor that stimulates our minds.

NATURAL SELECTION

and energy efficiency as well as equal, secure employment. Sonoma County, New Zealand and South Africa are nearly completely sustainably certified.

SPIRITED PURSUITS

To take it a step further, regenerative viticulture is a distinctly scientific method that aims to increase the biodiversity around the vineyard site and ultimately improve the soil health and reduce carbon emissions. By planting cover crops around the vines and utilizing livestock to help tend to the area, this natural farming relationship will also help improve overall yields in the future.

A great starting point for exploring ethics in wine is to seek transparency from the producers. Some conscientious choices may start with what type of barrels, corks and packaging they use or how many cases they produce a year. Smaller production means less grapes, but usually at a higher quality from more select vineyard sites. Shopping local can also help support authentic wineries and not big box brands. Many restaurant and boutique shop staffers can offer a wealth of information for each bottle displayed on their shelves.

In the European Union, winemakers are required to list ingredients on their bottles and provide a QR code with a link to a fact sheet. Many bottles may be labeled as certified organic, meaning the grapes are organic, all additives are organic and no synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers are used. Australia, New Zealand, Chile and Argentina have similar certifying bodies and will all be labeled appropriately.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has its own similar certification process and requires winemakers to forgo adding sulfites. Regulations in the U.S. are stricter, making it increasingly harder to become certified organic. Wines are still allowed, however, to be labeled “made with organic grapes.”

Many consumers believe drinking wines that are made with sustainability in mind is a part of their moral imperative for the future of the environment and seek wines that are in line with this. This means vineyards and wineries practice water

Biodynamics is a subset of regenerative viticulture started by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner in the 1920s, who based farming around the lunar calendar. The concept takes the entire ecosystem into account which, in turn, improves soil and vineyard health with an emphasis on composting as soil should be considered self-sustaining as well. The ideology is that the spirit of the cosmos, along with the growth of the grapes at the hands of the wine grower, all coincide to make a consistent, terroir-driven, low-intervention wine. Wines internationally certified under this practice will be labeled with a Biodyvin or Demeter logo.

What dominates the practice of low or no intervention in the winery is the natural wine movement, aiming to retain the authentic flavors of the grapes. This includes no added yeasts or no barrel influence in the winery. There is no legal definition or certification here, but all natural wines are considered organic as they also use no chemicals or pesticides in the vineyard. The majority are vegan, with no filtration or fining agents at play. This approach allows us some room for adventure, as each bottle is unique. There is an opportunity to learn more about each producer’s choices, their grapes and their outcomes.

Whether curious about the distinctive styles of natural wines or opting for the consistent approach of modern practices, each can offer a truly enjoyable experience. We all continuously strive to make beneficial choices for a lasting and fulfilling life. When we choose to indulge, it helps to understand how what we consume not only affects our bodies, but the earth as well.

THE X FACTOR

With impressive upgrades inside and out, this refreshed take on a popular compact SUV is more dynamic than ever.

In 2023, the BMW X3 was the brand’s best-selling vehicle. The classy, compact, sporty SUV is positioned conveniently between the subcompact X1 and the midsize X5. In my opinion, the fourth-gen X3 is perfectly sized for a start-up family or a young working couple.

For 2025, this popular SUV was reconceived from the inside out. Under the hood of the handsome five passenger X3 sits a 2.0-liter twin-power turbocharged and intercooled 4-cylinder engine pumping out 255 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 295 pounds-feet of torque at 4500 rpm. That is supplemented by a 48-volt battery and electric motor that provides plenty of punch—0 to 60 in six seconds with a top speed up to 130 mph. It is further enhanced by a smooth, slick-shifting eight-speed auto gearbox. Handling and balance prowess is backed by a double-joint spring strut front and fivelink rear suspension. The Servotronic electric power steering is precise and direct.

Specifications

Essentially, all the knobs and dials are history. Even the gear selector is now toggle-only. The black perforated, well-bolstered Veganza seats are spacious and lush. The X3 is equipped with a standard anthracite headliner, a power lift gate, a panoramic roof, dual auto A/C, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and ambient lights, as well as typically non-standard heated front seats.

Tires: P245/50R19

Wheelbase: 112.8 inches

Length: 187.2 inches

Width: 75.6 inches

Height: 65.4 inches

Fuel capacity: 17.2 gallons

Mileage: 27 city, 33 highway

Weight: 4,176 pounds

As far as safety, the X3 is fully loaded with dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbags, dynamic stability and traction control, four-wheel antilock brakes, electronic brake distribution, a rearview camera, front and rear anti-roll bars, parking assistance, active driving assist (forward collision and lane departure warnings and blind spot detection), rear-cross traffic alert, city collision mitigation, daytime running lights and tire pressure monitoring.

A novice buyer will likely be completely in awe of the enormous, curved screen upon entering the cabin, which features a 14.9-inch infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. You can also give voice commands to the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Ultimately, this revamped SUV delivers a graceful, enjoyable and energetic ride with a top-notch cabin. Indeed, the entire package is a superb combination of style and performance. It is undoubtedly German engineering at its finest.

Improving Care

Physician and thought-leader Dr. Uche Blackstock spends an evening with doctors and clinicians in St. Pete.

On a Wednesday evening in April, after their busy workdays ended, dozens of doctors and other clinicians poured into the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg to hear from a best-selling author, Harvard-trained physician and one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in Health.

Dr. Uché Blackstock, author of the New York Times bestseller Legacy: A Black Physician Reckons with Racism in Medicine, spoke to the crowd about how healthcare and racism intersect—and what clinicians can do to improve outcomes.

The Foundation organized the evening believing that, while medical care is far from the only factor that shapes our health, clinicians have tremendous potential to improve patient outcomes and community well-being.

“We wanted to create a space for our local medical community to engage with a renowned industry expert around

opportunities to elevate outcomes where we see the greatest need,” Foundation President and CEO Dr. Kanika Tomalin said. “Creating a community in which good health enables all people to thrive requires thoughtful reflection about where our systems fall short so that we can systemically improve them.”

As a young girl growing up in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, Blackstock dreamed of following in her mother’s footsteps to become a doctor. In the fall of 2001, at the age of 23, she took her place at Harvard Medical School (HMS), where her mother had also trained.

While at HMS, Blackstock suffered a near-death experience that became foundational to her career. Experiencing intense abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, she went to an emergency room seeking care. After a brief examination, she was told she had a stomach bug and was sent home, her pain

Event photo by Amy Martz

dismissed. After her symptoms worsened, she returned twice to the ER before finally receiving the correct diagnosis of appendicitis. By that time, however, her appendix had burst, causing complications and a long recovery.

“Part of the reason I have the career I have today—making sure patients are listened to, that they are given care that is responsive to their needs and that physicians aren’t overlooking their pain simply because of the color of their

skin—is due to that time spent as a patient, feeling vulnerable, scared and unsure,” she writes in Legacy

In this generational memoir, Blackstock draws on her extensive medical career to illuminate the persistent inequalities in patient care and outcomes. She examines the many drivers behind these disparities, including affordability and access, racially biased medical instruments (devices that yield different results depending on a patient's race or ethnicity), race-based medical guidelines and the glaring underrepresentation of Black physicians in medical schools and hospitals.

A former associate professor of emergency medicine at New York University, Blackstock is the CEO of Advancing Health Equity, which partners with organizations to eliminate bias and discrimination in healthcare, cultivate an equitable organizational culture and improve health outcomes.

The Foundation, established in 2013, leads, funds, advocates and partners to create a community where everyone can live healthy lives. Its mission is to advance racially equitable health outcomes by improving the systems and conditions that shape them. It launched its Center for Health Equity in 2019. St. Pete Life is proud to partner with the Foundation to drive awareness of vital topics and celebrate the diversity of our community. LIVE OUT LOUD

Spring brings a fresh mix of music, community and local storytelling.

Radio St. Pete (RSP) Music Director J Kolb recently introduced a new live show hosted at the Thrive DTSP studio. The Bootleg Live Hour broadcast a jam with Grego Anderson—the Gulfport Troubadour and Marty Fouts of Those Love Birds. Anderson and Fouts performed some John Prine songs, as well as some originals.

Prine was a popular singer-songwriter of country-folk music who lived in Gulfport for some time. He was known for his signature blend of wit and warmth. His songs often mixed humor, love and everyday life with sharp social commentary and satire—alongside tender ballads and melancholy melodies that touched the heart.

Bootleg will be broadcast once a month and is seeking local songwriters to participate—two per show—to play cover songs by musicians who inspired them, share original music and discuss the artists who influenced their style and songwriting process.

In addition to this live show, you can tune in to The Songwriters Hour hosted by L.A. Moore at noon on Saturdays. Moore recently hosted the stories and songs of Big Jim Allen and Patrick Barmore. You can also stop at the Craftsman House Gallery from 10 am to noon on Saturdays and catch The Florida Folk Show with Pete Gallagher and his posse, hosting musicians and guests talking on environmental issues affecting Florida and our community. Check the online program guide for more information.

History Notes

From the St. Petersburg Museum of History

Contrary to popular belief, St. Petersburg’s reputation as a national hotbed of the arts is nothing new. Since its early days, St. Pete has been known as the “City of the Arts.”

Artists and art educators have found inspiration and opportunity in the Sunshine City for over 100 years. Dating back to 1907, art schools led by talented and renowned artists multiplied quickly and began creating a small but nationally recognized art scene in St. Pete. It began with the Miss M. Frances Williams School of Art in 1907 and expanded dramatically with the opening of the Winter Art School in Straub Park in 1916, which was located on 2nd Avenue Northeast and Beach Drive at the current site of the Museum of Fine Arts.

The trend of artists making their way to the Sunshine City continued in the 1920s, with well-known names like Mark Dixon Dodd, George Snow Hill and his wife, Polly Knipp Hill. Art education continued to be the center of the city's art world, and the tradition of St. Pete art schools continued with the creation of

early programs at St. Pete College, St. Petersburg High School, and Gibbs High School. This tradition then exploded with the creation of the Morean Arts Center and the DMG School.

These artists and educators made St. Petersburg the beacon of art that it is today.

Beautiful Beginnings, an exhibit highlighting the key figures who influenced art education in St. Pete, will be on view through July 27. To learn more, visit spmoh.com.

Chasing Dreams

As the world around us races toward instant success, many young people, driven by the pressure to 'make it big' early, need to recognize that true success isn’t a sprint to wealth—it’s a journey of gradual progress, financial insight and valuable life lessons.

My nephew recently was accepted into several universities and we are all so excited for him.

College is such a transformative time—making friends, exploring new things and figuring out life. When we spoke not long ago, he confessed that he’s overwhelmed because he hasn’t started a business or made his first million dollars yet. At 18, he’s already stressed about not hitting those milestones.

He’s been obsessed about creating a product or launching something online to become a multimillionaire by 21. I was stunned to hear the pressure he’s putting on himself. When I was his age, my biggest concern was scraping together gas

money to hit the beach with friends—not dreaming up million-dollar ideas.

This is not uncommon these days. When I chat with my adult children and other young professionals, they often talk about feeling pressure to “make it big” early, thanks in part to social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. Everyone is flaunting their wins and sharing advice on how to strike it rich, but barely anyone is posting about their failures. It’s a highlight reel, not the full story.

The reality is sobering. According to Adobe, nearly one in four people qualifies as a social media influencer. But NeoReach, an influencer marketing software solution that large

brands use to run influencer marketing campaigns, reports that almost half of them make $15,000 or less per year and only 15% earn more than $100,000 annually. Success stories are inspiring, but they’re not as common as many would like you to believe.

So how do we guide our kids through this maze of influencers and outlandish ambitions? It all starts with perspective—and a solid foundation in financial literacy. My stepson is in the finance program at Northeast High School, but this coursework should be required in every high school in America. If kids learned that saving $100 a month in a Roth IRA could turn into millions over time, it might ease some of that pressure. Of course, convincing them to wait 40 years for those results is another challenge entirely.

Making mistakes, especially financial ones, is part of growing up. My advice is to start with the basics. Spend less than you earn and build an emergency fund with six months' worth of living expenses—covering food, shelter and transportation—and set it aside in a savings account. Start investing in your employer’s retirement plan and contribute to an IRA or Roth IRA. Make small intentional decisions that will turn into big results down the road. Life isn’t about rushing to millionaire status. It’s about building meaningful experiences and achieving long-term goals, one step at a time.
