OKLAHOMA’S HISTORIC STOCKYARDS CITY
Langston’s: A Legacy of Western Heritage
BY: Sunny Martinez
Dave Miller, the General Manager of Langston’s Stockyards City location, takes pride in the rich history of the company, which dates to 1913. Dave shared insights into the evolution of Langston’s and the unique culture it fosters.
Originally a general merchandise store, Langston’s catered to diverse needs, from groceries to hardware, evolving over 111 years into a premier western wear clothing store. Miller, who joined the company in 2000, oversees operations and apparel buying, ensuring a curated selection of western-style merchandise.
One fascinating aspect of Langston’s is its Stockyards City location, established in 1949. Initially spanning 7,000 squarefeet, it has expanded to over a 22,000 square-foot store. Miller reminisces about the building’s colorful past, once home to bars, a drugstore, and even a Western wear retailer.
Langston’s is a family-owned and operated business, preserving a traditional employer-employee relationship. With staff members with decades-long tenures, Langston’s fosters a sense of loyalty and camaraderie uncommon in modern retail.
Miller’s involvement with the Stockyards City Main Street board for nearly two decades reflects his commitment to preserving the area’s western heritage. He believes the association has been instrumental in maintaining the district’s authenticity while promoting growth and community spirit.
For Miller, Stockyards City isn’t just a place of business; it’s a way of life. He praises its slower pace, genuine camaraderie, and unwavering integrity, making it a beacon of authenticity in an increasingly fast-paced city. Whether it’s the nostalgic charm of yesteryears or the genuine warmth of its people, Stockyards City holds a special place in the heart of those who call it home.
In an era where authenticity is a rare find, Langston’s stands as a testament to timeless values and enduring traditions, inviting visitors to experience the true essence of the American West.
Stockyards City Main Street receives Accreditation
BY: Debbie Harrison
Main Street America recently annouced the programs that have achieved Accreditation status in recognition of their commitment to preservation-based economic development and community revitalization through the Main Street ApproachTM
The 2024 network designated Main Street members includes 800 programs that earned this Accredited status nationally, the top designation tier, for demonstrating a proven track record of achieving outcomes in alighment with the Main Street Approach and exceptional performance in the six standards of community evaluation.
The program’s performance was evaluated through assessments conducted by Stockyards City Main Street personnel, board of directors, and the Oklahoma Main Street Center, which works in partnership with Main Street America to identify the programs that meet rigorous national community evaluation standards. These standards provide the Main Street America network with a strong foundational framework to review progress, recognize strengths, understand trends, and identify strategies that move Main Street programs forward. Programs must demonstrate a strong commitment to the Main Street model, meet a set of baseline requirements, and achieve outcomes in six areas: board-based community commitment to revitalization; inclusive leadership and organizational capacity; diversified funding and sustainable program operations; strategy-driven programming; preservation-based economic development; and demonstrated impact and results.
Congratulations to Stockyards City Main Street!

STOCKYARDS CITY ARTBEAT
BY: Kathryn Walker Richardson
Bob E. Palmer, PhD, Oklahoma artist and educator, retired in 2014 to business and private life after over four decades of teaching art. His final position as an educator was a Professor of Art, in the Department of Art, in the College of Arts, Media and Design with University of Central Oklahoma, in Edmond, OK.
Dr. Palmer’s many notable accolades include; “2001 Outstanding Oklahoma Higher Education Faculty Member”, “2007 Oklahoma Art Educator of the Year”, and “2013 Governor’s Art Award in Community Service,” presented by Honorable Mary Fallin, Governor of the State of Oklahoma. “Slice” Magazine also named Dr. Palmer as “One of the Visionaries in Arts in Oklahoma”.
From the small town of Walters, Oklahoma, Dr. Palmer is probably best known by his over 3,800 murals around the state of Oklahoma, Canada, Mexico and Europe. These public works reflect not only his love for historical accuracy but also our western heritage such as depicted on the north facing wall of Shorty’s Caboy Hattery in Stockyards City, Oklahoma.
“Creating art is the way I breathe, live, and dream. It is me at my best,” states Palmer.
With inspiration from impressionists like Monet and Van Gogh and other Baroque painters, Palmer enjoys taking it BIG—“I gravitate to painting large. My hope is to connect with viewers in a way that they may share in the experience or allow them to recall their own”.
With his thriving mural business, Palmer Studios, Bob continues to elevate the ‘mundane’ to ‘art’ status with the support from wife, Carolyn, and family while living in Bethany, OK.
SADDLES, TACK, ROPES, RODEO GEAR & BOOTS!
“My work is my best language–communication far greater than speech,” says Bob.
Dr. Palmer continues to paint, adjudicate art shows, conduct workshops, hold memberships in several art and professional organizations, and wrote and published a book about his many murals and the stories behind them: Painting Oklahoma and Beyond.
“Through the art of murals, we are able to touch the heart and memories of our historic past and pass on that heritage in a visual form to our children and community,” states Bob.
