After 11 months of planning, more than $150,000 in fundraising and soliciting help from hundreds of local volunteers, the inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge finally arrives in Steamboat Springs today. The professional bicycle race featuring some of the best riders in the world is only part of the attraction today and Saturday. Accompanying the race is an hours-long expo on a closeddown Lincoln Avenue, a Free Summer Concert Series performance at Howelsen Hill, a downtown fireworks display, a handcycle race, and more. Road closures, detours, limited parking and crowds will be part of the festival-like atmosphere in Steamboat during the next 36 hours. From today’s sprint to the finish at Sixth Street and Lincoln Avenue to Saturday’s spectatorlined climb up Rabbit Ears Pass, the Pro Cycling Challenge brings the flavor of the Tour de France to the Colorado Rockies. It also brings international exposure and a live race telecast.
