Moffat County residents took part in Tuesday night’s Republican Party precinct caucuses, which were touted as the most attended caucuses in recent memory.

“There was a large turnout throughout the county, which is very good,” said Rick Barnes, former Precinct 1 co-chairperson and candidate for Moffat County Commission District 2. “At our precinct if we had had another 15 people show, they would have been looking for a bigger room at (Ridgeview Elementary School) for us.

We were packed.”

Audrey Danner, a registered Republican in Precinct 1 and commission District 2 incumbent, was also encouraged by the turnout.

“Forrest Luke and Rick Barnes ran a good session,” Danner said. “It was definitely one of the larger turnouts for that precinct.”

Precinct caucuses are the most grassroots level of the political process in the state, said KC Hume, Moffat County Republican Party chairman.

The primary purpose is to elect delegates to represent the respective precincts at the March 24 Moffat County Republican Party Assembly,

CRAIG FIRE/RESCUE firefighters pump compressed air foam into the roof of a home at 1912 Woodland Ave., in an effort to suppress a fire. Craig Police Sgt. Corey Wagner, and officers Lance Eldridge and Mike Edwards were first on scene. They were able to pull one of the occupants, Patrick Hunter, 75, out of the burning building to safety.

Preliminary reports suggest Tuesday night’s fire in Craig that claimed 67-year-old Ursula Hunter was accidental.

However, officials said a definitive cause has not been determined.

John Forgay, a sergeant with the Craig Police Department, is investigating the fire at 1912 Woodland Ave. He said the fire department views the fire as accidental.

But, he said there are concerning issues, and he and fire officials have theories on what sparked the blaze.

“The adults were on supplemental oxygen and also smoked,” Forgay said.

He said a neighbor reported hearing “pops” shortly after the fire began.

“There was a lot of supple-

mental oxygen in the home, but we couldn’t find any indication that anything had blown up,” Forgay said. “It’s not uncommon in house fires for things to explode like coke cans or household cleaning solvents. So, we don’t see (oxygen) as the cause.”

Instead, Forgay said police and fire officials are focused on the southeast bedroom as the origin of the blaze.

“We are more concerned with a small heater in the bedroom that had most of the damage,” Forgay said. “We and the fire department are looking at where the most intense heat from the fire was and it would be more relevant that the fire started there.”

Downtown Art Walk & Taste of Chocolate set for Saturday night

Whether it’s coming from an artist’s palette or tickling the taste buds of your own, you can find more than one kind of aesthetically pleasing experience in downtown Craig this weekend.

Businesses along Yampa Avenue host the annual Art Walk & Taste of Chocolate on Saturday.

From 5 to 8 p.m., residents can enjoy works of all types, be they on canvas or a baking sheet.

Organizer Kandee Dilldine said 15 downtown businesses will have local artists and their work on display, with their creative expressions in multiple media.

“We’ve got some painters, but we’ve also got quilters, photographers, woodworkers, people who make their own jewelry, all kinds of stuff,” she said.

For example, Dilldine’s shop, KS Kreations, will house an oil painting by Sharon Kohls.

“She’s got kind of a Bob Ross technique, like ‘happy little trees and clouds,’” Dilldine said.

The Art Walk portion of the evening, now in its 17th year, is free.

The other half of the night has a cost attached to it.

Tickets for Taste of Chocolate, in its sixth year, are $12 to sample the confections available from 13 chocolatiers. Just like art on display, the sweet treats come in different forms.

“In the past, we’ve had people who make fudge, truffles, brownies,” Dilldine said. “I’m not sure what all we’ll be having this year, but it should be good. Everyone

Danny L. Prow, 57, of Elk Mountain, Wyo., died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, at Ivinson Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.

He was born Feb. 25, 1954, in Madisonville, Ky., to his parents Gene and Bonnie (Wyatt) Prow. He spent his childhood in Bisbee, Ariz. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Airborne Rangers from 1971 until 1973.

On March 8, 1980, he married Debbie Laird in Douglas, Wyo. He worked in the mining industry for 27 years in Wyoming and Colorado.

He will be remembered as a special man, impacting many lives in the ranching and agriculture industry and was a member of the Wyoming Stock Growers Land Trust and a Mason.

He had a passion for nature as an avid outdoorsman. He loved to camp, hunt and fish.

He had been working at the Elk Mountain ranch for the last eight years. He had a great sense of humor and was a wonderful father, husband, son, brother, uncle and friend.

He was preceded in death

by James and Jean Laird, Art Owens, Grandma and Grandpa Troy Preston, Joe Taylor, James Underwood and Kelly Wyatt.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie, of Elk Mountain; son Joshua, of Rawlins,

Ed Case died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2012, in Denver, where he lived for several years.

Edward Everett Case, Jr., or Ed, was born Feb. 25, 1932, on a ranch near Craig, to parents Edwards “Everett,” Sr., and Lena Miller Case.

He attended school in Craig, Meeker, Kremmling and Rifle, graduating from high school in Rifle.

Ed had several occupations before being employed by Mercedes Benz. He also spent two years with the Peace Corps in Tunsia.

Ed raised four children: Mike, Susan (Jim), Janice (Robert) and Jill (Marc).

He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Lena Case; two infant sisters; sister Beverly Peyton; and sons Edward and Michael.

Fire: Jones: Impossible to determine fire’s cause due to extent of damage space heater, but was not feeling well and brought it into the bedroom for warmth.

The family also said the bedroom contained long curtains that would have almost touched the floor.

“There was nothing left of those except a curtain rod,” Forgay said.

“It’s a strong possibility and we feel fairly secure that is the most logical place for the fire’s origin.”

Dennis Jones, Craig Fire/ Rescue battalion chief, said the fire department’s theories mesh with Forgay’s, but the extent of damage make it almost impossible to confirm the cause.

Jones said the fire department is no longer investigating the blaze.

“We’re yielding to the insurance company and the police department from here, unless something comes up requiring further investigation on our end.”

Sgt. Corey Wagner, Lance Eldridge and Mike Edwards of the police department were first on the scene and were able to pull Ursula’s companion, Patrick Hunter, 75, from the burning

building.

“Initially, officers were informed that no one was home at the residence,” the police department reported in a news release.

“However, noting a vehicle in the driveway, they approached the front door and began knocking to see if there was any response.”

Edwards and Eldridge heard Patrick’s voice from inside the home but were unable to see him through the smoke that rendered “visibility difficult, at best,” according to the release.

Edwards crouched down, flashlight in hand, and saw Patrick’s hand. The officer then crawled to the man, grabbed his hand and, with help from Wagner and Eldridge, began pulling him out of the house, the police department reported.

Patrick was transported to The Memorial Hospital in Craig for treatment.

TMH spokeswoman Jennifer Riley said Patrick has been transferred to another hospital. She could not elaborate on his condition.

After extensive firefighting efforts, the blaze was extinguished late Tuesday night, officials

reported.

Although the home experienced “extensive” damage, no other structures were affected, according to the release.

‘They were good people’ In the fourth quarter of Tuesday night’s Moffat County High School boys varsity basketball game, Steve Hafey and his wife Fay threw on their coats and rushed from the high school gym.

They had gotten word a home near theirs on Woodland Avenue was on fire, Steve said.

When they arrived, they found a blaze consuming the home of the Hunters, who lived two houses down.

Once the Hafeys saw their home wasn’t in danger, their thoughts went to their neighbors.

“Immediately, we were worried about (the Hunters,)” said Steve, 70.

The size of the flames leaping from the rear of the house didn’t give the Hafeys much cause for hope.

“The south-sloping roof was engulfed in flames,” Steve said.

“And they were shooting, I would

say, 20-feet high off the roof.”

After police officers saved Patrick, a fire department rescue crew found Ursula deeper inside the home, according to the police department’s news release.

Firefighters removed Ursula from the home and tried to resuscitate her.

Ursula, however, could not be saved. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Moffat County Coroner Kirk McKey said he did not know the cause or time of death.

“We’re still investigating that part,” he said.

He could not be reached for comment Thursday.

The Hafeys said the Hunters were avid gardeners who shared their harvest with the neighborhood.

It wasn’t uncommon for Patrick to bring the Hafeys tomatoes they had grown or to give a friendly greeting in passing, said Fay, 69.

The Hunters were a “very unobtrusive” couple, Steve said.

“They were good people,” he said.

Mary Quinn, who lives next door to the Hunters, said the same.

Firefighters save home on MCR 29

Ursula “was always really friendly,” said Quinn, 33.

“She was very, very generous,” and was “always offering whatever she could, mostly vegetables out of her garden.”

The Hunters were retired, Quinn said, and didn’t leave their home often.

Quinn and her husband, Danny, did what they could to help the Hunters, she said, and the Hunters responded in kind. “(They) watched out for us as we tried to watch out for them,” she said.

On Tuesday night, Quinn stepped outside her home and saw smoke and flames billowing from the Hunter’s house.

An ambulance crew was preparing to take Patrick to the hospital, but it was unknown whether Ursula had made it to safety.

After the Quinns rushed their three daughters to a neighbor’s house across the street and did what they could to protect their property, they waited to hear news if Ursula had escaped the flames.

The good news they were hoping for never came.

“We were really sad last night,” Quinn said, “and (are) still sad.”

Craig Fire/Rescue firefighters responded to a two-story home fire at approximately 7 a.m.

Tuesday at 5501 Moffat County Road 29.

It was the first of three structure fire calls Tuesday for a total of four fires in less than 24 hours for the department and its firefighters.

The home, located 13 miles east of Craig, belongs to Moffat County residents Bill and Ruth Anne Greenwood.

The fire was first seen by a school bus driver picking up the Greenwood’s grandchildren.

The driver noticed smoke rising from the building’s roof.

A wood stove with a faulty exhaust system caused the fire, which began in the ceiling of a second-story bedroom where the smoke pipe exits through the roof, officials said.

Firefighters, Moffat County Sheriff ’s Office deputies, the Red Cross, Moffat County Victim’s Advocates and The Memorial Hospital in Craig EMS responded to the call.

Moffat County Sheriff Tim Jantz was the first on the scene.

After ensuring the safety of the Greenwood family and their pets, Jantz began radioing directions to firefighters.

Firefighters were successful in confining damage to the second-story bedroom and the section of the roof where the fire began.

THANK YOU CRAIG FIRE/RESCUE

To the editor: We wish to offer our heartfelt thank you to Craig Fire/Rescue for their fast response, considering we live 13 miles from town, and for their professional and caring actions in fighting the fire in our roof.

When we discovered smoke coming from under the roof and made a 911 call, Moffat County Sheriff Tim Jantz arrived first and made sure family and pets were out of the house and was radioing directions to fire crews.

We so appreciate the effort they made to protect possessions and minimize damage by flames, smoke and water, containing the fire to the bedroom.

KC Hume and Bill Johnston kept us informed several times as to progress of the fire crews inside our house.

Offers of help by the Red Cross and victim advocates were appreciated as well. We also appreciate the attentiveness of the school bus driver, Casey, who noticed the unusual smoke and informed our grandsons as they got on the bus, at which time Sheldon was able to call our son and alert him something here was amiss.

The Craig community is so fortunate to have dedicated volunteers with exceptional training and equipment who are willing and able to provide their services.

We are so grateful to be in our home tonight because of their efforts.

No surprises, please

W

hen I hear about surprise parties, I experience vague feelings of dread, shortness of breath and hives.

It’s the surprise that alarms me, not the party.

I like celebrating important events with friends and family members.

Janet Sheridan But what’s to enjoy about normally dignified people yelling “surprise!” and leaping from drapes and houseplants, while I stand agape, wishing I’d brushed my teeth?

When surprised, I’d like to respond with a ladylike exclamation of astonishment and glee before trilling, “Thank you. Oh, thank you so much!”

I’d like to work my way around the room, hugging and cooing, with appreciative tears making my eyes glisten fetchingly.

But I can’t.

Instead, I squeak and squeal and turn redder than Rudolph’s nose.

The only thing worse than being surprised by a group of party animals is knowing their plan in advance. This happened to me on my 30th birthday when coworkers arranged a surprise party for me at a local restaurant.

As a friend left work one afternoon, she poked her head into my room and called, “Bye, Janet. See you tonight at the Mint!”

Her horrified expression as

she realized what she’d said aroused my suspicions, and her attempted cover-up verified them: “No, I mean…see you soon! Like tomorrow! For a minute!”

I went home, stood before a mirror, and tried to act surprised.

I’m no Meryl Streep.

I think my dislike of parties involving surprises started when I was in first grade.

During reading group, we read a Dick-and-Jane story in which Mother, Father, Dick and Baby Sally surprised Jane by hiding her birthday presents. They then cheered, laughed and gave useful hints — Spot barking along merrily — while clever Jane found her presents, each and every one.

That night, I mentioned the story to my family at dinner.

A few weeks later on my birthday, I blearily entered the kitchen, trailing the school clothes I’d pull on in front of the heater. Without warning, annoying cries of “Surprise!” and “We hid your presents; you have to find them!” assailed my fogged brain.

For several minutes I dutifully wandered around in a confused stupor, finding nothing, as my family indulged in teasing and merriment devoid of helpful hints.

I burst into tears and said I hated all of them. How gracious.

But my real problem with surprise parties is the celebrant’s inability to anticipate them.

Anticipation can be the best part of an experience: a Caribbean cruise, the arrival of a sweater ordered from a catalogue, a new haircut. As we

look forward to these events, we picture perfection, not flies in the ointment.

Then seasickness confines us to our cabin on captain’s night; the new sweater verifies our weight gain and the asymmetrical haircut makes us look strangely lop-sided.

A few year’s ago, Joel’s large family planned a surprise party for a beloved aunt’s 80th birthday.

Folks assembled from near and far in a lodge at an Illinois state park to pay tribute to Aunt Rene, a dynamic lady with a cloud of white hair and a cascading laugh that felt like a reward.

We parked in a distant lot, corralled rambunctious children in the lobby and checked the time compulsively. Finally, she entered, arm-in-arm with the niece who lured her there for lunch.

“Surprise!” 40 voices boomed.

We thought we’d killed her.

She gasped, faltered, clutched her chest, had to sit down. Several minutes passed before she regained her equanimity.

Later she asked, “Why didn’t you tell me you were planning a party for me and everyone was coming? I would have anticipated it for weeks: planning what to wear, getting my hair done, and looking forward to seeing everybody.”

After that, Joel and I vowed we’d never take part in planning a surprise party for one another.

We don’t want to make our exit gasping and flapping in a balloon-decorated room full of loved ones wearing party hats.

To the editor: First of all, I would like to thank all the local candidates who were present at the tea party meeting Feb. 2.

All of them expressed the importance of honesty, integrity, commitment and excellence needed for someone to represent our community. These are all very important core values, and I believe all of these people are sincere and have something to offer Moffat County.

Energy is a major factor in the economic future of this area. We also need to focus on ways to diversify our economy.

One way to do that is to offer some sort of incentive for businesses to come here.

Many other communities have done so and continue to do so. Many of them offer discounted costs on infrastructure or tax breaks to attract new businesses. Infrastructure costs will be made up over time by revenues new businesses bring to the community. If costs are too high, they will go where incentives are offered. If they are charged too much for infrastructure, landscaping or other restrictions, which increase their cost to do business here, they will not come.

We have empty commercial buildings here. We have a mall that is nearly empty and losing business all the time. And we have a railhead not being used to its full potential.

Therefore we have opportunities that could benefit new businesses. In an economy where money is hard to come by, everyone is looking for ways to cut costs and generate revenue.

General contractors sub contract out a lot of their work.

In the future, why can’t we require them to use local contractors whenever possible? We have people in construction trades out of work or doing other jobs to get a paycheck.

We have a plumber doing security at our hospital, and in another case have a plumber working in a local restaurant.

There are things that can be done to stimulate our local economy.

We have local boards working on things like economic development and doing a good job.

We all need to work together toward these goals.

In the coming elections, we should consider people who have new ideas that will benefit the community. Many times people vote for old friends and neighbors, which is fine but often limits input to more of the same ideas.

Without diversity, we will continue with the boom and bust cycle. Even with term limits, it’s easy to keep re-electing the same people. Sometimes that’s also because other people don’t have time to make the commitment to public office.

Everyone has an opinion but not everyone will take a stand or get involved when it comes to making changes.

CAUCUS: Hume: Number of registered Republicans has increased since 2010 scheduled to take place at Sandrock Elementary School.

The total number of delegates the county is allowed to elect increased this year to 94, four more than the 2010 caucuses.

Hume believes the increase in delegates is a good sign for local members because the number of delegates a precinct can elect is based off 2 percent of the total number of registered Republicans in that precinct.

“In other words, the fact that we have four more delegates overall than two years ago means we have more registered Republicans now than we did in 2010,” Hume said. “I think that is good news for the county.”

The 2-percent formula is applied to all 12 Moffat County precincts, meaning certain precincts are permitted more delegates than others.

For example, Precinct 9 Republicans elected nine del-

egates to the county assembly.

Precinct 1 filled 19 slots.

The names and final results of those elections were not available, said Hume, who is processing that information.

In addition to electing delegates to the county assembly, precinct goers took part in a nonbinding, statewide presidential preference poll.

According to the Colorado Republican Party website, Rick Santorum carried the state, garnering support from 26,614 voters, or 40.31 percent, out of a total of 66,027 voters.

Mitt Romney came in second with 23,012 votes, or 34.85 percent. Newt Gingrich came in third followed by Ron Paul, who netted 8,445 and 7,759 votes, respectively.

Despite losing the statewide “straw” poll, Romney received good support from Northwest Colorado Republicans, carrying Moffat, Routt, Rio Blanco, Garfield, Pitkin, Eagle, Summit

and Jackson counties, receiving an average of 42.17 percent of the votes.

About 218 of those Northwest Colorado votes were tallied in Moffat County. Romney received 122 of them, or 43.26 percent. Santorum picked up 87, or 30.85 percent.

Paul came in third with 42 votes, 14.89 percent, followed

by Gingrich with 29, or 10.28 percent.

Romney was also the popular choice among voters in Denver, Douglas, Boulder, Clear Creek, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Jefferson, Alamosa and Conejos counties.

Chuck Grobe, a member of Precinct 9 and a candidate for the county commission’s District 2 seat, attributes Romney’s support in Northwest Colorado to hardline Republican values.

Danner, who said she hasn’t yet decided on a presidential candidate, doesn’t put a lot of stock in the preference poll, considering it’s just a general feeling of where the state currently stands.

“Romney is certainly a viable candidate,” Danner said. “But it was a nonbinding vote and although it gives us an idea of where we’re heading, we’re a long ways from November.”

Gingrich netted one county victory, edging out Santorum 25 votes to 22 in Bent County.

Paul was unable to carry the majority in any of Colorado’s 64 counties.

Naming God

There was a giant leap forward in the history of thought when Copernicus showed why it’s reasonable to believe the Sun is the center of our system and Earth moves around that center.

Revolutionary.

That moment was like harnessing electricity, a turning point that profoundly affected humanity.

Are there momentous advances in the history of thought about God? The ancient Mediterranean world was populated by diverse people with a lot of different ideas about gods.

The Egyptians had Ra, Horus, and Anubis. The Babylonians had Marduk, the Greeks Zeus,

and the Scandinavians Thor, to name a few.

Different gods had powers over different things like the sun, moon, rivers, war, and various cultures. A moment of revolution happened on the road where these people met.

The time is hard to pinpoint, but we still have the idea. The people there were called “Israel,” and by at least 300 B.C., and probably earlier, they were talking about God in an absolutely revolutionary way.

Their genius came from using two titles for the divine.

The first title is Elohim. This word is plural and translates to something like “the Things that are above.” It’s a word that was borrowed from another ancient culture who called their favorite

god “El” (“above”) and their collection of gods “Elohim,” but Israel took the word and changed its meaning. Israel, unlike everyone else, had only one god, so when they called their god “Elohim,” it was saying their one god has the power and greatness of all gods combined.

Israel’s one God, they thought, was the power behind the stars, rivers, time, all people, everything.

You can see that “Elohim” used this way is not really a name after all.

It’s a way of saying the Great Mystery, which is The Source of everything and keeps it all going, is not many gods, but one God with lots of creativity.

That is a very momentous teaching, but not unique. Native Americans talked about a “Great

Spirit,” the Hindus and Buddhists had concepts of a great Unity, and Socrates was killed for mocking the Greek statues.

However, there’s more.

The second title is YHWH. When Moses asks the mysterious revelation in a bush who this god was that was speaking to him, the answer was YHWH. The title is, once again, not a name. It means “I Am” or various similar possibilities. Then this “I Am,” who doesn’t want to be named, adds, “I am the God of your fathers,” and tells Moses to get Pharaoh to let His people go.

You know the story.

Here’s why it’s amazing and novel: When other cultures moved away from thinking of many gods behind the mysteries of the

Therefore the question we should ask ourselves as we decide whether to drink any alcohol or not is this: Do today’s alcoholic drinks offend or make others weak? Yes, they do – and they do much more! How about all those in our community who have died in the last ten years as the result of the use of alcohol? The only totally safe way is to never touch the stuff. You will save yourself and your loved ones a whole lot of trouble. Even more convincing is this: who wants to deliberately sin against Jesus Christ?

The Unity of all for Hindus, Buddhists, Deists, and New Age cannot be known, but is an impersonal It, like Energy from which all things come and to which they return. Israel’s God is the One Source and is someone, a God who can be known, and even better, loved.

Not a man or woman in the sky, or a life-force, but a personal, spiritual Creator who has plans for the world. Elohim and YHWH come together to form a brilliant, new concept of God. That’s genius.

Now, what if that same God would take on flesh and dwell among us? That would be super revolutionary. What might a good name be?

“We have had a lack of rebounding lately and (Delta) has some athletic big guys, so we have to lock down and limit their offensive rebounds,” he said. “We need to be patient and not get into a running game with them.

Hamilton said good teams make runs, but his players need to keep their heads up when it happens.

“Really good teams like Delta, runs will happen, but we can’t let it get out of control,” he said. “We will have to get a defensive stop, and then make use of a couple of good offensive possessions and make a run of our own.”

Chamber, VFW consider Marcia Car’s future Daily Press writer

There was a time when Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4265 was a nonprofit member of the Craig Chamber of Commerce.

The VFW’s membership in the economic development organization ended in 2008.

VFW Quartermaster Larry Neu said the relationship between the two organizations dissolved when the VFW provided free chili to hunters, but were not permitted to pass out coupons for the VFW’s restaurant.

VFW members decided to end the Chamber membership.

The Marcia Car sits on a piece of property owned by the VFW. It had been lumped into past leases between the City of Craig and VFW for Craig City Park since 1958.

The Marcia Car has resided in the same spot rent-free since, Neu said.

Recently, the VFW decided to remove the Marcia Car from any potential park agreements and work with each entity individually.

Arch Coal earnings

Arch Coal’s fourth-quarter earnings are expected to match what the company earned a year ago. Investors want to see if the company’s shipments fell as they did the second and third quarters. And they’ll want to hear the company’s forecast.

Some electrical utilities are switching to natural gas from coal because the price of gas has fallen to 10-year lows and is expected to remain in a slump.

Consumers have been growing more pessimistic about the economy despite signs of improvement like the falling unemployment rate. We’ll find out today how they’re feeling this month, when the first February reading of the Thomson Reuters/ University of Michigan consumer sentiment index is released. Economists are expecting a slight drop in the index. There’ll be a final reading in two weeks.

Although the rent idea didn’t gain traction, the Chamber board members expressed interest in discussing a mutually beneficial resolution if VFW members were up to it.

“That’s why we’re here to open this up to discussions,” Neu said.

“We’re not here to serve an eviction notice or anything.”

Board members asked for time to mull ideas. The topic will be on the March 9 meeting agenda.

Dear Annie: My wife, “Jane,” and I have been married for five years, and she is the love of my life. She has an identical twin sister named “Jordan.”

The two ANNIE’S women are best MAILBOX friends. Jordan is at our house four or five times a week, but does not impose on our marriage. She is a great sister-inlaw and gives us our space.

Jane has an 8-year-old son from a previous relationship Kathy and Marcy whose middle name is also Jordan, after his aunt. I’ve watched the boy grow up and have gotten to know him well over the past several years. I love him as if he were my own.

Recently, Jane discovered she is pregnant with our first child.

Naturally, I’m thrilled.

However, despite my objections, she is determined to name the child Jordan, regardless of gender. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t care, because Aunt Jordan is a good role model.

But there are already two people in the family who have that name.

Am I right, or should I be more sensitive to my wife’s wishes?

— Steve in Ohio Dear Steve: You need to be sensitive to hers, but she also needs to be sensitive to yours.

Ask her to compromise. Point

out how confusing it could be if both your child and Aunt Jordan are in the same room.

And some children are highly sensitive to being named for a relative of the opposite sex.

You also can agree wholeheartedly to have it as a less-used middle name instead.

But if your attempts prove futile, it may not be worth the damage a protracted argument would cause. Children somehow manage to grow up just fine in families where multiple people are named for the same relative. And if the confusion is too great, you can call your child by a nickname.

Dear Annie: Like “Unhappy Husband,” I am confused and disappointed that my wife enjoys sex but will not initiate it. I would feel happier if I knew she was sexually attracted to me. This may sound silly, but it isn’t simply the act of sex that is important. It’s the feeling of connectedness and the belief that she wants to be emotionally joined to me.

It’s particularly discouraging when she says, “Do we have to do it now?” What man is going to say he needs sex? I feel rejected. On those occasions when she changes her mind, she will say, “I suppose we can have sex now.” This is not exciting, supportive or romantic.

Despite the program being relatively new, King said head coach Paul Brown helped cement his decision.

Brown played golf at Fruita Monument High School and the University of Arizona, along with winning the Colorado West Amateur Champion 13 times.

“The coaches are really good players, so they know what they are doing,” King said. “(Brown) doesn’t like to mess with swings because if we are playing in college, we will have a good one. It is more of the little things, like being strong mentally and course management, that he will help me with.”

King said he has always wanted to pursue sports at the next level, but golf wasn’t his first option.

He played in numerous junior golf tournaments from second to fifth grade, learning a lot about the game from Chuck Cobb, a former Yampa Valley Golf Course professional.

der started hurting from playing baseball, so I went back to golf in the eighth grade.

“Thankfully, my shoulder didn’t

bother me in golf after strengthening my rotator cuff.”

When he came back to golf, King said he was averaging around 93 strokes per round.

While he learned a lot from former MCHS boys golf coach Ken Harjes, King said he also learned from Annie Marie Roberts, who coaches the MCHS girls golf team and was an assistant golf professional at the golf course.

“I was shooting under 100 when I got back into golf, but not consistently,” he said. “I started working with Ann Marie, and I

dropped strokes every year and continued to get better.

“If I hadn’t worked with Ann Marie, I probably wouldn’t be playing Division II golf.”

King said he expects the biggest difference when playing college golf compared to high school golf will be consistency among the players.

“I think all of the competition is going to be good where as in high school you might have to wait to take your second shot while another player takes their fourth or fifth shot,” he said. “There is going to be more competition through the whole field, and I think that is going to allow me to be more focused on my shots instead of analyzing too much while I wait.”

King will major in business management while at CMU with hopes of working for a golf course or golf company in the future.

But, he said the business side of golf would come after his playing days.

“When I started playing golf in my freshman year, I decided I wanted to continue on the rest of my life,” King said. “I want to work in the golf business, but ultimately my goal is to play.”

In fact, she’s a packing machine! She has also worked cattle and has been taken to gymkhanas.She’s good with flags and is solid with noises. Has been ridden Western mostly, but goes nicely under English.

A confident kid/teen that knows how to ride would like her. Great 4-H prospect.

We have put a nice solid foundation on her and she’s young enough that someone can build them a nice horse.

We rescued her out of a neglect situation when she was young. We suspect there may have been some abuse as she can be a little head shy at times. She would make a great brood mare and she loves people. Price will go up as she becomes more seasoned. She will go to a good home only, she’s our pet.

The Moffat County High School girls varsity basketball team scored 12 points in the second half on Jan. 20 against Delta while falling, 54-39, at home.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs two games behind Delta in the Western Slope League race and forced Moffat County to rely on another league team to trip the Panthers up.

On Saturday, Glenwood Springs went into Delta and left with a 56-48 win to hand the Panthers their first WSL loss.

Now, the Bulldogs have a chance Friday to go to Delta and pull even with the Panthers if they can score a road victory.

Ray said what happen in the second half of the first game is something the team has worked on and he doesn’t foresee it happening again.

“It comes down to playing a complete game and knowing every quarter you are playing your best,” he said. “There are going to be errors here and there by both teams and both teams will put together a run, but we need to play even keel in every quarter. If (Delta) gets a run, we can’t panic and need to keep up our confidence.”

Junior Skylyn Webb led Delta (16-3 overall, 8-1 WSL) in the last game against the Bulldogs, going off for 26 points.

Ray said Webb likes to penetrate inside first, and his girls need to take that away.

“We need to make (Webb’s) first option to shoot outside instead of driving inside,” he said. “With us, it is always an in-your-face type of defense, but with (Webb) we will have to do the opposite to keep her outside.”

Ultimately, Ray said the key to the game could come down to playing sound defense.

“We have to have a teamdefense philosophy and take away (Webb) and their post players without letting someone else go off on us,” he said. “If we can do that and be patient on offense, I think we can control the tempo of the game.”

MCHS boys basketball sets sights on road upset The MCHS boys varsity basketball team’s victory Tuesday over Basalt marked the first time this season the Bulldogs have won back-to-back games.

Parker King was 2 years old when he was first introduced to golf.

In his grandparents’ backyard, King was swinging away at plastic wiffle balls with all his might.

King has come a long way since then, qualifying for the 4A state tournament in his junior year and averaging a score of around 77 this season as a senior at Moffat County High School.

Now, King has made the decision to play for the Colorado Mesa University men’s golf team beginning in the fall.

“I didn’t just choose (CMU) because it was close, but because the program is really good,” King said Thursday. “The coaches want to be the best and want to get the best out of the players.

“When I looked at the team in the fall, they weren’t the best in their conference, but they had the potential. I think I can go in there and be one of the best players on the team.”

The men’s golf program at CMU started only two years ago, so no scholarships are being offered at this time.
