September is one of our favourite month’s as it signifies new star ts We have many, many bir thdays in our house in September, including a rather large one for me which I am choosing to both ignore and embrace in equal measure
Inside this month’s edition we have received lots of ar ticles, news items, letters and family announcementsWe absolutely love the fact that you include us in all of your life events, achievements and conversations Thank you to ever yone that takes the time to get in touch
We have a special feature written for us this month by Janet Fielder from Respite at Home - Janet is their local volunteer and we thought it would be great if we all found out a little more about his incredible local charity
Lastly, thank you so much to Paula Jewell for lending us the magnificent picture of St Peter ’s Church in the sunshine as our cover for September! Until next month..

We have been asking all of our readers to pack us with them on their travels this year, just to see how far we can get! We were delighted to receive this picture from deliver y volunteer Julie who asked her neighbour Sarah to take us along on her trip to Iceland! Here we are pictured in front of the water fall near Akureyri, Iceland! Thanks Julie & Sarah! - just stunning!!
Readers of last month’s magazine will recall the incedible stor y of young sisters Lola (6) and Immie (3) and their challenge to climb Snowden to raise funds for the Garden House Hospice
We are thrilled to repor t that the climb was successful with Mum Harriet telling the Stotfold News Magazine; “We star ted the climb at around 8am, star ting strong, stopping ever y 1km, handing out snacks and Barbie plasters as briber y!” “Once we got to the half way point, we had a good sit down and a rest, however it got ver y scrambley with Immie who is under 1 meter tall, climbing up a lot of it on her hands and knees as her legs were just not big enough.” “As the girls climbed the last step to the summit there was a round of applause and cheers from fellow climbers, it was really really lovely.
”The girls raised a fastic £650 for the charity - We think they are amazing!

Ten years ago I saw an adver t in the Stotfold News Magazine for Respite at Home Volunteers Mid Beds & Ivel Valley, and I haven’t looked back since! Volunteers visit, befriend and give suppor t and advice to people in our community who are coping with terminal and life limiting illnesses
I currently visit two families each week in this area Sometimes I visit for a couple of hours, and other times longer We sit in and chat, play games, or I read to them Other times I hone my wheelchair skills, and we peruse the streets for fresh air, coffee and cake, or a visit to a local pub After diagnosis, treatment and care plans are put in place, patients and their families can often become isolated in their homes and from their communities. Our job is to provide respite for those that are caring for loved ones.
We are always looking for more volunteers in the Arlesey area. If interested in joining us, please email respiteathomevolunteers@aol.co.uk or call 07483 376077 and leave a message. We would love to hear from you.
Par t of what we do involves fundraising - if you are holding a local event and we are able to come along please do let us know!

Dear Editor,
After seeing their adver t in the June edition of Arlesey News I booked on Orange Henn’s day trip to the Isle of Wight on the 13th July I have to say that I’d recommend this company to anyone interested in their wide range of trips I travelled with my brother and we were picked up outside Ruth’s Coffee Shop in the High Street exactly on time. We met up with the rest of the group, including Richard Henn the organiser, at the Dutch Nurser y in Hatfield and made our way to the Isle of Wight for a lovely day out. Richard and the driver, Mar tin, were ver y friendly and helpful and I’d encourage your readers to take advantage of the Stotfold pick ups, which I don’t think any other coach companies offer and which do away with worr ying about public transpor t or finding somewhere to park.
Kind regards, Mick Barnett
Editors Note: How wonderful that our adver tisers always offer such good ser vice to our readers - Two great testimonials this month!

Anyone with children probably has their lives governed by the rhy thm of the academic year Ditto anyone like me who has spent years in working in schools or attending multiple years of university as a ‘mature’ student! And so September has a new- season feel to it As I type this in the scorching heat of early August, I have no idea where the seasons will be in terms of our weather come September And I do not know where anyone is in terms of personal seasons; ending, beginning or transition; we’re all somewhere amidst that But, ever y ending offers a new beginning, some of which are more welcome than others, depending on our personal seasons and preferences. Even the star t of school signals the end of the summer holidays. This may bring var ying responses from students, staff and parents alike!
What I do know about new seasons is that they shift the daily rhy thm of life, inviting us to immerse ourselves within a new flow. Any new season involves at least one thing stopping/reducing for another to begin/increase. It offers the oppor tunity for a new flow that may work better for us than the old one. It invites us to review what previously went well, alongside what didn’t. In taking the time to identify these, we can make active choices for change where this is possible. This may involve reducing some of our daily activities and commitments as well as increasing others. This can star t with an over view of how we are spending our time and energy along with what is immovable and what is not. Time is always precious. Time spent reviewing how we spend this can be time well spent indeed!
A new season offers the chance to begin again, differently

Each month we like to introduce you to another of our wonder ful Arlesey & Stotfold News Magazine adver tisers - this month we are talking to Michelle Moss from Bandit’s Pet Shop.
Michelle, many of our readers will have seen lots about Bandit's Shop on facebook as we know you are a regular on there promoting all things Bandit! For those that are unaware of what it is you do, can you give us a brief outline of what Bandit's shop is all about?
In the beginning …..When I stopped Secondar y teaching after 19 years and I star ted my dog walking business I also decided to star t a small shop sideline to suppor t the walking. I decided against home made treats and so decided to get various wholesalers lined up star t some Facebook selling and I expanded slowly. During Covid, my doorstep deliver y ser vice and weekly special offers meant my shop exploded with a massive bang - demand was suddenly huge. I now actually have a shop room - viewing is by appointment due to my dog walking - and I now am a natural dog treat specialist with doorstep deliver y available on a Friday
We can't have you take par t in this feature without us asking the question! Who actually is Bandit!?
Bandit is my 28th foster dog who I knew was always going to be my keeper! I wanted a collie and he was the first full collie I fostered - he is a Heathlands Animal Rescue from Ireland Bandit comes on 2 hours a day of my walks and has trained most of the puppies that I walk for recall He is also the chief taste tester for products in my shop, a role he takes ver y seriously!
We know that as well as the shop, there is another side to the business which is equally as impor tant to you - Can you tell us a bit more about this?
Fundraising and helping animal charities means a lot to me As my dog walking and shop got busier I was not in a position to foster as much as I wanted So I thought of a way I could combine
my shop to help fundraise The solution came to me one day on a dog walk - I would make the 1000 club This was my shop doing a monthly raffle and raising £1000 for a charity and then my shop customers voting in the next charity to raise £1000 for Over time we have evolved the Charity choices to being registered and within 30 miles of Arlesey as I have a stronger desire to suppor t smaller local charities as they really do need the most help We are currently in the process of completing the £1000 for Luna Animal Rescue and the next Charity is in a nomination process. Each ticket is £2 and £1 goes direct to the charity and £1 covers the cost of products - I do not take any thing from the raffle proceeds at all and tr y and promote the fundraising as the more tickets sold the more raffle prizes which in turn means more funds raised for the charities.
You obviously have a love for Animals Michelle, are you surrounded by lots of animals at home?
Not as many as I would like!! I have grown up having dogs - Guinea pigs , rabbits and cats So when my children were small we also star ted with fishthen guinea pigs and then hamsters and gerbils - we now have a bearded dragon and a leopard gecko I just have the one dog Bandit - but as I’m a licensed boarder I also board and have day care for the dogs that I walk So I get lots of cuddles Bandit is my second rescue dog, my first one Jessie came from the Kimpton Blue Cross She died at17 years old - it took me a while to choose my next forever dogso I fostered first until Bandit ( my 28th foster dog ) came along Bandit’s Shop can be found at www banditspetshop co uk - you can also follow them on Facebook where details of the 1000 club can also be found
Nature Reser ves - In the Arlesey Old Moat and Glebe Meadows Nature Reser ves we continue to ensure access around the looping path network and removing low brush between the meadows to encourage movement of insects and butter flies Whilst growth in the two meadows is high currently we have previously worked to prevent the encroachment of thick bush and brush and we will again be assisted by the cattle later in the year
We have been managing some of the large trees and fruit trees in Pix Green which have flourished this year, thanks, in par t, to the input members received from the Bedfordshire and Luton Orchard Group. Early this year, after speaking with local residents, we decided to leave this valuable green space to naturally seed and grow over the Summer, hence the currently ‘wild’ appearance! But we will be cutting back the brush in a Work Par ty on Sunday 18th August to help us manage it over coming months.
Paths - Since our last ar ticle we have also had work par ties on the bank of the River Hiz behind Amenity Trees (ARL/2/30) and improved access from the High Street towards the railway bridge to the Mill Pits (ARL/3/10) and nor th on the permissive path towards the Nature Reser ves. Work has included litter picking, mowing, cutting back brambles and other overhanging branches. The nettles on the permissive paths remain the most challenging area due to lack of access and more rugged nature of the paths, now requiring a greater number of volunteer hours.
Thankfully we have had some new volunteers join us, some trained in using the machines and others volunteering for work experience and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme We will continue to make good use of these offers of suppor t in coming weeks
One of our members, Doug Landman, has asked that we take the oppor tunity to highlight a threat to some of our visiting birds and appeal for help
Swifts are summer visitors, arriving in May and staying until August They spend their lives in the air, only landing to nest and breed, and never perch on wires They are dark brown with no obvious white patches and fly making high-pitched joyful screaming calls They are a gardener's friend as they catch around 20,000 aphids, midges, etc , in a single day to feed their young, they leave little or no mess, and are ver y quiet in their nests Sadly, Swifts are on the red (danger) list of conser vation and have lost breeding sites (which they return to year after year) due to house renovations and demolitions, and new buildings not incorporating swift bricks in the walls Between 1995 and 2019 their numbers have plummeted by 62% and they desperately need our help to sur vive One solution is the installation of swift boxes Advice is available by contacting the RSPB or Swift Conser vation (www swift-conser vation org) These organisations can also let you know what to do with a grounded or injured swift Please tell ever yone how wonder ful and endangered swifts are, and what can be done on any/all current and future developments to help - pass it on!
Footbridges - In recent weeks we have had a number of repor ts from our Footpath Champions related to the footbridge on the Hicca Way adjacent to the Common. The sur face of the bridge is damaged and in need of repair. Unfor tunately we are not permitted to work on the bridges and rely on the Council to repair them. As a result, this issue has been followed up by ACorN with our Rights of Way Officer and we await a repair. Please do not let this stop you from also repor ting this directly and applying fur ther pressure to keep this route open!
Lastly, in August we bid farewell to Linda Clapham who has been a stalwar t member of the Committee and previously held the Chair role Many will also know Linda as a member of Arlesey Town Council Linda has moved away from Arlesey to be nearer family and is wished all the ver y best for the future and we extend our hear tfelt thanks for her suppor t to the Arlesey community and to ACORN
In addition to our open invitation to becoming a volunteer, we will shor tly seek to recruit a new committee member to continue Linda’s good work If you’d like to suppor t our work, as an individual member or local business willing to make a small donation to suppor t our continued work please contact us at arlesey acorn@gmail com we are keen to hear from you
Thank you to all our volunteers, Footpath Champions, followers of Facebook and ever yone else who walks the paths keeping the nettles down or picking up litter, keep up the good work!
Richard Liversidge ACORN Chair
•769 parcels provided in 23 working days • 401 top- up-bags collected from our Pop- up sites • £53,995 estimated value of the food for the month • £6,602.50, the average monthly cost to run the charity • 1680 adults, 1526 children & 274 pensioners - the amount of people helped in July
Time goes so fast in between these repor ts, and it never ceases to amaze me how much work we get through and how we manage in all aspects of our operation We know that God has his hand on us because it is His project, and we follow his teaching in how we operate, in that we make no distinction with our food as long as you are in need and have been referred by a known agency to us, then we will do our best for you These agencies know their clients and are professionals and know when food and suppor t is needed better than we do
Some aspects are more challenging for example dietar y needs etc Our clients and our demographics mean that variation in need has changed massively as we ser ve different people, but we manage praise God!
This month (July) we distributed 769 food parcels along with 401 bags of best before items, which would have gone into landfill if you had not helped by taking it I’ll never take for granted your ongoing suppor t either by funds, food, prayers, which are so so impor tant to us and even a hello and a smile makes such a difference
Now to our move, well I can say we are miles closer than last month, but for me not close enough, but by the next repor t maybe, just maybe we will be over the line, God willing.
We have had our first Christmas planning meeting, just to get our heads around how we can manage with ever y thing else that is going on.
Anyway, we are excited and ner vous, all at the same time, for the future and hopefully by the next repor t we may have a set of keys in our hands
Thank you so much for your suppor t
Thanks,
Gordon Praise God always

As I reflect on the last year at PBA I am once again reminded of the distance the school has travelled in such a shor t period of time Next year we will have six year groups in the school, over 100 members of staff and a building that is no longer half empty: 900 plus pupils with nearly 200 in the new year 5 will make the place feel pretty busy Of course, each new year brings it own set of challenges, and that will continue to be the case while we are still growing Looking back a few key moments warrant mention:
Without doubt the OFSTED experience was a key moment It feels like we were waiting quite some time to finally have our visit and when it did arrive it all went by in a blur For tunately, things went ver y well and the school looked and felt as it always does, calm, business like and happy Pupils enjoyed talking to inspectors about their school, staff had the oppor tunity to talk about the journey the school has been on over the last few years and overall, in as far as is possible, ever yone had a good experience The outcome from the inspection was ver y strong with some areas identified as outstanding This was gratifying given all the work under taken in the last few years and ever yone deser ves credit for their effor ts
The per formance of our current year 6 pupils in their SATs examinations was also a highlight of the year Our pupils quite simply per formed magnificently and deser ve huge credit for their attitude and application throughout the examinations and in the build- up. As a school we are determined that examinations of this nature are given their due status but are not over exaggerated. I did not expect to surpass our achievements of the year before but to do so and once again exceed the national average in all areas was a great achievement.
As has been the case for the last few years Spor ts day will once again live long in the memor y. Another truly magnificent event was the school’s inaugural per forming ar ts festival. Organised by our head of drama Mrs Jones this event pulled together ar t, drama, dance and music in an exciting smorgasbord of per formances. Moving back into the year there are other highlights but perhaps amongst all of the events and visits, the Ski trip stands out To take our first trip abroad was amazing If it hadn’t been for some old fool breaking their leg it would have passed without mishap ( The swelling has nearly gone!)
It has been another incredible year September provides another great oppor tunity for a host of new staff to join the school and look to make their mark Stephen Adams - Principle

Thank you to the Arlesey community! We have had a remarkable increase in your suppor t at New Lamb Meadow through the pre - season and into the League Games. Not only is it a great way to build an atmosphere, but we know the Players really appreciate the suppor t - and there’s been some pretty nifty football skills which have impressed the crowd too!
Phil (Vice Chairman) and I wanted to give you a little update on some of the key commitments the Committee are working on and, hopefully, we can encourage you to get involved where you see a connection, become one of our Members ( join up using the link on our website banner which also details the benefits of membership) or rekindle your love of spor t through volunteer role!
Here is our ONE BIG TEAM Objective
1 In Action:
The youth teams now form Match Day Mascots for home games, arranged through the Youth Development Teams as par t of the empowerment of our Young Players and making them feel a par t of the wider ATFC Match day mascots have some valuable time with the First Team during the build- up to the game, run out onto the pitch with the Team and even choose and present the Man of the Match
2 At the end of this football season:
We are working to ensure that our thriving youth teams feel a par t of Arlesey Town Football Club by enabling them to use the main Club facilities, with a vision to ensure they are fully integrated at the Ground when a 3G/4G pitch has been installed Our target for the 3G/4G is to have it ready for the 2025/26 season. This is going to entail plenty of fundraising, but we know that there is plenty of suppor t for functions and events that will help ever yone have fun, whilst helping to achieve this ambitious aim!
3. For the longer run: We will have a thriving football pathway for all ages. Whilst work on this initiative can commence straight away, we know there is the potential to develop all three elements of the ONE BIG TEAM objectives into an ambitious proposal to realise the potential of our second pitch, possibly with a second 3G/4G and construction of changing rooms and classrooms as an academy facility, away from the main Club House
These are just a few of the plans within the ‘ONE BIG TEAM’ objective and we know that our Membership have been ver y excited about the plans! Do keep an eye on social media for information on our fixtures, events and proposals Equally, we value your input on ideas and suggestions, so feel free to get in touch Chairmanarlesey townfc@gmail com or info@arlesey townfc co uk Nic & Phil look for ward to welcoming you to The Blues - don’t be shy, come along, enjoy the evening and suppor t a local grassroots team with a ONE BIG TEAM ethos!

Tuesday 10 September 7.30pm at the WI Hall High Street, Arlesey. "The Melting Pot" - Chocolate talk and tasting. Who doesn't like chocolate? Come and join us ladies and see what we're all about. You'll be made welcome.
We know that we say we're not all about "Jam & Jerusalem" but we thought we’d share a jam recipe with you anyway!! ( just incase!)
Ingredients: 1 5 kg (3 lbs) blackberries / 1 5 kg (3 lbs) sugar / 150 ml (5 fl oz) water / 1 lemon
Cut lemon in half and squeeze out juice Put juice and hollowed out lemon bits in large pan with blackberries Simmer gently till soft, do not boil Add sugar, stir until thoroughly dissolved then bring to boil Do not put a lid on the pan Boil hard until setting point has been reached, that's when a little jam on a cold saucer wrinkles when cold Pour into warm, sterilised jars Jars can be sterilised in a hot oven or hot cycle in dishwasher When cold cover with a disc of waxed paper or baking parchment Makes about 6 or 7 jars Enjoy!
