The future is looking bright for the Robot Family!

Between 1974 and 1980, Stevenage Development Corporation employed Simon Jones as its town artist. Among his fun concrete sculptures in Symonds Green were the three members of the Robot Family, a Wonky Clock, and a set of Playing Cards designed with climbing in mind. All of these were originally brightly painted, but in the intervening years, they lost their colour and some of their features.

Fortunately, through the intermediary of a local website (www. ourstevenage.org.uk) Simon Jones was contacted. Now in semiretirement on the south coast, he was delighted to return to Stevenage to oversee the restoration of some of these sculptures.

Costs are being met through local Council Community Budgets, and some of the repainting is being done by Symonds Green Scouts over the summer holidays.

Look out for these fun figures being returned to their former glory!

Heritage Weekend: 10th & 11th Sept The former Bath House on Church Lane will be open once again for Heritage Weekend. The baths were first opened to the public over 100 years ago when few houses had indoor plumbing and hot running water. There were four cubicles within the building, each with a door for privacy. In addition to a cast-iron bath, there was also a slatted wooden duckboard on the floor for safety, a seat, coat hooks, a mirror and a small shelf. An attendant controlled the flow of hot water into the bath but customers were free to add cold! A bath cost 3d which included soap and you could also hire a towel for 1d.

The building was not always a Bath House, however. Originally built in 1834 to house the town’s horse-drawn fire engine, it was converted in 1913 when a new fire station was built. The Bath House eventually closed in the 1960s as the advent of indoor bathrooms had reduced its popularity. Still complete with fittings and open to visitors several times a year, it’s a fascinating piece of our history.

Opening times for Heritage Weekend are: Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th September from 11am to 3pm. The Bath House is on Church Lane, behind the Cromwell Hotel.

Event: Family History Day Following the success of last year’s event, Stevenage Museum will be once again holding a Family History Day on Saturday 24th September, when members of Stevenage Family History Society will be on hand to offer their expertise in all things genealogical!

As well as providing guidance on how to get started in family history research, the experts will be offering help for the more experienced researchers. There will also be a number of 'resource points' covering subjects such as researching Irish, Scottish and Welsh ancestors and access to some of the many on-line research resources available - to answer any specific questions that may arise! Join the Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning Macmillan Cancer Support will host their annual World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event on 30 September. Up and down the UK people will be hosting their own Coffee Mornings and donations on the day will be made to Macmillan. It's Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer and last year alone it raised £25 million, this year they're are aiming to raise even more!

Plenty of individuals and organisations in Stevenage will be supporting the cause, including Chrissy Cass who will be running her 7th 'all day' Coffee morning on Monday 23rd September, from 10-4pm at Christ The King Church, Filey Close, Stevenage, SG1 2JW. Entry will be £2.50 for as much tea, coffee and cake as you can eat!

Cake contributions will be very welcome, will those able to volunteer on the day please drop Chrissy a line on the below contact details if you think you can help.

A great end to the Summer term

Year 7 Visit to KidZania!

We are delighted to be welcoming our new year seven students to the Thomas Alleyne community as well as several new members of staff as we start this new academic year. While we are busy putting this year's calendar of activities and events into action, we'd like to mention a few achievements from the end of a busy Summer term.

At the end of the Summer term, our Year 7 students were fortunate enough to visit KidZania - the real life role-play experience for children in London. KidZania is a true-to-life 'Mini-City' built over a 75,000 sq.ft area. The concept of KidZania is to blend the learning of essential life skills with entertainment.

Students were given the freedom to roam around the pretend world armed with their 'KidZos' cash, which they could spend in the shops and then take on jobs to earn more money. There were over 60 real life role play activities to take on, these included working in a bank, on stage, and fighting crime on the streets as police officers.

Teachers and parents were asked to leave the children to their own devices and not step in to assist as they moved around the city, making decisions on what money to spend and what jobs to take on.

Each role-play experience is designed to teach children essential life skills, including financial literacy, teamwork and independence.

Student Rashida Rashid commented: “While some of us were working in the A&E department, a phone rang and we were called to an emergency. We got to go in an ambulance and made our way to the scene, where other children working for the fire service and police were also in attendance.”

Teacher, Mrs Bennett said: “From the outset, the children were made aware that the money was their responsibility and once it was spent, it was down to them to take on a job and earn more. They also had the option to take their cash to the bank and exchange it for a debit card; this was a great lesson for them as they then had to keep a tally in their heads of what they had spent and it taught them they are still spending actual money.”

Franklin House Annual Charity Day On Friday 17th June Franklin House held their annual charity day - a lunchtime filled with activities and stalls around the school, all run by students. Ice creams and lollies sold in their masses, students paid to see their teachers being ‘pied in the face,' while some got lucky in the raffle and penalty shoot-out!

The weather just about held up for the occasion and over £400 was raised for Franklin House's nominated charity. Well done to all involved.

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award In June, our Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award groups went out for their practice expedition.

Students planned routes to hike from Stevenage to Watton-atStone using their map reading and navigation skills.

After a day walking, the groups set up camp at the 1st Watton Scout group’s grounds; pitching tents and cooking an evening meal and playing campfire games, before an early start for the hike home in the morning!

Open Evening Preparations are already underway to welcome next year's Year 7's!

We will be holding the first of our Open Evening on Thursday 15th September, 6-9pm, when potential students and parents can visit the school and have a chat.

Transition is an important process for all students; it's an ongoing process - not something we leave to the end of the School year.

We believe constant communication and interaction with our Junior Schools is a crucial part of making the leap as seamless as possible for both students and parents. Throughout the School year, we run various activities both as official transition activities and through neighbourliness to our fellow Schools - the CRESTAward for Science is a great example of this. At the end of last term, we welcomed sixteen Year 5 pupils from Woolenwick Junior and St Nicholas School. The students did three FULL days of secondary style education, completing their BRONZE CREST Award. All the students were a credit to their school and thoroughly enjoyed their time here.

Each one stated how they were excited to move to secondary school and to be able to do more Science! Hopefully, they will be able to take these positive stories back to their classmates, and contribute to a smooth and reassuring transition to senior school later down the line.

Introducing young children to music Don’t you just love kids who love music?

The younger they are, it seems the funnier their dancing, singing and general enjoyment is, but their pure unadulterated joy of what is arguably the most important art form is a wonder to behold and their enthusiasm is often infectious!

And so I really do believe that I’ve got the best job in the world! I run live music classes for Babies and Toddlers called Mini Mozart, and no matter how I feel before I start a class, I always feel fantastic by the end, buoyed on by the little ones’ delight, interest and wonder of music.

All our practitioners are superb musicians; the class leader usually plays at least two orchestral instruments, which once they’ve heard what they sound like, the little ones are encouraged to touch and explore. All the classes have a piano accompanist who plays some of the world’s best-loved classical repertoire. And as often as possible visiting orchestral musicians drop in too!

Children benefit in many ways from attending classes. At this tender and formative age, we believe that music should be purely about expression and enjoyment, and we aim to instil in them confidence and enthusiasm about music and their response to it.

The course has been constructed to introduce children to the concepts of pitch, rhythm, dynamics and tempo through fun games and exercises - with the emphasis being placed firmly on the FUN! But it’s not just the children who have all the fun - watching their parents and carers singing along, refreshing their memories on hazy nursery rhyme words and tunes, shaking the parachute, catching the bubbles, and listening to a different story or fable each week, I know that they’re enjoying it as much as their little ones!

Bedwell Rangers Girls celebrate the success of their Football Festival On July 9th, Bedwell Rangers held a mini girls' football festival which was the culmination of their successful school's programme aimed at promoting football to girls in Stevenage Primary Schools.

During April and May, FA qualified coaches from Bedwell Rangers delivered the '3 Lions Programme' to 300 girls in Year 3 and 4 at Primary Schools across Stevenage. The Club was selected by Hertfordshire FA to run this on their behalf.

The aim of the sessions was to allow participants to play football in a fun, friendly and safe environment throughout the duration of the programme and then provide the opportunity for them to progress to playing regularly as part of an FA charter standard club.

The programme was a great success with several participants attending further free coaching sessions with the Club and go on to play in newly formed Under 9 and Under 10 teams in the Hertfordshire Girls Football Partnership League.

How do I book?

Parties feature games, craft activities, and birthday food. Party boxes contain a sandwich, crisps, cake, biscuits and a drink. You’re welcome to bring your own birthday cake with you.

Firstly please contact the Museum to check availability, we can then provisionally hold this date for you. A booking form will be sent out the same day by post or via email which ever you prefer and once we have received your completed booking form along with a deposit of £10 we will confirm your booking and send out your child’s party invitations. Your remaining balance along with any changes to the booking will be due one week before the party date.

Protect your property so that it is inherited by your loved ones!

Will trusts are mainly used by married couples and civil partners and are set up in conjunction with splitting ownership of the family home, to 'tenants in common', so each partner owns their own share (usually 50% each).

Rather than leaving this 50% share to each other, they leave it to a trust, which comes into effect on the death of the first partner. Often the couples’ children will be beneficiaries of the trust, so ultimately they will inherit the property when the second spouse passes away.

This type of trust means that the surviving spouse will only ever own 50% of the property.

Will trusts and long-term care If you use a will trust and your partner dies, you as the surviving spouse retain a right to live in the house. If you need care, only your share is assessed by the local authority.

The part owned by the trust is not counted. In this way, it is protected from care home costs. Government rules (Charging for Residential Accommodation Guide) suggest that this arrangement will not be contested as 'deliberate deprivation', meaning that you have deliberately split your assets to avoid paying high care home fees.

Will trusts and inheritance Another reason for setting up a will trust is to avoid 'sideways disinheritance'. This occurs when the first partner dies, leaving children from the marriage who might reasonably expect to inherit some of the family estate in due course.

If the surviving partner remarries and fails to make provision for their children in a new will, there's a risk that everything will go to their new spouse instead.

What happens whilst 50% of the property is in Trust?

Depending on the type of trust you choose and the terms you set, the survivor should be able to move or downsize (as long as trustees agree – the trustees can often be the surviving spouse plus children - who should be acting in the best interest of their surviving parent).

The survivor may also be able to spend any money that is freed up by downsizing. All in all, it is quite a flexible option to ensure that at least 50% of your home value at the date you die passes to the people you would actually want to inherit it.

HR: The Cost of Taking Client Records A recent statement from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) warns people to think before taking client records to a new company. The information also applies to employees who leave a job to start their own business.

ICO states that a former waste disposal employee who left his job, taking information about previous clients with him, has been prosecuted and fined.

Mark Lloyd, who worked at Acorn Waste Management Ltd in Shropshire, emailed the details of 957 clients to his personal email address as he was leaving to start a new role at a rival company. The documents contained personal information including the contact details and purchase history of customers and commercially sensitive information.

Appearing at Telford Magistrates’ Court, Mr. Lloyd pleaded guilty to unlawfully obtaining data and was prosecuted under section 55 of the Data Protection Act. He was fined £300, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30 and £405.98 costs.

Steve Eckersley, head of enforcement at the ICO said: “Taking client records that contain personal information to a new job, without permission, is a criminal offence.

Employees need to be aware that documents containing personal data they have produced or worked on belong to their employer and are not theirs to take with them when they leave. Don’t risk a day in court by being ignorant of the law.”

The ICO explains that unlawfully obtaining or accessing personal data is a criminal offence under section 55 of the Data Protection Act 1998.

The offence is punishable by way of ‘fine only’ in a Magistrates Court or a Crown Court. The ICO continues to call for more effective deterrent sentences, including the threat of prison, to be available to the courts to stop the unlawful use of personal information.

Some employees believe they have the right to take key information from their employer and use it to start their own business. This case highlights to businesses what action they can take should this happen.

It is one of the reasons why we include a restrictive covenant in employees’ contracts if their position or job role involves accessing key customer or business information.

The Body Matters Sleeping

This month we are going to be talking about sleep. I’m a firm believer in the importance of good quality sleep, at all ages. My poor children have strict bedtimes and still get a good 10 hours sleep every night, even at the ages of eight and ten years old. If I’m feeling under the weather, I make myself go to bed early for a few nights (harder than it sounds!) and can usually nip most things in the bud this way.

Children can require therapy too!

A child’s life, which is full of discovery and learning can also be very stressful for them.

Sometimes us adults, busy juggling life and holding everything together, don't always see the issues affecting the emotional and psychological balance of our children until the stress becomes really noticeable, and maybe the child withdraws or displays disruptive behaviour.

Hypnotherapy can really help children in this situation. It can be used to help with many issues including anxiety, depression, confidence, food, sleep, bedwetting, relationships with siblings and other children, phobias, parents separating and grief.

Using visualisation and other imaginative techniques, it can help children and their families re-establish balance and harmony, and it’s fun, fast and appealing to children because it uses their imagination!

Treatment might include using stories, adventures, involving a pet or favourite character from a book and sometimes if the therapist feels it would be beneficial, they will involve the parent(s) too.

The therapist is also often able to introduce positive affirmations to the child, such as; feeling happy, feeling confident, liking themselves better, remembering more easily or reading faster. Children are very suggestible and respond well to this.

As with adults, for therapy to be successful there must be a commitment, that is, the child must want to change the problem behaviour or issue they are experiencing.

Children have to deal with a lot of change in a short period - their own bodily changes as they move through rapid growth spurts, overcoming tasks like making new friends, dealing with bullies, challenging school work, and generally trying to fit in and be ‘good enough’. Sometimes the comparison to others can result in feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, low self-esteem and even depression. And just like adults, children show their reaction to difficult situations in different ways. They may start to struggle at school and fall behind, become forgetful, distracted, angry, irritable and even violent. They might become accident-prone, have headaches or an upset stomach.

Fears like being scared of the dark, going to sleep, of animals or insects, travelling, people may start to be evident.

Parents can reassure and provide a safe, consistent environment, but sometimes external help is required.

Here’s a quote from one parent whose son of primary school age, came for several sessions because he was disruptive, angry and suffering with anxiety.

“He's been so much happier of late, he and his brother have been getting on so well.

He even read his brother a bedtime story last night - he has never done that before!

He is more confident, and spreading his wings a little - happy to do things on his own, which is great if we're out and he needs the toilet.” (name withheld)

Plans to build on Forster Country Our main focus this year has been the task of reviewing and responding to the local authority plans for 1800 homes to be built on Forster Country land. Apart from a small strip of land, there will be housing from St Nicholas Church to within a couple of hundred yards of Graveley on what is currently Green Belt land. To build on this, the Council will have to establish an 'Objectively Assessed Need' and we are challenging that assessment. The cross hatching on the map below shows the areas designated for housing.

In January, the FoFC Committee drew up and sent in 38 individual representation forms each covering a different aspect of the Plan.

In particular, the attack on our Green Belt was criticised. Our understanding is that all of these representations will be available in the public domain via the SBC website in due course. We would like to thank all those, who put in objections to the Plan.

We are consulting further with residents and preparing additional documents with a view to presenting these to the Government Inspector later in the year.

FoFC believes it is important that we recognise the need for homes, but we continue to defend Forster Country, which is the last decent sized piece of open countryside within the Stevenage boundary.

Stevenage is already densely populated, and residents both need and deserve such vital open spaces. Forster Country is also famous throughout the world for its connections with the novelist E.M. Forster and to take this historical attraction away from the town would be a huge disservice.

We'd urge residents to visit our website to learn more and support this cause.

Olympic gold medallists make things look so easy and are a real pleasure to watch as they turn their sport into an art form.

As I think of the heights to which the British Olympic team has risen this summer, I have been wondering what makes it all so special?

Now that many of the world’s best Olympic athletes are professional, they perform to new standards and with astonishing grace. They can create deeply united teams because of the amount of time they can give to their sport and to building team spirit.

It is not that only, though, there remains space for the weaker athletes to excel and to be noticed… The ‘Eddie The Eagle’s, the Jamaican Bobsled team and the man, who you may recall, swam for his country a few years ago and barely finished the race, are all as important to the whole Olympic event as the professionals and the winners of medals - they are essential parts of the team.

Laurence whose festival Christians celebrated in August, was instructed by the Romans to bring the treasures of the church to them.

In response, he presented the poor, elderly and marginalised and said ‘These are the treasures of the Church’.

Saint Paul said that even the weakest parts of the body have a function. We in society and particularly in the Church should remember our need for the weakest in our midst; they teach us at the very least to exercise care and compassion and when we listen to them often, they teach us so much more.
