50 years of coeducational expertise

Originally a School for girls, St Michael’s became coeducational in the 1970s.

We have been perfecting our delivery of coeducation ever since.

Today, we aim for gender balance in each of our cohorts so that St Michael’s students experience genuine coeducation, and the multitude of benefits realised when all genders are learning and developing their values, together.

Our successful track-record as leaders in the delivery of coeducation is evidenced by our consistently high VCE results, with gender-balance reflected in our top-performers.

In keeping with our emphasis on developing student voice and agency, we were one of the first schools in Victoria to remove gender-based uniform requirements, based on the recommendations of students.

As part of our commitment to authentic coeducation, child safety, and wellbeing, St Michael’s, a Victorian Respectful Relationships Lead School, has been contributing to best practices in ‘healthy relationships’ for many years. Through our ongoing commitment to child safety and wellbeing, we provide the necessary resources for staff, students and families to maintain our child-safe culture.

Embedded in the Curriculum from the early years through to Year 12 and with a range of Co-curricular and Extended Tuition programs throughout the year, all students undertake age-appropriate learning focussed on growing their selfawareness and ability to navigate personal relationships.

As students mature into the senior years, they are supported by dedicated pastoral and community service staff to actively explore issues such as gender-based violence and LGBTQI+ rights – all in a collaborative and safe environment.

Founded by the Sisters of the Church, our School’s founding Values remain steadfast –Dignity, Respect, Care and Compassion.

Patrick Hughes (OM 1996)

I think St Michael’s has helped me become a more outgoing person who is more willing to take things on. I’ve learnt to juggle many activities in my schedule, and to feel comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people, a skill that I am sure will be useful throughout my life. I think most importantly, my education at St Michael’s has taught me the importance of balance, encouraging both academic and extra-curricular endeavours. I feel that I am a now well-rounded individual, largely thanks to my time at the School.

Holistic education

Our comprehensive educational program engages students intellectually, physically, and socially, providing valuable critical thinking opportunities and encouraging autonomous and collaborative learning. The rich and diverse curriculum and co-curricular programs challenge students while enabling them to reflect on their individual growth.

We know that leaders of the future will be those with the ability to think creatively and critically. That’s why at St Michael’s, we are passionate about providing students with a diverse range of learning experiences within and beyond the classroom, with a strong focus on developing the core competencies of:

• Creativity

• Collaboration

• Character

• Critical Thinking

• Communication

• Citizenship We achieve this through:

A comprehensive academic offering with an extensive range of subject choices

In addition to delivering all core subjects of the Victorian Curriculum, we offer over 35 elective subjects at Senior School level, with a diverse range of options – from Software Development to Chinese Language, Theatre Studies, and Music Performance.

A wide variety of co-curricular activities

Alongside a rich co-curricular program including Sport, Music, an expansive Co-curricular Club program, our Extended Tuition Program is available Monday to Friday in the mornings and evenings and offers a wide range of programs for individual student interests, such as Robotics, Soccer, Yoga, Tennis, Entrepreneurship, and Arts and Craft.

Exceptional teaching staff

Our ability to deliver a well-rounded education is enhanced by the exceptional teaching talent that we source, with many of our educators possessing industry connections and actively contributing to professional fields such as the arts, elite sport, and technology in their lives outside of work.

An innovative and

long-established

approach to Outdoor Education/ Experiential Learning

Our Experiential Learning Faculty’s innovative programs are offered from Prep to Year 12 and fuse the curriculum with personal development and once-in-alifetime experiences in some of the most naturally and culturally rich places on earth. There are local, interstate, and international programs available to students based on year level and subject, such as the Biology Excursion to the Great Barrier Reef for Year 10s and the ‘Penguin Squad’ Signature Program for Year 3s which immerses them in researching the Penguin colony on Port Phillip Bay.

While our students continue to achieve excellent results in the VCE, our goal is to remain ahead of the game as we challenge the ATAR as the sole definition of educational success for young people. Our research partnership with The University of Melbourne’s New Metrics team seeks to uncover a more dynamic way to measure students’ progress, taking into account the fact that leadership in a techdominated future will require much more than ‘specialist knowledge’, as the division of work between humans and machines becomes increasingly ambiguous. Parallel to Standardised Testing and the VCE, we are embedding additional frameworks for assessing student progress that focus on the abovementioned competencies.

St Michael’s students report greater overall satisfaction with their schooling experience*

The Class of 2024 participated in the annual Independent Schools Victoria Exit Survey, which compares our students’ experience at St Michael’s to those of other students in 112 similar independent schools across Victoria.

The K–12 journey

As a one-campus school of 1200 students from Kindergarten to Year 12, we know our students and nurture them as individuals. Our community, comprising students, staff, parents, alumni, and educational partners, supports our ‘wellbeing-first’ approach.

This focus on student happiness and wellbeing often leads families to choose us over schools that prioritise one-dimensional academic performance markers.

Wellbeing and inclusion are integral to our culture and are embedded in our Teaching, Learning, and Caring Framework, guiding our approach to both education and pastoral care.

St Michael’s Early Learning Centre

Focused on preparation for primary schooling, our Early Learning Centre (ELC) educators provide a nurturing and calm environment for children and integrate play, rest, learning and life skills into each child’s day. ELC students visit other areas of the St Michael’s campus, where they can engage with older students and academic staff as part of their learning.

Safety, inclusion and progress

Known for our inclusive culture, St Michael’s is committed to modelling Contributing Citizenship and breaking down barriers between our School and the broader Melbourne community.

Rather than being a place of exclusivity, we want our students to understand their responsibilities as Michaelians, and to be given the frameworks and encouragement to seek purpose in their studies and lives, remaining curious about and open to difference.

We have a zero-tolerance approach to bullying and discrimination, and we are committed to courageous decision-making and considered conflict resolution. We do not shy away from problems when they arise – whether it be a social, emotional or learning challenge. Our goal is always to restore harmony, improve supports for the affected individual/s, and to stand by our policies and values where internal resolutions cannot be achieved.

Bullying prevention

At St Michael’s Grammar School, we have a zero-tolerance policy towards bullying. We are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment where all students

feel respected and valued. Our approach includes proactive education, clear reporting mechanisms, and swift, effective responses to any incidents of bullying. We encourage students to speak out and seek help if they experience or witness bullying.

Wellbeing support

Student wellbeing is at the heart of our community. We provide a range of support services to address wellbeing concerns, including access to school psychologists, wellbeing programs, and a dedicated Wellbeing Committee. Our goal is to ensure every student feels supported, understood, and empowered to thrive both academically and personally.

Phone and device use

We recognise the importance of balancing technology use with face-toface interactions. Students in Years 7 to 11 are required to lock their phones in their lockers during school hours to minimise distractions and promote a healthy learning environment.

St Michael’s is recognised as a Microsoft Lighthouse School. This distinction highlights our commitment to innovative

and inclusive learning experiences, supported by Microsoft 365 tools and Surface devices. This ensures all students and staff have access to the necessary tools for effective learning and teaching.

DRCC (Dignity, Respect, Care, and Compassion)

Our values of Dignity, Respect, Care, and Compassion (DRCC) are the foundation of our School culture. These values guide our interactions, decision-making, and community expectations. We strive to create an inclusive environment where every member of our community feels valued and respected.

Learning enrichment and extension

St Michael’s provides tailored support to meet the diverse needs of our students. We offer enrichment and extension programs to challenge and engage students, as well as targeted support for those who need additional assistance. Our goal is to foster a love of learning and help every student reach their full potential.

Embedding healthy relationships and conflict management into our Curriculum

Our Curriculum includes comprehensive programs on healthy relationships and conflict management. These programs aim to equip students with the skills to build positive relationships, resolve conflicts constructively, and navigate social challenges. We emphasise respect, empathy, and effective communication as key components of these programs.

On-site Psychology services

Our School Psychology Service supports students' social, emotional, and academic wellbeing. FAQs

What are the intake years at St Michael’s?

St Michael’s key intake years are 3 Year Old Kindergarten, Preparatory, Year 4, Year 5, and Year 7. Places in non-intake years are dependent on the capacity and gender balance of the preferred year level.

Where is my child on the waitlist?

Due to the changing nature of waitlists, the Student Enrolments Team is not able to advise you of your child’s actual position at any point in time. However, we are here to support you throughout the process and will keep you informed of any updates.

If I change my child from one waitlist to another, do I need to pay the application fee again?

No, the application fee does not need to be paid again if you transfer to another waitlist. You can change your preferred entry year at any time by contacting the Student Enrolments Team.

How likely is it that my child will be offered a place at St Michael’s?

While we cannot predict the likelihood of an offer, our Student Enrolments Team is dedicated to assisting you through the process and will provide guidance and support at every step.

Will my child need to sit an academic test to enter St Michael’s?

St Michael’s is an open-entry and nonselective School. Academic tests are not used as part of the enrolment process (except in the case of scholarship applications).

Our family is moving to Melbourne at short notice from overseas/interstate. Do you have any places set aside at St Michael’s for families in this situation?

You are encouraged to contact our Enrolments team directly to discuss your unique situation.

My child has additional learning needs; how will you assess their application?

We are committed to supporting all students, including those with additional learning needs. In addition to an internal review of the information supplied with your Pre-enrolment Form, you and/or your child may be asked to participate in conversations/interviews with relevant staff and/or supply further documentation. This helps us understand how we can best support your child’s educational journey.

I have just received a Pre-enrolment Form; does this mean there is a place available for my child?

The Pre-enrolment Form is sent to all families on the waitlist two years prior to the preferred entry year and does not indicate an available place. This form confirms your intention of enrolling your child in the nominated year and provides up-to-date information regarding your child. Completing this form is an important step in the enrolment process.

I have just been asked to attend an interview with my child. What is involved?

The interview is conducted by a senior member of staff and is designed as an informal conversation with your child to determine whether St Michael’s is the right fit for your family. It’s a great opportunity for us to get to know your child and for you to ask any questions you may have.

What are the disadvantages of starting independent schooling from Year 7 rather than kindergarten/primary school?

Structured learning environments, resourced on a K–12 campus give students strong foundations for learning during the most important years of their development. Starting at a K–12 school from Kindergarten/Primary years also enables children to develop foundational relationships and familiarity with the school environment, setting them up for success as they approach senior schooling.

What are the benefits of coeducation?

Coeducation at St Michael’s provides a balanced and inclusive learning environment where boys and girls learn together, fostering mutual respect and collaboration. This setting mirrors the real world, helping students develop strong social skills and preparing them for future workplaces and communities. Coeducation encourages diverse perspectives, enhances communication skills, and promotes equality, contributing to well-rounded personal development.

Does St Michael’s have weekend Sport expectations?

Yes, St Michael’s has weekend sport expectations for students participating in certain sports. This commitment helps foster team spirit, discipline, and a sense of responsibility. Specific details about weekend sport requirements will be provided by the respective coaches and sports coordinators.

Which scholarships are available? What do you look for?

We offer scholarships in two categories: ‘Contributing Citizen’ and ‘High Achiever’. Applicants may indicate the Scholarship for which they wish to apply, however, students may be considered for a Scholarship from an alternative category. In keeping with our commitment to assist students who otherwise may not be able to benefit from a St Michael’s education, a family’s financial situation is carefully considered, and we give a higher weighting to those for whom the Scholarship would have a significant financial impact. The total number of new Scholarships awarded annually depends on the number of applicants, their strengths against the criteria, and available funding.
