—Albert Einstein Over the last year, despite the challenges of the pandemic, we kept our balance, and we kept moving forward in pursuit of our four school-wide strategic goals. We are making steady progress with upgrades to our outdoor spaces, enhancements of our school-wide social and emotional learning and leadership programs, faculty growth and professional development, and expansion of our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

With your help, we successfully fundraised for the west playground and opened this year with a transformed new space for our students. We will tackle the south playground next. With lessons learned from the pandemic, we are updating our existing plan to allow for a combined play and outdoor learning environment.

Last year, behind the scenes, our teachers learned the key tools of our RULER social and emotional program. We are now in the process of rolling out the program to our students and families. The RULER program will help all of us better understand and manage our emotions while improving our intrapersonal and interpersonal skills.

In addition to RULER training, our teachers sought individual professional development, and we amplified our school-wide focus on project-based learning (PBL). As a team, our faculty participated in PBL training during our August 2021 in-service, and we have a three-day immersive PBL training 2 ST. PAUL’S EPISCOPAL DAY SCHOOL

experience planned after Christmas break. Through this training, we will deepen our commitment to developing confident learners through studentcentered programming.

As an Episcopal school, we are called to love our neighbor, to strive for justice and peace among all people, and to respect the dignity of every human being. The National Association of Episcopal Schools recently noted,

Our tradition is one of graciousness, generosity, and humility—we do not possess all of the answers, and we are eager to learn from each other. One of the best vehicles

for enhancing that learning is the intentional cultivation of a diverse community, one that is welcomed into the total life of the school. A sense of belonging is essential to a climate of learning, and serves as the optimal mode of preparation for our students’ futures.

We are currently reviewing our admissions process to ensure our message and commitment to kindness and inclusion is understood and known throughout Kansas City. We want to affirm, as we sing in chapel, that all are welcome at St. Paul’s.

The 2020-2021 school year also marked the end of Amy Holewinski’s exemplary service to St. Paul’s as our board chair.

Under Amy’s leadership, the school has made remarkable progress while maintaining the heart of the St. Paul’s experience. We are grateful to Amy and her family for their incredible commitment to St. Paul’s, and I am personally thankful for Amy’s support, wisdom, and unmatched dedication.

We are thrilled to welcome Karen Seitter as the next president of our board. Karen and her husband Scott are parents of a recent alumnus and longtime supporters of both the school and church. Over the years, Karen has proven a tireless volunteer and unwavering champion of our school, and we look forward to her leadership as we pursue our strategic goals and ready for the challenges ahead.

KEEPING ST. PAUL’S HEALTHY & SAFE

Like all schools, the St. Paul's Episcopal Day School community faced unprecedented challenges in 20202021. We are so proud of the creativity and resilience our students and teachers displayed daily in the classrooms and while learning at home. This unusual time provided the opportunity to grow in our humanity while focusing on optimism, a growth mindset, and love for our neighbors.

During the summer of 2020, St. Paul’s committed to making sure learning could happen simultaneously at home and in person throughout the school year. We explored a range of school day protocols while developing a plan to ensure the health and safety of faculty, staff, and students. We are immensely proud of this community for shifting and adapting to meet the unique needs surrounding COVID. Whether it was wearing masks to protect each other or missing out on beloved school traditions, our community worked together to ensure St. Paul’s learning continued despite the difficult circumstances.

Following advice from national and local health officials, we made many changes to our facilities and school procedures including: •

Installed large tents to encourage outdoor learning throughout the year Expanded our 1:1 technology program to include all students in Kindergarten and up Installed Synexis air filtration system throughout the school Enhanced cleaning procedures in high-touch locations Added hand-washing stations throughout the building Offered e-learning options for families with a COVID-related need Extended student drop-off and pick-up times Parents and visitors were not allowed to enter the building Masks required for all students, staff, and faculty Created age-specific student cohorts to limit exposure

OUR VISION FOR OUTDOOR PLAY ST. PAUL’S STUDENTS ENJOY THE FIRST OF OUR TRANSFORMED PLAY SPACES

Research shows that dedicated daily time for outdoor play promotes students’ overall health, aids in social emotional development, and increases academic focus in the classroom. With community support, we are updating our outdoor spaces to provide more opportunities to play, create, and explore.

Through individual gifts, pledges, and Fund-A-Vision donations at our past two auctions, we have raised $727,525 toward our playground transformations. While the school had to pause and tackle the challenges of safely returning to campus last fall, we never lost the vision for new outdoor play spaces.

In September 2021, we completed work on our West Playground, and students are enjoying the new equipment, colorful surfaces, and cheerful landscaping.

Our work is not yet done! We are finalizing plans on our South Playground and construction will begin in May 2022. Fundraising efforts continue as we purchase new equipment for this reimagined play space.

Matt and Alex (Peak) Turley met in sixth grade, when Matt joined St. Paul’s. The couple became fast friends during middle school and eventually started dating in eighth grade — January 8, 1999, to be exact. They have been inseparable ever since. In 2008, Matt and Alex got married (at St. Paul’s church, of course).

Fast forward to the present — they live in Kansas City, Mo., and have two children: Olive (a first-grader at St. Paul’s) and Miles (1 year old).

Matt: I started at St. Paul’s in middle school and was on a steep learning curve from day one. St. Paul’s gave me a firm

Alex: Of everything I learned at St. Paul’s, three of the most valuable skills I gained are the ability to think critically, to know how to study and to problem solve. It wasn’t until I reached college that I realized that not everyone has the educational foundation that taught them how to do those three things.

Alex: I was a lifer at St. Paul’s, so it’s difficult for me to identify one specific experience.

The friendships, the engaging teachers, the academic rigor and the field trips have all been extremely influential for me.

What advice would you give your middle school self?

Matt: These three years are harder on your parents than they are for you.

Lighten up. And buy Google stock. “Ask Jeeves” doesn’t make it.

Alex: The middle school phase is fleeting.

And universally everyone, at some point or another, is awkward and miserable during these three years.

How are you living the values taught at St. Paul’s? What lessons do you draw from in your personal or professional life?

Matt: My teachers at St. Paul’s taught me the importance of having strong ethical standards and always acting with integrity. Those two values have served me well throughout my personal life and professional career.

Alex: St. Paul’s always had a strong connection with its community. At a young age, I remember learning the importance of supporting your neighbors and helping those in need.

Why did you choose St. Paul’s for Olive, and for your family now?

Matt & Alex: We wanted Olive to have a parochial education, with a strong focus on STEAM. We have both benefited not

only from the educations we received at St. Paul’s, but also the relationships and opportunities we’ve been met with. When we were looking at schools for Olive, St. Paul’s simply made the most sense. It checked all the boxes for us, and then some.

How do you think St. Paul’s is uniquely suited to helping students today prepare for the future?

Matt: The St. Paul’s experience requires students to think critically, while also understanding how their decisions affect the whole community.

Alex: I think St. Paul’s teaches students how to be compassionate, confident, principled leaders who are engaged with their communities.

PARENTS’ GUILD ST. PAUL’S PARENTS SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY Our dedicated team of parents works hard every year to support our teachers and students through a variety of projects. Parents’ Guild members serve as room parents, auction volunteers, service learning coordinators, fundraisers, and much more. These efforts are vital to the St. Paul’s mission, and we are so grateful for these parents’ volunteer time and financial support.

In particular this past year, the Parents’ Guild tackled big challenges around our auction Let the Games Begin due to health and safety precautions in the spring. Parents’ Guild leaders, Sarah Murray and Katie Trenkle, and supporting St. Paul’s staff successfully crafted this traditionally in-person event into a funfilled evening for St. Paul’s families to enjoy at home.

Thank you to those who supported the school through the book fair, auction, and other Parents’ Guild events. In addition to more than $99,000 that Parents’ Guild provided to our outdoor play Fund-AVision project, the Parents Guild made gifts to the school totaling $100,000.

These gifts supported our students through a commitment to the school’s general operating budget, increasing the Good Samaritan Fund, and an additional gift to jumpstart our renovation fund for our south playground.

Our students and faculty found strength in community, and we are grateful to our supporters for ensuring St. Paul’s remains a steady foundation for many years to come.

With support from our extended St. Paul’s community, we continually find the strength to fulfill our mission of developing confident learners, ethical leaders, and compassionate, engaged citizens. The Annual Fund allows us to meet the school’s most important priorities, and it bridges the gap that tuition alone cannot cover.

A FOND FAREWELL Julie Willets’ Accomplishments at St. Paul's: Won Time Warner Cable National Crystal Apple Awards 3 years in row



 Worked with Frances Wood on integrated Social Studies/Computer projects from 1998-2001  Received a Gates family grant to attend a Richard Bryne technology summer camp in Maine After 23 years teaching and working at St. Paul’s, we are congratulating and thanking Mrs. Julie Willets as she begins her well-earned retirement.

Julie became a part of the St. Paul’s community in 1997 as our Technology Coordinator and Computer Teacher.

Through her many years at St. Paul’s, Julie joyfully assisted students and staff with tech issues, helping them solve problems and move forward confidently. In addition, she helped the school navigate a range of sweeping technology changes as digital learning tools transformed over the past few decades. Julie also served as a Student Counsel Advisor, encouraging

students to become leaders who serve their peers as well as the community.

As the school’s bi-annual food drive coordinator, Julie helped move countless food items from the school to the Church pantry over the years.

Julie has retired after 45 years of teaching, but she looks forward to spoiling her grandchildren and serving as onsite technical support for her husband, Bill.

The St. Paul’s community is a better place because of Julie, and we are grateful for her sparkling sense of humor, encouragement, and dedication. We wish her a happy and fulfilling retirement!
