Polled Reflections from the "Front Porch"

Chapter 4 The "Gold" at the End of the Rainbow

I think we finally found it! After hearing about the elusive "pot of gold at the end of the rainbow" for years now, I had all but given up hope of finding it! Then one evening after a brief storm there was a beautiful rainbow over the free stall barn. I went to check but nope, still no pot of gold! Ugh! But guess what I did find? I found a POLLED Significant daughter milking 137 lbs. a day and then I found a POLLED Marion daughter milking 112 lbs. and a POLLED Magna P daughter with 127 lbs. Huh! Maybe I misunderstood and they were saying "POLLED" at the end of the rainbow all along. Yep, I think we finally found it!" Donald & Joan Yoder & Family

#PolledPanel

Breeder Perspectives on POLLED This magazine was developed for those passionate about Polled! In the #PolledPanel feature of #PolledPlace, breeders have the opportunity to share their perspective on Polled. Thank you to these breeders for sharing their Polled story and views on the future of Polled in their respective breeds! POLLED HOLSTEINS Goers Family Dairy, LLC Matt Goers Shawano, Wisconsin Farm Background Goers Family Dairy, LLC is located in Northeast Wisconsin, near Shawano and has been operated by our family since 1869. It is currently owned and operated by myself as well as my parents, David and Marilyn and an older brother, Jeff. Jeff is married to Tami and has three children. His wife works off on the farm in accounting. I handle the herdsman type duties including all of the breeding program which includes tail painting, heat detection, mating and breeding, as well as fresh cow health, herd checks, etc. Jeff does all the TMR mixing and feeding, as well as fieldwork. David does a lot of manure handling and fieldwork and Marilyn is in charge of bookwork and most calf raising duties. Around 500 acres is cropped for our own use to feed our herd which numbers 210 milking and dry and around 200 youngstock. Animals are housed in sand bedded freestalls and milking is done in a double 8 herringbone parlor by myself and Jeff. Calves are raised indoors in individual pens and moved into groups after weaning. How long have you been breeding for Polled and what inspired you to start? About ten years ago ABS had some polled bulls and I used some semen, but didn't end up with many heifers, except for a couple sired by Ottawa-P. It did intrigue me though and I began to do some research. At that time I began to learn about Hickorymea and Burket-Falls. Then, five years ago I started working with Nancy Sell and she introduced me to some polled bulls in the Trans-World Genetics lineup. With more success by using sexed semen to create polled heifers, my interest grew! Nobody likes dehorning here and it was nice to have a polled calf here and there to skip on dehorning day. What is your breeding philosophy for Polled? Although we are a commercial, freestall operation, we do enjoy larger framed cattle with that extra eye appeal that can classify well. So, my ideal polled cow needs to have a good size frame, wide muzzle and chest for feed intake/ aggressiveness at the feed rail, a well attached udder with proper teat placement for easy parlor milking, and a good set of legs and mobility to handle the freestall environment. We also strive for high components and high lifetime milk production. We like cows to last and have many older cows in the herd reflecting this mating program. It is my goal to breed numerous high scoring and long lasting polled cattle! What cow family did you start breeding Polled into? It mainly started with my "Z" family here, a homebred

10 #PolledPlace

favorite family that makes consistently good cattle. I figured by using the earlier polled bulls on them I would see the most progress and it worked! I have a Pheno-P 2-yr-old milking that is my ideal polled 2-yr-old as well as an older Soccer-P that is scored VG86 with a 90pt udder. By using sexed semen in these families it was a win win...polled and heifers! Another cow family here is my "A" family I have developed. There are two EX90 cows in the herd right now from this family bred to Lumber PP and Ball of Wax PP for 2016 calvings. I've also been using polled on some cow families I have bought into including a Domain from 5 generations VG or EX, a Brono from 9 generations VG or EX, a Canyon from 5 generations VG or EX and an Epic that is backed by the EX94 Vidalia family at Frozenes Holsteins. My goal is to keep these cow families going with the addition of the great polled gene for the future! What Polled bulls are represented in your herd? Milking daughters of Soccer-P, Pheno-P, Midas-P and Parkson-P are all doing well here and some are getting to their 3rd lactation and really maturing into nice cattle that are making some good records here. Cows that breed back and last are the ones that we like and they all excel at it! In the heifer pens we have some more Pheno-P daughters springing up and further down the line we are liking the Outline-P and Hybrid-P heifers that are about a year old now. In the calf pens, we have some Lleweyn-P calves that are impressive with extreme width and great legs on them. What Polled bulls are you currently using? The breeding program is now almost all polled, since there are so many great type sires out there now. On the cows, I'm heavily using Piranha-P, Labryrinth-P, Revival PP, Korbin PP, Ball of Wax PP, Sellabull PP and Atlanta-P. Heifers are being serviced to Blueprint PP, City PP, Amor-P, Bagphee-P and GoTime-P. What are your thoughts on the availability of Polled bulls? What started small has become huge! The first bulls released and their cow families really got the ball rolling and made a good foundation for what we see today. Today, it's easy to find polled bulls out of most any popular cow family, which I think is very exciting. As a Holstein breeder I am very thankful for the many options out there. I really like the fact that most polled bulls have desirable health traits as well udder linears that are widening the teats somewhat; there are so many Holstein bulls out there today that are really getting extreme on udder cleft which can cause issues in the parlor. What would you like to see available in the future? I hope to continue to see high type bulls like Ball of Wax PP and Piranha-P emerge and would love to see sons of them. With the genetics emerging, I see no reason why polled can't become a part of any herd's mating program no matter what their emphasis is. With that said, I hope to continue to see some of the bigger name breeders put out some polled bulls from their best families. It's great to see some new bulls with great families behind them show up on the #PolledPlacings lists which I follow very closely. Where do you see the future of Polled in your breed? The future is now! With animal welfare a huge issue, dehorning is only going to become a bigger issue in my opinion. continued on page 11

continued from page 10 Polled is the perfect answer. The time savings of a day otherwise spent dehorning is very pleasant for both us and the calves. It's an exciting time to be a polled breeder and I hope someday 100% of the herd will be polled! I think its very possible seeing the genetics out there, as well as our own maternal lines we have to work with, and continuing to bring in embryos from top polled families. Additional comments. I think the early polled breeders really deserve a lot of credit for what they did, taking a chance and using their own bulls on cow families they believed in. I also want to thank Stephanie for getting the #PolledPlace magazine going and Nancy Sell for putting the first few issues in my hands! That was really a spark that started the fire for me; reading about polled breeding programs around the world and getting to know some of those breeders in person and on Facebook. I love talking matings and hearing other ideas. POLLED HOLSTEINS Beech-Grove Red & Whites Brenden Benscoter Laceyville, Pennsylvania Background of your farm. Beech-Grove Red&Whites is located in Laceyville, Pennsylvania and I own registered Red & White Holsteins. How long have you been breeding for Polled and what inspired you to start? We have used polled bulls lightly for three years now, and are currently adding more and more usage to our breeding program. What is your breeding philosophy for Polled? I myself have never made polled a specific priority, but I always say, "I'm going for RED and a HEIFER and if it's POLLED, well that's just chocolate icing on a chocolate cake!" What cow family did you start breeding Polled into? I started breeding polled into one of my foundation cows, a Reality-Red from the Roncon Carla Factor-Red family. What Polled bulls are represented in your herd? We currently have the most offspring from our pasture bull, Pristine-Vis Bolt-P-Red-ET who is a Colt-P out of an EX91 September Storm. What Polled bulls are you currently using? We currently have pregnancies by Colt P-Red and Magna P *RC due this spring to late summer and the bulls we currently have in the tank include Kit Kat P-Red, Magna P *RC, Trillion-P-Red, and the legendary Lawn Boy P-Red. What are your thoughts on the availability of Polled bulls? It is my opinion that polled sires will become more and more popular and thus increase in availability and increase the number of different sires throughout the whole industry and all breeds. What would you like to see available in the future? Something that I would like to see available in the future is higher type and more outcross in the polled genetics, which I do believe will happen in time. Where do you see the future of Polled in your breed? Polled definitely has it's place and it will be around for a long time!

#PolledPassport Northern Lights, Kleehaven & Lady Grove - Will Naylor - Canada A Focus on International Polled

My name is Will Naylor, from Manitoba, Canada. My wife Traci and I, along with our 3 children Anneka (5), Ezra (2), and Maya (4 months), farm alongside my parents, Ivan and Diane, as well as my brother Phil and his wife Joylyn, in the southeastern part of the province. We are located about 40 minutes south of Winnipeg. My parents moved to Canada from the United Kingdom in 1986, and bought a small dairy farm near the town of Kleefeld. They established the prefix "Kleehaven", combining "Klee" from Kleefeld, and "haven" from their previous farm in Britain, "Haven Grange." I myself have started my own prefix, "Northern-Lights" for a few cattle that I own personally. We are predominantly a Holstein herd, but we also have a number of Milking Shorthorns as well, which are registered under the "Lady Grove" prefix. My parents started off with 20 cows at first and gradually grew to about 120. In 2010, with my brother and I both active on the farm, we purchased a neighboring freestall facility that could milk 140 cows in a swing parlor. Today we are milking 80 cows in the original tie stall and 140 in the freestall barn 2 miles away. We farm 1,100 acres growing mostly corn and alfalfa for silage as well as grain. We aim to treat our animals with the best care that we possibly can, as well as provide an enjoyable place for our employees and ourselves to make a living. Over the next few months, we plan on switching our freestall barn over to robots. This is an exciting change and we are looking forward to putting this technology to work to see how we can best provide an environment that is not only as comfortable and calm as possible for the cows, but also to have the advantage of monitoring each and every cow that much closer. I am also interested in seeing how to incorporate the best possible genetics for a robotic system, to maximize each stall in the barn and have each cow fulfill her genetic potential. Genetics is always something that I have had a great deal of

interest in. I pick sires that excel in the traits geared towards profit. I use a lot of the high Net Merit bulls, rather than ones that are high only on TPI. I like having high pounds of fat and protein, along with positive percentages. I also want high DPR, PL and low Somatic Cell Score, as well as low Calving Ease. I try to avoid bulls over 8 for Calving Ease. SCS is something I feel is just starting to creep back up too high in many of the high index sires with the recent push for production traits. I also like to use some of the other health traits such as Mastitis Resistance and especially Body Condition Score, I like bulls over 100 on our Canadian system. On the type side, I try to limit stature as well as starting to try to incorporate slightly wider rear teat placement when possible. I'm currently working with many different branches of the Rudy Missy family, both horned and polled. I personally bought a Mogul daughter of Ammon-Peachey Shauna in 2013, out of whom I bred a polled Powerball P daughter, Northern-Lites Miracle P, who was the 2nd highest polled female in the breed after the August 2015 proof. A heifer that we have had great success with IVF on lately, is a polled Chevrolet daughter, Pine-Tree 5555 Chev 6390, from the same line as Balisto and Mogul, and are looking forward to her calving in late summer. We are also working with a few polled members of the Hickorymea "O" family, including Pine-Tree 5933 1stC 6802, a polled Alta1stClass daughter who is over $800 Net Merit and will be starting IVF in the next couple of weeks. With our Milking Shorthorns, our main families would be Valleycrest Alice 39, Lands-Brook Chardonnay, Rovin Derek Ali Accent-P and Kilbucko Betty. We have a growing number of polled animals from each of these families, including our first potential homozygous polled bull from the Ali Accent-P line! Polled breeding has been a growing part of our program. My mom was the first person that suggested to me that I should include polled in our matings. Shortly after that, we purchased a Diehard cow from Pine-Tree and not long after we bought her, she gave birth to a polled heifer calf by Colt P, and I've been hooked since! As we go forward into the future, I fully believe that polled breeding is here to stay. The gap between the highest polled animals and the highest horned is constantly shrinking. I believe that once there are a few more options for homozygous polled sires at a genetic level near the high horned ones, I think then we will see many commercial dairymen take dehorning out of their calf-raising protocols and instead make the switch to homozygous polled bulls only. There is a huge amount of room for growth with the polled trait, and we are extremely excited to be a part of it going forward!

In 2016, we continue to use the Australian Polled Sire AUSSIEGOLD(P), along with a range of international sires.

POLLED GENETICS UNLOCK YOUR POTENTIAL FOR A BETTER FUTURE! Taughboyne Jerseys Victoria, Australia taughboyne@bigpond.com

Taughboyne AusGold Ella 13078(P) (above) is already one of our favorites and expecting a Santana-P calf in March. Our first two AussieGold(P) heifers have 1st lactation PIs (Production Index) of 116 and 110. WOW!! Who would have thought breeding Polled would be SO MUCH FUN!?!?

Polled Testing

There are 2 independent origins of polled, one found in Holstein-Friesian and Jersey breeds (Pf), the other in many European breeds of Celtic origin (Pc) such as Angus, Blonde d’Aquitaine, Dexter, Limousin, Charolais, and Hereford, among others. Polledness is dominant; a polled animal can have one or two copies of the gene. All offspring of a bull with 2 copies of polled (homozygous) will be polled. Genetic testing is a cost-effective means to determine if a polled animal has 1 or 2 copies of the gene. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a test for the polled gene to assist breeders in selecting cattle that have 2 copies of Polled gene. H/H HORNED. No copies of either Polled molecular marker are present. Pf/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pf/Pf POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Friesian molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/H POLLED. One copy of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker is present. At least 50% of the offspring will be polled. Pc/Pc POLLED. Two copies of the Polled-Celtic molecular marker are present. All offspring will be polled. Pc/Pf POLLED. One copy of Polled-Celtic and 1 copy of Polled-Friesian molecular markers are present. All offspring will be polled.
