Western Roots Run Deep: 1910 Western Wear in Stockyards City

Nestled in the heart of Stockyards City, 1910 Western Wear is more than just a store—it’s a tribute to tradition, craftsmanship, and family legacy. Owned and operated by Gina May, the shop stands as a vibrant addition to the historic district, offering hand-picked western wear, cattle hides, vintage items, and more.

The store’s roots trace back to 2021, when Gina purchased the inventory of Doc’s Boots, a longtime local fixture. “I knew Doc for years—he even repaired my boots and purses,” Gina recalls. “When the opportunity came to buy his inventory, we decided to honor the history of the space while expanding into a full western wear store.”

Hand-Picked Craftsmanship

What sets 1910 Western Wear apart is its dedication to quality. “We hand-pick almost every item,” Gina says. “From cattle hides to Indian artifacts, we carefully choose each piece to ensure it meets our standards.” The inventory is diverse, featuring boots made from materials like ostrich, rattlesnake, and bullhide, as well as furs, Kachina dolls, and Oklahoma Rose Rock.

The store also maintains ties to U.S.-made brands, including Cow Town Boots. Gina fondly remembers visiting their warehouse to witness the intricate process of crafting boots by hand.

Deep Ties to Stockyards City

Gina’s connection to Stockyards City runs deep. Her husband’s family has operated the May Cattle Commission Company since 1910, making them a cornerstone of the area’s history. The name 1910 Western Wear pays homage to this legacy.

Gina was born and raised in the Stockyards City neighborhood. Her father’s family located to the area when he was a young boy. He even worked at Cattlemen’s as a bus boy for a short time in his teenage years. Gina’s own daughters and grandchildren have continued the Stockyards City tradition, working at both the store and the family cattle business before pursuing other careers. “It’s a puzzle piece that fits perfectly,” Gina says.

A Family Affair

Family plays a pivotal role in the business. Gina’s daughter Jamie and nephew Sem help manage the store, ensuring it stays open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For emergencies, the store also stocks essentials like gloves, raincoats, and cattle

tack, catering to the needs of Stockyards workers and visiting cowboys all year round.

Generational Legacy

Gina also owns the historic Paddock Club, 1942 Exchange Ave, a bar where she first met her husband. He purchased the bar as a heartfelt gift to her 10 years ago, the cash only bar is a neighborhood staple, open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., with free pool for 15 years and a welcoming atmosphere for locals and visitors alike.

Proud of Stockyards City

“I’m proud to be part of the Stockyards,” Gina says. “It’s alive, it’s thriving, and it’s a testament to the businesses and families that have stayed strong over the years. For me, it’s more than a place—it’s home, history, and family all rolled into one.”

Visit 1910 Western Wear at 2210 Exchange Ave. to experience the legacy, craftsmanship, and warmth that Gina May and her family have woven into the heart of Stockyards City.

Boots, Bulls, and Banter: Spotlight on IPRA’s Rodeo Legacy

The Stockyards City Times recently sat down with Dale Yerigan, General Manager of the International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA), to discuss the organization’s history, mission, and contributions to the rodeo world. Below are highlights from the insightful conversation.

Overview of the IPRA

Established in 1957 as the Interstate Rodeo Association, the organization evolved into the International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA) in the early 1980s. Yerigan explains the mission: “We oversee and sanction rodeos, provide standardized rules, and approve personnel and stock contractors. Before the IPRA, rodeo lacked organization, leaving contestants vulnerable. Our goal has always been to ensure fairness, safety, and professionalism.”

The IPRA is governed by a board of directors with representatives for each rodeo event, stock contractors, and committees. “We strive to make rules beneficial for everyone involved,” Yerigan says.

Representation and Reach

The IPRA divides North America into four regions, ensuring equal representation across areas. While the organization has considered international expansion to countries like Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil, its current focus remains on North America.

OKLAHOMA’S HISTORIC STOCKYARDS CITY

Preserving Rodeo’s Culture and Traditions

Yerigan underscores the importance of preserving the heritage of the American West. “Rodeo celebrates the frontier spirit and the cattle industry’s role in shaping America,” he notes. Though modern elements like digitized music and pyrotechnics have been added, the IPRA remains committed to the traditions of the sport.

Fan Base Highlights

Yerigan points to St-Tite, Quebec, as a standout rodeo town. With a population of 3,500, it hosts over 600,000 visitors during its 10-day Festival Western de St-Tite. “It’s like the Woodstock of Rodeo,” Yerigan says, praising its electric atmosphere and fan enthusiasm.

Support for Youth Rodeo

The IPRA’s involvement in youth rodeo is a cornerstone of its mission. The International Finals Youth Rodeo (IFYR) in Shawnee, Oklahoma, has been running for over three decades and attracts 800-1,000 competitors aged 14-19 annually. “It’s the richest youth rodeo in the country and a breeding ground for future professional rodeo stars,” says Yerigan.

Community Contributions

Many IPRA-sanctioned rodeos serve as fundraisers for local civic groups and organizations. “From fire departments to church groups, these events raise millions of dollars for community projects,” Yerigan shares. A standout example is the North Washington, Pennsylvania rodeo, which has funded new fire trucks and equipment through its proceeds.

Sanctioning and Standards

IPRA-sanctioned rodeos adhere to strict standards, requiring approved personnel and livestock to ensure quality and safety. Contestants earn points at these events to qualify for regional and international finals, culminating in the IPRA World Championship at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma.

Adapting for the Future

The IPRA embraces modern technology, using social media and digital platforms to engage younger audiences. Contestants now enter events via the NextGen Rodeo app, a significant shift from the days of calling secretaries on single phone lines. “It’s more efficient and appeals to a tech-savvy generation,” Yerigan explains.

Stockyards City Connection

Relocated to Stockyards City in the 1990s, the IPRA finds its headquarters a perfect fit. “Being part of the Stockyards community aligns with our western way of life,” Yerigan says. Visitors from around the world often stop by, drawn by the iconic cowboy culture.

Memorable Visitors

Yerigan recalls unique visitors, including a group from Indonesia fascinated by American rodeo. “The cowboy hat is one of the most recognized symbols worldwide,” he notes, reflecting on the global appeal of the cowboy image.

Looking Ahead

As the IPRA prepares for the 2025 International Finals Rodeo, Yerigan remains passionate about the organization’s mission. “Being part of the IPRA means celebrating tradition while embracing progress. It’s rewarding to see how rodeo brings communities together and inspires future generations.”

Rodeo Cinema Celebrates Centennial Anniversary with New Programming and Renewed Focus on Community Arts

Rodeo Cinema, Oklahoma’s City’s beloved not-for-profit arthouse theater, marks a remarkable milestone in 2025 as it celebrates 100 years of cultural and artistic significance. To commemorate this centennial year, the historic cinema is launching a new era of programming, spearheaded by R&R Management Group, a team known for its innovative and communityfocused approach to arts and entertainment.

Starting in January 2025, Rodeo Cinema will unveil an exciting slate of movies, live music, and performances that aim to honor its century-old legacy while forging a bold future. The inaugural event under R&R Management Group’s direction will take place on January 24, 2025, with a special screening of The Daughter of Dawn, a silent film masterpiece shot in Oklahoma. This landmark film, recognized for its unique cultural and historical significance, sets the tone for Rodeo Cinema’s commitment to celebrating both local heritage and global artistry.

A Century of Enchantment

In a world with 41,999 cinemas across the

OKLAHOMA’S HISTORIC STOCKYARDS CITY

United States, Rodeo Cinema stands apart as a singular gem in Oklahoma City—a place where art transcends the screen. Unlike conventional theaters, Rodeo Cinema offers a deeply personal experience, transforming audiences from passive viewers into a dynamic community. It is more than just a place to watch movies; it is a cultural haven where misfits, eccentrics, and creatives find their home.

“Our mission has always been about more than just film,” said Shannon Moree Smith, General Manager for Stockyards Rodeo Cinema. “For a few magical moments inside the theater, strangers are united, sharing in the emotions, thoughts, and beauty of the art before them. We’re thrilled to continue that legacy of storytelling into our second century, with new programming designed to inspire and connect.”

A New Era of Programming

R&R Management Group brings a fresh perspective to Rodeo Cinema, promising an eclectic mix of art that includes:

• Classic and contemporary films that challenge, entertain, and inspire.

• Live music performances showcasing both local talent and celebrate artists.

• Theatrical and multidisciplinary performances to elevate the art experience.

The team’s vision aligns perfectly with Rodeo Cinema’s legacy as a cultural hub for the community. “Rodeo Cinema is not just a theater; it’s a cornerstone of Oklahoma City’s creative soul,” said Melodie Garneau for R&R Management Group. “Our goal is to build on that foundation, offering programming that excites, educates and brings people together.”

Located in the Heart of Stockyards City

Rodeo Cinema proudly call Stockyards City its home, a historic district that encapsulates the rugged spirit and industrious past of Oklahoma City. Established in the early 1900’s, Stockyards City grew around a booming livestock trade, becoming one of the nation’s most significant center for cattle

and meatpacking.

Stockyards City is a living tribute to Oklahoma’s western heritage. Its vibrant community emerged alongside the Oklahoma National Stockyards, which began operating as a public livestock market in 1910. At its peak, the stockyards attracted businesses, restaurants, and retail shops that served the growing workforce and its families. Today, Stockyards City remains the world’s largest stocker and feeder cattle market, blending its historic charm with modern attractions like Rodeo Cinema.

“Stockyards City offers visitors a unique glimpse into Oklahoma’s history while continuing to thrive as a hub of culture and commerce,” said Melodie Garneau. “It’s the perfect location for our theater, where the old meets the new in celebration of community and art.”

Join Celebration

Rodeo Cinema invites the community to join its year-long centennial celebration, starting with the January 24 screening of The Daughter of Dawn. Tickets and event details are available at: https://rodeocinema.org

As Rodeo Cinema embarks on its second century, it remains steadfast in its mission to provide a space where art, history and community converge.

About Rodeo Cinema

Established in 1925, Rodeo Cinema is Oklahoma City’s only not-for-profit arthouse theater, offering a unique space for audiences to experience the transformative power of art. With its historic charm and visionary programming, Rodeo Cinema continues to be a cornerstone of the local arts community.

Grace Rescue Mission: Nonprofit Spotlight

Interview with Scott Allen, Director of Community Ministries

A Legacy of Service and Faith

Since its founding in 1950, Grace Rescue Mission has been a cornerstone of hope and healing for Oklahoma City’s underserved populations. Originally established as a ministry of the downtown Baptist Church, the mission relocated to Stockyards City in 1971, where it has operated ever since. Scott Allen, Director of Community Ministries, has dedicated 21 years to this life-changing work.

“Our mission is to meet the physical needs of those who darken our doorstep, giving us the opportunity to address their spiritual needs,” Allen shared. “May 2025 will mark 75 years of Grace Rescue Mission, and across the street, the Baptist Mission Center will celebrate its 100th anniversary.”

Grace Rescue Mission’s enduring legacy is one of transformation, offering food, clothing, shelter, and spiritual support to those in need. With a focus on “loving people to Jesus,” the organization averages 300 life-changing conversions annually.

Comprehensive Programs for the Community

The mission’s services are designed to address a wide range of needs:

OKLAHOMA’S HISTORIC STOCKYARDS CITY

• Hot Meals: Free meals are served three times a day, Monday through Friday, and twice a day on weekends.

• Food Pantry: Families can access groceries every Thursday at the Baptist Mission Center, with provisions lasting up to two weeks.

• Clothing Closet: Open to the public on select days, this resource primarily stocks men’s clothing to serve the mission’s focus on aiding homeless men.

• Medical Services: A free clinic across the street provides access to doctors, a full-service pharmacy (excluding controlled substances), and referrals for dental and eye care.

The mission also offers an educational program, helping individuals work toward GEDs, diplomas, and even college degrees, while removing financial barriers like transportation and meals.

The SAFE Program: Breaking Cycles of Destruction

One of the mission’s hallmark initiatives is the SAFE Program (Setting Addicts Free Eternally). Rooted in biblical principles, this year-long commitment helps participants identify and overcome destructive behaviors. The program boasts an impressive success rate, with over 80% of graduates breaking free from cycles of addiction and self-sabotage.

“Many of our guys struggle with what I call the ‘Trifecta of Doom—a vehicle, a source of income, and freedom from structure,” Allen explained. “It takes time and support to break patterns that have taken a lifetime to form. But when they succeed, it’s life-changing.”

Collaboration with Stockyards City

The mission’s relationship with the local community is one of mutual respect and support. From maintaining public spaces to responding to business concerns, Grace Rescue Mission has become an integral part of Stockyards City.

“When I started here, we had a bad reputation,” Allen admitted. “Now, I’m proud to say we’ve turned that around. We’ve built strong relationships

with local businesses and organizations, proving our commitment to being good neighbors.”

How You Can Help

Community members and organizations can support Grace Rescue Mission in many ways:

• Donations: Food, clothing, and financial contributions are always welcome and can be dropped off at 2205 Exchange Ave., Oklahoma City.

• Volunteering: Groups can assist with projects such as building maintenance, painting, and event support.

• Partnerships: Local businesses have provided invaluable support, from donating food to supplying boots and clothing.

For more information or to donate, visit the mission’s page on the Metro Baptist Network website at https://www.mbnokc.net.

A Ministry of Miracles

Reflecting on his years at Grace Rescue Mission, Allen remains inspired by the daily miracles he witnesses.

“Every day, I see God’s hand moving in this ministry,” he said. “It’s all about planting seeds, tending them, and reaping the harvest. And that harvest is the lives we’re blessed to see transformed.” As Grace Rescue Mission approaches its 75th anniversary, it continues to embody its founding mission: meeting physical needs while bringing hope and healing to the most vulnerable among us.
