Castle Douglas Community Bulletin Linked to the Day of the Region event 1st / 2nd October 2011 New Publication for the Castle Douglas Community Food Town Initiative and Civic Events Team welcome you to the first edition of the Castle Douglas Community Bulletin. Day of the Region is nearly here and the Food Town Initiative & Civic Week Initiative have been very pleased to be one of the driving forces behind this event, for the community by the community, here in Castle Douglas. It seems a long time ago when this first concept was being discussed with Leader D&G last October but now it’s here we just want to thank all the people who have helped make this happen. Over 60 participating groups are involved over the 2 days and we all wish to thank those volunteers in those groups who are involved in the event.

A UNIQUE SHOPPING EXPERINCE

Saturday Night - details on back page

We believe this is the first time in the town when we have had such a large community involvement reflecting such a wide range of activity, hobby, business and educational groups. The principles of Day of the Region, which is a European initiative and started in Holland, are to engage with the people of the town from all walks of life and give people an opportunity to learn what is available and to sign post the opportunities that are here in Castle Douglas, thanks to so many organisations that help people enjoy various activities and hobbies. Please come along to the town on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd October and see for yourself what is available, we think you will be surprised at the various options. There are a number of locations in the town highlighted by Day of the Region Banners but the main body of events are in easy walking distance of King Street, Market Hill, Lochside Park and the Community Centre on Cotton street. To help you have a good look round there is a double decker bus available to tour the events and it will be available at 10:00am until 3:00pm to take you on an hourly route to all main venues in and out of town. Some of the out of town events include free open day to Threave House & Gardens and the Glen Urr Valley Ice-Cream Farm. The bus starts its route at the Bus stop next to the swimming pool in town. We have provided this facility for the day but donations for the ride will be collected on board to those who may wish to help us cover our costs. On Market hill there will be an Exhibition Marquee with stands from various interest groups in and around the town showcasing and in some cases demonstrating their skills and interests. Next to this there will be a Performance Marquee where there will be performances from a wide range of interest groups including choirs, musical groups, dance, dog training and others. At Lochside Park there will be the Food Town Marquee where cooking demonstrations will take place through Saturday & Sunday together with Community Food stalls & some local producers. Businesses in the town will also have open days such as the Sulwath Brewery & Irving Home style Bakery. See inside this Bulletin for more detailed info.

The Committee is formed of a very small group of volunteers who organise fun and entertainment for the people of Castle Douglas and surrounding villages throughout the year. In the past 12 months they have organised a very successful Halloween event in Lochside Park and the annual Civic Week programme which this year saw some extremely entertaining performances such as the Edinburgh based The Clan Mountain Bike Display Team. Planning is now on the way for the Halloween/Fireworks event for 2011 which this year will be held at Threave Gardens in Threave Estate on Sunday 30th October between 6 and 8.30pm.

The local Stewartry Wind Band will perform at the start of this exciting celebration weekend.

Saturday 1st October Castle Douglas Town Hall 7:30pm - 11:00pm

Over several years the town has been served by the Castle Douglas Initiative (CDI), a small voluntary group who worked with the Community Council to deliver projects they were unable to carry out. In recent times they delivered the Skate Park and refurbished paths in Lochside Park. The CDI is now seen as too small in its remit to serve the people so it is planned to form a new committee to act on behalf of all the people in the town. This new body could be named the Castle Douglas Development Forum (CDDF). The aims and objectives of this committee would be to: Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

Promote CD as a tourist town Promote CD as a Unique Shopping Experience Promote projects that will enhance the town Obtain funding for community projects Produce a Newsletter for the town

Development It would be proposed to empower the CDDF to take forward projects on behalf to the town and could include finding the funding to finance any projects. They could develop short and long term plans for the town, in conjunction with D&G Council. Forum The committee would be made up of volunteers who would be working to a tight constitution as follows: Lead: The Chair Person would lead this team and make decisions on what things need to be achieved and by whom through regular liaison with the members . Chair meetings when deemed necessary, perhaps monthly. Office Bearers: Carry out their duties in support of the Chair Person in accordance with current rules. Project Worker(s): Raise funding and carry out the work agreed by the Committee. Standing Committee: The Chair of Food Town Initiative, Civic Events Committee, Lochside Theatre Committee, Community Centre Committee and Community Council organisations should nominate one of their members to act as their representative on the CDDF. Members: The members would be made up of all organisations not represented. They would be invited to meet with the main Committee at least quarterly.

Come and join us with

Local favourites Pete Garnett of Moishe's Bagel on accordion, Guy Nicolson of Moishe's Bagel on percussion, and Ruth Morris as leader on fiddle. Support acts will be local musicians from CD High School Bring your own Buffet and Bottle and have a fun musical and dance evening. Entrance will be by ticket - cost £4 which are available from the Tourist Info Centre on Market Hill and other shops in the town.

Agenda The full Committee would have a remit to: Ÿ Future Events - Provide a focal point for events and to de-conflict dates. Provide an annual events programme and a quarterly Newsletter to confirm events. Ÿ People/Volunteer Pool - Pool people and resources for the benefit of the community Ÿ Equipment - Procure and store equipment on behalf of the town Ÿ Facilities - Provide improved facilities for the more vulnerable categories of people of the town

More info see www.dayoftheregion.co.uk

Ÿ Projects - Carry out feasibility studies for ideas suggested by the people of the town

www.cd-foodtown.org

The CDDF would be registered for charitable status and act for those community groups who are not. If you have any thoughts about this proposed organisation or feel that you could contribute to its formation, please contact 01556 504872.
