Next Month’s features: Stewartry Agricultural Show Red Kite Trail

Editor’s Note:

Hi There!!!

Well another eventful month coming up with both Castle Douglas Civic Week and Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities / Art & Craft Trail. Once again I am going to have to start blocking out parts of my social diary. I managed to get to both the Food Town Day and a couple of Spring Fling Galleries. It was tolerable weather but a really good turn out from where I was standing, but the events were, as always, worth turning out for whatever the weather. Hope to get a few photos in next month’s issue. I would like to thank Caroline Robertson from the Stewartry Agricultural Show, Calum Murray from the Red Kite Trail, and Becky Jones from the RSPB Mersehead for their help and support. And I hope that The Stewartry Link is able to do likewise, and if local businesses can lend the magazine their patronage I will be able to continue to support more local initiatives, projects and charities for the good of our community. Jo, The Ed

The Ark in Kippford

Now you don’t have to pack your own picnic, just head straight to The Ark in Kippford with the new Deli they have just added to their gift shop.

The Deli, which opened mid April, has now almost doubled the size of The Ark and the whole extension has made the place a lovely airy place to mill around all those pretty little gifts and souvenirs. Denise Yates, proprietor, prides herself on the local produce now supplying the Deli. She has sourced artisan bread from a Lockerbie baker, the pies and biscuits are made in Dalbeattie, there are Loch Arthur cheeses and she has specially made Jams and Chutneys. However in addition to the mouth-watering display behind the Deli counter Denise has thought up some fun picnic ideas with something for everyone. I couldn’t resist trying Denise’s “Kippford Seaside Special” while I was in visiting her. It consisted of ‘Local Hot Smoked Salmon’ with a Lemon & Dill sauce and green salad on an Italian olive oil & herb roll - £2.65 Bit more tasty than my normal tuna sarni that I would pack for a picnic I can tell you. On top of all of this The Ark is also soon to launch a web-site making their wonderful gift selection available all year round. The Ark, Kippford, 01556 620201

Selection of The Ark’s Picnics - more available Ÿ “Dog Walker” – includes Doggy treat and Whoopsy Bags Ÿ “Keeping up with the Jones’s” – a family picnic including a fun game and a lolly for the kids Ÿ “Just the two of us” – a romantic picnic, which includes a small romantic surprise We will also fill your flask. Just pop in or ring and order by phone to collect. - 01556 620201 4

TH

2011

Gates open at 9.00

Well we are gearing up to one of the biggest events in the Stewartry, the Agricultural Show. It celebrated its bicentenary in 2010 and has built up a distinguished history over the past 200 years, so the 2011 Show is one not to be missed! As well as a variety of attractions and entertainment throughout the day, some of the best livestock from all over Dumfries & Galloway and the Stewartry will be showcased in the main ring. Together with showjumping competitions, an open dog show, and a wide range of exhibitor and trade stands including the very best in locally-produced food and crafts, there will be loads to see and do. Some of the main attractions are the 7 stanes Mountain Bike Display team, Dog Agility, the Tug of War, the YFC Open Stock Judging as well as all the other varied competitions including an open dog show taking entries on the day. So look out for next month’s article for more details on what is going on. Stewartry Rugby Club Ground, Greenlaw Castle Douglas, DG7 2PW Free bus running hourly from Market Hill Car Park Entrance fee payable at Gate, Special rates for Children, OAPs and new for 2011 Families. Dumfries Farmers Market - Launching Sunday July 3rd I’ve also had news that there is now to be a regular Farmer’s market with a great selection of delicious, locally produced food and drink on Sunday 3d July, and on the first Sunday of the month from then on. The market will have between 20 and 30 stalls and will be held in the car park at Tarff Town and Country, Lockerbie Road, Dumfries. The site is just off the A75 bypass so it could not be easier to get to, there is free parking and the Tarff Town and Country shop and cafe is on hand for a quick pit-stop! Saturday 23rd July ~ Sunday 31st July

As many as twelve sculptors, many of international status, will be working outdoors on large pieces of stone sculptures in the ‘Artist’s Town’ of Kirkcudbright. This, the second such event, is called ‘Big Art for Kirkcudbright’ and aptly describes the scale of both the event and the pieces being worked on, with some of the large sandstone blocks initially weighing up to two Tons. The public will be able to see the exciting work in progress, talk to the sculptors and take in the whole event throughout the eight days, as well as benefit from the addition of these wonderful pieces of art of which, on completion, are left to the town to display for generations to enjoy. For further information, updates or to sponsor a sculpture, please contact: Andrew Macdonald, Scottish Showcase Gallery, Kirkcudbright, DG6 4DP 01557 339400, 07722 352 732, info@artnewsscotland.co.uk, or www.kirkcudbright.co.uk/bigart Please mention TheStewartryLINK when answering an advert

Restaurant Review Threave Garden Cafe

Unfortunately the day we arrived the weather was absolutely foul, which when dining at NTS Garden’s cafe means potentially you are missing the main thing you are hoping to see. However this is mainly about the food and immediate environment rather than the whole of the visitor’s attraction so that is what we concentrated on. The car park was roomy although not the most even. We dashed through the rain into the eye-catching, glass-walled octagonal entrance seeing a well stocked shop to the right and a large hall to the left. Following the familiar noise of a cafe we walked past the small exhibition in the hall to the brightly lit cafe which had a glass wall overlooking the first section of the gardens. The large hall and the cafe had a mobile separating wall and knowing that Threave Gardens also advertises itself as a wedding venue you could see how it easily becomes a nice size to house a wedding party plus entertainment. We headed up to the self service area to see what was on offer. The menu was not that extensive, but adequate for quality cafe. There were 3 main courses, 2 soups, and the usual choice of fillings for baked potatoes, paninis and toasties etc. My sister and I both chose a panini (Mozzarella + Haggis, Goats Cheese + Homemade Chutney) and my mum chose the Parsnip & Apple soup. I thought this item showed there was a bit of inspiration going on in the kitchen, although for those not quite as adventurous there was the safer option of Tomato and Carrot. Unless I was missing something from tasting the main courses the lunch selection was not as inspired as the soup, but more than adequate for a quick lunch. We picked up our teas and coffees, paid and found a table in the comfortably busy sitting area. There was a full coach load of visitors in the cafe which were easily accommodated in the spacious area amongst a few other small parties. It really is quite roomy with a nice mix of traditional and contemporary. It wasn’t long before the food was brought to our table. I was looking forward to trying out Mum’s soup, I was worried it might have been too sweet for a lunch, but there was just enough flavour to taste the

apple without the sweetness that often comes with cooked apples. It was surprisingly tasty, even for me despite not being a fan of stewed or cooked apples. We then thought we should really try the sweets. Mum’s on a diet so it was just Sis & I, we went for a ‘Lime Kiss’ and a ‘Citrus Poppy Seed Cake’. The Lime Kiss was a citrus fondant sandwiched between two sponge-like biscuits, sister’s cake was quite moist with a hint of lemon in the icing. Both were quite pleasant but was not quite in the ‘to die for’ category. On the whole it has a pleasant environment, a bright and spacious area with a lovely glass wall to look out on the garden as well as easy parking and an obviously amazing garden to explore. The food is pleasantly tasty for a quick lunch and would be a handy place to have a business lunch due to the parking but I was somehow expecting more from the food, perhaps I had too high an expectation to begin with. I am quick to say however that we had no complaints what so ever… except for the weather. Sampled from the Menu: Mozzarella & Haggis Panini Goats Cheese & Homemade Chutney Panini Parsnip & Apple Soup with homemade bread and butter ~~O~~ Citrus Poppy seed Cake Lime Kiss ~~O~~ Pot of Tea, Latte x 2 ~~O~~ £21.35

Rating 3.5 out of 5 Good Food, beautiful surroundings, modern spacious venue. The Parsnip & Apple soup shows inspiration, could do to see more of it. Threave Gardens, Castle Douglas, DG7 1RX 01556502575

CD Civic Week

23rd - 30th of July

Castle Douglas Civic Week is a major event in the local calendar, with lots of events throughout the week leading up to Douglas Day on Saturday July 30th. With all these events there is literally something for everyone to enjoy or take part in! Of course the events wouldn’t happen without the hard work and support of many people and businesses in Castle Douglas and the surrounding area. Equally, without the support of locals and visitors alike, coming and enjoying themselves and everything that’s on offer, Civic Week would not happen at all. Last year’s events were a great success and were blessed with great weather too. You can see images and videos at www.castle-douglas.com or Facebook on www.facebook.com/CastleDouglasCivicWeek and you can also see all the latest news on each event at either site. As we near the Big Week, you will be able to buy your Official Programme which this year will have a “lucky number” giving you the chance to win a great prize. To provide all this entertainment requires a lot of organising, and we are always on the look-out for people who would like to help out throughout the year and during Civic Week itself. Visit one of our websites and let us know how you would like to be involved. You will find it very rewarding.

From a spark to a flame: a decade of The Wickerman Festival

Win 2 FREE tickets Can you believe it? In 2011 we celebrate the 10th Wickerman Festival (2223 July). That’s ten years of serving up one of the most diverse, idiosyncratic music festivals in the UK, embracing an eclectic line-up which features a dizzying mix of rock, indie, punk, electro, techno, drum & bass, reggae and folk music. On this, the 10th anniversary there are ten stages ranging from the Summerisle (main) Stage, Scooter Tent, Acoustic Village, Axis Sound System Reggae Tent, Bass Camp, Greenman Inn, Headphone Arena, Ho Down Wendy House to the Solus ‘Emerging Scottish Talent’ Tent and for the first time the goNORTH Festival Tour Stage. All that plus the infamous burning of the giant 40ft Wickerman sculpture. The Summerisle Main Stage will play host to renowned acts Feeder, The Coral, Echo & The Bunnymen, Noisettes, The Hoosiers, The Bluebells, Gun and The Dangleberries. Joining them are some of the hottest up and coming acts including Yasmin, Sound of Guns, MOPP and The Stagger Rats. Taking to the stage following the burning of the Wickerman will be Craig Charles with his renowned Funk & Soul Club DJ Set. In addition to the blistering line-up, Ally McCrae (BBC Introducing) is confirmed as the compere for the Summerisle Stage in 2011. Feeder’s lead singer and guitarist Grant Nicholas said, “The Wickerman Festival’s reputation precedes it as being one of the most diverse in the UK. This will be our first ever appearance and we’re honoured to be headlining the main Summerisle Stage in their tenth year. Even better, playing on the Saturday night is an added bonus as it means we’ll get to stay on and watch the Wickerman burn!” The festival’s much-loved Scooter Tent is back with a bang featuring The Damned and From The Jam with support from King Kurt, Spunge, Department S, Middle Finger Salute, Crowns, Jericho Hill, Diddums, Fire Exit, Berry Tweed and the Chasers, and Rudy Alba. Root System will also make a very welcome return to the stage. Rising star Rachel Sermanni, championed by Mumford & Sons, and Stornoway superstar in the making, Dot JR, are set to headline at this year’s Solus Tent, the emerging talent stage of the festival. Solus celebrates the finest new acts on the Scottish music network and this year’s line-up doesn’t disappoint with Jack Townes and Dam Mantle also scheduled to appear. Further highlights at Solus will be four-piece Glasgow band Jack Townes and Dam Mantle, a solo star who also hails from Scotland’s largest city. A whole host of other bands and solo stars will also grace the stage including Bear Bones, Blochestra, Endor, Desalvo, Davey Horne, Black Sun Drum Corps, Randolphs Leap, RM Hubbert, Citizens, Vukovi, Miaoux Miaoux, Reverie, Letters and Trapped in Kansas. For a more chilled out approach, and a top spot amongst the Wickerman fans, the Acoustic Tent will feature up-and-coming folk stars Matthew and the Atlas, along with 24 other bands and singer-song writers including Augustalia, Qiku, The Loose Kites, 12

Playing this year: Rising Star, Rachel Sermanni

The Moonzie Allstars, jazz-star Henry Johnson and blues-inspired Al Hughes to name but a few. Also back by popular demand are Beth Fouracre and Earl Grey and the Loose Leaves, following wow-performances in 2010. Bass Camp, the festival’s Dance Village this year plays host to the Skiddle Tent, the Em-It Tent and The Landlord’s Daughter; the outdoor daytime stage. Break beat award-winner Krafty Kuts leads the way with Utah Saints, in the strongest line-up to date for the Em-It tent, with London-based tech-funk producer and DJ Meat Katie, Stockholm’s Peo De Pitte, underground favourite Mike Hulme, plus Easy B, Simon Jackson, Ray McKinney, Digital and Scott McCormack all taking to the decks. In the Skiddle Tent, joining one of clubland’s hottest figures Riva Starr and underground club stalwarts X-Press2, will be DOD, winner of the Mixmag and Blackberry International DJ Competition, as well as Nelski who works alongside the likes of Chris Lake. They will be joined by Wickerman regulars Sonny Wharton, Matt Hinde, James Ryan, Tim Forrester, Ki Creighton, Ginny K and some home-grown talent guaranteed to please local fans. As part of the festival’s anniversary celebrations, Skiddle.com has launched an opportunity for dance lovers to vote for their favourite tracks of the last decade. The results will then be compiled into an exclusive 10 year anniversary mix by Skiddle’s Sonny Wharton, and played as part of his set. Everyone who submits a track suggestion will also be given a free download of the final mix. Three deck wizard Sonny has risen through the ranks to join the DJ elite since being spotted by Renaissance in their DJ Mag mix-tape competition. With a residency at Manumission, sets at Amnesia, and slots at the world's best-loved clubbing institutions including Pacha, Ministry Of Sound, Godskitchen and Space under his belt, he's known as an innovator, a workaholic and a dance floor filler. Not only will there be music to suit every taste coming from every corner of the festival site, but there will be a whole host of extra activities, ensuring your weekend can be as jam-packed or as relaxing as you like. E-asy does it Sue Blain’s Five E’s for healthy living Ancient Chinese and Indian medicines, with meridians and chakras, have long been aware that health and well being are dependent on the free flowing energies that are each one of us. Their practices, whether herbs, meditation, exercise, acupuncture, remove blockages in our energy systems that prevent the body from naturally healing itself, as do homeopathic and flower remedies and Reiki Healing. Try using these 5 E’s, one for each finger, to maintain your health and happiness. Eat right, only highly nutritious food, what you need so your energies remain free flowing, ensuring your body can perform its many complex tasks with ease. Check for food intolerances. Eat a great variety of vegetables and fruit. They are the anti-oxidants; carotene, lycopene, lutein, their colour a useful guide, needed to mop up the aging free radicals that our bodies are constantly bombarded with. They are the alkaline–forming foods that our blood needs to balance the many acid-forming foods we eat. Eat raw as often as possible. Essential enzymes are destroyed during cooking. Include at least one salad meal a day, with fruit, nuts and vegetable sticks between meals. Obtain most of your fluids this way, and top up with water and herb teas between meals. Grow your own salad leaves and sprout seeds. Eat less. Most of us in the West eat more than we need, overburdening our digestive system, ageing us, making us physically and mentally tired and unable to function optimally. Check portion sizes. Go for quality not quantity. We need to experiment and challenge our habitual and conditioned way of eating. If sugar cravings are a problem use a chromium supplement. Exist in the present. Don’t shoulder the burdens of regret and guilt from the past. They deplete our energies, cause illness and prevent us from enjoying the present. Learn from past mistakes and try to move on. Forgive and forget. Choose to only remember the good times. You’ll be more focused and able to cope with life’s challenges. Plan for the future but don’t live for it. Hope for the best and free yourself from your anxieties. Don’t keep longing for what you don’t have, be grateful and appreciate what you have. If needed, seek therapeutic help, as described above. Energise! Shake off the negativity. Choose to be happy by being purposeful and creative. Go out, help others, exercise, and appreciate nature. Choose absorbing activities that inspire and uplift you, releasing endorphins and providing a sense of achievement. Don’t be too dependent on material things or other people. Be happy with yourself, as we’re meant to be, and then share this happiness with others. So start each day, the 5 E-asy way!

This historic image is taken from a post card held in the Stewartry Museum collection in Kirkcudbright, and shows Main Street Auchencairn as it was around 1903, when this post card was sent. It’s quite a busy street scene with the hotel brake or wagonette outside the Auchencairn Arms Hotel, now the Smugglers’ Arms. Further up the street, there is a milk-cart thought to be Sam Callendar’s from Chapelyard and even further up a woman is drawing water from the fountain erected to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. Look out for more historic images like this from the archives of the Auchencairn History Society and the Stewartry Museum in the forthcoming Auchencairn Calendar for 2012, a joint project between the Auchencairn History Society and Auchencairn Village Shop. Natural Therapy Q&A Questions to health@stewartrylink.com

Q- I have a family member who suffers from fibromyalgiathat is mainly in her back. Some days she feels fine but when she gets stressed and tired it flairs up quite bad, sometimes leaving her almost unable to walk. At one point prediagnosis the doctor suspected a broken back it was so bad. Any info and suggestions on the condition and coping with it? It would seem to be more common than I thought as I now know of 3 other people suffering with it. - Anon, Dalbeattie A- The term fibromyalgia is known as a diagnosis of exclusion, which basically means 'we don't understand what it is, but we do know what it isn't' (e.g: it isn't arthritis). Subsequently, those with fibromyalgia type difficulties may especially benefit from a holistic approach that seeks to address the underlying cause of any problems for that person. Warming circulatory stimulants like ginger or cardamom in your diet can help to deliver the blood directly to painful areas and clear away inflammatory debris. Traditional nerve tonics that also support the immune system (including wild oats, rosemary, ginseng or black cohosh) can help resilience, while useful painrelieving herbs include meadowsweet or willow bark. Relaxation is important, and counselling or emotional/behavioural therapies can often be helpful in learning how to pace yourself effectively. Galloway Activity Centre & the Paddlers for Life Dragon Boat Racing Team The Galloway Activity centre is situated on the banks of Loch Ken between New Galloway and Parton. They cater for families, individuals and groups alike and run sessions and NGB courses in lots of adventurous sports including Sailing, Windsurfing, Powerboating, Kayaking, Canoeing, Outdoor Laser Quest, Archery, Mountain Biking, Orienteering, Climbing/Abseiling and more... They have a range of accommodation for both activity and ‘quiet’ holidays. The accommodation includes the Bunkhouse Lodge (sleeping 20), Loch Side Cabins (2-6 berth) and camping pitches overlooking the loch. They also have an impressive Tipi (Wigwam) and two comfortable Mongolian Yurts, giving you a true wilderness experience. April was a big month as not only did they open up a beautiful new cafe overlooking the loch, they also gave a home to the first Dragon Boat in Scotland where the Paddlers for Life (Dragon Boat Racing Team) hold paddling sessions on Sundays The eagerly awaited boat arrived in April to glorious sunshine, and members of the Paddlers for Life charity took the chance to take the boat on her maiden voyage in the perfect conditions. Paddlers for Life Scotland South West is a newly established charity that has been set up by local people who want to be able to offer an accessible and beneficial sport to both those recovering from cancer and local people just looking to keep fit and have a bit of sociable fun. Chairperson for the charity, Lucy Carlow, said “We are extremely grateful to Macmillan, LEADER, Awards for All and the Robertson Trust for the funding we received to purchase our first boat and get the project off the ground. In addition we would like to thank Richard Herman from the Galloway Activity Centre at Loch Ken who has very kindly offered us the use of its excellent facilities. Already we have people who have finished their cancer treatments and want to start re-building their health, signed up to start paddling. It is an excellent way to meet new people, have fun and get back to normality after the upheaval of illness.” The gentle exercise of paddling, coupled with beautiful surroundings and good company have been clearly evidenced worldwide to be of particular benefit to anyone recovering from breast cancer and the related effects of its treatment. To celebrate the arrival of the boat at Loch Ken, Paddlers for Life Scotland South West will be holding an official launch day later this summer to allow local people the opportunity to come and see the boats in action and try paddling for themselves. To see open days and other events at the centre visit www.lochken.co.uk To find out more about the charity, please visit paddlersforlifescotlandsw.co.uk or email lindsay@paddlersforlifescotlandsw.co.uk. 18

Outdoors… I started my buisness Bottle Green Biking at the end of 2009. When I finished my Sports Degree at Strathclyde Universtiy I went traveling around NZ, and thats when I really fell in love with mountain biking! When I came home I set up a coaching, guiding and holiday company using the 7stanes mountain biking trails in Dumfries and Galloway. I wanted to try and inspire various groups to try mountain biking for the first time or improve the skills they already had, to allow them to get the most out of the sport. My customers ranage from families, schools, corporate groups, 1 to 1 tuition and groups of friends. One problem that I found when I first had the idea was simply, how do you start a business? I went along to the PSYBT and they helped me with everything from creating a business plan, choosing a strong direction to take things, helped me with a loan and provided me with a great business advisor. PSYBT haven't only helped me start a business they are also helping me to grow it. If you are interested in finding more out about Bottle Green Biking then go to www.bottlegreenbiking.co.uk

Blokarting was introduced to Dumfries and Galloway a year ago by 25yr old Carol-Ann Brown. As a keen outdoor enthusiast and water sports instructor , Carol-Ann saw a gap for this new and exciting Sport in Scotland so took the plunge and became self-employed, based herself on the beach and started F5- Extreme Beach Sports. Blokarting is a form of Land Yachting – a small 3 wheeled buggy powered by a sail and controlled using handle bars and a rope. It was important to Carol-Ann to offer a sport that was user friendly and available to everyone as she believes that we should all have the chance to do sports in our area. This year as things start to expand for F5 – Powerkiting will be a new activity by the end of 2011; allowing customers to take powerkite lessons before they head onto sports like kitesurfing, kiteboarding etc Carol-Ann received financial support from PSYBT, D&G Council and RBS to set up and has since become a PSYBT Regional Ambassador, helping other people aged 16-25 to set up in business. F5 has also reached the Regional Final for Business of the Year 2011 and is up against Ruth Asbery from Bottle Green Biking for this year’s title! The PSYBT is a charity who offer financial and business support to young people starting out for themselves. Carol-Ann says “the support they give you is invaluable – Ive met so many people and had lots of marketing thanks to the PSYBT”. You can book your blast on the beach by visiting www.f5karting.com ! 22

Garden View July ~ Gone to Seed Gardening is a hobby and, after a while, most people with hobbies find themselves experimenting. They get a bit creative and want to see if they can do something on the cheap, or for free, or simply find to out whether it’s possible to do something just for the simple pleasure of trying. Seed collecting falls into this category for me. Most seeds are not particularly expensive to buy, so why would I or anyone else want to collect our own? Well I can’t speak for anyone else, but I get a real buzz from collecting seed, knowing that I can perpetuate a favourite plant without any outside involvement. Sometimes I’ll collect seed with a fair degree of certainty that I’ll be able to raise hundreds of little seedlings, and sometimes I do it for the challenge, as not all seeds are easy to propagate. If you want to have a go at seed collecting (and be warned, it’s a highly addictive pastime) then here are a few tips. You will need: Large paper bags - I had real problems locating these until I remembered eBay. I bought 100 large bags for around £3. Plastic bags won’t do as they retain moisture and cause the seeds to develop fungus or go mouldy. Felt pen - for labelling. This is important as you will forget what you’ve collected even if you think you won’t!

Easy seeds to collect and grow Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist) Aquilegia (ladies bonnets) Papaver (Poppy) Digitalis Purpurea (Foxglove) Helianthus annuus (Sunflower) Cosmos bipinnatus (Cosmos) Lunaria annua (Honesty) You’ll soon discover many more. Happy collecting.

Box or trug - for carrying the bags of seeds around the garden. Small pair of scissors or secateurs – for snipping the heads. Choose a dry day with little or no wind. Select a healthy, pest and disease-free plant with seedpods which look as though they’re about to split. Label a paper bag (it’s much easier to do this first) then cut off the seedhead and turn it upside down into the bag. Place the bag into a dry place and wait for the seeds to ripen. Check regularly. When most of the seedpods have opened, tip out the contents on to a dry surface and separate all the seeds from any remaining bits of pod. Store the clean seeds in a small, labelled paper bag or envelope, in a cool dry place until ready to be used.

Galloway Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild The Galloway Branch of the Embroiderers' Guild meets in Castle Douglas (Parish Church, Queen Street) on the second Tuesday of the month (except August.) The photo shows members working on their contribution to the art work which is to be displayed at the Olympics next year: each Guild branch has been allocated a country and asked to provide post-card sized embroideries based on the country's flag. Castle Douglas has been given the Democratic Republic of Congo, which can be illustrated in any technique, using the colours of the flag, local designs or scenery. These will show the wide variety of skills of the members, from cross-stitch to applique work, all of which techniques are the kind of thing demonstrated in the talks the Guild has each month. In addition an extra group of the members meets to explore more advanced techniques (whoever heard of painting baby-wipes, using soldering irons and heat guns in embroidery?!) The main Guild members have exhibitions every two or three years and the 'Exploring Embroidery' group has had exhibitions annually, in the Mill on the Fleet and CatStrand and in September will be having one in the Tolbooth, Kirkcudbright. All those interested in needlework crafts are welcome, at whatever level of skills!
