We Give Bees A Chance – Reloaded!

Im März hat ARCOTEL nach dem ersten Jahr der eigenen Bienenaktion einen 18.000-Euro-Scheck an die Spendenorganisation MUTTER ERDE übergeben. Da unsere Gäste die Nachhaltigkeitsaktion begeistert aufnahmen, wird in diesem Jahr fleißig für Bienen weitergesammelt. So geht´s: Verzichten Reisende zwischen zwei Übernachtungen freiwillig auf die Reinigung ihrer Zimmer, spendet ARCOTEL Hotels einen pauschalen Kostenbeitrag zur Rettung der Bienen. Die Gesamtsumme geht am Ende des Jahres wieder an eine Bienenorganisation.

This March ARCOTEL handed over a cheque for 18,000 euros to the charity MUTTER ERDE following the first year of its own campaign to help save bees. As our guests supported the sustainability campaign so enthusiastically, the hotel chain decided to keep on collecting for the bees this year too. This is how it works: For every guest who voluntarily opts out of having their room cleaned between two overnightstays, ARCOTEL Hotels donates a lump sum to help save bees. Sie gehören zu den wohl angesagtesten Acts der heimischen Musikszene, gemeinsam wurden sie in den letzten Jahren neun Mal für den Amadeus – den österreichischen Musikpreis – nominiert. Young musicians are combining the traditional roots of the Wienerlied with new styles, presenting songs full of bizarre tales about the city, its inhabitants, and love and death with lashings of black humour. Since September 2015 artists have been performing in the intimate setting of WIMBERGERs wia z‘Haus.

The programme got off to a great start, when duo Christoph & Lollo presented some fine musical cabaret on 23 February and continues on 29 March with Worried Man & Worried Boy. The season will end on 3 May, when Ernst Molden & Der Nino aus Wien take to the stage in the large WIMBERGER Hall. These two are probably among the hottest acts on the contemporary Austrian music scene and together have been nominated for the Austrian Amadeus award no fewer than nine times.

ARCOTEL ON ICE! Seit Februar 2015 ist ARCOTEL der starke Partner des Österreichische Eishockeyvereins. Cheftrainer Daniel Ratushny (45) trainiert nicht nur das Nationalteam, sondern auch den EC Red Bull Salzburg.

Die STORiES-Redaktion plauderte mit dem gebürtigen Kanadier über seine neue Heimat Salzburg, seine Ziele für das Nationalteam und die Herausforderungen einer jungen Mannschaft.

Since February 2015 ARCOTEL has been an enthusiastic and supportive partner of the Austrian Ice-Hockey Federation. Canadian-born Daniel Ratushny (45) not only trains the national team, he’s also the coach at EC Red Bull Salzburg. STORiES talked to him about his new home Salzburg, his ambitions for the national team and the challenges facing a young team.

Salzburg ist ja deine neue Heimat, seit du im Mai 2014 die Trainerschaft von Eishockey-Meister Red Bull übernommen hast. Was magst du an der Stadt?

Vieles an Salzburg gefällt mir. Es ist nicht zu groß und nicht zu klein, und ich kann alles leicht mit meinem Rad erreichen. In der Umgebung gibt es die schönsten Seen und Berge der Welt. In der Stadt liebe ich die Cafés und Restaurants, wo ich nach einem Spiel gerne etwas trinken gehe.

Salzburg has been your new home since you took on the job of training ice-hockey champions Red Bull in May 2014. What do you like about the city?

There’s lots about Salzburg that I like. It’s not too big and not too small and I can get around very easily on my bike. The surrounding countryside has the most beautiful lakes and mountains in the world. In the city, I love the cafés and restaurants, where I like to go and have a drink after a match.

Jetzt zu deinem Spezialgebiet: Seit Juli 2014 bist du Nationaltrainer. Was war dein bester Moment bisher?

Wir hatten einige beste Momente. Bei der Weltmeisterschaft in Prag 2015 hat unser Team wirklich zusammengespielt, als sehr starke Einheit. Da haben wir gesehen, dass wir mit sehr starken Gegnern mithalten können. Auf diesen Momenten können wir aufbauen!

Now to your area of expertise: You’ve been training the national team since July 2014. What’s been your best moment so far?

We’ve had several best moments. At the world championships in Prague in 2015 our team played incredibly well together; the players formed a really strong unit. We saw then that we’re able to keep up with very strong opponents. We can build on moments like these!

Bei der Euro Ice Hockey Challenge letzten November in Polen stand das jüngste Team aller Zeiten auf dem Eis und fuhr gute Resultate ein. Wo siehst du die Stärken?

Das Beste des Team Austria bei der EIHC in Polen war, dass wir mit jedem Spiel besser geworden sind. Im ersten Spiel gegen Südkorea (2:1, Anm. der Redaktion) haben wir gewonnen, aber nicht gut gespielt. Gegen Slowenien waren wir stärker und hätten ein besseres Ergebnis verdient (1:5). Und im letzten Spiel gegen Polen haben sich unsere Spieler wirklich als Team gefunden und mit ihrer besten Vorstellung gewonnen (4:2).

Was sind die größten Herausforderungen mit so einem jungen Team?

Selbstvertrauen, das brauchen Eishockey-Spieler, um gut zu spielen. Aber das benötigt Jahre der harten Arbeit und wird nur durch Erfahrung gewonnen. So ist es nur natürlich, dass es jungen Spielern manchmal etwas an Selbstvertrauen fehlt.

At the Euro Ice Hockey Challenge last November in Poland, Austria sent the youngest team in history on to the ice and achieved excellent results. Where do you see the strengths?

The best thing about Team Austria at the EIHC in Poland was that we got better with every game. In the first match against South Korea (2:1, editor’s note) we won, but we didn’t play well.

We were better against Slovenia and deserved a better result (1:5). And in the final match against Poland, our players really felt they were a team and carried the day with their best performance (4:2).

What are the biggest challenges with such a young team?

Ice-hockey players need self-confidence if they are to play well.

But that takes years of hard work and only comes with experience. So it’s only natural that young players sometimes lack a little self-confidence.

Nicola Löwenstein left her home city of Vienna, bought a pair of hiking boots, learned to drive on mountain roads and in the process fell in love with Salzburg. The 31-one-year-old lives with her family near the Mirabell Palace and is a news presenter with ServusTV. In ”STORiES“ the Salzburger by choice tells us about some of her favorite places. In meinem Lieblingscafé im Kaiviertel wird nicht einfach nur Kaffee serviert, sondern eine große Tasse Leidenschaft, Fachwissen und Herz. Jedes Jahr reisen Margret und Alois Macheiner zu den Kaffeebauern ihres Vertrauens und begleiten die Bohne von der Pflanze bis zur Tasse. Im neuen Rösthaus werden alle Sorten sekundengenau geröstet (bei 220 Grad, wie der Name verrät), gemahlen und im hellen, modernen Café serviert. Wer einen Platz ergattert, darf sich als Beilage auf einmalige Frühstückskombinationen und himmlische Kuchen freuen.

But as well as coffee, my favourite café in the Kaiviertel in the historic centre of Salzburg offers a large pot of passion, expertise and warmth. Each year, Margret and Alois Macheiner travel to their trusted coffee farmers and follow the progress of the bean from seedling to coffee pot. In the new roast house, all kinds of coffee are roasted with split-second timing (at 220 degrees, as the name indicates), ground and served in the bright and friendly, modern café. ereits 1979 begann mit der Veranstaltung des ersten Ars Electronica Festivals die außergewöhnliche Beziehung der Stadt zu technischen und digitalen Kunstformen.

Christoph Lindinger, Co-Direktor des Ars Electronica Futurelab, ist einer der ”Architekten“ der City of Media Arts: Linz hat so früh wie keine andere Stadt auf die Verbindung von Technologie, Kunst und Partizipation durch die Bevölkerung gesetzt. Dabei waren die vielen Kreativen, Technologieforscher und Gäste hier in Linz nie nur Kommentatoren des Zeitgeschehens, sondern immer auch Vorreiter und relevante Mitgestalter einer technologischen Revolution. Diese ist heute mit dem Internet, Social Media und anderen digitalen Tools schon längst in unserem Alltag angekommen. So wurde zum Beispiel der Erfinder des World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee, schon 1995 mit dem Linzer Medienkunstpreis Prix Ars Electronica für sein Hypertext-Konzept ausgezeichnet. Im selben Jahr wurde in Linz mit dem Ars Electronica Center ein spannendes Museum der Zukunft eröffnet.

In the same year, the Ars Electronica Centre was created as an exciting museum of the future.

Releasing emotions with murals that create identity is how some describe it. As others aptly put it: Just graffiti! Leonhard Gruber knows what visitors can expect: “I used to work in the Boxxoffice from where I could see straight across to the grey industrial building opposite. Over time, I began to find that very boring and so I decided to bring some colour into the harbor in Linz.” The gallery now has 50 murals by artists from 20 countries, including such stars as ARYZ from Spain, LORDS from the USA, ROA from Belgium and SHED from Linz itself.

The best way to see the colossal murals is to take a boat tour of the harbour, as this offers a perfect view of the factory halls, cranes, walls, containers and bridges.

… meine Damen und Herren! Vergnügen Sie sich und verbringen Sie amüsante Stunden hier im Wiener Prater! Er gehört zu Wien wie Kaiserin Sisi und die Fiaker, wie der Stephansdom und das geliebte Wiener Schnitzel – und das seit exakt 250 Jahren.

GESCHICHTE Der Prater war einst kaiserliches Jagdrevier und nur dem Adel zugänglich, bis Kaiser Joseph II. im Jahr 1766 den Wienerinnen und Wienern das Areal als Erholungsgebiet schenkte. Er genehmigte auch die Errichtung von Gastronomieständen und so dauerte es nicht lang, bis der Vorläufer des heutigen Wurstelpraters entstand. Wirte, Kaffeesieder und Lebzelter siedelten sich an, Schaukeln, Ringelspiele und Kegelbahnen folgten.

Im Jahr 1873 fand die erste und bislang einzige Weltausstellung in Wien im Bereich des Praters statt. 1897 wird das Wiener Riesenrad zur Feier des 50. Thronjubiläums von Kaiser Franz Joseph I. errichtet. Der Prater wurde zusehends zu einem Ort der Kultur und Unterhaltung. Die ”bessere“ Gesellschaft fuhr hier mit dem Fiaker aus, Kadetten und Wäschermädel hatten ihre Rendezvous, ”Hutschenschleuderer“ und Kuriositätenkabinette wetteiferten um die Gunst des Publikums. Für die Kinder wurden Puppentheater in einfachen Holzbuden errichtet, wo der spaßige Hanswurst eine Hauptrolle spielte – er gab dem heutigen ”Wurstelprater“ seinen Namen.

GEGENWART Heute zählt der Wiener Prater zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt. Kaum ein Gast fährt nach Hause, ohne hier einen erlebnisreichen Tag verbracht zu haben. Mehr als 250 Attraktionen – ein bunter Mix aus Hightech und Tradition – sorgen für Spaß und Speed ohne Alterslimit. Der ”Wilde Octopus“ katapultiert die Passagiere in 18 Meter Höhe, die ”Schwarze Mamba“ wirbelt sie mit 80 km/h durch die Luft. Die ”Gänge des Schreckens“ im ”Hotel Psycho“ garantieren Gänsehaut, den Achterbahn-Adrenalinkick schlechthin gibt’s im ”Darkride Insider“.

Und an heißen Tagen sorgt der Wasserspaß ”Aqua Gaudi“ für Abkühlung. Zünftig gegessen und getrunken wird am liebsten im legendären Schweizerhaus, von wo aus man gemütlich die Fahrgäste des 117 Meter hohen Kettenkarussells beobachten kann.

JUBILÄUMSJAHR 2016 Heuer wird der Wiener Prater gebührend gefeiert: Am 9. April findet ein Blumenkorso mit über 100 Fiakern, Oldtimern und Motorrädern statt. Im Wien Museum zeigt die Ausstellung ”In den Prater! Wiener Vergnügen seit 1766“ bis 21. August eine Retrospektive des Wiener Originals.

... ladies and gentlemen! Come and enjoy hours of amusement in the Vienna Prater! It’s just as much part of Vienna as Empress Elisabeth and fiacres, St. Stephan’s Cathedral and everyone’s favourite dish, the Wiener Schnitzel – and has been for the last 250 years.

THE PAST The Prater was once an imperial hunting ground and access was restricted to the aristocracy until in 1766 Emperor Joseph II opened it to the public as a recreation area. As he also allowed stalls to be built for the sale of food and drink, it wasn’t long before the precursor of what is now the Wurstelprater grew up on the periphery. Publicans, coffee roasters and gingerbread-makers were the first to arrive, quickly followed by swings, merry-go-rounds and bowling alleys.

In 1873 the first, and to date, only World Exhibition to take place in Vienna was held in the Prater. In 1897 the Giant Ferris Wheel was built to commemorate the Emperor Franz Joseph I’s Golden Jubilee. By then, the Prater was increasingly becoming a popular place for culture and entertainment. The “better” class of people came here in their horse-drawn carriages, army cadets and laundry girls had their secret rendezvous here, showmen and freak shows competed for the public’s favour. or fast zehn Jahren bin ich von Holland nach Österreich gekommen und habe mich sofort in Klagenfurt verliebt!

Nach dem doch manchmal rauen Wetter und vor allem dem heftigen Wind in meiner Heimat ist mir gleich aufgefallen, dass es hier richtig südländisch sein kann. Aber nicht nur das Wetter hat mich sofort überzeugt, auch das Lebensgefühl. Rund um den Lindwurm, Klagenfurts Wahrzeichen, denkt man an eine typisch italienische Piazza, mit sonnigen Gastgärten, kleinen Geschäften und freundlichen Menschen. Ich verrate Ihnen die besten Hotspots zum Shoppen, Schlemmen und Spazieren.

GESTÄRKT IN DEN TAG Meinen Samstagvormittag starte ich am liebsten mit einem guten Kaffee und einem frischen Zuckerreinkerl in der Bäckerei Taunberger, direkt neben unserem ARCOTEL Moser Verdino.

Frisch gestärkt, mache ich mich zu einem Bummel durch die Innenstadt. Sie ist ein kleines, sehr feines Einkaufsparadies – das wusste man auch schon in den 1960er-Jahren. Damals wurde die Kramergasse zur ersten Fußgängerzone Österreichs umgebaut. Mittlerweile ist ein Großteil der Innenstadt für Fußgänger reserviert.

SHOPPEN RUND UM DEN ALTEN PLATZ, STÖBERN IN DER WIENER UND KRAMER GASSE Besonders gerne schlendere ich durch die historischen Gassen und schaue, was es Neues gibt. Ganz traditionell, keinesfalls altmodisch, geht es im Trachtengeschäft Strohmeier (Dr.-ArthurLemisch-Platz 7) zu. Eine richtige Institution ist auch der Zehrer (Alter Platz 6), der alles anbietet, was man zum Backen braucht, von Tortenfiguren über feinste Schokolade bis hin zu allerlei

So stell‘ ich mir den perfekten Samstag vor: Carolien Schoon, Front Office Manager im ARCOTEL Moser Verdino, verrät, wie sie einen frühlingshaften Samstag in der Kärntner Landeshauptstadt am liebsten verbringt.

Werkzeug, um filigrane Kunstwerke zu bauen. Ich liebe es, hier einfach ein bisschen zu stöbern und mich durchzukosten.

Die schönsten Handtaschen gibt es beim Berliner Label Liebeskind (Kramergasse 10), das auch gleich ein bisschen Weltstadt-Feeling nach Klagenfurt bringt. Etwas weiter, in der Wiener Gasse 1, finde ich bei Moustache Jeans immer passende Teile für meinen Kleiderschrank. Ganz gern schaue ich auch bei Luise Modellhüte (Wiener Gasse 9) vorbei. Ich bin zwar keine wirkliche Hutträgerin, doch die handgemachten Kopfbedeckungen in der Auslage sind auf jeden Fall einen kurzen Abstecher wert.

FÜR DEN KLEINEN GUSTO UND DEN GROSSEN HUNGER Bevor es weitergeht, hole ich mir gerne ein frisches Eis vom Eisgreißler. Alles ist hier bio, frisch und auch sehr kreativ. Das Ziegenkäse-Eis ist wirklich etwas ganz Besonderes! Bei richtig großem Hunger oder zu einem netten Dinner schaue ich gerne im Wispelhof (Feldkirchner Straße 29) vorbei. Hier gibt es feine Speisen direkt aus der Umgebung von Klagenfurt und der Küchenchef serviert perfekt handgekrendelte Kärntner Kasnudeln.

Am Nachmittag widme ich mich gern dem Kulturangebot. Die Galerie 3 zeigt am Alten Platz 25 zeitgenössische Kunst. Oft werden hier auch junge, noch unbekannte Künstler präsentiert.

Und das Museum Moderner Kunst Klagenfurt stellt einen Ort der Begegnung und aktiven Auseinandersetzung mit neuen Kunstströmungen dar. Hier gibt es immer wechselnde Ausstellungen, sodass sich ein Besuch immer lohnt.

I

moved to Austria from Holland almost ten years ago and fell in love with Klagenfurt straight away! After the sometimes rough weather and above all strong winds in my home country, one of the first things I noticed was that the climate here can be positively Mediterranean at times. But it wasn’t just the weather that impressed me; it was the lifestyle too. The area round the Lindwurm, Klagenfurt’s most famous landmark, always reminds me of a typical Italian piazza with its sunny street cafés, small shops and friendly people. So now I’m going to reveal my favourite hot spots for shopping, wining and dining or just strolling through town.

GETTING THE DAY OFF TO A GOOD START

My favourite way to start a Saturday morning is to treat myself to a good cup of coffee and a fresh Zuckerreinkerl, a mini yeast-cake with a cinnamon and sugar glaze, at Taunberger’s, the bakery next door to the ARCOTEL Moser Verdino. Thus fortified and full of energy, I then set off for a walk through town. The centre of Klagenfurt is a small and very exquisite shopping paradise, something the city fathers obviously realised back in the 1960s, when the Kramergasse became Austria’s very first pedestrian zone. Nowadays, of course, most of the city centre is reserved for pedestrians.

SHOPPING AROUND THE ALTER PLATZ, RUMMAGING AROUND IN THE WIENER GASSE AND KRAMER GASSE

One of the things I enjoy most is wandering through the picturesque historic streets and checking out what’s new. Very traditional, but not at all old-fashioned is the Trachtengeschäft Strohmeier (Dr.-Arthur-LemischPlatz 7) that sells beautifully-made, traditional Austrian clothing. Another veritable institution is Zehrer (Alter Platz 6), that supplies everything a cake-maker could ever need; from figurine toppers to luxury chocolate and specialist utensils for creating edible works of art. I love spending time poking about here and sampling the goods.

The most beautiful handbags are to be found at the store belonging to the Berlin label Liebeskind (Kramergasse 10), a store that also brings a touch of international flair to Klagenfurt. A bit further along, at Wiener Gasse 1, I know I’ll always be able to find something to put in my wardrobe at Moustache Jeans. Another place I like passing by is Luise Modellhüte (Wiener Gasse 9), for although I’m not really a hat enthusiast, the handmade creations on display in the window are definitely worth a short detour.

GRABBING A BITE TO EAT

Before continuing on my way, I stop and buy a fresh ice-cream from the Eis Greißler ice-salon. All the products here are organic, fresh and also very creative. The goat-cheese ice-cream is really delicious. If I’m very hungry or want to go out for dinner with a friend then the Wispelhof (Feldkirchner Straße 29) is my first choice. The dishes here are all made with ingredients sourced from in and around Klagenfurt and the chef serves perfectly hand-sealed Carinthian Kasnudeln, the local pasta filled with cheese.

In the afternoon, I like to take advantage of the city’s vibrant cultural scene.

Galerie 3 at Alter Platz 25 exhibits contemporary art and often presents works by young artists who are still waiting to be discovered. The Carinthian Museum of Modern Art in Klagenfurt is an interesting forum that actively engages with new art trends. As the exhibitions change all the time, it’s always worth coming in.

ie Besucher tauchen in unterschiedlichste Geschichten ein, von Mordkomplotten in den 1920er-Jahren über Fälle des berühmten Sherlock Holmes bis zu Krimis in der eigenen Stadt. So etwa in St. Pauli 1965: Die Hamburger Originale Onkel Hugo und Tante Hermine sind Besitzer der Haifischbar auf der Reeperbahn, wo es so heiß herging. In der Kneipe tummeln sich Rosenverkäuferinnen, Seemänner, attraktive Damen, aber auch Herren, die an Letzteren ihr Geld verdienen.

Es wird getanzt, getrunken und gefeiert – bis ein Gast erdrosselt wird. Ob der kompetente Kommissar der Hamburger Davidwache den Fall lösen kann?

Die Gäste können auch Zeugen eines turbulenten Beziehungskrimis werden.

Los geht’s auch dabei in einer Bar: Ein Mann und eine Frau, die sich dort zufällig treffen, müssen verkraften, dass sie von ihren Ehepartnern betrogen wurden.

Genau diese flirten zur selben Zeit in einer anderen Bar. Stück für Stück erfahren die Zuschauer mehr Details. Die Millionärstochter hört von ihrem todkranken Vater, dass er einen unehelichen Sohn hat, der die Hälfte des Vermögens erben soll. Nebenbei geht es um eine Französin auf Korsika, die anscheinend erhebliche Güter besitzt, um einen Waffenhändler, der schon einige Leichen auf dem Gewissen hat, und einen Manager in der Midlife-Crisis, der aus seinem eintönigen Leben ausbricht.

Während das Service-Team einen Gang nach dem nächsten an die Tische bringt, pflastern Eifersuchtsszenen und Mordpläne den Abend. Die Schauspieler lassen ganz tief in seelische Abgründe blicken, und die Zuseher stellen fest: Traue keinem, nicht einmal dir selbst, denn jeder kann zum Mörder werden. Wer bringt wen um? Wer ist unschuldig? Wie hängen die Figuren zusammen? Ein spannender, komischer und köstlicher Abend endet mit einer meist völlig überraschenden Auflösung des Falls. ”Das hätten wir nie gedacht!“ – so der Tenor nach der Veranstaltung. Und geschmeckt hat es übrigens auch ausgezeichnet.

iners are plunged into the most varied of stories, from murder plots in the 1920s to cases of the world-famous detective Sherlock Holmes and even crimes in their own city. Like this one in St. Pauli in 1965: Two typical characters from Hamburg, Onkel Hugo and Tante Hermine, are the owners of the Haifischbar on the Reeperbahn, where the sparks often fly. Rose-sellers, sailors, attractive young ladies, as well as the gentlemen who earn their living from the latter all come here for a good time. They dance, drink and party - until one night, a guest is strangled. Will the capable detective from Hamburg’s Davidwache police station be able to solve the case?

Guests can also witness a turbulent crime of passion. This one too starts in a bar: A man and a woman who happen to meet there by chance are struggling to cope with the fact that their partners are cheating on them. All the time, the faithless spouses are flirting shamelessly in another bar. Gradually, the audience learns more details. A millionaire’s daughter is told by her dying father that he has an illegitimate son who will inherit half his fortune. Then there is a Frenchwoman on Corsica who allegedly has substantial assets, an arms trader who already has a number of people on his conscience and a manager who’s suffering from a midlife crisis and trying to escape from his humdrum life.

While the service team brings one course after another to the table, the evening is charged with jealous scenes and murder plots. The actors allow the audience to look deep into the darkness in their hearts and the horrified guests can only conclude that no one is to be trusted, not even themselves, because anyone can become a killer. Who will kill whom? Who is innocent? What are the connections between the characters? An exciting, amusing and delicious evening ends with what is usually a completely unexpected denouemont. “We never would have thought that!” – is the general tenor afterwards. “And by the way, the food was delicious too”.

he most enjoyable way of shopping is to wander from one end to the other of the Kastanienallee, because as well as plenty of stylish boutiques, it also has many colourful second-hand shops that all ooze Berlin charm. One of the nicest things about this pleasantly quiet boulevard is the handful of nostalgic cafés hidden away between the shops and which provide a perfect opportunity to show off your purchases straight away. And there are so many hip and stylish people out and about here it’s hardly surprising the Kastanienallee is nicknamed the “Casting Allee”. Simply get off at the Eberswalder Straße metro station and begin your shopping tour!

The Kiez* around the Kastanienallee and the corner of Oderberger Straße is a mecca for fashion aficionados on a mission to find that perfect item.

The best place to start is Bracas (Kastanienallee 103), a small café with typical Prenzlberg flair. Its second-hand baroque furniture and shabby chic create a homely and inviting atmosphere and it also happens to serve the best cinnamon and vegan cookies. Like everywhere else in the kiez, the staff are laid back and relaxed. The name of the store next door (Kastanienallee 101) tells you everything you need to know before you’ve even walked through the door - Bling Bling has an impressive collection of distinctive jewellery in styles ranging from flashy to ethnic. Earrings are displayed on trees, necklaces in open drawers.

There’s certainly no shortage of shopping malls, boutiques, department stores and posh shopping streets in the German capital. But where can you find typical Berlin fashion if you’re not interested in the big names and well-known brands? Julia Frase, Marketing Coordinator at the Berlin ARCOTEL Hotels, set off in search of the best Berlin fashion labels and shops and has put together a list of her favourites for us.

Four Berlin fashion designers have set up shop at Kastanienallee 12, from where they manage many of their own labels as well as a joint project, the Eisdieler. Right next door (Kastanienallee 11) is Mia Lou, a shop that at first sight appears inconspicuous, typical Berlin! And at the Heimat Berlin (Kastanienallee 13/14) young designers have set out to adorn the heads of Berliners and visitors alike with their own creations and hats from all over the world.

Danger, if you go much further down the road, there’s a good chance you’ll run out of money.

Somehow, the boutique Flagshipstore (Oderberger Straße 53) always seems to be crowded, probably because the tables are groaning under the weight of the trendiest labels to be found in Berlin. Frisur, Anne Schmuhl, format, z.B. ... and Herb are just some of the designers who present their collections here. The multi-label shop offers ethical and fair trade streetwear, high fashion and one-off garments. In a big city like Berlin you can soon run into someone who is wearing an identical outfit to your own - so why wouldn’t you want a unique piece of clothing.

Between 17 and 20 March 2016 some 1,300 exhibitors will be presenting a varied programme at the biggest fair of its kind in Europe: Old-timers, young-timers and neo-classics, motor cycles, model cars and retro-toys, restoration, spare parts, accessories and insurance companies, clubs, museums and much more.

Of course, no perfect weekend would be complete without a trip into the lovely hills that surround the city. One thing you definitely shouldn’t miss is Medvedgrad Castle that dates back to the 13th century. Fifteen years ago it was given a new lease of life and fully restored - and comes complete with a magnificent view of Zagreb!

Brösel und Käse vermischen, Ei-Ersatz, Kräuter und Gewürze zugeben und kräftig verkneten.

Zucchini Melanzani rote Zwiebeln Pilze (Champignons)

Quinoa 100 g Paprika (bunt) ¼ l Tomatensauce Thymian, Rosmarin, Knoblauch, Salz, Pfeffer

Das Gemüse in Würfel schneiden, in Olivenöl anschwitzen und mit der Tomatensauce aufgießen. Gewürze und Kräuter hinzufügen und ca. 15 Minuten köcheln lassen.

Käsekruste 200 g veganer Käse, gerieben 200 g Weißbrotbrösel 80 g Ei-Ersatz (MyEy), Petersilie, Liebstöckel, Salz, Pfeffer

Quinoa mit kaltem Wasser abspülen und mit ca.1,5 Liter Wasser 15 bis 20 Minuten kochen. Jungzwiebel, Karotten und gelbe Rüben klein würfeln und in Olivenöl anschwitzen. Mit Weißwein ablöschen, gekochten Quinoa zugeben und mit den Gewürzen abschmecken. Käsemasse auf die angebratenen Seitan-Medaillons geben und bei großer Oberhitze überbacken. Die Medaillons auf das mediterrane Gemüse setzen, die Quinoa dekorativ am Teller platzieren. Mit Chips und Kresse dekorieren.

Mix the breadcrumbs and cheese, add the egg substitute, herbs and spices and knead thoroughly

Dice the vegetables, sauté in olive oil and pour on the tomato sauce. Add the herbs and spices and let simmer for approx. 15 minutes.

Cheese Crust 200 g vegan cheese, grated 200 g white breadcrumbs 80 g egg substitute (MyEy), parsley, lovage, salt, pepper

Rinse the quinoa with cold water and cook for 15 to 20 minutes in 1.5 litres of water. Dice the spring onions, carrots and yellow carrots and sauté in olive oil. Quench with white wine, add the boiled quinoa and season with the spices. Sear the seitan medallions and cover with the cheese mixture and bake under an overhead grill. Place the medallions on a bed of Mediterranean vegetables and arrange the quinoa decoratively on the plate.

Garnish with crisps (e.g. potato spirals) and watercress.

Schicht 1: Schokomousse ½ Stk Avocado 150 g dunkle Schokolade

75 g Soy Whip, geschlagen 100 g Soya Culinary

Layer 1: Chocolate mousse ½ avocado 150 g dark chocolate

75 g soy whip, whipped 100 g soya culinary

Soya Culinary aufkochen, über die Schokolade geben und zu einer glatten Creme verrühren. Die halbe Avocado fein pürieren, unter die Schokocreme mengen und Soy Whip unterheben.

Bring the Soya Culinary to a boil, pour over the chocolate and mix until smooth and creamy. Puree the avocado well, add to the chocolate cream and fold in the Soy Whip.

Layer 2: Cherries 150 g amarena cherries 75 g amarena juice 75 g water

Die Kirschen klein würfelig schneiden, mit Amarenasaft, Wasser und Kirschwasser vermengen und mit Maizena abbinden.

Finely dice the cherries, mix with the Amarena juice, water and cherry brandy and thicken with Maizena.

Schicht 3: Oberscreme 150 g Soya Culinary 20 g Kirschwasser

Layer 3: Whipped Cream 150 g soya culinary 20 g cherry brandy

1 g Agar-Agar 150 g Soy Whip, geschlagen

Soya Culinary mit Agar-Agar aufkochen und ca. 5 Minuten kochen lassen. Kirschwasser hinzufügen, abkühlen und Soy Whip unterheben. Die Schichten nacheinander in ein dekoratives Glas füllen, dazwischen immer kurz anziehen lassen. Mit Pralinen, Hippen, glasierten Kirschen oder Minze toppen.

Bring the Soya Culinary with the agar-agar to the boil and simmer for approx. 5 minutes. Add the cherry brandy, allow the mixture to cool and fold in the Soy Whip. Place a layer into a decorative glass and allow it to set. Repeat the layers until the glass is filled. Top with pralines, wafer rolls, glazed cherries or mint.

Im November 2015 gab es im ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser Wien einen ganz besonderen Grund zum Feiern. Koch-Lehrling Daniel Schüttengruber und Restaurantfachmann-Lehrling Bernhard Smola haben es beim Amuse Bouche-Wettbewerb für TopLehrlinge bis ins Finale geschafft. Das Duo nahm zum ersten Mal teil und holte gleich den Innovationspreis. Der STORiESRedaktion haben sie von ihrer tollen Erfahrung erzählt.

In November 2015 the ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser Vienna had a very special reason to celebrate. Apprentice chef Daniel Schüttengruber and apprentice waiter Bernhard Smola made it into the finals of the Amuse Bouche competition for the best apprentices.

Although this was the first time the duo had entered the competition they came away with the Innovation Prize. They told STORiES about their fantastic experience.

Wie fühlt man sich als Gewinner des Innovationspreises?

Schüttengruber: Ich habe mich sehr gefreut und fühle mich jetzt noch besser vorbereitet auf meine Zukunft nach der Lehre.

Wie lang habt ihr für diesen Wettbewerb trainiert?

Smola: Intensiv darauf vorbereitet haben wir uns über fünf Wochen. Natürlich haben wir auch vorher immer wieder experimentiert. In Summe waren es doch drei Monate.

Wofür habt ihr den Innovationspreis bekommen?

Smola: Ich habe auf sehr spezielle Art einen ”Geräucherten Seesaibling auf Salzstein mit Limonengurke und geschmolzenen Kirschtomaten“ serviert. Das hat die Jury sehr beeindruckt.

Wer hat euch beim Training am meisten unterstützt?

Schüttengruber: Das war unser Küchenchef Johann Schwarz.

Er hat mir sehr viel Input gegeben, den ich sehr gut in neue Kreationen umsetzen konnte.

Smola: Ich habe viel mit unserem Barchef Johann Frühwirt geübt. Er hat mir auch gleich eine Menge gute Tipps für meine zukünftige Berufslaufbahn mitgegeben.

Was hat euch beim Wettbewerb am besten gefallen?

Smola: Die Ehrung im Rathaus war schon etwas Besonderes.

Schüttengruber: Den Austausch mit den anderen Kollegen fand ich auch sehr bereichernd.

Warum habt ihr euch für eine Ausbildung in der Gastronomie entschieden?

Schüttengruber: In der Gastronomie zu arbeiten, ist zwar anstrengend, aber es ist ein sehr vielfältiger und kreativer Arbeitsbereich. Ich kann eigene Ideen einbringen und lerne immer etwas dazu. Auch, dass es immer spannende, neue Food-Trends gibt, gefällt mir sehr gut.

Und zum Schluss: Was muss man mitbringen für einen Beruf in der Hotellerie?

Smola: Man braucht sehr viel Geduld und Durchhaltevermögen.

Es macht sich aber bezahlt, denn gerade in der Hotellerie kann man sich toll weiterentwickeln.

What does it feel like to be the winner of the Innovation Prize?

Schüttengruber: Of course, I was delighted and now I feel I’m even better prepared for my future after I have completed my apprenticeship.

How long did you train for the competition?

Smola: We had about five weeks of intensive preparation but of course we had always experimented before that. All in all, I would say it was about three months.

What did you win the Innovation Prize for?

Smola: I served “Smoked Arctic char on a Himalayan Salt Block with Lemon Cucumber and Melted Cherry Tomatoes“ in a very special way. That impressed the jury a lot.

Who gave you the most support while you were training?

Schüttengruber: That was our executive chef Johann Schwarz.

He gave me a great deal of input that I was able to use very successfully in new creations.

Smola: I have trained for a long time with our barman Johann Frühwirt. He also gave me a lot of good advice for my future career.

What did you like most about the competition?

Smola: The award ceremony in the Town Hall was very special.

Schüttengruber: I also appreciated the opportunity to talk to other colleagues and learn from them. That was very valuable.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship in the catering trade?

Schüttengruber: Working in the catering trade is extremely strenuous but it’s also very varied and creative. I can bring in my own ideas and I’m always learning something new. I also like the fact that there are always new and exciting food trends.

And finally, what qualities do you need for a career in the hotel industry?

Smola: First of all, you need a great deal of patience and stamina.

But it’s worth it, because the industry offers fantastic opportunities for development.

icht nur James Bond ist ein leidenschaftlicher Gin-Liebhaber. Auch die Agilität bis ins hohe Alter der 2002 verstorbenen britischen Queen Mum, die fast unglaubliche 101 Jahre alt wurde, führen viele auf ihr Lieblingsgetränk zurück, den Gin. Jork Meier, Bar Supervisor im ARCOTEL Rubin Hamburg, verrät im Interview, warum der würzige Wacholderbrand der Queen Mum wohl so geschmeckt hat.

WAS MACHT GIN FÜR EINEN BARKEEPER INTERESSANT?

Nicht nur ich persönlich habe ein spezielles Interesse an Gin, sondern auch viele unserer Gäste. Wie die Barkultur insgesamt, so erfreut sich auch der Gin in den letzten zehn Jahren einer großen Renaissance. Man kann ihn als Spirituose des Jahrzehnts bezeichnen, Gin ist einfach in.

Gin Tonic ist neben Cuba Libre der am meisten bestellte Longdrink an unserer crystal bar. Mit 50 verschiedenen Marken und vier Tonics können wir eine große Vielfalt von Cocktails, Martinis und mehr anbieten.

DIE QUEEN MUM GILT JA ALS EINE DER BERÜHMTESTEN GIN-LIEBHABERINNEN …

Ja, und dazu gibt es eine kuriose Anekdote: Die Queen Mum verfolgte eine Auseinandersetzung zwischen zwei Angestellten der Königsfamilie, während sie darauf wartete, dass man ihr ihren täglichen Gin Tonic serviert. Als sie ihn endlich bekam, kommentierte sie den Streit: ”When you two queens have finished arguing, this old Queen wants her Gin.“ Neben dem Gin Tonic war wohl auch der Martini einer der Lieblingsdrinks der Queen Mum. Eine aus ihrem Nachlass stammende Notiz, auf der sie ihren Butler bat, eine Flasche Gin und eine Flasche Dubonnet einzupacken, für den Fall, dass man sie später noch benötige, erzielte auf einer Auktion in London stolze 17.000 Pfund. Ein würdiger Preis für einen königlichen Gin-Fan!

WIE SOLL MAN GIN RICHTIG GENIESSEN?

THE QUEEN MUM IS ONE OF THE BEST-KNOWN GIN LOVERS …

Im Allgemeinen trinkt man Gin wie jedes andere hochwertige Destillat: unverdünnt und nicht zu stark gekühlt. Am besten aus einem Nosing-Glas, dessen Form sich nach oben verjüngt. So kann sich das Aroma im bauchigen Teil gut entwickeln und wird konzentriert der Nase zugeführt.

Gin ist eine klassische Mixspirituose, die gemeinsam mit anderen Aromen sehr gut zur Geltung kommt. In einem Cocktail oder mit Tonic und einer Gurkenscheibe entfaltet sich ein angenehmes Geschmackserlebnis. Sehr feine oder blumige Gins wie The Botanist, Geranium oder Tanqueray Malacca überzeugen in einem Martini, mit Olive oder Zitronenzesten. Martini ist schließlich auch das Lieblingsgetränk von James Bond!

Yes, and there’s an amusing anecdote about that: The Queen Mother once overheard two royal servants arguing about some trivial matter while she was kept waiting for her daily gin and tonic. Eventually, she got fed up waiting and called out, “When you two queens have finished arguing, this old Queen wants her Gin.” Another one of the Queen Mum’s favourite drinks, besides gin and tonic, was martini.

After her death, a note instructing her butler to pack two small bottles of gin and Dubonet in case it was needed later fetched the princely sum of 17,000 pounds when sold at auction. A worthy price for a royal gin lover!

Generally speaking, gin should be drunk like any other high-quality spirit: undiluted and not too cold.

Ideally, you should also use a tulipshaped nosing-glass that allows the aroma to unfold in the lower round [H.M. Queen Mum] part of the glass before the smaller tapered opening concentrates the aroma before it is guided to your nose.

ot only James Bond is a Gin Lover.Britain’s Queen Mum was an incredible 101-years-old when she died in 2002. Many attributed her enormous vitality even in old age to her daily nip of her favourite drink, gin. Jork Meier, Bar Supervisor at the ARCOTEL Rubin Hamburg, reveals why this spicy spirit made of juniper berries was the Queen Mother’s favourite tipple.

Gin is typically used for mixing with other ingredients and comes to the fore well with other aromas. In a cocktail, or mixed with tonic and a slice of cucumber, it reveals a pleasantly fresh flavour. Very subtle or floral gins like The Botanist, Geranium or Tanqueray Malacca are brilliant in martini with an olive or lemon zest. And as everyone knows, martini is James Bond’s favourite tipple!
