Education

SaintPaul’sSchoolhasannouncedtheappointmentofMr.LukeBarwickas thenewacademicinterventionist. HeisagraduateofHuntingdonCollege, St.JosephSeminaryCollege,andtheLasallianButtimerInstitute.Healso earnedanMBAfromtheUniversityofNewOrleans. Barwickhasbeena facultymemberatSaintPaul'sSchoolfor24yearsduringwhichhehas servedinvariousroles:religiondepartmentchair,assistantbasketball coach,headgolfcoach,andjunior-levelmoderator.Additionally,hewasthe 2020winneroftheCrouzetAward,anawardrecognizingexcellencein teachingandservicetotheSaintPaul’sSchoolcommunity.

Inhisnewroleasacademicinterventionist,Barwickwillbeworkingaspartoftheadministrative teamtosupportstudentswiththeiracademicendeavors.

Mr.LeePierre,newlyappointedPrincipalofSaintPaul’sSchoolnoted,“MuchlikeLuke’srole model,thelateCoachGeneBennettwithwhomheworkedalongsideduringBennett’s40-plus yeartenureasabasketballcoachandteacheratSaintPaul’s,Lukeisaconsummateeducator. He emulatesthefinestqualitiesofCoachBennett--humility,gentleness,andzeal. Iknowhewill continuetobeanassettotheschoolcommunityinthisnewrole.”

AthleticDirectorSamFrancishasannouncedtheselectionofKristian GibbeasheadcoachoftheWolvesbaseballprogramnextyear.Gibbewill replaceMickNunez’88whowillserveasDeanofStudentsforthe2024-25 academicyear.

Gibbe,aSaintPaul’sClassof2000alum,hasservedasateacherandcoachat theschoolsince2006. Inadditiontohisroleasafacultymemberofthe HealthandPhysicalEducationdepartmentforthelast18years,hehasalso coachedbaseballandfootballduringhistenureattheschool.Additionally,

Atthestartofthe2023-2024academicyear,SaintPaul’s introduced“TheCrouzetCup,”asupplementtothestandingPack Timemodel.PackTimeisagatheringof20studentsacrossall gradelevelsthatmeetsonceeverytwoweeksandisfacilitatedbya facultymember.It’ssimilartotheconceptof“homerooms”in otherschools.

Administration,teachers,andstudentsnoticedthecurrentPack Timestructurecouldusearevitalization.Thus,the"CrouzetCup" (namedafterBrotherCharlesCrouzet,FSC,amemberofthe foundingbrothersofSaintPaul'sSchool)wasborn.Packsare groupedintolargerhousesnamedaftersignificantLasallianSaints likeSaintBenildeRomancon,SaintSolomonLeclerc,Saint Mutien-MarieWiaux,SaintJaimeHilarioBarbal,theMartyrsof Turon,andSaintMiguelFebresCordero.AteachPackgathering, Packscompeteinaseriesofgamesthatearnpointstowardthe year-longracetowardtheCrouzetCup.Thegamesinclude intellectualchallengeslikeacademicquizzesorriddles.Other competitionsaremorephysicalsuchastug-of-war,relayrace,or freethrowshootouts.

Thechangeofpacefrompreviousyearshasseenstudentsmuch moreengagedwiththeactivitiesandbuildingcamaraderieamong Packgroups.Welookforwardtocrowningthisyear'svictorina fewweeksandbuildinguponthisyear'ssuccessforyearstocome.

JuniorandseniorPLTWstudentsrecentlyexperiencedadayatLSU'sHealthandSciencesCenter alongsidesecond-yearmedicalstudents.Theprogramprovidedhands-onexposuretovarious medicalskills,includingperformingheartultrasounds,diagnosingheartandlungdefects,excising tumors,administeringCPR,managinguncontrolledbleeding,andconductingdiagnosticpatient interviews.Thestudentsalsohadtheopportunitytoexaminehumanspecimens,suchasskeletal remains,kidneys,hearts,lungs,andspinalcords.WhiletheseskillsalignwithourPLTW curriculum,theuniqueaspectofthisdayinvolvedpracticingonmannequinsthatsimulated real-worldconditions,completewithheartbeats,breathingsounds,speechcapabilities,andeye movements.Thoseselectedforthisdistinctiveexperienceshouldbeproudoftheirachievement,as theapplicationprocessrequiredademonstrationoftheirdedicationtoacademicexcellence.

TheSaintPaul’sWolves(Minions)broughthomethe2024 ChallengeCup!TheSSADoves(LittleRedRidingHood) wereformidableopponentsinthevolleyballgame,butthe Wolvesearnedthe“W”duringtheremainingchallenge gameswhichincludedTicTacToe,TrashBall,PipeGame andtheMemoryGame.Welldone,WolfNation!Andgreat jobtothestudentcouncilsofbothschoolsforplanningafun afternoonoffriendlycompetition!

HabitatforHumanity

MembersoftheSaintPaul’sHabitatClubspentthelast SaturdayinMarchworkingonthebeginningstagesofa newhouseinperfectweatherconditions.Thecrew performedmultipletasks,suchascuttingandinstalling over30termiteshieldsandmeasuring,cutting,and installing6x6beams(15feetinlength)toformthe beginningofthefloor. Anyonecanplayasport,butittakesaskilledathletetobegoodatasport andaneliteathletetoplayasportprofessionally.

Thisarticleaimstosettlethecentury-olddebateregardingsports difficulty.Thisisthemostcorrecttakeinthehistoryofthisargument.

Number10:Golf

Thismightbecontroversial,assomemayrankgolfhigher,butgolfisnotworthyof anythingabovethetenspot.

Theepitomeofgolfisswingmechanics,whichisoneofthehardestthingstomasterinall ofsports.Theplayermustbeabletosuccessfullystriketheballataconsistentrateovernearlyfour hoursofplay.Golfalsorequirestheplayertodealwithmanydifferenttypesofterrainsuchas water,sand,andtallgrass.

Theargumentagainstgolfisthatitrequireslittleathleticism.Overweightpeopleandolder individualscanstillbeverygoodatgolf.Thesportrequiresnorunning,whichiswhyit’soneof theeasiest.

Number9:CrossCountry

CrossCountryisnothardtocompetein.Itisaverysimpleconcept:runningfar.The reasonitcomesinattheninthspotisthatitrequiresactualathleticism,unlikecurling. Crosscountryrequiresstronglegs,knowledgeofpacing,andendurance.Itrequires therunnertodealwithdifferenttypesofterrain,andthecompetitorsareatthemercyofthe elements,beitrain,cold,orextremeheat.

Crosscountryisnothardtoplay,butitishardtobegoodat.“Tobecomeskilledatcross countryrequiresatremendousamountofworkanddedication,”saidSaintPaul’sjuniorAndrew James.

Whilecrosscountrymayrequirealotofhardworktomaster,thesamecanbesaidformost sports.Ontopofthis,crosscountryisaveryone-dimensionalsport,whichiswhyitcomesinat numbernine.

Number8:Tennis

Tennistakestheone-dimensionalaspectofendurancefromcrosscountryandadds coordinationandstrategy.Tennisalsorequirestheplayertostriketheballproperlytokeepitin play.

Whenplayingamatch,theplayerneedstomakesplit-seconddecisionsandchange directionsmultipletimesatjustonepoint.Theplayeralsoneedstodecidewheretoplacehisorher shottobestsetthemupforawin. Ina way,tennisisalmostlikechess.Thisisoneofthesport’smostoverlookedaspects. “The sportofpickleballprimarilyexistsbecausepeoplearen’tgoodenoughtoplaytennis,”saidSaint Paul’steacherNickGuarisco.

Despitethesefactors,sixmonthsoftennisfortwohoursadaywillcreateaprettydecentplayer, whichiswhyitcomesinatnumbereight.

Number7:Soccer

Soccerisdifficult,butextremelyone-dimensional.Thesportonlyinvolveskickingand running,buttherunningisverystrenuous.

Soccergamesonlyhaveabouttwosubsforeachteam,meaningthatmostplayerswho startthegamewillberunningupanddownthepitchfor90minutes.Asoccerplayerrunsan averageof6milespergame.

Handlingasoccerballisalsonoeasymeasure.Apasscancomeinprettyhot,andbeing abletocorraltheballandadvanceitforwardisimpressive.Beingabletovolleyaballoutof theairsuccessfullyalsorequiresextremefoot-eyecoordination,andshootinginitsentiretyis probablythemostchallengingfacetofthegame.

Number6:Lacrosse

Lacrosseiseasytopickupandplay,butperfectingitsnuancesmakesitthesixth hardestsporttoplay.Thesportinvolvesrunningupanddownafieldwhilesimultaneously throwingandcatchingaballwithasmallstick.

Addtothisplaysthatmustbememorizedandrunproperlytosucceed,andthesport becomesevenharder.Lacrossealsorequiresphysicalstrengthandathleticismtoriseabovethe rest.

Pickingupastickandlearningtothrowisnothard,whichisthemainargumentused againstlacrosse.Whilethismaybetrue,incorporatingalltheotherelementsofthegameand thentellingaplayertothrowandcatchcanbechallenging,especiallyforabeginner.

Lacrosseisthefirstsportonthelistthataddsaconstantfactorofpressureandother separateopponents,whichrequirestheplayertoaccountformanydifferentvariablesonthe field.Thisiswhylacrossecomesinatnumbersix.

Number5:Basketball

Basketballiswherethingsgetquitedifficult.Theprosmaymakejumpersandfree throwslookeasy,buttheyarenot.

Basketballincorporateshand-eyecoordinationintooneofthemostendurance-heavy sportstheworldhaseverseen.Theplayermustalsoputaballintoasmallhoopconsistently, whichisnoteasytodo.

“Toexcelinbasketball,youneedtofocusoneverydynamicofthegame.Thereis dribbling,passing,defense,andmostimportantly,shooting,”saidSaintPaul’sseniorSamuel Drez.

Basketballalsohasaheightfactor,whichmakesitharderforsmallerplayerstosucceed, especiallyattheprofessionallevel.

Manyconsiderthehardestpartofthegametomaster:consistentlyreleasingashotand achievingthesameresult.Avoidingfoulingisalsoadifficultfacetofthegametomaster,as basketballisfarandawaythegamewiththemostfoulscalled.

Basketballcomesinatnumberfivebecauseofalloftheseindividualvariablesthatthe playersmustaccountfor.
