Criteria for entry to TAFE involves demonstrating minimum literacy and numeracy skills or AQF (Australian Qualifications Framework) qualification level. TAFE Courses are split into competitive and non-competitive categories for entry purposes. About 5% of courses are competitive and applicants will need to meet selection criteria. Getting into the competitive courses involves a point system. Students will gain points (maximum 90 points) towards selection criteria through:

Applicants who can demonstrate minimum literacy and numeracy skills will be assessed and ranked against the above selection criteria. Offers will be made to applicants with the highest total point scores. A selection interview or the submission of a portfolio of achievement may be required for some courses. Workplace learning is the best way for school students to fulfil the work experience component for TAFE entry. It includes Workplace Learning – Endorsed Units undertaken in Year 11 and in Year 12. Units of Competency recognised nationally, undertaken through the CareerLink program can, when relevant, contribute to TAFE entry.
