900 year old Skipton Castle is one of the best in England

STEEPED IN HISTORY a town with an industrial heritage

Skipton is perfectly located at the foot of the Yorkshire Dales on the River Aire with the Leeds to Liverpool canal running through its centre. The 127-mile-long canal was completed in 1816 and is popular today with narrow boats and leisure cruises.

The town is believed to date back to the 7th century, with its imposing castle being built around 1090. A popular visitor attraction, the castle is regarded as one of the most complete and well-preserved medieval castles in England. A 350-year-old yew tree planted by Lady Anne Clifford still survives today and is part of the fabric of the estate.

Skipton has an industrial heritage built on the textile industry. High Corn Mill is one of the oldest in North Yorkshire and is still powered by the waters of Ellerbeck. It is regarded as one of the finest mills of the 19th century and is grade II listed.

A TOWN WITH SO MUCH TO OFFER to cover

There’s nothing nicer than getting out in the fresh air and enjoying the beautiful scenery from a canal boat in this very special part of the world. The Leeds to Liverpool canal caters for everyone whether you’re looking for a leisurely canal boat trip, or you want to add in an element of urban adventure.

Aireville Park is ideally located in the town centre and is home to 20 acres of parkland with play area, bike tracks, putting green, multi-use pitches and café. It is also the venue for Skipton’s park run on a Saturday. The park delivers entertainment in abundance at its fake festival of tribute acts. Skipton even has its own annual triathlon held in the park.

And for those seeking to indulge in culture, Skipton Little Theatre hosts around five performances throughout the year. Craven Museum and Art Gallery takes visitors on an historic journey of the area, and there’s a traditional local cinema too.

The town is famed for its local markets and has held a royal charter since 1204, bringing together locally

grown and reared food with provenance. The market usually operates four days a week and has a bustling, lively atmosphere, selling everything you could wish for and including meats, cheeses and vegetables, arts and crafts stalls, and even Yorkshire-made blankets - sourced from Yorkshire sheep obviously. To this day, the town hosts an annual ‘sheep day’ to recognise and celebrate its rich history and culture.

Skipton boasts one the most scenic and tranquil golf courses in the North of England, enjoying the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales backdrop.

The town has cricket, rugby and football teams and if you’re looking for extra-curricular activities, you’ll be spoilt for choice with several after-school clubs, as well as cubs and scouts. The village cricket teams meet at the recreation ground, and benefit from the recently refurbished sports pavilion.
