The fact that councillors from the town’s "rural" wards weren’t in favour of paying money to stop the GO train whistles was not surprising. With little benefit for their constituents, it could be expected for the town’s rural councillors to speak out against such a measure. After all, they are not the councillors getting angry phone calls from residents since the GO train started late night service. What the matter did illustrate was the town’s rural population is grossly overrepresented at council. How much so?

"You have to have a big heart and want to put kids on to the next level," said Hyman. "It’s up to people to decide if they want to watch it. The hockey is there no one has changed it."

Jim Thomson acknowledges he and wife Rita purchased the Aurora Tigers three years ago to provide a place for their sons to play, a trend that permeates through the league.

"Like the NHL, it is a competitive sport although at a different level," said Thomson, who played in the NHL for parts of seven seasons. "You’re not getting rich owning a Junior A team. There’s no money in it.

You have to love what you do and have a passion. We work our tails off to break even."

The OJHL adopted a pay-toplay model a few seasons ago with players paying up to $6,500

per season. It helps but the reality is that teams operate with annual budgets ranging from $200,000 to $400,000.

"It’s a great development league and great hockey but as a league we have to get healthier," said Thomson, who says he has received offers from potential buyers in other centres. "It’s a difficult model. This will be a tell-tale season for us. We’ll see if the town supports us. Some

towns are dying to get a Junior A team."

Initially, current Newmarket owners Tony Comparelli and Anthony Cella, who purchased the team in November 2013, offered live music performances and a licensed lounge to attract fans. That tactic lasted part way into their initial season.

Like most teams, the Hurricanes strive to be visible in the community. Volunteering, school appearances, helping and mentoring minor hockey programs are all intended to connect teams to potential fans.

"I was surprised at how much of a disconnect from the community so my thing was to start building relationships, to get loyalty and respect," said Eric Cella, brother to the owner, who is in his second full season as Hurricanes’ general manager and director of hockey operations.

"It was a surprise to me that the team is not accepted. I think now there is a group of Newmarket people excited about how our team will be this year."

"I’m trying to create a small town Jr. A club in a big city," said Cella. "We want players in Newmarket who want to be Hurricanes. That’s what we’re trying to do - get kids loyal to our players and want to be Hurricanes.

Once a league leader in attendance, the Hurricanes averaged under 200 fans per game last season. It is a sore spot with Anthony Cella.

He hopes a six-game playoff series against the top-seeded Trenton Golden Hawks which saw crowds triple in size carries momentum into the 2017-18 season.

"I think if you have a connection with the community and a winning product on the ice, fans will start to come to games," said owner Cella, pointing to a top ticket price of $10 this season.

"Newmarket is a different kind of place. There are a lot of passionate fans so I think it can be turned around and increase our fan base."

ockey is supposed to be Canada’s game.

Collectively, we love the sport as played at the junior level.

So, why is selling Junior A hockey so difficult?

The Region of York is home to four of 22 Ontario Junior Hockey League franchises - Aurora Tigers, Markham Royals, Newmarket Hurricanes and Stouffville Spirit. Making them run are owners who struggle to make it work. On a good night, a couple of hundred fans will pay to watch albeit many are likely to be family and friends.

The reward?

Well, there are no television rights at this level on the Hockey Canada food chain. Despite developing talent for both the Ontario Hockey League and NCAA, there is very little monetary reward for advancing players to either levels. With crowds across the league measured in dozens, gate receipts barely cover game day expenses.

So, what gives, Hockey Nation?

Representatives for all four franchises were asked for their views on the subject. Three responded, Stouffville Spirit being the exception.

"All we can do is concentrate on producing good players people can appreciate," said Royals’ owner Stu Hyman, who transferred his Hamilton Red Wings to Markham three years ago.

"Our league is all about development and providing a stepping stone to pro or even the next level.

"At the end of the day we always would love to have more fans but that’s the same at any level. I don’t worry so much about attendance as much as we are a service to Markham and try to provide a good program people in Markham can be proud of."

"It’s not really an issue for junior hockey. It’s a pro market.

People want to see the Maple Leafs but there are avid fans that hook on to our team, too."

Do you take a chance and drive to the local hospital emergency room, possibly waiting for hours on end, or take a gamble on another hospital further away?

Karen Mulvey lives in Keswick and works in Vaughan.

She asked us, through CONNECT, whether the province’s new wait times registry will make it easier to decide where to go for emergency health care.

The answer is yes – and no.

If you live in York Region, you have three emergency room (ER) options: Newmarket’s Southlake Hospital in the north, Mackenzie Health and Markham Stouffville in the south. If you live in the northernmost parts of the region, Royal Victoria in Barrie may be a fourth option.

The province has created a new online tool that provides wait times for these, and 122 other ERs and Urgent Care Centres in Ontario. You can visit ontariowaittimes.com to get an idea

of how long a patient needing immediate, unscheduled health care can expect to spend in an ER. However, that information is not posted in real time (it’s updated on the second last business day of the month), and it can’t tell you the time you will spend in ER on a particular day.

Only patients heading to Markham Stouffville Hospital can see estimated emergency wait times in real time, thanks to a tool on the hospital’s website, msh.on.ca Royal Victoria is currently reviewing that technology to see if it would be beneficial for

Barrie, according to Paula Istead, operations director, Emerg e n cy a n d I C U. M a cke n z i e Health will also consider the service, spokesperson Catalina Guran said.

Meantime, the best provincewide data says you can expect to wait the longest in the ER in the wee hours of the morning.

At Mackenzie Richmond Hill hospital, busiest days for the emergency depar tment are Sundays and Mondays (or Mondays and Tuesday after the long weekends), Guran said. Longest waits are usually around 10 a.m. until noon and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

At Southlake, there is not

one particular day or time that is the busiest, according to the hospital’s strategic communications consultant Kathryn Perrier.

It is also difficult to pinpoint the busiest days and times at Royal Victoria, said Dr. Natalie Cousineau, chief of emergency.

“We typically see and treat up to 300 patients each day, making us the busiest ED in the region,” she said. “We service a huge geographical area, are situated on a very busy main highway and deal with a large influx of seasonal patients due to our proximity to cottage country.”

In general, urban residents tend to wait longer in ER than people living in rural areas, according to a study by Health Quality Ontario.

Karen Mulvey thinks there would be value in a real-time clock that would allow residents to compare hospitals and avoid the “brutal” wait times.

“What happens now, people get there and wait for hours and leave angry. At least you’d know g o i n g i n a n d m ayb e wo u l d choose not to go, to wait and go to your doctor during business hours instead.”

The answer from Christine Terin, manager of marketing and communications at YRT: YRT Route 320 - Newmarket-Beaver Creek Express was implemented on Sept. 6, 2016 as per York Region Transit’s 2016 annual service plan.

This express route connects Newmarket and Aurora with Beaver Creek and Commerce Valley employment areas via Hwy. 404. It operates during weekday rush hours at a frequency of 35 minutes.

Ridership has steadily increased from accommodating approximately 26 passengers to approximately 37 passengers daily in the last three months.

YRT/Viva monitors new services for a minimum of 12 months of operation to ensure they meet service standards.

JULIE ASKED: What has happened to the big fountain, sponsored by the Newmarket Rotary Club, that used to run in Fairy Lake? It hasn’t been on all summer and we miss it.

The answer from Jeff Bond, Newmarket parks manager: The fountain was damaged due to the large amounts of rain during the week of June 19, June 22 and June 23.

The fountain was eventually carried away by the heavy flow of water.

Newmarket staff tried to recover the fountain, but efforts have been discontinued due to safety concerns.

A READER ASKED: When is the City of Vaughan going to widen Hwy. 7 between Kipling Avenue and Wigwoss Drive? It is the only stretch of Hwy. 7 that is still two lanes.

The answer from Thomas MacPherson, manager of transportation asset management at the Region of York: At this time, there are no immediate plans to widen this section of Hwy. 7. Future rapid transit is identified for this section of Hwy. 7, but there are currently no immediate plans and timelines for the stretch. In my brief and ill-fated foray into the realm of Tinder, I would often spark conversation by asking people what they considered to be the most underrated fruit. While 11 years at a repeat position should be sufficient training, the initial day back at my crossing guard post was a supreme test.

On the first morning of the first day of school (Sept. 5), a record 635 people crossed the Stouffville intersection of Millard Street and Glad Park Avenue.

As a shared responsibility with fellow guardian Gerry McGuckin, this half-hour duty can tax the mental and physical expertise of any individual, let alone someone plagued by two festered feet.

While I can’t speak for my conscientious companion, the blister problem was quickly cured two days later thanks to a 45-minute treatment administered

by Donna Shewfelt of Stouffville Family Footcare. She had me cavorting like a spring lamb the following Friday.

But not without a harsh reprimand.

"Why did you wait so long?" she lectured.

Truthfully, the disorder wasn’t provoked by my return endeavour.

The ailment had beleaguered me throughout the holiday period but not so seriously that I needed to seek a cure.

Returning to the workforce was the impetus required. Now, all’s well.

With respect to the parade of people, not all were students. Some were parents, grandparents and caregivers, perhaps as many as half.

Besides, I’d run out of fingers and toes in a loosely prepared headcount. Regardless, the numbers far exceeded anticipated statistics.

On day two, the total had thankfully dwindled to less than 500.

While one shouldn’t draw conclusions so early in a season, if the initial week is any indication, the young people returning are equally characteristic of those who recently left - polite, respectful and patient.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the boys and girls I’ve come to know are a credit to our community. And the same goes for their parents, many of them new Canadians.

To assume this conclusion, all one needs do is acknowledge the thank-yous and recognize the smiles. These virtues alone help make this part-time vocation worthwhile. I find it strange more residents, now retired, don’t give it a try.

But let’s not forget the tolerance of tightscheduled bus drivers and urban-bound commuters who continually find themselves bumper-to-bumper in standstill traffic. Their patience deserves medals.

While some still insist on making illegal lefthand turns from Glad Park Avenue onto Millard Street during morning and afternoon crossing times, their numbers are decreasing.

And this is good.

LAURA FINNEY lfinney@yrmg.com From octopus tacos to burgers and fries, the Whitchurch-Stouffville Food Truck Frenzy offers more than just the typical street meat.

"We have a great selection of vendors," said Joan Crosbie manager of culture and community services for the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville.

"We offer a few unique things, and a few traditional things."

The frenzy will include 20 trucks from across the Greater Toronto Area with

a variety of foods, including Stuttering John’s Smokehouse serving up smoked meats, bison sausage and poutine; Little Chef offering crab cakes, butter chicken and lamb roti; and Buster’s Sea Cove making octopus tacos, lobster rolls and key lime pie, said Crosbie.

And that is just a taste.

There will also be gourmet grilled cheese, chicken and waffles, wood fire pizza, Italian sweets, vegan and vegetarian options and so much more.

This is the second Food Truck Frenzy event this year, Crosbie said about

4,000 people attended the first event held on June 22.

While some of the trucks have been here before, some will be new.

"We like to change it up a little bit so it’s different every time you come," said Crosbie.

This event will be taking place Sept. 15 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Memorial Park.

It will be in a new location this year, moving from Main Street, where it was held in previous years.

"We found there were problems with having it on Main Street, it becomes crowded," said Crosbie.

"Seeing people on a curb

eating their dinner, it just didn’t seem as nice as I wanted it to be."

The new location offers more space, so people can spread out and children can run around.

"We are providing at our event a large picnic table area, so we’re encouraging people to stay," she said.

"The event is very family oriented, very family friendly."

Along with the food, there will be live performances from musician Stacey Renee, face painting and children’s entertainment.

Hiking HST for cities a bad idea, but what’s better?

Even the Ontario premier’s staunchest allies will agree that’s not a description that is often applied to Wynne. And yet, you can thank her for saying an abrupt ’no’ to a request from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) which would have seen the harmonized sales tax (HST) go up by one per cent in order to fund municipal infrastructure improvements such as roads, sewers and arenas.

No doubt this is not what Wynne had in mind when she told municipalities to work together on developing new sources of revenue to make a dent in municipal infrastructure gaps. Increasing the HST from 13 to 14 per cent is not among the options she is prepared to consider. Not with an election around the corner and polls showing the Liberals are inching back into contention with the Progressive Conservatives.

A bad idea motivated by good reasons is still a bad idea. Increasing the HST is not something any of the major political parties are willing to consider. Especially not the Liberals who have been criticized for previous tax increases, and especially not with a hotly contested provincial election just around the corner.

But here’s the thing: While this idea was doomed from the start, the problem it was intended to address is all too real and getting more serious. Municipal officials have been warning for years that towns and cities cannot afford the growing cost of infrastructure maintenance and development. With increasing concern about liability, insurance costs are becoming prohibitive, leading to public facilities in some communities being shuttered. Roads, sewers and bridges across the province are in need of serious upgrades and repairs. This hits smaller communities with small tax bases hard, and only adds to the larger, better-documented burden placed on cities like Toronto.

In most communities, the gap between need and available investment is growing incrementally every year. Provincially, it’s pegged at $4.9 billion. How will municipalities keep up? They don’t have the myriad of revenue options the province has. But for most municipalities, the options are few: increasing user fees, reduce services or increase property taxes. None of those is a sustainable strategy. They leave property taxpayers not only in Toronto but across the province with an untenable burden.

There is no question. Municipalities need more options. Where are the solutions that are palatable to all involved?

Power reports don’t aid conservation Re: LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Power reports don’t boost conservation, Aug. 10.

I would like to echo Mr. Fehr’s concerns about Alectra Utilities’ (formerly PowerStream’s) ’Power Reports’.

I, like Mr. Fehr, have been trying to reduce my hydro consumption through improved practices. There is no information in these reports that can be acted on. There is a lack of transparency on how the comparisons are made. In their FAQ about how homes are chosen for comparison, they state: "We’ve chosen specific homes that are nearby and have characteristics that typically lead to similar energy needs."

However, istics are not disclosed.

At least, there should be a time-of-day breakdown which they can report on without additional information about the households. And, of course, when I’ve called and asked about replacing the meter because I thought it was at fault, that is not an option.

I am a mother of three and grandmother of seven, so I know full well the decisions I had to make in my life to fulfil what I wanted and to make sure my children had the best care possible, either with me or with a responsible child care facility.

I’m afraid you have to choose!

Nearly a week after a fire broke out at Whitchurch-Stouffville Town Hall, there are few answers as to what happened.

Town Fire Chief Richard Renaud said the department is still investigating the cause of the fire with assistance from the Ontario Fire Marshal and York Regional Police.

A fire broke out at WhitchurchStouffville Town Hall early in the afternoon on Sept. 6.

Employees were evacuated from the building and nobody was injured.

According to Renaud, the fire started in the plan examination room. A number of planning maps were damaged, but Renaud said the extent is still being assessed.

The fire itself was contained to the maps area.

As far as monetary damage, Renaud said the fire only did minor damage with the tab being around $10,000 for new carpet and paint.

That total could rise to $35,000 if the town’s map plotter is permanently damaged.

Renaud didn’t comment if the fire was deemed suspicious.

The town had closed the planning department for the remainder of last week, but staff are back at work after the incident.

Renaud was name the town’s new fire chief this summer after former chief Rob McKenzie retired.

MICHELLE DEL CARMEN Elaine Vollett, founder of The Centre for Dreams, was honoured as one of the recipients of the Canada 150 Sesquicentennial Pin on Aug. 29 by Markham-Stouffville MP Jane Philpott.

Canada’s 150 Sesquicentennial Pin is given to outstanding individuals in the community throughout Canada.

Recipients in Markham-Stouffville were selected based on their contributions to the community with special focus given to the Canada 150 themes of promoting a diverse and inclusive Canada; supporting efforts towards national reconciliation of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians; reaffirming the importance of strong environmental stewardship;

and engaging and inspiring youth.

Philpott said of Vollett as she presented her with her pin and certificate, "You have made this community better. You have impacted the lives of so many people in the community and it is my pleasure to present you with the Canada 150 Pin." Vollett is no stranger to having big dreams, taking one step at a time. Her vision 26 years ago was to have a centre in the heart of the Markham community servicing about 20 adults living with developmental disabilities. Her dreams have become a reality and then some. Her Centre for Dreams services adults from all over York and Durham regions, and there are just under 40 adults enrolled in the program. In

2006, Vollett was the recipient of the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship. Her story, essentially the story of the Centre for Dreams, is an inspiration for all - Always Dream BIG, never lose sight of your accomplishments, and learn from all of your setbacks.

The Centre for Dreams is a day program for youth, adults and seniors living with developmental disabilities. The mission of the centre is to integrate its members into society as they rightly deserve. The programs offered are focused on providing the members the chance to experience a wide variety of opportunities, develop personal and social skills, gain valuable work experience, and contribute to their community in whatever ways they can.

Whitchurch-Stouffville election, Ward 6, Stouffville’s largest ward and home to the Reeves Way and Hoover Park rail crossings, had 9,062 eligible voters.

Ward 1 had 2,753 eligible voters and Ward 3 had 2,433 eligible voters. Ward 6 was more than three times the population of both wards 1 and 3 in 2014. Ward 4 was more than double the population of both wards 1 and 3 in 2014. The town doesn’t have the current numbers, but since 2014 the vast majority of population growth has been in wards 4 and 6, so the numbers will be even worse in 2018. You would think town council would think this is a pressing need to be solved, but not everyone feels that way. While Kroon said he is a "great supporter" of proportional representation, he said the rural areas would lose their voice if the wards were made equal. "Even though they

would continue to pour massive amount of tax dollars into the town, they would have no say as to how it would be spent," he said. Ferdinands didn’t bother to respond to repeated requests to comment on the uneven population distribution of the wards. Ward 2 Coun. Maurice Smith said he had no comment on the matter.

Ward 4 Coun. Rick Upton said he didn’t see a problem with the current arrangement.

The majority of the town’s council aren’t bothered that one ward will be four times the population of two other wards in 2018.

The foremost experts in Ontario on ward boundaries, Profs. Andrew Sancton and Robert Williams, disagree and call the current Stouffville ward arrangement grossly unfair. "This is highly unusual. I haven’t seen anything this far out of line," Sancton, a professor at the University of Western Ontario said. While the pop-

ulation of the wards does not have to be equal, Sancton said the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) has used the benchmark of within 25 per cent in their past decisions.

"It’s my view this would be an easy appeal to win at the OMB if someone took it up," he said.

Williams, from the University of Waterloo, is quite familiar with the town’s wards. He was hired and gave recommendations at the town’s last ward boundary review in 2009 that went largely ignored. "It’s highly unusual that this has been allowed to continue," he said. "It’s simply not fair."

Ward 6 Coun. Rob Hargrave remembers 2009. He said it seemed like they were actually going to make some changes, but in the end, a couple of councillors got together so they could keep their own fiefdoms. "It’s unfortunate," he said.

One of the those councillors was former Ward 4 councillor Suzanne Hilton.

She said she didn’t like the new ward boundaries proposed by Williams at the time because it cut the rural people out of her ward. "I felt that was a valuable connection," she said.

Williams said that kind of thinking is what leaves Stouffville in the situation it is now. "The ward system is completely outmoded and inappropriate for how the

community has changed," he said.

While Mayor Justin Altmann acknowledged the uneven distribution of the wards as an issue, he said he would like to see fewer councillors. "I think we have too many councillors," he said.

Altmann suggested trimming the number of councillors from six to four and moving from a ward system

to an at-large system. Hargrave echoed Altmann’s suggestion.

The problem with the current system is the Municipal Act leaves council in charge of ward boundaries, Williams said. If you look at the federal or provincial levels, riding boundaries are looked at every 10 years by an independent body, he added.

"It’s glaringly obvious the province has no interest in getting involved," he said.

When reached for comment, a spokesperson from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs said, "Ward boundary matters are best addressed at the local level.

Municipalities have the authority to make alterations to their ward boundaries under the Municipal Act." The OMB is responsible for hearing appeals to municipal bylaws regarding ward boundary changes, and can also receive petitions from a municipality’s electors.

Magna Corral in Aurora is about to get a country makeover.

The Magna Hoedown is just around the corner and will bring two days of food, entertainment, and music.

It will get an early start Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the Student Hoedown, an invite-only event for students with disabilities.

The doors will officially open at 6:30 p.m. and the lineup will include the Hoedown Showdown Talent Competition finals; a performance from last year’s showdown winner, 16-year-old Mac Shepherd from Georgina; and line dancing. The evening will wrap up with a performance by headliner Chad Brownlee.

Sept. 16 will open at 5 p.m. and will kick off with a line dance and performances by the showdown winner.

Other performers include Dani Strong, James Barker Band, and headliners Tom Cochrane with Red Rider.

The hoedown will also include a Texasstyle barbecue dinner, prospector’s raffle draws with a $100,000 top prize, food trucks, and more.

Sixteen-year-old Mac Shepherd from Georgina will perform at the event, having won the talent competition last year.

All proceeds from the tickets sold will support 20 York Region charities, nonprofits, and community groups.

Check out these local Terry Fox Runs LAURA FINNEY lfinney@yrmg.com It’s been just over 37 years since Terry Fox took his last steps during his Marathon of Hope in Thunder Bay after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres of running.

He might not have made it across Canada, but his bravery and fundraising efforts continue to inspire future generations.

Last May, The Terry Fox foundation announced more than $715 million has been raised to support cancer research in Terry’s name.

This year, the Terry Fox Run will take place in communities across the country Sept. 17.

Everyone is welcome, regardless of athletic abil-

ity or age.

There is no minimum entry fee, but participants are asked to fundraise or make a donation. Funds can be raised online, with a pledge form or in person during the run.

Markham Markham’s run will take place at the park behind Unionville Library.

Registration starts at 9 a.m. and there is an open start from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. with an opening ceremony and warm up at 9:40 a.m. There is no parking on Library Lane, and limited parking at the library, Unionville Pond and behind the shops on Main Streets. It is transit accessible. There will be

water stations, face painting and local music. The route is bicycle, stroller and wheelchair accessible. Dogs must be on leashes. The route distances are 1 km, 5 km and 10 km.

Stouffville Stouffville’s run takes place at Memorial Park.

Registration begins at 12 p.m. at Latcham Hall, and the mass start will begin at 1 p.m. There will also be an open start from 1 to 3 p.m. Parking is available and the site is York Region Transit accessible.

Snacks and refreshment will be provided and there will be entertainment on route and activities for kids. The route is bicycle, stroller, Rollerblade and wheelchair accessible.

The route distances are 2 km, 5 km and 10 km.

While only three per cent of York employers plan to hire workers from October to December, 10 per cent expect to lay off staff, said spokesperson Maple Kyriacou of Manpower’s Markham office.

Another 87 per cent of employers expect to keep their current staffing levels.

Once seasonal variations in staffing levels are accounted for, the region’s employment outlook is a 20percentage point decrease compared to the previous quarter, Kyriacou said.

One More Day: A tribute to Keith Grose DALE GROSE-MARTINEZ & HELEN RATCLIFF Keith Grose’s many dear family and friends spent agonizing days and sleepless nights prior to his release from this life into the next on Aug. 29. We were all riding a roller-coaster of mounting hope and dips into despair: it felt like the earth had been pulled out from under us, despite our assurance that Keith had built his life on solid ground.

The shocking realization that he was to leave us hit each of us at a unique time and place, in a moment of terrible loneliness and unspeakable loss. Each relative, friend, church member, neighbour and colleague processed that knowledge and felt his heart break in his own way.

My personal meltdown came on my flight out of Nice, Wednesday at dawn.

Moving eastward through the Alps, we entered the most beautiful of sunrises over the Matterhorn. The sky was ablaze with shades of orange, and the mountain peaks resembled islands in a sea of clouds. I thought, "My brother will never see another sunrise. Could he not have been given one more day?" I had a long, stifled cry as I considered what he might have done with just one more day.

He would probably have stopped in to Tim Hortons to pick up doughnuts and cookies for the guys at work. He’d have run non-stop at the mill, doing several things at once: sorting out problems, making deliveries, coming up with new ideas, organizing his employees, and offering customers expert service with a smile.

Brother’s death is a reminder that each day is precious. he’d have headed into Stouffville, maybe doing more errands on his way. He might have taken the time to chat with a neighbour, but he’d have been ready for home and some "Katie time."

No matter how busy or tired he was, he always let her know that she was the best part of his day. After tackling a few items on the "to-do list," he’d have helped Patty with dinner: barbecued steak and strawberry-spinach salad were two of his specialties. Out on the deck that he’d built and furnished with style, he’d maybe have taken his 15 minutes of R&R, with one eye on the barbecue and the other on the TV. Then, up to Bloomington Church to lighten up a business meeting, or over to Mom’s on a mission.

He’d have held his sweetheart, Patty, and they’d have shared their day. If he had talked to a sibling, he’d have ended the call with "I love you." Conversations with buddies would probably have included wisecracks, an imitation, or a foreign accent.

There would also have been moments of meditation and prayer, which we hope were not concurrent with driving. His mind would likely have raced with new ideas and projects well into the wee hours, making sound sleep scarce ("it’s a Grose thing").

And so, it might have been just a normal day, a day filled with what William Wordsworth called "That best portion of a good man’s life; his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love." Just another precious day.

The Oak Ridges Moraine, where you’ll find the highest points of elevation in York Region, was primarily formed by the Wisconsin glaciation about 12,000 years

YORK-DURHAM LINE The region’s highest elevations are clustered near Hillsdale Drive.

The highest point, estimated at 380 metres above sea level, sits west of this dead-end road. Several sand and gravel pits occupy this area. You’ll enjoy some decent views to the north and south as you drive in this area.

DUFFERIN STREET On the east side just north of Lloydtown-Aurora Road in a rolling field is a giant cellphone tower perched on a spot more than 360 metres high. Tall trees block the surrounding landscape, but there’s a spectacular view as you travel west along Lloydtown-Aurora Road.

KING SUMMIT ROAD This aptly-named road, off Jane Street near 16th Sideroad, leads to a spot on private property reaching 363 metres. Across Jane Street is the Environment Canada Weather Radar Station - home to Doppler weather radar, visible from Hwy. 400, that resembles a giant golf ball - also on a site about 360 metres.

STRAWBERRY HILL TRAIL This private road on the east side of Weston Road runs off a steep hill and leads to a site with an elevation of 361 metres. It isn’t accessible given it’s on private property, but this stretch of Weston Road offers great views north and south.

HWY. 48 The former dump site north of Bloomington Road boasts a high point of 355 metres. It’s across the street from Maples of Ballantrae Golf Club, which has heights of around 350 metres. Travel west along Bloomington Road for a nice panoramic view of the Toronto skyline.

Bike storage lockers coming to commuter lots ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com The provincial government is taking steps to try and encourage more commuters to use pedal power to travel at least a portion of their journey.

To that end, it’s spending $2.5 million to install bike storage lockers at 15 commuter parking lots and 28 bike rooms at 26 GO Transit stations over the next four years.

There are two sites in York Region being outfitted with eight "secure" bike storage lockers each - the Go train station at Highway 404 and Greenlane in East Gwillimbury and the carpool lot at Highway 400 and Highway 7 in Vaughan.

They are scheduled to be installed by the end of March 2018.

Bike rooms, designed to increase storage capacity and security, will be built at the GO train stations in Aurora, King City, Markham and Unionville.

The bike rooms at the Markham and Unionville stations are slated to be ready by spring 2018 while the ones in Aurora and King City will be in place between mid-2018 and the end of 2020.

"This investment will make cycling more convenient and appealing, and will encourage more people in Ontario to bike as part of their daily commute," Steven Del Duca, minister of transportation and MPP for Vaughan, said in a news release.
