Newlyweds Tripti Ninan and Ryan Perera are Millennials and purchased their first home in Toronto just under a year ago.

Based on their combined income and the down payment they were able to come up with, the couple bought a 700-square-foot, onebedroom-plus-den condo unit in Toronto’s west end near a subway station.

“We knew our first step would be a condo. We wanted to start small and we wanted something low maintenance,” said Ninan. “And for us, location was key because we wanted to be close to transit. I did not want ridiculous commutes anymore.”

Ninan, a 30-year-old marketing professional who works downtown, and 27-year-old Perera, an aerospace engineer whose office is near Pearson Airport, understood sacrifices were required to make their dream a reality.

About five years ago, they both started setting aside money for their wedding and future home purchase.

“We were actually planning for quite a few years and saving up,” said Perera. “We saved for both our wedding and our property even before we knew what kind of place we wanted and how big the wedding would be.”

Ninan, who also paid her own way through college and university, said she was lucky to have taken a few financial courses and had a good understanding of what was involved in getting into the Toronto real estate market.

It also helped that both Ninan and Perera’s parents have purchased a condo in the last five years and they were actively involved in helping their parents navigate the experience.

“We took what we learned from our parents and applied it when the time came to buy a condo,” she said.

The couple sacrificed having a second vehicle to save more money and followed the guidance of their financial advisor, Darlene Wang, who advised them about maximizing their investments and the importance of

“We don’t go on crazy shopping sprees at all and we’re smart with our purchases; no impulse buying,” Perera said. “But we’re still enjoying life. Short-term sacrifices mean long-term gains,” added Ninan.

In the next four or five years, the couple said, they’ll likely sell their condo and get a house. Depending on what they want and their needs, they did admit they’d consider moving outside Toronto proper.

••••• Getting into the Toronto real estate market isn’t impossible for Millennials (those ages 18 to 35), but it’s no walk in the park.

Purchasing a property in the city’s hot market requires two things: preparation and the willing-

ness to compromise.

For the last 16 years, financial advisor Wang has helped scores of young adults to get their finances in order so they can buy their first home in Toronto.

“You have to be realistic in terms of what you want and what you can get. If you have an ego, you can’t play this game,” said Wang, who admitted the likelihood of Millennials purchasing a detached home in the city as their first property is slim.

According to a recent report

by Altus Group for the Building Industry and Land Development Association, the average price for a newer detached home in the GTA was $1.05 million, which is more than double what it cost a decade ago and 21 per cent higher than just over a year ago.

“An actual standalone home in

the GTA will be near impossible unless you have two steady incomes over $100,000,” Wang explained.

“Millennials have to start with a condo to build equity, a townhouse, or a small bungalow, or (purchase) not in the GTA.” To help her clients get ready to get into the Toronto market, Wang, who works for Investors Group, helps future homebuyers sort out their priorities and come up with a plan of action to maximize their finances in a set time frame.

Getting “house ready” as she put it requires a change of mindset, a new way of living.

“You need to sacrifice more than ever and make smart decisions,” said Wang, adding understanding what’s involved in reaching your goals helps avoid disappointment.

Wang said Millennials aren’t usu-

ally thinking about getting their finances in order and saving up for a down payment on a property.

“In their head it’s ‘pay back me’ time,” she said, noting most Millennials in the 18 to 30 age range are in school or just finishing up their first post-secondary degree or diploma, usually carry school debt, have no kids, and want to travel and party.

Under her guidance, Wang has helped her clients to get “house ready” by tracking their spending, making small adjustments to their budget, investing wisely, and being realistic about vacations and big purchases.

“Incomes have nowhere near increased the way real estate has increased. You must learn to do more with less,” she said.

Real estate broker Frank Leo, who has been serving clients in Toronto and the GTA for 28 years, said for Millennials the biggest thing is the pressure of being “squeezed out of the market.”

Leo, of RE/MAX West Realty Ltd., advises young buyers to avoid jumping into the market before doing their research, specifically knowing exactly what they want and can afford.

Dump truck crash on Bloomington leaves driver in critical condition

It happened near Bloomington Road and the Tenth Line, just north of Stouffville.

Police say a vehicle was travelling eastbound and attempting to pass when it struck a dump truck heading westbound.

Put yourself in the confused shoes of a refugee to Canada

I

’m pro refugee.

So if you’re in the camp that likes to write nasty stuff on Facebook about people from Syria, Iraq, Somalia, Kosovo and other inhospitable places on this planet, you may want to turn the page, perhaps after burning it.

I know your arguments: • We should spend our dollars helping “real Canadians”.

• They’re “all terrorists”.

• “Let them look after themselves back home”.

• “Stephen Harper wouldn’t have let this happen in my Canada.”

I just don’t happen to agree with them.

But continue to spout your views, especially on social media, where you may assume wrongly that you are anonymous. Please.

It’s a free country.

And one that must be mighty confusing to any newcomer, be they escaping a deadly civil war or just visiting for a couple of weeks from across the pond.

Take our language. Take it.

Consider the number of English words that sound the same, but have multiple spellings as well as definitions.

Think bare. Or maybe it’s bear? Kernel and colonel.

Put yourself in the shoes of a new Canadian.

Then there are those fourlettered words that have steadily crept into the daily dialogue of so many of us. I doubt they’re teaching any of those in ESL classes.

Learning to drive in Canada? Those posted speed limits, stop signs and red lights that driving instructors and Ministry of Transportation examiners all speak of?

They mean nothing.

Just mere suggestions to drivers in the real world, if suburban Stouffville is any kind of example.

Roundabout protocol? I’m not even venturing there. The broken glass and skid marks

Ontario isn’t New Orleans or Key West.

Yet. But our liquor laws have certainly relaxed aplenty in the past 25 years.

It wasn’t that long ago, liquor stores were closed on Sundays. You couldn’t buy a cold one at a sporting event or the theatre. Liquor stores were bland institutions. You filled out a form with the code for your favourite potent potable and got in line like you were at Service Ontario.

It was a cross between Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi and Consumers Distributing, for those of you old enough to remember either.

Now, you can buy wine in some supermarkets. Drink beer in Stouffville Memorial Park – during a licensed event.

Wineries have sprouted up in the countryside surrounding Stouffville.

Alcoholic beverages are generally forbidden in Islam.

So I wonder what our Muslim friends make of our liberal liquor laws.

Our questionable driving skills. And our complicated language and its nuances.

Or the trail of tall boy cans that often litter our downtown core the morning after the night before.

The dance of 65 years of marriage

S

wing and sway with Gord and Kay. For Stouffvillle’s Gord and Kay Wagg, dancing’s been a primary activity through 65 years of married life.

They’ll celebrate this marriage milestone with an ‘open house’ at the Royal Canadian Legion Saturday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. They hosted a dance last Saturday at the same site with dozens of friends attending.

“I had to coax him off the beach into the water,” Kay jokes while recalling how their long-standing partnership evolved more than six decades ago.

Kay, 90, was a member of a “dancing family” while Gord, now 92, was new to the game. He caught on quickly, Kay says, allowing the two to continue this diversion all these years.

They cover the dance circuit two and sometimes three nights a week including stops in Port Perry, Whitby, Holland Landing, Manilla, Little Britain and Newmarket.

“I’m pretty high mileage,” he says.

Born in the small community of Mongolia, just south of Stouffville, Gord is one of seven in the family of Foster and Mary (Snowball) Wagg. Two of three brothers survive: Murray of Stouffville; Grant of Bobcaygeon and one of four sisters, Ruth Robinson of Markham. A brother Ken and three sisters, Ethel Lundy; Annie Brillinger and Edna Carruthers are deceased.

Gord received his elementary education at four different schools – Mongolia, Victoria Square, Bloomington and Stouffville.

At age 15 he went out to work, employed as a hired farm hand in Stouffville. In 1950, he took over the prop-

Roaming Around with Jim Thomas erty, in east-end Stouffville where the Northern Gate community now sits, and became one of the most successful dairy farmers in what was then York County.

His purebred Holstein herd numbered as many as 70 with eager buyers coming from as far distant as the United States and across Ontario. The property was commonly known as Wengay Farm, named after daughters Wendy (Machesney) of Leaskdale and Gayle (LeDuca) of Stouffville.

Wife Kay (Hamilton) grew up on a farm at Brougham, one of four in the family of Fred and Cora Hamilton. A sister, Beula Duncan, resides in Courtice, near Oshawa. Two brothers, John and Ron Hamilton are deceased.

She attended Brougham public school and Pickering High.

“I was brought up a dancer,” Kay remembers.

Her father was a ‘caller’ when dances were held regularly at the Brougham community hall and in local homes. “Gord learned to like it,” she says.

Following their marriage June 9, 1951 in Brougham United Church, they left on a one-week honeymoon to Niagara Falls and points north, returning to live on the Stouffville farm until their present home was

completed.

Never one to be idle, Gord later operated a mobile grain grinder at Stouffville’s Master Feeds and then worked at Chesebrough Ponds in Markham where Kay was also an employee. Previously, she served on the staff of Imperial Oil Ltd., Toronto and at General Motors in Oshawa.

For close to 20 years she was the engaging receptionist at Stouffville Cleaners. A skilled seamstress, she makes her own dance skirts and tops. She also creates attractive shirts for Gord. Having grown up on a farm, Kay was familiar with the operation of a tractor. She also knew all about milking cows by hand.

“Only once did we ever have to do that here,” says Gord. “This was in 1954 when we lost power during Hurricane Hazel.”

The Wagg family has a long association with the Masonic Order. Gord joined Stouffville’s Richardson Lodge in 1950, advancing through the chairs to the office of master in 1972 and grand steward in 1980.

While dancing remains a favourite past-time, Gord honestly admits he’s no longer able to do-see-do like years ago. However, he still teams up with wife Kay and floats around the floor during round dances and, if need be, sits back and enjoys the music. He knows the majority of circuit musicians personally.

But don’t think for a moment this extra-curricular activity occupies all their time. They’re justly proud of daughters Gayle and Wendy; their four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, “the light of our lives,” they both agree.

What I do with this is lay it out on a plate that’s a bit warm, drizzle it with good olive oil and balsamic freshly-ground These are one of my top-two fave Mangoes, and the season for them pepper and sea salt, (and take it with me to another room so I is just underway. We bought size 9’s this week, so don’t have to share…) and perhaps make a bit of horseradish they are a good size, and they are ripening nicely aioli as a condiment. It’s darn good! Both these items will be for your eating pleasure.

When police showed up at her door at 4 a.m., Charmaine Mueller was shocked, sure she must have done something wrong, but unsure what.

“Never in a million years did I think they were going to tell me what they did,” the former Stouffville resident explained, sipping her tea, wind rustling her curly locks.

The news York Regional Police officers shared was dark enough to break any mother’s heart.

Her “beautiful” daughter, Lauren, 25, had died after her pick-up truck left the road near the bend at Old Yonge Street and Mount Albert Road in East Gwillimbury, just before 11 p.m. on May 29.

Although unable yet to speak about the details of Lauren’s crash — only days clear of the Celebration of Life where 200 people gathered to remember her — Charmaine wanted to open up about the kind of person Lauren was — a nurturing, fun-loving, big-hearted soul.

Moved to Stouffville, Newmarket Lauren was born at St. Michael’s Hospital in 1990 and grew up in Scarborough with her older brother, Garrett, before moving to York Region in the early 2000s; first living in Stouffville before settling in Newmarket. As a baby, Charmaine said she remembers Lauren growing frustrated, if she went too long getting mom’s cuddles.

“I remember, she’d grow fussy, so I’d pick her up and put her on my hip and do my housework with one hand,” Charmaine reminisced. “She would always put her cheek against mine. She wanted love and I wanted to give it to her. It made me so happy.”

Prior to moving to Newmarket, Charmaine recalled her daughter shocking everyone present at one latenight gathering with talents no one ever knew existed.

“We were sitting around playing guitar, we were laughing and singing and playing, but Lauren was hesitant to join in. She didn’t know anyone too well, but she had a guitar her daddy had given her,” she said. “She See CRASH, page 31.

Friendly deer visits back yard, Main St.

Doe, a deer, a female deer … was spotted in the back yard of a Main Street resident in Stouffville last week.

Nancy Constable was in her back yard Wednesday sending a text message to her friend, when suddenly she looked up and saw a deer. Though the deer’s gender was unknown, Constable quickly shot some photos as it wandered around her yard and quickly left.

“I don’t know how it ended up in my

back yard,” Constable said. “Apparently it was over on Millard Street and it may have come through, but where it originally came from I have no idea.”

Just 10 feet away from Constable, the deer didn’t appear threatened. Stouffville Sun-Tribune readers spotted the deer walking by the newspaper’s office on Main Street, too.

“We’ve seen foxes, but never a deer,” Constable said. “It might be construction that’s causing them to come into the neighbourhood, I’m not sure.”

York Regional Police are investigating a suspicious person incident that occurred in the area of Weldon Road and Main Street on Monday around 6:30 p.m.

A resident reported to police that a white man, 5-foot-10, age 20 to 30, with a medium build, glasses, short spiky hair, wearing black shorts, a T-shirt and running shoes, holding a maroon camera bag was taking pictures of her children playing in the driveway.

The resident also posted information of the incident on Facebook.

“I was in the garage getting my bike out when my seven-year-old daughter came in to tell me there was a strange man that had just come up to them and without a word started taking pictures of her and my two sons,” the woman posted on Facebook.

She and her husband pursued the man but were unsuccessful. The incident happened in 30 to 40 seconds according to her post.

“I am sick thinking that some weirdo is out there with pictures of my kids,” she wrote.

“Please keep an eye out so this doesn’t happen to your kids.”

YRP confirmed the incident with The SunTribune on Wednesday and said the investigation is still ongoing.

“We’re looking to speak to this individual and see what he was doing and what was going on there,” said Const. Laura Nicolle.

Police appeal for anyone to come forward with any information. They also appeal for the suspect to come forward.

“If they were there for a legitimate reason and it’s not what it sounds like, we encourage them to come forward,” Nicolle said.

Police ask anyone with video surveillance in the area to check for an individual matching the description.

Massive fish deaths at lake ‘natural’

Musselman’s Lake, on the Ninth Line north of Stouffville, was peaceful Tuesday morning. Residents reported a large number of fish deaths.

Experts say the event is natural.

“There are several potential causes for fish die-offs,” Wegman said, “including winter kill and stress factors associated with major weather changes, especially during the spring spawning period.”

Wegman stressed in agreement with MLRA that “there is no real health hazard associated with most fish die-offs.”

There was no evidence of a spill causing the deaths.

Musselman’s Lake Residents Association on Tuesday released an article on its website further explaining the rise in dead fish in the lake is a “natural occurrence.”

In the article, MLRA explains the last die-off occurred in 2009. They offer studies made by Hutchinson Environmental Sciences available for download.

“This year we have seen very little algae so far, but a much greater bounty of weeds coming to the surface,” the MLRA article says. “We have found that on years where the ice comes off early and the weeds can get established that we do not get an early algae bloom.”

As fish eat algae, the lack of a bloom indicates a lack of food. The article explains most of the fish are of breeding size and that unusual warm weather before mating season makes the fish susceptible to bacterial infections.

“This is a completely natural occurrence and no cause for alarm,” the article states.

Ninety-five per cent of the fish were black crappie, a common native species in Ontario but not a native species in Musselman’s Lake.

MNRF and MLRA ask landowners around the lake to clean up dead fish that wash up onshore by either burying them or double-bagging for municipal garbage pick-up.

Residents reported “thousands” of dead fish littered across Musselman’s Lake, but the Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry (MNRF) and Musselman’s Lake Residents Association (MLRA) stress there is no cause for concern as the process is “natural.”

The Ninth Line lake isWhitchurchStouffville’s largest and is home to several residents who live along the waterfront. One resident who refused to give his full name told The Sun-Tribune that he’d “never seen this many dead fish up here”.

The resident, Ken, lives at Musselman’s Lake and doesn’t know why it’s happening.

“On Wednesday there were a couple, Thursday a couple hundred,

“The air smells so bad up here right now, it’s terrible.”

Wendy’s coming to town – the restaurant that is.

The new location for Wendy’s is the old Country Style at 5886 Main St. in the Giant Tiger Plaza.

The Country Style recently closed and a new sign now sits at the future location of the popular burger joint.

It’ll be the first Wendy’s location in

An official date has not been announced as the sign only reads “coming soon”.

Is there such a thing as too much choice?

That’s for Stouffvillians and out-of-town visitors to decide at this year’s Food Truck Frenzy, the second annual event of its kind in Stouffville.

Main Street between Park Drive and Market Street will be packed with 19 food trucks hailing from across the GTA on four dates throughout the summer. Thursday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. on June 23, July 21, Sept. 8 and Oct. 6, residents and visitors can enjoy a wide selection of delicious food from trucks and local vendors who will set up booths and tents to promote their businesses.

The events are organized by the town with sponsorship from Houston Ford on Main Street.

“Last year the two events were very popular,” said town manager of culture Joan Crosbie. “Probably in the region of 4,000 people per day.”

4,000 people per day There will be 19 food trucks at each event this year.

Each event will offer different food trucks as well as familiar ones that will be present throughout the series.

Food trucks include Wickedly Sinful, Born2Eat, Mustache Burger, Dolcella Gelato, Meat Ventures, Le Novela, Wanna Burger, Peymski Food Truck, Stuttering John’s Smokehouse, Mister Treats, Smokinstein, Fresh Food Truck, Fully Loaded TO, Buster’s Sea Cove, Cil’s

Place, The Sandwich Stop, Kickass Donut Co., Urban Smoke, Gourmet Gringos, Sharrkeys and the Great Canadian Food Truck.

Local businesses Belfiore and The Tipsy Cow will have tents set up offering their items.

Live music Bands will perform on event days. The first event on June 23 will feature local band Full Moon perform their pop-rock sound from 5 to 8 p.m.

DJ service is on between sets and street entertainment will be performed by local dance group MOTUS O. The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville first decided to hold the food truck events to invite locals and outsiders to the downtown core.

“If you look around in neighbouring communities, like Markham, they’ve had a food truck event, and it’s very popular,” Crosbie said. “So it can bring some vibrancy to the downtown core, as well as bring people outside.”

The family-friendly event will serve no alcohol. As for all the garbage that’s inevitable with so many food trucks and so many visitors, Crosbie said there’s nothing to worry about.

“We have extra garbage cans and picnic tables set up in Civic Square,” she said. “Town staff are doing extra duty to make sure at the end of the event it’s spotless.”

“Our guys work hard to keep it nice and clean,” Crosbie added.

It’s a first for this town.

Whitchurch-Stouffville council has approved paid permit parking in parts of its downtown lots and residential areas.

The motion came after staff recommended the new parking permit system in a report that outlined updated fees associated with parking as well as a new online payment system.

The town currently owns 247 parking spots in the downtown area.

Staff informed council that costs of parking would be similar to Aurora.

Proposed fees for residential areas include $10 for one-day parking, $25 for three days and $20 for weekend parking.

Proposed fees for downtown commercial parking include $30 for one week, $75 for one month, $150 for three months and $200 for six months.

Town staff described the program as a “pilot” program that would make way for an online ticketing program.

“I’m not crazy about the fees,” Councillor Rick Upton said. “But you (staff) are the experts.”

Lyme Disease FIGHT THE BITE!

What is Lyme disease?

Lyme disease is an illness caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria that is spread through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick (deer tick). Lyme disease does not spread from human to human.

What are the symptoms?

A circular rash referred to as a bull’s-eye rash could be one of the earliest symptoms of an infection. If you develop a bull’s-eye rash, fever, chills or extreme fatigue or feel like you have the flu, see your health care provider.

Be sure to tell them if you have been active outdoors. If left untreated, Lyme disease could lead to more serious symptoms affecting the central nervous system, brain or heart.

Treating Lyme disease Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics. Getting treatment in the early stages of the disease is critical for full recovery.

What are ticks?

Health will continue to conduct tick dragging at various locations across York Region’s nine towns and cities.

While the risk is low, it is possible to be infected with Lyme disease from the bite of a blacklegged tick almost anywhere in Ontario.

Other established blacklegged tick populations and Lyme disease endemic areas include parts of British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Northeast and upper Midwest United States and central Europe.

Protect yourself and your family It is important to protect yourself each time you are in a wooded or brushy area. Follow these simple tips to protect yourself: • Wear long pants and long-sleeved tops that are light-coloured to help spot ticks • Tuck your pants into your socks • Use an insect repellent containing DEET and apply according to manufacturer’s directions • Search your body for ticks

Ticks are small bugs, the size of a sesame seed, which feed off the blood of animals and humans. They are generally active through the spring, summer and fall. They can be found on tall grasses and bushes and can attach themselves to people or animals. Ticks do not fly and move slowly. Most tick bites are painless. Ticks feed slowly and will attach themselves for 24 to 72 hours.

They are most likely to spread infection after being attached for 24 hours or more. Not all ticks are infected with the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, therefore, not all tick bites will spread Lyme disease.

• Pay special attention to the groin, scalp, underarms and back

Where are blacklegged ticks found?

• Place the tick in a moistened paper towel and put in a screw-top container such as a plastic pill bottle or a plastic sealable baggie

The risk of Lyme disease is usually much greater in tick endemic areas because the probability of bites from infected ticks is much greater.

In Ontario, blacklegged ticks are more commonly found in areas along the north shores of Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.

Stouffville’s Thesan Ramanan is off to Lakehead University in July after being accepted into SHAD, a national program designed to help school students achieve their potential.

Currently a Grade 11 student at Bayview Secondary School, Ramanan will join 700 other students across the country participating in the program at 12 host universities.

SHAD was founded in 1980. It immerses students in a month-long program focused on developing skills in academia, networking

and leadership.

The program focuses on STEAM: science, technology, engineering, arts and math. After the month, students are connected with a network of young minds across the country including 30 Rhodes Scholars.

Students required top academic achievement and demonstrated leadership skills.

They will interact with renowned university faculty and corporate leaders.

Supporters needn’t fear; Health Minister Jane Philpott is still a Liberal.

The confusion arose shortly after Philpott opened her new office on 6060 Main St., (also office of former Markham-Stouffville MP Paul Calandra).

Philpott’s newsletter referred to her as “Hon. Jane Philpott, MP, PC”, so some residents confused her Privy Council designation listed as “PC” as a new party affiliation with the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, also shortened as PC Party.

Philpott’s office, which received calls after the newsletter was mailed out, has confirmed that she remains a member of the federal

Liberal Party, not of the provincial Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario.

Cabinet ministers are also members of the Privy Council Office, which offers advice and support to the Prime Minister and coordination between different departments and agencies in the federal government.

“By being a member of the cabinet, they also become members of the Privy Council,” said press secretary of the office of the minister of health Andrew MacKendrick.

“MPs can’t use party logos and emblems in their signs, we wouldn’t be able to put a Liberal L or the logo anyway,” he added.

Nevertheless, Philpott would not be able to change parties from the federal level down to the provincial level unless elected.

eventually came in and played and the voice that came out of her! She was great, she lit up the entire room. We just couldn’t believe how talented she was.”

The guitar circle would not be the last time Lauren wowed people with her voice, making everyone cry with renditions of Jewel’s Who Will Save Your Soul and her mother’s favourite song, At Last, by Etta James, at Charmaine’s birthday last year.

“She got up on stage in front of everyone and just started singing. No one could believe it. No one knew about her talent, I knew, but no one else did,” she said. “She loved singing and dancing and being crazy and silly. We used to laugh so much together. Always sending texts to one another to make the other giggle.”

Charmaine recounted how her daughter’s vocal abilities inspired her own attempts, recalling the hours she spent learning Hush Little Baby, before, one night, sitting on Lauren’s bedside and breaking out into the lullaby.

“She just said to me, ‘Oh, mommy’,” Charmaine added, tears welling up in her eyes.

After graduating from Huron Heights Secondary School, excelling in two very different pastimes — car mechanics and dance — Lauren held down a number of jobs, including with K.J. Beamish as a “flag girl” and preparing food and making orders at Nature’s Emporium.

“She loved to cook and took great care of her home, inside and out,” she said. “She wanted to have children so badly.”

At her Celebration of Life, her friends

remarked about one particularly fond memory of Lauren at work when she dumped her lunch on the road to capture and then release a mouse deep into a nearby field to ensure its survival, also remarking on her “huge heart” and the sparkle in her eye.

“She was a huge animal lover. She always had to have one to look after,” she said, remarking on the care she put into tending to her two dogs, Butters and Bonnie.

When relaxing, her mother said she loved nothing more than to sit around a campfire, preferring camping and the outdoors to all else.

Charmaine also recounted how, on that final night before Lauren left her home, she had not wanted her to go, blowing her a “million kisses”, each of them giving one another Lauren’s trademark “bear hugs”.

“When you see your child and you give them a big kiss goodbye, you never think it’s going to be the last time,” she said. “You think, ‘Oh, she’s got her whole life ahead of her’. I want to tell people to hug your kids, because you never know, I didn’t think it was going to happen in a million years.”

Lauren’s brother, Garrett, put it best, according to Charmaine, when he wrote in Lauren’s memory card: “Intense is a word often used to describe Lauren,” he wrote. “She was an indescribably beautiful person with a passion for life and a spark that caught everyone’s attention. She loved and fought fiercely. Everything she did, she did it with every ounce of herself, the way she taught, the way she stood, the way she spoke and the way she hugged like she was never letting go.”

Keith was born on July 7th, 1955 to Mary (Nighswander) and Wilbur Barkey.

Keith was son number 4 and grew up on the home farm in Pickering on Lot 35, Concession 3. The early years were spent with his older brothers Don and Glenn, younger brother Lynn and cousins who lived nearby. The dairy farm was an active place, a great place to grow up which instilled a solid work ethic in Keith. Later, Keith went to work in the aggregate industry and spent more than 40 years operating heavy equipment. He made many friends and connections throughout his years working at Lee Sand and Gravel and more recently at Chefero Sand and Gravel. Many people knew him simply as “Albert”. For the past many years, Keith helped Glenn look after their mom, who continues to battle with Alzheimer’s. Keith fought his battle with cancer courageously. He was taken swiftly but died peacefully with family and a close friend by his side.

Keith was predeceased by his (infant) brother Murray and his father Wilbur.

He is survived by his mother Mary, brother Don and sister-in-law Diane (Kitchen), his brother Glenn, his brother Lynn and sister-in-law Laura (Reesor), nieces and nephews Melissa and Dave (Muir), Valerie and Paul (Marshall), Ryan and Kyra (Anderson), Christine and Jon (Willie) and Jordan. Keith was also a great uncle to Avery and Evan (Muir), Elliot and Rose (Marshall) and Carl and Nora (Barkey.)

Thanks to the awesome nurses at Markham Stouffville Hospital and to Drs. Solow and Patterson.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the palliative care unit would be welcome.

Visitation will be held at Dixon Garland Funeral Home, 166 Main St N. HOUGHTON, Sylvia It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sylvia Houghton on June 2 at the age of 72, at Markham Stouffville Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. She will be missed by her loving husband of nearly 50 years and best friend Bruce, her 2 sons David (Christine) Derek (Kerry) and by her 6 grandchildren, Meaghan, Alexandra, Macleod, Tyler, Adam and Chase.

MacCarl Marek cared for children in Aurora for decades

ext time you drive by Taylor Park in Aurora, you should stop and take some time to remember Jane MacCarl Marek. The 52-year-old Aurora resident died without warning from sudden cardiac arrest in February.

The park is where MacCarl Marek took dozens of children from her home care over the years to play. She provided care to children in Aurora for close to 20 years.

One of those former home care children was Katy Lemaire. The 18-year-old Aurora resident lived next door to Jane and was the same age as her son, Lucas. “She basically was like a second mom,” Lemaire said.

Even as she got older, Lemaire would continue to go over to spend time with Jane.

“She was a really genuine person. She was always there to listen. You genuinely wanted to be around her,” Lemaire said.

While MacCarl Marek loved kids, her mother Mary Tripp MacCarl said she was approachable for everyone. “She was real people person. She kept in touch with everyone,” she said.

Like many others, Lemaire was shocked to learn of Jane’s death in February. Because it happened so suddenly, she felt something needed to be done to help the community grieve.

Lemaire thought it would be nice to plant a tree in memory of Jane at the local park where she spent so much time. So she started a Facebook group and added Jane’s Facebook friends and was able to raise $1,400 for the cause.

money for a tree, which Lemaire organized through the Town of Aurora. They were also able to get a bench refurbished in memory of Jane.

On May 20, a ceremony was held at Taylor Park with dozens of community members to unveil the maple tree and bench in Jane’s memory.

It was a touching moment for Tripp MacCarl, who said many of the children her daughter took care of over the years were there.

“It was wonderful to see the kind of commitment to the community Jane had and the commitment the community had for her,” Tripp MacCarl said.

It was no surprise to Tripp MacCarl that her daughter ended up working with little children. Growing up in Toronto, MacCarl Marek would spend her summers babysitting kids.

Before moving to Aurora more than 20 year ago, MacCarl Marek lived in Toronto and was a veterinary technician. Those skills weren’t lost in Aurora as she shared her love of animals with the community, too, Lemaire said.

Through organizing the tree dedication, Lemaire said her warm perceptions of Jane were confirmed by meeting all the people she had touched in various ways. “She just took everybody under her wing,” she said.

The children will still be playing at Taylor Park this summer and while MaCarl Marek might not be there to watch, her spirit is on hand.

A tree in her name gives them clean air to breathe and a bench in her name gives the children a quiet place to rest or, better yet, their caregivers.

Spirit loses leading scorer to U of T Stouffville’s loss is Toronto’s gain.

Nathan Hudgin will be taking the next step in his budding hockey career to the University of Toronto this fall.

The 18-year-old former Stouffville Spirit forward led the club in scoring this past season and was tied in 17th place overall in the Ontario Junior Hockey League with 29 goals and 31 assists.

The Scarborough resident has two years of junior eligibility remaining.

A 13th round pick of the Kitchener Rangers in the 2013 Ontario Hockey League priority selection, Hudgin joined the Spirit in the 2014-15 campaign and had 21 points in 41 regular season games and helped them qualify for the postseason.

Hudgin’s strong finish to the 2015-16 season saw him named runner-up for the OJHL Gongshow Gear North-East Conference Player-of-the-Month in February.

Spring Lakes Golf Club is undergoing a major rebranding.

Within that master plan, Bob Lean would like to see erased the negative stigma once associated with Stouffville’s 54-hole private course he calls the largest private club in North America.

Recently taking on the reins as the club’s chief executive officer and managing partner and still serving as club professional, Lean has incorporated several initiatives to make Spring Lakes an enticing place to play.

“Things are going off the charts. We’ve got a lot going on and it’s all great,” he said.

While citing their fairways and greens are in

immaculate playing condition, Lean has taken immediate steps to bolster the club’s social amenities. That was an aspect which sorely needed an upgrade, he said after negotiations had been ongoing over the last five months to purchase the 800-acre facility for an undisclosed amount from Beth Frost.

Among the immediate and noticeable changes that have begun is the paving of the parking lot. Lean said they’re attempting to change the atmosphere by opening the bar.

Those entering will notice a big screen TV now in place and patrons can enter wearing golf shoes, which was a faux pas in the past.

To upgrade their food and beverage menu, Lean said they’ve brought in a new chef in Graham Gallagher from Unionville.

Nicole Burns ran her way to a 20th place finish at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations track and field championships Friday in Windsor.

The lone Stouffville District Secondary School student to advance to the championships, the Grade 11 student was entered in the senior girls’ 100 metre low hurdles event.

Burns ran 16.61 seconds in the preliminary rounds but failed to qualify for the final.

Alex Gurdyal finished eighth in the Bantam Boys U15 Division after he finished 27-over through the two-round event at 169 (84-85).

In the Juvenile Boys U17 event, Adam Bain also finished eighth overall when he finished with a 33-over par 175 (86-89).

In the CJGA’s ClubLink Linkster Series at Cherry Downs event Sunday, Westley Wong shot a 13-over 44 during the nine-hole competition to place sixth in the Bantam Boys U11 division. In the Novice Boys U9 group, Kimi Wong shot a 25-over 58 to finish 12th overall.

Two Stouffville youngsters cracked the top 10 when they took to the fairways in the Canadian Junior Golf Association Junior at Cherry Downs event at Cherry Downs Golf Club near Pickering last weekend.

Ballantrae’s Gajan Sivabalasingham was part of a four-member University of Waterloo men’s golf team that finished seventh at the Canadian University/College Championship in Parskville, B.C., on Friday.
