time that ranked high on the PPR list. We really liked the pedigree, especially with the Goldwyn influence, combined with the Polled trait which is what made us choose him and use him in our herd right away. There were not a lot of Polled options in the Milking Shorthorn breed at the time and we focus on type when breeding cows, so using Deuce P allowed us to add the Polled influence without sacrificing type. Congratulations to Corstar on their success with Mix P! We're excited to see the outcross Polled Milking Shorthorn genetics you will develop from this cow family. If you are planning on attending the #PolledPlace & Bouquet of Breeds II Tag Sale in May, Corstar is just a few miles away.

Corstar Deuce Mix P-EXP-TW EX-90 EX-91-MS (max score) 2-03 2x 301d 14,545m 3.5% 509f 3.0% 442p As World Dairy Expo celebrated their 50th anniversary last month, Corstar Farm won the Junior 3-year-old class in the International Milking Shorthorn Show with Corstar Deuce Mix P-EXP-TW and bonus...she's POLLED! To continue their excitement with Mix P, this month she classified EX-90 (max score) with an EX-91-MS. Mix P is owned by Cory and Kristen Salzl of Litchfield, Minnesota and is featured on the cover of this issue of #PolledPlace. 2016 was a great year in the show ring for Mix P! She was named Intermediate Champion, Reserve Grand Champion and Best Udder of the Show after being selected as the 1st place Junior 3-year-old at the Minnesota State Fair. Along with her 1st place award at the International Milking Shorthorn Show at World Dairy Expo, Mix P also received Best Udder and 1st place Bred & Owned in her class and was 1st in the World Dairy Expo Futurity. Keeping the Polled in this family going, Mix P's first natural calf is an extremely fancy Polled heifer by North Stars Presto ET EXP. "We plan to do flush or IVF work on her in the future. We will probably use horned bulls to hopefully make Polled offspring that are not related to the other Polled Milking Shorthorn bulls," shares Cory Salzl. Mix P, sired by GE Gold Mine Dimond Deuce P, is a grand-daughter of Corstar's first Milking Shorthorn, North Stars Mandy-ET, purchased on the City Slickers Fall for Colors Sale in 2006, and her dam, Corstar KM Mudpie was his first homebred Milking Shorthorn. Mix P had a Polled twin sister that was sold on the first American Milking Shorthorn Society (AMSS) Online Sale in 2014. A story from Cory Salzl on the mating of Mix P Deuce was a new young sire from Gold Mine Milking Shorthorns when we first used him. He is a son of the Holstein sire, West Port Arron Doon Mitey P, and his dam was a show-winning EX-91 Othello. He also had a maternal brother, Dynamite, at the

#PolledPanel

Breeder Perspectives on POLLED This magazine was developed for those passionate about Polled! In the #PolledPanel feature of #PolledPlace, breeders have the opportunity to share their perspective on Polled. Thank you to these breeders for sharing their Polled story and views on the future of Polled in their respective breeds! POLLED BROWN SWISS Matthew Wundrow Poplar Grove, Illinois Farm Background I help my parents (Les and LaVonne Wundrow) operate Wundrow's Brown Swiss Farm in Poplar Grove, Illinois, which is only minutes away from the Wisconsin border. We are located on 126 acres of the finest cropland in the Midwest and we milk 25-30 Purebred Registered Brown Swiss in a stanchion barn. My family has been involved with Brown Swiss cattle for several generations starting with my Great-Grandpa Charles Wundrow who, in 1914, was one of the first Brown Swiss breeders in Wisconsin, to my father Les who was President of the Illinois Brown Swiss Association for several years. How long have you been breeding for Polled and what inspired you to start? I'm very new in the Polled breeding world. I started breeding Polled in 2015 and was inspired by Stephanie Hammerly's passion for Polled. What is your breeding philosophy for Polled? My philosophy for Polled is to gradually get the dominant Polled gene into all family lines in our herd. Who was your first Polled animal? Right now I'm working on my Joyce cow family. What Polled bulls are represented in your herd and which bulls are you currently using? Currently we have two heifers from Jeff PP. We are using Jeff PP and Carr P. What are your thoughts on the availability of Polled bulls? The availability of Polled Swiss is currently limited, however I think that is changing! In the future of Polled in the Brown Swiss breed, I would like to see more Polled bulls to choose from, higher production, better build, better components and Polled sexed semen. Where do you see the future of Polled? I think Polled has a good future in the Brown Swiss breed. I believe that down the road we will all have to have Polled due to overbearing regulations brought upon us by those in government positions with limited agriculture knowledge. We need to stay ahead of the curve by growing our Polled genetics! Additional comments. I want to thank Stephanie Hammerly for all of her hard work, perseverance and vision to promote and connect the Polled World!

POLLED HOLSTEINS Adam Faust Chilton, Wisconsin Farm Background I run a 70 cow dairy that I took over from my parents. They started from scratch and farmed with grade cattle for 35 years. I took an interest in genetics at 14 years old when I met Bill Hageman. Over the years, I was able to acquire several registered cows that serve as the foundation of my herd today. I milk in a recently remodeled tie stall barn with deep beds. I have a carrier rail and Delpro herd management system for milking. We raise all of our own heifers and crop 500 acres. How long have you been breeding for Polled and what inspired you to start? I have been dabbling in Polled for about 3 years and have got serious about breeding a complete Polled herd about a year ago. What is your breeding philosophy for Polled? My breeding philosophy is quite simple. I use aAa and use bulls that I think make sense based on their pedigree. I like big cows that are capable of converting large volumes of forages into milk. I am not a fan of genomics and don't ever make breeding decisions solely with one number. Who was your first Polled animal and what cow families are you currently working with? My first Polled calves are from the Elsie family from Evergreen View. I currently have several pregnancies from daughters and grand-daughters of Evergreen View My 1326. I recently purchased the dam of Piranha P - Buck-HCreek Poppy P-Red-ET EX-90, who is a 10th generation VGEX. What Polled bulls are represented in your herd? I have quite a few heifers out of Ladd P and Piranha P. What Polled bulls are you currently using? Currently I am using Ball of Wax PP, Dr Pepper P, History PP, Miller P and Rex P. What are your thoughts on the availability of Polled bulls? I think the availability of Polled genetics is getting better as more Polled gets bred into more great families. Where do you see the future of Polled? I think Polled is the future and we are on the verge of seeing the tide turn to the point that horned genetics will be obscure.

Total Livestock Genetics & Coomboona Holsteins - Australia

Total Livestock Genetics EU Facility At the forefront of animal genetics and reproduction technology, Total Livestock Genetics is committed to providing a link between evolving technologies and the commercial needs of producers, whilst maintaining optimum customer service. Total Livestock Genetics (TLG) was formed in 1989 by Shane and Erin Ashworth in response to the need for an independent and professional semen and embryo collection service. Since that time, TLG has expanded its range of complementary services and now includes storage and dispatch, import and export of genetic material, live animal export, as well as a complete suite of reproductive services for equine and ovine clients. In 2015, TLG launched its first commercial bull team and in the preceding 12 months has assembled a team of the highest genomic sires available in Australia. This process has been assisted by working with elite Australian breeders such as Coomboona Holsteins. Alex Arena founded Coomboona over 25 years ago and his family has been farming in the Goulburn Valley irrigation district of Northern Victoria for over 50 years. Progressively Alex kept expanding Coomboona by buying adjacent properties and it now embraces over 1,800 hectares of

highly productive irrigated farmland with the major forage crops being maize and lucerne with double-cropping of cereals and legumes. The dairy herd is 100% Holstein and is totally housed in a combination of rubber matted freestalls and compost barns. The herd is 100% TMR-fed. Currently Coomboona milks 2,000 cows twice a day in a 50 stall rotary and will shortly start milking three times a day in a modern 80 stall rotary. Coomboona is developing a second dairy on the same property and this will milk an additional 4,000 cows - thus the aim is to milk a total of 6,000 cows and achieve a rolling herd average of over 40litres/day and over 80 million liters of milk a year. Once completed in about 2 year's time this would make Coomboona one of the largest, if not the largest, dairy in Australia. To breed the required dairy cows for a totally housed, totally TMR-fed system Alex Arena started importing embryos over 10 years ago. That program expanded rapidly and the companion business (Coomboona Genetics) was born. Coomboona Genetics has acquired embryos from many of the leading cow families overseas (particularly from North America) and as a result it has established the widest and deepest pool of Holstein genetics in Australia. All progeny from the imported embryo program and most of the progeny from natural reproduction at Coomboona are genomically tested - the highest ranked females are used to build the herd index by becoming embryo donors while the highest males are used in joint venture with TLG for semen collection or are sold to AI Studs in Australia or overseas. Coomboona Genetics implants between 1,200 to 1,500 embryos each year. With a program of this size, Coomboona can afford to be very broad in its breeding objectives and patient over several generations of breed development. Coomboona recognizes that dehorning is one job that dairy-farmers wished they never had to do, and, indeed, community attitudes in future may dictate that dehorning should not be done in many markets. However, while there is a significant

Why Fit in When You Were Born to Stand Out? POLLED GENETICS UNLOCK YOUR POTENTIAL FOR A BETTER FUTURE!

Taughboyne Jerseys Victoria, Australia taughboyne@bigpond.com

5 of our 10 entries in the recent On Farm Challenge competition finished in the top 5 places and 4 out of the 5 were POLLED! Sired by Eclipes-P, Imagination-P, Pro-P, AussieGold(P) and Milad P. Every year, getting better and better!

continued from page 12 gap in index between non-Polled and Polled genetics, it is natural that dairy-farmers would choose the higher indexed non-Polled animals. As this gap closes and as community pressure rises then the choice for Polled becomes obvious and potentially preferred. Coomboona believes that the gap can close hence about 25% of Coomboona's breeding program has shifted to Polled. Bouyancy P is one of the earliest outcomes of this breeding program. He is competitive in virtually all traits and he is both Polled and red carrier. He is a great stepping stone with which to propel Polled breeding forward to continue to close the gap to the non-Polled index leaders. Coomboona Supershot Bouyancy P-RC is an exceptionally well balanced young sire with a combination of high health traits, components and functionality. Further to his all around appeal, Bouyancy P indexes well on GTPI, ABV and RZG showing that he is capable in many different Oconnors Earnhardt Beyonce PP-RC Dam of Bouyancy P-RC

markets. We believe bulls like Bouyancy P can help bridge the gap between horned and Polled genetics. Coomboona's and Total Livestock Genetics future goal is to have globally competitive high-index males and females so that Australia can be a reliable supplier of Holstein genetics to various markets in Asia, particularly those markets that are usually closed to imported genetics due to health and quarantine issues, but are open to Australian product due to Australia's superior health status. Polled genetics will continue to grow their share of the market. Once the gap to non-Polled genetics closes, the Polled share of the market will rise and if breeders can accelerate the closing of the gap, then Polled should become preferred and eventually have the dominant market share. Coomboona's breeding program isn't unique, but it has two important features in the context of Australian breeding programs - 1) scale (because it works with hundreds of donors and over a thousand embryos a year) and 2) it works with both the highest indexed males as well as females that come through the program. As a result, Coomboona has more scope to experiment and to try various combinations and to focus on certain breed traits that smaller programs cannot afford to do.

#PolledPromoters Walter & Doug Schultz

There are many great #PolledPromoters today, but there weren’t as many out there in the 1940’s. Walter Schultz of Nicollet, Minnesota was the true definition of a #PolledPromoter! He shared his passion for Polled with everyone including his son, Doug who still lives on the home farm. Although there are not Polled animals at the farm today, the presence of Polled lives on in the many scrapbooks and posters that have promoted Polled over the years. “A picture is worth a thousand words,” so I would like to share Walter & Doug Schultz’s Polled promotion story with you by using their photos, speeches and articles.

Walter Schultz was the President and Founder of the National Polled Cattle Promotion Club. He said his main goal in life is to “promote breeding the horns off the largest strain of cattle in the world, and that’s Holsteins.” His inspiration in breeding Polled cattle came in 1926 from a horned heifer that he was getting ready for the 4-H show at state fair. The horned heifer tossed her head and caught Walter above the eye and knocked him out. He then vowed that when he had his own farm, he would have cattle with no horns. Pictured here is the National Polled Cattle Promotion Club display and Walter with his herd of Polled cows.

Polled Testing

There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pc/Pc POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/Pf POLLED. One copy of Polled-Celtic and 1 copy of Polled-Friesian molecular markers are present. All offspring will be polled.
