I left for college for four years and after graduation, I promptly moved back to join the family real estate business. What do people need to know about St. Croix that they should not miss? The ocean! It is the most beautiful and crystal clear ocean they will ever swim in. How are you “Green”? I installed a wind generator and a solar hot water system at my home and I use high efficiency appliances and light bulbs. Years in Real Estate Business? 20

What do people need to know about St. Croix that they should not miss? People who visit St. Croix for a vacation don’t always get the opportunity to experience the warmth of the Crucian people and the wonderful mix of cultures and history that is so prevalent here. How are you “Green”? Having a 10 year old son who is “environmentally sophisticated’, my wife and I are continually adapting to a ‘greener’ lifestyle. That it is safe, in spite of what the taxi drivers in St. Thomas tell their fares, that it is a residential island where people make friends that they retain forever not just for

months and that it is the most beautiful place in the United States. How are you “Green”? I recycle, pick up trash by the side of the road so that someone else doesn't have to, heat my water with solar energy, but could do lots more. Years in Real Estate Business? 32

We use solar panels to charge our batteries for electrical power on our boat; we use eco friendly products, reusable bags at stores with our purchases, and we recycle aluminum cans. I decided to ‘check out of corporate life’ after a successful career and put it to work for myself…and I always loved the islands after visiting many times! What do people need to know about St. Croix that they should not miss? St. Croix has a great diversity of cultures, natural beauty and laid-back atmosphere… don’t miss the local restaurants as all have their own particular style…and flavor! How are you “Green”? At home, we use solar hot water, turn off fans and lights not being used, we grow our own herbs and have many fruit trees. A trip around the island, especially to outlying areas, many of which are protected, such as Point Udall and the rain forest remind us that this island will never be overgrown like so many of the other islands. My goal is to build a small single family home that is completely “green”. Years in Real Estate Business? I started in the early ‘70’s.

DAVE CARR www.DaveCarr.vi What brought you to St. Croix? I first visited St. Croix to visit a friend on spring break after a particularly nasty Midwestern winter. I concluded that anything North of the Tropic of Cancer was essentially unfit for human habitation most of the year. I moved here permanently a few months later. What do people need to know about St. Croix that they should not miss? Many visitors miss experiencing the local perspective. How are you “Green”? I was instrumental in the creation of Clairmont Territorial Park and am currently advising on the initial property acquisition for the Maroon Sanctuary Park. Years in Real Estate Business? 25

The water heater at home is turned on only when necessary. I drive less and more responsibly. I encourage clients to use solar, wind power and other conservation methods when possible. The weather, the tropical beauty, and the friendly islanders. How are you “Green”? We live our home life in open air space and use very little electric, and conserve on waste water. The Taste of St. Croix was born out of the desire to highlight the best in cuisine that St. Croix has to offer. Two local restaurateurs, Kelly Odom of Tutto Bene and Katherine Pugliese, formerly of Bacchus Restaurant, knew of the rich and multi- cultural culinary talents locally. They decided to create a showcase where these talents could be highlighted and celebrated. And what a celebration! What was once a one-day event has grown into a multi-day food extravaganza, with a range of events to choose from to include prominent chefs and vintners. Now it’s known as the St. Croix Food and Wine Experience. This year alone you can choose to attend several ‘Cork & Fork’ dinners, drink your weight in wine at ‘Wine in the Warehouse’, become educated at the ‘Wine Symposium’ or 18

make your insides delight in a host of restaurant dinners. And if you miss any of these, there is always the anchor event itself, The Taste of St. Croix. “The first year, we were very happy with the results and the participation,” said Katherine. “We even had a bonus – we managed to raise some funds! That is how our partnership with the St. Croix Foundation grew. We admired their administrative skills as well as their involvement in community revitalization projects and found them and their causes to be very deserving of the proceeds.’ The St. Croix Foundation was honored to be chosen as a partner. “The Foundation has always been committed to building strong partnerships in order to address the critical social and economic challenges facing our islands,” said Deanna James, Chief Operations Officer of the foundation. “The most visible examples of our work include the revitalization of Sunday Market Square, in addition to our very popular Scrape, Paint, Rejuvenate Program, which assists property owners in downtown Christiansted with preserving the façade of their buildings. More recently, we have earmarked a percentage of the funds raised for educational initiatives that help to combat illiteracy on St. Croix. So think of this event as eating and drinking for a great cause!” As for Katherine and Kelly, they see this event as just growing in stature. “We would love it if the outcome of this event presented an opportunity for national recognition for

its many participants,” said Katherine. “We have so much talent here on this island, and we continue to hear visitors repeat this sentiment over and over again. This is also a way to interest all St. Croix residents to consider entering the service industry. We currently fund the VI Culinary Team’s efforts and also summer programs for adults and youths 14-19 as well. The summer programs are classes geared towards people just entering the industry or presently employed in it. In 2007, we had 16 graduates and in 2008 we had 18. Businesses now tell us that our graduates go to the top of their hiring list, so the positive impact of these courses is really validated with statements like this. So where will you be every April? The good thing is that we have done some of your leg work for you: below are 5 easy steps you can take right now that will make a huge impact on our planet and save you $$, yet won’t drive you over the edge (like trying to find organically made clothing!). The great thing is that if you want to get more aggressive in your efforts, we have some great sources for you to check out, along with 5 more tips you can start doing right now. 1 - Change a Light Bulb Installing a compact fluorescent bulb (CFL) is the quickest, easiest way to save energy -- and money. Good for You: Replace one 75-watt incandescent bulb with a 25-watt CFL and save up to $83 over the life of the bulb.

2 - Unplug Things That Glow Anything that has an LED (light emitting diode) that glows even after you turn it off continues to draw power (that you pay for). Your TV, cell phone charger, and printer are likely culprits. Unplug the offenders from wall sockets and plug them into power strips instead. When you leave a room, flip the strip switch to cut the flow of electricity. Good for You: Unplug appliances and electronics that glow and you could save $200 a year.

3 - Recycle Your Electronics Americans tossed out a whopping 5.5 billion pounds of electronics -- TVs, stereos, cell phones, and computers -- in 2005, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The result? Millions of pounds of chemicals and heavy metals ended up in the ground even though it's easier than ever to recycle electronics. 4 - Support Local Farmers If your food could talk, it would tell quite a tale. Typical grocery store produce travels nearly 3,500 miles before it ends up on your plate. All this traveling burns fossil fuels and results in carbon emissions -- a fancy term for pollution. Buying from local farmers means you're not only getting the freshest food possible, you're saving energy. Good for You: Purchase food from the local farmers market, from stands on the street or visit established small local farms. It’s fresh, it’s green and your $$’s help to keep them in business!

5 - Look for the Label When it's time to replace a household appliance, choose a product with an Energy Star label. Sponsored by the EPA and the Department of Energy, the Energy Star program rates products from light bulbs to kitchen appliances. Energy Star labels guarantee that products are energy-efficient. For example, a battery charger labeled with the Energy Star logo will use 35 percent less energy than a standard one. Good for You: A household with Energy Star products uses about 30 percent less energy than the average household -- an annual savings of about $570.

2 - Bring your own cup (BYOC) Take a cup of Joe every morning? Hang around the water cooler often? Buy a metal cup or a sturdy, reusable plastic cup (made from some percentage of post consumer recycled content) and lower your consumption of paper and plastic. An effort this small will go a long way!

3 - Cut down on paper towel use Here is an easy challenge. Instead of paper towels for cleaning around the house and other chores, buy micro fiber towels that can be washed and reused. They absorb large amounts of liquids, and come in sizes from small to extra large. Also, try cutting up old t-shirts to be used as rags or using cloth napkins at the dinner table.

4 - Do full loads only Whenever you wash just a few clothes or dishes at a time rather than waiting for a full load to accumulate, you're wasting water, power, and money. Most of the energy consumed by washers goes toward heating the water -- about 90% in the clothes washer and 80% in the dishwasher. Combining half-loads, choosing short cycles, and using cold or warm rather than hot water in the clothes washer racks up savings. Good for You: Wash two fewer loads of clothes and one fewer load of dishes a week and save up to 4,500 gallons of water a year.

5 - Use smart hot water Have a water heater at home? Make sure it’s on a timer to maximize its use and to save money too! If you can, change your water heater to a solar powered unit or to a tank less water heater. Tank Less Water Heaters heat water directly without the use of a storage tank. Therefore, they avoid the standby heat losses associated with storage water heaters. Make the investment now, and save money for the life of your home!

Having lived on St. Croix now for fifteen years and having worked in real estate for all of that time, I’ve been asked many questions about life on the island. BUT it always seems like there are two questions everyone is curious about . . . “What’s it like to live in paradise?” and “What made you choose St. Croix as your home?” So, here it goes . . . living in paradise. . . As with any place, you do tend to take your surroundings for granted - I never thought that the view of the Caribbean Sea would just fade into the background of my normal life. And as I sit here to write this, I am disappointed in myself for having let that happen. The fact is, I live in a place where I can look over the beauty of the turquoise waters of the Caribbean EVERYDAY that I wake up. I can walk through town and KNOW many of the people I pass and, most likely, we will greet each other with “Good Afternoon”. Sure, we don’t have the Mall of America, but Minnesota doesn’t have our sunny and warm weather. My children are experiencing something that few will ever experience . . . the familial feeling of growing up on and island. And years from now, they will remember some really amazing childhood memories from this little place. Now, as for the question, “What made me choose St. Croix as my home?” Well, everyone has a different “why did I move here” story. Ask anyone on St. Croix and you will hear everything from a wedding, a planned relocation or even a “It sounded like a nice place to live so I got on a plane and moved” story. My story starts with a spring break trip to St. Croix during my freshman year of college. After a few years of outrageous long distance bills, diligence in finishing my college degree, and much gray hair on my dad’s head, I drove my car to Florida and boarded a plane with a one way ticket to St. Croix. And as they say, “The rest is history. . .” Thinking back on my own arrival, my curiosity peaked and I hit the streets to ask others why they too chose St. Croix.
