Whitchurch-Stouffville town council has approved a five-year human resources strategic plan in the wake of 30 staff members leaving the corporation since Jan. 1, 2015.

The HR plan, approved by council last week,

came in response to increased media coverage of town staff departures, which was also discussed at the meeting, town officials said.

Town CAO Marc Pourvahidi — who has since gone on an undefined leave of absence — was not present for the Tuesday council meeting.

However, several employees from human

resources, including HR manager Pavlina Thompson, were present.

Thompson — who is the town’s fourth HR manager in the past 12 months — outlined the plan to council, as well as major concerns See 30, page 12.

A Newmarket judge has deemed a 21-year-old’s time already served as having been plenty, after he was found guilty of stabbing an acquaintance with a machete after he allegedly “glassed” the man’s brother.

Tyler Wirag was handed a sentence of time served last week, including the 12-month pre-sentence custody time served for aggravated assault.

For this he was handed 24-months credit.

Wirag, from Musselman’s Lake, was found guilty of a brutal attack on Stouffville hockey player Kyle Sauro, who was left with parts of his organs sticking out of his stomach, resulting in a huge scar on his torso and lasting medical problems.

Permit parking favoured by council

Finding a place to park in Stouffville is about to get easier.

Town council approved the final report on the on-street residential and commercial parking study at a meeting last week.

The study focused on major areas of concern: signage and “wayfinding”, lack of a parking permit program, customer service practices and protocols to educate residents, and providing consistent parking enforcement.

The study provides recommendations on how to address the above issues.

Now that it’s approved, the town can

implement several short-term and longterm solutions to parking issues.

“The two short-term priorities identified and marked by council are signage/ wayfinding and the implementation of a permit parking program,” said project lead and customer services manager Tamara Carlson.

Staff will report back to council with short-term solutions by the end of May.

Skate club’s grant request denied, referred to events’ committee Council decided at a meeting April 19 to deny the grant request of $2,000 from

the Stouffville Skating Club to support its Ice Show on May 6 and 7.

Instead, Councillor Rick Upton suggested offering a $500 grant to offset costs of renting Stouffville Arena during the show dates.

A deduction from the fee could not be made but a grant to curb the costs is possible. The club is billed for their usage 30 days after each rental.

Councillor Ken Ferdinands suggested it was best to refer the matter to the municality’s special events advisory committee after member Anand Date spoke to council regarding the matter.

Council agreed and the matter was passed to the committee.

The incident began while the pair attended a house party in Gormley with hundreds of young people in August 2013.

During the party Sauro heard Wirag had spat on one of his female friends.

After propositioning a fight between the pair, Sauro was told to avoid Wirag as he had a knife.

Sauro backed off, but then heard his younger brother Kameron was glassed in the face by Wirag, causing a huge gash.

On the way to hospital or home, the car carrying Sauro and his brother Kameron came across the car carrying Wirag.

The two vehicles became embroiled in a car chase involving speeds of well over 100 km/h on Stouffville’s Main Street, before arriving at the home where Wirag was living.

Sauro said at this point Wirag and two other men exited the home armed with machetes, pellet guns and an extend-o-bat, a device that resembles a police baton.

Sauro then recalls running away before being stabbed. As he lay on the floor, he further recalled perhaps the trial’s most frightening memory — Wirag calmly walked towards him with the machetes drawn.

Although the machete sheath was found, the weapons were never located by police.

Wirag has also been given a 10-year weapons ban and one year probation for breach of recognizance. The sentence puts to rest an ugly chapter in WhitchurchStouffville’s largely peaceful history.

Sauro’s father, Darryl Sauro, would not comment when contacted by The Sun-Tribune.

A Whitchurch-Stouffville company will have to flush $500 in fines for stealing water from a King Township hydrant last year in the first case of the township pursuing a case of water theft through the courts.

Ontario Hydro Vac pleaded guilty to the water theft in a Newmarket courtroom last week, according to a release from the Township of King. The company faced a fine that ranged from $100 all the way up to $50,000.

“We take the issue of water theft extremely seriously,” said Kathryn Moyle, Township Clerk and Director of Clerks and Bylaw. “It poses a serious health and safety risk and costs the municipality lost revenue.”

Township staff noticed that somebody had illegally hooked up to a hydrant on Melrose Avenue in King City on Oct. 29, 2015. They

took a picture of the hookup, including the truck being used. That enabled bylaw officers to investigate and eventually lay a charge of using a municipal hydrant without a permit.

John Vandenberg, King Township’s water and wastewater compliance engineering technologist, said there are negative impacts to water system due to illegal hook-ups: • Contamination of the drinking water through pressure reduction or back siphonage.

• Failure of hydrant(s) in fire situations due to damage caused by unauthorized access.

• Overall damage to municipal water infrastructure through improper operation of the hydrant.

• Cost to the municipality due to lost revenue from the stolen water.

King is asking people to contact the municipality if they see suspicious activity around fire hydrants.

When an obituary hits home like an old song

I

‘ve been reading a lot of obituaries lately.

And that’s with no offence to the multitude of fine reporters and columnists filing award-winning copy to this news organization and others.

In this industry, we know submitted death notices and letters to the editor have always been some of the bestread items printed or posted.

Obituaries are often unfiltered, fascinating life stories, sometimes revealing information found nowhere else. They can inspire, entertain and educate.

Perhaps it’s a product of my own advanced age and the people I choose to associate with, but the obituary hits home now more than ever.

There’s the old joke about people reading death notices in their morning paper just to make sure they’re still alive.

(Yes, I’m here all week. I hope.

Please, tip your servers.)

My father, who died three years ago at the age of 95, would recognize so many names in the death notices, he wondered who would be left to attend his funeral. He needn’t have worried.

I flew home to Thunder Bay last week and was reading the obits in the hometown daily when I stumbled upon a name from the past. It jumped off the newsprint like a Raptors’ three-pointer.

It was that of a friend from high school and university.

Despite promises to the contrary, we had lost touch following a chance meeting in downtown Toronto in the early 1980s.

According to the write-up, he settled in the Peterborough area where he worked, helped raise two girls and performed good deeds in the community.

That sounded right.

Until cancer took him, if I’m reading between the lines accurately.

I teared up then broke into a grin, recalling a weekend to

Four of us somehow piled into a Toyota Celica for the seven-hour drive into the bright lights of Minneapolis.

We did what college kids do.

We ate and drank bad things.

Saw the NHL North Stars play before they moved to Dallas and simply became the Stars.

Caught concerts in intimate theatres by future arena rockers Kansas and the magnificent Robert Palmer.

We frequented a former Greyhound bus depot turned nightclub that Twin Cities’ favourite son, Prince, would make legendary in the movie Purple Rain.

Nothing earth-shattering here.

But maybe a reminder.

Hug your kids. Then hug them again.

Call your parents — and not just on mother’s and father’s days. Better yet, visit them.

Reach out to friends. Make new ones and not just on Facebook.

Robert Palmer died in 2003.

He was 54.

You probably already know, Prince died last Thursday. He was 57.

And my old friend Chester is up there with them.

W h i l e politicians have yet to accord Whitchurch-Stouffville this once-authorized distinction, (but later Country Close to the City), the proof is in the listening. Not a week or a weekend goes by without this self-assumed claim to fame attracting public attention and attendance.

And hopefully the same enthusiasm will apply when Stouffville Cares hosts a community concert this Sunday at 7 p.m., in the auditorium of Stouffville District Secondary School.

Adult admission is $10.

Young and not-so-young, representing a cross-section of our town, are giving freely of their time and talents in an effort to augment the coffers of the Syrian refugee fund.

The Fandis, a father, mother and four children from Syria via Jordan, are currently benefitting from earlier outpourings of generosity and a second family is now on the guest list.

While not a member of the original Stouffville Cares committee, my Jimmycome-lately association has been warmly received. So much so they’ve allowed me a free hand in organizing Sunday’s show. With amazing responses from everyone involved.

“Thanks for the privilege of being a part of so rewarding a cause,” has been a common reply. However, in a town possessing a wealth of musical talent, the procession of participants is only the tip of the iceberg. There are countless others waiting in the wings.

Grade 8 students conducted interviews with local residents, some of whom have lived here all their lives.

“We were hoping for a mix of prominent people and ordinary people; working people and retired people; a range of ‘older’ ages,” explained program director Brian Puppa. “The result was amazing.”

May is definitely Music Month in WhitchurchStouffville.

In addition to the community concert Sunday at Stouffville District Secondary School, four additional performances are scheduled.

May 5 at 7 p.m., the Stouffville District Secondary School wind symphony will share the spotlight with the SDSS choir ‘Spartan Sound’ in hosting their spring concert.

May 7, the Bach to Blues company will stage two concerts at Stouffville’s Christ Church Anglican, one at 2:30 p.m. and another at 7:30.

The appropriate theme is ‘A Salute to Moms’. The barbershop quartet ‘Aristocrats’ will share the stage.

May 14, Stouffville’s own Men of Note male voice choir will host its annual spring concert at Christ Church Anglican. Time is 7:30 p.m.

May 26, ‘Diamond Elvis’, (Rob Frank), will take over at Nineteen on the Park for two performances at 3 and 7 p.m. Proceeds will go to the cancer unit, Toronto’s Sick Children’s Hospital.

June 29, the annual Music Festival held in conjunction with Strawberry Festival Week will take place held at 8 p.m. in Stouffville United Church. Don’t dump on Pickering, Stouffville Re: Stouffville residents fearing Pickering cell tower, March 24.

While I support completely the concerns of Rishi Patel regarding the construction of a cell tower so close to a residential area in Stouffville, I have to say, don’t dump on Pickering.

The residents of Pickering are more familiar than any regarding the establishment of unsafe and unpleasant developments in their town.

In 1973, when we moved to Whitby, they were fighting the airport, a subject that is still not dead and something that the residents of Stouffville should be equally concerned about.

Then there was the dump, accommodating the garbage from Toronto. That fight went on for most of the 24 years we lived in Pickering.

The most recent issue, which started several years before we moved up here in 2010, was the construction of a trunk sewer system to accommodate waste water from York Region, which necessitated tunnelling underground throughout the town and the construction of access points right in the middle of residential areas. It went ahead in spite of protests.

Currently, a cell tower is being constructed in the shopping plaza at the corner of Whites Road and Strouds Lane. Look at that location on Google Maps and see what’s around there. Homes, homes and more homes.

It’s the owner of the property who consents to the construction of these towers.

Stouffville council should have known about this long before now.

Bottom line? We elect our councillors, but they don’t always have our best interests at heart when other issues come into play.

Dogs, SUVs out of control on forest trails As many folks know, the Whitchurch-Stouffville area is fortunate to have a number of beautiful regional forests within our boundaries. While the most popular activity seems to be dog-walking, they are open to all non- motorized activities and offer a chance to get outside, in nature, for free.

The bylaw for the forest clearly states that dogs “must be on a leash, or in control, at all times”.

As a runner in the park, I would like to point out that your gaggle of punters, nipping at my ankles as I outpace you to the muzak of your “Phoebe, Phoebe COME here” is not technically in control.

Your cross-mix, brindle-bristling Bosworth style, foamy spittle flying as it rapidly closes the distance between you and me? Not in control.

I shouldn’t have to yell “Get” in the loudest, most scurrilous voice I can muster to get your dog’s face away from my, er, posterior. You get the picture – not in control.

While I must give thanks to the many residents who are respectful, know their dogs and make sure all is well, sadly, these folks are in the minority.

It is a curious conundrum that as a taxpaying resident of Whitchurch-Stouffville for 17 years, I can chose between getting bit by your dog, or pegged by your SUV – all for the heinous crime of running.

Maybe the bylaw should read “respect and common courtesy”.

This week our culinary adventure takes us to Mexico, and we’re going to be there while they celebrate Cinco de Mayo, a day similar to Canada Day for us. I have been to Mexico but once and that was to visit Cabo San Lucas to play some really amazing golf courses. A few recollections are: a) I saw no restaurants that had a roof b) swim-up bars aren’t so good during happy hour c) there are snakes lurking in the bushes just off the fairways, and d) margaritas sneak up on you!

While I was at the hockey rink last week, the big chef from our golf course (who's a hockey fan as well) allowed in conversation that he had run out of avocados for the menu and he had bought some from us.

Don’t leave your electrical appliances plugged in if you’re not using them, Stouffville.

It caused a fire in the shed of a Main Street house that caused a temporary road closure and covered the neighbourhood with a strong, smoky smell Monday.

The homeowner’s son told The SunTribune that around 1:30 p.m. his mother noticed smoke rising from their back yard shed. That’s when she called 911 and within minutes three fire trucks were at the scene, just east of Summitview Public School.

Damage was estimated at $5,000, said Stouffville fire prevention and public education officer Jennifer Cooper.

The homeowner had left “a number of things” plugged in via an extension cord,

including a grinder and a battery charger for a cordless drill, she said. Cooper said it was difficult to establish whether the fire was caused by an appliance or because of a shorted outlet.

“We want to remind residents not to use extension cords on a permanent basis,” she said.

Firefighters subdued the fire, leaving a burnt, cracked and soaked shed with most of its stored items charred and black. They continued to “overhaul” the sides of the shed to find any smouldering material that may have remained.

Smoke could be seen from downtown.

Cooper reminds residents to replace smoke alarms every 10 years, as they have a lifespan. Smoke alarms are checked by firefighters regardless of the location of a fire — even in sheds or garages.

CAO on leave 30 town workers left since 2015

Town of WhitchurchStouffville Chief Administrative Officer Marc Pourvahidi is on a personal leave of absence, the municipality announced Friday.

The former town treasurer, who took on the role of CAO on May 5, 2015, was not present at the April 19 council meeting.

“At this time the duration of the leave is undetermined,” town spokesperson Glenn Jackson said Tuesday.

Town council announced the appointment of Fire Chief Rob McKenzie as Interim CAO Friday. He will hold the role until May 9, Jackson said yesterday.

“We are very pleased to have the chief step in on an interim basis to fill the CAO’s position,” said Mayor Justin Altmann in a media release. “He has displayed exemplary leadership at the fire hall and we trust he will bring those skills into town hall.”

Pourvahidi became the municipality’s third CAO in two years when he took the job one year ago. He was first named acting CAO in March 2015 when then-CAO Andrew McNeely went on administrative leave.

McNeely resigned April 21, 2015 after 12 months on the job. McNeely took over for Dave Cash, who became the town’s CAO in 2006. He unexpectedly retired in 2013.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING THE REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY OF YORK DEVELOPMENT CHARGES ACT, 1997 On Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 9 a.m. York Regional Council will hold a public meeting pursuant to the Development Charges Act, 1997.

The purpose of this public meeting is to receive input on an area-specific bylaw for imposing wastewater development charges on property owners in the Village of Nobleton, in the Township of King.

Development charges are fees collected from developers that help pay for the cost of growthrelated infrastructure, including water, wastewater, roads, transit and police, paramedic and public health services. The proposed Nobleton area-specific development charge will fund growth-related infrastructure for wastewater services in Nobleton.

York Regional Council will consider the enactment of a proposed Development Charges Bylaw applicable to lands in the Nobleton community at a subsequent meeting.

Key vacancies include development services director, planning manager, economic development officer and downtown co-ordinator, council members were told in an update this week.

Council overwhelmingly agreed on the importance of implementing the new plan and thanked Thompson for her work in human resources last week.

Winters, who ran unsuccessfully for council in 2014, asked Thompson if she could identify patterns in staff departures. Though some are outlined in the HR plan, Thompson explained further.

“The turnover has been huge,” she said.

“We’ve had 30 exits, terminations and resignations. We also noticed there were 42 staffing changes.”

Unlike HR departments in most municipalities, including Thompson’s prior posting in Clearview near Collingwood, WhitchurchStouffville’s HR department is part of the office of the CAO, placing the CAO as the direct supervisor.

“In this organization, HR is not a standalone department, it reports and has to make decisions through the CAO,” Thompson told council.

“I cannot make high level decisions, I don’t even get to sign job offer letters,” she added.

Councillor Iain Lovatt called the HR plan a “breath of fresh air” after admitting that the current situation was “embarrassing”.

Councillor Rob Hargrave asked Thompson if it would be better if HR had its own department, to which Thompson replied “absolutely”.

Council agreed to cover any additional costs in implementing the HR plan. Thompson and other HR employees present were praised for their work by council.

Rising through town staff, she was appointed deputy clerk on Jan. 2, 1979 and replaced Ralph E. Corner on Dec.11, 1979 to become town clerk.

She took on the town’s then most senior administrative position on July 8, 1986 when council appointed her to the role of clerk co-ordinator.

Oakes retired on April 6, 1990 after 23 years of service to the municipality. She and her husband Ted Oakes, the first solicitor for the Region of York, retired in Trent Lakes.

Town staff and council were unanimous in expressing their gratitude for her years of work and their sorrow for her passing.

The third annual show is on this weekend at the Stouffville Arena on Ninth Line.

The 14th annual Whitchurch-Stouffville Community Christian Prayer Breakfast is set for May 19 at Station Creek Golf Club. The breakfast starts at 7 a.m.

“It’s driven by citizens as opposed to any particular church,” said organizer Dennis Seeley. “We’ve had folks from other churches, professional hockey players, politicians, it’s been a variety since we started running it 14 years ago.”

The event will feature guest speakers Dave and Linda Halse from Relationships Support Ministries. They’ll be assisted by Pete and June Yates as they give their presentation on the topic “Enriching and Strengthening the Family in the 21st century.” Relationships Support Ministries counsels on family and relationships.

A performance by accomplished singer and songwriter Quisha Wint is also planned. Wint has been singing from the age of 6, beginning at church. She’s been a Stouffville resident for the past 10 years.

“I feel very honoured to have been asked to perform,” Wint said. “It’s a great way to connect with people in the community. You’re getting a great breakfast and you’ll hear some wonderful music.”

After the guest speeches and performances, there will be a prayer held for “the nation, the local area, for the youth and for newcomers,” Seeley said.

Spring is the optimal time to plant trees on your property – but did you know that planting the right tree in the right place can help you save energy?

Putting it in the appropriate location is also a safety measure. Consider these tips before planting.

1. Plant tall-growing trees at least eight metres away from power lines. Tree contact with power lines accounts for about 30 per cent of power outages in Ontario.

2. Deciduous (leaf-shedding) trees provide shade from the summer sun to cut down on heat gain, but lose their leaves in winter to let sunlight enter your home and maximize solar warmth and light. Plant them to the south and the southwest around your home’s windows to provide shade from late afternoon and evening sun.

Malcolm Graham was quiet family man

n his quiet way, Malcolm Graham could light up a room with his smile and had a way of making anyone he spent time with feel special.

Malcolm died at the age of 68 on March 25 at Southlake Regional Health Centre from complications three weeks after suffering a heart attack.

The Grahams came to Newmarket in 1973, shortly after Malcolm graduated from Western University and a chartered accountant apprentice program with Pricewaterhouse in Toronto.

They moved to town when Malcolm was offered a job with accounting firm Cossar, Hector and Payne on Main Street.

They did have a tie to Newmarket since his wife Mary Beth’s parents, Gordon and Helen Ough, were born and raised in town and her grandfather, Jack Nesbitt, had been the mayor in the mid-1920s and again in the early 1930s.

Malcolm and Mary Beth met in Blenheim District High School near Chatham when he was in Grade 11 and she was in Grade 9.

It was love at first sight.

“We met in high school and dated and that was it,” Mary Beth laughed.

“He was very handsome, a fabulous smile, very athletic, just a nice guy. I don’t think you’d find

Malcolm Graham anybody that would say anything negative about Malcolm. He was one of those people, very giving in a quiet way, but always had time for people. Didn’t matter if it was business-wise or friends or neighbours. Just in a quiet way, he would be there.”

They married on Oct. 29, 1966 while Malcolm was still at Western.

The couple, parents of sons John and Jeff, would have celebrated their 50th anniversary this fall.

When they first moved to Newmarket, Malcolm got involved with the Lion’s Club.

In 1975, he and some friends founded the York North Racquet Club, a squash club that raised the hackles of some for its men’s

only policy.

“There were a lot of women who were not very happy with that group, not happy at all. It didn’t bother me, but there were several others that were not too happy about it,” Mary Beth said.

“It was a group of guys, there were some professional people and all kinds of great guys. They just decided they needed something (for men).”

Initially, Malcolm, who would go on to establish accounting firm Bateman, Graham, Fitzpatrick on Davis Drive, was an avid squash player, but his interest waned as work demands grew.

He also looked forward to an annual ski vacation with friends to

Despite the pressure of work, from which he never retired, Malcolm loved spending time with family and friends at the cottage they have had in southwestern Ontario since 1977.

“That was a big point for all of our family. It was always a very special place for everybody,” Mary Beth said.

The whole family, including John and his wife, Connie, and their children, Mackenzie, Ireland, Conner and Liam, and Jeff and his wife, Susan, and their children, Georgia and Jack, loved spending time at the cottage.

“Family was huge (to Malcolm).

I just think he was very proud of what all of them have achieved,” Mary Beth said.

“Particularly, for the grandchildren, I think (the cottage) is a fun place to be, you’re that next generation. He enjoyed them all. He loved having them around, loved having them at the cottage. Lots of boating, lots of swimming, lots of sailing. It was wonderful, really. A lot of family time. Malcolm worked really hard, but we had some real quality family time. Those are good memories.”

Sadly, Jeff died six years ago at the age of 40 of a brain tumour after being diagnosed 12 years earlier.

When Jeff died, his flag football league started a memorial golf tournament in his honour, a venture the family helped support.

Initially, proceeds from the tournament went to the brain foundation. For the last three years, it has raised about $200,000 for the hospice at Southlake Regional Health Centre.

“Those kinds of things were really important to Malcolm. You wouldn’t find him out there being the big cheerleader saying, ‘Hey look at us, what we’re doing’,” Mary Beth said.

“It was always just in a very quiet way. It was huge for him to be giving back.”

Malcolm will be missed by family, friends, neighbours and clients, Mary Beth said.

“He was probably one of the most generous people I’ve ever met. Very kind. Always put other people ahead of himself. Even at the office, if people came in with even just the smallest problem, it didn’t matter. He would take just as much time with that person as he would with someone with a very complicated problem. Everybody felt he was giving his all,” she said.

“And he had the most wonderful smile. It just made everyone else smile. He could just light up a room with that smile.”

Chances are milk doesn’t last long once the summer comes along on the Carrick family farm near Stouffville.

Or anything else in the fridge, for that matter.

It’s primarily in the summer that the four Carrick boys are back home together, since three of them are in the midst of hockey careers, including the youngest, Josh, a 20-year-old defenceman with the Barrie Colts.

Carrick is aided by experience gleaned from the other three, who also played in the Ontario Hockey League, but is attempting to accomplish something none of the others were able to; namely, win the J. Ross Robertson Cup, presented to the OHL champions.

“I definitely feel like they paved a little bit of a path for me, but once I came into the league I kind of wanted to make a name for myself,” says Carrick, a stay-athome blue-liner who has become a regular in his third season with the Colts.

“It was definitely a bit of a battle my first couple of years, but the competitive aspect of me helped bring my game up a bit.”

The family, which founded McAsphalt Industries in Toronto, moved from Stouffville to rural Goodwood in 2008, to

a small farm “out in the boonies, a nice quiet spot,” Carrick says.

Carrick was drafted in the seventh round, 142nd overall by the Colts in 2012 and spent the next season with the Stouffville Spirit in Tier 2 before jumping up to the OHL, but played only 68 games over the next two seasons with a perennially strong Barrie team.

Finally given a regular role this season, Carrick has been mostly part of the team’s third D-pairing with Cameron Lizotte, putting up 2-13-15 stats in 63 games with a plus/minus of +28.

Although admittedly not much of an offensive threat, he scored twice and was named first star in a 5-2 playoff win over the North Bay Battalion, helping his team to a five-game quarter-final victory.

“I definitely kind of surprised myself with that too,” he jokes of the multi-goal

game. “I was just getting pucks through and on net, and definitely some lucky bounces there as well.”

The Colts finished second in the Eastern Conference with a record of 43-220-3 and are facing the fourth-place Niagara in the semifinals after the IceDogs’ shocking sweep of top-seeded Kingston.

The IceDogs are led offensively by shifty forward Josh Ho-Sang, whose incredible talent is well known to Carrick from having been teammates together in minor hockey.

“I personally definitely know the skill that he has,” Carrick says of Ho-Sang, who has 15 points in nine playoff games.

“It’s definitely scary, but I think if we stick to our game and play steady defence, we should be able to shut him down.”

Carrick’s oldest brother, Jake, has moved on from hockey and now works at McAsphalt, while the other two are in the American Hockey League, Sam with the Toronto Marlies and Trevor with the Charlotte Checkers. Both saw time in the NHL this season, Sam with the Leafs and Trevor with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Carrick could be back for an overage season in the OHL next year, but for now is focused on the task at hand, and it’s a big one. Niagara won the first three games heading into Game 4 last night in St. Catharines.

Cycling squad out to Conquer Cancer during summer rides

Terry Eizinga loves to ride a bicycle.

And not just for fun.

While the 50-year-old Stouffville resident was a club rider during his younger days, the competitive fire in him has resurfaced of late.

Only this time around, Eizinga is riding for a meaningful cause — in the Ride to Conquer Cancer.

The cause hits close to home as Eizinga‘s family has been hit by the dreaded disease.

One brother-in-law received treatments at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto and another is in the later stages of his own battle with cancer.

A family member asked him to take the Ride to Conquer Cancer.

“I knew I had to be involved,” he said.

known as Purpose Driven Cycling, that completed a 200-kilometre trip to Niagara Falls raised over $30,000.

“That was a great start,” he said.

This year, Eizinga was asked to lead the squad.

After stepping down from his role as Whitchurch Stouffville Softball Association president and coach after last season, he juggled some personal responsibilities and jumped all in.

Establishing some rather high objectives, Eizinga noted they have already surpassed the number of riders they originally wanted.

That being 16 with a current total of 18, including 14 from Whitchurch-Stouffville.

They hope to more than double the amount of funds they raised last year by aiming for $75,000.

In an effort to do that, he said their team will ride in three events in the next several weeks, with the big one being the Ride to Conquer Cancer from June 11 and 12.

As a means of tuning up for their schedule, Eizinga noted Stouffville Joint Venture allowed their team to utilize their training facility during this past winter.

To raise awareness of their objectives, Eizinga said their team will have a booth at the Stouffville Home Show at the Stouffville Arena this weekend, Friday to Sunday, where they will feature riders from their team along with spin bikes for the public to try and a contest.

From there they will continue their awareness efforts at the parking lot of Schell Lumber May 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Terry Eizinga is leading a charity cycling team that has 14 Whitchurch-Stouffville residents on its roster.

The final event, he said, is an online auction taking place from May 1 to 15.

The Stouffville District Secondary School Spartans varsity girls’ rugby team retained their title at the York University Lions Den Tournament after reeling off three victories and one tie at York University Friday.

The Spartans reeled off wins over Sacred Heart (Newmarket) three tries to none, St. Marguerite d’Youville (Brampton) two tries to one and Senator O’Connor (Toronto) three tries to none. The tie came against Mayfield (Caledon) at one try apiece.

Anna Horner led the Spartans’ with four tries while Alexa Feasby had three and singles went to Lauren Halse and Denise Laghavi.

Spartans’ co-coach Jim Monk was pleased with the effort given by his defending York Region Athletic Association champs.

“The girls were awesome,” he said. “They played really strong defence throughout the tournament, creating multiple turnovers.”

In particular, he praised the work of their back row comprised of Vanessa Mainella, Kate McClellan and Kaylene ThompsonBruce along with the play of Destiny Brown in the set piece.

The Spartans are scheduled to commence their YRAA Tier One schedule at Bill Crothers in Markham Thursday at 3 p.m.

Boys get ready for regular schedule The Spartan junior boys tuned up for their YRAA Tier One season by taking part in the Saltfleet Tournament at McMaster University in Hamilton Friday.

Fielding a 35-player squad comprised of Grade 9 and 10 students, the Spartans lost

against Brantford 15-0 and then fell to Medway (Arva) 25-0 before edging Guelph 5-0.

The Spartans concluded their tournament appearance with a 30-0 loss to Lorne Park (Mississauga).

Rhys Garlough scored the lone try for the Spartans in their win.

“It’s still early in the season yet and we want to try and get the kids in the right position and give them as much playing experience as we can,” said Spartans’ coach Jamie Hewitt.

The Spartan junior boys are scheduled to begin their YRAA Tier one season at Dr. J.M. Denison (Newmarket) next Thursday.

The Spartan senior boys will kick off their Tier one season against Newmarket High School at St. Maximilian Kolbe in Aurora Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
