This year ’s Stotfold Walking Market proved more popular than ever before with over 160 stalls taking par t in the event held on August Bank Holiday Monday. Together with Stotfold Town Council, the Stotfold News Magazine were delighted to once again be involved with organising the event and welcomed the fantastic new addition this year of the Salvation Army Hall as a much needed ‘pit stop’ for ever yone to enjoy - with some delicious refreshments thrown in too! (thank you to ever yone that helped facilitate this!)
Huge thanks to ever yone that took par t, got involved and helped coordinate the day - we know it is a well loved event on the Stotfold calendar and look for ward to introducing some new initiatives next year to make it even more successful for 2025!
Seeing Taylor Swift live in concer t is a dream come true for millions of girls, but when Stotfold’s Amelie Flatt was at her idol’s record-breaking last UK concer t at Wembley Stadium in August, it was infinitely more special. Amelie was well enough to attend after a vital stem cell transplant, following a devastating third leukaemia diagnosis last year.
First diagnosed at the age of three, time had been running out to find a compatible stem cell donor for Amelie Thankfully, an overseas donor was found, and Amelie had her transplant at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in April
Poor Amelie had to celebrate her twelfth bir thday (in May) in hospital Her mum Sofia Coelho tried to make it as fun as possible for her – along with her friend Ella and her mum, they secretly got Taylor Swift tickets – they hid them in a cake which they took to the hospital -- when the covering sugar paper came off, revealed the two girls were going to the concer t “Amelie could not believe it, she was totally over whelmed and so excited – she is a massive Taylor Swift fan,” Sofia told the Stotfold News Magazine
Now, Sofia is passionate about encouraging more people to sign up to the stem cell register, and has linked up with blood cancer charity DKMS Ever y 20 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with blood cancer
“At first, we struggled to find a donor By registering as a potential stem cell donor, you could be giving someone like my daughter Amelie the second chance at life that they urgently need,” Sofia says. It only takes a few minutes to join the DKMS stem cell register. If you are aged 17-55 and in general good health, you’re eligible to join the DKMS register. Find out more by visiting dkms.org.uk
A few weeks ago we were delighted to have been asked along to Day’s Baker y where shop manageress Diane presented Grahame & Carole Lord with a beautifully decorated Golden Wedding Anniversar y cake - only this cake had an extra special meaning!
On hearing the stor y of how Grahame & Carole purchased their original wedding cake from Day’s Baker y some 50 years ago in 1974, the baker y presented the couple with their Golden Wedding Anniversar y cake as a special anniversar y gift! Both Grahame and Carole are valued customers of Day’s Baker y, (we heard Grahame is par tial to the freshly made rolls!)

Well, here we are in October, and it’s definitely feeling a bit autumnal out there – a per fect time to come and visit Stotfold Mill! We’re really pleased to repor t that the damaged boardwalk in the Nature Reser ve has been replaced so it’s possible to do the full loop of the meadows now. Take a wander through to Meadow 3 and admire the colours and scents that the changing season brings to the Reser ve.
What can you spot?
Seed heads in the grasses, berries in the hedges, maybe even a seasonal visitor to the river or ponds. If you take a fab photo of your visit in the Nature Reser ve, don’t forget to tag us in social media, or even pop us an email with the picture attached – we’d love to feature a board of people’s pictures! You can contact us on socialmedia@stotfoldmill com
Of course, being October the thing we’re all busy thinking about is the Working Steam Weekend – our second annual event and your chance to get up close and personal with the giants of agricultural steam Check out the threshing machine as it clanks and whirs its way through the straw, or the timber- saw as it chomps through entire tree trunks, not to mention the heavy horses and steam engines who’ll be ploughing the far end of the showground Then there’s the beer tent, with live music throughout the weekend, the craft and trade stalls selling a variety of wonder ful things, the static engine displays and the Sheep Show Plus, of course, the Mill will be open both days of the event, with regular Milling demonstrations to enjoy, our friendly and knowledgeable stewards to guide you through the histor y of the Mill, and the Tea Room and Kingfisher Shop offering light refreshments and retail therapy Don’t miss it! Tickets for the Working Steam Weekend are available on the gate, but if you buy them in advance, via our website, you can get a discount on the full price!
Details are available here: https://www.stotfoldmill.com/working - steam-2024/ We’re looking for ward to welcoming you to the Mill.
Dear Editor,
The summer Quest youth activity programme is now complete - Scheduling a youth activity programme this size is a logistical piece of ar t, it’s takes months to create, infact we star t planning in Januar y!
It’s time to give thanks to ever yone who contributed & helped make it happen Firstly, a massive thank you to all the children & young people who took par t, it’s been a pleasure to be able to offer the range of activities to keep you busy this year And to all the parents, carers, grand parents who have suppor ted the programme We worked with approx 650 children & young people this year via par ticipation in activities or out on detached engagement work
We delivered over 30 different activity type sessions, 170 activity sessions available free to access, 266 hours of deliver y in 20 locations (towns & villages including Stotfold & Arlesey)
There were challenges throughout the summer with unexpected bookings of activities, a few venue issues & some rescheduling needed This is to be expected with a programme of this size & thank you for patience / suppor t We are already planning and looking for ward to next year!
Thank you again to ever yone that helped make this happen in any way. Nicola King - on behalf of Shefford & Stotfold Youth Involvement
Dear Editor,
I read with a r ye smile the letter from Clr Woodfine PhD imploring us all to respond to the latest of many local plans that have come from Mid Beds/CBC down the 50+ years that I have lived in Stotfold. She might be interested to know that if the wishes of residents had been implemented in previous plans then she would not be living in the house she has on a development that was rejected by over 90% of those voting
It is well known that if developers are rejected at local level they merely appeal to contacts developed in Whitehall/Westminster, the appeal is handed to some third level clerk who probably could not find Stotfold on a map. As successive "governments" have lost control of the nations demographics this clerk is under huge pressure from those above to get houses built ASAP and regardless of suitability and impact any old development is ticked through
Talk to people in other areas around the UK and they will almost cer tainly tell you of unsuitable development in their locality
The local plan is one of todays numerous box ticking exercises done in an attempt to make Joe Public feel involved but in reality of ver y little real value.
Malcolm Rober ts
Dear Editor,
We’re so pleased with the quality of our new fence, a massive improvement to the garden
After getting a few quotes, I’m really pleased we went with Stotfold Fencing We’re ver y lucky to have such good, reliable local trades people Nath was a pleasure to deal with and we couldn’t of asked for a nicer couple -
We would highly recommend!

New Stotfold Town Councillors
Lisa Miller
I’ve lived in Stotfold for over 20 years and have always taken an interest in matters affecting the town I’m a recently qualified Social Worker and before that I worked in child protection for 20 years That role was a natural follow on from working in a nurser y school/children’s centre My children grew up in Stotfold and attended local schools
Whilst studying to be a Social Worker I also enrolled as a Special Constable with Bedfordshire Constabular y. My duties have been many and varied, from policing a Luton Town v Millwall football match to patrolling the Luton and Bedford Night Time Economy (NTE). As you can imagine, this involved engaging with members of the public in ver y stressful situations, where communication and decision making are extremely impor tant, especially when tr ying to defuse potentially violent situations. On patrol, I preferred to engage with members of the public with a view to preventing antisocial behaviour rather than dealing with the consequences.
My aim as a Town Councillor is to use my professional skills and experience to help keep Stotfold a great place to live by being innovative and suppor tive and to seek out and listen to the views and ideas of my fellow residents to the benefit of us all.
Br yony Woods
I moved to Stotfold in July 2022 with my husband in the middle of a heatwave Having grown up in Luton, Stotfold was a par t of Bedfordshire that I knew ver y little about and we were both keen to involve ourselves in our new community Having both trained as opera singers and working as freelance musicians, we felt that Stotfold would benefit from a community choir and in March 2023, the Stotfold Singers was born Working with communities is a fundamental par t of being a freelance musician and the most rewarding par t of the job isn’t per forming at events and in concer ts, but seeing friendships blossom within the choir, watching confidence in music-making grow and organising social events for the choir members and their friends and family to attend
Having been involved in the local community in this way and finding myself being drawn towards public ser vice, I enquired in joining Stotfold Town Council and in Januar y 2024, I was co-opted as a Town Councillor I am par ticularly passionate about community engagement and have been working with this committee on developing events such as the Stotfold Walking Market, Stotfest and the 80th anniversar y of D -Day commemoration I look for ward to helping develop and create future events, making Stotfold a vibrant and interesting place to live
Did you attend and enjoy Stotfest? We’re always looking for volunteers who can help us with our events and we’re current planning our Christmas Lights Switch On. If you’d like to be involved, please email sarah@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk or give us a call 01462 730064.
On the 5th & 6th October we will be at Stotfold Mill’s Working Steam Weekend. Come along and chat to our councillors about any thing you like and buy our 50th Anniversar y beer, gin and cups.
We look for ward to seeing you there!

Each month we like to introduce you to another of our wonder ful Stotfold & Arlesey News Magazine adver tisers - this month we are talking to Jim from Stotfold based Mice & Tidy!
1 Mice & Tidy Great name!! Where did you come up with the idea for the business and more impor tantly who came up with the fabulous name?
I've always been interested in the natural world, it fascinates me Insects, birds, mammals and fish when you look at their place in our ecosystem they are all impor tant and amazing The majority of animals and insects can live their lives without ever directly affecting us in any way, they only become a pest when they invade our environment Take wasps, as an apex predator of the insect world they play a critical role of controlling caterpillars, aphids and other insects in our gardens and on our farms But when nesting in our houses, sheds or gardens present a significant risk and must be controlled I became interested in pest control after speaking to other pest controllers who shared my interests and beliefs and joined the industr y This ultimately led to star ting the business Mice & Tidy Pest Control We understand that pests in our homes and businesses can cause an enormous amount of anxiety and stress Mice and Tidy Pest Control will always work hard to rid you of any pest invasion and offer advice to prevent any future problems As for the name, we were looking for a catchy name people would remember, it was a joint family decision but really I have to give my son in-law Darren the credit for the name Mice & Tidy
2. Are you originally Stotfold residents or have you chosen to settle here from elsewhere? My father was originally a Stotfold lad and I've always had close ties with Stotfold. I was for tunate enough to have had an idyllic childhood growing up on a farm just outside Biggleswade. I've always lived in the surrounding areas but have actually lived in Stotfold for the past 26 years.
3. In your line of work you must see some pretty hair-raising things! Is there any thing you are scared of and why!? Flying and social media ! I'm not good at either Thankfully my eldest daughter Amy takes care of the Mice & Tidy social media And as for flying, I'm quite happy to Holiday in the UK!
4 In your spare time how do you like to relax and unwind? I love off road cycling to unwind and enjoy getting out on the bike I'm taking par t in the London to Brighton Off road ride to raise money for the British Hear t Foundation later this month
Relaxing with a good pint of beer and a meal in a nice restaurant takes a lot of beating

As we head into Autumn, the shor ter days and darker evenings can leave us feeling gloomy. We may need to work harder to find that which lifts us.
We live in times where there is a lot of focus on what triggers us. This term refers to any experience that activates our stress system – it may be the daily stressors or a present day experience that hits on something from our histor y resulting in a double whammy of difficult emotions These ebbs and flows and ups and downs are a natural par t of life that we learn to navigate
What we don’t always hear so much about is something called ‘glimmers’ These are effectively the opposite of triggers as they have the opposite effect on the system These are basically any experience that lifts our spirits It could be as brief as an exchange of a smile with a stranger or seeing a familiar face, recognising a comfor ting smell or place, being captivated by the beauty of nature, the unconditional love of a pet or even a happy memor y It can be easier to notice the negative in life over the positive The news is a good example of something that constantly bombards us with the horrors that are happening around the world The emphasis is on the negative without a counterbalance of all that is positive
There will always be experiences that trigger us Equally there will always be glimmers that lift us The more we pay attention to seeing the glimmers within each day, the more we notice them The more we see them, the more they lift us and the more motivated we become to keep seeking them out It may be a little harder at this time of year, but glimmers are all around!

• 599 parcels provided in 22 working days • 336 top- up-bags collected from our Pop- up sites • £66,575 estimated value of the food for the month • £6,602.50, the average monthly cost to run the charity • 1242 adults, 1141 children & 317 pensioners - the amount of people helped in August.
We have done about 600 food parcels and 336 top up bags this month We have seen a small reduction in parcels, because people have been receiving vouchers and help from different areas, but this is still 21% up on last August This has made it possible for us to tr y to restock in a small way, but we are desperately shor t of most things as we prepare for the coming months and Christmas We continue to spend money on food, not because we aren’t well suppor ted but because of demand on our ser vice We are continually blessed and encouraged by the incredible suppor t we receive in so many ways and for us it is always a great joy to help people who are going through hard times and just need a little help in life
Today is the four th working day for us in September and we have processed about 130 referrals which is a lot for 4 days, but we will cope We are getting closer to our new premises, thank the Lord and I honestly mean that, because without him we wouldn’t be in this incredibly blessed position We are doing a massive tin collection throughout September, just to restock We are hoping to collect 30,000 tins from our suppor ters, so by the time I do the next repor t we will have a number which we can share back We are planning to do a recording about what we do, to share with our fundraising activities So, if we have helped you in any way, through a hard time or we are still helping you and you are prepared to go on camera to share your stor y, please, get in touch with me on 07496 833940.
As always, in closing I want to personally thank all the people who work tirelessly for the project. There are so many, from the packers, the deliverers, the people who help at the drop-ins, the people who, when we put a call out on Facebook react so generously. It’s incredible that we have over 4000 followers and you are all on the journey with us. To where, I have little idea, but as long as we stay focused on Jesus we can’t go wrong. Thank you so so much and remember Praise God AlwaysGordon

Welcome to our first update since returning from the six-week summer break.
I hope our families all enjoyed their time away from school Summer holidays can feel long and expensive for us all, so I hope you all enjoyed the little things – these are often the things the children cherish the most as they grow, a favourite often being a pyjama day The summer reset in school is one of my favourite times, the building feels fresh and ready to go again, a huge thank you to Mr Penny and the cleaning team who have worked to get the building ready for us all
The children have all settled into school life over the last few weeks and as always their effor t and ability to be resilient when things feel new or hard makes me so incredibly proud, the Roecroft community is so ver y special and as a team we are looking for ward to the school year ahead
This month we have an update from Head of Curriculum/Year 2 teacher, Miss Emmerson; In Key Stage 1, we have had a fantastic star t to our Autumn term after our summer break We were all eager to get star ted in our new year groups and have now settled into our classrooms beautifully We have enjoyed getting to know our new teachers through fun circle times, we have shared special memories from our summer and have also taken par t in lots of lovely friendship activities
In Year 1, our new topic is 'A Toy Stor y'. We have star ted looking at the ar tist Andy Warhol, focusing on his use of colour a and repeating patterns. We will now be creating our own block patterns from toys that we have sketched and look for ward to making our own printing tiles to complete our design. We will be creating these out of polystyrene, so will have to etch our designs onto them carefully! In other areas of the curriculum, we have been reading the exciting stor y 'Lost in the Toy Museum' and have enjoyed oppor tunities to act out the different scenes, such as the toys playing hide and seek!
We now look for ward to carr ying out some writing -based activities to retell the events in order and to also describe some of the characters using adjectives Elsewhere in KS1, Year 2 have also launched their new topic called 'Fire and Ice' The children have already learnt so much about the historical events of 'The Great Fire of London' and have enjoyed exploring ar tefacts to suppor t discussion for the causes and consequences of the fire The children have applied their new knowledge to writing a recount of this event and have been super excited to design a mode of transpor t in DT, suitable for putting out fires! The children learnt about axles, wheels and a chassis and then practically explored skills to combine these components into a vehicle We also have lots of exciting events coming up after half term, such as topic days, handwriting competitions and inter-house competitions It has been such a positive star t to the school year and it is so lovely to be back together as a Roecroft family, living our values together
Quality used cars & vans supplied Excellent after sales care,
Motor vehicle servicing and general repair work undertaken, any
or model
By the time this item is published, our children will have settled in their new classes and joined the many extracurricular clubs we have on offer They will have also enjoyed our author visit and reading ‘Shirley Murley’
Our decarbonisation project is hopefully nearing completion We are sure that the local community will be as relieved as we will be once this happens! Over the summer, work continued on regenerating our school field, something the children and staff have really missed over the past 18 months. School building lights that were not already LED were also changed to LED over the summer and a drone sur vey of our roof has been under taken to ascer tain the viability of installing some solar panels in 2025. We would like to thank ever yone for their suppor t and patience during the works that have taken far longer than originally predicted.
Early in October we will once again take par t in a whole school Har vest Festival Celebration - a special assembly enjoyed by all of our children at a time when helping others is even more appreciated We are once again suppor ting the Need Project with donations October also sees the return of 'Open the Book' assemblies An amazing group of volunteers from our local churches come into school on six mornings each term to share a Bible stor y with the children - complete with costumes, props and audio Alongside our daily Collective Worship - Moonstone, Coral, Jet, Opal and Emerald Classes will be leading assemblies during the month Parents of children in these classes are invited to attend and enjoy these
Our individual and family photographs will be taken on Tuesday 22nd October – ideal gifts for that ‘season’ that will be upon us all too quickly! Our 2024 New Parents Information Evening is planned for Thursday 24th October at 7.00pm. Families of children star ting school in September 2025 are invited to come along for an information evening about star ting school and what they can look for ward to during their time at St Mar y’s. Ever yone is welcome!
Finally, we should mention that we are well into the new learning mission for the Autumn Term, including 'All About Me' in Reception Classes, ‘Nur turing Nurses' in Key Stage 1 and ‘The Anglo Saxons' and ‘The Stone Age’ in Key Stage 2. Our Year 3 children also have a fun and educational Stone Age workshop in school on Monday 14th October! Look out for our termly curriculum over view for more details!
We are only just back at school from the summer break, but the Autumn Half Term is from 28th to 1st November We look for ward to bringing you more news next month
The children this term so far are showing fantastic learning behaviours in the classrooms and wider school environments. We place a huge impor tance on suppor ting our children move from one year to the next and also suppor ting those new to our school. The time spent developing positive relationships and setting expectations enables the children to then par ticipate effectively and independently in their learning – we are ver y proud of them.
In anticipation of the Ar ts week in November, Year 3 have been to see the Lion King in the West End and have been inspired by the costumes, singing and per formance. Year 1 are getting to know their local area and placing where they live into context; the Year 2s are keen to follow maps and create their own – putting their fieldwork skills to the test. Year 4 have enjoyed Greek activities and exploring their greatest achievements
Our Early Years children have been exploring their environments, sharing books and learning about what makes them unique A brilliant way to star t their learning journeys and be confident that they are special and have a lot to offer Value of the Half Term: Responsibility Fair field Park Lower School Dickens Boulevard & Ruskin Drive office@fair fieldparklower.uk 01462 830000
The star t of a new academic year and we are already back into the swing of school September always provides that ver y specific feeling: the summer has gone and we are getting ready for autumn proper and the change in the weather that comes with it For us the first month is always exciting We continue to grow with over 180 pupils joining the school into year five and our first cohor t of pupils star ting their GCSE journey in year 10 We also have a large body of new staff who have joined the PBA team and they have made a fantastic star t to the year The school now has over 100 staff and over 900 pupils so from those ver y small beginnings back in 2019 we are now a large extended secondar y school
As I reflect back on those first few days in September I am reminded of the work and effor ts under taken by staff to help our pupils settle back into school It is not easy for anyone to return to school (or work) after an extended break and that is no different for our young people For tunately we have all been through this many times and are well used to smoothing the way for pupils and helping them to settle Par ticular credit must go to our primar y team who work so hard to make sure that the transition from the lower school to PBA is both organised and calm
Each year I have the oppor tunity to take an assembly with all year groups Having taken many assemblies over the years I always spend some time thinking about the impor tant messages I want to give on behalf of the school. This year I felt it impor tant to remind our pupils that their task at school is a simple one and not reliant on any par ticular skill or attribute. All we can ever ask our pupils, is to do their best. At PBA we regularly talk about our vision for the school: to educate the socially responsible citizens of the future.
The end of this month see’s the school under taking its open evening. On Thursday 24th October the school will be open to visitors and we will have activities, lessons, pupils and presentations galore. If you have a child in year 4 you would be most welcome to visit the school and take an oppor tunity to speak to our staff and pupils about PBA It is always a busy evening but one that our pupils look for ward to and where they will be able to tell you about t their experience of the school

Not the star t the First Team wanted with three straight defeats in the league against opponents tipped to be in the title race for the league Success in the FA Cup Preliminar y round with a 1-0 win at home to Takeley but sadly the run didn’t continue with a 2-0 away defeat to step 3 Hashtag Utd in the next round
The Reser ve Team have had a steady star t at their new level winning 2, drawing 1 and losing 3 of their matches. Eating food is one of the few things common to all human experience. What type of food we consume and how readily available it is to us may var y widely. But we all eat. In our society the meals on our table will have been brought there through the contribution of many different people working in a variety of environments. This food chain typically involves farmers or fishermen, processors, retailers and those who purchase and prepare the food to eat. It is impor tant that we reconnect with these realities.
Our Har vest Festival is on Sunday 6th October, at the later time of 3 00pm, so why not join us for our annual family friendly traditional Har vest Festival ser vice
The ser vice will be followed by refreshments and sale of local farm produce
A har vest ser vice is an oppor tunity to offer to God the contribution we make in bringing food to the table; to give thanks and pray for others in the chain upon whom we are dependent; and above all to praise God who star ts off each chain by creating the sun’s radiance and giving life to all living things
All proceeds from the sale will be donated to R A B I Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution who provide guidance, practical care and financial suppor t to those in need within the farming community
Our normal ser vice is on the 1st Sunday of the month at 11:15am
