What is your favorite memory of Saint Paul’s?

In 8th grade, we beat Mandeville in football. My buddy Skip Horack convinced me to jump the fence and rush the field when we won. Thank God once we hit the field the rest of the student body followed! It was so much fun!

What do you value most about your Saint Paul’s education and experience?

I have always credited Saint Paul's, and in particular, Brother Ray, for giving me a strong moral compass.

Education: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, University of West Florida. SGA President, UWF 1998.

Family: Married to Misty for 23 years. Daughters: Carson, who is a junior at the University of Alabama, and Millie, who is in 8th grade at SSA. Occupation: Educational Sales Consultant, Herbie J. Thorpe, LLC. Chief Operating Officer, Bandit 53 Seasoning.

Do you have any other family members currently attending or who have attended Saint Paul’s?

No, just me. God blessed us with two daughters. However, I’d like to encourage all alumni to support our alma mater and not just our brothers with legacies.

Who was your favorite or most impactful teacher?

I had many teachers who were very impactful in my life, but none more than Charlie Legendre. I am very grateful to Charlie for his mentorship both during and after high school.

What advice would you give to current students or young alumni?

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put tomatoes in a fruit salad. If you are open to your Lasallian education, you can gain both.

In what ways do you continue to be involved with Saint Paul’s at this phase of your life?

I have supported Saint Paul’s my entire adult life including special event participation, attending numerous sporting events, serving as a track and field coach and maintaining an active role in the Alumni Association. This year my business partner, Robert Alford ’94, and I had the pleasure to provide, cook and serve jambalaya to both the Saint Paul’s and Covington High School bands after their battle of the bands.

Student teams had a day and a half to learn new software and design a Fortnite game based on the eclipse. Please pray for the repose of the soul of Mr. Michael Navarre, Jr., former head coach of the Saint Paul’s Cross Country Wolves, who died peacefully on March 5, 2024 in Celebration, Florida where he had retired a few years ago.

Mike is survived by his wife, Linda, his brother, Patrick, his sister, Jean, his four sons, Michael III ‘88, Marc ‘88, Eric ‘93 and Brad ‘95, as well as his ten grandchildren.

The Navarre family was quite entrenched in Saint Paul’s athletics, and Coach Navarre added his own signature as a Cross Country Coach in the early 90’s through 2001.

During his 10 year tenure as head coach, he guided the team to four consecutive state championships and placed the Wolves on the map as one of the premier programs in the state. He truly left an indelible mark on those athletes entrusted to his care who remain indebted to their experience of discipline, determination, and brotherhood while under his tutelage.

To his family, friends, and former athletes, we extend our deepest sympathy.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

May they rest in peace! Amen!

Saint Paul’s School has announced the appointment of Mr. Luke Barwick as the new academic interventionist. He is a graduate of Huntingdon College, St. Joseph Seminary College, and the Lasallian Buttimer Institute. He also earned an MBA from the University of New Orleans. Barwick has been a faculty member at Saint Paul's School for 24 years during which he has served in various roles: religion department chair, assistant basketball coach, head golf coach, and junior-level moderator. Additionally, he was the 2020 winner of the Crouzet Award, an award recognizing excellence in teaching and service to the Saint Paul’s School community.

In his new role as academic interventionist, Barwick will be working as part of the administrative team to support students with their academic endeavors.

Mr. Lee Pierre, newly appointed Principal of Saint Paul’s School noted, “Much like Luke’s role model, the late Coach Gene Bennett with whom he worked alongside during Bennett’s 40-plus year tenure as a basketball coach and teacher at Saint Paul’s, Luke is a consummate educator. He emulates the finest qualities of Coach Bennett -- humility, gentleness, and zeal. I know he will continue to be an asset to the school community in this new role.”

Athletic Director Sam Francis has announced the selection of Kristian Gibbe as head coach of the Wolves baseball program next year. Gibbe will replace Mick Nunez ’88 who will serve as Dean of Students for the 2024-25 academic year.

Gibbe, a Saint Paul’s Class of 2000 alum, has served as a teacher and coach at the school since 2006. In addition to his role as a faculty member of the Health and Physical Education department for the last 18 years, he has also Mr. Kristian Gibbe coached baseball and football during his tenure at the school. Additionally, he has served as the strength and conditioning coach for the baseball, basketball, and lacrosse programs and as the head coach for the 8th grade football team the past five years.

As a student-athlete at Saint Paul’s School, Gibbe was a member of the 1999 State Championship baseball team, and twenty years later as an assistant coach, he helped the Wolves win the 2019 Baseball State Championship.

A Roaring Good Time at the Royal Gold Gala!

The dance floor under the sparkling chandelier and soft ceiling swag was the “bees knees” of the night as patrons danced to the tunes of Groovy 7. The Briggs Assembly Center was transformed into a beautiful speakeasy of the Roaring 20s for the inaugural Royal Gold Gala, the first event of its kind since Jazz and Roll in 2019. By all accounts, the event was a huge success as the entire community came together to support Saint Paul’s School through sponsorships, live and silent auctions, raffles, games, and fellowship.

Patrons dined on delectable dishes from the finest restaurants in the area including Pardo’s Restaurant, Gallagher’s Grill, Dakota Ristorante, Bonannos’s Fine Catering, Del Porto Restaurant, Marcello’s, Tchefuncte’s Restaurant, The Greystone, and many more!

Always a crowd favorite, the Marching Wolves kicked off the live auction, leading into a rousing battle for highly sought-after items: a signed Jayden Daniels’ LSU helmet, a George Rodrigue Blue Dog print, a one-of-a-kind Brad Budge live painting of Founders Oak tree, an exotic hunt in Oklahoma, a cabin in Pigeon Forge that sleeps 20, a dinner party at Pardo’s, and the crowd pleaser -- a wine and cheese social with Brother Ken! There was something for everyone in the silent auction. Thanks to the hundreds of local businesses, stores and establishments for supporting this inaugural event. Honor Roll Breakfasts The third quarter honor roll breakfasts for students were held at the end of March. As is custom for the third quarter, a few seniors were tasked with presenting a vocabulary lesson to their peers and parents in attendance. This year’s group, Gunnar Gavel, Peyton Kilgore, Kaiden Klebba, and Jacob Strecker, did not disappoint. After the honor roll students were recognized and congratulated for their diligent work and excellent grades, Peyton kicked off the lesson with the word Meliora (a Latin adjective meaning better, or a noun meaning better things, always better, or for the pursuit of the better); Jacob elaborated on Lackadaisical (a Latin adjective meaning lacking enthusiasm or determination; apathetic or listless); Gunnar expounded on Salience (a Latin noun meaning the quality of being particularly noticeable or important); and Kaiden closed with Doctrinaire (a French noun meaning a stubborn person of arbitrary or arrogant opinions). They tied their words beautifully into real-world lessons for their peers and even provided some humor during their presentation.

Mother-Son Dinners The annual Mother-Son Dinner took a bit of a different form this year. The success of previous years' events led to a splitting into two separate events. On Tuesday, March 5th, the 10th-12th grade students and moms gathered for their dinner. On Thursday, March 7th, the 8th and 9thh grade students and moms gathered for their dinner. The evening began with a prayer service that transitioned to the serving of dinner. After dinner, all were treated to a wonderful rendition of the beloved book Love You Forever written by Robert Munsch.

Seniors Austin Asher, Parker Emery, Conlan Enk, Gunnar Gavel, Aiden Hayes, Peyton Kilgore, Preston Olivier, Jacob Strecker, Max Toomey, and Cooper Winchester reflected with the 10th-12th grade students on the many wonderful qualities of moms and how those qualities are evident in each of their moms. Seniors Parker Emery and Jake Theriot treated the 8th and 9th grade students to an inspiring reflection on the relationship of mothers and sons.

CORE Pack Activities The students and mentors in Saint Paul’s CORE Pack have had a busy month of fun activities.

First, the CORE Pack joined with the students and mentors of the Hannan Grace program for the inaugural Wolf Toss Corn Hole Tournament in Hunter Stadium. It was a great day of fellowship, fun, and friendly competition. Congratulations to the Wolves on their victory!

Additionally, the CORE Pack participated in Inclusion Night at the Heap on March 25th.

This event celebrates Saint Paul's core value of inclusive community. The CORE Pack hosted a tailgate before the varsity baseball game against Slidell High School. The event was open to current CORE Pack students, future CORE Pack students, CORE Pack alumni, CORE Pack mentors and their families. Before the game, the students and their mentors joined the team for the prayer and National Anthem and then went to watch the game from the Left Field Lounge. The purpose of the night was to enjoy the brotherhood while supporting the baseball team. It was a great night of inclusion at the Heap! We are better together!

Crouzet Cup At the start of the 2023-2024 academic year, Saint Paul’s introduced “The Crouzet Cup,” a supplement to the standing Pack Time model. Pack Time is a gathering of 20 students across all grade levels that meets once every two weeks and is facilitated by a faculty member. It’s similar to the concept of “home rooms” in other schools.

Administration, teachers, and students noticed the current Pack Time structure could use a revitalization. Thus, the "Crouzet Cup" (named after Brother Charles Crouzet, FSC, a member of the founding brothers of Saint Paul's School) was born. Packs are grouped into larger houses named after significant Lasallian Saints like Saint Benilde Romancon, Saint Solomon Leclerc, Saint Mutien-Marie Wiaux, Saint Jaime Hilario Barbal, the Martyrs of Turon, and Saint Miguel Febres Cordero. At each Pack gathering, Packs compete in a series of games that earn points toward the year-long race toward the Crouzet Cup. The games include intellectual challenges like academic quizzes or riddles. Other competitions are more physical such as tug-of-war, relay race, or free throw shootouts.

The change of pace from previous years has seen students much more engaged with the activities and building camaraderie among Pack groups. We look forward to crowning this year's victor in a few weeks and building upon this year's success for years to come.

GOLF WOLVES

Congratulations to the Golf Team who placed second in the recent Northshore League match at Pinewood Country Club and to Rylan Hess who had the lowest score of the match with a 35.

Freshmen

LACROSSE WOLVES The Lacrosse Wolves hosted Catholic for a Saturday showcase of games on March 23rd. The Varsity and JV teams fell to Catholic in the early games at Hunter Stadium. The Freshman team remained unbeaten with a 23-0 win. Eight different Wolves scored goals in the win.

RUGBY WOLVES The Rugby Wolves played in their first league match in two years and beat the Warren Easton Eagles 21 to 7 at Farnet Field. Tries were scored by Hunter Bentley and Bryce Loisel.

Connor O’Quin scored 11 points in penalty kicks and extra points. For the second straight week Hunter Bentley was named “Man of the Match” by the opposition. The Wolves next league game will be against Br. Martin at Farnet Field on April 6, 2024 at 12:00 PM. Page 16

Varsity

Bowling Wolves On Tuesday, March 12th, the Bowling Wolves were narrowly defeated by Hammond by a score of 1081 to 1083. The top three-point scorers were junior Caleb Tardo (with the highest round score of 247), sophomore Mason Bazajou, and senior captain Kaiden Klebba.

The Wolves rebounded on their final regular season match on Wednesday, March 13th, with a 1057-1031 victory over Albany. The high-bowler award for this match went to sophomore Aiden Maestri, who bowled a 236 in round 3.

Kaiden Klebba and Caleb Tardo both qualified for the state championship singles tournament in April, with season averages of 186 and 189, respectively. Jackson Picone qualified as an alternate with his season average of 184. Good luck to the Bowling Wolves in the postseason!

Basketball Wolves The varsity basketball team concluded its season with a record of 24-11 and several recognitions, including a hallmark for Coach Stephen Dale who celebrated his 200th career victory at Saint Paul’s. In his eight seasons as head coach, the Wolves are 200-76. Congrats to Coach Dale and the entire coaching staff! Congratulations also to Michael Sarver who became the 28th player in school history to score over 1,000 points.

St. Joseph Altar Saint Paul’s School students recognized the Feast of Saint Joseph by visiting a St. Joseph altar established in the theater lobby by Mrs. Paula Powell and Ms. Tiffany Thieme, grandmother and mother of current students Brennan and Trey Higgins.

Mrs. Powell designed the altar and shared with the students her devotion to Saint Joseph and encouraged them to strive to attain Saint Joseph’s qualities, such as hard work and diligence. We are grateful to Mrs. Powell and Ms. Thieme for bringing this gift to the students and faculty of Saint Paul’s School. St. Joseph, pray for us.

Wolves on the Road Junior & Senior PLTW Students Visit LSU’s Health & Sciences Center

Junior and senior PLTW students recently experienced a day at LSU's Health and Sciences Center alongside second-year medical students. The program provided hands-on exposure to various medical skills, including performing heart ultrasounds, diagnosing heart and lung defects, excising tumors, administering CPR, managing uncontrolled bleeding, and conducting diagnostic patient interviews. The students also had the opportunity to examine human specimens, such as skeletal remains, kidneys, hearts, lungs, and spinal cords. While these skills align with our PLTW curriculum, the unique aspect of this day involved practicing on mannequins that simulated real-world conditions, complete with heartbeats, breathing sounds, speech capabilities, and eye movements. Those selected for this distinctive experience should be proud of their achievement, as the application process required a demonstration of their dedication to academic excellence.

Saint Paul’s HOSA Chapter Honored at State Leadership Conf.

High school students across Louisiana gather annually for the HOSA State Leadership Conference. Louisiana HOSA students apply skills from their CTE courses, enhancing leadership and networking amidst over 1,700 attendees. This spring event features competitive and recognition events, state executive council elections, scholarships, networking, guest speakers, and recreational activities. The top five event participants receive awards with the top three advancing to the International Leadership Conference. Saint Paul’s School HOSA program has three students eligible to compete in the ILC: Theodore Hadskey ‘26, Aryan Kumar ‘25, and William Coles ‘24

Student Council - Challenge 2024 Wolf Nation with a Win! The Saint Paul’s Wolves (Minions) brought home the 2024 Challenge Cup! The SSA Doves (Little Red Riding Hood) were formidable opponents in the volleyball game, but the Wolves earned the “W” during the remaining challenge games which included Tic Tac Toe, Trash Ball, Pipe Game and the Memory Game. Well done, Wolf Nation! And great job to the student councils of both schools for planning a fun afternoon of friendly competition!

Members of the Saint Paul’s Habitat Club spent the last Saturday in March working on the beginning stages of a new house in perfect weather conditions. The crew performed multiple tasks, such as cutting and installing over 30 termite shields and measuring, cutting, and installing 6 x 6 beams (15 feet in length) to form the beginning of the floor. Well done, Habitat Wolves!

The next work day is April 20th.

The Paper Wolf Featured Article The Hardest Sport to Play Which sport is the most difficult to play and why? It is a debate as old as time itself.

Anyone can play a sport, but it takes a skilled athlete to be good at a sport and an elite athlete to play a sport professionally.

Vincent Cruise ‘25 This article aims to settle the century-old debate regarding sports difficulty. This is the most correct take in the history of this argument.

Number 10: Golf

This might be controversial, as some may rank golf higher, but golf is not worthy of anything above the ten spot.

The epitome of golf is swing mechanics, which is one of the hardest things to master in all of sports. The player must be able to successfully strike the ball at a consistent rate over nearly four hours of play. Golf also requires the player to deal with many different types of terrain such as water, sand, and tall grass.

The argument against golf is that it requires little athleticism. Overweight people and older individuals can still be very good at golf. The sport requires no running, which is why it’s one of the easiest.

Number 9: Cross Country

Cross Country is not hard to compete in. It is a very simple concept: running far. The reason it comes in at the ninth spot is that it requires actual athleticism, unlike curling.

Cross country requires strong legs, knowledge of pacing, and endurance. It requires the runner to deal with different types of terrain, and the competitors are at the mercy of the elements, be it rain, cold, or extreme heat.

Cross country is not hard to play, but it is hard to be good at. “To become skilled at cross country requires a tremendous amount of work and dedication,” said Saint Paul’s junior Andrew James.

While cross country may require a lot of hard work to master, the same can be said for most sports. On top of this, cross country is a very one-dimensional sport, which is why it comes in at number nine.

Number 8: Tennis

Tennis takes the one-dimensional aspect of endurance from cross country and adds coordination and strategy. Tennis also requires the player to strike the ball properly to keep it in play.

When playing a match, the player needs to make split-second decisions and change directions multiple times at just one point. The player also needs to decide where to place his or her shot to best set them up for a win.

In a way, tennis is almost like chess. This is one of the sport’s most overlooked aspects.

“The sport of pickleball primarily exists because people aren’t good enough to play tennis,” said Saint Paul’s teacher Nick Guarisco.

Despite these factors, six months of tennis for two hours a day will create a pretty decent player, which is why it comes in at number eight.

Number 7: Soccer

Soccer is difficult, but extremely one-dimensional. The sport only involves kicking and running, but the running is very strenuous.

Soccer games only have about two subs for each team, meaning that most players who start the game will be running up and down the pitch for 90 minutes. A soccer player runs an average of 6 miles per game.

Handling a soccer ball is also no easy measure. A pass can come in pretty hot, and being able to corral the ball and advance it forward is impressive. Being able to volley a ball out of the air successfully also requires extreme foot-eye coordination, and shooting in its entirety is probably the most challenging facet of the game.

Number 6: Lacrosse

Lacrosse is easy to pick up and play, but perfecting its nuances makes it the sixth hardest sport to play. The sport involves running up and down a field while simultaneously throwing and catching a ball with a small stick.

Add to this plays that must be memorized and run properly to succeed, and the sport becomes even harder. Lacrosse also requires physical strength and athleticism to rise above the rest.

Picking up a stick and learning to throw is not hard, which is the main argument used against lacrosse. While this may be true, incorporating all the other elements of the game and then telling a player to throw and catch can be challenging, especially for a beginner.

Lacrosse is the first sport on the list that adds a constant factor of pressure and other separate opponents, which requires the player to account for many different variables on the field. This is why lacrosse comes in at number six.

Number 5: Basketball

Basketball is where things get quite difficult. The pros may make jumpers and free throws look easy, but they are not.

Basketball incorporates hand-eye coordination into one of the most endurance-heavy sports the world has ever seen. The player must also put a ball into a small hoop consistently, which is not easy to do.

“To excel in basketball, you need to focus on every dynamic of the game. There is dribbling, passing, defense, and most importantly, shooting,” said Saint Paul’s senior Samuel Drez.

Basketball also has a height factor, which makes it harder for smaller players to succeed, especially at the professional level.

Many consider the hardest part of the game to master: consistently releasing a shot and achieving the same result. Avoiding fouling is also a difficult facet of the game to master, as basketball is far and away the game with the most fouls called.

Basketball comes in at number five because of all of these individual variables that the players must account for.
