When Joanne George adopted a golden retriever in 2004 named Smiley who was born without eyes, little did she know what the next 13 years had in store.

What started out as rescue dog turned into a partnership that George couldn’t have imagined.

Their time together came to an end Oct. 14 as Smiley was euthanized to spare him from the suffering of stomach and liver cancer.

It was a very difficult decision for George. But as Smiley’s symptoms worsened in recent days she said she did what she thought was best. "I promised him and myself that I wouldn’t let him suffer," she said. "He lived 16 years. That’s pretty unbelievable."

ario D’Addese stood at the window of Fame Men’s Hairstylist Oct. 16 to catch a glimpse of the show. The barber and owner of the shop on Main Street in Stouffville watched as a crowd gathered in front of Pastaggio Italian Eatery to greet Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

He was on hand with cavalcade of high profile ministers, including Finance Minister Bill Morneau and Markham-Stouffville MP and Minister of Indigenous Services Jane Philpott, to announce the federal government’s plan to reduce the small business tax rate from 10. 5 per cent to 9 per cent in 2019.

"This tax cut will support Canada’s small businesses so that they can keep more of their hard earned money," Trudeau said at the news conference. Finance Minister Bill Morneau said the move could give small businesses in Canada up to an additional $7,500.

As Trudeau left Stouffville in his black motorcade, D’Addese was still the window watching.

He said the 1.5-per-cent

cut would change very little for him. The municipal property tax on his business has gone from $3,400 when he moved in to $15,000. Increasing hydro and water rates have also put the squeeze on. "I have to work an extra hour. Do

two more haircuts," he said. The 1.5-per-cent cut will amount to very little actual money back in his business, he said.

Just as D’Addese finished talking, Morneau walked into his shop, shook his hand and told him the

government was lowering his taxes. D’Addese informed the minister his costs were going up regardless of the announcement.

Morneau told him they couldn’t solve everything.

"He certainly got out of here quick," D’Addese said with a laugh.

It was much the same story at Velvet Sunrise Coffee Roasters on Ringwood Drive in Stouffville. A pleasant espresso aroma wafted out of the backroom where Mark Hayward was roasting a fresh batch of coffee beans. The proposed tax cut represents very little actual money for Velvet Sunrise, Hayward said.

"It’s not that much because we don’t make a lot of profit," he said.

Last year, he said they paid more than $3,000 in taxes to the federal government. He’s far more concerned about a proposed increase in minimum wage and the spiking hydro rates than the federal small business tax rate. That’s not to say Hayward didn’t think the tax cut was a good thing. It just doesn’t end up making much of any difference for him in the grand scheme of things.

United Ways will be stronger together If ever there was proof that there is strength in numbers, it’s the results of the United Way fundraising campaigns in Toronto and York Region after the organizations amalgamated in 2015.

Before they merged, the two charities separately raised a total of $97 million.

Together, in 2015 they raised $100.2 million. And in 2016, that rose to $102 million.

Now the United Way Toronto and York Region hopes to raise $103 million in its annual fundraising campaign, launched last week to fight poverty, build strong communities and help kids.

The decision to combine organizations was clearly a good idea in 2015. And it raised the question of why more United Ways across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) don’t join forces to create one powerhouse charity working to create a better life for everyone in the region.

Last week, that idea came a step closer to reality with the announcement that the boards of trustees of United Way Peel (representing Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon) and United Way Toronto and York Region have unanimously agreed to amalgamate. If members of Peel agree to it at a meeting on Oct. 26, the organizations will unite on April 1, 2018.

That would be a welcome move, indeed.

As Daniele Zanotti, CEO of the United Way Toronto and York Region, noted, the merger will allow those involved in United Way to do more to strengthen communities across the GTA: "Whether it’s giving young people the right start in life or solving local poverty, these issues aren’t contained to one spot on the map."

Peel’s interim CEO and president, Anita Stellinga, believes the proposed merger, will strengthen their fundraising while also allowing them to continue to meet the needs of the communities they serve. She said there’s increasing competition for fundraising dollars and joining the world’s largest United Way in the Toronto York organization will give them greater reach. If approved, she feels it will increase her organization’s scope and give it a more impactful voice in the region while also better serving residents and their donors.

The ability to raise more funds with a bigger regional agency is happy news for the hundreds of charities that depend on each of these United Ways for support.

Indeed, last year, the United Way Toronto and York Region provided ongoing support for 220 local agencies, while Peel supports 53 agencies with a fundraising goal this year of $11.4 million.

Whether those agencies house the homeless, feed the hungry or shelter the abused, they all deserve our support.

The fall campaigns are now underway at all United Way agencies across the region. Please give generously.

The community you build with your donations is ultimately your own.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Totem pole could have been moved to art gallery Re: York board removing totem pole at Stouffville school after complaint, Sept. 29.

Thank you for the informative article regarding the removal of the totem pole at Summitview Public School.

It’s too bad that common sense has lost its way.

This totem pole, as you indicated in your article, was researched and created by 12 year olds in the early ’70s. Can the school board not realize that this was made by 12 year olds with the limited resources they had at the time (i.e. no computers)?

She is not sending a very good message to current students. Why bother researching and creating

anything, If it will later be disposed of.

The easiest solution would be to erect a plaque stating this is an art installation that was created with information available from 1973. Or move it to Latcham Art gallery as an art form to be used as a part of Stouffville’s history.

Don’t confuse ’R’s Re: York Region residents recycle 91 per cent of their garbage, Oct. 1.

York Region residents should be proud of their accomplishments with respect to waste management. We were early adopters of the blue box and green bin, and current initiatives like textile recycling demonstrate an ongo-

ing commitment to the "3 Rs." But those three Rs exist in a hierarchy, with "reduce" at the top, followed by "reuse" and completed by "recycle." (There is now a fourth R, "recover," as in recovering energy from waste.) The distinction matters: yes, our waste diversion rate is high, but our total amount of waste produced - regardless of where it ends up - is also high. While obviously preferable to landfills, recycling still comes with significant environmental and economic costs.

True waste reduction is cheaper and cleaner, and does not require bureaucracies, trucks or processing plants. It requires a simple choice by residents to consume smarter, and consume less.

Woman loses special photo in car break-in SIMON MARTIN smartin@yrmg.com Thanksgiving Monday turned sour for Stouffville resident Fran Piercey. At 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 10, her video surveillance system captured footage of someone breaking into two cars on her driveway on Manitoba Street.

While the intruder made off with some petty cash and lottery tickets, he managed to also take something close to Fran’s heart.

"He took my son’s picture," she said. It was a memento that had been given to Fran by her son, Ken, shortly before he died five years ago.

She took the picture everywhere with her, so its loss has been difficult for Fran to digest.

Fran said a bunch of her neighbours have reported similar issues in recent months. She hopes video from the incident can help identify the person.

Car break-ins are common, York Regional Police Const. Andy Pattenden said. In the vast majority of the cases, Pattenden said they are breaking into cars with unlocked doors.

"Lock your doors and don’t leave valuables in your car," Pattenden said.

In Piercey’s case, their car doors were unlocked. "That was our mistake," Fran said. Her family had returned from the cottage earlier that night and Fran and her daughter were fetching things from the car at 2 a.m., about 90 minutes before the break-in.

A NOTE FROM EVAN....

After three decades at the helm of Village Grocer, and following a great deal of thought and reflection, I have decided to make a change. It’s a development that excites me, and which I’m looking forward to. Basically, I am stepping back from the day-to-day management of VG in order to “return to my roots” – which will result in more direct interaction between me and our customers. To make this happen, I am delighted to welcome my friend Brad Fletcher to handle the executive level management of the business. Brad is a modest fellow, so I will take it upon myself to boast about his lengthy and successful senior-level executive experience - which Village Grocer is now so fortunate to have in the person leading our team. Plus, and this is very close to my heart, Brad will be a business mentor to my son Thomas, who wishes at some point to carry on our 30-year Family Business. While thinking about this change over the last few months, I frequently reflected on how incredibly blessed Cathy and I have been with the richness of the experience in developing our very humble little business into something bigger. We had no idea when we started out that we would be where we are today, and we had no idea how much work it would be, how much fun it would be, and how many friends that we would make along the way...and what community really was. So many of our friends have shared our ups and downs along the way, as we have shared theirs too…that’s the community part. Intertwined in this whole fantastic episode is our immediate and extended family, whom most of you have come to know through the store, their sports, school and their many extra-curriculars. Further, the people who have chosen to work with us all these years have brought lots of enjoyment to our day-to-day lives; something which I truly appreciate and am thankful for.

As for what I’ll be doing – perhaps “Minister Without Portfolio” is the best description. I’ll be frequently serving customers at VG’s meat counter (for those who don’t know, that’s where I come from. I’m a butcher by training and trade). I’ll also be a “rover” around the store – helping out where and when needed, plus I’ll be the in-house repairman. There’s always something that needs fixing and I love doing that stuff. Plus, every spring, I will be front-line involved in our robust outdoor flower and garden center. My happiness is measured by how dirty my hands are! So, that’s the plan. I’m handing over the day-to-day management of VG to a guy who really knows what he’s doing at the executive leadership level – and as a result, I will now be more available to you – our valued customers – on a regular basis. (Although I might, on occasion, be AWOL during the summer to play a round or two of golf!)

Pretty well every week we feature a fresh sausage, so this time we thought we’d double down on our sausage business and feature a pair of smoked sausages. Made by my favourite French Canadian butcher, John. We’ve got local flavour by the bushel at the deli this week, starting with our Cranberry Quinoa, a healthy salad that doesn’t hold back on the tastebuds. This is loaded with slivered almonds, dried cranberries, peppers and onions in our homemade brandied cranberry sauce. Reg. $2.99/100g I consider myself to be the apex predator amongst my roommates, I do most of the heavy lifting in the kitchen and often find my leftovers picked over by those vultures when I’m not looking. My solution has been to make a big pot of soup every week that they are free to help themselves to. Last week I tried my hand at one of my favourites from the store, our Curried Squash and Apple Soup. I used local buttercup squash, Courtland apples, roasted peppers, and sweetened with a zip of maple syrup. The results were sublime but still admittedly not as good as Kulam’s. So, I deferred to the master this week and had him make a batch for all of you to enjoy. It’s seriously amazing stuff.

Common sense the best defence during armed robbery Never a day goes by we don’t hear or read about incidents of armed robberies or stabbings in the Greater Toronto Area including York Region.

While few will ever experience events so frightening, there are no guarantees. Be it McDonald’s, Tim Hortons or Wendy’s, a guntoting thug may enter these premises at any time day or night.

What should one do? On occasions we’ve all thought about this, particularly those of us who drop into a fast-food restaurant during late evenings or early mornings.

Should one head for the closest door? Should one dive under the nearest table? Should one play the role of hero, maybe a dead hero, and try pinning the goon to the floor?

What would you do?

While the computer provides stacks of advice for fast-food employees, few safeguards are offered piteous patrons who somehow seem left to fend for themselves.

Anxious for advice? Recently, I posed the question to a police officer based here in Stouffville. And was pleased with her response.

"Should you possess a portable phone, call police," she said. "If not, run, hide or make yourself as small as possible." She mentioned nothing about hitting the hoodlum with a flying tackle.

For some, however, this tactic has proved successful. In a Hamilton coffee shop, a customer waited until the would-be thief was busy packing his ill-gotten loot into a bag, then he charged, brandishing a chair. The assault so surprised the thug he dropped his gun. The patron then dropped him with a blow to the head. He was still in a dazed state when police arrived.

In gun-crazy United States, armed holdups are regular happenings, especially in cities like Detroit, Chicago and New York.

Shootouts, according to reports, are much like oldstyle westerns except, in too many cases, the bad guys are the only ones left standing.

While, for patrons, the run/hide defence may be the only practical protection, what’s the waiter/ waitress behind the counter supposed to do? The following are a few official

suggestions, some perhaps easier said than done.

1. Remain calm and obey the robber. Do only what he demands. Breathe deeply.

Control your fear.

2. Raise your hands and don’t move. If you must move, tell him what you’re going to do. Ensure he can always see your hands.

3. Don’t engage in a discussion. Don’t try to change his mind. Speak only if spoken to. Answer in a confident voice.

4. Keep him informed.

Make sure there are no surprises.

5. Give him what he demands. Be honest about the amount of money you can give him.

6. Attempt to remember these elements - age, sex, race, height, weight, colour of hair and eyes, clothing, weapon type, scars and tattoos.

7. Do not give chase. Note the direction by which the robber leaves; the make and colour of his vehicle and, if possible, the licence number. Call police.

However, for the customer, waiter or waitress, the code of conduct would seem to be: "Unless you’re a karate course graduate, do nothing that might endanger your life." Common sense is the best defence.

to social media the reaction was immense. The beloved canine had 107,000 followers on Facebook and 188,000 followers on Instagram.

"My phone is blowing up from everywhere. I’m getting messages from Bangladesh, India, every state in the United States. He has a lot of followers," George said.

While Smiley’s fame went worldwide his journey with George was rooted in Whitchurch Stouffville. Back when George adopted him there was no Facebook and Instagram.

She had rescued many dogs before Smiley and was always able to find a loving home for them but she said nobody seemed to want Smiley due to his physical state. George soon realized that Smiley had a special effect on people. She would always take him to visit her grandma at the nursing

There was the time when a lady on the side-

walk took notice of Smiley.

Later she would tell George that there was something about Smiley’s story and

presence that helped her through a difficult time in her life. "He inspired people just to do good and give

back," George said.

With George, Smiley became a certified child therapy dog with St. John’s Ambulance. He visited schools once or twice a week, did private home visits for people in need of a pick-me-up.

The importance of Smiley in many people’s lives wasn’t lost on Whitchurch-Stouffville Mayor Justin Altmann. "Smiley didn’t see the outside of a human but the inside of a human. He brought light to every room, warmth to every heart hope to every child, man and woman and made our town and the world around us a better place to live," Altmann said. "We thank Smiley for sharing and allowing us to be part of his well lived and blessed life."

While many people have reached out to George to offer support, she said there is many ways people can pay their respect to Smiley.

One way is to support the

St. John Therapy Dog Program. "There is so many amazing teams doing a lot in their community. They certainly don’t go unnoticed," George said.

Another way to show support would be to give a rescue dog a chance.

"There’s so many dogs out there that need home," she said. "You don’t need to buy a special order one."

George urged families to consider a special needs dog. While it may seem like onerous responsibility, George said they will surprise you. "As humans we tend to dwell on our struggles where as dogs never do that," she said. "They have a lot to teach us." Smiley certainly did.

A candlelight vigil for Smiley was held at 6 p.m. on Oct. 15 at Memorial Park. It brought out more than 100 people and 30 dogs who gathered to pay tribute to the beloved therapy dog and celebrate his life.

New church dedication ceremony

There will be a new church dedication ceremony Oct. 21 at 159 Sandiford Dr., WhitchurchStouffville.

The Canadian Mar Thoma Church Toronto is a local community church situated in Markham from 1987 onwards on 313 Main St. Markham North.

Since the membership has grown by leaps and bounds, the members coming from the western part of the GTA formed another parish in Milton Ontario.

Since the membership grew again beyond its capacity, the parish bought 2.5 acres of land on Sandiford Drive, Stouffville in 2014 and started construction of a new church building in May of 2016.

Within 16 months, this magnificent worship place became a reality. On Oct. 21 at 4 p.m., the church is being consecrated.

Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Hon. Jane Philpott; Provincial Minister Hon. Helena Jaczek; Justin Altman, Mayor of the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville; bishops, parish ministers and believers from local and GTA churches are expected to attend the new church dedication ceremony.

The Mar Thoma Church has its origin in AD 52 in Kerala, India.

The Canadian Mar Thoma Church was established as a congregation in May of 1978 and was worshipping at Wycliffe College in Toronto prior to moving to Markham.

Notice of Completion GO Rail Network Electrification Transit Project Assessment Process Metrolinx and Hydro One, as co-proponents, have completed an Environmental Project Report (EPR) in accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08 for the GO Rail Network Electrification Project.

The Project As part of Regional Express Rail, Metrolinx is proposing to electrify GO-owned corridors. The GO Rail Network Electrification undertaking will entail design and implementation of a traction power supply system and power distribution components including: an Overhead Contact System (OCS) along the rail corridors, electrical feeder routes, and a number of traction power facilities located within the vicinity of the rail corridors.

SPROXTON: Eleanor Jean - With heavy hearts we announce that Eleanor Jean Sproxton of Woodville Ontario, peacefully passed away at age 83 surrounded by family on the afternoon of October 11 2017. From her birth in Unionville, Ontario on August 26, 1934 to her death she nourished people and the land around her with tireless love and devotion. She was raised on a farm near Stouffville by Oliver and Laura Reid and was the Third of Seven children. Left to honour “Ellieâ€? and remember her love are her four children David, Norm, George (Jean), and John (Karen); Eleven Grandchildren; Steven, Bruce, Andrew, Michael, Mitchell, Adam (Rachael), Nicole, Ashley, Kyle, Drew, and Marissa; Four GreatGrandchildren; Liam, Cylus, Kloe, And Huxley; Five Siblings; Eileen, Frank, Marion, Dale, and Donna; and many nieces and nephews; Eleanor was predeceased by her parents, and brother Gord, as well as her loving husband Herbert. She will be remembered as a bright, strong and dedicated farmer, sports-lover and family woman in the church and community she served. Funeral services were held on Monday October 16, 2017 inside the Woodville United Church. Rev. Wanda Stride ofďŹ ciated. Burial followed at Smith Cemetery just outside of Woodville. The Sproxton family would like to extend their utmost gratitude to everyone who sent their condolences or joined us to honour and celebrate Eleanor’s life. SMITH, Donna Lee Peacefully passed away on Monday, October 16, 2017 at the Markham Stouffville Hospital at the age of 64 years. Born September 16, 1953 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, she was the daughter of the late Idella and Arthur Thompson. Beloved and devoted wife to surviving husband Brian. Loving mother to sons Michael and Matthew. Also surviving her are brothers Wayne and Calvin Thompson; Uncle Charlie Zeiger and Aunt Dorothy Velente; sisters-in-law, Janet and Catherine; and her nieces Kiley, Charlotte, Stephanie and Vanessa.

Her Aunt Marion Zeiger and nephew Michael Thompson preceded her death. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at Highland Hills Funeral Home and Cemetery (12492 Woodbine Ave., 905-888-5990) from 11:00 a.m. until the memorial service at 1:00 p.m., followed by inurnment at Highland Hills Cemetery.
