The farm is closing to the public Oct. 31 after selling produce for more than 60 years SIMON MARTIN smartin@yrmg.com

ilbert Whittamore wanted to grow strawberries. He had a bought a 50-acre farm on Steeles Avenue in 1952 with his wife Evelyn, and by 1957, he had a pretty good strawberry crop. The only problem was the weather conspired against him.

A big rain came the July 1 weekend.

"We couldn’t commercially pick the strawberries anymore," he said. While many of the berries were damaged there were still some that were in decent shape. Whittamore didn’t want to see them go to waste, so he put a sign up on the road: pickyour-own strawberries. A number of people saw the sign and came to take part. "We did a pretty good salvage job," he said.

The next year, conditions weren’t ideal again. "It wasn’t wet. It was dry. The patch dried up after one picking," he said.

There were still some nice berries to be had here and there so he put the sign up again and raised the price slightly. Again, a good number of people stopped to harvest the crop themselves.

"There was this one lady that was quite happy to chat with me," he said. "She said, ’Gee this has been fun. You should do it every year.’" That advice stuck with Whittamore and by 1959 he was selling strawberries to the public.

Fast-forward 58 years and Whittamore’s is the preeminent entertainment farm in the GTA. That’s why it came as a shock to the community when the family announced 2017 would be the

last year the farm would open to the public. The Whittamores will continue to own and farm the land, but the farm shop, Fun Farm Yard, pick-your-own and Pumpkinland facilities will no longer be operational.

On a sunny October weekday, the parking lot was jammed with school buses and cars as

people made one last visit to the farm.

Andrea, of Stouffvile, remembers coming with her mom 50 years ago to pick strawberries. "I made a point of coming before it closes," she said.

A multi-generational customer is the norm at Whittamore’s.

People like Norman and Marga-

ret Hughes have been coming to the farm for more than 20 years.

"We’re sorry to see them go," Norman said. "It’s good crops.

Very fresh with good service."

Margaret once made her own , chili sauce and rhubarb jam.

But now she comes to Whittamore’s to get her fix.

It’s much the same story for Helen McCubbin and Joanne Cleator, who made the trip from Scarborough. "We try to make it twice a year," McCubbin said of 20 years of visiting the farm.

Dressed in blue jeans, a Whittamore’s T-shirt and sunglasses, Frank Whittamore was busy fixing a driveway on the farm as customers poured in.

In less than a week, Frank, wife Suzanne and brother Mike Whittamore will encounter a new reality-a bittersweet one for the family.

"We had amazing customers,"

Frank said. But at the same time the business is a grind; it’s basically a 24/7 job during the season, he said. With no next generation waiting in the wings to take over, Frank said the family had to make a decision and it is one they are comfortable with.

Mike said he will continue to farm the land but will change some of the crops. Encased in the Rouge Park, the farm looks to be spared from imminent development.

Frank started the shop on Steeles in the late 1980s - an evolution of a roadside stand.

As the business grew, the Whittamores employed thousands of people over the years.

Maybe none longer than Lillian Igel, who started working at the farm as university student in 1992 and never left.

"It’s been a true privilege to work for this family. They are very special people," she said.

When she first started working there were six girls, now there is up to 65 employees depending on the time of year. She says the farm helps fill a desire people have for getting back to the basics. hat environment that so many people have come to enjoy is a testament to the owners, she said. "They are unsung heroes of the community," she said.

Across the road, Dale Reesor was out combining soybeans in his John Deere. He grew up with the Whittamore boys when Steeles was a gravel road.

"I remember the strawberries," he said. "They were pioneers for doing pick-your-own."

Reesor, who has his own sweet corn stand on Steeles and in various locations Scarborough, describes Whittamore’s as the original buy local in the area. He can remember the cars parked down the road on Steeles on Canada Day to pick strawberries.

"It got crazy busy," he said. "It will certainly be different without them."

Good riddance to employee discount tax idea Hopefully, by now, employees in Canada’s retail sector - or what remains of it, at least - can breathe a little easier knowing the Canada Revenue Agency isn’t poised to take aim at the discounts they receive from their employers.

Such incentives, which range from the meagre - a small percentage off the retail price of a given item, for example - to the generous - such as being able to buy merchandise at the employer’s cost - are commonplace in the customer service industry and serve as something of an enticement for would-be employees in a sector where a great many of the front-line staff members are paid minimum wage. Given that, it seemed the CRA was effectively talking about flipping retail workers upside down and shaking them by the ankles until their loose change fell out.

The controversy began earlier this month when a 2016 update to CRA documents, stating that employees who receive a discount on the price of merchandise owing to their employment should have the value of said discount included in their income, was thrust in the spotlight via a Globe and Mail story. The policy went on to say the value of the benefit should be calculated as the difference between the retail price of the item less the amount the employee paid.

No amount would be included in the event the same discount was offered to members of the public in some manner.

Business groups, some of whom had decried the notion when it first came up but whose objections largely went unnoticed, argued it would be a nightmare to track their employees’ discounts, while other stakeholders voiced concern that employment incentives could be scrapped altogether by companies simply to avoid the aggravation.

Despite a Liberal MP initially suggesting that any employee discount not offered to the public at some point would be fair game under the new rules, the federal government quickly distanced itself from the policy, expressing "disappointment" in CRA bureaucrats, and prompted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to tweet assurances to retail workers that their discounts weren’t in the crosshairs.

The government, in consultation with industry stakeholders, will now go back and review the policy and craft a new response to the 2011 court ruling that triggered the update in the first place.

In any case, after the PR mess, it’s safe to say the idea of taxing retail employee discounts won’t soon be resurrected, and that’s a good thing. It was a wrong-headed idea that unfairly targeted workers in a sector primarily comprised of people at the lower end of the income spectrum.

Disappointed by decision to move totem pole Shame, shame, shame on the decision to remove the totem pole from Summitview School property.

This pole stood as a significant reminder of our heritage. Long before Peter Stouffer arrived to stake a claim in this area, the Wendat Huron people inhabited this land.

There has been much evidence found of their presence.

As a graduate of both elementary and secondary school at Summitview, I am deeply disappointed that the unique symbol of this area, this beautifully created visual reminder has been taken from our community.

Upon returning to Orangeville, a town employee guided us on a tour of the stump carvings Orangeville is so proud of. We only saw a few, about 20, as she explained why and how they were done.

Trees had been dying and sponsors came forward to pay to have artists create this worthwhile endeavour.

She very proudly showed us eagles, people to be remembered, a dragon and wizard and then a totem pole! It

Leisure centre closed until Nov. 4 SIMON MARTIN smartin@yrmg.com The swimming pool in Stouffville will be ready soon, but local residents will just have to wait a little bit longer. The Whitchurch-Stouffville Leisure Centre and Public Library expansion is moving along, but the next phase requires complete closure of the building.

The Leisure Centre, including fitness, is closed and is scheduled to reopen Saturday, Nov. 4, for swim lessons.

The pool has been closed at the facility since Aug. 28 for renovations.

The total cost of the project stands at $15 million.

Diamond Schmitt was hired for the project at $947,150.

The leisure centre construction was originally slated to be completed by December, but the library won’t return to its home at the centre until February 2018.

The previous edition of town council spent much of its last year in office, 2013-14, putting a plan in place for the expansion of the Stouffville Memorial Park building, which included a two-storey library, second indoor pool and dedicated area for the 55+ Club for seniors.

The cost was pegged at $28 million.

In July of 2015, the new council approved a revised plan that did not include a second indoor pool or area dedicated to the seniors. The budget was also slashed to $12,825,000.

These are one of the items we occasionally make and sell at the meat department, and it came up in one of our staff meetings how we’d never featured them, so we gave it a go this summer and it was a wild success. I took one home and loved it, as did many of our customers, but perhaps nobody enjoyed it as much as our bakery manager, Andrea. In fact, I don’t think I can accurately summarize her feelings, so I’ll just copy her text: “I just read the ad and I just tried smoked chicken for the first time. I made it in a sandwich: Portuguese kaiser with spicy cherry red pepper jelly, grilled artichokes, smoked chicken and melty brie…I don’t want to tell you how good this sandwich makes me feel. You realize there is now even less of a chance I will ever be a size four. This [expletive] chicken is so good.”

I may not get that emotional but these chickens are quite superb, they’re slightly salty, permeated with smokiness and ultra juicy. You can go the Andrea route and make a sandwich, but these are also amazing torn up in a salad, or pasta or just warmed as is OFF with your favourite chutney. Reg. $15.99 each

Not going to beat around the bush, we have the reputation of being an expensive store, don’t think I’m surprising anybody when I say that. A lot of reason behind that is that once we find quality, we buy it and don’t flinch over the price. I think the avocados we sell are the perfect example of that. We usually sell them between $3.49 and $3.99 which is definitely on the higher end. You can go to other stores and get a bag of five avocados for a similar price. However, they are miniscule, they ripen in the blink of an eye as they’ve been sitting in storage for goodness knows how long, they are grainy inside, frankly they’re terrible. Pickpockets are everywhere, even in little Stouffville I fully expect one sneaky purse-snatcher was smiling when caught on candid camera.

But that smile will surely turn upside down when arresting police do a followup photo.

Modern technology was definitely at work when a complete stranger extracted wife Jean’s wallet from her handbag while she, good-naturedly, was attempting to assist him with obtaining a top-shelf grocery item at Metro.

Not in Stouffville, quiet little Stouffville our Toronto neighbours may say.

Yes, in Stouffville, the not-so-quiet little Stouffville we can assuredly reply.

It was a Wednesday about 2:30 p.m. when Jean and I parted company on the pretext of her doing some mid-week shopping.

At the same time she could also enjoy an opportunity to converse with a few longtime friends.

On this occasion, one individual with whom she conversed, proved all too friendly. He stole her purse.

It wasn’t until she approached a store cashier and reached for her wallet she discovered it was gone.

So where was it? A search up and down the aisles; the interior of our car and the entire parking lot proved futile. Then she remembered -

Gone, in addition to two Visa cards were all things most women carry in purses - a driver’s license; a birth certificate; a senior’s certificate; a health card; family photos and more. She was upset.

However, after recovering sufficiently from the shock, she had the presence of mind to notify Visa. But too late. The goon had already cashed in both cards, one at Shopper’s Drug Mart and the other at the liquor store. The total amount exceeded $600. In doing so he proved his professionalism at the game by keeping all purchases below the $100 debit card limit.

But this wasn’t enough.

He later attempted to withdraw additional funds from a nearby ATM machine.

However, without a proper acceptance code, this endeavour was refused.

For us, a flurry of activity followed, first a trip to Shoppers where a purchase slip was recovered. Then to the LCBO where a vigilant cashier recalled all that had transpired plus an accurate description of the offender.

Then to Scotiabank for additional advice. And last but not least, a report to police.

In every instance, co-operation was above and beyond anything we could have anticipated. Managers and staff at each of the above locations set aside other responsibilities and offered assistance. A Visa official calmed our nerves by promising all illicit withdrawals would be compensated. And an officer with the York Regional fraud squad, based out of Markham, called our home voicing concern and requesting additional information.

But the best was yet to come.

Two evenings later a gentleman stood at our door.

"I believe this belongs to you," he said to Jean, handing her a purse. "It’s a little wet but items inside seem OK." Overjoyed, an immediate bear-hug could deservedly have followed. But with me looking over her shoulder she decided to suppress this passion.

New Catholic high school to cost more than $33M SIMON MARTIN smartin@yrmg.com Stouffville District Secondary School has been the only high school in Whitchurch-Stouffville for years, but it appears that is coming to an end.

Oak Ridges-Markham MPP Helena Jaczek was on hand Oct. 20 on Ninth Line, across the road from Timber Creek, to announce the location as the proposed site for a kindergarten to Grade 12 Catholic school. The school is planned to open in September 2019.

This new school will accommodate 1,400 students and comes in response to population growth in Whitchurch Stouffville. It

will include three day care rooms.

"Our government continues to make important investments in the future of our students across our province and right here in Oak Ridges-Markham," Jaczek said.

Mayor Justin Altmann was on hand for the announcement and was pleased at the prospect of a new high school "The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville is proud that the Province of Ontario is making these important education investments for the future of our students and our community," he said. "This is an exciting time and a great start to the school year."

The new school in Stouffville will cost more than $33 million, plus an additional $1.5 million to support the child care rooms.

The York Catholic District School Board has three elementary schools in Stouffville - St. Brigid, St. Mark and St. Brendan.

"We are truly delighted to add a new Catholic school to the growing Stouffville community. This has been made possible thanks to the work of many people, working together as partners," director of education Patricia Preston said. "We owe our gratitude to the Ministry of Education, MPP Helena Jaczek, Stouffville parents, our trustees and planning department."

Actually it was a lot of jokes.

"It was great. I think we had a nice start for the first time we’ve tried to run a festival like that," said Ashley Chappell, cultural facility supervisor at the Lebovic Centre for Arts and Entertainment - 19 on the Park.

She is talking about Stouffville’s First Comedy Festival, which took place Oct. 20 and 21.

"We really had some top quality artists," she said. "It seemed like Stouffville really enjoyed themselves."

The festival kicked off Oct. 20 with My Big Fat German Puppet Show and continued Saturday with a workshop called Physical Comedy Masterclass, led by James Crocker, who talked about when, why and how to be funny. Saturday night featured Comedy in Motion Dinner Theatre with Bob Cates, and wrapped up with K Trevor Wilson from Letterkenny.

Chappell said they had wanted to do a new festival, but were not sure what kind.

Upgrades proposed for Stouffville Cemetery SIMON MARTIN smartin@yrmg.com The Whitchurch-Stouffville Cemetery is a landmark at the east end of town. It is also a landmark in need of some revitalization, according to longtime Stouffville resident Peggy Topping ,who made a presentation to council about the cemetery Oct. 24.

At the age of 91, Topping is working hard to get the town to make some improvements to the cemetery.

Among her concerns was the front entrance on 10th Line, with its broken gate, the Williamson Memorial Chapel in need of a facelift, a revitalization of the columbarium area and a more formal entrance at the north entrance/exit.

"These are jobs that need to be done. It is our turn now. We really can do better," she said.

"Our cemetery should reflect the pride of our community. This is the place where we come to remember our heritage, history and local heroes."

Topping offered some simple

solutions for council to consider, including a new entrance on 10th with new fencing and stone pillars. She suggested the town remove and replace overgrown shrubs at the chapel, powerwash the steps, paint railings and the chapel door and repair the walkway. At the columbarium, Topping said the town should consider new walkways and find alternatives to poured concrete.

As for the north entrance, a formal entrance would announce the point of entering or leaving the grounds on Cemetery Lane.

Topping even came to council with rough cost estimates of what repairs might cost. The new gates were tabbed at $20,000 each, while new front fencing was estimated at $7,500.

The town said the request would be considered as part of the 2018 budget process.

"This is an unbelievable initiative you have done," Ward 6 Coun.

Rob Hargrave said. "It is a beautiful peaceful spot in our town."

Stouffville pals capture slo-pitch silver at Huntsman Games JOHN CUDMORE jcudmore@yrmg.com For neighbours Bryan Emery and Ron Thompson, catching silver medals may not be a home run.

On the other hand, there certainly is no error in finishing second.

The Stouffville friends returned last week from the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah with glitter in their gloves from slo-pitch age group tournaments as members of Mississauga Legends teams.

"We played fairly well until the final game," said Emery, who plays shortstop

for the Legends 75 squad which lost in the 75-and-over final against a British Columbia team. "Our bats went dead. It’s nice to win a medal but always better to win gold."

The Legends 75 team posted a 5-2 overall record in a field of 25 teams from North and South America. Thompson, 66, roamed the outfield for the Legends 65 squad in a 40-team tournament.

For Thompson, an outfielder, it was the 11th time he has competed at the event.

He participated in two divisions, winning silver in an over-65 triple-A division for the Mississauga-based Legends 65

squad.

"It’s still a lot of fun," said Thompson, whose season consists of about 80 games in leagues in Unionville and Scarborough, in addition to tournaments. "It’s basically pushing the blood through the veins and about being healthy."

The multi-sport event attracted more than 10,000 athletes over the age of 50 years.

Emery intends to play in the 2018 Games.

"I hope so, health permitting," said Emery, who plays in an over-30 league in Markham. "At 80 next year, I’ve got to say I’ll play as long as my body holds up."

Mike Downie Hundreds of people gathered at the Richmond Hill Centre for Performing Arts this past weekend in an emotional tribute to the late musician Gord Downie and to honour the Secret Path story of a 12-year-old Indigenous boy, Chanie Wenjack.

Downie, the Tragically Hip frontman who passed away Oct. 17, was an iconic Canadian musician, but he was never really comfortable with what it meant to be a Canadian, his brother Mike Downie told the gath-

ering Oct. 22. Gord did not like the way Canada’s national identity ignores mistreatment of Indigenous populations, instead "gets crunched down into hockey sticks and coffee cups," Mike said to about 600 attendees at a special film screening this past weekend.

It’s why the musician made his famous "call to action" at a concert in Kingston, Mike said, and why he worked to spread the word with the Secret Path project.

The Secret Path film pays tribute to Chanie Wenjack, who died after fleeing a residential school in the 1960s, and to the many other residential school kids who nev-

er got a chance to share their story. It was an emotional event for many at Sunday’s sold-out event.

Jeremy Hoyle, who performed acoustic version of Downie’s "The Stranger" immediately following the film screening, described it as "the most emotionally challenging performance I’ve ever done. Right before I walked out (on stage) I saw the image of Chanie at the end of the Secret Path film.

Instead of making me sad, it filled me with purpose."

Joel Clements, a Richmond Hill resident and organizer of the event, was brought to tears listening to feedback from attendees and to keynote speaker Dr.

Shirley Williams, professor emeritus at Trent University, as she described her own experience at an Indian Residential School. Members of the Wenjak family also took part in the evening, some, like Chanie’s nephew Greg Munroe, traveing from as far away as Pond Inlet, Nunavut.

After the event, a vigil was held outside the Yonge Street theatre with candles, a smudging ceremony and Indigenous performances.

Born July 6, 1926 in Saint John, NB, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Annie Totten. Predeceased by her husband Roy (2012). She was a devoted mother to Clairann (Anthony Schwager) of Cambridge and Barry of Guelph.

Do you believe in ghosts?

5 ’haunted’ sites that might convince you ALI RAZA aliraza@yrmg.com Whether you believe in ghosts or not, it’s a fun and scary - thought to entertain around Halloween.

Paranormal investigator Lynda Quirino from the Georgina Paranormal Society says there are ghosts and spirits haunting various parts of York Region, some she and her team have witnessed.

We gathered a list of five sites in York Region that are allegedly haunted and here they are:

Sharon Temple (East Gwillimbury) The Sharon Temple was built in 1832 and is a designated National Historic Site of Canada.

Though it’s not technically haunted, people have re-

ported hearing sounds of a large feast being prepared, music and footsteps. Quirino calls a "residual" haunting, imprinted in the character of the building. "It was a large gathering place, a lot of things happened there," she said. "It’s an energetic imprint."

Eaton Hall (King) The house once belonged to Lady Eaton, wife of department store magnate John Craig Eaton, and it is believed that she still roams the grounds with other ghosts.

It was built in 1938 and Quirino has had her own strange encounters there.

"It had a really charged atmosphere," she said. "I knocked on the door of a little room, and someone said ’Hey!’ but no one was in the house with me."

Heintzman House (Thornhill) Built around 1817, it’s one of the oldest homes in the Greater Toronto Area.

Author John Robert Colombo writes in Mysteries of Ontario that it’s haunted by Colonel Cruikshank, the first owner of the property. "This tall, slightly bent man wearing a leather jerkin appeared in the upper hall overlooking the foyer. His expression was one of anger, as though he resented being disturbed by this noisy group of strangers occupying his home," Colombo writes.

Stephen Leacock Theatre (Georgina) Quirino says Stephen Leacock may haunt his theatre. She said people have reported feeling things and in specific cases, an unknown spirit

would steal the towels in the female dressing rooms. "The dressing room would be locked, no one would be there, and women reported their towel missing after they showered," Quirino said.

Could the ghost of Stephen Leacock be playing a prank? Maybe, she says.

Henry Harrison House (Newmarket) Known as the Grey Goat Pub today, the Henry Harrison House was built in 1865. The owners of the pub are seeking to organize ghost tours after employees and visitors reported seeing and hearing things, Quirino said.

It is believed that the pub is haunted by a ghost who makes sounds in the basement, slams doors and appears as an outline of an elderly lady.
