Council funds Diabetes Dash, rejects Terry Fox Run

The Terry Fox Run’s request for a $2,300 grant and in-kind donation from the Town of WhitchurchStouffville was denied by council Tuesday afternoon.

“You couldn’t get a better cause. … But I feel again this is a donation to cancer, which is an individual choice that if someone wants to donate they should,” said Ward 4 Councillor Rick Upton during the deliberation of more than 30 requests for financial assistance from community groups.

“I don’t know it’s up to us to take the taxpayers’ money and donate it to

cancer.”

The councillor, however, vowed, he would get the organization the money it needs for police, a DJ, pylons and barricades.

“I will commit personally to raise the money,” he said.

Ward 2 Councillor Maurice Smith read a portion of the letter, which stated: “at this time com-

munity support has been overwhelming and at this time we do not anticipate turning to the town for any financial support related to the move”.

Habitat aproved Council, however, left the door open for the food bank to return and ask for financial assistance at a later date.

Habitat for Humanity’s request to have more than $13,000 in development charges for its Mainand Stouffer streets build deferred, was approved – for 35 years or when a change of use occurs.

Although several local municipal councils have passed motions calling for York Region’s chairperson to be elected, there’s a possibility their pitches could fall on deaf ears when the issue resurfaces today.

If regional council actually makes a decision Thursday and doesn’t push the matter off again, that is.

Local councils in Newmarket, Aurora, Whitchurch-Stouffville, East Gwillimbury and Markham have all voted in favour of having an elected chairperson.

That would replace the current system of having the region’s top political job selected by the 20 politicians sitting around the regional council table.

However, other than WhitchurchStouffville Mayor Justin Altmann, the mayors of those municipalities voted for keeping the status quo.

And it’s the mayors and regional councillors, for those municipalities with more than one representative on regional council, not local councillors, who will be making the decision.

For example, in a 7-1 vote, Newmarket Mayor Tony Van Bynen was the only politician on Newmarket council to oppose an elected chairperson when the town’s council dealt with the issue last week.

Will he and other mayors, whose opinions differ from their local councils, endorse the current system or follow the wishes of their local councils?

When the issue came up at regional council in June 2012, there was no appetite around the table for change.

Altmann, Newmarket Regional Councillor John Taylor and Markham regional councillors Joe Li, Nirmala Armstrong and Jim Jones voted in favour of an elected chairperson when the issue came up recently at their local councils.

Newmarket-Aurora MPP Chris Ballard, who is spearheading a private member’s bill at Queen’s Park that would impose an elected chairperson if regional council doesn’t make the move itself, has said it’s wrong not to have voters elect the regional position.

The chairperson, who is paid more than $200,000 a year, oversees a budget of $3 billion in a region with a population of 1.1 million residents, he said.

Durham, Halton and Waterloo regions have chairs elected by voters, while Niagara and Peel don’t, although Peel is looking at the issue as part of a governance review, York CAO Bruce Macgregor said in a report going to York regional council Thursday.

About 750,000 York would be eligible to vote for the chairperson if the system is changed, meaning the region would host the third-largest municipal election in Canada in 2018 if Peel does not move to an elected chair, he said.

Three more victims have come forward to York Regional Police after the service charged a man with luring a 12-year-old York Region boy over social media with a fake Facebook profile displaying photos of a beautiful woman.

The boy’s parents discovered his online activities, uncovering the countless sexual discussions he was allegedly and unwittingly having with Donald Richards, 40, from Bowmanville.

However this case is not as simplistic as online grooming, according to police, considering Richards was working at concessions stands at a number of hockey rinks around Oshawa, including Donevan Recreation Complex, Oshawa Civic, Harman Arena and Oshawa Children’s Arena.

Investigators suggest Richards might have obtained boys’ names and information from team rosters posted around the rink or, even more disturbingly, from the boys’ hockey jerseys, which often have last names on the back.

York police Const. Andy Pattenden said the allegations are concerning for a number of reasons, including the fact that the victim did not know the accused by face.

“It’s troubling that he went to that effort to locate a young boy with a fake profile,” Const. Andy Pattenden said.

Safeguards in place Neither the boy’s name nor the community where he lives will be published to protect his identity, especially considering how small the hockey communities are in many towns.

The players are not the only victim of the scheme, police say. The female shown in the photograph on the profile, which police reluctantly decided to put out so other victims would notice her face and come forward, has also now come forward and is distraught by the allegations. The Durham Region woman is said to be angry that her image could be used for these purposes, Const.

Pattenden said.

When contacted, one man at a rink where Richards used to work said he was sad to hear about the allegations, noting surprise at the charges.

“Don was always such a good guy,” he said.

Former NHLer Jim Thomson, who now owns the Aurora Tigers Junior A hockey club, said, as a father of five and a coach, he will be speaking to parents, coaches and owners about this story.

“I feel terrible for these kids,” he said. “It’s one of those things, maybe we don’t have enough education about social media? I have an owners’ meeting coming up. I will be putting this on my list to speak about.”

Kirk Kelly, interim president of the Newmarket Minor Hockey Association, said his organization already has a number of policies in place to maintain privacy, including keeping the rosters under lock and key and ensuring no full names or unauthorized photos are published online in accordance with the privacy rules of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association.

“We already did speak to our players about social media and bullying, to make sure players don’t call out their opponents before games,” he said, noting that he might look at raising other issues around social media in the near future.

Richards, who was arrested at his home last Thursday, has been released on bail and is to be back in court March 15.

Re: Town staff departures ‘average,’ CAO says, Jan. 28 So Marc Pourvahidi, the CAO of the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville thinks it is normal for about 25 staff to leave the municipality’s employment during the past year-plus?

Well, citizens of Whitchurch-Stouffville, if you believe that, I have some swampland in Florida to sell to you.

Yes, it is a fact employees come to small towns like Whitchurch-Stouffville to gain experience, then leave for larger municipalities — but not 25 of them.

A more reasonable number would be two or three. Such a large exodus can only be the result of undesirable working conditions.

This council must get their collective heads out of the sand and start investigating why. To sit and do nothing is allowing the situation to get worse.

These employees were good employees and deserve a follow-up. For the good of our town, it is important the remaining employees want to continue their employment

Time for other municipalities to step up on social housing Re: Survey finds ‘significant’ homeless population, Jan. 28, yorkregion.com Newmarket has significantly played its role in supporting homeless people wishing to live in York Region and really does not have any room to donate.

Newmarket, with one-third of the size of Richmond Hill, has the same amount of social housing as Richmond Hill, while large municipalities such as Markham, Vaughan and King show no interest to let any social housing development within their borders.

This big density of affordable housing in Newmarket has significant costs for Newmarket taxpayers and it is time for other York municipalities to pay their share to the

community.

York Region can encourage municipalities to participate by levying fewer taxes on municipalities that have a higher number of affordable units per acre.

Bloodletting and chatter: Welcome to the club

I

t’s a pretty cool club.

We meet every other month. There’s no agenda. No one is enforcing goofy rules.

Membership is open and free of charge.

This is definitely not town council.

But there are oatmeal cookies.

And coffee.

And lots of chatter.

Some differences of opinion.

And good, old bloodletting.

Litres of it.

Literally.

Canadian Blood Services holds clinics at Latcham Hall in Stouffville Memorial Park.

I don’t have a lot of hobbies.

But this I can do: Wear a short-sleeved shirt and lay on a cot for half an hour. I just think July.

The insertion of the needle, which gives Hitchcockian nightmares to so many, is near painless. These are trained professionals, not amateur piercers and tattoo artists at some backwoods country fair.

I started giving at the urging of a co-worker about 25 years ago. The other guy moved on and I began spending more of my work days in Markham. I got lazy and stopped giving.

I also got mad at the administrators of the program. I wasn’t alone. The predonation questioning went from friendly queries to all-out interrogation. They only forgot to shine a light in our eyes while asking if we’d had sex with monkeys recently.

That’s changed, thankfully, back to a kinder, gentler question period.

The Ladies Auxiliary at the original Royal Canadian Legion on Ninth Line ran the clinics masterfully for many decades.

Veteran donors recall a “Pint for a Pint” promotion where you sipped on a complimentary cold one after filling a bag with blood.

Now it’s juice boxes or a hot

Off The Top with Jim Mason beverage and a snack from the local volunteers as you recover with your fellow donors.

Because most appointments are scheduled in advance, you run into many of the same folks at every clinic.

Those with grandchildren share pictures. For others, it’s travel tips, book reviews or a commentary on the latest controversial move by some government.

It’s old Stouffville, but newcomers are welcomed with open arms. Volunteer Ivan Harris — what doesn’t he do in this town? — rings a bell to signal a first-time donation.

I even met a clinic nurse I went to high school with many years and 1,400 kilometers away from here.

In Russia, the States, China and Germany you can make about $50 for donating blood.

Must be a world power thing.

Not here.

Not everyone can give blood. There’s a long list of reasons you can’t, from age (at least 17) to weight (minimum 110 pounds, if you are under 24), to recent travel and tattoos.

These women care and it shows

ever underestimate the power of a woman.

Never, ever under-estimate the power of 88 women.

In a charitable sense, this is the titanic quality of a Whitchurch-Stouffville organization called ‘100 Women Who Care’. The local chapter, founded in 2014 by Stouffville’s Heather Rogers, is one of 250 units spread across the United States and Canada. Membership here, that began with 35, has grown to 88 with the possibility of 100 by the end of the year.

While social correlation is an important segment of the group, the main function is raising money for charitable purposes. This resolve is accomplished by members paying $100 each at four meetings held every year.

To date, the membership has raised $50,000, all of which has been divided among seven charitable applicants: The Crisis Pregnancy Centre; Young Life of Canada; Jennifer Ashleigh Children’s Charity; Parkview Services for Seniors; Evergreen Hospice; WhitchurchStouffville Public Library; Whitchurch-Stouffville Food Bank and Stouffville Cares.

A Whitchurch-Stouffville membership objective of 100 would raise $10,000 annually, the chapter’s anticipated goal. Get-togethers are held at Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club.

Karen Dunigan of Jackson, Mich., initiated the first ‘100 Women Who Care’ program back in 2006. The commitment was simple – “to raise money efficiently and quickly for local charities”. This pledge has never changed.

“It’s my baby,” says Rogers, founder of WhitchurchStouffville’s chapter and mother of two. “With small children, some mothers

The organization entitled WS YOU 177, under the direction of Brian Puppa and head researcher Susan Bosak has, for the past several months, attempted to bring all age sectors of the town together and make it a better community.

Explained Puppa at a legacy meeting Thursday night: “Whitchurch-Stouffville is one of the fastest growing communities in the country.

While we need more physical infrastructure like roads, homes and schools, we also need improved social infrastructure — the powerful yet often invisible dynamics that make lives truly meaningful and ensure we survive to the benefit of all, now and in the future”.

Said Bosak: “Imagine a better community for all right now in which today’s generations create profound gifts for future generations”.

It’s a journey, the two speakers stressed, from dreams to legacy and from aspirations to action that will create inspired lives in a caring community.

The way the system works, nominating members supporting three randomly selected organizations will address the group.

Members then vote for one of the three.

After the votes are tallied, each member will write a cheque for $100 to the organization receiving the most support. That organization will then receive a group cheque of $10,000. An organization not selected at one meeting may be submitted for consideration later.

Rogers is passionate concerning the club’s ability to generate funds to benefit registered local charities. “It’s fabulous,” she says. What also pleases her is the ‘openness’ of the association with no pre-requisites regarding race, religion, colour or creed.

“We’re just a fun bunch of girls,” she said.

Community, new church help food bank make move The Whitchurch-Stouffville Food Bank is expected to open the doors to its new location by the end of March.

To help the food bank with its move, the Canadian Marthoma Church donated $1,862.

“It’s a very generous gesture on their part,” said Marion Wells, the food bank’s co-ordinator.

The reformed orthodox church has been in Markham since 1987, but later this year, construction on its new location on Sandiford Drive is expected to get underway.

The church’s 800-person congregation made the donation because they support local charities and soon it will call Stouffville home, according to Biji Thomas, the church’s treasurer.

The food bank has received numerous offers by people to volunteer their time to

help with the move, according to Wells, who also noted they have received a number of the equipment pieces they requested earlier this year.

The reformed orthodox church has been in Markham since 1987, but later this year, construction on its new location on Sandiford Drive is expected to get underway.

“The community has really ponied up,” she said.

History books provide details on wars, explorations, discoveries and every other type of large-scale, life-altering event that occurred in the world.

But it’s the diaries of young girls, men and anybody else who ever dared to put pen to paper with their innermost thoughts that give us a glimpse into what daily life was really like, whether it be the 1600s, 1800s or today.

The newest exhibition at the Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum — A Lifetime: Day by Day, Five Women and their Diaries — looks at Ontario’s female pioneers, through their own words.

The show, which opened Feb. 9, is on loan from the Archives of Ontario. The exhibition is also supplemented with artefacts from the museum’s own collection.

“We want to get people thinking about how communication has changed,” said Stephanie Foley, curator for the Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum.

Male farmers, who kept journals, typically, in succinct fashion, noted the weather and crops. Sometimes they made notations on family deaths and births.

“They’re a little dry,” Foley admitted.

line entries noting deaths of local people and family members, according to Foley.

The five women featured in the exhibition wrote in more detail about their families, friends, occupations, social interactions and by extension, their communities.

Phoebe Holden Gregg’s journal starts in 1849 when she married at age 18 and ends in 1863 when she is 62.

Gregg’s daughter, Bessie Gregg Stewart, also started a diary of her own on her wedding day.

Facebook: the new journal?

Frances Tweedie Milne wrote in her journal from age 18 to 34.

Among her entries was the admission she suffered from depression following the birth of her third child.

“I am alone and baby cried some. I am feeling very sad sometimes,” Milne wrote in 1872 at age 21.

The women also wrote about their children, in much the same way we do today: “Baby can push a chair round the room.” “Charles took one step today in the pantry.” “Baby trying to walk more and doesn’t seem afraid of falling.”

Foley not only wants the exhibition to give people a glimpse of the past, but have us take a look at the ways we communicate today.

“Everybody’s attention span is so short, do we communicate well with anyone, have we lost the ability to communicate

with each other anymore because we’re so attached to our tablets and phones?” she said.

While some people may still actually write in a diary/journal, we typically don’t keep them as private as they once were.

Blogs and Facebook have replaced hiding them in the back of the drawer, wrapped in a shirt, so no one would find it.

“We think that the main difference has been a societal shift from the diary era to now. At that point, the diary was used to record private thoughts that were not intended to be shared with anyone.

Society and families in general were more private. There were lots of things that happened in your lives that you just did not share — maybe even within your family and certainly not outside your family,” according to Foley.

“Society has become more accepting over the years and so sharing everything on Facebook now reflects a more open society, anything goes. … We did note that it’s not necessarily a more honest communication now, as people put a happy spin on a lot of their posts and share pictures of themselves in happy, social moments.

The diaries were likely recording a more honest, however, repetitive and mundane storyline,” she added.

The exhibition runs until April 30.

“Some people have no choice,” Sederoff insisted, claiming people can’t live in limbo forever. “These people have authorizations from doctors — physicians are out there promoting this stuff.”

Sederoff says Crowns should not be seeking such harsh penalties, especially considering Prime Minister Justin Trudeau won the October election, running on a platform that included legalizing marijuana. “(Former prime minister Stephen) Harper’s not there anymore,

When a Markham father and son’s lease for the medical marijuana site they were maintaining expired, they were forced to get creative and move the operation to the town of Stayner, where the family owned a farm.

Despite having a valid licence from Health Canada to grow 1,025 plants — a limit to which they were adhering and a lawyer’s letter in hand explaining their actions, their farm was busted by cops and the men arrested in September 2015.

but the rules still are,” said Sederoff. “If the government authorizes people to grow marijuana for medical purposes, why are they all of a sudden not allowing people to grow marijuana? I’m running into this everywhere — Collingwood, Newmarket and Oshawa.”

Sederoff’s comments come as he prepares to launch a constitutional challenge to the conviction of Markham student Wen Wen Li, 28. The expectant father faces three years in prison despite not having a criminal record and allegedly working for $60 a day at a grow-op.

As part of his campaign to free

his clients, Sederoff has written to Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould and Health Minister Dr. Jane Philpott, requesting sit-downs with each in a bid to explain the issues he and his clients face.

In reply to requests for comment, the Department of Justice said there is little they can do until official changes are made to laws.

“The legalization and strict regulation of marijuana is one of this government’s commitments, as set out in the mandate letters to the ministers of justice, health and public safety,” read the statement.

Man who was once one of Canada’s ‘most wanted’ shares cautionary tale with York Region youths

fter hearing the disturbing life story of one of Canada’s most hardened former criminals, Grade 12 student Mitchell Smelser is worried about teens he sees dabbling in destructive behaviour.

“It’s really interesting to see something so real and (hear about) some of the things he’s experienced. You see stuff kind of like that at school, but a lot more minor,” the 17-yearold student at Jean Vanier Catholic High School said.

“You see people starting to get into stuff like that (drug use) and to see what happens in the end if you keep on that track is kind of scary. I haven’t really felt emotional so much about a presentation before. (I’m) almost uneasy, knowing how dangerous it really is.”

Once one of Canada’s most-wanted criminals, Rick “Ozzy” Osborne, a former drug addict who spent more than 24 years behind bars, spoke about his past to about five dozen students from across York Region at a conference on the dangers of drug use and substance abuse at the York Catholic District School Board headquarters in Aurora.

“Guys like me don’t exist outside of God’s grace. I’m a Christian and I never apologize for how it works,” said Osborne, 60, who now offers motivational presentations.

“If you figure it out when you’re young, you have a better life. If you wait until you’re older, you’ve got to ask for miracles. I’d rather live in blessing than in miracles. A guy like me is a miracle. You don’t get to go into the (criminal) world as deep as I did and come out without being one.”

Although Osborne became only the 17th federal inmate in Canada to earn a university degree when he received a bachelor of arts in psychology from Queen’s University more than 20 years ago, he was a vulnerable young teenager just entering high school when he lost his way in life.

A quiet kid who had been bullied and was friendless, the 14-year-old was walking to school the first day of Grade 9 when he encountered a young man who he considered the coolest guy he’d ever seen working on his car.

Osborne, living in Niagara Falls after moving from the United States with his family three years earlier, couldn’t wait to talk to his new and only friend on his way to and from class every day.

The first week of October, the week before he turned 15, Osborne was eager to get into the man’s convertible when he was

offered a ride.

“I’m a 14-year-old boy. You pretty much have to hit me with a hammer to not go for a ride,” he said.

“The worst thing I could see in my mind was if I was late getting home, my mom would yell at me.”

Sadly, reality turned out to be much worse.

He ended up in an apartment where a group of junkies injected him against his will with a “speedball” containing methamphetamine and heroin, a concoction that left him unconscious.

When he woke up, he was so high, he couldn’t speak for a day or sleep or eat for three.

He found his way to a hostel, where he paid $1 to get a cot and woke up being sexually assaulted.

The next night, he met two prostitutes who tried to take care of him. Not knowing how else to help the young teenager obviously suffering from a bad trip, the women went out and scored some heroin for him.

“That quickly, I was a junkie,” Osborne said.

The incident quickly led to an escalating life of crime and despair, including drug addiction, petty street crimes, being attacked as a 16-year-old by a convicted rapist while in Florida, covering up self-mutilation cuts with more than 480 tattoos and joining a powerful outlaw biker gang.

“By 19, (I was) one of Canada’s most dangerous men and I’m not fooling around when I say that. At 21, I went to the penitentiary. I got (sentenced to) 31 years for robbery times three, weapons times four, assault police and escape custody and possession of narcotics,” he said.

Although he was released after 15 years, he soon found himself back in prison.

With five other prisoners waiting to kill him, Osborne decided to kill himself.

Fortunately, while in his cell ready to commit suicide, he heard the voice of his father.

“My dad’s voice came to me like he was standing behind me. There is only one man in this world I listen to, only one man: my dad,” he said.

“My dad used to say to me, it was one of my dad’s lines because I was always f’ing

up, — as I am ready to swallow this heroin and give up on life, says, ‘If it’s all lost, ask God’.”

Although Osborne was a hardened criminal in maximum security, prison officials took a chance on him and allowed him to enter a drug treatment program.

He then began taking university classes, with one of the proudest moments of his life being the day he was allowed out of Kingston Penitentiary to attend his graduation at Queen’s.

Osborne now heads a charitable organization called Truth For Teens, aimed at inspiring young people to stay in school and avoid destructive behaviours such as drug use.

Gerry Acton worked so others could play

ind. Generous. Compassionate. Perfectionist. A giver, not a taker.

Spiritual.

Ask anyone to describe Gerry Acton and these are just some of the adjectives they would use.

Gerry died in December after a lengthy illness. He was 89. He left behind his wife of 69 years, Betty, sons Keith and Kevin, as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren.

“Some people would say this is an even tougher time for this to happen to dad, around Christmas,” son Keith said in his eulogy.

“Actually, it is very fitting being so close to Jesus’ birth. Dad had tremendous faith and trust in God. His belief never wavered.”

An Uxbridge native, Gerry was the eldest of three children. It was the Depression and Gerry had to leave school in Grade 8 in order to run his family farm.

That work ethic was constant.

Gerry became a contractor then a carpenter, who did a lot of work on homes throughout Stouffville. He also worked on the Silver Jubilee building in downtown Stouffville.

“I’m not going to put my name to that unless it was perfect,” Keith recalled of his father’s tendency to do things right and only right.

Keith got a taste of his father’s work ethic when he worked for him one summer. That summer made Keith, a budding hockey star, realize he’d better skate faster

and shoot harder because that was not the career for him.

Gerry never played sports, didn’t even boat, swim or fish at the family cottage. But he supported Keith and Kevin’s athletic endeavours.

Betty, who he met at a dance at Musselman’s Lake, was a speed skater. The two boys also participated in the sport for a number of years. Gerry, however, preferred to stand in the cold, all day long, at the finish line, with a stopwatch in hand, timing the races.

He was also a minor hockey manager.

“Intense, conscientious manager for the team,” is how Wilf Morley described him. Wilf and Gerry met in the mid-1960s when their boys played baseball and hockey together. Wilf was a pallbearer at Gerry’s funeral.

“He wanted to contribute with no desire to be recognized,” Keith said in his eulogy. “He didn’t know a lot about (hockey) then.

The only advice he gave to Kevin and I when it came to hockey was don’t smoke, don’t drink and stay away from the puck — you won’t get hurt.”

Donations in his memory were made to minor hockey.

Along with carpentry and being around his family, Gerry also loved to cut the grass.

Wilf recalled there was a day Gerry wanted to cut Keith’s grass. But Keith’s lawnmower was broken. So Gerry had to figure out how to get his rider from Burkholder Street to Mill Street.

Wilf suggested he just drive it over. It took some coaxing, but he did it.

“From that day, I saw Gerry go up Market to Mill Street to cut the grass,” Wilf said. “It was funny.”

His smile and friendship is what Wilf will miss most about Gerry. “Gerry was always the happy guy. I never saw Gerry when he wasn’t happy.”

“I heard someone say he never heard Gerry say a bad word about anybody and I never heard Gerry say a bad word, period,” Wilf said.

He was also generous, selfless.

She was a pillar in the Markham community as a Directress and Founder of the little red brick schoolhouse at the corner of Main Street, Unionville and Highway #7: The Montessori North School.

She ran the school for thirty-five years.

Fari, as she is affectionately known, was, more than anything else, warm and motherly. Not only to her two children, Minelle and Reza Mahtani, but before that to her two brothers, Farokh and Ferooz as well as so many of the children at the school.

In fact, in recent years, some of the students she taught in the 1970s had come to her school to enroll their own kids, thus ensuring that Fari was teaching generations of Markham residents. Sadly, she will not have the opportunity to bond further with her grandson, Cole, the son of Minelle and Bruce Baum. Many attested to her loving and mindful nature at her memorial held at the Montessori North School on Friday February 5.

Farideh had a very strong bond with the spiritual. She embraced the goodness from all religions and spiritual philosophies; goodness to her was the sum of all religious philosophies. She constantly sought ways to improve her spiritual being.

In her early years, Farideh was often thwarted by the vicissitudes of life: her life took her from Iran to India, Pakistan, Iran again, Britain where she met and married Kishin Mahtani and finally Markham.

Fari leaves behind many people who hold her in high regard and who will always keep her in a warm spot of their hearts. She was unfailingly gracious and it was rare to see her without a smile on her face. Fari took her final breath on the morning of Wednesday the 3rd of February, 2016 at Markham Stouffville Hospital in palliative care, where she received superlative care from the wonderful nurses who treated her with kindness and respect. She will be very missed. With love, her two devoted children, Minelle and Reza Mahtani.

He was blessed by beating all of the odds and living life to the fullest for another 22 years which included downhill and cross-country skiing, tennis, golfing, curling and many trail bike rides. Gib and B.J. enjoyed passing on their passion for family activities to their children and grandchildren. They created a family that loves spending time together.

With the regular season rapidly winding down, the Stouffville Spirit picked a good time to be playing some of their best hockey of the 2015-16 campaign. Vying for one of the final playoff spots in the North-East Conference, the Spirit are on a six-game winning streak and currently hold down the eighth and final postseason spot.

The most recent win came on Family Day when the Spirit and Newmarket Hurricanes battled through two overtime periods before Stouffville emerged with a hard-fought 6-5 win. Playing the game at the Stouffville

Arena before the biggest crowd – 527 – this season, the Spirit got a goal from their leading scorer, Nathan Hudgin, at the 4:32 mark of the second overtime period to skate off with the two points.

Josh Argier scored two goals and collected a pair of helpers, including one on the power play in the third period to force overtime for the Spirit, who battled Newmarket to a 1-1 tie after the first period and led 4-2 through two. Defenceman Ryan DaSilva, Jack Varga and Alex Williamson added single tallies. Newmarket delivered 38 shots on Spirit goaltender Aaron Taylor.

Stouffville fired 34 shots on Newmarket goalkeeper Aidan Doak.

The win came on the heels of a 6-3 victory over the Lindsay Muskies at the Stouffville Arena Saturday. Hudgin had three goals while DaSilva added a pair. Sam Hu added the other goal for the Spirit.

INSIDER: Prior to the start of Monday’s matinee, Mayor Justin Altmann took part in opening face-off ceremonies.

Hu incurred a two-game suspension after being called third man in during a scuffle at the 20-minute mark of the second period Saturday. Acquired by the Spirit early this season, Hu did not play Monday and will sit out tonight’s rematch in Newmarket – against the team that traded him to Stouffville last fall.

Captain Spencer Roberts remained out of the Spirit roster for their weekend games.

No definite timetable has been set for his return, said Spirit head coach Jeff Perrin.

GENERALLY SPEAKING: “The guys are determined to win,” said Perrin. “They know what’s at stake and they’ve all been stepping up and playing well.”

Reflecting on their success, Perrin said the biggest aspect that’s pleased him has been the character they’ve exhibited of late. A big part of which has developed once the club finished its dealing of players and avoiding the dreaded injury bug for the most part of the season.

“Their compete level has been consistent lately, they’re finding ways to win and they’ve developed a will to win,” he said.

“Everyone has stepped up their game a little bit more.”

As well, Perrin praised the work of his special teams units of late, especially their power play, which is sixth best in the OJHL. “The guys have been keeping it simple.

When they get chances on the power play they’re finishing things off now,” he said.

With just four regular season games remaining, Perrin said they cannot afford to take their foot off the accelerator. Should the club win the remaining games, they could vault up in the North-East Conference playoff positioning race.

“All of our remaining games will be tough.

We have a big game Thursday (against rival Newmarket) and if we can win that we could move past them in the standings,” he noted as the Spirit are just one point behind the Hurricanes.

Hudgin felt a big factor in the club’s reversal of fortunes after they started the regular season 0-8-2, was a message Perrin had delivered to the team not too long ago.

“He (Perrin) said the playoffs are coming and if we don’t play well we won’t be in them,” Hudgin said. “I just want to make the playoffs. With four games left it’s going to be a real battle. We want to keep our streak going for as long as possible. So far, our lines have been good.

“It’s tough to see Spencer (Roberts) and Sammy (Hu) being out, but the guys are doing what they have to do to win.”

“I think we always knew that we had it in us,” added veteran forward Chad Burrows.

“We started out slow in our first 10 games.

We weren’t getting the bounces. But now things are coming together just in time for the playoffs. We’ve developed a good chemistry and the guys have been working well together.”

Burrows 3rd on all-time Spirit list When Chad Burrows stepped onto the Stouffville Arena ice for the Stouffville Spirit’s game tilt against the Lindsay Muskies Saturday, it represented a special occasion in his Ontario Junior Hockey League career.

For the 19-year-old Stouffville resident, it marked his 192nd regular season game in donning a Spirit uniform that began in 2012.

In doing so, Burrows surpassed former defenceman Matt Heffernan and moved into third place for most games played by a player during the Spirit’s 20-year history.

While the league’s data only dates back to the 2005-06 campaign, Spirit co-owner and general manager and uncle of Chad, Kenny Burrows, said former captain Randy Johnston played the most number of games for the club followed by defenceman J.D. Smithson. Both logged five seasons with the Spirit.

“About 10 games ago Alex (Williamson) showed me that I was getting closer to it. But before that time I had no idea I was getting close to it,” Chad said.

“To do it in front of my family and friends is a bonus,” he said. “It’s been easy for me to go to the rink and have fun.”

“I’ve had a couple of small injuries along the way where I’ve been out a couple of games at a time,” he said. “But I’ve been pretty lucky so far.”

While Burrows can continue to add onto his streak as he has one more year of tier two Jr. A eligibility next season and is in line to challenge Smithson and Johnston’s longevity marks, he would like nothing more than to make a major contribution to assist the Spirit in their late-season push towards making the postseason, as they currently are riding a sixgame winning streak.

“We definitely want to make the playoffs,” he said. “We’re in eighth place now (in the North-East Conference playoff standings) and we want to keep it going.

“Right now we just need to win as many games as possible and to get a little help from some other teams.”
