It’s taken 8 years but should last 80... Back in 2006 The Stevenage Society for Local History raised the notion of restoring the gates that once stood at the High Street entrance to The Avenue - the tree lined walk that runs along past The Thomas Alleyne Academy and finishes opposite St Nicholas Church on Rectory Lane. The hooks on which the original gates hung can still be seen on the northern pillar of the entrance and the committee had originally hoped to install a pair of wrought iron gates incorporating the words “The Avenue”. However, the Engineering Technician at the Council advised that gates would not be feasible owing to problems with access for public service vehicles. We then submitted drawings for a sloping wall to join the northern pillar incorporating a stone plaque with the words “The Avenue”. We also envisaged The Avenue circa 1900, published courtesy of John Amess. attaching metal plaques with a short history of the area. Unfortunately, this proved too costly and the wall had to be simplified. Instead of the metal plaques, a separate information board (pictured) containing a brief history of The Avenue, an 1881 map, and photographs proved a better (and more affordable) option. Fortuitously, by this time (2013) parts of The Haven in Ditchmore Lane were being demolished, and we were able to secure contemporary bricks to build the wall. The manager of The Haven was delighted that the bricks were to be recycled in this way. The remainder have been stored at the time of writing, and will be used to fill the gap between the southern pillar and the adjoining property in the future. Society members by the newly built wall. The information board was finally installed on 14th November 2014 completing everyone’s hard work. To quote member John Amess, the objective of this project has been “to see a more pleasing entrance to The Avenue, in keeping with the historic nature of Old Stevenage”. We like to think that this has been achieved and would like to thank all those that have supported the project and helped make it a reality. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service The theme of my article, this issue is Smoke Detectors. It may sound like a rather boring topic, but in the event of a fire in your home a smoke detector is NOT an early warning - it’s your ONLY warning! Injuries and deaths can be prevented if a smoke detector warning is given. People could get themselves and their loved ones out of a building quickly. Combined with an escape plan (these can be designed by Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service), and you have in place something that could be invaluable in the event of a fire in your home. Having and practicing an escape plan is a very good idea, especially if you have young children. You can make it fun, and rewarding children can result in evacuations being completed quickly and safely. If there are older people in your home, then make them aware of the ‘Stay Put’ policy! If the fire is not affecting the room they are in, then ‘stay put’ in there! Make sure the emergency services are aware of this. It’s always a good idea have a phone in the room you decide to ‘stay put’ in. When buying smoke detectors make sure they conform to British Standard 5446 part 1, and that they display a Kite Mark. Always fit the detector in line with what the installation requirements are. Alternatively, contact Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and we will come and complete a ‘Home Fire Safety Visit’ and fit any detectors required. We will also give you an escape plan. Finally, if you feel you have questions that need answering sooner rather than later, contact Stevenage Fire Station on 01438 202500 and the Operational crews will help to answer them. A Thank You Letter from The Messy Church: Dear SOTBCP, I am writing on behalf of the Messy Church team at Holy Trinity and Christ the King with a belated, but heartfelt thank you for the donation of £50 you gave us last year. We have increased the number of sessions we run each year and do not charge families to attend, so we’re extremely grateful for your generous donation, it has enabled us to buy resources for the children, and indeed adults, to engage in enjoyable art & craft activities. We were delighted with the number of families who attended the session linked with the lantern parade down the High Street at Christmas. Thank you for your support. Kind regards, Glynis Ireton, Churchwarden

A family photoshoot & photo of your choice Family Photography doesn’t need to be stuck in a studio! When you think about getting some ‘proper’ family photographs taken, do you think of a studio setting against a plain background? Are you worried that the big lights and equipment might be off-putting - or that your camera shy child might refuse to co-operate altogether? Or maybe your children love the camera, but all you get are silly faces, not natural expressions? Do you all love the outdoors, and photos of you stuck in a small, confined space just don’t reflect who your family is? Naturally Snapped Photography is the answer! Run by local mum Catherine Clarke since 2012, she takes families to places they love to go anyway - the park, a nature reserve, the local woods - and lets the kids run free. She walks, talks, runs and jumps right along side you all. She’s been known to go on mushroom hunts, make elf walking sticks, and carry girls over muddy puddles when their brothers have nicked their shoes! She has the ability to put even the shyest child at ease - and parents are then able to relax too. Catherine documents your family having fun together and captures real and honest moments, personalities, expressions, hugs, laughs - and love! Her photos tell the story of who you are as a family, against the beauty of a natural backdrop. To win a free family photoshoot and 10x8” photograph of your choice (usually worth £60), simply email the answer the question below along with your names and contact number to editor@thestevenagemagazine.co.uk

Question: When was Naturally Snapped Photography founded? Closing date for entries is 30 April 2015. The winner will be chosen at random from the correct entries received.

You can find out more at www.naturallysnapped.co.uk or facebook.com/naturallysnapped. Drop her a line at catherine@naturallysnapped.co.uk - she’d love to get to know you!

TERMS & CONDITIONS 1. No cash alternative available 2. Time & date of the shoot to be arranged with Naturally Snapped Photography directly and subject to availability 3. Prize includes one 10”X 8” print of winners choosing, any additional prints requested must be paid for separately.

A Long Weekend in France? On Thursday, 28th May 2015, a coach will travel to Autun in Burgundy for 30 Stevenage residents to celebrate the Annual Meeting of our 3 Twin Towns. We will be joined by friends from our other twin town, Ingelheim (in Germany) to be hosted in the homes of Autun families. They are very friendly and most speak some English so language is not usually a problem. The coach will return to Stevenage on Monday, 1st June and during the weekend we enjoy a number of events organised by Autun Town Twinning and the City Council. This is an opportunity to see the historic town of Autun, which is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and to experience local foods and wines. Also, you may make new friends with your hosts or with others that you meet. The trip is being organised by THE STEVENAGE-INGELHEIMAUTUN ASSOCIATION and the price is £150 each to cover the cost of the coach. Space is limited but anyone interested can e-mail tsiaa@hotmail.co.uk or write to TSIAA, c/o 423 Wisden Road, Stevenage, SG1 5JS. For more information about the Association go to www. tsiaa.org.uk or come to our next meeting on 6th March at the Council Offices at Daneshill House, Danestrete, Stevenage, SG1 1HN. We look forward to seeing you there.

Photomural highlights hometown achievers In 2014, Stevenage Borough Council commissioned a series of photographic panels along the Leisure Centre walkway, featuring Stevenage people with outstanding achievements. On 30 January, the art panel was unveiled and tenor, James Griffett, returned to his hometown for the occasion. James was born in Stevenage in 1939. He lived on Ellis Avenue and attended Letchmore Road Boys’ School. Of his headmaster, WH Roach, he later wrote, ‘ I have much to thank him for... He encouraged me, at the age of 7, to join the choir of Holy Trinity Church, awakening a love for singing and music.’ As his career progressed, he also received invaluable help from composers Elizabeth Poston and l-r James as a Choir Boy and infront of his portrait Charles Vale, Councillor Philip Ireton and MP Shirley Williams. After secondary school, James studied for four years at the Royal College of Music, winning many prizes, including the prestigious Dame Clara Butt Award. In 1968, with colleagues Paul Esswood and Mark Brown, he founded Pro Cantione Antiqua, which became a leading British choral group, specialising in a capella and early music. James is particularly well-known as a soloist. His repertoire ranges from early and Baroque music to that of 20th-century composers, including Benjamin Britten. He has performed at festivals throughout the world and recorded many CDs, including works by Monteverdi, Handel and J.S. Bach. He has done much to help aspiring singers, giving master-classes and workshops in Europe and, in England, forming the Northern Youth Choir. James was delighted to feature on the panel of musicians. He and his wife Cathy, greatly enjoyed the unveiling ceremony, and we were equally delighted to have him back. Margaret Ashby, 10 February 2015

MEET THE BUSINESS: Physio-Life Hi, my name’s Rachel Canning, and I am the owner and principal physiotherapist at Physio-Life. I've been working as a specialist physiotherapist for over 20 years, 16 of which were in the NHS as a Senior Physiotherapist in Neurological Disorders followed by the position of Senior Physiotherapist in Respiratory Conditions. My career has also seen me working at the Herts MS Therapy Centre and the private International Spinal Injuries Unit in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. In 2012, I set up Physio-Life – a specialist service to help patients improve their health and quality of life through neurological physiotherapy, vestibular rehabilitation and pulmonary rehabilitation. My main motivation for this was the drive to provide an outstanding and lifechanging service to patients without the restrictions that come with operating under the NHS. Initially, Physio-Life was a home visit service, but due to demand, this rapidly grew to encompass a clinic and in 2014 Physio-Life moved to a larger purpose-built clinic in Stevenage. The move allowed us to bring on board additional specialist physiotherapists. Physio-Life offers a wide range of specialist treatments including Saebo rehabilitation, Buteyko Breathing, Hydrotherapy and FES assessment. Being situated next to Musculoskeletal specialists - ASK Physio, has allowed us to offer a great partnership of varied but complimentary services. Our previous work in the NHS means we have a great rapport with local medical and healthcare professionals, which leads to more efficient communication. We also have strong links with specialist neurological equipment providers, which means free assessments and quick and easy access to any equipment patients may need. We work with a large number of private health care providers. We fit in with our patient's lives, offering clinic and home appointments in the daytime and evening. Finally, I believe continuous professional development is vital in my field of expertise, and I am hugely excited to be going to USA this April to expand my knowledge in the field of Vestibular rehabilitation. I have studied and trained extensively in this area with highly regarded physicians and therapists from the USA and look forward to doing so again.

The Body Matters At the time of writing this I am sitting in my nice warm house, as it is literally freezing outside. As a keen cyclist (regular readers will remember that I cycled London to Paris last year), one of the things I do not like about the winter is that I get less opportunity to ride due to fewer daylight hours, ice and snow. A year ago I met Roger, who is the same age as me (let’s just say, born in the 1970s!), and had fallen off his road bike, skidding on ice. This month’s column is Roger’s patient profile: Name: Roger Swan Condition: Fractured neck of femur right hip, January 2014. Fixed with a Dynamic Hip Screw. (An injury more commonly seen in the elderly!). How did you hear about ASK Physio? ASK Physio were recommended to me by a physiotherapist in Hitchin whom I had contacted, as she felt hydrotherapy would be a good place for me to start my rehabilitation. Tell us about your experience at ASK Physio: When I first saw Sarah, I had not been allowed to weight bear through my leg for six weeks, and had had minimal physiotherapy. Sarah agreed that hydrotherapy would be a good start when rehabilitating from a broken hip, as you can start walking in the water, and exercising using the resistance of the water. I was also given exercises to do at home to strengthen the muscles. One of the things I got out of our sessions was the mental aspect too. I hadn’t realised how fed up I was before I started physiotherapy. I was stuck on crutches and in pain. It was surprisingly helpful for me to be able to talk about my injury and progress to someone who understood what I was going through. The encouragement Sarah gave me to believe in my recovery was great and really helped. Just six months after his initial injury, and with the help of physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, Roger cycled up Alpe d’Huez (in the French Alps, on the Tour de France route). He also took part in the Prudential Ride London in August. I have been out cycling with Roger since his rehabilitation, and all I can say is, he obviously did well with his physiotherapy as I could barely keep up with him! * Members of local cycling clubs (Stevenage CTC, WRCC, SCC) receive 10% discount at ASK Physio. Next issue’s ‘The Body Matters’ will be written by Rachel Canning from PhysioLife.

Nurses on the run! It’s that time of year when we like to give a shout out to the determined and committed members of our community who take up the challenge of the London Marathon. This year we’d like to give a special mention to three of our local nurses, Jackie Downes, Ruth Reilly and Sarah Turner, who will be going the extra mile on Sunday 26 April when they take up their places to run for the charities ‘Children with Cancer UK’ and ‘Stevenage Community Trust’. The determined trio run with local clubs – Fairland Valley Spartans and Hitchin Running Club and have ‘clocked up a few 10k’s’ and run half marathons in the past, but this will be their first full marathon. Training started on the 1st September and the ladies have kept a blog detailing their runs and the additional fundraising efforts that have taken place. Ruth commented: “Training is going well, so far no major injuries! The biggest struggle has been fitting it in around work and our young families. It’s good to have company on the long runs and that’s where it’s been great to have friends and other club members to run with. I won’t lie - training during the cold and dark winter months has been hard, but we’re looking forward to spring now and some nicer weather conditions. We have a 20mile race booked on the 8th of March so that will be good preparation! ”

Finance:

Getting the most from your savings Unless you are over 65 and are able to tie up some of your savings for a year or three, interest rates are still abysmal. While most of us are getting bored talking about when interest rates will eventually rise, a lot of us are quite often caught out by not checking the rates of interest we are getting from our banks and building societies. Companies often offer savings with a higher interest rate to start with, reducing it after a fixed term, leaving you with a significantly lower rate. Having money saved up or easily accessible in case of emergencies is important. However, if you have more than three times your outgoings in accessible savings it may be time to look at alternative ways of using your ISA’s or savings in order to get the best from them. Are you are still paying a mortgage? Is your main priority getting it cleared as soon as possible? Have you looked at the option of mortgages with offset facilities? These use your savings balance to offset the amount of interest you pay on your mortgage, while still retaining access to the savings if you need them. If you are building up savings regularly or have lumps sums with a longer-term goal, have you considered Stocks and Shares ISA’s? With the help of a Financial Advisor you can establish the level of risk that you are comfortable with and get a plan in place that suits you and your goals. If your aim is to save for retirement, there are new flexibilities in pensions coming into effect in April this year. This has meant that pensions and retirement planning have moved up the agenda for most clients, and rightfully so. Receiving advice and making the time to go through a full review will help you to understand what you already have and how to really get the most from your money. To discuss your situation and to see if I can help please feel free to e mail me helena@sterlingandlaw.com or call me on 01462 420544.

News From The Thomas Alleyne Academy In this issue student and upcoming Head Boy, Graham Pickett, talks us through The Thomas Alleyne Academy’s recent visit from the Mayor of Stevenage. This column is kindly sponsored by Alta Image on Middle Row.

Our meeting with the Mayor of Stevenage I have had a very exciting couple of weeks in sixth form. I was delighted to be offered the position of head boy at the Thomas Alleyen Academy for the next academic year. I am currently shadowing the current head boy and learning about my duties. One of my responsibilities in representing the Academy is to bridge the gap between the younger years and sixth form. Student parliament is a very important part of my role and I am enjoying helping younger students raise issues to improve aspects of school life. Politics again was on the agenda on Monday 2nd February, when together with our senior students I met the Mayor of Stevenage. Madam Mayor gave us a great insight into her role and her passion to engage with the local community at all levels. She is currently visiting all schools in the Stevenage area to raise the profile of local affairs and how she engages with a huge range of community issues. We were made aware of the beneficiaries for 2014/2015. These include Home Start Stevenage, which supports around 60 families across the town. Stevenage World Forum, which gets involved greatly with social, cultural, economic, and educational events. It was interesting to hear about the Stevenage Furniture Recycling Scheme as we have developed a recycling scheme in the Academy successfully this year. The Scheme aims to help the most disadvantaged families, by providing realistically priced ‘handling charge’, when delivering furniture which was kindly donated by the public. As an academy we were able to discuss the possible projects that younger students were considering that would allow them to get involved with the community. We will be staying in communication with the Mayor and the Council and are planning a visit to her offices to learn about local politics in the spring term. As senior students it was a positive experience to meet a mayor who was so passionate about her work in the community. She ensured that she visited many students and staff during her morning with us and I am sure that everyone would like me to thank her on our behalf for visiting us and explaining her role. Our current head boy, Todd was quickly able to see the benefits to our community from meeting the lady Mayor and commented “if we continue to communicate between the council and school, the possibilities are endless”. Her visit gave me a great insight into local politics and the advantages of understanding local issues when helping younger students understand how they can play a more prominent role in the community. We are delighted to introduce a new regular column from The Barclay School. This issue student Sara Al Soodi talks us through their recent Careers Event.

Find Your Future - Careers Event

On the 4th February 2015, year 8 had the opportunity of meeting different people and talking to them about their jobs in The Barclay School "Find Your Future" careers event. There were twenty representatives of employers and colleges for us to interview. The point of this amazing experience was to help us understand what is awaiting us as well as to help us decide what our future career may look like. I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent talking to diverse professionals about their careers. I have observed the effort they put in their work, as well as their passion for it. Everyone interviewed nine workers each. I found these careers the most interesting for me; the Hertfordshire Constabulary, the NHS and the Imagination Technology. They were very different, but each had something unique. With each of these jobs you faced risks, but an exciting reaction is always to follow. However, the other job options were also fascinating; things such as Busy Bees, Fujitsu, Herts Fire and Rescue and Stevenage Borough Council were incredible jobs to get to know about, as well as many more.

Although this day included us meeting various workers, we also had the opportunity to talk to representatives from some universities and colleges. One of these was the University of Hertfordshire. I discovered interesting facts by talking to the person representing the university including information about what we need to do in order to get admitted and accepted for studying there. "Find Your Future" was an unforgettable experience. Not only have I learned new things, but I have seen the changes these jobs make to our society. I am glad I had the opportunity to have met these people. I am also happy and I appreciate that they gave up some of their precious time to come and talk to us, and give us an insight of how delightful each career can be, and what it can lead to. By Sara Al Soodi, year 8 student The event was organised by our Deputy Headteacher, Mr Noon and Youth Connexions Employment and Skills Coordinator (North Herts & Stevenage) - John McBride, in conjunction with our careers adviser David Mottershead from Connexions. Feedback from John McBride notes: “Your staff, especially Andrew and Maureen, did a great job in having everything set up for the employers and the students were very well prepared. I received many compliments from the employers about how well the students engaged with them and your students were a credit to your school. I am looking forward to the next careers event Youth Connexions will be supporting at your school.”

what’s on

A Pinch of Salt with that Egg? Someone told me that when once making soup for guests, she added a pinch of salt, tasted it, then added further pinches - repeatedly tasting and adding more. Eventually she stopped adding salt although it did not yet taste salty enough. She served the soup when the guests arrived. It was so salty that none of them could eat it! Adding salt in pinches made her taste-buds so accustomed to it that she didn’t realise she how much she was adding. For Christians Lent is a time before Easter when we try to root out the bad things we have become used to from our lives. We recognise that small things are important because repeated actions become habits and repeated habits form character. An African story points out that lion cubs are cute and cuddly, but small lions become big lions and big lions are dangerous. The things that destroy relationships with God and each other start small. We are preparing for Easter, when we celebrate our new life with Jesus. At the heart of ‘Sin’ is the letter ‘I’ (selfishness). Serving God and others is the opposite of this, so Jesus leads us from slavery to self to the freedom of loving service. Jesus dies and is raised that we may share His risen life. This gift of life costs Him everything, but is a free gift to us! We die to self and are raised to new life within Him and with others. A chat with... Kadoma Kidz Hi, we’d like to introduce ourselves – we are the Gibb family from Stevenage and in 2012 we decided to set up Kadoma Kidz. My husband Phil has been taking short-term missions to Kadoma, Zimbabwe for 19 years through the Stevenage Kadoma Link Association and through these experiences we were inspired to set up a separate organisation Kadoma Kidz. In September 2014 we packed up nine suitcases of supplies and headed for our first mission trip as a family and officially as ‘Kadoma Kidz’. We stayed in Kadoma for two weeks with a family, with no running water or electricity, we spent our time with the children, many of whom are orphans and other local families; we played, loved and had loads of fun! Never under estimate the power of play! Our current project is to change an old beer hall in Kadoma into a community centre. This will become the centre of the poorest area in Kadoma, a place for learning, support and encouragement, a place where organisations can come, to teach the children basic things, that we perhaps take for granted, such as teaching children sexual abuse is not right, empowering women, and offering a place of comfort for the elderly and a place giving hope to this community. Back here in the UK we do anything we can to fundraise - Santa visits, sky dives, cake sales, coffee mornings, fun-days – the list is growing! We have three trustees, myself – Stacy Gibb, my husband – Phil Gibb and Sami Ward who oversees what we do to make sure we are in line with the charity commission, we have recently applied to become a charity and are hoping to open a charity shop in Stevenage very soon. Exciting times are ahead for Kadoma Kidz! We have been given a fantastic opportunity to put on, alongside The Children’s Trust, A Stevenage has talent evening at the Holiday inn in Stevenage on the 18th April, We also ran a fun-day in February half term with Elsa & Anna, which was a huge success. We are asked quite often, what do you build? A school? A well? A church? The answer is simple we build children and young people! We are just an ordinary family who feel an extraordinary need to try and change the world, and for some children, just for a moment, we think we do. We don’t have members as such but everyone is welcome to support us financially, prayerfully or by attending our events or volunteering. To find out how you can get involved or to find out more about our events and what we do please visit us on facebook www.facebook. com/kadomakidz or contact kadomakidz@gmail.com

Twinklers Tues, Weds, Thurs 9.15-11.15am Bunyan Baptist Church, Basils Rd. There is a waiting list for places. Kirsty HomfrayCooper - 07719 599 109

MEET THE BUSINESS: Oscar Pet Food Tell us about OSCAR Pet Foods? OSCAR Pet Foods has been delivering superior pet products to homes throughout the UK since 1994. As the UK's largest pet food home delivery service, we are one of a national network of local Nutritional Advisors. Our wide choice of pet foods, including gluten-free, weight-control and grain-free options are backed by our Honest Label Policy and money-back guarantee. When was the business established? We bought our franchise covering the Stevenage area in July 2011, and have been gradually increasing in size ever since. We were already feeding our own dog Heno Oscars, so when the previous franchise owners decided to retire we saw a great opportunity to do something we already could see the benefits of and start to build our own business around our family life. What are the benefits of using Oscar? Oscar Pet Foods have always stood for a happier healthier longer life for your pets. We are extremely proud of the quality products we offer. Once you've started feeding OSCAR we'll make sure that you never need to think about pet food again. We'll keep in touch and deliver whatever you need to your door at your convenience.

Teaching your dog to be alone Dogs are naturally social, enjoying the company of other dogs and people. As a result, when you leave them, they may panic that they are alone, or they can simply get bored. Even if you are there all the time, teaching your dog to accept being alone is very useful. Put a baby gate across a doorway and leave your dog one side while you are the other. This way he can see you but can’t get to you. Give him his dinner / stuffed kongs / chew toys etc to keep him occupied. Leave him behind the baby gate for just 1 or 2 minutes. If he becomes restless or noisy, ignore him. Only let him out when he is quiet. Gradually (at a speed he is happy with) build up the time he is shut behind the gate. Once he is happy for a while behind the gate, progress on to shutting the door, starting again at just a few minutes. Gradually build up to leaving the room or even the house. If you have to leave your dog and he chews or messes, do not tell him off. Simply remove him from the area and clean up. If you tell him off, he becomes worried that you are going to get angry when you get home and this will encourage him to chew or mess to relieve his worry. Instead, go back a few training sessions and keep training! Most importantly, don’t forget that it’s never fair on your dog to leave them for more than 8 hours. Are you independent / franchise? We are a local business so are able to build a personal service to our customers and their pets to suit individual needs. We also have continuous support from our Head Office in Preston. Our customers can also contact the free Helpline service where our behaviourist and expert nutritionist can provide bespoke advice. What is unique / different about Oscars? For 20 years now, we have used only natural ingredients and human grade meat. We declare our main ingredients by name and percentage. We're proud of that fact. It allows you to see exactly what is in your dog and cat food. Most brands list ingredients by category (wheat, meat etc) but we believe that only a complete, specific list will do. Anything else we should know / may not already know ? We offer free nutritional advice to help you choose the correct diet for your pet, a pet weighing service and can Microchip your pet in the comfort of your own home. rachel.jacksons@oscars.co.uk 01438 359757 or 07711 162381 www.oscars.co.uk f: OscarMuchMoreThanPetFood t: oscarstwelpline
