The History of Ultimate Frisbee

By Steven Prusky

As owner and president of Windsor Securities, Inc. in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, Steven Prusky oversees an investment advisory firm that has been in operation since 1973. In his free time, Steven Prusky enjoys listening to music, traveling, and playing Ultimate Frisbee. Developed by Joel Silver, Ultimate Frisbee was first played in 1969 at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey. In 1970, Silver and two friends established the rules for what was then called Frisbee Football, which was based on a similar game that had been played at Amherst since the 1950s. Silver’s Frisbee game caught on at the college level soon after the rules were developed. In 1972, Rutgers and Princeton played the first intercollegiate game. Three years later, The National Collegiate Championships brought eight college teams to Yale for the first organized Ultimate Frisbee tournament. Silver eventually went on to enjoy a successful career in film, and the game he helped develop became popular throughout the United States and worldwide. In recent decades, Ultimate Frisbee has been one of the fastest growing sports in the country. Today, several organizations promote the sport, including the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) and the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL). Currently, AUDL oversees 24 teams throughout North America and hosts 168 regular season games each year. Brown University was an Ultimate Collegiate champion during Mr. Prusky's studies there.
