Thankful for another year of polled progress

Another fun year welcoming many Polled calves into the herd and 2018 looks to be no different. With our recent FARM inspection and a big thumbs up from our evaluator about our farm and Polled breeding is just another sign we are heading in the right direction. The future looks bright and hornless! Meet Dedication-M Beiber Tremble-P! Her dam is a fresh 2-yr-old Super. Next dam by Atwood just went EX-90! She's due 3/18 to Apache P. Next dam is a VG Lheros. We are liking the looks of her and are excited about more Beiber PP calves to come!

He's Polled & He's Available! Zayne-P (right) is a son of Revival PP and from over 50 years of homebred dams including VG-86 x VG-86 x EX-91-2E x VG-86. He has a balanced genomic profile and we used him heavily on our Goldwyn blood in the heifer pens to take advantage of his strength and health traits as well as that Polled advantage!

Our Outline P daughters impress us more every day! Welded on udders, excellent mobility and moderate frames make them the perfect parlor/freestall cows. We're happy with how they are calving in and are making some good records!

#PolledPanel

Breeder Perspectives on POLLED This magazine was developed for those passionate about Polled! In the #PolledPanel feature of #PolledPlace, breeders have the opportunity to share their perspective on Polled. Thank you to Katie Agnew for sharing your Polled story and views on the future of Polled Milking Shorthorns! POLLED MILKING SHORTHORNS Mapleton Valley Farms Katie Agnew Oconomowoc, Wisconsin Farm Background Mapleton Valley Farms, LLC is a century farm located in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. It is owned and operated by Pat and Phyllis Agnew, their children Katie and Tom (wife Keely) and Tom and Keely’s children, Bryn and Blake. We have 120 head of registered Holsteins, Milking Shorthorns and Ayrshires. We also run about 400 acres of corn, wheat, soybeans and alfalfa. How long have you been breeding for Polled and what inspired you to start? Our first polled animal was born in 2002. Her polled sire was an interesting outcross to what we had in our barn. Since then, we have slowly been building up our polled Milking Shorthorn population, especially recently since we have been getting several phone calls looking for polled bulls for sale. More breeders are finding value in not having to dehorn their calves while not losing production and type in the process. What is your breeding philosophy for Polled? At the beginning, it was to see if we could expand our polled herd. Now, as there is more interest in polled genetics, we are breeding it into some of our most influential cow families. Right now, there is not a huge variety of polled bulls available, so we are trying to improve on the selection. Who was your first Polled cow? Our first polled cow was Mapleton Vly MM Albany-P, a VG86 Meriville Milk More-P daughter. She traces back to Weg Acres Artemis, a cow my grandparents Willard and Sylvia Gerner bred who was the first Milking Shorthorn to be flushed in the United States. Albany-P had a top record at 4-8 and 328days of 22,674 pounds of milk with a 3.8%fat test. She is also the dam of Mapleton Vly T Adele P EX90, the 2009 All-American Spring Calf, who is the dam of two available polled bulls in the #PolledPlacings listing.

What cow families are you breeding Polled into? What do you have for Polled animals? We have started breeding polled into our top cow families. Right now, we have a homozygous polled Oceanbrae Ironman-P yearling daughter out of Adele P. We also have a flashy polled Rovin Ali Othello Aladdan-P summer yearling for next year who is a granddaughter of 3E91 3-time All-American Lands-Brook MVF L Cassidy-ET. Our first Circle B Lucky Strike-PP calves are starting to hit the ground, out of 3E90 Mapleton Vly Julius Foxy with lactations over 30,000 milk and VG88 Mapleton Vly Cancun Zunique, Reserve All-American Jr. 2 Year Old. Pictures of these family members are in our ad on the next page. What Polled bulls are represented in your herd? We currently have Rovin Ali Othello Aladdan-P and Circle B Lucky Strike-PP cows and calves on the ground. What Polled bulls are you currently using? Besides Aladdan-P and Lucky Strike-PP, we are also starting to use Mapleton Vly Spark Atlas-P. What are your thoughts on the availability of Polled bulls? There has definitely been an increase in the polled bulls available, but I am still interested in what else we can get mating-wise. Eventually, it would be great to have more homozygous polled bulls in the breed, but we need to keep type and production as much of a focus as the polled gene. In the past (and maybe still), people shied away from using polled because those bulls didn’t have a lot of milk behind them or lacked type in the pedigree. As a farm, we are trying to make type and production equally as important as the polled gene. In the Milking Shorthorn breed, very few studs are picking up bulls, focusing more on Holsteins and Jerseys. The awareness and availability of polled Milking Shorthorn bulls is primarily through word-of-mouth and social media. What would you like to see available in the future? Definitely more variety of pedigrees, while keeping type and production. As a breed, we also need to keep current with a listing of bulls available (both in studs and privately), much like the #PolledPlace’s directory listing. Where do you see the future of Polled in your breed? I think it is definitely going to grow. Not only are Milking Shorthorns known for their longevity, calving ease and resistance to disease and infection, bringing polled into the mix is even more marketable for any type of operation.

For many dairy breeders, the highlight of the year is World Dairy Expo. Dairy enthusiasts come together from all over the world for five short days that go by all too quickly. Five days that are filled with anticipation, excitement, hard work and of course, making new friends and connecting with old friends. The interest in Polled genetics continues to grow each and every year, both in the show ring and in the trade show. #Polled- Greenlea Ad Annie P-Red-ET Junior Champion Place shared a booth with DairyBullsOnline World Dairy Expo 2017 this year and distributed copies of the magazine along with copies of the #PolledPromoters Directory. Once again, the #PolledPromoters Social was held in conjunction with World Dairy Expo. Thank you to the breeders that attended, supported and stopped by the booth! It is always exciting to hear about what is new with your Polled breeding and the future plans you have for Polled in your herd. A special highlight for Polled this year was that the Junior Champion of the International Red & White Show at World Dairy Corstar Presto Mango P-EXP Expo was POLLED! Following in her mother's footsteps, Corstar Presto Mango P-EXP was the 1st place Jr. 2-Year-Old in the International Milking Shorthorn Show this year at World Dairy Expo. Her dam, Corstar Deuce Mix P-EXP-TW EX-90 EX-91-MS, won the Jr. 3-Year-Old class at World Dairy Expo in 2016 and was featured in the Nov/Dec 2016 #PolledPlace. Mango P was also named Honorable Mention Intermediate Champion! Bred and owned by Corstar Farm, Cory & Kristen Salzl of Minnesota, Mango P is a Presto daughter that traces back to 5x Nominated All-American Horizon-Tudor Margarita-EXP-ET EX-95-4E. What will World Dairy Expo 2018 bring? We're hoping for more Polled class winners and Polled champions!

A Focus on International Polled Jonathan Kelso - JK Genetics

I farm along with my Dad, Bertie and brother, Andrew in Co. Tyrone, N. Ireland, pretty much in the center, being 1 hour from Belfast. We milk approximately 210 cows with 220 female youngstock and 40 breeding bulls. In addition a few years ago I founded JK Genetics to market embryos mainly within Great Britain and Ireland, but in the past year marketed to seven countries. I also work two days a week scoring cows for AI

Services mating program. I initially began breeding polled in 2009, but was a bit disillusioned with the level of genetic merit within polled bloodlines and limited choices in a pre-genomic era. In the past number of years, my polled breeding program has been kick started again mainly due to the recent steep gain of genetic improvement mainly due to being in a genomic era. My philosophy is to only breed polled into the top cows in my herd for a generation and then breed those polled offspring to the best bulls I can find-polled or non polled. Polled embryo purchases are done the other way-buy embryos from the best polled animals available sired by the best bulls-usually non polled. My first polled cows were 2 Lawn Boy P sisters from Bons Holsteins Aaltje which were sold through our milking portion dispersal in 2012 before they could really make much contribution to the herd. I am currently endeavoring to make one cross of polled from all my top ranking cow families: Baler Twine, Cosmopolitan and Coyne Farms Yelena. In fact our best polled animal at present is the former #1 PLI polled female in the UK, an RC Label P daughter tracing back to Larcrest Cosmopolitan through an EX Snowman and Planet. Leagh Label Crimson P GP84-2yr has also bred the #1 and #2 genomic females in UK by quite some way, both sired by Modesty in the Beechview and Carnhill herds respectively. We are working with RC polled daughters by Integral, Modesty and Avenger P with numerous pregnancies on the way by Lucky PP Red and Agronaut. At present we have polled females in the herd by Label P, Amax, Integral and Modesty. Currently I am using Zimmerview Lucky PP Red, Wilder Born P, Avenger P and will be using as many of the top ranking sires as possible, provided they have good components, daughter fertility, strength and good feet and legs. The availability of Polled has changed. In the past, availability of top polled sires was poor, but this has improved significantly. I think it is up to us, the polled breeders, to strive to use them wisely in conjunction with the top non-polled bulls in order to bring the polled breed forward at as fast a pace as possible . In the future, I would like to see a top five net merit sires come available, in time no doubt it will happen. I think the future of the polled Holstein breed is exciting. There are currently a number of high genomic level heterozygous females and young males not so far away from the top non-polled animals. Maybe in five or six years there can be enough top PP males in the top rankings as to allow commercial dairy men the world over to commit themselves to making dehorning a thing of the past.

Polled Testing There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf POLLED. Polled New Year As 2017 comes to a close and we now are on the last month of the calendar, it's hard to believe that a new year is right around the corner! What #PolledProgress did you make in 2017? Have you increased the percentage of Polled animals in your herd? Are there more Homozygous Polled animals than last year? What percentage of your matings are Polled or have the potential for Homozygous Polled? What are your future plans for breeding Polled? All great questions and intriguing to see what the future of Polled is on each of your farms. 2017 began with the highest Polled Holstein heifer at +2697 GTPI and the highest Homozygous Polled Holstein heifer at +2579. As of August, the highest Polled Holstein heifer is +2860 GTPI and the highest Homozygous Polled Holstein heifer is +2635 GTPI. What will new proofs bring? THANK YOU #PolledPromoters! Thank you to the #PolledPromoters that promoted their genetics in the #PolledPlace and #PolledPromoters Directory publications this year! Special thank you to those that were contract advertisers in 2017 - Ag-Link Genetics, Ardachie Jerseys, Country Dairy, Dreamstone Dairy, Lemajru Dairy, Rollen N's Dairy, Schoene Kuh Dairy, Select Sires and Taughboyne Jerseys!
