Mistake that lasts a lifetime

E

very morning Kevin Brooks wakes up, there’s a wheelchair beside him that reminds him of his “nightmare”: killing his friend in a drunk driving crash.

It began as a typical warm Saturday in June 2000.

Brooks, then 21, was hanging out with his high school sweetheart and watched her ride in a horse show. He then went to his youngest sister’s ballet recital.

After the event, Brooks attended a house party where he thought he’d have a few beers and then call it a night.

But that never happened.

“I ran into some old school hockey friends I’d grown up with, and one thing led to another, and we were down to have a wild night,” Brooks said.

And they hopped from one party to another.

At one point during the night, Brooks returned home to get more beer. He wasn’t yet “blackout drunk” and stopped in front of his car thinking something bad could happen.

“We all have that voice inside that warns us at times,” Brooks said.

“That was one moment where I was still consciously aware of what was going on and had that opportunity to make the better choice and chose not to.”

Brushing off the warning, Brooks continued drinking and partying hard.

“By the time we were leaving the last house party, we were all really drunk,” said Brooks.

“We were double digit drinks for sure. I’d say well over 10, probably pushing 20.”

Three of Brooks’ buddies got in a cab, but before it left, one friend, Brendon, got out and opted to travel with Brooks.

“I was like the stubborn idiot who wanted to drive drunk,” Brooks said. “From what I’ve heard, people were trying to get my keys away from me, but I had an extra pair in the glove box. ... In hindsight, too bad somebody didn’t just punch me out.”

Brooks and Brendon were speeding to another party.

“Going 110 to 130 in a 70 zone, just stupid. Beers are open, tunes cranked, totally not paying attention,” Brooks said. “I don’t remember what happened. I missed a corner, and the car hit a road divider and went airborne, hit the ground and rolled multiple times.”

‘nightmare’ Weeks later, Brooks woke up in an intensive care unit and learned that he had been in a crash and that he was paralyzed from the chest down.

“A little bit later, I asked about who was with me and found out my buddy Brendon passed away. That was the worst thing I’d ever heard in my life,” Brooks said. “He’s gone and dealing with that was a nightmare.”

Brooks contemplated suicide but was confined to a bed, too weak to even move.

With the support of his family, best friend and Brendon’s family, Brooks’ outlook began to change.

“It allowed me a chance not to totally give up,” he said of the support.

After a two-month hospital stay, Brooks was transferred to a rehabilitation centre where he learned to dress himself, roll over in bed, sit up and get around in a wheel-

“I could play every sport decently. I skateboarded, I snowboarded, I played hockey. I was just go, go, go, and then all of a sudden, boom, I’m in a chair.”

His future career as an electrician was over, his girlfriend of two-and-a-half years left him and he faced criminal charges from the crash.

“And dealing with the fact that I killed a buddy, there was so much to deal with,” he said.

Brooks pled guilty to dangerous driving causing death; a charge of impaired driving causing death was dropped.

“I lost my licence for three years. There were community hours and probation but no jail time,” Brooks said. “I still look at it as light.”

Brooks said he felt something good had to come from the tragedy, and about two years after the collision, he began sharing his story at schools in the hopes of preventing drinking and driving.

“I used to be a server and I’d be scared if I had 10 people at a table, so getting in front of an entire gymnasium of teenagers was terrifying, but once I started talking, I just sunk into a bit of a groove,” he said.

“Then after, I was just mobbed by kids and they were crying, thanking me and shaking my hand. There was a connection made.”

Brooks has delivered more than 1,000 presentations across Canada and the U.S. “It’s been a saving grace for me to have a positive outlet for what happened,” he said.

“I can’t say I’m proud of the journey that led me on it, but I found it and I just keep looking forward.”

Police, union reach tentative deal

A tentative agreement has been struck between the York Regional Police union and the Police Services Board.

The announcement, after months of meetings, comes more than six months after the collective agreement between the parties expired.

It also comes just days before the two parties were to sit down with a conciliator to discuss the contract on Aug. 3.

“The Police Services Board recognizes the personal commitment and professional work

of York Regional Police members and we are very pleased a mutually acceptable tentative settlement has been reached,” board chairperson Frank Scarpitti said. “We appreciate the collaborative approach that led to a successful agreement.”

It is a tentative deal and must be still be ratified by the members of the association.

The announcement was made amid growing tensions between York Regional Police and its members, who have complained about excessive punishments in regards to their conduct while on duty and what the union refers to as traffic ticket quotas.

Mayor deserves big day following loss of his mom

W

e can only imagine the span of emotions one Justin Altmann is experiencing

this week.

If the creek don’t rise, the mayor of all the people will wed Jenny Hillier on Saturday in a ceremony this train stop has never seen the likes of.

It’s unprecedented here east of the 404, and we guess elsewhere in the GTA, given how downtown Toronto TV crews and reporters from bigcity dailies have been dusting off their GPS units and making the drive north. (“If this is Stewville, then where the heck is the White Church?” we can imagine them saying.)

In case you’ve been consumed by Trump vs Clinton as the crudest of reality TV, the news back here on earth is that our mayor and his bride-to-be have invited the local population and maybe the entire province to witness their coupling in Civic Square Saturday.

The architecturally stunning but relatively unused piece of grandeur in front of Nineteen on the Park hasn’t seen this much action since a gaggle of young people dumped Irish Spring in the fountain and took a communal bath Woodstock style, for those with enough miles on them to remember both affairs.

Expect a crowd, Stouffville.

With ribfest and a blood donor clinic – that’s a mix – also on, I’m thinking of selling my downtown parking spot for the day on Kijiji or Airbnb.

People love weddings and not just for the open vodka bars and chocolate fountains.

The bigger the better and it doesn’t matter whether you’re related or have ever seen one of the participants in the flesh.

My mother and her friends rose at some ungodly hour, put on their Sunday best, nibbled on crumpets in our living room and watched the wedding of Charles and Diana 35 summers ago. I was trying

A group of Stouffvillites travelled to England in 2011 to gush over Prince William’s wedding.

It’s a spectacle. There’s love in the air and maybe confetti and a garter.

But for Mayor Altmann, there’s also the celebration of the end of a life to deal with this week. His mother, Tanis, passed away last Thursday.

It was not unexpected, following a crushing diagnosis of cancer earlier this year. But Altmann’s hopes that his mom would be able to attend his wedding were sadly dashed.

It’s been a busy and not always pleasant year for Altmann. At town hall, he’s had to deal with in-house dysfunction and public spats with at least one councillor.

And then there’s the distinct potential of hiring the town’s third CAO during a term of council that hasn’t hit the twoyear mark.

But for now, he’s got the last-minute groom stuff to do that pops up on the eve of every wedding. And a crowd of a few hundred or thousand to greet on Saturday afternoon in the town square.

You don’t have to agree with Justin Altmann’s politics to appreciate the spot he is in this week.

Cemetery has stories to tell

S

ubjects related to cemeteries don’t make advantageous conversations. It’s a topic most people spurn.

The reasons are obvious.

However, when one reaches the ripe old age of 80, the issue, like it or not, is sure to evolve. It does with me, not necessarily publicly, but certainly privately. I want to make sure my ticket’s purchased; my bags are packed and my destination’s a certainty.

For this reason I regularly visit my final point of terminus, 12118 Tenth Line, Stouffville. This most recent self-selected appointment was just last week.

Strange as it may seem it wasn’t a dreary kind of day. Quite the opposite.

The sun was shining, the birds were singing and a breeze was blowing. Hardly an occasion for melancholy.

Nor was I in that type of mood for I wished only to double-check my, or best I say our, interment site, the one we selected several years ago when Colleen Clarke supervised that department for the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville.

Should I live to be 100, I’ll never forget the pathos Clarke, who now works for the Region of York, displayed as together we discussed the intricate details of our final good-byes.

If she’d been a member of our immediate family, support couldn’t have been more distinct. We left her office buoyed by feelings of relief.

And her trustworthiness remains authentic today. The plots are located beneath the shade of a flourishing maple just as she promised with cornerstones visible and secure.

We couldn’t ask for more.

All cemeteries are unique and Stouffville’s

Roaming Around with Jim Thomas is no different. Our plots are located in a neatlytrimmed westerly area with an abundance of flowers, natural and imitation. The remainder is much the same. An older section, with tombstones dating back to the mid-1800s, is heavily shaded.

There’s history here, some of it tragic, but little we could find of a factual nature. Branch 459 of the Royal Canadian Legion maintains a significant site with 80 memorial crosses bearing the names of deceased World War veterans along with an inscription that reads: “By the grace of almighty God, may all those who pass this way, hold sacred in their hearts, the memories of those who fought and died that we might live in freedom – lest we forget”.

These men and women are venerated annually prior to Remembrance Day. A memorial chapel acknowledging Thomas Williamson was built in 1952, close to the cemetery’s main entrance.

Nearby is a large suitably engraved monument honouring Mr. Williamson and wife Sarah Dougherty.

There’s a story associated with this. Hopefully someone with historical knowledge will step forward and relate its significance.

Open space within the cemetery remains a concern. Matthew Powell, coordinator of licensing and public services, reports 150 plots still available. The likelihood of WhitchurchStouffville taking over burial grounds at Heise Hill, south of Gormley, is under discussion. This would ease current space limitations here.

One of the largest tombstones memorializes 12 members of the Button family including: Major John Button, (1929) and wife Alma Alberta; Frederick Lorne Button, (1956) and wife Ida Maude; Ernest Button, (1967) and wife Agnes; Reginald Button, (1998) and wife Lorna; Janet (Button) Baker, (2001) and husband Norman and Dr. John Button, (2014) and wife June.

A monument that continues to attract much attention celebrates the life of Kenneth “Pops” Ernest Ainsworth, described as “a true hero, coach and mentor” (2002). An accompanying memento reads: “Help me be a good sport in this game of life.

Put me anywhere you need me in the lineup.

If a hard drive comes my way it’s a complement.

You only send a player what he can handle.

I’ll study the book to know the rules.

I’ll accept the hard breaks as part of the game.

If turn of events goes against me and I’m benched for sickness or old age I’ll accept it as part of the game.

I won’t whimper that I got a raw deal.

When I finish the final inning all I want is to believe that I played as well as I could. “ Jim Thomas is a Stouffville resident who has written for area newspapers for more than 65 years.

An open letter to the community of WhitchurchStouffville: Words cannot express how touched and overwhelmed our family is by the amount of support and out reach from our community after our family lost our home (and our beloved dog, Billy) to a devastating fire a week ago Tuesday morning.

Your donations, prayers and encouraging words of support have held a strong place in our hearts, and we don’t know how we can ever repay each and every one of you.

We want to thank fire chief Rob McKenzie and Jennifer Cooper of Whitchurch-Stouffville Fire and Emergency Services and their team of firefighters who responded quickly to the call that night, and who went above and beyond the call of duty for our family, especially our two boys.

Our town of Stouffville is such a special place, and if this had happened to us anywhere else, we are not sure if we would have received the same overwhelming amount of love and support as you have showed us.

Who really wants Elm Road sidewalks?

Democracy and due process have taken a backseat in Ward 4.

The residents of Elm Road are angry and dismayed at the lack of communication perpetrated by the town.

We were “apparently informed” by a piece of paper in February was stuck in our doors or mailboxes that Elm would be undergoing reconstruction this summer and a meeting was to be held in February. When was the last time anyone looked in these mailboxes? Years, I suspect.

Notices stuck in doors likely disappeared in the wintry winds and most people do not stand outdoors chatting with neighbours in the extreme cold so word of mouth was not a reliable tool. If the town truly wanted input from the residents, then it would have been appropriate to mail official notices.

As work has commenced residents have spoken with the site manager, Rick Upton, our councillor, and Curtis Roach, capital projects co-ordinator. All to no avail. We have been informed sidewalks as a retrofit will eat up 10 feet of frontage. Any other ideas have been rejected.

Residents were told we had the opportunity to dissent.

Shifting the sidewalk closer to the street as it is on Millard and other streets, is not an option for the town it seems.

Sidewalk plows are apparently the reason. But residents whose homes have sidewalks are expected to do the shovelling ourselves. So where then is the issue for the plows?

We do not want the sidewalks. Some residents have lived on this street since 1969. Why the sudden urgency for this installation and cost? We chose to live in this area because it lives up to the town’s motto “Country Close to the City” Who is benefiting from this change? Trees will cut down, a loss to the environment. Privacy to homes will be compromised and residents will experience an increase in garbage and animal droppings on the lawns.

There will be a huge economic cost to residents as they will have to replace landscaping, reconfigure driveways to accommodate their vehicles and resurface driveways to make them look uniform. This will also be a huge outlay of tax dollars on something that is not wanted.

Taxpayers it seems have no voice until election time comes around again. Where is the transparency or the accountability in this issue?

It makes one wonder – who is actually gaining from this project. It is certainly not the residents of Elm Road.

Mayor mourning loss of mother The mother of Whitchurch-Stouffville’s mayor has died – one week before his wedding.

Tanis Altmann passed away last Thursday.

She had been diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. She was 59.

You can sign a book of condolences at the municipal offices on Sandiford Drive until Aug. 12. A date for a celebration of life has not been announced.

The mayor and his fiancé, Jenny Hillier, have invited their entire town to their wedding this Saturday. See story on page 10.

The wedding will take place in Civic Square, outside of the Nineteen on the Park arts centre, at 12:30 p.m.

Tanis Altmann worked for The Sun-Tribune as a courier for many years before her diagnosis.

Prayers were said for the Bethesda Road resident at the Stouffville Prayer Breakfast in May and at the Strawberry Festival’s ecumenical service July 3.

“You are and will always be the matriarch and the corner stone of our family and

have been the guiding light who cared, loved, nourished and taught us to be good honest, respectful beings,” the mayor wrote in a tribute to his mother published on his Facebook page last Thursday “You never let a moment pass without telling us how much you loved us and how proud you were of us. You have always been our number one cheerleader and taught us to be a strong and loving family.”

The mayor praised “the staff and friends of Markham Stouffville Hospital and especially Dr. Sarah Barclay and Dr. Henry Solo” for the care provided to his mother.

Citizens are offering support to the mayor and his family. ”Sad. She is still around you and proud of you. Be the best mayor you can be,” Candida Woodruff wrote on the York Region Media Group Facebook page.

Ron Lalonde’s AHL title ring was stolen from his home near Vandorf.

The Whitchurch-Stouffville man whose American Hockey League championship ring was stolen is asking those who took it to give it back.

Ron Lalonde, 63, was away on holiday with his family the week of June 9 to 15 when somebody broke into their Vandorf-area home and took jewelry, including his coveted 1980 Hershey Bears Calder Cup championship ring.

It marked the final year of professional hockey Lalonde played in North America and it was a special season for the nine-year pro.

“Hershey was one of the premier American Hockey League stops,” recalled Lalonde in a phone interview Tuesday.

“We had a collection of older pros and some younger guys on their way up,” he said.

“We had a fantastic year – a so-so regular season; in the playoffs we found our stride and wound up winning the whole championship.”

Lalonde fondly remembered when his original coach, Gary Green, was called up to the NHL club, the Washington Capitals, just 14 games into the season. He said playercoach Doug Gibson took the reins at that point, a situation the older players on the team relished.

“We had quite an interesting team. When

you win as a team, those relationships continue a long time. We’ve had a 25th reunion, a 30th and a 35th reunion down in Hershey,” said Lalonde. “We had an eclectic group of misfits and veterans that we signed including (Brian) Spinner Spencer,” he said.

“This ring means an awful lot and I sure would like to get it back,” he added.

“I hope everyone comes to the wedding Justin and Jen are celebrating,” said Diane Ward, who’s organized the trailer fund and presented the concept to council in June.

“Some [guests] have received black envelopes in which you can put a donation. Those of you who have not received that envelope, that’s OK, we will have boxes here for you to make a donation.”

Guests will have to look for those with special T-shirts and hats to make a donation. The black envelopes have the town’s address on them, making it easier to donate.

It’s not the only means by which Altmann is trying to raise funds for the trailer. The mayor’s golf tournament later this month also aims to make a donation through his community fund.

The mobile washroom trailer will be used by caregivers of children, adults and seniors with severe physical disabilities who cannot move independently from their own wheel-

chairs. The trailer is equipped with a sink, toilet, an adult change table and a lift system.

‘In York Region, there are no public washrooms that are equipped with adult change tables and lift systems.’

The objective is to offer those with disabilities a chance to fully participate in community events “with dignity”, says Derek Bunn, a special education teacher helping Ward and the mayor with the trailer fund.

“In York Region, there are no public washrooms that are equipped with adult change tables and lift systems,” he said. “As a result, children, adults and seniors sit on their wet or soiled briefs for a period of time until they find a place to get changed which usually means going home.”

The total cost of the trailer is $125,000 and it’s intended to be shared around the region but managed by the town.

Councillor cruising Whitchurch-Stouffville Councillor Hugo Kroon will have his own classic ride at the museum car show Aug. 14.

Kroon has owned his car – a dark blue 1967 Dodge Dart – for the past 40 years. He bought it in Toronto from “an old lady who only

ever drove it to church.”

Upon purchase, Kroon immediately modified the car into a street racer, and he still drag races it from time to time.

“I’ve always been a Dodge guy,” he said. “It’s a well put together vehicle, it’s got a big motor, but it’s a light car.”

Whitchurch-Stouffville’s oldest community event enters its 43rd year this summer.

That’s 43 years of local residents and visitors showing off their prized automobiles. The annual antique and classic car show takes place on Aug. 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In case of rain, the show will take place on Aug. 21.

The show is organized by the Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum and Community Centre, funds raised go towards museum programs and town projects not funded by taxes.

Organizer and participant Councillor Hugo Kroon says it’s one of the longest running shows in Ontario.

“It’s one of the ones a lot of guys schedule their summer around, a real family event,” he said. “It’s an important engagement for community volunteers and others at the museum.”

Kroon has helped organize the show for the past 10 years; he also attends as a participant with his own classic car – a Dodge Dart.

He’s been on the museum committee for two terms and continues as the ward councilor for the area.

“One of the most important things we’ve done is gone through corporate sponsorship to step up the fundraising,” Kroon said.

Fundraising expectations this year stand at $10,000, the money goes into a “car show reserve fund” that is managed by the town.

“I find more and more, every other garage in Stouffville has some kind of classic or hot rod hiding in it,” he said.

Admission for automobile exhibitors is free while general admission for adults is $5. Families of four can get a discounted ticket at $15 while children under age three have free admission.

this year include renovations on the Bogarttown Schoolhouse, one of the museum buildings originally built in 1857. Kroon says the extra money helps the museum stay “vibrant and relevant.”

Unlike most car shows, the museum’s show takes place on in the adjacent Vandorf Park. Kroon says the venue allows room for family friendly activities including a band, food and games.

“A lot of car shows tend to be car-centric,” he said. “It’s great to go for dad, but mom and the kids aren’t particularly interested, so we make it as family-friendly as possible.”

The show’s popularity, Kroon says, is in part due to WhitchurchStouffville’s residents and their affinity with classic automobiles.

Montessori student wins writing prize A Stouffville kindergartner has won second-prize in the 2015/2016 National Student Short-Story Contest.

Gavin Ethier of The Progressive Montessori Academy won the prize in the contest held by Polar Expressions Publishing.

He received $50, a winning certificate for his entry “The Three Hawks Got Out” and a copy of the book Flight, which includes his award-winning short story along with the works of other top entrants. The academy has received a matching prize as well.

Polar Expressions showcases the work of Canadian students from kindergarten to Grade 12. For the short-story contest, the publishing company received entries from a thousand teachers from across the country.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimates there are 46,000 severely malnourished children living in the small African country of Malawi.

With its 16 million inhabitants, 90 per cent of whom live on less than $2 a day, managing a food shortage is an overwhelming task.

A Whitchurch-Stouffville-based relief organization aims to help.

Emmanuel International is based in eight countries worldwide with its Canadian office located in on Stouffville Road.

Recently, because of news from their Malawian affiliate, EI has an urgent need for volunteers to assist with food distribution in the country.

Volunteers will spend five months in Malawi working in food warehouses to distribute to surrounding villages. The program begins in September and runs until January.

EI says they seek volunteers with skills in bookkeeping, accounting, clerical skills and those skilled in working in warehouses.

Chefs cook up recipes for hosting backyard dinner

With your backyard beckoning you outside during the summer, chances are you will be inviting family and friends for an outdoor meal at some point over the next few weeks.

Sure, you could take the easy route and throw some burgers and hot dogs, or even a steak, on the barbecue. But what if you want to kick it up a notch and make your meal more special for your guests?

We asked local chefs to each give us a recipe for holding an outdoor dinner party for eight to 10 people.

Jimmy Comfort of Baldwins in Aurora offered his favourite drink recipe from the restaurant’s cocktail list. Tim Pettigrew of Newmarket’s Ground Burger Bar gave us his recipe for a delicious appetizer.

Christopher Waye of the Smokery Kitchen and Bar in Stouffville, provided a recipe for a mouth watering meat dish.

1 tbsp cinnamon 1 tbsp coriander 1 tbsp cumin 1 tbsp fennel seed 1 tbsp thyme 1 tbsp oregano 2 tbsp minced garlic 1/2 cup soy sauce 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 jalapenos, minced 2 tbsp black pepper 1 tsp cayenne pepper 1/4 cup lime juice

THE COCKTAIL

1 tsp salt

Blend all ingredients together in blender till smooth, keep in fridge until ready to use. (Will keep 4-6 days.)

from boiled potatoes and cabbage to a build your own taco stand. Also the recipe can be scaled up with another shoulder quite easily making this recipe versatile and reasonably easy to prepare.

Cube chicken into bite size pieces and place in bowl, cover chicken with jerk marinade, cover and let marinate over night.

Begin by combining spices in a spice mill or coffee grinder. A blender will do the same job.

Cut onion, red pepper, and Halloumi cheese into bite size portions, skewer all ingredients onto sticks, alternating chicken (3pc) onion, (2pc), red pepper (2pc), halloumi cheese (2pc). Once you have your desired arrangement on the sticks, it’s time to hit the grill. Be sure your barbecue is at high heat. Sear all sides of your skewers to get uniform grill marks around them.

Turn heat down to medium and finish cooking till chicken is fully cooked. Serve with wedges of fresh lime and bowl of vanilla yogurt for dipping. Enjoy!

Generously rub the entire shoulder with the spice rub and allow to sit until the roast comes to room temperature, roughly 30 minutes. Rubbing the meat can be done the night before to maximize the flavour.

While waiting for the roast to come to temperature preheat your barbecue to 450 C. Make sure you are cooking on a clean and well-oiled grill.

Christopher Waye’s Bone-in Lamb Shoulder BBQ 5 lb bone-in lamb shoulder

Transfer the shoulder to a shallow baking tray lined with tin foil. Create a small bowl with the foil and add a cup of liquid (stock, water, beer, wine, your choice).

Cover the roast with a loose foil tent.

3 tbsp smoked paprika 1 tbsp cracked black pepper 2 cloves fresh garlic

1 tbsp coriander

(Optional) Add some apple wood chips to the barbecue in a tin foil package. This will add a complex layer of flavour to an already excellent rub.

2 tbsp brown sugar 1 tbsp kosher salt

Once lamb is completed, transfer to a cutting board and loosely cover with foil. Allow the meat to rest for 30 to 45 minutes so the natural juice can be reincorporated.

Pull the shoulder apart keeping large pieces intact.

Bone-in lamb shoulder is a wonderful, inexpensive and flavourful cut of lamb that is extremely tender when cooked properly. If your guests are not interested in lamb then a pork shoulder can be substituted with the same results. I have served this roast with everything

Acton enjoying life in German pro loop

Will Acton’s career as a professional hockey player was filled with plenty of uncertainty when he toiled in North America.

He spent the majority of his time in the American Hockey League and had a proverbial cup of coffee with the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL. These days however, the 29-year-old Stouffville resident and Stouffville Spirit graduate has found a sense of security in his on-ice career.

To do so, Acton went overseas to VillingenSchwenningen, Germany where he made his debut in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga as a member of the Schwenninger Wild Wings last season.

Amassing a solid campaign in which the six-foot, one-inch, 199-pound forward recorded 16 goals and 39 assists and was one of the club’s top scorers, Acton recently parlayed his performance into inking a three-year extension with Schwenninger.

For Acton along with his wife Tara, a Unionville resident and former dancer with the Raptors Dance Pak, Toronto Argonauts and Toronto Blue Jays’ Jay Force, and their 11-month old daughter Macey, that works just fine.

“It’s definitely nice for me and my family,” the son of former NHL player and coach Keith Acton said. “When I played in North America it was more or less a year-to-year type of thing and as you get older its tough to fight for a contract and not knowing where you will play each year. That can be tough on a family.

“Now I’ve got some security and I know where we will be for the next three winters.”

In making the transition to playing in Europe last September after launching his professional career with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL in 2010-11 shortly after graduating that year from Lake Superior State University, Acton was forced to make few adjustments to make upon landing in Villingen-Schwenningen, a town located near Stuttgart and the Swiss border.

germans ‘catching up’ While the club provided residential and vehicle arrangements for Acton, as a foreigner there were some difficulities in conversing with the local population.

“It was kind of difficult at the start because a lot of people in the town were older and did not know English,” Acton recalled. “But for younger people, they learn English in school and it was easier to talk with them and with fans at the rink where they could speak English.”

On the ice, with ice surfaces in Europe being larger than what he had been accustomed to during his time in North America, Acton was forced to alter his style of play to where there was more emphasis placed on speed and skill and less on brawn.

Acton said that at his current age, that suits him just fine.

“When you get older your body won’t break down as much,” he said.

Citing each team is allowed to carry up to 10 import players, of which Acton was one for Schwenninger, he said anyone who has not watched a game in the DEL, which is Germany’s top tier one league, might be pleasantly surprised at the calibre of play.

‘small town feeling’ “The German players are highly skilled, they can skate, shoot and pass the puck,” Acton assessed. “Where Canadians might have an edge is in possessing more natural instincts of the game. But the Germans are catching up.

“Germany has committed a lot of resources to improving their hockey program. It’s really an exciting time.”

As for the atmosphere during home games, Acton described it like a mini soccer match.

“They wave flags and have their chants. It really has a small town feeling,” he said.

Preparing to embark on training camp, which he said lasts five to six weeks in duration and are quite often two-a-day sessions, before embarking on their 52-game regular season schedule, Acton is looking forward to returning to action with the Wild Wings.

For starters, he will be joined this season by his former Spirit, Lake Superior State and Toronto Marlies’ teammate in Simon Gysbers.

Also providing Acton with some added optimism is in playing for a new head coach in Pat Cortina, a Montreal native who once coached the Italian national team and other European club teams.

While Acton acknowledged he still holds some hope in some day returning to play in North America before he retires, he’s quite happy with his current situation.

“Sure you don’t want to give up your dream in playing in North America. But now I’m an older player and we have a nice set up here where I’m earning a living. It’s nice for me and my family.

“At my age now you gain a lot of perspective of things. I now have a positive outlook.”

The Stouffville-based T3R/EHR racing team got off to a promising start on the Want Group Raceway track for the NASCAR Pinty’s Velocity Prairie Thunder 250 in Saskatoon last week.

Unfortunately for Jason Hathaway, who was behind the steering wheel of their Raybestos/HGC Chevrolet, they experienced mechanical difficulties during the stretch run of the 250-lap event and were forced to the sidelines with a 17th-place result Wednesday.

Qualifying eighth in the starting lineup, Hathaway made quick work of the cars in front of him as he moved up the running order. Then trouble hit.

“We had a car here that we could have won with tonight,” he said. “We have had a wicked string of bad luck this season and I hate it for this team and our sponsors.

The boys worked hard to get this car right after the accident in Edmonton and we had a great thing going....”

In the overall series, Hathaway is in ninth place with 212 points. Andrew Ranger leads the series with 289.

The series resumes with the Can-Am 50 Tours on the Circuit de Trois-Rivieres in Quebec Aug. 14.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES • Reporting to the Circulation Manager • Maintain your assigned area of responsibility, which will included a contracted carrier force and all houses within the boundaries that are assigned by the Circulation Supervisor.

• Ensure that all newspapers, inserts, and other distribution products are delivered in a timely manner. This includes working closely with the carrier force and when necessary could include delivery of down route(s).

• Recruit and train new carriers to ensure that all routes are covered and terminate contracts where appropriate. Maintain sufficient carrier waiting lists or establish new ones.

• Maintain all records concerning carriers and routes including financial records and complaints • Address customer concerns in a professional and timely manner while ensuring the concerns are resolved and the carriers are aware of the concerns • Investigate and resolve delivery issues where required • Drop off supplies to carriers including elastics and carrier bags as required.

A

lice Daxon was a teaching assistant working with children with disabilities in a Newmarket school when she met nine-year-old Clayton in the early 1980s.

Afflicted with Costello syndrome, a rare and severe genetic disorder that left him with multiple disabilities, Clayton was about the size of a one-yearold baby.

He had been raised in an institution, but in 1980, the province passed legislation governing special education, including requiring school boards to provide programs for children with exceptional needs.

Bused in from the institution, Clayton was placed in Daxon’s classroom.

“We took one look at each other and it was love at first sight,” she said.

Clayton couldn’t walk or talk, but he crawled along the floor, sat on Daxon’s foot and wrapped his arms around her leg.

Daxon began bringing him home for weekends under a community living program.

Her family, including husband Ken and their children, Tracey, Krista and Corey, embraced Clayton into their lives.

But on Sunday nights, Clayton would sob and clasp Alice’s hand when she and Ken drove him back to the institution.

“It broke our hearts to take him back in after having such a full weekend. And we had to put him right into his crib again. That’s where he was for nine

years, in a crib,” she said.

“My husband said, ‘We’ve got to bring him home.

We can’t leave him in there. What do we have to do?’”

The Daxons committed to having Clayton live with them for two years in their Newmarket home.

He was still living with Daxon family when he died Jan. 29 at the age of 42 in Sharon, where Alice had moved after Ken died in 1999.

About three days after Clayton came to live with the family, Alice feared the arrangement wouldn’t last.

Corey and a friend, who were about 12, took Clayton for a ride in a wagon, but they flipped it over on a curve and sent Clayton flying.

Their case worker arrived a few days later to make sure Clayton was settling in, leaving a mortified Alice had to explain his injuries.

Fortunately, the case worker took it all in stride, saying if not for the Daxon family, Clayton would never have had the chance to play and get hurt like any other child.

The years ahead would be filled with struggles as Clayton dealt with his illness, but also love and adventures, including family vacations and a trip to Disney World.

Clayton wasn’t formally diagnosed with Costello syndrome until his 20s, and was one of only four people in the world known at that time to have the disorder.

Clayton, who could only speak about a dozen words, used an assisted device computer to communicate.

Living with the Daxons, he learned to eat solid

food and walk, although that would only last about a year before his hips gave out. He then used a walker in the house and a wheelchair when he was outside.

He had surgeries on his hips, heel cords and hamstrings and suffered from severe scoliosis of the spine.

“He tried so desperately. He fought his whole life to try to do everything that he couldn’t do,” Alice said.

As a teenager. Clayton threw himself into activities at Sacred Heart Catholic School, joining the school band and playing the bongo drums and xylophone in school concerts.

He loved cooking and baking in home economic class. In his family, Clayton became known as the cupcake maker because he loved to help bake the treats for birthday parties he helped organize.

A fan of slapstick comedy, he was known for his infectious laugh, his love of WWE wrestling and his woodworking skills. With assistance, he made gifts such as birdhouses and crafts.

“I always used to say about him, he was an ambassador for the disabled. If he had any one job in life, that was it and he did it so well,” Alice said.

In Grade 9, Clayton met his best friend, Marty Nichol, who was by Clayton’s side all through high school.

“He was like Clay’s brother and he became like my son,” she said.

Even when Nichol moved away, he sent homemade videos pretending he was taking Clayton on adventures.

Clayton was a gift, someone who made everybody happy despite his struggles, Alice said, adding

“Everyone said how lucky he was, what a beautiful life he had,” Alice said.

“We all got so much back from Clayton. He taught more than he was ever taught. I think he was a gift. He had a purpose and he served his purpose well on Earth.”

Residents within municipal boundaries using “Newmarket” as their municipal name (as part of RR3 Newmarket) will be changed to Whitchurch-Stouffville and will also be given an “L4A” postal code. The rural service code in Newmarket is to be removed.
