TERM TWO 2023, STEM OVERVIEW

Promoting home/school connections and creating opportunities for informative conversations with your child

Wh. Receptions

Receptions will learn the fundamentals of programming. Through ‘Scratch Jr’ activities, learners will use block-based programming to control characters to move, jump, dance and sing. To demonstrate their grasp of these concepts, students will create an animation by programming a sequence of instructions and share their final project on SEESAW. By the end of the unit, students will have gained foundational knowledge in programming and developed basic computational thinking skills.

Year 1

Year 2

Year 1 students will further develop their programming abilities using Scratch Jr. Building on their foundational knowledge, students will explore more advanced programming concepts such as 'Start on Touch', 'Repeat', 'Start on Message', and other key programming blocks. By applying these new skills, learners will demonstrate their understanding by programming a playable game. They will then share their work by uploading a screen recording of their game to SEESAW. Through this course, students will continue to enhance their computational thinking skills and gain valuable experience in programming games using Scratch Jr.

Year 2 students will further develop their understanding and skills in computational thinking. Building on their prior experience with block programming in Scratch Jr, students will progress to using Scratch, a more advanced programming application. Through guided activities, students will extend their knowledge and apply new programming concepts to create their own Scratch animation. By the end of the unit, students will have gained valuable experience in programming and developed their computational thinking abilities, preparing them for more advanced studies in computer science.

Year 3

Year 4

Year 5

Building on their prior experience with block programming in Scratch, Year 3 students will use their knowledge of the engineering process to design and program their own 'Whack a Mole' game in Scratch. Through directed activities, students will apply programming concepts such as loops, variables, and conditional statements to bring their game to life.

Year 4 students will build on their programming skills and expand their knowledge of block-based programming using Scratch. They will be introduced to advanced programming concepts such as ‘Sensing’, ‘Control’, 'Variables' and more. To demonstrate their understanding of these concepts, students will create a playable maze game by programming a sequence of instructions.

Year 5 students will build on 3D modelling with the program, ‘Tinkercad’. They will create a 3D model of the product they have developed from their Design Thinking process for STEM MAD (Make a Difference).

Year 6 Year 6 students will continue to build on their 3D modelling skills using the program 'Tinkercad'. They will use their product formed from their Design Thinking process for STEM MAD (Make a Difference) and create a 3D model of it. Through direct activities and guidance, learners will explore the various features and tools available in Tinkercad to design, edit, and refine their 3D models.

SPECIAL EVENTS THIS TERM

STEM MAD is designed to acknowledge and promote STEM learning initiatives that address real-world problems and demonstrate how students in Catholic schools take action that matters by designing a service, product or innovation, to make a difference (MAD) to others or the environment.

dynamics, and melody, as well as have opportunities to apply what they have learned by playing and performing in class, both individually and as part of an ensemble. By the end of the term, Year 3 students will have a solid understanding of the basic elements of music and the skills necessary to play the recorder, sing, and create beautiful music. Moving ahead, we will explore how ukuleles can provide a harmonic background to the melodies they have learnt on the recorder.

Year 4 This term in Performing Arts & Music, Year 4 students will be learning to play the ukulele and xylophone and will utilise technology to enhance their musical skills. They will start by learning the basics of playing individual chords on the ukulele and playing melodies on the xylophone. Later in the term, students will be using technology such as ‘GarageBand’ to assist in recording and creating loops, which they can then perform along with. This will give students the opportunity to explore their musical creativity and experiment with sound. Throughout the term, students will also learn about rhythm, tempo, dynamics, and melody, as well as have opportunities to apply what they have learned by playing and preparing for a mini concert. Students will collaborate with Year 5 and 6 classes to create a mini concert performance opportunity, where they will showcase their newfound skills on the ukulele and xylophone. By the end of the term, Year 4 students will have a solid foundation in playing both the ukulele and xylophone and have experience collaborating with other classes to create a musical performance.
