TERM ONE 2023, STEM OVERVIEW
Teacher: Nicholas Polvere
Promoting home/school connections and creating opportunities for informative conversations with your child

Receptions
Year 1
Receptions will examine fairy tale problems and using the engineering process they will be able to generate, develop and record design solutions to these fairy tale problems. Their solutions will be recorded through drawings, models and describing.
Students will investigate different STEM challenges and the explore the characteristics and properties of different materials and components that are used to produce designed solutions
Year 2
Students will investigate different forms of transport and use a wide range of different objects, materials, tools, equipment, and techniques to create and improve these types of transport with certain challenges that must be met. Students will use the engineering process to understand How does it work?’, ‘What purpose does it meet?’, ‘What do I like about it?’ & ‘How can it be improved?
Year 3
Students will examine how gravitational force can affect different types of materials of a product. Using Virtual Reality headsets students will identify different civil engineering bridges and will be tasked to engineer a bridge that meets certain requirements. Students will use the engineering process when designing the solutions to the task.
Year 4
Students will investigate the effects of drought and water crisis within Australia. Students will have to gather data and develop design ideas, processes and solutions based on a specific criterion to create a drought tolerant garden. Students will be able to display their data in information tables, column graphs and picture graphs.
Year 5
Students will be introduced to 3D design modelling. Students will use the Design Thinking process to develop a solution for a real-

world problem. Students will use and acquire new computational thinking skills by being introduced to the program, Tinkercad.
Students will be introduced to the Design Thinking process. They will explore the process steps of Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test, and Implement. Students will use the Design Thinking process to develop solutions for a real-world problem. Their solutions can be displayed through either 3D Modelling or Augmented Reality.
