Polled Reflections from the "Pier"

Chapter 7 - The Struggle is Real!

Dehorning day is never fun, but it becomes a whole lot more of a "struggle" when you start having calves born without horns - so much more "equipment" needed! Instead of just getting the dehorner out and going to work, you now have to gather up the rods, two coolers (one for drinks & one for the fish), tackle box, sunscreen, lawn chairs and bait. Then comes the long hard trip to the fishing hole! You finally get all the "equipment" set up on the pier and your lines in the water and as you sit there reflecting on your rough day of "dehorning," your attention goes to your portable radio where Brad Paisley is singing, "Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite!" Yep the struggle is real for the POLLED breeder on dehorning day! Donald & Joan Yoder & Family

#PolledPanel

Breeder Perspectives on POLLED This magazine was developed for those passionate about Polled! In the #PolledPanel feature of #PolledPlace, breeders have the opportunity to share their perspective on Polled. Thank you to these breeders for sharing their Polled story and views on the future of Polled in their respective breeds! POLLED MILKING SHORTHORNS Weissway Farms Casey Weiss Arcanum, Ohio Farm Background Our farm, Weissway Farms, is a registered Milking Shorthorn herd that began when Krista and I were married in 2001. I grew up on a dairy farm in Union City, Indiana and graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Animal Science and Krista grew up showing Simmental beef cattle and club lamb show sheep on their family farm in Versailles, Ohio. Krista graduated from Wright State University and is a 2nd grade teacher for Greenville City Schools. At the time of our marriage, we purchased my maternal grandparents farm in rural Arcanum, Ohio and from that small start we have grown to our current 60 head of cattle and 5 children. Our children, Alex, Maggie, Katie, Charlie and Henry take an active part in the daily operation of the farm along with being active in school, sports and church activities. Selling breeding stock and semen is the primary goal of our operation. In any given year, roughly 50% of our females and 25% of our bulls are merchandised to other breeders. We also collect and distribute semen on Milking Shorthorn bulls. We offer a wide selection of semen from purchased bulls and our homegrown bulls from our best cows. This would include both Polled and horned bulls. How long have you been breeding for Polled and what inspired you to start? I have been breeding for Polled for the last 10 years. I was inspired to start by the late Lynn Augsperger and the Polled Dairy Cow forum on Yahoo groups. Lynn was very inspiring and he had a vision of Polled popularity in all dairy breeds and put his plan into action by securing Polled animals and tracking down Polled semen in each breed. Another driving force was the fact that we did not like dehorning calves. I really don't like smelling like burnt hair all day. What is your breeding philosophy for Polled? My current philosophy is to make a Polled mating whenever it makes sense. Most of my calves this next year could be Polled which is very exciting for me. We are also making a lot of Polled x Polled matings in an effort to create Homozygous Polled offspring.

8 #PolledPlace

Who was your first Polled animal? We have not focused on a single cow family as we are trying to introduce Polled into all of our cow families. In the near future we hope to have Polled offspring from the MiSan Acres Lola, Buckeye Knoll Pila, Hauxwell Bessie Jo 34th, Honey Creek Allie Mae and the Hard Core Roxy cow families. What Polled bulls are represented in your herd? We currently have Polled offspring of Rovin Mega All Abner-P, Rovin-Ecua Ala Pref Prince-P, Ecuafarm Stetson Shazam EXP P and Rovin Othello Ali Aladdan-P. Our current Polled herdbulls are sired by Abner-P and B-D-F Diamond Sparkler. What Polled bulls are you currently using? We currently have calves on the way from Oceanbrae Ironman-P, Aladdan-P, Meriville King Oscar-P, Weissway Abner Likewise-P and Mapleton Vly Spark Atlas-P. Atlas-P is our current herdsire and most recent AI sire. He is proving to be a popular outcross sire. What are your thoughts on the availability of Polled bulls? The availability is much better than it was 10 years ago, but we still have a long way to go. Most of the Polled Milking Shorthorn lines have descended from either Rovin Alise Clay Allie-P or Gold Mine Ebrose Stetson 868-P. Outcross lines of Polled are still in demand and needed! What would you like to see available in the future? In the future, I would like to see more Homozygous Polled bulls available that can work in the showring and parlor. Once some of the best show cows are Polled, then it will be easier for Polled to become mainstream in all facets of the industry. Where do you see the future of Polled? Milking Shorthorns have always had a higher percentage of Polled animals as compared to the other breeds so our breeders are open to using Polled bulls. Polled bulls in the past like P-Meadowbrook Chieftain 9th, P-Frekeba Figaro, P-Gold Mine 778 and his son Gold Mine Ebrose Stetson 868-P have been top proven bulls in their day. With this proof that Polled animals perform well, it will be easier to increase the percentage of Polled Milking Shorthorns. I also see Polled Milking Shorthorn bulls becoming more popular in crossbreeding. Polled is another convenience trait that Milking Shorthorn bulls can offer along with fertility, locomotion, hardiness and strength. Breeding for Polled is very exciting and challenging at the same time. Nothing is more rewarding than a Polled heifer or as frustrating as a horned bull calf from a Polled x Polled mating. My opinion is that Polled is here to stay and at some point in the future it will be mandated. I am happy that I can play a small part in breeding better Polled cattle.

POLLED HOLSTEINS, JERSEYS & BROWN SWISS HY-GRO Farms Cole Hoyer West Salem, Wisconsin Farm Background My name is Cole Hoyer, I am a part of HY-GRO Farms that is located in West Salem, Wisconsin operated by the Hoyer family; Ron and Jeanette Hoyer (founders), Michael Hoyer (Owner) and family (Cole, Tyler, Bradly Hoyer, and Ashlee Iverson) and Donna (Jamie) Olson and their kids Isaac and Ma Kenna. We currently milk 130 Registered Holsteins, Jerseys and Brown Swiss that are housed in a freestall barn and milked in a double 10 herringbone parlor. We raise all of our replacement heifers and run close to 450 acres of cropland. How long have you been breeding for Polled and what inspired you to start? We have been actively breeding for Polled cattle for the last two years. We got our start when we purchased

#PolledPlacings

Dix Daniel Express P-Red*PO as a Red Polled springer. I thought that the Polled industry was still a niche market and I wanted to try my luck with it. Also, the plus of not having to dehorn calves was also a bonus for me. What is your breeding philosophy for Polled? We have been using the aAa® Weeks® analysis program as a tool on our farm. We have been using that same program when choosing sires and mating cattle to Polled sires. Who was your first Polled animal? We purchased Dix Daniel Express P-Red*PO two years ago as our starting point. We have also been using Polled sires on our homebred families that go back to my father (Michael)’s founding cows that were purchased from Bert Brown of Neshonoc Farms. Another family that we have Polled offspring from goes back to Kranzdale Dusk Dusky who is related to Hauve Advent Dreamy-Red. What Polled bulls are represented in your herd? Currently we have calves on the ground by Lets Deal P, Trillion P and Corporal P. What Polled bulls are you currently using? We are currently using Jay P, Dancer P-Red, Advantage PP and Cloud Nine-P. What are your thoughts on the availability of Polled bulls? I think it is getting easier to find Polled bulls and the quality is getting better. The more popular that they become the better selection we will have. What would you like to see available in the future? I would like more Polled bulls with higher type. I am into showing cattle and would like to see more bulls out of some of the top cattle in the country. Where do you see the future of Polled? I see Polled cattle throughout the dairy breeds increasing in the future. I can see consumers pushing for the Polled gene because it is more humane. I think that it is just at the beginning stage and there is a lot more to come in the future.

A Focus on International Polled

Suntor Holsteins - Kevin & Amanda Sundborg - Canada

The bulls I use reflect more for the type of cow we will be wanting to milk - trouble free, high production and good fertility. I use bulls with good balanced genomic proofs, but also use extreme bulls when I can. This year I flushed, or will flush, Polled daughters of Powerball, Harpoon, Silver, Ocean and Milford.

Kevin, Amanda & Saydie Sundborg Suntor Holsteins is located in Ormstown, Quebec, Canada and was started in 1973 by my father. I have been farming full time since graduating college in 2000. The farm is now owned by myself and my wife Amanda and we have a 9 month old daughter, Saydie. We currently milk in a tiestall barn, but are in the process of building a new freestall barn with robotic milkers. To date, our herd consists of 120 head and 40% of the herd is Polled. We breed for cows that are from good strong maternal families, emphasizing on production, sound type and trouble free cows. We have been using genomic information since it has been available. We aim to breed modern, profitable cows. I don't mind using a bull who is different, or off the radar. If the mating does turn out, you can usually credit the maternal line. I started adding Polled bulls to the breeding program 5 years ago. I decided to incorporate Polled genetics to make Polled females from my best cow families. I see the future of Polled genetics being more widely accepted and demanded. Just the quality and quantity of Polled genetics that are out there is increasing all the time.

Suntor Ohare Evie P VG-86-2Y Projected at 2-00 305d 29,300 lbs. We have several families we work with including Suntor Aeroline Joy, OConnors Goldwyn Jasmine, Calbrett Super Elsie, Regancrest Durham Barbie and the Roxy family. We currently have, or are adding Polled to these cow families. Looking to the future, our goals are to continue to breed the modern type of cow which will produce large volumes of milk efficiently. Despite only having five years of Polled breeding under our belts, it is very safe to say that we look ahead with enthusiasm to the future of our herd as we look to improve on the cattle we already have.

POLLED Excitement! August has been an exciting month! We classified the beginning of the month and we received our August proofs. Polled classification highlight: Lemajru-N Manuel Pia P scored 82 at 2y 2m and less than 30 days fresh! She was an optional cow on our list, but when the classifier saw her, he figured she should be scored. We have two more Manuel P daughters that we're excited about too!

POLLED Holstein History by Dr. Larry Specht

“I’ve always been interested in dairy cattle history and in my travels as an ExPOLLED BREEDERS MENTIONED tension Dairy Specialist at Penn State, I came across several herds that had one George E. Stevenson, PA or more Polled Holsteins. One especially nice one was an EX-92 Whilrlhill KingMiller Brothers, PA pin daughter. I began to trace pedigrees and try and determine the origin of the J.J. Joe & Margaret Carpenter, PA Red was a hot topic in the early days of my career at Penn State (late 1950s and G.G. Sumner, PA the 1960s). After retiring, I began to write about what I had learned and I continNancy L. Tinklepaugh, PA ue to have a serious interest in both traits. I think the Polled trait will become Dr. Jesse L. & William Lenker, PA more important to the Holstein breed and when the “high profile” herds become Elmer Dolin, PA involved, there will be a major surge in interest.” - Dr. Larry Specht Humphreyholm Farm, NY H.W.
