Foreword
It is with great pleasure that I introduce this special edition photobook, commissioned to mark the 137th anniversary of St Cuthbert’s Society, founded by its students in 1888. This milestone offers a welcome opportunity to celebrate what truly defines Cuth’s: our people and our distinctive spirit.
This publication also commemorates 130 years since, in 1895, the Society formally received both its name and its enduring motto, Gratia gratiam parit, usually translated ‘Kindness begets kindness’. These quietly profound words have shaped generations of students, staff, and friends who have found belonging here. They speak to the generosity, mutual care, and lasting connections that continue to define life at Cuth’s.
In 2024, we were fortunate to welcome Michele Allan as our Artist in Residence during Epiphany and Easter terms. Michele’s work goes far beyond photography; she captured the everyday rhythms of life at Cuth’s with sensitivity and insight, from laughter in the JCR to moments of quiet study, and the beauty of our locations. Her pictures reflect the character of a community we proudly describe as ‘traditionally untraditional’. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Michele and also to Joel Lozano, editor of this photobook, for his thoughtful curation.
This collection offers a visual snapshot of life in a community that is always changing and to which each generation of students and staff makes its own unique contribution. For those who have passed through our doors, I hope these pages bring back treasured memories and offer a reminder of your part in our still-unfolding story!
