Jay Reesor knows what it’s like to make mistakes.

He also knows that he’s been forgiven for a few in his lifetime.

And considering it took place on Thanksgiving, he’s willing to forgive and forget the 200 or

so people who passersby say trespassed onto his north Markham farm’s pumpkin patch to take some snapshots… and some pumpkins.

“I have made mistakes and I have been forgiven,” said the owner of Reesors, which also has a store in Stouffville. “In this situation, some people made mistakes, but I think some good can come of something that was not so

good.”

Myles O’Brien, Green, Markham-Stouffville 1. The Greens propose economic policies that will help create more and better jobs for Canadians. What makes our approach different is the shift toward sustainability, both financially and environmentally. This means taxing things we want to discourage, like pollution and waste, and spending on things we want to encourage, like efficient homes and infrastructure, youth employment and small business. Green policies aim to remove the roots of economic weakness and disparity, to let all Canadians prosper from their work.

2. The Greens recognize Canada is shaped by immigration. Like most Canadians, we value diversity and goodwill and strive in our policies to extend these values to all groups, including refugees. Greens will welcome new Canadians by: removing barriers to meaningful and appropriate employment; supporting their integration needs, and reuniting families faster. The Greens’ push for collaboration between parties and governments will help remove the politics and reveal the humanity in these issues.

3. My experience working for a municipal government and with various grassroots organizations would be valuable in developing informed, realistic policy and in opening channels for communication and collaboration.

I am known as a team player, a consensus builder and a good listener. We need more of these attributes in Ottawa.

4. The Green Party is appealing because it has a vision: it sees Canadians living sustainably, which means every generation can expect the health and prosperity of the last, because proper foundations have been laid. The Greens stand alone in offering a true 21st-century vision that transcends old-fashioned ideologies. And despite being named after only one, the Green Party is remarkably multi-coloured.

5. Two people come to mind – Neil Young and Pope

Francis. I respect both these men for their fearlessness, for their willingness to follow their convictions in the face of adversity and controversy. Despite their fame, they each convey a humility that suggests an authenticity of spirit and a faith in the common good.

6. Most people I speak to, regardless of their particular contexts, are tired of being disrespected by their own government. They are worried about the state of democracy in Canada. They fear that our ability to address key issues – social, economic, or environmental – is being compromised by the very institution with the power and responsibility to do so.

Paul Calandra, Conservative, Markham-Stouffville 1. The Conservative Party of Canada under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper will continue its focus on low taxes, balanced budgets and job creation benefiting all Canadians. The opposition parties are proposing risky schemes including substantial business, payroll and income tax increases and billions in deficit spending. This election is a choice between the Liberal and NDP plans for risky change and the Conservative record of proven leadership.

2. Canada has one of the most generous immigration systems in the world.

Under our Conservative government, we have welcomed 20 per cent more immigrants per year on average than previous Liberal governments. The Conservative government has focused on working with provinces to identify priority gaps in the labour force and selecting the most qualified immigrants to fill those positions. Regarding the current refugee crisis, our government will continue to follow a balanced, compassionate approach while safeguarding Canadians’ security. Prime Minister Harper is addressing the current Syrian crisis with a three-pronged plan including military action against ISIS, providing record levels of humanitarian aid and increased refugee resettlement.

3. I ran for office because I knew I could make a difference in our community. By focusing the activities of my office on giving back to this community, we have accomplished great things in collaboration with all three levels of government and community partners.

Some of the important local projects I have undertaken include the creation of the Rouge National Urban Park and founding Hockey Night in Stouffville, which has raised more than $400,000 for Markham Stouffville Hospital.

I will continue to put this community first, leading with the experience I have gained over the past seven years.

4. Core Conservative principles of fiscal responsibility and free trade, a justice system that puts victims ahead of criminals, and strong national defence to protect Canadian sovereignty have always resonated with me.

5. Three people immediately come to mind. Former prime minister John Diefenbaker brought in the

Canadian Bill of Rights. Former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher implemented far-reaching economic reforms during a time of global uncertainty. Former Ontario premier Mike Harris led the province out of massive Liberal-style deficits with the “Common Sense Revolution,” which emphasized lower taxes and smaller government. Each were principled leaders who faced difficult challenges and overcame them. In many cases they were forced to make decisions which were not always popular, but served to be in the best interests of their people.

6. The integrity of the Canadian economy remains the most important issue facing Canada and MarkhamStouffville. Families know there are few tasks as important as ensuring the budget is balanced, debt is paid and investments are pragmatic and made for maximum return. These principles, which led Canada through the great recession, will provide the stability and growth needed as we continue to face economic uncertainty.

Dr. Jane Philpott, Liberal, Markham-Stouffville 1. This election is a choice between jobs, investment and growth, or cuts. The Liberal plan creates jobs by investing $60 billion in new funding for public infrastructure. This will increase productivity, attract businesses and help our environment. We’ll decrease taxes for the middle class. We’ll protect pension splitting for seniors. We’ll create the Canada Child Benefit: a simple, big, tax-free benefit supporting Canadian families who need it most. The Liberal Party plan helps all Canadians.

2. A Liberal government will make family reunification a core priority because when families can stay together, their integration and ability to work improves and all Canadians benefit. We will increase new applications for parents and grandparents. We will grant immediate permanent residency to spouses entering Canada. We will expand Canada’s intake of refugees to 25,000 through direct sponsorship and provide $200 million to expedite refugee processing — without reducing screening standards — and support settlement services.

3. I’ve been a family doctor at Markham Stouffville Hospital for 17 years, serving as chief of family medicine for six. I led the creation of the Health for All Family Health Team, providing care for 10,000 patients. I led the launch of the Markham Family Medicine Teaching Unit that has trained 46 new family physicians. If elected as MarkhamStouffville’s representative, I would listen to everyone and work with integrity.

4. The Liberal Party is grounded in fairness and equality of opportunity. Our ambitious plan creates jobs and builds an economy for everyone. Canadians are weary of leaders who provoke fear, whose vision for Canada is narrow and divisive. We believe a better Canada is possible.

5. One of my heroes is ex-prime minister Lester Pearson. His accomplishments include Medicare, the

Canada Pension Plan and our Maple Leaf flag. Pearson is best remembered for his role in the 1956 Suez crisis. The world was at the brink of war. Pearson brokered a resolution to turn a powder keg into a period of peace. His legacy gives me hope, showing what can be achieved by a thoughtful, fair and compassionate leader.

6. People in Markham-Stouffville are concerned about precarious employment and job security. We need investments in skills training, public infrastructure and innovation. We’ve announced investments in job training and apprenticeships. We are committed to maintaining a competitive tax environment for growing businesses. We have announced the largest new federal investment in infrastructure in Canadian history that will build this nation, provide great jobs and improve quality of life.

Gregory Hines, NDP, Markham - Stouffville 1. The NDP would create an innovation tax credit for businesses that invest in machinery, equipment and property used in innovation-boosting research and development. Cut the small business tax from 11 to 9 per cent to better support a sector of our economy that creates 78 per cent of all new private sector jobs. In partnership with small business, industry, NGOs and government, help 40,000 young Canadians get jobs, paid internship or co-op placements.

2. The NDP would bring in 10,000 Syrian refugees to Canada immediately and 9,000 a year for the next four years, a number based on what the UN has called for. We would also work with Turkey and other affected countries to remove bureaucratic obstacles to resettlement, bring as many people as possible to Canada by fast-tracking private sponsorship with no cap. We would do this with proper screening. This would put Canada back on the world stage as a peace loving country.

3. As the MP I would take the role of a servant in that I would serve Markham-Stoufville with integrity, honesty and respect, ensuring transparency by using social media to keep the people in my riding informed on what things I’ve accomplished on their behalf in parliament and what is still outstanding.

Have a quarterly or semi annual meeting to ensure everyone gets to speak about new or old concerns, needs and how I can continue to represent those needs accurately in parliament. Continue volunteering with faith groups taking part in food bank support, shelter support, programs for those with disabilities.

4. What attracted me was late NDP leader Jack Layton, the party’s principles and focus on the middle class.

5. That would be Tommy Douglas. He is known as the greatest Canadian because he had principle and was the most consistent, honest politician to date. He balanced the budget 17 consecutive times and was the pioneer of universal health care in Canada.

6. Economy, health care, environment and education.

Down to the wire in feisty Markham-Stouffville

H

ow did the conversations go around your Thanksgiving dinner table – assuming you celebrated the greatest non-sectarian pig-out this side of Festivus – Stouffville?

Was it Jane Philpott vs Paul Calandra and/or Justin Trudeau against Stephen Harper at the harvest table?

Or did the buns and gravy really start flying when you delved into John Gibbons’ managerial moves or someone’s dissertation on Munenori Kawasaki wildest dance steps?

(For the record, I like it when you bust out the handsover-the face number, Muni. I digress.)

When you weren’t inhaling turkey and pie, many of you were voting. I saw you lined up on the stairs of the Stouffville Arena much of the weekend.

Many voters said they waited 45 minutes, while others breezed in and out. Timing was everything. (It took me eight minutes Saturday night, just prior to puck drop at the Stouffville Spirit game going on in the same complex.)

Further to the record, I’ve voted for every mainstream party in this land while living in three Ontario communities during the past 40 years.

I’ve never belonged to a political party.

In the spirit of full disclosure, a family member did run, unsuccessfully, for the Conservatives in the Hamilton area.

And a cousin was an Ontario NDP MPP for 19 years, including three-plus years as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.

Makes sense then, sort of, that during this record-long election campaign, I’ve been called everything from the second coming of “that Harper” to “a biased socialist”. There’s no middle ground, apparently.

It’s gotta be a product of a tight race between the Liberals and Conservatives here in Markham-Stouffville and right across this great land.

We Canadians are suddenly passionate about something other than the Stanley Cup or who brews a better dark roast, Tim Hortons or McDonald’s.

Good on you.

It’s the kind of momentum the volunteers behind The Sun-Tribune’s Big 5-0 Project were after ahead of last year’s municipal election.

It’s the kind of race we predicted. Calandra and Philpott are both extremely well known and popular in certain circles.

The race is especially magnified here in Stouffville, home town to all four candidates in this new riding.

Traffic, even in burgeoning Stouffville, shouldn’t be an issue.

The victory parties – how can there be more than one? – for the big two candidates are four kilometres apart.

‘Deputy mayor’ toast of town

M

ayor Justin Altmann has etched a smile on the face of a nine-year-old WhitchurchStouffville boy that will never wear thin.

At a recent assembly of town staff and ratepayers, he presented Antwon Leadbetter of Cherry Street with a medal of honour and an accompanying plaque. He also named him deputy mayor-for-a-day.

The plaque’s inscription reads: “On behalf of the mayor, we extend congratulations to deputy-mayor Antwon Leadbetter on the occasion of his 9th birthday”. The tablet, beautifully framed, bears the signatures of Mayor Altmann and clerk Michele Kennedy.

The guest of honour, a Grade 4 student at Notre Dame Catholic Elementary School in Newmarket, has cerebral palsy, autism and other health issues that doctors describe as “complex”.

He was adopted by Mark and Roseann Leadbetter when only 15-months old.

The parents then resided in northern Richmond Hill, moving to the Vivian community seven years ago.

At the time of adoption, Mark and Roseann were aware of Antwon’s cerebral palsy.

“This wasn’t a concern,” says Roseann, “out of 300 clips, he was our choice and we’ve never been sorry.”

She describes Antwon as “a sweet, fun-loving, kindhearted, spiritual little boy”.

And Mayor Altmann agrees.

He’s a great kid,” he enthuses.

The two had the pleasure of meeting when leaders and members of the Ballantrae Scouts, including Antwon, visited Altmann’s office. The mayor took them on a tour of the municipal building and he

After learning of his upcoming birthday, the mayor invited Antwon and his parents to a meeting of council.

Prior to their arrival, Altmann purchased 16 birthday cards and distributed them among various town departments where all were appropriately signed.

All then joined in singing Happy Birthday.

‘Everyone he speaks with becomes an instant friend.’

But the tributes didn’t end there. In addition to the cards, Antwon received a town sweater, two caps, a mug and other treasures including the medal of honour and plaque.

“He was so excited when he saw my chain of office, I decided to give him one of his own,” the mayor said.

Roseann was choked with emotion in attempting to describe the event.

“It was pretty special,” she said, “difficult to put into words. Truth is, it was heartwarming that someone at our mayor’s level would go so far as to acknowledge Antwon’s distinctive day. We were very pleased.”

Antwon, she explains, loves to receive mail and while his birthday is now several weeks past, cards will still be appreciated. His address is 4984 Cherry St., Stouffville, Ont., L4A 7X4.

“He’s been a pure joy,” she says, “a God-send to us ever since his adoption. He’s sure to melt the hearts of anyone who has an opportunity to meet him.”

In spite of numerous health problems, his mother says he never complains.

“He’s more concerned about others than himself,” she notes. “Everyone he speaks with becomes an instant friend.”

In order to attend school, a bus picks him up every weekday at 7:30 a.m., and returns him home at 2:20 p.m. His favourite subjects are science and religion.

In sports, he participates in track and field. He also plays soccer with an allboys team in Stouffville and enjoys his association with the Ballantrae Scouts. His father drives him to weekly Boy Scout get-togethers at the Ballantrae Community Centre then waits to brings him home.

A ride in a monster truck highlighted his visit to Markham Fair. When older, he’d like to drive one, he says.

He’d call it “Autistic Thunder”.

A dream career is that of a paramedic.

Mayor Altmann admits it’s difficult for young people to take an interest in the political side of community life. Antwon and the other Boy Scouts seemed fascinated, he said.

“The mayor even shook my hand,” said Antwon.

Asked if in the future he’d like to hold this position, Antwon tactfully replied: “I’ll think about it.”

Make a difference on election day The election on Oct. 19 may determine our government for the next four years. If a party wins a majority government with 38 per cent of the vote, but only 50 per cent of the eligible voters actually vote, it means that only 19 per cent of the electorate has given a four-year mandate to a party the majority of Canadians may not wish to govern. That is why it is very important to get out and vote.

Study the issues and what each party has to offer, and vote. It is also important for those 18 to 35 years old to have your say by voting. If you want online voting, get out this time and vote for a party that will make it easier for you next time. This is your chance to make a difference, so please vote.

Cadets flying high, thanks to community I have volunteered around this community for a number of years, currently with Royal Canadian Legion Branch 459, serving as the rep to Marion Orr Air Cadet Squadron 707 for the past seven years.

They usually are committed to tagging on the same weekend as the Markham Fair. This event is the primary means of financing the training of the cadets. The conflict with the fair usually hampers their fundraising.

However, these cadets, combined with the support of the businesses and the citizens of the community, raised funding to within $8 of the funds raised last year.

These cadets are also committed to the direction of the Squadron Sponsoring Committee and the Ontario Provincial Command (who say when they can tag and when they can go gliding, which co-incidentally were the same weekend). As a result, we of the SSC found that the cadets cannot tag and glide at the same time, resulting in the estimates of the SSC being reduced drastically from the estimates of years gone by.

The final count resulted in the cadets, the citizens and the great businesses of Stouffville pulling this fundraising effort off, so that this 707 Squadron can continue to grow with the community. Well done, everyone, give yourself a pat on the back.

Shhh! Group wants GO train horns silenced

The town of Whitchurch-Stouffville passed a whistle cessation bylaw for two of its urban level train crossings back in 2011, but only now has the safety audit request been sent in.

“Only this year we got through all the requirements,” said Rob Flindall, director of public works for the municipality.

Council, in 2011, approved whistle cessations at the Hoover Park Drive/Ninth Line and Reeves Way Boulevard/Ninth Line level crossings.

A no-whistling bylaw was previously passed for the crossing at Millard and Church streets and only a bell is rung on Main Street, according to Flindall.

‘These are loud, loud horns that would blast you, if you live beside them, out of your bed if you weren’t ready for it.’

A Markham-based group of residents – norhorn.ca — is trying to get all GO train whistles silenced along the Stouffville line, from Markham to Lincolnville, just north of Stouffville.

A petition with more than 2,200 signa-

tures was presented to Markham council last week.

There are currently no plans to lobby Stouffville council, according to Shanta Sundarason, chairperson and co-founder of nohorn.ca.

Metrolinx may move to two-way, all day, electrified service, with trains running every 15 minutes between Union Station and Unionville and every 20 minutes between Unionville and Lincolnville.

“There is an incredible amount of traffic that comes down from Stouffville and other communities to the north. I applaud you for bringing RER (express rail) right up to Unionville, that 15-minute service, but if we could extend it to Stouffville, at least during peak hours, that would, I think, relieve a lot of pressure on the traffic and road system. Currently, it’s (already) gridlock, it’s absolute gridlock,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti at York Regional Council last month.

“It sounds kind of cute, anti-whistling.

It’s anything but (cute). These are loud, loud horns that would blast you, if you live beside them, out of your bed if you weren’t ready for it,” Scarpitti said.

“Train operators are either bullies or substance abusers or both. Let’s draw a line in the sand here and stifle the horns,” said Markham resident Robert Vallee during a Markham council meeting recetly.

Even though the municipality has passed a no train whistle bylaw at certain crossings, it does not mean the train conductor will never sound the whistle, which is really four toots of the horn. The driver will still whistle if there

are safety hazards such as people, vehicles or animals around the tracks, according to Flindall.

Measures, known as mazes, have been put into place on the sidewalks at the Hoover Park Drive and Reeves Way Boulevard crossings to help make them safer.

“At least you must potentially look up. …

It’s for the distracted person,” Flindall said.

“Only two days after reiterating her claim that she would not support a Pickering Airport, Liberal candidate Jane Philpott appears to have endorsed a massive and irresponsible expansion of the Markham Airport,” federal Conservative candidate Paul Calandra said in a media release a week ago Wednesday.

Not so, according to Philpott.

“This is a desperate attempt by Paul Calandra to change the channel from the struggling economy and Harper’s scandals. Many people in both Markham and Stouffville have requested my signs for their properties,” she told The Sun-Tribune via email last Thursday afternoon.

It’s the last skirmish between the frontrunners in the hotly contested new riding.

Calandra and Philpott have exchanged shots, in press releases and statements during the past week, first over mailouts to constituents by Calandra, the sitting MP for Oak Ridges-Markham, and criticism leveled at him by former Liberal leader Stéphane Dion in a visit to the riding.

“Let me be very clear, I have never seen a proposal for the Markham Airport. I am disappointed to see Mr. Calandra resort to spreading such unsubstantiated claims. I will remain focused on listening to voters and spreading our positive message for real change,” she stated.

Markham airport The signs were placed on Hwy. 48 in front of the Markham Airport, which is just north of Elgin Mills Road and between Hwy. 48 and Ninth Line, by its operator, Al Rubin.

Rubin told The Sun-Tribune he is a Conservative but now “I don’t believe Mr. Calandra, as a Conservative, represents me personally or the people of Oak Ridges or Markham, but Durham.”

Rubin and Philpott have never met.

Rubin said he went to her Stouffville office Wednesday afternoon but she was not there. He picked up some signs and put them on the airport’s more than 2,000 feet of frontage on Hwy. 48, just south of the Stouffville border.

“I did that personally,” he said.

“If Jane has more signs, I’d be quite happy to put them up,” he said.

Calandra claimed, in his media release, Rubin came to him Oct. 6 and “promised to support his campaign on the condition that he would endorse Mr. Rubin’s plan to significantly expand Markham Airport.

latest skirmish Calandra said he supports a general aviation replacement for Buttonville Airport, a 16th Avenue facility that is scheduled to close, on the non-agricultural lands in Pickering, which are designed for commercial use.

Rubin says he does not require Calandra’s support for an expansion because the airport deals directly with the Minister of Transport.

There were Calandra campaign signs erected across the highway from the airport last week, according to Rubin.

The federal election is Oct. 19.

The other two candidates running in the riding of MarkhamStouffville – Gregory Hines (NDP) and Myles O’Brien (Green) – did not respond to a request for comment).

That is the credo every person who has ever put pen to paper lives by. Playwright Johnny Wideman missed the memo.

Theatre of the Beat’s latest original play – This Will Lead to Dancing, written by Wideman, deals with a lesbian protagonist and her struggle with the Mennonite church’s exclusionary stance on homosexuality.

Wideman is a straight man.

“As a straight male it is a nerve wracking thing and very dangerous thing to write about,” he admitted. “You know you have to choose every word so specifically.”

To get into the minds of his characters and to truly understand the issues, Wideman took a year to write and spoke to friends, members of the LGBT community, as well as church leaders and theologians.

The theatre group also encountered funding challenges. The Mennonite church has previously been supportive, but not in this case, at least financially. However, they did accept donations on behalf of the group and provided tax receipts.

The Stouffville-based touring group received a $1,000 grant from the Ontario Arts Council. The rest of the money came from private donations.

“It’s just a lightning rod conversation, which is why we felt more compelled to do it,” he said.

“A lot of people are being hurt about the way the church is handling this whole process.”

The Mennonite church holds the belief that sex should occur in a heterosexual marriage, he said.

They have had four shows so far and the responses have been good. Congregations, including Presbyterian, have brought busloads of people to their shows, Wideman said.

“We don’t give answers. (However,) it definitely does lean towards inclusion,” he said.

The show comes to Stouffville’s Parkview Village, 12184 Ninth Line, Oct. 23. The Community Mennonite Church of Stouffville is the host. Show time is 7 p.m.

Admission is by pay-what-you-can, but $15 is suggested.

ear Ontario Secondary School Teacher’s Federation (OSSTF) and school boards across the province: Since Monday, October 6, 2015, the front doors and controlled entry systems of Halton’s and Ottawa’s public English elementary schools have been turned off as part of negotiation strategies between the union and the provincial government.

City News quotes Jo Dean, an executive officer with the OSSTF as saying that the task of controlling access in schools “has been downloaded on [the secretarial staff] and it just interrupts the day constantly.”

The CBC interviewed Cindy Dubue, the vice president of the OSSTF, who downplayed the risk faced by students by saying “there are schools

in Ottawa that don’t have buzzer systems.” She also blamed the Ottawa Carlton District School Board for not finding an alternative once the secretarial staff stopped controlling access.

And she argued that half security measures were better than a complete stoppage of school services.

Regardless of the deeply held positions at play in the negotiations, I encourage you to reverse your decision pertaining to the safety of the students.

Keep schools locked and children safe.

Everyone knows from watching our U.S. neighbours that elementary schools are vulnerable targets for the nefarious.

And everyone knows that while the prevalence is low, the outcomes are horrifying.

In Ontario, police stations, courthouses and federal Parliament have well controlled access. It was only October 22, 2014 that the nation was shocked by a series of shootings on Parliament Hill, and the ease with which a gunman was able to enter Centre Block. Schools in Canada have not been immune to atrocities. The potential outcomes to the families should be enough for such a negotiating tactic to be unthinkable.

If that is not enough, then consider how the law would treat unions and school boards if the worst case came to pass? Both organizations owe duties to the children for whom they are entrusted. That duty is a high one. It is a fiduciary duty, of utmost good faith.

In law, teachers and school boards are considered to be in the position of each child’s parent.

Should the worst come to pass, it is not an answer to say that some schools have buzzers and others do not. It is not an answer for both parties to blame the other and leave the doors open. It is not an answer to suggest that the inconvenience of a staff member justifies exposing children to such harm.

The scope of potential claimants could be as large as the entire family of every student at the school.

After a court struggles to quantify the loss to each discrete family and victim, the court would then consider punitive damages. These damages target not loss, but conduct. The defendant’s wrong is considered directly and separately in order to assess its severity and, accordingly, the appropriate degree of punishment. The other forms of damages look to the loss of the plaintiff, but punitive damages refer essentially to the degree of culpability of the defendant’s action. The punitive damages would be precedent setting.

How large? In the seminal case of Pilot v Whiten, the Supreme Court of Canada upheld a $1,000,000 punitive award against an insurance company that alleged its insured was an arsonist, when the evidence showed the opposite. That was one family and one insurance company, over damage to a reputation.

How much greater would the punitive damages be for the avoidable ruin of a community.

This is not a case that society ever wants to see happen.

Please, please, reconsider.

Is museum house haunted?

If no reasonable explanation can be found, then it must be an “unexplained phenomenon” and the Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum has a few of them.

For the second year in a row, the Wellington County Paranormal Investigators will share some of the unexplained phenomenons that have been occurring on the rural site, in particular, inside the Brown house.

The Haunted Museum takes place Oct. 24, 6 to 9 p.m.

James Brown constructed the Brown house on Concession 10 between 1850 and 1860. Upon James’ death is 1882, his son, John Johnson Brown, took it over. In 1923, his daughter Cora and her husband took over the farm in 1923.

Cora lived in the home until her death in 1952. Her husband lived there until 1965, according to Joan Crosbie, manager of culture and community services for the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville.

There has been a “presence” found in one of the bedrooms that does not want men in it, according to Crosbie.

There is also a presence in the basement, she said, which was not part of the original home. It was added as a secure base for the home and is used mostly for storage.

Before the house was moved to the museum’s property, the site was home to a saw-

mill. Whether or not the negative presence in the basement is related to the sawmill has yet to be determined.

The evening is not intended to be a scary event, but an investigation.

“Most people in this program believe. …

It’s presented as research,” Crosbie said.

It sold out last year and capacity is again set at 30.

Murderous reading at winery A murderous play reading takes place Oct. 29 and 30 at Willow Springs Winery.

It is hosted by Shawdowpath Theatre, Girls Inc. and Autism Ontario to fundraise and raise awareness of the latter two organizations.

Ordinary people, not professional actors, will read a one-act comedy, written by Alex Karolyi, a York Region resident and Shawdowpath’s artistic director.

The play takes place in the late 1960s at Andy Warhol’s art studio. A slew of celebrities are mingling, when all of a sudden there is a scream and a body. No one leaves until the murder is solved.

Roles are distributed by who registers first at www.readingsandmurder.eventbrite.ca.

Tickets are $38 each.

Halloween isn’t just for adults The annual Halloween Haunted House, at the Whitchurch-Stouffville Leisure Centre, takes place Oct. 23, 6 to 7:30 p.m. The Whitchurch-Stouffville Youth Council hosts it.

The event is for pre-schoolers and young children. It will feature a maze, henna tattoos, treats and games.

The Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum is hosting Ghoulicious: A Halloween Treat, Oct. 24, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

The event is for kids aged three to 10.

Grand Opening Stouffville Yoga Life

Held its Grand Opening on Sunday, October 4th at their new location at

The Marion Drexler Band is providing the live music at this year’s annual SIP banquet.

The 11th annual fundraiser for the Stouffville Igoma Project takes place Oct. 23 at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club. The reception begins at 6 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m.

The evening also includes a silent auction and special speaker, CTV’s Lance Brown.

SIP is a humanitarian partnership between Stouffville and Igoma, Tanzania, which began in 1998 when a handful of people from

Whitchurch-Stouffville travelled to Africa under the banner of Stouffville Missionary Church. Those 13 people built a building they hoped would one day become a medical clinic.

Over the years, a number of projects have been completed, including the construction of the medical facility, which operates 24/7; the installation of a reverse osmosis water purification system and an ultrasound machine.

SIP is currently working on providing mother/child/infant care services and in the future, they hope to have eye and dental services; AIDS/HIV training and compassionate assistance, as well as provide a facility for education expansion.

The Stouffville Spirit celebrated Thanksgiving weekend with more than just a big dinner. Taking to the ice for three contests during the long weekend, the Spirit appeared to have shaken off their early season doldrums after skating off with two victories and one overtime loss. That enabled them to procure five out of a possible six points as they hope to inch their way out of the North cellar.

The Spirit began things off by winning for the first time ever at the Wellington Community Centre with a 2-0 blanking of the host Wellington Dukes Friday. Rookie Jack Varga’s goal with 92 seconds remaining in the second period proved to be the game-winning tally.

Aaron Taylor stopped 24 shots for his first shutout of the season.

The same two clubs met at the Stouffville Arena the following night and battled their way into overtime, before the visiting Dukes skated off with a 3-2 win. The Spirit, however, procured one point in the process. Spirt captain Spencer Roberts and Kyle Thomas scored.

With the arch-rival Newmarket Hurricanes at the Stouffville Arena Thanksgiving Monday, James Mense-Dietrich and Roberts delivered unanswered goals in the third period to propel the Spirit to a 3-2 win. Trailing 2-0 in the second period, the Spirit cut the deficit on a goal from recently acquired Ryan DaSilva.

INSIDER: The Spirit made a couple of roster moves prior to Friday’s game. They released veteran defenceman Greg Allen, then filled that void when they acquired DaSilva from the Orangeville Flyers for cash. The 17-year-old Newmarket resident, who is in his second season in the OJHL, made his debut in Wellington Friday.

A pair of Spirit graduates played an instrumental role in helping the Clarkson University Golden Knights hockey team win their season opening game over Rochester Institute of Technology 6-0 in Pots-

dam, N.Y. Friday. Stouffville resident and Clarkson captain Paul Geiger scored a second-period power play goal and forward Christian Powers lit the red light to start the third period. Geiger, 23, and Powers, 24, are in their senior year. Senior Drake Caggiula, 21, had two assists as fourth ranked University of North Dakota’s won the Ice Breaker Tournament in Portland, Me. All three were on the Spirit’s Ontario Junior Hockey League championship club in 2011-12.

Former Spirit defenceman Brennan Serville will start this season with the Manitoba Moose of the AHL. A University of Michigan graduate, Serville, 22, was a third round pick of the Winnipeg Jets in the 2011 NHL draft. Serville played with the Spirit from 2009-11.

GENERALLY SPEAKING: Roberts is optimistic the weekend will reverse the fortunes of a team that was winless in its first 10 contests.

“That’s a big weekend,” said Roberts, the nephew of ex-NHLer Gary Roberts. “This will be a turning point for us. It gives us confidence.

The attitude is great in the room. Now, the guys are having fun.”

“To get five out of six points we certainly can’t complain,” said Taylor.

As for defeating Wellington for the first time in their rink, Taylor said he did not know about that accomplishment entering the game.

“The last time we played there they beat us late in the game on a fluky goal,” he said. “But to win in Wellington for the first time was a stat I did not know about until afterwards.”

Taylor pointed to their road game against the Cobourg Cougars last week when they skated off with their first win of the season in a 3-2 decision.

“When we got our first win the guys calmed down and got the monkey off their back and we talked about what we did right and what we can still improve on,” he said.

In acquiring DaSilva, Kenny Burrows, Spirit co-owner and general manager, said he was a player they were monitoring over the last couple of years and pounced on the opportunity to acquire him.

Reinforcing Burrows’ assessment was feedback he received from Varga and defenceman Kyle Linney, who played with DaSilva during

their days with the York Simcoe Express.

“He’s a young kid and when he’s done in this league he will be a top end defenceman,” Burrows predicted. “He’s a kid that should play at the next level.”

Allen, who played last season with the Spirit and attended Oshawa Generals’ Ontario Hockey League training camp this fall, told Burrows he was going to quit hockey.

Eventually, in 1991, they moved to Hesperus, an elder community near Richmond Hill, where Kaz lived until his death. Doris died in 2006.

he extraordinary life of Kazimierz Chomko ended Oct. 3 at age 103. His legacy, however, lives on.

The Richmond Hill resident’s interesting and eclectic life began in Poland. By age 12 he left home to keep accounts for his aunt, who ran a cafe in Czerna Bialystock, in the east of Poland. Kaz, as his friends knew him, became a police officer. When the Second World War broke out, he served as a tank troop commander with the Canadian Army, where he made a pact with his men to kill no one, but only take prisoners.

Twice during the war, he was captured and escaped.

Anna Carling’s book about Kaz’s war years, titled Drop Your Weapons — the Kaz Chomko Story, was published in 2011, for Kaz’s 100th birthday. Not wanting to return to a communist Poland after the war, Kaz immigrated to Canada, where he first worked near Richmond Hill as a farm labourer.

Later, he sold life insurance to loggers in Northern Ontario. It was during that time he met his wife, Doris, who was teaching in Timmins. When the Second World War broke, out he served as a tank troop commander with the Canadian Army, where he made a pact with his men to kill no one, but only take prisoners.

Kazimierz Chomko. skilled carpenter, he built a house, barn and garage for the family, all of which stand today.

In 1967, when a fall and injury meant he could no longer continue farming, the family moved to Oshawa, where Kaz sold real estate.

He decided to retire and devote himself to helping run the St. Vincent de Paul’s Marygrove Camp for

disadvantaged girls. Later, Doris also retired and joined him at Marygrove in Penetanguishene.

It was during this time when the Toronto Archdiocese started a program to train lay deacons. Doris encouraged Kaz to participate and helped him with his studies and homework. He was then about 65.

“Mr. Chomko has taken the story of his life as a soldier, deacon and community volunteer and transformed it into a message of peace and hope that inspires us and enhances our sense of civic pride.”

“Mr. Chomko is a true ambassador for peace and he is wonderful example of volunteerism,” said Ward 4 Councillor Sandra Yeung Racco, who nominated him for the award. “He is dedicated to improving the community by helping students develop their literacy skills and he uses his message of peace to motivate others to remain actively involved in civic life.”

The award is presented annually to one resident from each of Vaughan’s five wards. The awards recognize outstanding achievement and individual contributions to the community.

Kaz is survived by his two sons, Richard and Robert, and by their wives, Elisabeth and Lisa, and their children, Sylvia, Erik, Jonathan, Katrina, Sarah, Dominic and Theresa, and great-grandchildren Rebecca and Jessica.

Kaz’s funeral was Oct. 7 at St. Mary Immaculate Church in Richmond Hill and his body was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, next to that of Doris.

She spent many happy years caring for children as a committed foster parent together with her late husband. Joyce thoroughly enjoyed nature and loved all living creatures, especially birds. She also loved all types of flowers and plants and spent many rewarding hours cultivating her garden.

She paid particular attention to her beautiful dark purple clematis and her favourite flower, the lily of the valley. In her early years, Joyce was a talented artist. She enjoyed oil painting and often painted many colourful landscapes. She also loved to sing and sang lead in the Melody Makers of Markham Barber Shop Chorus. Joyce had a great appreciation for all types of music, but had a special fondness for bagpipes. She attended many Highland Games with her family over the years and was quite proud of her English, Scottish and Irish lineage.

Joyce was a loving, kind and generous wife, mother and grandmother whose unwavering compassion and support knew no boundaries. She possessed an inner strength and unwavering determination that was admired by all who knew her. She always faced the challenges in her life with courage and grace. Her beautiful smile, gentle spirit and warm heart will be greatly missed.

Family and friends will be received at the McDougall and Brown Funeral Home, 2900 Kingston Road, Toronto, Ontario M1M 1N5 on Saturday, October 17th at 11 a.m. with service to follow in the chapel. Interment Highland Memory Gardens, 33 Memory Gardens Lane.

Stouffville District Secondary School’s senior girls’ seven’s rugby team had a strong finish to their York Region Athletic Association tier one regular season, after winning all three matches to earn a second-place finish at Alexander Mackenzie High School Tuesday.

By virtue of their placement, the Spartans also secured a berth in a provincial tournament this month at Fletcher’s Field.

The Spartans started off the day with a 30-0 win over St. Theresa of Lisieux (Richmond Hill). Anna Horner recorded three tries while Keely Patterson, Anika Belmont and Karoline Thompson-Bruce each had one.

Facing first-place Sacred Heart (Newmarket) in their second match, the Spartans handed them with their first loss of the season in a 25-15 win. Horner and Patterson each recorded a pair of tries and Talie Lockman added one.

“They played an aggressive defence, and really executed in the tackle. We turned over many loose balls, and did a great job of controlling the ball in windy conditions,” said Jim Monk, Spartans co-coach.

The Spartans concluded regular season play at 4-1-4.

In tier two girls’ action, the Spartans won two matches over Father Bressani 20-5 and Alexander Mackenzie 15-5 and lost two against St. Jean de Brebeuf 20-15 and Dr. J.M. Denison 15-5.

In boys’ rugby action, the Spartan seniors defeated Keswick High School 19-7.

The Spartans then lost to Bill Crothers 26-12, eventual champion St. Theresa of Lisieux 39-7 and Dr. J.M. Denison 19-5. The Spartans concluded their YRAA tier one season with a 3-9 mark.

After being blanked by St. Theresa of Lisieux 30-0, the junior Spartans fell 25-5 to eventual champion Denison 25-5.

However, he is requesting that “the few” who actually took items, take steps to gain absolution.

“I would like them to come in and apologize and make a donation to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank,” he told The Sun-Tribune, explaining the farm is supporting the charity with a corn maze, which was also heavily used Monday.

The incident began on Thanksgiving Monday after Reesor said he decided, as he does every year, to give his entire staff the day off, which includes employees of the farm, market and bakery.

Witnesses told police that before 4 p.m., cars began parking on the side of the road at the farm and individuals began entering the pumpkin patch and taking photographs.

Over time, Reesor, said it became clear some people were leaving money for the farm and taking away pumpkins.

That, he said, appears to have led others to take pumpkins themselves, but without paying.

“People were probably thinking, ‘Oh, we can just take them’,” he said. “It was bad judgment, it was a pumpkin fiasco, but it was a nice day and people just wanted to spend some time at the farm. They think it’s public property, they probably just weren’t thinking.”

He noted that while many people did think the farm was open due to the crowds, he also explained there were clear indica-

tions that it was indeed shut.

Eventually, the number of cars and people grew so large, police were called in and forced to send people away.

After people were spotted sharing photos of their adventures on Instagram, the photos began to circulate on Facebook and Twitter with disparaging comments.

Some of the comments include the actions being called “disgusting” “sickening” and “appalling”.

Reesor said he has received phone calls by those being heavily criticized on Twitter, despite not taking anything and asked those calling people out to use a bit more discretion.

“I really appreciate people on social media coming forward, but you can’t do that without knowing the whole story,” he added.

“It’s just not fair or appropriate.”

Reesor has taken a different approach, simply chalking the incident up to some bad behaviour mixed in with plenty of confusion and he asks everyone to move forward.

“I am a firm believer that good can come from not-so-good circumstances,” he said in a lengthy statement on the farm’s Facebook page. “Moving forward, let’s all strive to be even more respectful and to think twice before we do what we see everybody else doing.”

He was applauded by many for his measured remarks on his Facebook page.

A Facebook account belonging to Sheri Gammon Dewling, wrote: ‪”‬What a kind and generous approach you are taking to this negative situation. Well done!!! ... You have just turned me, an occasional Reesor Farm shopper, into a dedicated Reesor Farm shopper.”

Another account belonging to a Jackie Macdonald-Bartkiw read: “What a classy and “high road” response. You have just taught us all how to work hard, take care of the community and respond to unkindness with compassion. What tremendous role models.
