Stockfish 2018 Reykjavíkurborg fagnar Stockfish kvikmyndahátíðinni sem mun nú í fjórða sinn lífga upp á marsmánuð með hlaðborði nýrra kvikmynda. Hvað er betra en að hverfa inn í rökkvaðan kvikmyndasal og horfa á fræðandi og skemmtilegar myndir - gleyma sér um stund. Gott bíó er nefnilega ekki bara glens og gaman. Kvikmyndir hafa áhrif. Við kynnumst óvenjulegu fólki, fáum nýtt sjónarhorn, lærum um ný málefni og fáum innsýn inn í hugarheim sem er okkur oft algjörlega framandi. Hátíð eins og Stock Fish er ómissandi vettvangur fyrir allt kvikmyndagerðarfólk og okkur er heiður að öllum þeim erlendum gestum sem leggur leið sína hingað til að mynda tengsl við innlenda og erlenda gesti sem sækja hátíðina heim. Fjölmargir leikstjórar, handritshöfundar og framleiðendur kynnast kollegum frá ýmsum löndum. Af þessu geta, og hafa sprottið, samvinnuverkefni, sem eru ómetanleg fyrir kvikmyndaiðnaðinn. Fjölmargar kvikmyndir verða sýndar á hátíðinni að þessu sinni og hafa margar þeirra unnið til verðlauna á erlendum kvikmyndahátíðum og ekki verið sýndar á Íslandi áður. Hin árlega stuttmyndakeppni, Sprettfiskurinn, verður á sínum stað. Veitt eru vegleg verðlaun sem styðja við kvikmyndagerð ungs og upprennandi kvikmyndagerðarfólks á Íslandi. Film festivals are an essential part of city life, and the City of Reykjavík welcomes the Stockfish Film Festival, which will now be held for the fourth time. What’s better than sitting down in the cinema and enjoying a good film, and forgetting the hustle and bustle of every day life for a while. Movies can affect people in so many different ways. They are a feast for the vision, we learn to seet hings from different perspectives, learn new issues and get insight into a world of mind that is often completely foreign to us. Festivals like Stockfish are an indispensable platform for professionals who are attending the festival. It encourages collaboration between domestic and international film makers which has proven invaluable to the film industry. The films on the Festival this year, are from various countries, many have won prizes at foreign film festivals and have not been shown in Iceland before. The annual short film show, Sprettfiskurinn, will be in place. Awards for the best short film is intended to support the cinemamaking of young and aspiring filmmakers in Iceland. In recent years there has been a lot of discussion on gender equality in the film industry and this year there will be a seminar where film-making women from the Nordic countries share their personal experiences from different sides of cinema making and discuss gender equality in the film industry following #MeToo. Íslensku kvikmyndagerðarfólki er vel kunnugt um þessa sjóði ESB, því úr þeim hafa komið styrkir meðal annars til sjónvarpsþáttanna Fanga og Ófærðar, kvikmynda eins og Fúsi, Hrútar og Svanurinn. Einnig höfum við stutt við Bíó Paradís, sem og RIFF kvikmyndahátíðina. Ég er viss um að hið góða samstarf sem við eigum á þessu sviði sem öðrum muni eflast og aukast enn á komandi árum. Við hjá sendinefnd Evrópusambandsins gleðjumst mjög yfir því að styðja enn á ný við Stockfish kvikmyndahátíðina, sem hefur sannað sig sem fastur liður í menningarlífi Íslendinga. Það er okkur sönn ánægja að geta stuðlað að því að fyrsta flokks evrópskar kvikmyndir séu sýndar á Íslandi. Í ár kemur langstærsti hluti myndanna á Stockfish frá löndum Evrópusambandsins og er það vel. Frá Kýpur til Portúgals og frá Finnlandi til Möltu liggja langar leiðir. En þegar í kvikmyndasalinn er komið er enginn slóði of langur að feta, úr einum menningarheim í annan. Góðar kvikmyndir lýsa fjölbreytileika ólíkra þjóða um leið og þær sýna okkur hve mikið við eigum sameiginlegt. Þetta á ekki síst við um myndir frá Evrópu, heimsálfu sem hafði barist innbyrðis svo ótal oft áður en Evrópusambandið var stofnað 1952. Í Evrópu erum við svo heppin að tala fjölda tungumála, trúa á alls konar guði og enga, aðhyllast ótal stjórnmálaskoðanir og eiga óteljandi listhefðir. Ef til vill jók þetta áhættuna á stríði okkar í milli fyrr á öldum, en nú er þetta það sem sameinar okkur. Fjölbreytileikinn. Virðing fyrir hvort öðru. Samstaða. Við erum stolt af sérkennum okkar en líka af sérkennum nágranna okkar. Við þolum hvorki yfirgang hinna sterkari né

The Delegation of the European Union to Iceland is delighted to once again support the Stockfish Film Festival, which has proved itself to be a fixture in the Icelandic cultural scene. We are truly happy to be able to play our part in bringing high quality European films to Iceland. This year, I’m pleased to say, most of the films on show at Stockfish come from the EU countries. There may be huge physical distances from Cyprus to Portugal and from Finland to Malta. But once we enter the cinema, no amount of kilometres can keep two cultures apart. Good films portray the diversity of different nations while simultaneously displaying how much we all have in common. This in particular applies to movies from Europe, a continent whose countries had been at war countless times before the birth of the Union in 1952. In Europe, we are lucky to speak many languages, to believe in many gods and none, to be partisans of various political views and to possess countless traditions in the arts. In the past, this diversity may in some degree have increased the likelihood of warfare between us, but now it is what unites us. Diversity. Respect for one another. Solidarity. We are proud of our special traits while at the same time we also take pride in our neighbours’ special traits. We cannot stand the aggression of the strong nor oppression by a minority. We should all have equal rights and opportunities. These values are reflected in all good film productions and therefore the European Union puts emphasis on strengthening the film industry through the MEDIA programme, which is a part of the Creative Europe fund. The people in the Icelandic film industry are well aware of these
EU funds, since they have received grants for TV shows like Prisoners and Trapped, for films like Virgin Mountain, Rams and the Swan. We have also supported Bíó Paradís as well as the RIFF film festival. I am confident that the good cooperation we enjoy in this field as in others will be increased and strengthened in the years to come. Enjoy the festival! A war criminal in hiding forms a relationship with his only connection to the outside world - his maid. The trust between the two is tested as authorities close in. A humble story of two people opening up to each other and starting an unusual and unlikely friendship. The Icelandic actress Hera Hilmars plays the lead in the film alongside Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, Schindler’s list, Lucky number sleven).The film’s director and screenwriter, Brad Silbering, is known for films alongside City of Angels, Casper, Moonlight Mile, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. Margverðlaunuð og tilnefnd mynd sem hefur fengið lof gagnrýnenda. Aðalleikkona myndarinnar hefur verið sérstaklega verið lofuð fyrir hlutverk sitt, en hún er transkona sjálf eins og aðalpersóna myndarinnar. Myndin var m.a. tilnefnd til Golden Globe sem besta erlenda kvikmyndin og er einnig tilnefnd til Óskarsverðlauna 2018 sem besta erlenda myndin. The film tells of Marina, who is in a loving relationship with older partner Orlando who unexpectedly dies. Marina, who is transgender, faces discrimination and hostility from both Orlando’s family and government officials while also contending with her devastating grief. A Fantastic Woman is a touching and a harrowing film from the award-winning director Sebastián Lelio. The lead actress Daniela Vega has been praised for her acting, but she is a transgender like the main character the plays. The film was nominated for a Golden Globe as the best foreign film and is nominated for a Oscar in 2018 as well in the same category.

Myndin er eftir þrítilnefnda Óskarsverðlauna leikstjórann Agnieszku Holland og hefur unnið til fjölda kvikmyndaverðlauna, þar á meðal Silfur Björninn á Berlinale hátíðinni. Myndin var framlag Póllands til Óskarsverðlaunanna. Janina Duszejko, an elderly woman, lives alone in the Klodzko Valley where a series of mysterious crimes are committed. Duszejko is convinced hat she knows who or what is the murderer, but nobody believes her. Agnieszka Mandat, who has been praised and won awards for her acting in the film is a festival guest and will attend a Q&A screening of the film. The film’s director, Agnieszka Holland will also “attend” the Q&A screening on March 10th through Skype. The three-time Oscar nominee Agineszka Holland’s murder mystery SPOOR is the winner of many film awards, including the Silver Bear at Berlinale. It was also Poland’s entry in the race for the best foreign-language film at the Academy Awards.

Sixteen year-old Nisha lives a double life. At home with her family she is the perfect Pakistani daughter, but when out with her friends, she is a normal Norwegian teenager. When her father catches her in bed with her boyfriend, Nisha’s two worlds brutally collide. Iram Haq, the film’s director and screenwriter, is a festival guest. She’ll attend a Q&A screening of them film and she’ll participate in the panel “Nordic Female Filmmakers Meeting Point” (see under “Events”). The film has been nominated and won many awards, there among the film was nominated as the best nordic film at Göteborg Film Festival, the biggest film festival in the Nordic countries.

Ola er fjórtán ára stúlka sem axlar of mikla ábyrgð á föður sínum og einhverfum bróður. Rætt er við dóttur, eiginkonu og móður fremstu meðlima hægrisinnaða flokksins Gullinni dögun í Grikklandi, sem sitja bakvið lás og slá. Þær gæta vel að því sem þær segja í viðtali við leikstjóra myndarinnar en þegar þær stöðva viðtalið til að ritskoða leyfir leikstjórinn myndavélinni að rúlla áfram.
Ola is a fourteen-year-old girl has too much on her plate taking care of her father and her autistic brother. The viewer gets the unique chance to follow her hard life taking care of her family, but maybe all is not lost. The film’s DOP Malgorzata Szylak is a guest at the festival and will attend a Q&A screening of the film.
The daughter, wife and mother of the most prominent members of the far-right Golden Dawn Party in Greece, now behind bars, are being interviewed. They are avoid any slips of the tongue during interviews. But while they stop the interview to overview it, Bustnes leaves the camera running.

Sprettfiskur Shortfish Shortfish is Stockfish’s short film competition. All the films are premiered in Iceland at the festival. The winning film will be announced at the closing ceremony - Saturday March 10th. The winner will be awarded with 1 million ISK in equipment rental from Kukl. Örvarpið Örvarpið is a platform for Icelandic microfilms and is intended for everyone with interest in film art and other art forms - experienced and inexperienced people, young and old. In the fall of 2017 a committee consisting of Eva Sigurðardóttir and Sindri Bergmann, chose 10 projects to be screened on RÚV’s homepage (The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service). These projects are screened at Stockfish and Örvarpinn (Örvarpið’s prize) will be awarded for the best project during Stockfish’s closing ceremony, Saturday March 10th.

Arne Bro is originally a documentary film director and now the head of the Documentary and TV Department at the National Film School of Denmark. He has a number of documentaries about social, educational and theological problems, and has taught in a wide range of countries, always focusing on the individual’s personal film language.
Steve Gravestock is a senior programmer at TIFF - Toronto international film festival, one of the largest film festivals in the world. This event is a unique opportunity to meet him and join him in a festival talk about programming for film festivals, and in particularly how films get chosen at festivals and how film festival programming works.
Gestir Guests Like every year the festival invites filmmakers from all over the world to attend the festival as the festival’s guests. This year guests from different parts of the world with different roles in the film industry will attend the festival. Most of these guests will attend a Q&A screening of their film, participate in a panel or conduct a lecture, workshop or festival talk.
