St Paul's School Impact Report 2024/25

Page 1

I continue to be inspired by the strength, generosity, and deep sense of shared purpose that defines the St Paul’s School community. In a financial landscape that remains challenging for many, it has been both humbling and uplifting to witness so many families, alumni, and friends of the school step forward to support our shared mission to enrich the life of our pupils and wider community.

Celebrating

Our bold campaign, Shaping Our Future: Next Steps, was launched to celebrate all that makes our community thrive, while laying the foundations for our continued evolution. A core focus of the campaign is the expansion of our bursary provision and partnership work; two areas where we are proud to be making real and lasting progress. The campaign continues to build momentum, fuelled by your enthusiasm and belief in the power of a St Paul’s education to shape lives.

Thanks to your unwavering support, our fundraising efforts in the 2024–25 academic year reached an extraordinary £2.19 million.

partnership with local schools, charities and educational organisations. Such as our Particle Physics Summer School in partnership with Queen Mary University of London, and the charity Beyond Ourselves, extending the impact of our school far beyond our own walls. They also serve to foster the boys’ involvement with a culture of service, empathy and shared learning that is integral to the St Paul’s ethos.

A key milestone this year has been the progress made on our new Junior School building. This purposedesigned space, set to open in the Spring Term of 2026, will provide a vibrant, modern environment that nurtures creativity, curiosity, and wellbeing in our youngest learners.

our community

Every gift, no matter the size, has contributed to this success and will leave a meaningful legacy for both our pupils and staff. Our means-tested Founder’s Awards remain central to our vision of accessibility and inclusivity. Over the last year, £4m was spent on funding bursaries and fee remissions, supporting 138 pupils on Founder’s Awards, an outcome made possible entirely through the generosity of our community.

Equally important is the continued growth of our partnership programmes, working closely with over 4,880 young people. A number of the programmes are supported by Pauls4All and enriched by the active involvement of our pupils and staff, working in

It stands as a symbol of our continued investment in excellence, innovation, and future generations.

I hope you find this report both informative and inspiring, as it showcases the many accomplishments made possible thanks to the dedication and kindness of our community. Whether through donations, volunteering your time, or having participated in our events, your support has made a meaningful difference and we are truly thankful for your ongoing involvement.

Partnerships

St Paul’s In Partnership

Behind the numbers reported here are hundreds of stories marking the depth as well as the breadth of impact our partnerships work has had this year. We have deepened our partnerships with three national multi-academy trusts, working with their schools in areas of high deprivation across England; E-ACT, Star and Lift. We continue to embed and enhance our community within the local West London area with St Paul’s School academic staff supporting their peers across the sciences, maths and humanities.

At the end of the academic year St Paul’s became the first school in the country to join the Higher Education Access Tracker (heat.ac.uk). This collaboration of 120+ universities and higher education institutions shares best practices in assessing the impact of their outreach and widening participation work. Membership will allow us to track the impact our partnership programmes have on a student’s full academic trajectory through to higher education. Through HEAT we also hope to expand our partnership with universities across our academic programmes.

Our primary programme continues to grow both locally and nationally through the Colet Mentoring App. Entrepreneurship goes from strength to strength, encompassing a greater number of students this year, particularly in the LSE Generate programme. Our community programmes have also evolved, and this year we welcomed the Barnes Children’s Literary Festival onsite along with hundreds of primary school-age students.

Through the passionate work of the partnerships and wider school team, over 4,800 partner schools students have been impacted through a total of almost 33,000 hours of activity!

“I

really enjoyed it at St Paul’s so thank you to all the staff, lecturers, volunteers and everyone there that gave us the wonderful opportunity to make friendships, learn about science, and broaden our insight into scientific fields.”

Founder’s Awards

Over the past year, our priority has been to ensure that families from all backgrounds have clear, accessible information about the bursary opportunities at St Paul’s. To support this, Catherine Bennett, Head of Bursaries, and Nick Arnold, Senior Deputy Head Pastoral at St Paul’s Juniors, hosted a live webinar attended by over 70 families. The session, now available as a recording on our website or by scanning the QR code below, offers guidance on the bursary assessment process, eligibility criteria and the wide range of support covered by the Founder’s Award programme.

To further empower families, we introduced an Eligibility Calculator on the Founder’s Award webpage. This simple tool allows parents to input basic financial details and receive an estimate of the bursary percentage they may qualify for.

We continue to support our current bursary recipients with regular updates from Catherine, outlining the full scope of what the Award covers. One of our most heartening initiatives this year was the Boot Sale, where St Paul’s families generously donated over 100 pairs of rugby and football boots that no longer fitted their sons. These were first offered free of charge to Founder’s Award families, with remaining pairs sold at the St Paul’s Juniors Sports Day, raising over £700 for the Bursary Fund. Unclaimed boots found new homes through our annual trip to Zambia, where pupils and staff donated them to a local school, and through a London college that has a high number of young people in care. These efforts reflect our ongoing commitment to inclusion, sustainability and community support.

Watch the webinar here:

*The dip in bursaries reflects natural fluctuations, as the numbers depend on the distribution of bursary recipients across year groups. Since the appointment of the Head of Bursaries in 2023, focus on promoting bursary opportunities and removing barriers to entry has contributed to the steady future increase in predicted bursary numbers.

Founder’s Award Profile

Harry Hickles OP (2018–23)

Founder’s Award Recipient

I attended St Paul’s for 11 years and was a recipient of the Bursary Fund for a large portion of my time here. I could never fully put into words just how much that this has allowed me to access so many great opportunities that would have never been available to me at any other place. I was involved in many plays in my time here, whilst also being in the 1st XI for football and I was Co-Head of my House, and won the House Cup in my final year.

With regard to my academic studies, I have found that the teaching at St Paul’s has prepared me so perfectly for what university has to offer. I still do think that the in-class discourses with Mrs McLaughlin and dialogues with Mr Anthony on the playwriting of Tennessee Williams were that of university standard – perhaps even a level above. Those conversations have provided me with the tools I required for academic debate and overall, shaped me to be a person with ideas and opinions.

FOUNDER’S AWARDS 2025-26

143

of whom 103 are in receipt of 75%+ awards

has offered me so much that I will forever feel indebted, and this would have only been possible with the bursary fund.

But it’s the people that really make St Paul’s special. Talking amongst my peers from my year group today, I can attest that it is those teachers taking their time out of their day, not only to fill your mind with their wealth of academic knowledge, but further having conversations that have shaped me as a man for years to come. Whether it was Edward Bailey and Nick Watkins always supporting me pastorally, or Christian Anthony teaching me valuable skills of organisation and dedication, or Daniel Pirrie working tirelessly to provide the opportunity to complete an EPQ in Filmmaking, no task was ever too big for any member of staff.

Ranging from the tragic King Lear, to the humorous The Rivals, or the fantastic feel-good musical Kiss Me, Kate, I was lucky enough to be in so many amazing theatrical performances, always expertly directed and organised. It is evident the time, effort and dedication that goes into not only the academics at this brilliant school, but also every extra-curricular activity that any young man could possibly dream of. One thing that I have taken away from my time here, is that if you want to do something at St Paul’s, you will always be able to, and be able to do so at the highest level.

I travelled over an hour to and from school every single day, and there was not one morning across my entire eleven-year tenure that I was not delighted to be arriving. All of the early morning wake ups, the late returns home after rehearsals, and weekends spent making memories on the football pitch; I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. This school

And of course, my time here has been made possible by the High Master, Sally-Anne Huang, who was there for me every step of the way. The school is a demonstration of her meticulous care, which is felt throughout the school. The time which she takes out for every single student, whether it was on the sidelines on the football field, or front row of the Dorfman Theatre, she is a prominent figure at the forefront of everything St Paul’s.

Philanthropy

Over the past year, the support and engagement of the St Paul’s community has been truly inspiring, a spirit that this report proudly reflects. Through our events and communications channels, the connection and unity across our network has encouragingly evolved.

From memorable gatherings such as the Spring Fling and the Henley Royal Regatta Reception, to a wide range of community-focused initiatives like New Parents’ Welcomes. Each event has contributed meaningfully to the amazing achievements of the past year. Most notably, that of our Shaping Our Future: Next Steps campaign, which is an important initiative to highlight our shared commitment to expanding bursary provision and developing strategic partnerships.

In parallel, our digital channels have remained essential tools for ensuring that our wider community remains informed and connected. It has been a genuine privilege for me to engage with so many of you throughout the year. We are excited to carry this energy forward and look ahead to all we can achieve together.

Shaping Our Future: Next Steps

Philanthropy remains central to life at St Paul’s. The generosity of our community – students, parents past and present, Old Paulines, staff, and friends – continues to inspire us. Support comes not only through donations, but also through the time, expertise, and enthusiasm so willingly offered by so many.

As we enter the final year of the Shaping Our Future: Next Steps campaign, we are proud of the extraordinary progress made together. This campaign, along with those before it, has highlighted the enduring strength of our community and its commitment to ensuring that talented young people can access a St Paul’s education and opportunities provided by the school, irrespective of financial circumstances.

For over five centuries, St Paul’s has upheld Colet’s founding principles, shaping the lives of many young men today. Our work is guided by the vision of our Founder, John Colet: a

vision of education that benefits both our pupils and the wider world, while also responding to the challenges of today’s independent school landscape.

The Next Steps campaign – a focused, two-year initiative – builds on Colet’s legacy with two clear aims. First, to expand access by enabling 10% of our pupils (around 151 boys) to receive support through our Founder’s Awards programme, breaking down financial barriers to entry. Second, to extend the reach of our partnership programme, strengthening long-term collaboration with schools, charities and organisations locally and nationally. With an ambitious target of £8.5 million to be achieved by the end of 2026, the campaign reflects our determination to widen opportunity and deepen impact.

The past year has demonstrated the remarkable difference we can achieve when we act together. Thank you to every member of our community for your steadfast commitment and belief in this shared vision.

Community and Events

Donor Events

We are lucky to have over 1,350 donors, who contribute to all areas of the school, from across our wider community made up of current parents, former parents, Old Paulines, staff and former staff, with even a few pupil donors.

We were delighted to host many of these donors across the year at various events including the Senior School Production of Oklahoma, the Senior School Carol Service, the Spring Concert, an art tour at Mercers’ Hall and dinners with the High Master for the Leadership, High Masters and Founder’s Circles, the latter also enjoying a tour of the new St Paul’s Junior School buildings.

The High Master and the Strategic Director of Development, Engagement and Marketing were also pleased to meet with donors in America last Autumn at the Head of the Charles Regatta, and more locally in summer at Henley Royal Regatta.

Parents’ Groups

Our Parents’ Groups across both schools, as well as the SPS Boat Club, work tirelessly to put on events and activities for our parent body. We would not be able to build such a welcoming community without their commitment and support.

The Senior School Parents’ Group runs second-hand uniform sales each term, with all funds raised being donated towards our Founder’s Awards, this year raising over £5,000.

Giving Day

This whole school activity saw everyone in our community come together across two days of in person and online challenges to raise as many funds as possible for our Shaping Our Future: Next Steps campaign. Pupils across both schools, current and former parents, staff, Old Paulines and friends of the school took part in activities and challenges, in person and online, to support our third Giving Day.

It was a colourful day on the school site – St Paul’s Juniors pupils donned their 80s workout gear for a mass aerobics challenge, St Paul’s Seniors teachers braced themselves for penalty shootouts and Senior School boys raced towards our fundraising target with a House Competition Fun Run, amongst a number of activities going on throughout the day.

Thanks to a number of very generous individuals who sponsored our challenge pots, our donors and pupils were able to complete challenges to unlock additional funding. The support we received from everyone taking part and making a donation was phenomenal, raising an unprecedented £305,473.

Alumni Relations

The embedding of a dedicated Alumni Relations team within the school and their work with a modernised Old Pauline Club (OPC), under the leadership of President Jeremy Withers Green, has had a positive effect on Alumni engagement. The international branches of the OPC have been refreshed and events held in new countries including Spain and Greece. More hubs in the USA have been established, to complement the large New York branch.

As well as increased Old Pauline (OP) attendance at the Professional Networking events in Law, Finance, Medicine, Entrepreneurship and Real Estate, new engaged groups have been launched including OP Pride, an Armed Forces Group and a new Musicians Group to add to the list of affiliate clubs including sports clubs and the OP Lodge. 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 year Reunions for OPs were well attended at St Paul’s in June and our series of University events at Bristol, Cambridge, Durham, Edinburgh, London and Oxford proved very popular again with on average 40 OPs at each. In 2025–26 we will look to put on similar events for students at universities in America.

The larger OPC events included the OPC Annual Dinner in October (110 attendees), the Feast Service Supper (120 attendees) and the Earliest Vintage Lunch (85 attendees).

Pauls4All

Pauls4All represents all pupil-led service and fundraising on a local, national and international level. It seeks to build links between the pupils and the communities they are part of, to understand the challenges individuals, charities and NGOs face, whilst also providing opportunities for leadership and collaboration. Pauls4All is made up of The Thomas Gresham Committee, who fundraise for and create awareness of the school’s Founder’s Awards programme and The Charities Committee, who fundraise and provide voluntary service for charities chosen by the school as well as supporting the partnerships programme.

The Thomas Gresham Committee (TGC)

The Thomas Gresham Committee for 2024–25, made up of Henry, Alex, Vyom, Nabil, Charlie, Dom, Ebuka, Shrey, Andrew, Ishaan, Jago, Ishan and Sam (pictured below) raised over £19,000, an incredible effort that will have a lasting impact for the Thomas Gresham Founder’s Award. They kicked off their fundraising efforts of the year with the ever-popular Thomas Gresham Quiz, attracting guests from both St Paul’s Senior and St Paul’s Junior to pit their wits against each

other. This was quickly followed by the Thomas Gresham St Paul’s Junior’s Readathon, encouraging pupils to read to their hearts’ content over the Christmas holidays whilst collecting sponsorship, and the introduction of the weekly TGC Sweet Sale for Senior School pupils, a real hit for all!

The 2024–25 committee has also introduced the 1509 Challenge, which they will be running in Autumn 2025 – this fundraiser is in celebration of our founding year, encouraging pupils to create a personal challenge around the number 1509 and raise as much money as possible for the Thomas Gresham Founder’s Award. So far, the committee alone have raised over £5,000 over the summer holidays with challenges such as cycling 1,509km, composing a piece of music with 1,509 notes, reading 15 books, and doing 150 press ups for a day over 9 days. The challenge launched on 15 September (15/09) to the whole school and we look forward to seeing everyone get involved.

The

Charities Committee

It has been another successful year for the Charities Committee, full of great events, lots of money raised, and most pivotally a breadth of impacts and improvements to our surrounding community.

After passing the old ‘tray of random items’ memory test, I was lucky enough to earn a place at Colet Court (as it was known then). Somehow, I then made it through Common Entrance and into the ‘big school,’ where my main concern was whether the larger cricket ball would still swing! With my mother on a low wage at the BBC, I was fortunate to receive a bursary to help cover the fees.

That incredible opportunity shaped me. It made me determined to help ensure that other children from less privileged backgrounds can experience everything this school has to offer, not just in the classroom, but on the playing fields, on the river, in the theatre, concert hall, and science labs. St Paul’s is a place where the talented staff help pupils discover their ‘edge,’ their unique ‘superpower’ that will help them stand out in whatever path they choose later in life.

When my wife and I were considering St Paul’s for our sons, we met with the then High Master, Mark Bailey.

He captured the school’s spirit perfectly: “St Paul’s is one of the most elite schools in the country with the least sense of entitlement.” That balance is only possible when the school community includes as wide a cross-section of students as possible. Diversity at St Paul’s doesn’t just enrich the school; it helps shape well-rounded individuals ready for the world beyond.

That’s why it’s so important to support the school’s bursary programme, however you can, in whatever way you can. Every contribution helps open the door for the next generation to thrive.

“Having been part of St Paul’s School and the Junior School since I was eight, I’m immensely proud to play even a small part in supporting the 1509 Society.”

Building to Inspire

A cornerstone of our concluded Renewal Campaign and Shaping Our Future Campaign was the ambitious project to update and enhance our school buildings.

A campus for the future

Our commitment to creating exciting, high-quality facilities for our pupils has inspired the construction of our new Junior School building, opening in January 2026, alongside the re-developments of the boathouse. These works combine exceptional design with strong links to outdoor learning. Plans for the St Paul’s boathouse are advancing promisingly, which will modernise the facilities for training, socialising and coaching. Together, they complete our vision for a state-of-the-art learning environment.

St Paul’s Juniors

Watch our fly-through video of the building in progress from September 2025

The construction of two new, state-of-the-art buildings for St Paul’s Juniors commenced in June 2023 and is now in its final stages having remained on time and on budget throughout. This major project represents a significant investment in the future of our School that will not only enhance the learning opportunities for our pupils but also provide a warm, welcoming context that is a joy to experience. The buildings will be in use as of early 2026, boasting facilities including a Hall/ Theatre large enough for the entire St Paul’s Junior community, art studios, computing suites, libraries, flexible and innovative learning areas, and a range of outdoor zones to stimulate play and scholarship in equal measure. In line with our vision of providing an outstanding education that supports every pupil’s personal and intellectual growth, these buildings will mark an exciting new chapter in the School’s history.

Rowing has long been at the heart of life at St Paul’s. As early as 1830, Pauline crews have taken to the water to compete against the best clubs around the country. The sport is now a key part of the School’s history and traditions.

For some pupils, rowing will be a defining part of their school years, while for others it becomes a lifelong pursuit, enriched by the friendships and discipline forged on the river. Many Old Paulines have gone on to represent Great Britain on the world stage, achieving success at the Olympics, most recently with two Bronze medals in Paris 2024, and securing a number of Gold medals at the World Championships and U19 World Championships in 2025.

It has been over 50 years since our current boathouse was opened. The boathouse sits at the northeast corner of the school site near the halfway mark of the Championship Course: the stretch of the river used for the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. It is one of the oldest CLASP buildings on site and without this

refurbishment would require replacement by the end of the 2020s. With the support of our community, we are keen to introduce changes that will better support the needs of the programme and withstand the growing numbers of pupils interested in this sport.

Our plan is to lay a path around the boathouse to the riverfront, featuring 140 inscribed flagstones. Highly visible at the heart of the school, this path will be a lasting monument to our pupils, parents, OPs and staff, and will be a focal point at St Paul’s for generations to come.

For a donation of £750 your gift will be recognised on a flagstone, with a two-line message, of 16 characters per line (including spaces and punctuation).

If you would like to find out more about supporting the Boathouse Campaign, please contact the Development Office at community@stpaulsschool.org.uk

Finances

Despite continuing to face a number of financial challenges in the short term, including VAT on fees, the loss of charitable business rates relief and other inflationary cost pressures, the school remains in a strong position financially to meet these challenges. We hope to continue to build our endowed bursary funds during the course of the current and future fundraising campaigns in order to provide income to support our future bursary and partnership ambitions.

Summary

The next phase of the renewal programme, utilising the remainder of the £50m of long-term debt funding secured on the rebuilding of St Paul’s Juniors, is scheduled to be completed by the end of the calendar year 2025. This will deliver world class school facilities for our community for the next 50 years and beyond.

The school does not currently benefit from large endowed bursary funds, but we hope to continue to build on this during the final year of the Shaping Our Future: Next Steps campaign and during future campaigns in order to provide income to fund future bursaries. It also remains critical that our fundraising continues to be successful and sustainable if we are to be able to support our future bursary and partnership ambitions. This will involve continuing to develop additional income streams through the school’s trading subsidiary company, St Paul’s School Enterprises Limited, including the hiring of the school’s facilities, the sale of merchandise and commercialising the school’s intellectual property. That being said, we need to be mindful of the current threats facing the independent school sector including VAT on fees, the loss of charitable business rates relief and other cost pressures and to adjust our financial strategy accordingly so that we continue to meet the covenants on our long-term debt funding.

Annual Income

In 2023/24 school fees accounted for 82.6% of the school’s total income (£44.4m). Fundraising contributed £2.4m (4.4% of total income) representing the first year of the Shaping Our Future: Next Steps campaign. The school’s investments, including unrealised gains of £3.8m, earned £6.8m (12.7% of total income).

Annual Expenditure

Staff, operating, trading, finance, fundraising costs and depreciation account for 88% of the total annual costs. £0.7m was paid by the school out of income to fund bursaries and other fee remissions, with a further £3.3m being provided from restricted fundraised bursary funds. Retained surpluses will continue to be used to fund future capital expenditure and significant refurbishment of the school estate together with providing additional bursary and partnership support as required.

Balance Sheet

The school continues to have a strong balance sheet with total reserves of £127.7m at 31 August 2024. £116.4m is represented by capitalised buildings and other assets that cannot be realised. The majority of the school’s restricted and unrestricted bursary funds together with the annual contributions to the Future Estate Capital Fund are held as investments in equities and funds with Waverton Investment Management Limited and Rathbone Investment Management Limited (Sarasin & Partners from November 2024). Cash not required for the school’s immediate operating and project needs is invested in term deposits and notice accounts.

Legacy Giving

Leaving a lasting legacy

For many, making a gift in their Will represents the most significant donation they will give in their lifetime. We understand that this is a deeply personal decision. Such a gift to St Paul’s leaves a lasting impact for generations to come, enriching the lives of countless future Paulines who would not otherwise be able to afford it, through the invaluable gift of education.

The Colet Society, our legacy giving society, was established in 2019 as a way of expressing gratitude to those who intend to leave a gift in their Will for St Paul’s School. Over time, the society has grown into a community of supportive Old Paulines, former parents, and staff.

Did you know that a gift of just 1% in your Will to St Paul’s will provide a life-changing education to future Paulines through our Founder’s Awards bursaries, while leaving 99% to those closest to you?

The benefits

Aside from the impact such gifts have on the school, any sum you bequeath to St Paul’s is not only free of tax but may also reduce the overall tax liability on your estate.

For more information or to discuss legacy giving in confidence, please contact the Development Team on 020 8748 9162 or community@stpaulsschool.org.uk

“It only seems natural to want to give back something to an institution that provided such a positive and formative role in my future life: academically, in my career and in my social life. St Paul’s seems to have gone from strength to strength since my era, and I am very happy to bequeath a small share of my good fortune to help others in the future.”

John East OP (1960–65) and Former Old Pauline Club President

you

A huge thank

Our sincere thanks goes to all those Old Paulines, current and former parents, staff, friends of St Paul’s, and Trusts and Foundations who have supported our fundraising efforts over the past year by making a gift or informing us of their intention to leave a gift in their Will. This list recognises all our benefactors who have given to the Shaping Our Future: Next Steps campaign and qualify as members of one of our philanthropic circles. We also acknowledge with gratitude those who have chosen to give anonymously. The list is correct to 31 August 2025.

Please advise us if we have mistakenly omitted your name and if you would like to be included in future lists or if you have a query around your philanthropic circle. We will happily rectify any errors.
