Thank you from the High Master As we approach the end of the Shaping Our Future campaign, I am humbled by the generosity of our remarkable community and by the impact that has been achieved.

Through these collective efforts, over the last five years we have raised an incredible total of £19.3 million, with the majority of the funds directed towards growing our bursary provision. These contributions have opened doors of opportunity for talented pupils who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to access all that St Paul’s has to offer.

In this report, we are also excited to share more about our thriving partnerships work, which has been expanding in both scope and impact. Collaborations such as Colet Mentoring, Primary Professors and the West London Partnership have flourished, providing valuable support and opportunities for the sharing of expertise and facilities between schools in the state and independent sectors.

These partnerships have proven to be instrumental in providing pupils with a well-rounded and enriching educational experience. By working closely with St Paul’s Girls’ School on these initiatives, we also offer our ‘best of both worlds’ approach, where our boys receive an excellent education within our institution, while also benefiting from essential social development opportunities reflective of the world beyond our school grounds. The recent recognition of our Partnerships team through the Education Business STEM Award for our innovative summer schools programme further exemplifies the transformative impact of our partnerships.

As we reach the end of the Shaping Our Future campaign, we are currently focused on fundraising for the refurbishment of our Boathouse, a project that holds immense significance for our rowing programme. Do look out for updates on our plans later on in this report.

In the meantime, may I thank you once again for your unwavering support – whether you have contributed through financial donations, volunteering your time, or simply attending an event.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BURSARIES AT ST PAUL’S

W

e asked some of our staff and governors about St Paul’s pupils and why bursaries are so important to our community.

What is special about teaching Paulines?

What makes a St Paul’s education so valuable?

LT: They’re all very motivated. Whatever they do, they do to their best.

CA: I think what makes a St Paul’s education so valuable is actually what happens outside of the classroom. The breadth of lunchtime societies, the range of trips, the sporting opportunities and the standard of the performing arts.

RMcG: So it’s really normal for pupils to be stretched academically within the lesson, but then go on and ace it on the sports field.

CG: Hopefully, what we’re generating in the boys is a sense of a lifelong love of learnings, not just learning for learning sake, and not just to get an A or an A*.

OS: They’re very warm.

They’re very dynamic.

CG: I think that they are really intellectually inquisitive and so that means, for me as a teacher, it’s a pleasure to teach them.

They’re really quick to take up new concepts and quick to learn.

Why are bursaries so important to St Paul’s?

CG: I think, for me, that bursaries are important because it all ties in with John Colet’s original vision about educating boys from all nations and backgrounds.

CA: The more pupils we have on bursaries, then the greater the variety of voices we have in our community.

OS: We see the bursary boys every year make a huge contribution to school life, to become fully integrated so that we have a diverse, thriving and inclusive environment and ethos here.

EV: We’re able to change the lives of so many pupils who have the ability to come and study at St Paul’s.

A COMMUNITY LIKE NO OTHER I am delighted to present our 2022-2023 Impact Report.

This report showcases the extraordinary progress we have achieved together over the past five years. Your steadfast support has been the driving force behind the success of the Shaping Our Future campaign.

Events such as our second Giving Day, Old Pauline Telethon conducted by recent leavers, Spring Fling, SPJ Teachers vs Parents football match, and Christmas Appeal have played a crucial role in our success. Your generous contributions and active participation have allowed us to support 128 pupils through bursaries in the 2023-24 academic year.

As we move forward, I sincerely hope that you’ll be able to join us at one or more events this year and I’m looking forward to meeting and connecting with you in person.

ST PAUL’S IN PARTNERSHIP At St Paul’s, there is genuine enthusiasm for fostering partnerships and engaging in charitable endeavours.

We hold a steadfast commitment to extending our expertise and resources to communities at local, national, and international levels.

Colet Mentoring

CHARITIES The St Paul’s Charity Committee has worked hard to fundraise for and increase awareness about our chosen local charities: City Harvest, Friends of Barnes Common, London Sports Trust, Doorstep, GOSH (UK Charity of the Year), and international charity, Beyond Ourselves. In July, 18 Sixth Form volunteers spent ten days with Beyond Ourselves.

The SPS Pauls4All Charity Committee for 2022-23 successfully embedded our local charity partners within the new House system and led a series of campaigns that were aimed at educating the school community about the charities we support. This included the inaugural Charities Convention which featured activities, talks and a massive food drive during Pauls4All Week (the largest school collection in City Harvest’s experience). In addition to our charity partners, Mary’s Meals, Turkey Mozaik Foundation and St Mary’s Ukrainian School spoke at the event. Mufti days and internal competitions were vital in relaying this message, and it was heartwarming to see parents and pupils respond by giving generously.

COLET MENTORING The Colet Mentoring programme continues to be a popular choice for St Paul’s pupil volunteering. The mobile app, developed by Old Pauline brothers, Phil Kwok OP (2010-15) and Dom Kwok OP (2009-13), has enabled us to create a flexible volunteering programme for our pupils and partner schools’ volunteers to connect with students in different locations. In the last academic year, the platform hosted 1,550 mentoring sessions, connecting 150 mentors with 290 students, offering free academic support in STEM subjects.

WEST LONDON PARTNERSHIP Comprising six independent schools and six local state schools, the West London Partnership was established with the intent of fostering mutual growth and learning. Within this context, the Start It Entrepreneurship programme was seamlessly integrated, featuring impactful events tailored to various year groups

(Years 8 to 12) and even extending to alumni. As part of this programme, we recently held the Start It Sustainable Entrepreneurship course.

Furthermore, an active pupil committee representing all 12 schools within the West London Partnership collaborates regularly to coordinate pupil-driven events.

PRIMARY PROFESSORS Now in its second year and building on a similar programme that existed pre-COVID, the Primary Professors academic enrichment programme runs lessons in everything from STEM to Entrepreneurship and Philosophy. Throughout the year, 100 Year 5 pupils from 30 local primary schools have taken part and been given access to Colet Mentoring, and around 20 Year 12 pupils from St Paul’s School and St Paul’s Girls’ School have volunteered on the programme.

VOLUNTEERING AND SERVICE IN THE COMMUNITY All Lower Eighth pupils volunteer in the Autumn and Spring Terms, usually with one of our partner schools or charities – an initiative linked with the PSHE and the General Studies curriculum.

Many pupils choose to continue during the Summer Term and all Eighth Form pupils have the opportunity to volunteer as part of their Wednesday ‘Games Half’. In addition, a selection of volunteering opportunities are made available to the Sixth Form once they have completed their GCSEs, with around 80 students taking part last year.

Most Fifth Form pupils regularly volunteer for their Duke of Edinburgh Award. Volunteers from the Sixth Form offered their support to the Barnes Children’s Literature Festival, including their schools programme in Barnes and Twickenham, as well as during the festival. Furthermore, the school has been hosting monthly events for Litsoc in the John Colet Hall, providing a platform for our young community to come together Start It course

and engage with authors. Throughout the school, there are also opportunities for pupils to volunteer online via Colet Mentoring.

STEM SUMMER SCHOOLS As in previous years, more than 60 Year 10 students from state schools across the UK travelled to St Paul’s for one of two three-day residential Summer Schools in Materials Science and Particle Physics.

A noteworthy achievement is the Education Business STEM Award recently earned by our Partnerships team. This prestigious acknowledgment underscores the innovative nature of our Summer Schools programme and reaffirms the transformative influence of our partnerships on education. We were also selected as a finalist in the Independent Schools of the Year 2023 awards in the Outstanding Educational Partnerships category.

USE OF SCHOOL FACILITIES BY THE WIDER COMMUNITY Sporting clubs are run by both St Paul’s staff and local volunteers, and offer young people a range of activities throughout the year. Additionally, our commitment to the community extends to offering our facilities to local primary and secondary schools, as well as charitable organisations, free of charge.

Our facilities hosted a variety of community events this summer, including the SW London Green Power event, free football coaching sessions, tennis activities, a basketball afternoon, and community activities for Ukrainian children.

BUILDING AWARENESS FOR BURSARIES This year we have highlighted bursary opportunities at in-person educational events and publications aimed at educators, parents and pupils.

We have also implemented a digital campaign focusing on the 11+ and 16+ entry points for state school pupils.

The school has recruited for a Head of Bursaries position. This is a newly created role which will focus on supporting pupils and families on bursaries within the St Paul’s community.

PHILANTHROPY – SHAPING OUR FUTURE When we initiated our ambitious Shaping Our Future campaign in May of 2019, our objective was straightforward: to honour John Colet’s original vision and sustain his legacy, thereby shaping a brighter future for countless generations of Paulines yet to come.

Our plan had three key pillars. Firstly, it aimed to uphold the principle of Excellence without Exclusivity by broadening access to St Paul’s for those boys who possess the academic ability but may lack the necessary financial means. Secondly, it aspired to foster partnerships with our local and broader community. Finally, it sought to enhance our facilities under the banner of “Building to Inspire.”

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the 350 attendees, £270,000 was raised on the night alone. To date, the Spring Fling committee has raised an astonishing £1.3 million.

During these calls, they not only facilitated donations but also enjoyed engaging in conversations with fellow Old Paulines about life at the school and updating them on the Shaping Our Future appeal.

In conclusion, an impressive total of £110,000 was raised.

SPRING FLING The annual Spring Fling, a highly anticipated parent-led event, took place at the Hurlingham Club in March of this year. Parents from both St Paul’s School and St Paul’s Juniors came together for an unforgettable evening.

Upon joining St Paul’s in the Fourth Form, I was immediately aware of the privilege I was to hold, not just for the next five years, but for the rest of my life.

The immense breadth and quality of opportunities on offer at the school is second to none and the environment in which they are presented is both nurturing and competitive. It is within this environment that all Paulines can thrive and develop. Very few other students in the country are awarded the advantages that follow from these opportunities.

That is why it is vital that we allow all academically-able pupils, regardless of their financial means, the opportunity to seize everything St Paul’s has to offer.

This belief is held not merely as a charitable endeavour to widen access to our school, but because the exclusion of the most talented students on financial grounds undermines the foundational academic prowess of this institution.

GIVING DAY The second St Paul’s School Giving Day took place on 23 and 24 April, once again bringing together our entire community, both physically and digitally.

Having worked within the school’s Development Office for a number of months, I am acutely aware of its ambitions for growth.

I am also aware of how hard the whole team works in the name of improving St Paul’s for its students and the wider community. I know how much my small donation is valued and that I am contributing to a project that truly is beneficial.

The focus of Giving Day was to support our current and future bursary students. Additionally, the funds raised will play a vital role in expanding our partnerships work within our local community and beyond. We extend our thanks to our generous Challenge Donors whose unwavering sponsorship allowed us to run multiple challenges throughout the day. The collective effort of our community saw 775 individual donors raise over £460,000.

I am proud of the partnership, charity and bursary opportunities that my donation will aid. My hope is that bursaries at St Paul’s continue to grow, so that we can offer even greater access to the school for talented individuals from all backgrounds.

OLIVER SACKS BURSARY AWARD During our Giving Day celebrations, we proudly introduced a new bursary award that pays tribute to one of our most esteemed Old Paulines, renowned neuroscientist Oliver Sacks OP (1946-51). This award has been championed by an Old Pauline and

is designed to offer a bursary in perpetuity to a deserving pupil. In honour of Dr Sacks, we organised a screening of the film Awakenings, featuring Robert De Niro. This film powerfully portrays Dr Sacks’ work during the 1970s with the drug L-DOPA. We are thrilled to announce that the community’s generous contributions have allowed us to raise an impressive total of £85,335 for the bursary award.

CHRISTMAS BAUBLES AND CHRISTMAS APPEAL This year’s Christmas Appeal was met with exceptional enthusiasm, fuelled by the collaboration with Stella McCartney, renowned fashion designer and SPS parent. The outcome of this collaboration was the creation of the St Paul’s limited edition Christmas Bauble. The bauble, exquisitely designed by Stella McCartney, quickly became a highly sought-after item with some parents choosing to purchase more than one.

The parent community rallied behind last year’s Christmas Appeal, resulting in an impressive fundraising total of £200,950.

OLD PAULINE 150TH APPEAL In 2021, we celebrated 150 years of the Old Pauline Club under the leadership of former President, Lord Vaizey of Didcot. In consultation with his fellow OPs he set an ambitious fundraising target of £1.5m for the two years of his presidency, to ensure that the socio-economic diversity of the school is retained. OPs were generous in their support through a series of events and campaigns, including a successful dinner held at The Tabernacle.

The total donated to this appeal now stands at £2.9m and we now have 9% of OPs giving to the school’s appeals, nearing our ambition of 10%.

EXCELLENCE WITHOUT EXCLUSIVITY John Colet, Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral, founded the school in 1509 with a clear vision to educate able boys to serve society ‘from all nacions and countres indifferently’ regardless of race, creed or social background. This vision continues to guide the modern school and places bursaries at the heart of what we do, with 128 pupils on bursaries for the 2023-24 academic year (a reduction on the previous year).

I have been at St Paul’s for 14 years; 11 years as a student and three as staff, working in the Development Office. When the High Master, Sally-Anne Huang, first floated the idea of being a ‘Fundraising Gappie’ to me in 2020, I was very excited at the prospect of being able to raise money towards a bursary fund that had given me the opportunity to attend St Paul’s, and help others enjoy the life-changing opportunity that I had.

Tutor comment about a leaver bursary student

One of our exciting opportunities involves inspiring eligible boys to consider applying for a St Paul’s bursary, a challenge we are actively tackling through our marketing efforts, partnerships and the creation of a new Head of Bursaries role.

We are very proud of our bursary students and over the last ten years, their university destinations have included University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, London School of Economics, Royal Academy of Music, University of Bristol and the University of Manchester, as well as universities abroad including Duke University, Stanford University, Yale University, Harvard University and McGill University.

Looking back now as a university student, I am struck by two aspects of Pauline life which are unique: the teaching and the co-curricular activities. On teaching, I recall my coursemates at university being shocked by the intimacy and interactive nature of the ‘Oxford seminar’. I was not shocked – to me, they were the same format as my A Level English classes with Miss Warner and Mr Broughton, with eight people sitting round a table debating literature. It seems apparent to me now that St Paul’s is, in so many ways, a pseudouniversity: the quality of discussion in those classes was equal to, and possibly even surpasses, my classes at Oxford.

The range of co-curricular opportunities is still unfathomable to me now. In my time, I was a keen

rugby, fives and cricket player; the professional standard facilities at school were key in nurturing my admittedly not prodigious sporting talent. I sang in the seven different singing groups the school had to offer, in the concert-grade Wathen Hall and even in the spectacular St Paul’s Cathedral.

I had English Society on Wednesday lunchtimes, the PaskSoc molecular biology society on Thursdays and I volunteered at the Ace of Clubs homeless shelter on Fridays.

The diversity of activities is still inconceivable to me. My stint in Development and Engagement taught me that our tagline is ‘Uniquely St Paul’s’; I can say with certainty that, as schools go, St Paul’s is unique.

In my 14 years here, I have given countless tours – to prospective parents, to Old Paulines, to students, to donors and new colleagues. Whilst my primary ‘tour-giving’ focus would be highlighting the teaching and activities which pupils enjoy, I would now end them with the simple statement that St Paul’s has given me everything I have – my friends, my job, my university career and my future. If Andrew Broughton hadn’t been such a superlative teacher, or if Suzie Squire hadn’t encouraged me to follow my passions, I wouldn’t be where I am right now. The fact is that I could not have attended the school and enjoyed the opportunities I have without the school’s bursary fund. By donating to the bursary fund, you promote excellence without exclusivity and you therefore enrich a community that is not just near the top of the academic league tables, but is also a truly life-changing place.

BUILDING TO INSPIRE

Shaping the Future of Rowing at St Paul’s A Boathouse fit for the 21st Century

BOATHOUSE APPEAL As we approach the end of the Shaping Our Future appeal, we are delighted to be moving forward with the Boathouse Appeal. At the request of Bobby Thatcher, Director of Rowing, and the coaching team, we have been able to put together refurbishment plans which will develop alongside the training programme with minimal disruption. Our hope is that the first stage of the upgrade work will commence in 2024, assuming the initial funding is in place.

A new home for rowing Our improved home for rowing will make the best use of our proximity to the river by opening up views within and around the buildings, and will include: – an improved gym area – an upgrade of the pupils’ changing rooms and showers and the addition of staff facilities – a purpose-built extension to include a staff/coach room, student debrief room and a kitchenette and laundry – a new roof with skylights for daylight and natural ventilation – new, large sliding gates, improving access for the manoeuvring of boats – cladding of the external walls

EAST PAVILION Planning permission willing, the new East Pavilion will provide much needed facilities and a community space for pupils and local community groups using the pitches. The club room within the Pavilion will be available for pre and post-match teas, and function as a sports space for yoga, circuit training and dance classes. The Pavilion’s ‘diamond shape’ provides excellent sightlines across the pitches, while the angled timber screens blend seamlessly into its environs and encapsulate noise from the building and games. The Pavilion will be a beautiful, purposeful space that is respectful to the needs of the local inhabitants as well as nesting birds.

ST PAUL’S JUNIORS We have now started the next phase of the renewal programme, utilising the remainder of the £50m of longterm debt funding secured on the rebuilding of St Paul’s Juniors, which is scheduled to be completed during the 2025 academic year.

The demolition of the old junior school was completed over the summer break and we are delighted that work is set to begin. We look forward to sharing updates and photos with parents as the new building begins to take shape.

The path will feature 140 inscribed flagstones. Highly visible at the heart of the school, this path will be a lasting monument to our pupils, parents, OPs and staff, and will be a focal point at St Paul’s for generations to come. ANNUAL EVENTS PROGRAMME Our events programme aims to engage the entire community, fostering connections and a sense of belonging for Paulines and parents during their time at St Paul’s and beyond. Formal or informal, educational or social, in person or virtual; there was something for everyone in 2022-23.

SHAPING OUR FUTURE THROUGH EVENTS The past year has seen the return of many much-loved fundraising events, as well as the introduction of some new ones, including the Children of Ukraine documentary screening which benefited St Mary’s Ukrainian School. Fundraising events in aid of the Shaping our Future bursary appeal are at the heart of our events calendar – from the Spring Fling to the friendly rivalry of the Parents vs Teachers football match. The pupil-led Thomas Gresham Committee continued their legacy of success with the highly anticipated annual quiz night and the SPJ Readathon. In April, we were delighted to return to on-site activity for Giving Day with two days of sports challenges, competitions, coffee mornings and a screening of Awakenings to launch the brand-new bursary to honour Oliver Sacks OP (1946-51). In the Summer Term, parents and OPs enjoyed a trip to the Henley Regatta for a reception to launch the new Boathouse Appeal.

EDUCATION FOR ALL As well as the extensive social and fundraising calendar, we provided a comprehensive programme of engaging and informative talks for our global community. Our Topical Tuesdays series continued with topics ranging from the Energy Crisis with Olly Paish OP (1979-83), to Nationalism with St Paul’s Teacher of History, Andrea Ruddick, and professional chess with former Grandmaster, Julian Hodgson OP (1976-81). We are grateful to all of our expert speakers for sharing their specialisms with such passion and knowledge. We also enjoyed giving parents the opportunity to return to the classroom with the continuation of our Masterclass series, this year hearing from St Paul’s teacher Dr Phil Gaydon on the Philosophy of Education.

PROFESSIONAL NETWORKS This year we were delighted to see the return of the full programme of Professional Networks with events in Real Estate, Engineering, Law, Not-for-Profit, Finance and Entrepreneurship. These aim to connect those working in specific fields and provide a platform for Paulines and younger Old Paulines to seek career guidance from those more established in the field. Across the six networks, guests were able to benefit from the experience of our wide range of experts from the St Paul’s community. From the London Stock Exchange Group

headquarters to the DWF offices in the Walkie-Talkie and the LocalGlobe base in King’s Cross, guests were lucky to experience these networks in stunning locations across London where they were provided with unique insights as to how to aspire to these professions.

Pauline Perspectives

PARENTS’ GROUPS Our Parents’ Groups continued to provide an engaging and enriching programme of events, from smaller year group gatherings to large community-wide events, such as the annual Pauline Perspectives which welcomed debaters from St Paul’s Girls’ School to the panel for the first time this year. Our parent committees continued to organise formal and informal social gatherings throughout the year, including coffee mornings, the SPJ Quiz Night and the SPS Festive Wine Tasting. A highlight was the SPJ Christmas Fayre which welcomed 1,000 guests on-site to enjoy festive games, stalls and refreshments. St Paul’s Art Association (SPARTA) held a number of artists’ talks as well as the newly formed Sunday Mornings in Art series exploring various exhibitions and artists around London. The Boat Club community enjoyed their longstanding traditions with the annual dinner and the Plum Pudding races at Christmas.

OLD PAULINE CLUB As well as the long-standing traditions of the Annual Dinner, Feast Service and Earliest Vintage Luncheon, the Old Pauline Club engaged an even greater number of alumni this year with the introduction of new social events. This included the summer drinks celebration, and, after a three-year pandemic hiatus, the return of reunions. Back with a bang, more than 340 Old Paulines attended their reunions across three days celebrating 5, 10, 20, 30 or 40 years since leaving St Paul’s. At the end of the Autumn Term, the Class of 2022 also reunited to catch up on life beyond St Paul’s after their first term away.

In 2021-22, school fees accounted for 89.8% of the school’s total income (£38.2m). Fundraising efforts yielded an additional £3.6 million, representing 8.5% of the total income, thanks to the ongoing success of the Shaping Our Future campaign. The school’s investments generated £0.6m (1.4% of total income).

Staff, operating, trading, finance, fundraising costs and depreciation account for 85.8% of the total annual costs.

Additionally, the school allocated £0.8 million from its income to support bursaries and other fee reductions, while an additional £3.1 million was sourced from restricted fundraising for bursaries. The school’s investments incurred unrealised losses of £0.8 million, in line with the typical performance of the overall stock market. Retained surpluses will be used to fund future capital expenditure and significant refurbishment of the school estate together with providing additional bursary and partnership support as required.

Summary

The school maintains a robust balance sheet, with total reserves of £123.1m as of 31 August 2022. £110.2m is represented by capitalised buildings and other assets that cannot be realised.

The majority of the school’s restricted and unrestricted bursary funds, together with the first annual contribution to the Future Estate Capital Fund, are held as investments in equities and funds with Waverton Investment Management Limited and Rathbone Investment Management Limited. Any cash not immediately needed for the school’s day-to-day operations and projects is placed in term deposits.

The next phase of the renewal programme is now well underway, utilising the remainder of the £50m of long-term debt funding secured, on the rebuilding of St Paul’s Juniors, which is scheduled to be completed prior to the start of the 2025-26 academic year. This will deliver world-class school facilities for our community for the next 50 years and beyond.

The school currently lacks significant endowed bursary funds, but we aim to enhance this during the next phase of our fundraising campaign to secure funding for future bursaries.

Maintaining successful and sustainable fundraising is crucial for supporting our bursary and partnership goals. This will involve continuing to develop additional income streams through the school’s trading subsidiary company, St Paul’s School Enterprises Limited, including the hiring of the school’s facilities, the sale of merchandise and commercialising the school’s intellectual property.
