In 1881, God gave a small group of miners a mission to bring to these mountains the world’s greatest treasure: the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, the Eucharist, and the Faith and Charity that flow from Him.
Today, that mission has spread from the streets of Old Town Park City, to the meadows of White Pine Canyon, to the Heber Valley and beyond. St. Mary’s seeks to evangelize, catechize, give back in Charity, and enrich the community through the Catholic Faith and its intellectual, artistic, and cultural traditions. To bring all the treasure of Jesus Christ, for the salvation of souls, and the Greater Glory of God!

In the light of this joyful and hope-filled Easter, the Church mourns the passing of our shepherd, Pope Francis. On Easter Sunday, the Gospel reading instills in the hearts of the faithful a moment of profound joy: when we go to the tomb to mourn the passing of our Lord, he is not there. Within this moment is a flutter of confusion, of potential heart-break that his body has been stolen, of stunned disbelief that the Lord is no longer with us, neither in life nor death. However, once Peter notices a strange detail, that the burial cloths had been left behind and that the sudarium which covered his head had been neatly rolled and left in a separate place within the tomb, a spark of hope ignites within the new leader of the Apostles.
Easter is a season of celebration, that the glimmer of hope and belief that initially found its way into the heart of Peter on that morning of the Resurrection spread to the other Apostles, then to the ends of the world. Peter did not immediately see the resurrected Christ; rather, he saw the signs of his Resurrection, and believed. In our own lives, we need the hope and belief of others, particularly our shepherds, to instill in our hearts that same sense of hope and belief in the Resurrection that we identify as the foundation of our faith. Peter’s successor is primarily charged with fostering the hope of the Resurrection in the souls of those for whom he is responsible, all 1.4 billion of us. There have been popes most skilled in the intellectual tradition, administrative duties, political tact, and even public engagement. But the primary responsibility he has in this profound office is to be a pastor for all, to emulate the first in that office by taking the hope that was first found at the empty tomb of Christ and sharing it with the others. Pope Francis was, first and foremost, a pastor. Throughout his clerical life, he turned away the opportunities to ambitiously climb through the ranks of the Church through the typical means and instead focused on the souls for whom he was immediately responsible.
O God, immortal shepherd of souls, look on your people’s prayers and grant that your servant Pope Francis, who presided over your Church in charity, may, with the flock entrusted to his care, receive from your mercy the reward of a faithful steward. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
Much will be said in the news of his legacy, but the most important and the most emblematic of his primary charism is also the most simple: he was a shepherd among his sheep.
This should not be misconstrued as a display of false humility for show; before he was known to the world as our Pope, he was Jorge Bergoglio, the man who took the bus with many of the same people who called him their shepherd as Archbishop of Buenos Aires. We ought to see him as he wanted to be seen, not as a Christ-type but as a Peter-type, one of us who was thrust into a position of responsibility, who took his role seriously, though never forgetting that he was just as human, just as flawed, and just as much of a servant of the Lord as each member of the Church is.
That first Easter morning was going to be a day of mourning, though it immediately became evident that it would be the most joyful day in all of history. The celebration of Easter continues, even today; though we will mourn the death of our Holy Father, the day of his passing is no coincidence–we are meant to celebrate his life at the same time we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord. In the poor, in the suffering, in the mundane, Francis saw the lifeblood of the Church. He saw it because he was in its midst, sitting next to it on the bus, welcoming it with open arms whether he was a Jesuit pastor or the successor to Peter. On the morning of Easter while it was still dark, Peter did not yet see the risen Christ. But because he saw the signs, he believed. By the next day, Peter had seen the face and shared in the intimate presence of his Resurrected Lord.
We pray and hope, by looking at the signs just as Peter did, that in the risen light of Easter, Pope Francis will look upon the face of His Lord today and share in his intimate presence. May he rest in peace.

The entire Church mourns the death of the Holy Father, Pope Francis. In cathedrals, basilicas, parish churches, shrines, and chapels the Holy Eucharist will be offered for the repose of his soul. Communities and individuals will ask God to bestow his infinite mercy on the man who served the Church as Bishop of Rome. These liturgical and devotional resources have been prepared by the Secretariat of Divine Worship.

As Catholic Christians, we believe that Creation is sacramental: everything that is created is a sign of the greater, invisible reality of the divine. At the pinnacle of Creation is the human person, whom God the Father made in imago Dei — in the image and likeness of Himself. The human person, then, is the Father’s greatest work of Art, and there is nothing more glorious (or beautiful) than the fully alive person — the human being at worship.
The art that Catholics bring to worship - paintings, sculpture, church architecture, and in particular, sacred music — imitates the beauty of the imago Dei, and in this sense, sacred art is always at the service of both God and the human person.
In this lecture, we will explore the interplay of three beauties: the beauty of God, the beauty of the human person, and the beauty of sacred art. We will contemplate the ways in which God uses Beauty to draw humankind to Himself, most especially in the celebration of the Eucharist. We will come to see Beauty as God’s “love language”: the means by which He communicates His affectionate love to the human family.

Dear sweet Jesus, I kneel before you and give you thanks for the great treasure of the Most Blessed Sacrament. May it nourish me with a lively faith and with true repentance. May your cross be my strength, your resurrection be my life, and your grace be my sure confidence. With the Father and the Holy Spirit, your love is the full satisfaction of my desire, my refreshment, and my own love. May you be glorified in all things everywhere and may your peace be the joy of all people. Amen.
