Celebrating direct-impact services United Way honors its community of supporters at awards reception

CRAIG — Supporters of Moffat County United Way gathered at Colorado Northwestern Community College on Thursday evening for an awards and celebration reception to honor 20 of its major company supporters.

United Way supporters, staff and board members were also present to honor outgoing executive director Corrie Ponikvar, who has served the organization for 18 years. She teared up as she offered some of her final words as the organization’s leader.

“This is the hardest thing,

saying goodbye to all the hardworking people and organizations who make this community a better place to live,” Ponikvar said.

Xcel Energy and its employees were honored for being the 2015 pacesetter, helping United Way to kick off its campaign by raising $57,802. Of that total, $34,000 will be allocated to Moffat County agencies, Vice President of the United Way board Jennifer Riley said as she presented the award.

“United Way’s fundraising success is driven by the payroll deduction program and matching gifts from employers,” Ponikvar said.

Also honored were new United Way Executive Director Amanda Arnold and new community impact coordinator Aspen Matthews. Ponikvar said she was reassured to be leaving the organization in such good hands.

Several local agencies that receive support from United Way were also in attendance to share their gratitude.

Among them was Craig Thornhill, program director for Mind Springs Health in Craig, which receives financial support for its indigent care program from United Way. Thornhill estimated that over 1,000 people have been provided with mental health care

services through the program since 2006.

“We provide direct-impact services and without the funding from United Way we would not be able to provide to those who can’t pay,” Thornhill said.

Special recognition was given to the Christmas for Kids program at the conclusion of the event, headed up by Amber Kawcak with help from her daughter, Afton Kawcak and mother, Julie Hanna. Kawcak is stepping down from the organization after playing Santa to countless Moffat County families in need for nine years. Betsy Overton with Connections 4 Kids has agreed to fill Kawcak’s shoes.

CRAIG — Two Moffat County officers came alarmingly close to losing their lives when two suspects held them hostage, put guns to their heads and forced them to their knees in Northwest Colorado on Monday, according to court documents.

What began as a suspicious vehicle Georgie Hand check led to both officers being disarmed and held at gunpoint, and ended in the shooting death of suspect James Brent Damon about 10 miles James Damon east of the UtahColorado border on U.S. Highway 40 in Moffat County.

Moffat County Sheriff ’s Deputy Bhrent Shock and Colorado Parks and Wildlife District Manager Nathan Martinez, of Rangely, were the officers involved in the incident.

Martinez was in the area Monday afternoon when he heard that Shock was working on a suspicious vehicle check.

He arrived to assist Shock in looking for the occupants of a white Ford Explorer that was damaged off the side of U.S. 40.

Martinez’s dog was the first to notice Hand and Damon and began barking, which drew the officer’s attention to the pair sitting on the hillside.

The couple — who had been together for 14 years and were en route to Utah from Mississippi, according to Young’s account — had spent the night in the white Ford, which was inoperable.

They were awaiting help from Damon’s friend in Utah.

What Martinez didn’t know when he approached the individuals was that Damon had slipped a semi-automatic 9 mm handgun into his holster as the officer approached, according to the affidavit.

Damon had purchased the gun from an unknown individual in Denver.

“Officer Martinez asked them about a box of ammunition that was visible to him,” Young’s account said. “Officer Martinez asked them if they were OK and what happened because he

had seen the damage to their vehicle.”

Winters’ account said, “During this encounter …

Damon pulled a semi-automatic handgun on Officer Martinez and stuck the gun to his head.

Damon told Officer Martinez not to move or he was going to ‘blow his f------ head off.’”

Damon and Hand then disarmed Martinez and made him throw his radio to the ground.

“Damon asked officer Martinez, ‘How do we get out of this, how does everybody walk away alive?’” Young’s account said.

Following a short discussion, the three walked down the hill to Shock. When they reached him, Damon immediately pointed a gun at his face and ordered him to the ground, according to the affidavit.

Damon removed Shock’s duty weapon, radio, taser and other items. One account details that Damon then handcuffed Shock’s right hand to his duty belt, while another indicates that he initially tried to do so and then told Hand to handcuff his arms.

“Hand said she made it look like to Damon that she couldn’t get the second handcuff on Deputy Shock’s arm.

(Young) asked Hand why she did that. Hand said, ‘Because we shouldn’t have been doing what we were doing,’” stated the affidavit.

Martinez told the couple to

take his car, and Hand left to get his vehicle. Damon ordered Martinez and Shock to their knees behind the Ford.

“At this point, Officer Martinez knew they were going to die, but he wasn’t going to die without a fight,” Winters’ account said.

Damon had the officers’ guns in both hands, and Martinez made the decision to disarm Damon and get his handgun back.

Following a brief struggle, Martinez was able to retrieve his gun and fired one round into the back of Damon’s head.

Martinez ordered Hand to drop the gun still in her hand.

She was then arrested.

Hand was taken Monday evening to Rangely District Hospital for complaints unrelated to the shooting, Moffat County Sheriff KC Hume said.

She was booked into the Moffat County Jail in Craig on Tuesday.

She was charged Thursday with committing two counts of attempted first-degree murder, four counts of second-degree kidnapping, four counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of disarming a peace officer, two counts of felony menacing, one count of second-degree trespass-agricultural land and one count of possession of weapon by a previous offender.

The Moffat County Court ordered Hand be held without bond until a combined proof evident hearing and preliminary hearing is held at 9 a.m. April 22. The outcome of the proof evident hearing will determine if she is eligible to be released on bond.

“We believe she is a danger to society,” said 14th Judicial District Attorney Brett Barkey at her initial bond hearing Wednesday. “She is clearly a

flight risk. She has no ties to this community.”

Both Hand and Damon have warrants out for their arrest in Colorado, Mississippi and Utah. The affidavit also revealed that both Hand and Damon were regular methamphetamine users.

City council, mayoral candidates quizzed during forum

CRAIG — On Thursday night, Craig voters got a glimpse at the people who aspire to serve them in local government, as well as what each of them brings to the table.

The seven candidates for Craig City Council and the two candidates for Craig’s mayor convened at the Center of Craig for a forum hosted by the Bear Ears Tea Party Patriots.

Those present included Joe Bird and Kent Nielson, the only incumbents for council positions, as well as Liane DavisKling, Derek Duran, Marilynn Hill, Matt Winey and John Ponikvar. The two mayoral candidates are current councilors Ray Beck and Don Jones.

One of Jones’ talking points was his previous tenure as mayor, which included being in office during Craig’s centennial in 2008.

“I enjoyed serving, and I want to serve again,” he said.

Many of the questions from the crowd focused on the city’s role in economic development and the prospect of tax breaks as business incentives, the latter of which nearly all those on the panel opposed, some more vehemently than others.

Ponikvar said he believed there are many better options

for bringing in outside commerce than tax breaks, and “making the community more attractive” for businesses should be the priority.

The subject of “leakage” of shoppers for many goods and services was also mentioned by audience member and resident Ken Wergin.

Hill agreed that losing local money to both the Internet and larger cities is a continuing concern, and she was alarmed to see statistics from Yampa Valley Data Partners showing that Craig’s restaurants lost more than $1 million to sites outside the city.

“It’s a really big deal,” she said.

A mention of a hypothetical sales tax increase was brought forth by the crowd, most candidates stating that it would depend on the conditions.

Several, including Davis-Kling, Jones, Beck and Duran said in their response it would have to be left up to the voters.

Duran said it was a “yes and no” type of situation because with the population on board, more tax revenue could turn out positive.

“It’s time that Craig invests in Craig,” he said.

Glenda Bellio posed the question of how to combat apathy among people in Craig and to shake the idea that “there’s

“Why the people who live in the city can’t be concerned enough to get down here and see who these people are is sad,”

Though she felt there was not much of an answer to her question, overall Bellio thought each of the candidates provided a good discourse and offered many valid opinions.

“It gave me a better idea of how they think and where they go,” she said.

in who gets elected via ballot, but the impact of the city election is one she said will reach the whole area.

“The decisions they make affect me as greatly as the people in the community,” she said.

RIDGWAY — Boating season starts today at Ridgway State Park when the boat ramp opens at 8 a.m., according to a press release.

The Aquatic Nuisance Species inspection station also opens and inspectors will be available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day until next fall. Boaters are reminded that they must have their boats inspected before launching. Boats should arrive at the inspection station clean, drained and dry.

Life jacket regulations apply to all water craft, including paddle boards, kayaks and windsurfers.

Parks and Wildlife to conduct land audits Colorado Parks and Wildlife will be conducting an audit of registered properties in the Landowner Preference Program, formerly the Priority Landowner Preference Program, in 2015, according to a news release.

CRAIG — Craig lost one of its most joyful residents last week, Bob Johnson.

Bob was well liked and well known throughout Moffat County, and his smiles, warm demeanor and inquisitive spirit will be greatly missed. He passed away quietly in his home March 6.

He was avid skier and an active mountain man who loved to talk about his time on the slopes.

“He’d come home, and he’d always tell me about the people he met on the lifts,” said his wife of 37 years, Dee Johnson.

His family held a reception Wednesday at the Center of Craig, and they placed his ski passes from years past on each table, signifying his love for alpine skiing.

Words like “integrity,” “hard work” and “dedication” circulated the reception, where attendees stood up and spoke about how Bob positively influenced their lives.

Those who knew Bob could always count on a welcoming smile and gentle handshake each time they saw him.

“He loved people,” said his daughter Katie Lamach. “That’s one of the reasons he loved his job.”

Bob ran State Farm insurance agency in Craig, always putting his clients’ best interests first.

Bob and Dee have three children: Katie (Nick) Lamach, 34, Matt (Lynne) Johnson, 37 and Alex (Kelly) Johnson, 30. They also have four grandchildren: twins Harper and Ryligh, 1; Olivia, 5, and Maizie, 2.

“He really loved his family,” Katie said, highlighting also how much he enjoyed being a grandfather.

Born in Canton, Ohio, Bob always wanted to live in Colorado. He met his wife while working at May D&F in Denver.

Dee worked in the portrait studio, and Bob worked as a custodian.

“He had to go past my booth

everyday,” Dee said, noting that he brought film canisters to the studio to be developed even though he knew that they only took photos and didn’t develop film.

Bob was a State Farm agent in Aurora for 20 years, prior to moving to Craig. He was excited to move to Northwest Colorado because of the western, cowboy feel. Mostly, he was thrilled to move closer to the mountains.

“He loved adventure,” his son Matt said. “He never wasted the day.”

He worked six days per week and spent his Sundays with his family and/or in the mountains.

“Every weekend, it was a get away,” his youngest son Alex said.

Recently, Bob accomplished a huge success by raising awareness about teen safety and driving with Celebrate My Drive, sponsored by State Farm.

The campaign earned Moffat County High School $25,000, and Bob was instrumental in that success.

“I think it’s wonderful. I think it’s… an exciting achievement for Moffat County High School,” Bob told the Craig Daily Press in December.

He was an active member in Craig Rotary, a member of the Craig Chamber of Commerce board, actively involved in Club 20 and was part of the Commission of Judicial Performance.

Overall, he was an extremely happy man, his children said.

GOP working to undercut Obama

You’ve seen the letter by now, or at least heard about it, the one sent from the GOP’s Tehran 47 to the Iranian mullahs.

The one signed by 47 Republican senators, including McConnell and Paul and Cruz and Rubio Mike Littwin and our own Cory Gardner.

The one designed to undercut/sabotage/debase the president of the United States in the eyes of our longstanding enemies, not to mention our closest allies, even as the Obama administration nears the end game in negotiating a nuclear deal with Iran.

The one that is pretty much unprecedented — you know, in the way that inviting a foreign head of state to rip Obama in a joint session of Congress was pretty much unprecedented.

The one that basically says to the Ayatollah, look, do what you need to do, just don’t give an inch to Obama, because, after all, we never would.

The one that purports to be a constitutional advisory that (according to Harvard law professor Jack Goldsmith) gets a major chunk of the constitutional part wrong.

The one that goes out of its way to talk down to the Iranians, who, the signatories worry, aren’t sharp enough to understand the Constitution but who are apparently smart enough to make a bunch of nuclear weapons and the missiles to deliver them.

Yeah, that letter.

Read it again, and then ask yourself this question: Who do you think these senators have humiliated, Obama or themselves?

Let’s give the 47ers the benefit of the doubt. Let’s say that the letter just looks like a demented attempt for Republican senators to ally themselves with Iranian hard-liners in order to deal Obama

a defeat, but is in actuality a desperate attempt to save America from what they think is a terrible deal (one that that would, if it works, possibly ensure that Iran doesn’t get a bomb for at least the next 10 or 15 years).

If we concede all that — and I wouldn’t, but I’m ready to listen to the argument — it still looks like a disaster for the Republicans.

As Brian Beutler argues in the New Republic, if the Iranians were to take the letter seriously — which is unlikely, but, again, let’s concede the point for now — they would be more inclined to make a deal immediately, rather than holding out for something better. Because, according to the letter, nothing better is ever coming.

In other words: If Iran’s leaders ever want to get paid off for not making a bomb, they should take the deal as offered. I don’t think John Kerry could put it any better.

One of America’s leading political scientists, Robert Putnam, has just come out with a book called “Our Kids” about the growing chasm between those who live in college-educated America and those who live in high-school-educated America.

It’s got a definitive collection of data about this David Brooks divide.

Roughly 10 percent of the children born to college grads grow up in single-parent households.

Nearly 70 percent of children born to high school grads do.

There are a bunch of charts that look like open scissors. In the 1960s or 1970s, college-educated and noncollege-educated families behaved roughly the same. But since then, behavior patterns have ever more sharply diverged.

High-school-educated parents dine with their children less than college-educated parents, read to them less, talk to them less, take them to church less, encourage them less and spend less time engaging in developmental activity.

Interspersed with these statistics, Putnam and his research team profile some of the representative figures from each social class. The profiles from highschool-educated America are familiar but horrific.

David’s mother was basically absent. “All her boyfriends have been nuts,” he said. “I never really got to see my mom that much.” His dad dropped out of school, dated several women with drug problems and is now in prison. David went to seven different elementary schools. He ended up under house arrest and got a girl pregnant before she left him for a drug addict.

Kayla’s mom married an abusive man but lost custody of their kids to him when they split. Her dad married a woman with a child but left her after it turned out the child was fathered by her abusive stepfather. Kayla grew up as one of five half-siblings from three relationships until her parents split again and coupled with others.

Elijah grew up in a violent neighborhood and saw a girl killed in a drive-by shooting when he was 4. He burned down a lady’s house when he was 13. He goes through periods marked by drugs, clubbing and sex but also dreams of being a preacher. “I just love beating up somebody,” he told a member of Putnam’s team, “and making See BROOKS on page 7

What’s curious is trying to decide what exactly the letter writers want the Iranians to do. I’m pretty sure they don’t actually want Iran to have the bomb, any more than I think they believe Obama wants Iran to have the bomb. But let’s break down the logic: If Iran doesn’t take the deal, the West imposes tougher sanctions. If the mullahs don’t want tougher sanctions, they make the deal. If they are prepared to live though tougher sanctions, though, their only possible payoff is

to build the bomb.

The letter makes clear, in case the Iranians misunderstand, that Obama is near the end of his term-limited two terms and that senators can be around forever (as if that were possibly a good thing). They actually explain the six-year and four-year thing like we were all back in Jeffco-approved AP U.S. History, wherein all the endings are happy, including the part about getting rid of Obama.

And then there’s the money paragraph: “(We) will consider any agreement regarding your

nuclear-weapons program that is not approved by Congress as nothing more than an executive agreement between President Obama and Ayatollah Khamenei. The next president could revoke such an executive agreement with the stroke of a pen and future Congresses could modify the terms of the agreement at any time.”

Yes, we’re back to executive authority and why this Congress never seems to have its way with Obama. But the Iranians should know that Obama will soon be gone, and then look out, because possible future President Bush/

Paul/Walker/Cruz/Rubio/ Huckabee/Christie/Carson/ etc./etc. will let them have it.

Except this argument doesn’t hold up any better than the previous arguments.

Let’s say Iran agrees to the deal with the United States and its negotiating partners.

Let’s say that Iran follows the terms of inspections because the Ayatollah has no other option.

Which future president, Republican or otherwise, is going to overturn that plan?

The only way this openletter threat would convince Iran not to take the deal is if Iran already plans to

definitions of how we should be behaving at all levels.

History is full of examples of moral revival, when social chaos was reversed, when behavior was tightened and norms reasserted. It happened in England in the 1830s and in the U.S. amid economic stress in the 1930s. It happens through organic communal effort, with voices from everywhere saying gently: This we praise. This we don’t.

Every parent loves his or her children. Everybody struggles.

But we need ideals and standards to guide the way.

they nose bleed and just hurting them and just beating them on the ground.”

The first response to these stats and to these profiles should be intense sympathy. We now have multiple generations of people caught in recurring feedback loops of economic stress and family breakdown, often leading to something approaching an anarchy of the intimate life.

But it’s increasingly clear that sympathy is not enough. It’s not only money and better policy that are missing in these circles; it’s norms. The health of society is primarily determined by the habits and virtues of its citizens.

In many parts of America there are no minimally agreed upon standards for what it means to be a father. There are no basic codes and rules woven into daily life, which people can absorb unconsciously and follow automatically.

Reintroducing norms will require, first, a moral vocabulary. These norms weren’t destroyed because of people with bad values. They were destroyed by a plague of nonjudgmentalism, which refused to assert that one way of behaving was better than another.

People got out of the habit of setting standards or understanding how they were set.

Next it will require holding people responsible. People born into the most chaotic situations can still be asked the same questions: Are you living for short-term pleasure or longterm good? Are you living for yourself or for your children?

Do you have the freedom of self-control or are you in bondage to your desires?

Next it will require holding everybody responsible. America is obviously not a country in which the less educated are behaving irresponsibly and the

more educated are beacons of virtue. America is a country in which privileged people suffer from their own characteristic forms of self-indulgence: the tendency to self-segregate, the comprehensive failures of leadership in government and industry. Social norms need repair up and down the scale, universally, together and all at once.

People sometimes wonder why I’ve taken this column in a spiritual and moral direction of late. It’s in part because we won’t have social repair unless we are more morally articulate, unless we have clearer

sabotage the deal.

And so we’re left with a clumsy anti-Obama scheme — one that leaves Republicans open to the charge that they’re undermining our foreign policy — that has provoked Democrats, confused our allies and amused the mullahs. If you don’t get the sick joke, just read this closing paragraph: “We hope this letter enriches your knowledge of our constitutional system and promotes mutual understanding and clarity as negotiations progress.”

I’d say it’s the most we could hope for.

Forecast calls for above average moisture, temperatures

Skiers and riders in Steamboat Springs were hoping this morning to wake up to the first fresh snowfall on the mountain in seven days after the first five days of the month delivered 20 inches.

The National Weather Service was calling for a 30 percent chance of rain showers and even thunderstorms in Steamboat primarily after 3 p.m. Thursday, followed by rain mixed with snow overnight. However, a forecast pegged to the 10,000 S&P 500 2,065.95

The Labor Department reports its producer price index for February today.

The index, which measures the prices that producers receive for their goods and services before they reach the consumer, fell 0.8 percent in January. That marked the index’s biggest drop in more than five years and its third monthly decline in a row, reflecting a steep drop in energy prices.

snow in February, and of those, 12 delivered two inches or more at mid-mountain. The greatest 24-hour snowfall was recorded Feb. 21 when 11 inches fell at mid-mountain. The greatest 24-hour snowfall this month was the nine inches that fell at mid-mountain March 4, translating into 15 inches at the summit of Storm Peak.

According to Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. records, average March snowfall is about 52 inches, and for the approximately two weeks of April that the ski area is open, the average is 19 inches.

MCHS hoops falls in state tourney

CRAIG — In their past few games, the members of the Moffat County High School girls varsity basketball team have crossed swords with pirates, exorcised demons and stared down a herd of buffalo, but they finally met their match when it came time to tame some lions.

The Lady Bulldogs were knocked out of championship contention in the Great 8 round of the 3A state playoffs, losing, 61-32, to Parker’s Lutheran High School in a Thursday afternoon game at Colorado School of Mines in Golden.

Lutheran, now 24-1, jumped in front quickly, as leading scorer Kaleigh Paplow and teammates went to work, ahead, 19-9, at the end of the first quarter, MCHS called for many fouls in the process.

The Moffat County crew wouldn’t be intimidated, however, and the second period saw them claw their way back, coming to within two points, 22-20, thanks to tenacious rebounding and careful shooting from Leah Camilletti, Morgan Lawton and Mattie Jo Duzik.

This was what should have been the turning point, coach Sam McLeod said.

made some really bad decisions at the end of the half,” he said.

The Lions roared back against the Bulldog bark to score eight unanswered points to make it 30-20.

Centauri, hailing from La Jara, handed MCHS’s Western Slope foes Olathe a 48-45 defeat in the Sweet 16 round before losing, 48-33, to Pagosa Springs Thursday.

With a win, Moffat County will head to a game Saturday morning that will determine the fifth- and sixth-place teams in the state.

“They’ve got to show what they can do, I don’t think today was indicative of how good they are and how they can finish,” McLeod said Thursday evening. “They’re ready to go out and play tomorrow.”

High school honors state-bound students CRAIG DAILY PRESS STAFF REPORT

CRAIG — The members of multiple Moffat County High School activities were the guests of honor at a pep assembly Wednesday in the MCHS gym, acknowledging those bound for state events.

Teachers, students and community members were part of the celebration sending off the MCHS girls varsity basketball team as they embark on the state tournament, beginning with Thursday’s game against Parker team Lutheran in the Great 8.

However, the athletes weren’t the only group to be highlighted.

Also on their way to state is the MCHS band, which earlier this

week learned it will be part of the highest level of competition in April following a Superior rating at a regional event hosted by Colorado Bandmasters Association.

Likewise, members of the school’s speech and debate team will also be bound for state after a highly successful season.

Wes Atkin will compete in the humorous interpretation event and Jake Stewart in national extemporaneous speaking during the meet March 20 and 21 at Douglas County High School.

The pair of McKenzie Aguire and Jessica Johnson also qualified for state in the duo event but will be unable to attend.

Resort operators unveil MAX Pass New option of five days of skiing offered at each of 22 resorts

Steamboat Ski Area parent company Intrawest Resorts announced Tuesday a new alliance with Powdr Corp. and Boyne Resorts that will allow skiers and snowboarders with an urge to travel the chance to purchase a M.A.X. Pass and spend five days at each of 22 mountains stretching from New England to Colorado and British Columbia.

The pass features no blackout dates and can be purchased for as little as $699 for adults during the 2015-16 season.

The acronym M.A.X. stands for Multi-Alpine Experience.

There is an up-charge rate for holders of season passes at participating resorts who want to add M.A.X. Pass privileges.

Prices go up May 1, but skiers can lock in the lowest price with a $49 down payment and the balance due in mid-September, according to a joint news release from the three participating resort operators.

Sales are online only at www. theMAXpass.com.

Intrawest CEO Tom Marano said he believes the M.A.X. Pass provides skiers with the flexibility to experience new ski areas while saving money compared to what they would spend to purchase day passes at several resorts.

“We joined forces with Boyne Resorts and Powdr to develop an innovative product that provides access to more incredible mountains in North America than any other pass in the market,” Marano was quoted saying in a prepared statement.

“Our goal is to provide our guests with a pass that provides maximum choice on when, where and how long they ski at a great value.”

Vail Resorts has also released its 2015-16 Epic Pass rates: $769 for adults and $399 for children with no blackout dates. They offer unlimited skiing at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and A-Basin; Park City, Utah; Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood in California; Afton Alps, Minnesota; and Mount Brighton, Michigan.

There is a schedule of descending prices for teens, children and younger children, both on full M.A.X. passes and add-ons to season passes.

In addition to Steamboat, Intrawest sibling Winter Park and nearby Powdr ski area Copper Mountain, some of the standout M.A.X. Pass destinations for skiers who look to the west include Boyne’s Big Sky Resort south of Bozeman, Montana, and Powdr’s Mount Bachelor in the Central Oregon Cascades.

Oklahoma football team condemns SAE racist video

NORMAN, OKLA. — A racist video threatened to divide the Oklahoma football team. The leaders on the squad weren’t having it.

Players released a statement on social media accounts Thursday, saying they were committed to eradicating racism and calling for the expulsion of fraternity leaders connected to the video.

“Allowing this culture to thrive goes against everything it means to be a Sooner,” said the players, who vowed to raise awareness of racism and show “we are defined by more than the numbers on our jerseys and that we are human beings that desire to get to know our classmates.”

A nine-second video caught members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s University of Oklahoma chapter singing a song that used a derogatory term for black people and referenced lynching.

After the initial outrage among the players, seven of the team’s leaders — Trevor Knight, Eric Striker, Ty Darlington, Charles Tapper, Nila Kasitati, Sterling Shepard and Zack Sanchez — listened to their teammates and leaders from other athletic teams on campus, then met among themselves over a three-day period to figure out how to proceed.

The racially diverse group created a unified statement about using their platforms to “promote meaningful change at a national level,” starting with their campus.

The team has not practiced all week, instead silently demonstrating by walking together arm-inarm and wearing black at Owen Field during its normal practice time. The players did so again Thursday afternoon with coach Bob Stoops front and center at the school of 27,000 students, about 5 percent of whom are black.

“It was initially, for everyone, an igniting issue, something that provoked a lot of feelings, as we’ve seen from all the reactions of it,” said Darlington, who is white. “It was no different on our team. We’re human beings. Every one of us had a lot of conflicting emotions. I think very quickly, we realized that whatever we do, we have to do it as a team, or else it was going to divide everyone.”

Two students have been expelled and university President David Boren ordered the chapter house to be shut down. Boren plans to meet with team captains after spring break, but the players haven’t waited to express their displeasure.

The players said they want SAE leadership “expelled, suspended or otherwise disciplined severely.”

Striker, whose angry Snapchat message in response to the video drew publicity, said he generally

feels good about his school.

“This is not a reflection of the people here in Oklahoma, at this university,” he said. “So many great people here — we can’t let a little speck ruin it for the whole state. That’s not been definitely our experience here at all. That was just ... for the majority of the people here, that is not a reflection on the people here, in this state and the university.”

Stoops didn’t take issue with Striker’s Snapchat message.

“Who am I, or who is anyone, to address someone’s level of reaction to something that can be so hurtful?” he said.

The situation already has hurt the football program, usually a national power. North Mesquite (Texas) High School football star Jean Delance, a top offensive lineman prospect who had verbally committed to Oklahoma, said he would not attend the school because of the video.

Two other verbal commitments from the Class of 2016, both black, will stay. JonMichael Terry, a tight end from Victory Christian High in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Adrian Hardy, a quarterback from Dekaney High in Houston, have not changed their plans.

Victory Christian football coach Brent Marley said he discussed the situation with Terry, and nothing changed.

Boren’s strong response played a role in keeping Hardy’s mother, Umeki Davis, from becoming concerned.

“As long as they (those leading the chant) were escorted off, and they have nothing to do with OU, and OU stood up for their kids — I’m OK with that,” Davis, said. “It would have been different if OU wouldn’t have stood up for what was right.

What was right to me was when they stood up and those students were removed from the school. I’m fine with that.”

The situation forced Knight, who is white, to look at race from a different perspective.

“For me, it’s an issue that, me personally, I won’t necessarily ever understand what it’s like to be called that name and the ramifications of it and how you feel in your heart,” he said. “But as a leadership group, and as a member of a team with all different walks of life, you have to take that into account, and you have to hear everybody with an open mind and realize that everybody’s going to be affected in a different way.

“So that was our main goal through all of this, is that we want what’s best for our group.

Not for individual people, not for whites, not for blacks, but for the entire group as a whole.”

Whatever happened to Ruby the wild mare?

Survival of the fittest and determination sums up the life of a wild horse or mustang as some choose to call them.

Sand Wash Basin in Northwest Colorado is home to one of the most renowned wild horse herds in America, maybe in the world. For most of the last year, the fans of multiple Facebook pages have asked the question “What happened to Ruby?”

Ruby is a small red filly that was separated last summer from her family at just about a month of age.

Watching this little red orphan trying to fit into another band, which was not allowed, became painful to many of us. For a short time a rescue was considered, as it seemed little Ruby was slowly starving to death. Her fragile, undeveloped digestive system was not equipped to be without her mother’s milk.

When Ruby met up with the amazing gentle giant Coal, a bachelor stallion he became

her protector and the hero to all who followed the news of Ruby. Often seen around Lake Draw Pond, it was the first place many of us would check on to see how she was getting along.

It was with great sorrow as we witnessed firsthand one day as her and Coal became separated. It was days before she was discovered again with him. As the summer wore on her thin little body just didn’t seem to be gaining much if any strength.

In September of last year, I saw Ruby for the last time as she was grazing peacefully alongside another bachelor while Coal was sparring for a band of his own. I was ever grateful she was not close by and possibly getting caught in the middle of the scuffle.

Making many trips to Sand Wash, ever looking for a small red filly in the distance and eventually giving up hope of finding this treasure came to an amazing discovery yesterday.

As I focused in on the red young filly my heart skipped a beat and I gasped to think,

“could this be our Ruby?” I recognized the stallion as a bachelor, but who was the pinto horse, was that another stallion?

The mares would never seem to want her around. As the larger pinto moved I verified that indeed, that was a mare, but his red filly didn’t fit with any of my descriptions or mares and foals.

Upon arriving home I sent the photo to Heather Robson, in New Zealand. Heather, although never visiting the Sand Wash Basin knows our horses better than anyone else.

She knew immediately that it was indeed Ruby! I went through several of my photos, examining any detail to confirm the identity; she has few features to gone on. But after some thought we are sure that this is our Ruby.

She has been friended by an older mare and now is part of this small new family band, Skip, Feather and Ruby.

Attorney discloses possible Routt County homicide motive

Court documents filed Wednesday shed some new light on a possible motive for the slaying of Routt County resident Edward Zimmerman.

Steamboat Springs attorney Leslie Goldstein has been appointed to represent Kristen Johnson, who is being held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Johnson’s husband, Lucas Johnson, is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder.

On Wednesday, Goldstein filed a motion with the court asking for access to the “crime scene located at Mr. Zimmerman’s home” on Yellow Jacket Drive between Steamboat and Stagecoach.

“Specifically, it appears that the prosecution is attempting to lay

out a motive for Mr. Zimmerman’s untimely death by asserting that the destruction/or theft of marijuana plants was for financial gain,” Goldstein wrote in the motion.

“Discovery states that there was an extensive grow operation conducted in many areas of the home.”

Zimmerman was reported missing Feb. 28, and his remains were discovered the following week.

The Routt County District Attorney’s Office is expected to file formal charges against the Johnsons by today. They are both due to appear in court again at 1 p.m. today. Their attorneys have requested that their hearings be delayed.

In addition to first-degree murder, Lucas Johnson is being held on suspicion of aggravated motor vehicle theft and possession of more than 12 ounces of marijuana.

more than 100 pounds of marijuana was seized from the Johnson residence.

This is not the first time Lucas Johnson has been accused of a crime involving marijuana.

On April 15, 2014, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia arrested Johnson during a traffic stop. In a news release, the Sheriff’s Office described Johnson as a Florida man.

While searching Johnson’s car, deputies found a small amount of heroin, two to three pounds of marijuana and $100,130 in cash,

Driver taken to hospital, vehicle leaking chemicals on Rabbit Ears

U.S. Highway 40 on Rabbit Ears Pass remained closed Thursday night after a tanker truck hauling a chemical rolled over.

Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Scott Elliott said he did not know when the road would be reopened. Traffic was being detoured onto Colo. Highways 131 and 134.

A trooper patrolling the area reported the crash at about 5 p.m., and Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue firefighters responded to extricate the driver.

The driver was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center.

Elliott said the driver had serious injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.

“The guy was fortunate that he survived the crash,” Steamboat Fire Chief Mel Stewart said. “The cab was completely destroyed.”

Stewart said the driver was later flown to a hospital on the Front Range.

During the crash, the cab of the tanker separated from the load it was hauling and both parts landed on the side of the road at mile marker 141. The

truck rolled right after where a runaway truck ramp is located in the Routt National Forest.

A hazardous materials crew arrived at about 9 p.m. to clean up the spilled chemical. Elliott said the necessary government agencies were notified about the spill.

Stewart said the chemical was not extremely hazardous.

After first-responders got the driver out, troopers stayed clear

of the area.

Elliott said residents who lived downhill of the crash were able to go up the pass to get to their homes.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

DENVER — Anonymous surveys asking Colorado’s middle- and high-school students about their sex lives and drug habits are on hold while the state board of education awaits reaction from parents.

Survey has been given to a sampling of students every other year since 1991. But some members of the Republican-controlled board of education say the survey is inappropriate for kids and that parents need to sign off before kids take the surveys.

The board heard from nearly two dozen health officials and

parents Thursday asking them not to change how the survey is collected. No one spoke in favor of changing how the survey is done.

But the seven-member board voted to delay a month to await thoughts from parents who consider the surveys inappropriate.

COLORADO SPRINGS — A Colorado Springs developer who was involved in the relocation project for the U.S. Olympic Committee headquarters has filed for bankruptcy protection.

Developer Ray Marshall and more than 80 partnerships and limited liability companies in which he owns an interest have asked a federal court to intervene, citing $3.9 million in debts stemming from his developments.

Marshall still faces six theft and racketeering charges in connection with allegations he diverted $1 million in grants and city funds from

a $42.3 million deal to keep the USOC headquarters in Colorado Springs.

Marshall said in the filing he has $265,000 in assets, most of it from a 2005 loan on a four-bedroom home in northwest Colorado Springs that was sold in July.

A court-appointed trustee will sell his remaining assets to repay about a half-dozen creditors.

Marshall was one of the city’s most prominent developers and was selected in 2008 to convert a former furniture store into the USOC headquarters building, renovate a former Colorado Springs Utilities building into a home

for Olympic sporting organizations and renovate and expand the Olympic Training Center, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported.

Marshall’s attorney, Lee Kutner, of Denver, said Wednesday that even through Marshall resolved most of his debts, he had too many guaranteed debts that he couldn’t resolve.

According to the filing, Marshall’s debts include a $1 million judgment from First Citizens Bank of Raleigh, N.C., which took over the failed United Western Bank in Denver that had financed the USOC building renovation.

DENVER — A wildlife guide has been sentenced to six months home confinement, a $5,000 fine, 50 hours of community service and three years’ probation for illegally capturing and maiming mountain lions and bobcats to make hunts easier for clients by shooting the cats in the paws or legs or attaching leg traps to hold them.

Nicholaus Rodgers, of Shady Cove, Oregon, pleaded guilty to conspiring to violate the Lacey Act, which prohibits the interstate sale of wildlife taken in violation of state regulations.

Rodgers worked as an assistant hunting guide for Loncarich Guides and Outfitters.

Christopher Loncarich, Rodgers’ employer, was a big game outfitter and hunting guide who owned Loncarich Guides and Outfitters and operated primarily in west central Colorado on the border with Utah.

“The disturbing conduct uncovered during the course of this investigation is a reminder that even today, poaching remains a threat to the wildlife populations,� Tony Wood, law enforcement chief with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, said in a statement issued Thursday. “We hope this sentencing serves to deter those who are intent upon exploiting wildlife populations at the expense of present and future generations of ethical sportsmen and others who appreciate wildlife,� he said.

According to federal and state authorities, Loncarich outfitted and guided mountain lion and bobcat hunts in the rugged Bookcliffs Mountains, which run along the ColoradoUtah border north and west of Grand Junction.

Investigators said they found more than 15 clients who had taken part in the illegal killing of more than 30 mountain lions and bobcats.

MIAMI — Talk show host Rodner Figueroa was fired from Univision after saying Michelle Obama looks like someone from the cast of “Planet of the Apes.”

Figueroa, who is known for his biting fashion commentary, made his remarks during a live segment of the show “El Gordo y la Flaca” during which the hosts were com-

menting on a viral video that shows a makeup artist transforming himself into different celebrities, including Michelle Obama.

“Well, watch out, you know that Michelle Obama looks like she’s from the cast of ‘Planet of the Apes,’ the movie,” Figueroa, 42, said with a giggle.

When hostess Lili Estefan countered with “What are you saying?” and host Raul de Molina said Obama was very attractive,

Figueroa defended his remark, saying, “but it is true.”

In a statement, Univision called Figueroa’s comments “completely reprehensible” and said they “in no way reflect the values or opinions of Univision.”

Figueroa, who in 2014 won a Daytime Emmy Award, did not respond to requests for comment Thursday. He worked for Univision for 17 years and had been on “El Gordo y la Flaca” since 2000.

Dealing with sneaky sister at Mom’s service Dear Annie: My sister and I traveled independently to Nebraska in order to care for our mother after she was hospitalized. We were there for two months, taking turns sleeping on an air matANNIE’S tress by her MAILBOX bed. Mom finally was well enough to travel back to my home so I could care for her here.

During the time we spent in Nebraska, my sister and I went through Mom’s apartment, getting Kathy and Marcy rid of things and sorting through pictures and other stuff. The second night that I slept by Mom’s bedside, my sister suggested I stay there and she’d sleep on the sofa. I agreed because I trusted her. My mistake.

While I was in Mom’s bedroom, my sister went through Mom’s stuff, put things she wanted into boxes and sealed them. When I noticed the new boxes, she said she had just rearranged things to fit better. I’m pretty sure she took several pictures that I wanted, along with a few other items. She denies this and says I don’t know what I am talking about. I have no way to prove what she did, but those items have never turned up, and it’s been two years.

Mom passed away recently, and now I have to see my sister at Mom’s memorial service. She’s going to act like nothing happened. I am so hurt by what she did. How can I not scream out what a liar she is?

I was the oldest of five, with an alcoholic, abusive father who was in the military and spent most of his time overseas. And when he was home, he spent it either in a bar or with a local barmaid. I always knew he didn’t want me. I’ve spent my life being treated like a secondclass son to my brother and sisters then and now.

If this father also thinks no one outside of the family sees how badly he is treating his wife and child, he is out of his mind, because you cannot hide this. One of these days, “Jack” will suddenly turn on him, back him into a corner and unleash all of his anger on him, telling him how worthless he thinks he has been as a father. NEW YORK — Eric Clapton will celebrate his 70th birthday with two shows at Madison Square Garden in May. The iconic guitarist announced Thursday that he will perform at the famed New York City venue May 1 and 2.

He turns 70 on March 30.

Clapton, a former member of

the Yardbirds and Cream, has performed at MSG more than 40 times.

Clapton will be accompanied by his band members Paul Carrack, Steve Gadd, Nathan East, Chris Stainton, Sharon White and Michelle John at the MSG shows.

The concert dates could change due to the NBA playoffs.
