Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys... (Unless they show early signs of a rare condition known as "Polled Addiction")

Today as I sat and thought about what the future holds for our POLLED breeding program, I found myself thinking about our grandsons. With all the changes going on in the dairy industry, I wonder what it will be like when they are old enough to take over or will they even want to be involved? I hope so, but that will be totally up to them. If they do want to dairy, I hope they have to explain to their kids what a dehorner is. Hopefully we will be 100% POLLED by then! The picture here is of our grandson Wyatt holding the halter of Angie. Angie is a 4 year old SS Deuce daughter. She is not POLLED, but she is a very balanced EX cow with lots of milk that we hope to make a lot of POLLED calves out of over the next couple of years. She is red carrier and is currently bred to Ladd P-Red. Plans are to calve her in as a 5 year old and then flush her to 4 or 5 different POLLED bulls. Breeding POLLED may be a bit slower this way, but we just love to see POLLED heifers out of great cows around here. Yep, George Strait was right, "Cowboys like us sure do have fun"! Lenkaitis Holsteins, Andy & Sarah Lenkaitis - Illinois A #PolledPromoter is someone that shares Polled with others. Andy & Sarah Lenkaitis share their dairy background, how they became involved with Polled and their future plans that, of course, involve Polled!

Lenkaitis Holsteins is located in St. Charles, Illinois – a suburb just 40 miles west of Chicago. The family dairy farm was started by Albert Sr. and Mary Etta in 1983 with just five animals. Today, the farm consists of 90 Registered Holsteins and is enjoyed by three generations of the Lenkaitis family – including Albert and Mary Etta’s four children and ten grandchildren. The youngest of the four children, Andy and his wife, Sarah work closely with Albert Sr. and Mary Etta and have been managing the farm since 2014. While the hallmark of the herd has always been developing Red & White genetics with balanced type and production. Our first Polled purchase was a 29HO12209 Picston Shottle-ET calf from Golden Oaks Perk Rae-Red *PO EX-90. Unfortunately, she died as a yearling, but that didn’t stop Albert Sr.’s interest in acquiring Polled genetics. In 2012, he made a special purchase from the Mil-R-Mor Anniversary Sale which bridged our interest in Red & White Holsteins with Polled genetics. She was Mil-R-Mor Debnair Bella P-Red*PO – a two-year-old Polled 7HO9552 Scientific Debonair-Red-ETS from Mil-R-Mor Bonni-Bell P-Red-ET EX-94. She has developed into a tremendous cow for us, and she is currently housed at Sunshine Genetics where she is being flushed to 179HO108 ND-Druvale Garett P-Red. Bella sparked our interest in Polled genetics as she demonstrated to us the strong market and genetic potential for Polled genetics within Red & White Holsteins. While we are currently milking in a tie-stall barn, we are looking to transition to a robot barn in the next two years. Because of this, we are focused on breeding well-attached udders with correct teat Mil-R-Mor Debnair Bella P-Red EX-90 placement. As life-long Red & White Holstein breeders, using Polled genetics represents a different way of thinking for us. In contrast to red coat color, Polled only requires one copy of the marker to be present to be expressed. As a result, we find we’re able to more easily incorporate Polled into families of interest and have an opportunity to make and market Polled calves from unique pedigrees. She has a Homozygous Polled, Red carrier winter calf by 14HO7449 Ocean PP-ET and is bred back to 54HO754 Mr Sunview Coin Sunfish-ET. We always have a small selection of Polled bulls on-hand for consideration as we select matings for our heifers and cows, and we are currently using 179HO108 ND-Druvale Garett P-Red. We are focused on selecting bulls that offer appealing cow families with balanced type and production. With each sire summary, we continue to find new Polled bulls that fit what we’re seeking as the interest in Polled genetics has driven greater availability and rapid progress. Polled genetics have been built on a great foundation, and we see the quality and quantity of bulls continuing to move forward. Because we are a small Registered Red & White Holstein herd, we are looking for our cows to both score well when classified and complete solid production records. We would like to see bulls, especially those that are Red & White, offer a balance of both high-type and solid production and components. We have continued to see the increased interest in Polled genetics and will continue to incorporate it into our breeding philosophy for merchandising opportunities. Breeder Perspectives on POLLED This magazine was developed for those passionate about Polled! In the #PolledPanel feature of #PolledPlace, breeders have the opportunity to share their perspective on Polled. Thank you to these breeders for sharing their Polled story and views on the future of Polled in their respective breeds! POLLED HOLSTEINS Gullicksrud Farm Rachel Gullicksrud Strum, Wisconsin Farm Background The Gullicksrud farm is located in Strum, Wisconsin. My parents along with my boyfriend run day to day duties. How long have you been breeding for Polled and what inspired you to start? For me what really started my breeding for Polled was when we do our monthly calf vaccinations and dehorning, I said to myself, "Wouldn't it be nice if calves didn't have horns?" Now it's just an easier process. Who wouldn't want to have a Polled calf?! What is your breeding philosophy for Polled? I continue to look for the same traits in non-Polled and Polled bulls as each proof comes out there seems to be more traits fit to our herd in Polled bulls. Who was the first Polled bull you used? We started out with the Shotzy-P bull, he was a great bull to use, we have several offspring in the milking string. What Polled bulls are represented in your herd? Currently we have a few Shotzy-P, Addiction-P and Soccer-P daughters to name a few. What Polled bulls are you currently using? Currently we are using Plus-PP, Powerball-P, Revival-PP and Golden-PP. What are your thoughts on the availability of Polled bulls? It's really neat to see the offspring of Polled bulls come through at the farm, what a time saver! I think there could be more Polled bulls, but with the genetic world continuing to change I'm sure more will soon be available. What would you like to see available in the future? Hopefully as genetics keep on evolving in our industry, each company can find ways to keep up with the latest industry wants and needs. I think you'll see a lot more Polled bulls come through each line-up. Where do you see the future of Polled? Moving forward, our farm will continue breeding for Polled...what else do you have to lose, except the horns! :)

Farm Background Our farm is located in Fillmore, New York. We milk 45 Registered Holsteins. The farm is run by a father and son team of Bruce and Justin Hinz. In addition Bruce’s wife Kathie and Justin’s fiancé Carrie also lend a helping hand when they aren’t working their off farm jobs. We also have two part time employees to help with the calves from the embryo transfer program. We started farming in Fillmore in 1969 when Justin’s grandfather Roger Hinz bought the home farm. How long have you been breeding for Polled and what inspired you to start? We started breeding for Polled four years ago and started using Polled because of the extra marketing tool that it provided for our ET program. Furthermore, the Polled gene was starting to become more attractive because the quality of the bulls that carried it was increasing. Kathie and Carrie were overjoyed when they found out the calves wouldn’t need dehorning, which helped with the overall farm morale. What is your breeding philosophy for Polled? Our philosophy for Polled is that we like to use it whenever it fits and makes sense for our breeding program. We actively market our calves on both numbers and confirmation. One of the first Polled bulls we used was Ladd P-Red. He was appealing because not only were his numbers for GTPI competitive, but he was also a Destry son which gave of us the confidence to use him as a potential sire for show calves. What cow family did you start breeding Polled into? One of the first families we added the Polled gene to was the Miss Special family. We owned an EX-92 Advent right out of Miss Special that we flushed to Ladd P-Red, Proxy PP-Red, Special Effect P-Red, Satchel P and Golden PP-Red. Currently we are working with a Polled Variant Red heifer sired by Eraser P from the Windsor-Manor Rud Zip Family. We are also flushing a VG-88 Polled Advent from the Roxy family who is the maternal sister to the dam of Golden PPRed and the dam of Rockstar PP-Red at Jetstream Genetics. What Polled bulls are represented in your herd? Ladd P-Red, Proxy PP Red, Special Effect P-Red, Satchel P and Golden PP-Red. What Polled bulls are you currently using? We are currently using Ladd P-Red, Addiction P-Red, Miller P and Zipit P What are your thoughts on the availability of Polled bulls? We feel that the availability of Polled bulls is increasing over the years and it is becoming easier to find Polled bulls that fit any breeding program. What would you like to see available in the future? We would like to see a selection of Polled bulls that offer the same genetic merits that their horned counter parts do. We feel this gap is becoming smaller as time goes on. We would also like to see the continued and increased presence of the Polled gene in the show ring and believe Addiction P-Red and Ladd P-Red are both helping to fill this gap. Where do you see the future of Polled? We see the percentage of Polled animals in our herd increasing as time goes on. Our first Polled females are milking and we are starting to flush them to increase the number of Polled animals in our herd.

D&D F Gate Ottawa Casey P-Red*PO VG-87 4-04 2x 356d 26,720 4.4 1172 3.5 938 D&D Holsteins is located in southwest Minnesota at Sanborn. Part of our farm is a century farm starting with my grandparents, Frank and Mildred Crippen. They milked cows because the sandy soil here didn’t always have a good grain crop, but they could raise forage for the cattle. My parents, Dean and Dorothy Gransee had grade Holsteins, but started buying a few HFA registered animals and started the D&D prefix. In 1975, I registered our last grade cows with RWDCA to get purebred papers on all our cows and started breeding for Reds. I, along with my wife Gloria, bought out my dad and brother, Dick in 1989. We have three children, Salena, Garrett and Chelsie, but none wanted to farm so on September 27, 2013, I sold all milking cows and bred heifers and many of the young stock. I kept around 25 head of calves, especially a few Polled and red animals. Cattle from the sale sold to five states and one to Canada. Fred Hendricks did aAa for me for years, and with his company, SunShower Acres, provided me with a good selection of Red and White sires, some of them Polled. One of the first Polled bulls I used was Perk P, but his daughters all had horns. My best Perk P daughter, Cindy-Red was VG 88 and had a Front Gate daughter, Caitlyn-Red VG 85, that matched aAa numbers with a Polled bull at ABS, Ottawa P-RC. The resulting heifer, D&D F Gate Ottawa Casey P-Red VG-87 was my first Polled heifer. I am still working with her family today. Interestingly, Fred also sold me semen from Lawn Boy P-Red, and I had three of his earliest daughters. Based on my three daughters, he should have been cut as the daughters classified 76, 72 and 71, but milked ok. Luck does play a part in a breeding program. Another good Polled cow, D&D Hwood Rocco Else-P-Red-TW, was sold as a calf at a Minnesota Red & White Sale to Jessica Crull and turned out to be an EX cow with several Polled daughters to date and she is still in the Briar Holsteins herd today. Four Polled bulls from my herd have seen AI use: Cal-P-Red at Sierra Desert Breeders, Chad-P-RC at Glenmark Genetics and full brothers, Goldwyn P-Red and Mogul P-Red, at ABC Genetics. All of these bulls come from Casey P-Red's family. Over the years when selecting for bulls, I tended to choose production with acceptable type. I wanted cows with a strong frame, good feet and legs and a good quality udder. We had a cold freestall barn, so our cows needed to handle the weather and be able to fight for their feed at the bunk.

D&D Holsteins, Dennis Gransee - Minnesota

A couple of semen salesmen had a standing bet as to which could sell me semen from a minus production bull; they never collected. I started using genomic information as it became available. I was always looking for bulls that were outcrosses to many popular bloodlines. The Polled cow family I am still working with is the Casey P family. Since I sold most of my herd, I have put a few Polled heifers on a ET program. I am still hoping to create that outcross Red Polled calf that will have world wide impact; my way of playing the lottery. I currently have D&D Beacon Mogul Casey P-ET-RC GP-83 housed at Dr. Kim Olson’s. She is a Mogul daughter out of an Endroad Beacon daughter out of Ottawa Casey P-Red. She is the dam of Goldwyn P-Red and Mogul P-Red. She currently has three embryo pregnancies by Heinz. She has two RC Polled Redstar P daughters, Crystal PP (+2112 GTPI) bred to Tarzan and Cynthia P (+2024 GTPI). She is currently bred to Chad P. Chad is a son of Ottawa Casey P-Red which makes this calf linebred to Casey P and Mogul on both sides. I also have two Polled Save daughters, Cera P-Red (+2152 GTPI) and Cecile P (+2128 GTPI). They are daughters of Cal P from a Matrix daughter of Casey P-Red. Cecile P has pregnancies by Piranha P and both Cecile P and Cera P have pregnancies by Chad P. These resulting calves will be major outcrosses with most Polled cattle, so I will be eagerly awaiting their arrival and genomic tests. Although I didn’t start out selecting for Polled, as more Polled genetics became available, I tended to use more Polled bulls. The genetic difference between Polled and horned has narrowed considerably as many top cow families now have Polled offspring. Also, animal right actions are making Polled a coming certainty. The other positive for Polled is doing away with dehorning which no one likes and have calves that don’t have that additional stress. My breeding program is unique because I am emphasizing the bloodlines of Ottawa P and Mogul in Red color with no horns. I am always looking for people interested in Polled cattle, as when these heifers freshen, I need to find them a home since I no longer have a milking herd. I am also looking for embryo recipient arrangements. I think that the future will favor Polled cattle because of less stress, but also because of public demand. As one local vet said, “Since production is now so similar between horned and Polled, why not Polled?”

Polled Testing

There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pc/Pc POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/Pf POLLED.
