GentlemenandmembersoftheSaintPaul’scommunity,
AsithasbeenrightatayearsinceBrotherRay’spassingandasafurthertributetohim,I chosetorecyclewordsfromtheApril’23installment.IntrueLasallianspirit,thosewhoknew himorevenofhimrealizethatthestudentsentrustedtohiscarewereprioritynumberone. Thosestudentseventuallybecomealumni,andhewasequallyasconcernedaboutthem,in particulartheirdesiretoremainconnectedwiththeir“home”intheSaintPaul’scommunity. ThereisnodoubtthatBrotherRaywouldhaveonceagainbeenoverjoyedwithwhat transpiredatthe13thAnnualCrawfishCook-OffandReunionWeekend.
OnFriday,April19,thestudentbodywastreatedtoaspecialassemblyhonoringtheClassof ‘74asmembersoftheConfraternityofGoldenJubilarianswhilealsowelcomingtheClassof 2024intotheAlumniAssociationbywayofanalumnipinning,aneventwhichnotonly recognizesourpastbutwhichalsoshowcasesourfuture.
Laterthateveningandthroughouttheweekend,severalreunionclassesgatheredinthename ofSaintPaul’sSchooltoreconnect,regale,andinsomeinstancesreintroduce. Wesincerely hopethatanenjoyableexperiencewashadbyallandthatwerealizehowexceptionally fortunatewearetobeapartofthePack.
AsfortheCook-OffonApril20,theeventwasclearlyahugesuccessbutmostimportantlyit wasabeaconoffraternity,fellowshipandfun. Manythanksforthesupportofthevolunteer corpsfromHopeHouse,ourstudents,faculty/staff,alumni,andfriends.Furthergratitudeis extendedtooureventsponsors,andfortheculinaryprowess,hardworkandspiritof competitionamongstourboilingteamswithfurthercoverageoftheeventonpage8.

WhatisyourfavoritememoryofSaintPaul’s?
IhavemanygreatmemoriesfrommyyearsatSaintPaul’s,buttwostandout most.ThefirstismyyearsspentplayingfootballfortheWolves.Allofthehard workduringsummercampsandtwo-a-daypracticesinstilledmuchneeded discipline,taughtthevalueofteamwork,andbuiltcharacterthathelpedmoldme intothepersonthatIamtoday.ButIhavetosaythebestmemoryofthoseyearsat SaintPaul’swasmeetinganddatingmyfuturewife.Wemetearlyinourfreshman yearattheSaintPaul’shomecomingparadeanddatedthroughouthighschool.By oursenioryear,weknewweweredestinedtobetogetherfortherestofourlives. Wemarriedafterourfreshmanyearincollege,andGodhasblessedusbeyond measure.DeirdreandIwillcelebrate49yearsofmarriagethisAugust.
Whowasyourfavoriteormostimpactfulteacher?
I’mcertainmymostimpactfulteacherwasCoachGeneBennett.Istruggled academicalllyduetoADD,whichbackthenwasjustconsideredlazyandBAD. CoachtutoredmeandhelpedmegetthroughSaintPaul’srigorouscollege preparatorycurriculum.Onasidenote,mylanguageartsteacher,Mrs.LaCour, wouldbeamazedtoknowthatdespitemylackofenthusiasmandreluctancefor readinganyassignedliteraturebackintheday,Iamnowavoraciousreader.Ifonly Ihadn’tbeensoundisciplinedbackthen...
Whatadvicewouldyougivetocurrentstudentsoryoungalumni? Takeadvantageofeveryopportunityavailable.Getinvolvedbyplayingsports, joiningclubs,andattendingsocialactivities.WhenIwasastudent,wewere limitedtofootball,basketball,track,andgolf.Nowthereareliterallydozensof extracurricularclubsaswellasmanymoresports.SaintPaul’strulyhassomething foreveryone.Inaddition,Iwouldremindthemthattheyearsonthiscampuswill passquicklyandtheywillmoveon.Treatyourbrotherswithkindnessand compassionasJesuswouldhaveyoudo.Youmayormaynoteverseethemagain, butyouwillwanttoleavethemwithgoodmemoriesofyourinteractionsbecause peoplewillalwaysrememberthewayyoumadethemfeel.
InwhatwaysdoyoucontinuetobeinvolvedwithSaintPaul’satthisphase ofyourlife?
Iloveattendingallsportingevents,especiallywhenyoungerfamilymembersare onthefield.IalsoenjoytheSPS/SSAalumnigatheringattheTapRoomtheday afterChristmasandtheannualCrawfishCook-Off.NowthatI’mretired,Ihope togetinvolvedwiththeGrayWolvesandenjoysomefellowshipwithotherretired alum.
Whydoyoucontinuetosupportthemissionoftheschool?
IcontinuetosupporttheSaintPaul’smissionoutofgratitudefortheexperiencesandbenefitsI’veenjoyedasa resultofmyeducationaswellatthoseofmysonsandgrandson.Itrulywishthateveryyoungmanwouldhave theopportunitytoattendthiswonderfulschool.WhileIdidnothavetheprivilegeofknowingBrotherRay whenIwasastudent,ImethimandcametovaluehiscontributionstoSaintPaul’sanditsmissionwhenmy sonsattendedinthe90’s.Hewasanincrediblygiftededucator,leader,androlemodelforeveryonehemet,a truemanofGod.IamprayerfulthathisspiritwillcontinuetoguideSaintPaul’sleadership,facultyandstaff.
OnTuesday,April2,membersof theoutstanding1999and2019 StateChampionshipbaseball teamsreturnedhometobe honoredandtoenjoycatching the2024Wolvesinaction.
Unfortunately,theactualgame wasrainedout,yetitdidnot deterseveralWolvesfromreliving theglorydaysandtellingafew talltales.Manythankstothe coachesandplayersofthose outstandingteamsinattendance aswellastothebaseballprogram forhostingthealumni.

TheSaintPaul’sSchoolStudentCouncilorganizedtwoextremelysuccessfulBloodDrivesthisschool yearinsupportofthelocalTheBloodCenter. Thedonationscollecteddirectlyhelpthoseinthe communitywhoareinneedofbloodtransfusions.Students,staff,parents,andcommunitymemberswho participatedinthemostrecentspringdrivedonatedatotalof51unitsofblood. Combinedwiththefall blooddrive,theSaintPaul’sSchoolcommunityhasdonatedatotalof112wholebloodunitsand6 doubleredunitsthisschoolyear.Eachpintofbloodwillaidthreepeopleinthecommunity.Becauseof theStudentCouncil’sactiveparticipationinorganizingthetwoblooddrives,theorganizationiseligible toreceivescholarshipmoneyaspartoftheBloodCenter’sHighSchoolHeroesProgram.Thedollar amountisbasedontheamountofbloodcollected. Earlyintheweek,thestudentcouncilhostedaleadershipbreakfasthonoringstudentswhowere nominatedbytheircoachesandmoderatorsasoutstandingrepresentativesoftheirindividualclub,team, ororganization.StudentleadersenjoyedaChick-fil-Abreakfastastheylistenedtotheimpactfulwords oflongtimeeducatorMr.MontyFontenot,aClassof1984alumandformerSaintPaul’steacherand coach.Speakingonthetopicofservantleadership,Mr.Fontenotencouragedtheboysto“walkin humility,”oftenreferencingBro.Rayastheepitomeofaservantleader.
Attheendoftheweek,theStudentCouncilpresentedtheannualYear-in-Reviewandannouncedthe electionresults,introducingthenewStudentCouncilExecutiveBoardduringthespecialassembly. HonoringitscommitmenttotheLasallianCorePrincipleofConcernforthe PoorandSocialJustice,SaintPaul’sSchoolrecentlycollaboratedwithfiveWest St.TammanyArchdiocesanschoolsfortheannualStufftheBuscampaigntohelp theNorthshoreFoodBankprovidefoodtostrugglingfamiliesinthecommunity. Theteameffortintheannual“StufftheBus”campaignresultedin9300pounds offoodbeingdonatedtothefoodbank’sSummerStockprogramwhich supplementsthelossofschoolmealsforkidsandprovidesallschool-agedFood Bankparticipantswiththeirownbagofnutritious,kid-friendlyitemseachvisit duringthesummer.InadditiontoSaintPaul’s,otherparticipatingschools include:MaryQueenofPeace,ArchbishopHannan,SaintPeter,Saint Scholastica,andOurLadyoftheLake. Eachschoolwastaskedwithcollectinga specificpantryitem;SaintPaul’sstudentsdonatedaplethoraofpeanutbutter. Theschoolshavejoinedforcesforthepasttenyearstohelpfighthungerinthe localcommunity.
TheBillEvansJazzFestival,presentedeveryApril,includesfourdaysofconcertsfeaturinganationally knownguestartistwiththeSoutheasternFacultyJazzQuartetandUniversityJazzEnsemble.The festivalalsopresentstheLouisianaAssociationforJazzEducationStateJazzFestival,hostingover40jazz ensemblesfromthroughouttheregionrangingfromjuniorhightouniversitylevel,makingitoneofthe largestcollegiatejazzfestivalsontheGulfCoast.
TheSaintPaul’sJazzandComboBandswererecognizedatthefestivalreceivingbothexcellentand superiorratingsfortheirperformances.

At the end of March, the Key Club helped Mr. Richards clean the Mile Branch area at 29th Avenue. This is a part of an ongoing clean up project of Mile Branch.

Atthestatetournamentin Monroe,Reeceadvancedtothe semifinals.Congratulationsto thewholeteamandCoach BrotherKenonanoutstanding season.
Kaden Romig was recognized nationally by USA Gymnastics as an Academic All-American. Earlier in the month, Kaden competed in the LHSAA State Gymnastics meet and secured a runner-up finish in the all-around competition. In addition to his all-around result, Kaden finished first place in the floor exercise, second place in the parallel bars, second place in high bar, third place in rings, and third place in pommel horse.
