Out of the frying pan, out of the fire and thankfully back home. Former Stouffville resident and WhiStle Radio founder Jim Priebe evacuated his Alberta work site with several hundred other workers as the Fort McMurray wildfire grew out of control.

The former candidate for WhitchurchStouffville council had been working in the area for the past three and a half years. He worked an hour south of Fort McMurray near the town of Anzac on an oil sands project. “Think of the smoggiest day you can imagine, and it’s a hundred times that in terms of air quality and debris,” Priebe said. “The fire spread so quickly, it’s mind-boggling.”

On occasion he went to Fort McMurray, but the last time he was there it was the beginning of the massive wildfire that soon engulfed the region. “There were a lot of police cars around shutting off access to different roads,” he said. “The air quality was just horrid, you could really See TENSE, page 38.
