Sixth Form Welcome Handbook

YEAR 12 AND 13

In this booklet you’ll find all the information you need to start your journey at St Chris. Along the way, you’ll meet some key members of staff, find out about our school’s culture and routines, and the answers to any initial questions you may have.

If you have any further queries before your start date, please contact the Admissions Team via admissions@stchris.co.uk

Once you have started at St Chris, your Personal Tutor will be your first point of contact, and their contact details will be sent to your parents/carers at the start of term.

Welcome to the Sixth Form

We’re delighted to welcome you to our Sixth Form community.

We’re really pleased you’re joining us—and we hope you’re feeling excited about what lies ahead. The next two years will be a time of growth, challenge and opportunity as you focus on the subjects you love, explore new interests, and start shaping your plans for the future.

Whether you’re thinking about university, an apprenticeship, or heading into the world of work, we’re here to support you every step of the way. You’ll be part of a close-knit and relaxed Sixth Form community where individual strengths are recognised and supported.

Life in the Sixth Form is different. You’ll have more freedom and more responsibility—but also more trust, more space to think for yourself, and more people around you to guide and support you. From your Personal Tutor to our Sixth Form Learning Support Assistant, to the Sixth Form Team based in the Centre every day—you’ll always have someone to talk to.

We have high hopes for you, and we’ll encourage you to aim high too. Use this time to push yourself, try something new, and take full advantage of the opportunities on offer.

We can’t wait to get to know you.

Jenny Savage Assistant Head, Sixth Form

The Sixth Form Day

From your very first day in Sixth Form, you’ll begin to take more ownership of your learning and time. You’ll be issued with your personal timetable, your school email, and login details for Microsoft Teams and the school network. Your parents or carers will also be able to view your timetable via My School Portal.

At St Chris, everyone – students and staff – is on a first-name basis. You’ll quickly get to know your teachers, who are listed on your timetable. The school runs on a two-week rotation: Week A and Week B, each with a slightly different schedule.

You’re expected to attend all your timetabled lessons and make good use of your independent study sessions to support your learning. Every part of the day – from Period 1 to Period 6 – is part of your academic and personal development.

Getting Started

As a member of the St Chris Sixth Form you’re part of a supportive, inclusive and dynamic community.

Sixth Form Centre

Your base is the dedicated Sixth Form Centre, designed exclusively for Sixth Form students. It’s a space for study, relaxation, collaboration and connection.

You’re encouraged to make full use of the Centre’s facilities during your private study periods – while also being mindful of others using the space. The Centre includes two common rooms with comfy seating, kitchen facilities, and space for group discussions or informal study. You’ll also have access to the Sixth Form Garden – perfect for a breath of fresh air, table tennis, or a quiet break between lessons.

Registration

Head of Year 12 (Lower Sixth)

UCAS and Oxbridge Adviser

Susanne Okulitch

Susanne.okulitch@stchris.co.uk

You’ll start each day by registering at 8.40am with your Personal Tutor in the Sixth Form Centre. You’ll also tap in and out of school each day using your student ID card – you’ll be shown how this works during the Sixth Form Conference.

You’ll also be registered by your teacher at the start of each lesson.

Morning Talks

Our assemblies are known as Morning Talks, and they’re a much-loved part of St Chris life. As a Sixth Former, you’ll attend:

• Whole School Morning Talk on Mondays 10.55 to 11.15am (compulsory)

Sixth Form Learning Support Mentor

Annie Ward

annie.ward@stchris.co.uk

You’ll be part of a Tutor Group, which meets each morning for Registration. Your Personal Tutor will be a key part of your Sixth Form experience –someone who’ll get to know you well and support you throughout your time here.

You will have weekly one-to-one tutorials with your Personal Tutor which are a space to talk about your progress, challenges, successes, study strategies, and future plans. These sessions usually last between 15 and 30 minutes and are tailored to you. Your Personal Tutor will also help you settle in, encourage you to make the most of what St Chris offers, and check in on your wellbeing. They’ll stay in touch with home too, to share updates and provide a link between school and family.

• Sixth Form Morning Talk on Wednesdays 10.55 to 11.15am (compulsory)

Morning Talks take place in the School Theatre and bring the community together to share ideas, hear from speakers, and enjoy music and performance. They also include a short period of silence – a long-standing tradition at St Chris that offers time for reflection.

You’re encouraged to contribute to Sixth Form Morning Talks – either as part of a group or on your own. In the past, students have given talks on a wide range of thoughtful, personal and creative topics. Please find further information about Morning Talks in the Futures section in this handbook.

There’s also a Whole School Morning Talk on Fridays (10.55 to 11.15am), which is optional for Sixth Formers. You can check the topic list each week and attend any that interest you.

On days with no Morning Talks you’ll spend time in Tutor Groups or in one-to-one mentoring.

Breaks

There are two breaks during the school day: Little Break: 10.35 to 10.55am Lunch Break: 1.00 to 1.55pm

During Little Break, you’re welcome to bring your own snack – just make sure it’s vegetarian and free from nuts and sesame.

Moving Time

There are 5 minute gaps between lessons for you to move between one lesson and the next.

Leaving Site

You’re allowed off-site during lunch (1.00 to 1.55pm) with parental consent, but you must return on time for your Period 5 lesson. Always sign out and sign back in via the Sixth Form Centre.

For the Autumn Term in Year 12 (Lower Sixth) you’re expected to remain on site for the full school day (8.40am to 3.40pm).

From the start of the Spring Term and onwards, if you have no Period 6 lesson, you may leave school after Period 5 (2.45pm) to continue your studies independently. Just remember to sign out before you go. If you do have lessons during Period 6, you’ll need to remain on site for the full day.

Attendance and Punctuality

Being punctual and attending school regularly are not just important habits—they’re signs of respect, self-discipline, and readiness for life beyond school. In the Sixth Form, you’re expected to take more responsibility for how you manage your time and commitment to learning. These habits will support your academic progress now, and help prepare you for the expectations of higher education and the workplace.

Why it Matters

Excellent attendance is one of the most significant contributors to success in Sixth Form. Being present every day ensures you can:

Follow the flow and structure of lessons

Take part in valuable in-class discussions and activities

Receive immediate support and feedback from teachers

Build consistency in your learning and confidence in your subjects

When attendance becomes irregular, it can quickly affect your progress—and make it harder to keep up with coursework and key concepts.

Punctuality is just as important. Arriving on time means you don’t miss key content at the beginning of lessons and shows your teachers and peers that you are focused and dependable. Employers and universities often ask for feedback on punctuality in references, so it’s a habit worth cultivating now. Like in the workplace or at university, there are no bells at St Chris, so you will need to wear a watch, be aware of your timetable commitments and plan to arrive on time.

Absence and Reporting Procedures

We understand that sometimes absence is unavoidable. If you are unwell or unable to attend school:

• Your parent or carer should email: attendance@stchris.co.uk

• Please also copy in your Personal Tutor

• Contact should be made before 9.00am Your parent/carer can also report an absence using My School Portal, which will notify the relevant staff members automatically.

If you’re running late, we ask that this is also communicated as above. When you arrive at school, please go directly to the Sixth Form Centre to sign in.

Time Off and Appointments

We appreciate that from time to time, you may need to miss school for a legitimate reason such as a medical appointment, university visit, interview, or driving test. Here’s what to do:

• For absences of half a day or less, parents should email Jenny Savage, Assistant Head (Sixth Form) at: jenny.savage@stchris.co.uk

• For any absence longer than half a day, permission must be requested in advance by emailing the Head, Rich Jones, at: head@stchris.co.uk

You can also submit absence requests via My School Portal.

If you are leaving school during the day for an appointment, remember to sign out and sign back in at the Sixth Form Centre.

Mobile Phones

Our mobile phone policy is designed to strike a balance between encouraging independence and creating a calm, focused learning environment.

Around campus and during lessons, phones should be switched off and must be stored in your phone pouch, unless a teacher has given specific permission for educational use. Your phone pouch will be issued to you at the start of term.

In the Sixth Form Centre, you’re allowed to use your phone to listen to music (with headphones) or to check academic instructions, such as Teams messages or tasks.

Please be respectful of others and avoid using your phone for social media or messaging during the school day.

For information on our Mobile Phone Policy please visit our website

The Sixth Form team will help to monitor this policy and are always happy to talk through any concerns. Using phones responsibly is part of the trust we place in you as young adults at St Chris.

Please see our Mobile Phone Policy on the school website for further information.

Clothing & PE Kit

There is no uniform in the Sixth Form at St Chris.

However, we do expect students to dress appropriately for a school environment—this means clothing should be clean, in good condition, and suitable for daily activities, including practical work or moving around the school.

Please note:

• Camouflage or military-style clothing is not permitted

• Hoods, hats and caps should be removed indoors, unless worn for religious or cultural reasons

• Jewellery should be minimal and safe, especially when taking part in physical activity

• Long hair must be tied back for PE or sport

• Nails should be short enough to avoid risk of injury to yourself or others

As young adults, we trust you to make respectful clothing choices and to represent yourself—and the school—positively.

PE Kit

Sixth Form students do not take part in core PE unless they’ve chosen a sporting option as part of the Opportunities Programme or are involved in a school sports team.

If you do take part in sport:

• You may wear any appropriate, practical sportswear

• If you’re representing the school in a sports fixture, team kit will be provided

St Chris-branded PE kit is available to buy but is completely optional. If you’d like to purchase items, you can do so from our schoolwear supplier SWI: www.swischoolwear.co.uk

Lockers & Lost Property

As a Sixth Form student, you can be allocated your own locker where you can safely store books, bags, sports kit and personal items. Lockers are accessible throughout the day so that you won’t need to carry everything with you. Please bring a padlock for your locker.

To help lost items find their way back to you, please make sure all personal belongings—including clothing, shoes, water bottles and PE kit—are clearly labelled with your name.

Any items that are handed in can be collected from the Mulberry Building in the main School Courtyard.

Food at St Chris

Lunchtime at St Chris is an important part of the day –a chance to pause, enjoy a good meal, and spend time with friends and staff. Whether you choose a school lunch or bring your own, you’ll find the experience welcoming and relaxed.

You’ll eat in the Dining Hall, known as the IG – a nickname that dates back to when the space was used as an Indoor Gym. Lunch lasts for 55 minutes, from 1.00pm to 1.55pm, giving you time to unwind before afternoon lessons begin.

School Lunches

Our school meals are fresh, vegetarian and thoughtfully prepared in-house by our catering team. Each day, there are hot meal options, pasta bar, baked potato option, a salad bar, fruit, and a dessert.

Weekly menus are sent to students and also available on My School Portal, so you our your parents can always check what’s on the menu .

If you have any allergies or dietary requirements, please let the Admissions Team know before term begins so we can make sure your needs are supported by our catering team.

If you’re planning to eat school lunches, your parent or carer will need to inform the Finance Office before the start of each term. They can do this by emailing: billings@stchris.co.uk

Packed Lunch

If you prefer to bring a packed lunch, you’re very welcome to do so. Packed lunches must be vegetarian and nut-free, and can be eaten in the IG or in the Sixth Form Centre – whichever you prefer.

Snacks

During Little Break (from 10.35 to 10.55am), you can enjoy a small snack brought from home – again, this must be vegetarian, nut-free and sesamefree. We encourage healthy options to help keep you fuelled for the day ahead.

The Sixth Form Tuck Shop also opens at selected times during the year. Run by students, it offers a variety of snacks which can be purchased with cash or card. You’ll hear from your peers when it’s open and what’s on offer.

Transport, Cars and Parking

School Bus Transport

St Chris has a partnership with a bus company so that students can travel from a number of areas directly to school.

For more information about bus routes and prices, or to book a space on the bus, please visit the website of our School transport provider, Zeelo.

Bus bookings for September open in June and the Admissions Team will contact parents/carers new to the school to let them know when bookings are open, and the process for booking a place.

After school, buses leave from the swimming pool car park at 3.50pm and there are staff on hand to ensure students are on the correct bus. There is also a Late Bus service at 5.15pm, including transport to London and Letchworth station.

Sixth Form Students Driving to School

If you’re a day student in the Sixth Form and would like to bring a car onto campus, you’re welcome to do so—but you’ll need permissions to do so from the Head, and a permit to park on site. Boarders may not bring motor vehicles to school other than in special circumstances. To apply to bring your car to school, you’ll also need a signed parental consent form. Please contact the Head’s PA, Toni Warner, to request further details and the relevant form: toni.warner@stchris.co.uk

For more information on buses visit the link

Parking and Drop-Off for Parents and Carers

As the school continues to grow, we’re aware that the parking and drop-off areas can become congested at the start and end of the day. We’re also located within a residential area, which makes it even more important that we park considerately and safely—for the sake of our neighbours, our community, and our students.

Please follow the guidance below when arriving or leaving the school site:

Please do:

Use the designated car parks marked in green on the map for parking and waiting

Drive no faster than 10 mph while on school roads

Be mindful of pedestrians, and be particularly aware of younger students who are learning about road safety

Park safely and allow space for other drivers

Only use disabled bays if you hold a valid Blue Badge

Please avoid:

Parking or waiting on the roundabout at the front of the school or in any areas with “No Parking” signs or double yellow lines

Blocking driveways or mounting pavements—these must remain clear for prams, wheelchairs, and small children

Parking too close to junctions, especially near the Cloisters Entrance, as this creates serious visibility and safety issues

Leaving engines idling while stationary—this affects both air quality and the surrounding community

If the road outside the Main Entrance (Barrington Road) is narrow due to oncoming traffic, please wait at the top of the road rather than mounting the pavement to pass.

Staff on Duty

To help support safe and respectful parking, members of staff are on duty at key points on the school site. They are there to monitor traffic and ensure safety for all members of the school community. Please follow their guidance and instructions—your cooperation helps keep everyone safe.

Academic Life

Academic Matters:

The Step Up to Sixth Form

Moving into Sixth Form marks a significant step in your learning journey. The way you study and what’s expected of you is different from what you may have experienced at GCSE, and while that brings challenges, it also brings exciting new freedoms.

At St Chris, we support you in developing the skills you’ll need to succeed—independence, responsibility, and self-motivation. You won’t be left to figure it all out alone. We’re here to guide you, challenge you, and encourage you to take the lead in your own learning.

Your Study Programme

Most students in the Sixth Form follow a study programme that includes:

Three A Level subjects, or a combination of A Levels and a number of new Level 3 Diplomas or BTEC courses

Option to take four A Levels, available for students where appropriate

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) (optional)

- a research-led project supporting independent thinking, analysis and academic writing

Crest Award (optional) - a student-led STEM project with Bronze, Silver and Gold levels

Core Maths (optional) – ideal for students who need maths to support their future pathway, but not at full A Level intensity

A structured one-to-one tutorial programme

Independent study periods, fostering ownership and self-direction

• A full PSHE and Higher Education guidance programme, including futures, wellbeing, finance and life skills

• Weekly Opportunities programme — a chance to explore, volunteer, create and grow

• One-to-one careers advice in Year 12 and Year 13

• 10 hours of Community Service

Each A Level, Level 3 Diploma or BTEC is taught in six 50-minute lessons per week, and your number of study periods will depend on how many subjects you’re taking.

Further details about subject options, the Opportunities programme, and the academic curriculum can be found on the school website. If you or your family have specific questions, feel free to contact your subject teacher, the relevant Head of Department, or Nat Baker, Deputy Head, at nat.baker@stchris.co.uk

Our Expectations

We want to see you thrive academically, and to do that, we ask you to meet the following expectations:

• Attend all timetabled lessons

• Arrive on time and prepared

• Bring the right equipment and materials

• Complete your work to the best of your ability

• Meet deadlines for assignments

• Use your study periods productively

• Ask for help when you need it

This isn’t about pressure—it’s about helping you reach your potential with the right support in place.

Independent Study and Study Periods

Sixth Form study is more demanding, but it also offers more opportunity to grow. You’ll be asked to think more deeply, approach tasks with curiosity, and extend your learning beyond the classroom.

Independent study is a key part of this. For each subject, you’ll be expected to complete three to four hours of additional study per week outside of lessons. This might include reading around the subject, writing essay plans, working on past papers, conducting research, or preparing coursework.

Study periods are built into your timetable to give you dedicated time for this. These aren’t “free” periods— they’re an essential part of your academic programme. The students who make the most of this time are often those who go on to achieve the highest results.

If you’re ever unsure how to use your study time, speak to your subject teacher—they’ll be happy to offer guidance and help you structure your work.

What is an Independent Learner?

An independent learner is someone who takes responsibility for their learning and uses their time purposefully. They know when to ask for help and how to adapt when things get difficult. This includes:

1. Knowing what they want to learn and how to go about it

2. Managing their time, energy and other commitments

3. Using a range of resources—books, podcasts, articles, discussions

4. Reflecting on progress and adjusting strategies as needed

If you need help building these skills, support is available from your Personal Tutor, Heads of Year, subject staff and our specialist team. We can help with study plans, supervised study sessions, time management, and resources tailored to you.

Making the Most of Study Periods

Here are a few suggestions for using your study time effectively:

Organise your notes and folders

Revisit and expand on lesson content

Begin homework and coursework early

Focus on topics you find most challenging Act on feedback from marked work

Read around your subject—articles, journals, case studies, TED Talks

Work on practical or creative work for subjects like Art, 3D Design or Music

Use past papers and exam questions to consolidate understanding

Take breaks where you can get fresh air and natural light. If studying for a whole period, plan a 5-minute walk half-way to give your brain a rest.

Be realistic with your study sessions—don’t over plan what you want to cover. If you’re ever feeling stuck or overwhelmed, speak to a member of the Sixth Form team. You’re not expected to do everything alone.

Monitoring Progress and Reports

Your teachers will track your progress through a mix of classwork, independent assignments, practical work, and mock exams. You’ll receive regular feedback to help you understand where you are and what steps you can take to improve.

If you’re finding a subject difficult, the first person to speak to is your subject teacher. We encourage open dialogue—they’ll be more than happy to help you find strategies that work.

Teachers, Heads of Department, Personal Tutors and the Sixth Form team all work together to ensure every student is making progress. If there are signs that you’re struggling, we’ll step in early to offer help— academic, practical, or emotional.

Academic Reports & Parents’

Consultations

We understand how important it is to keep your parents or carers informed. We hold two Parents’ Consultation Evenings each year, which run as hybrid events—parents can attend in person or online. These meetings are a chance to discuss your progress, explore subject-specific feedback and look ahead to your goals.

Parents book their appointments via My School Portal, and if more time is needed, subject leaders are happy to arrange extended meetings.

Find out more information about the Sixth Form curriculum

Your phone should be kept on silent and placed in the pouch provided during study periods. If music helps you concentrate, wear headphones—but be mindful of others and keep the volume low.

Don’t be afraid to set boundaries with friends during study time. You’re here to learn, and your time is valuable.

In addition to consultations, parents receive termly written reports that include your attainment grades, UCAS predictions, and attitude to learning. These reports should never be a surprise—ongoing feedback is a natural part of Sixth Form learning, and we encourage regular conversations between you, your teachers, and home.

Individualised Academic Support and Extension

We are committed to ensuring all students fulfil their academic potential, understanding the importance of developing strategies and skills that help each student grow in intellectual confidence, build resilience and develop the ability to reflect, to enable them to reach their educational and individual ambitions.

All departments and subjects offer opportunities to support and extend student’s learning beyond the classroom. These are often at lunchtime or after school, and in some cases, such as for A Level 3D Design, at weekends. These might include clinics, workshops, stretch-and-challenge sessions, or access to specialist resources.

We appreciate that learning is not a linear pathway, and some students may need more individualised support at certain times. We aim to equip our students with the skills and tools they need to enable them to achieve their full potential across the curriculum, becoming independent and confident learners. Provision may include:

In-class support

Small group immersion sessions

One-to-one support, where appropriate

Whether you’re working through a specific challenge or looking to improve how you approach study and revision, we’re here to help you find what works best for you.

If you’re experiencing a barrier to your learning— academic or otherwise—there are people here to help. Alongside your Personal Tutor, the Assistant Head (Sixth Form), and the Heads of Year, you can also turn to our Inclusion Team and our dedicated Sixth Form Learning Support Assistant for tailored academic support. Whether you need help with organising your studies, managing deadlines, or understanding how best to approach your subjects, we’re here to make sure you feel supported, heard and understood.

If you have a Special Educational Need or Disability (SEND), our Inclusion Team works closely with the Admissions Team to support a smooth transition into Sixth Form life. You’ll hear from them before you start at St Chris so that we can put the right support in place from day one.

Whatever your path through Sixth Form looks like, we’ll be walking alongside you.

Learning Support Mentor

Annie Ward

annie.ward@stchris.co.uk

Your wellbeing, sense of self, and ability to navigate the world confidently are just as important to us as your academic progress. That’s why we dedicate time each week to Futures, a programme designed to help you develop the knowledge, skills and attributes you need to make thoughtful, well-informed choices, now and in the future. This includes a Morning Talk, PSHE lessons and a Careers and Higher Education Programme. Morning Talks are our time to gather together as a Year Group, to inspire, inform and engage each other in various projects, ideas and learning talking place across the school.

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, Economic Education) at Sixth Form deals with some of the more challenging parts of becoming an adult, equipping you with the confidence to manage a variety of topics, including relationships; healthy choices; alcohol and substance use; staying safe at festivals and parties; your rights and the law; managing personal finance and budgeting; and driving safety. Lessons are reflective and discussionbased, giving you space to explore ideas, form opinions, and build important life skills. You’ll also be signposted to useful resources and support services along the way, so you know where to turn if you need help.

You—and your family—can find more information about PSHE and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) in our school policies and in our PSHE newsletters, which provide termly updates on what we’re covering in lessons.

Careers & Higher Education Programme

Planning for life after Sixth Form is an exciting part of your journey—and at St Chris, you won’t be doing it alone. We provide comprehensive careers and higher education guidance throughout your time in Sixth Form, starting from the very beginning of Year 12.

The programme includes:

Personal Guidance

Talks from visiting speakers

Study skills sessions

Guidance on apprenticeships, university and employment pathways

UCAS exhibition visits

Mock interviews and CV writing support

From the summer term in Year 12, you’ll begin next steps planning with the Sixth Form Team, who will provide personal guidance, work closely with you on your personal statement, help with course research, and the application process—whether you’re applying to university, conservatoire, an art foundation course, a higher-level apprenticeship, or entering the world of work. We can also help you plan an exciting and valuable gap year.

Each week, a Careers Newsletter is sent to you which contains links to a diverse range of opportunities, career highlights, and university spotlights.

Unifrog

All students have access to Unifrog, the leading online destinations platform. Unifrog is designed to be easy to use and helps you stay on top of your planning as you think about your next steps. • Organise your UCAS application, making the process straightforward

• Log achievements and build a dynamic CV that showcases your skills and strengths

Wellbeing and Support

Your Wellbeing Matters

At St Chris, we place high value on your emotional wellbeing. We know that when you feel supported and understood, you’re able to flourish – academically and personally.

We also understand that life can feel demanding. That’s why we encourage you to strike a healthy balance between study and personal time. Making good use of your school day for focused work can help you keep evenings and weekends free for rest, fun and connection.

You’re always welcome to speak to any member of staff – we have an open-door policy. Your PSHE programme will also guide you in looking after your mental health, offering useful tips and pointing you to additional resources.

STEER Tracking: Helping You Navigate Challenges

You’ll take part in STEER Tracking, a wellbeing checkin we do each term across the school. It’s a short questionnaire that helps us understand how you’re managing key aspects of life – and allows staff to spot and support any potential challenges early on.

It’s not about replacing the care we already provide, but enhancing it with insights that help us support you even more effectively.

More information about STEER will be shared at the start of term. You can also find out more on the STEER website (Search “STEER Tracking”).

The Mulberry Building: Wellbeing and Pastoral Support

The Mulberry Building is the pastoral and wellbeing hub of St Chris. It’s a welcoming, central space where all students—regardless of year group—can come for support, advice, or just a listening ear.

The pastoral team is based here, and here or the Sixth Form Team is your first port of call for any personal, academic or practical concerns. Whether you’ve lost your timetable, need help finding your next lesson, or simply want someone to talk to, you’re always welcome to drop in. No concern is too small.

Health and Medical Support

We have a School Nurse who is here to support you with day-to-day health needs, injuries, and any medical conditions you may have. If your health needs change, your parent or carer should let the Nurse know as soon as possible by emailing nurse@stchris.co.uk.

Injuries and Accidents

If your child has an accident at school, we will respond appropriately depending on the severity of the situation. You may be contacted directly, or receive a notification via Medical Tracker, detailing:

• The nature of the injury

• Treatment given

• Any follow-up advice (e.g. monitoring for concussion)

In the case of a head injury, parents are always informed. Students may be sent home (collected by parents/carers) or monitored in school, depending on the circumstances. A head injury alert card will be given to the student, and teachers will be notified.

Chronic Health Conditions

If your child has a chronic health condition (e.g. diabetes, epilepsy, sickle cell disease), please inform the School Nurse as soon as possible. We work closely with families—and with any external health professionals—to create and maintain Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs).

These plans ensure your child receives the right support and staff are trained appropriately.

Anaphylaxis

Students diagnosed with anaphylaxis must carry two clearly labelled Adrenaline Auto Injectors (AAIs) at all times. Parents are responsible for ensuring the medication is in date. An Allergy Action Plan must also be completed and kept on file.

Asthma

All students with an asthma diagnosis must carry a labelled, in-date inhaler with them at all times. Parents must complete an Asthma Card and keep the school informed of any changes to their child’s condition.

Feeling Unwell During the Day

If you feel unwell during a lesson, speak to the teacher or your Company Adviser. You may be sent to the School Nurse for assessment. If necessary, your parents or carers will be contacted and asked to collect you.

If you have been unwell with vomiting or diarrhoea, you must stay off school for 48 hours after symptoms have stopped, in line with Public Health guidance. Students with a high temperature should also remain at home until their temperature returns to normal without the use of medication.

Medication

We can administer prescription medication at school, but parents must complete an Administration of Medication Form, available from the School Nurse (nurse@stchris.co.uk). All medication must be:

In its original pharmacy-labelled container

Clearly marked with the student’s name, date of birth, and prescription details

We cannot accept loose or unlabelled tablets.

Over-the-counter medication can also be given at school, but only if a parental consent form has been completed. If this isn’t available or if there is any uncertainty, the school will contact parents for clarification before giving any medication.

Counselling Support

We offer a confidential counselling service for students who may benefit from additional emotional or mental health support. Appointments are available during the school day and can be arranged through the Sixth Form Team or the School Nurse.

Safeguarding at St Chris

At St Chris, safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. The Designated Safeguarding Lead is the person appointed to take central responsibility for child protection issues and safeguarding concerns in the School and is part of a wider Safeguarding Team.

The St Chris community shares the goal of helping to keep students safe by contributing to a safe environment for all through communication, vigilance and taking appropriate action.

For a student or a parent, the best person to approach with any concerns in the first instance is their class teacher. However, if it is felt that this is not appropriate in the circumstances, please contact someone on the Safeguarding Team:

The Wider Community and Leadership

As a Sixth Former, you’ll play an important role in the wider school. Whether you’re helping at events, mentoring younger students, or joining committees, your contribution makes a difference – and helps you develop too.

Here are some of the ways you can get involved:

Stand for a position on School Council or as a Major Official

Join a committee like Be Green, EDI, Food Committee, or Fundraising and Events

Become a Peer Mentor – with optional Youth Mental Health First Aid training

Support school events like St Christopalooza (our Summer Fair) and Open Days

Get stuck in with music, drama, sport or community service

We expect Sixth Formers to set the tone for the school – leading by example with respect, integrity and maturity. In short, to be someone others look up to.

School Council

The School Council meets once a term and gives students a real say in how the school is run. It’s a platform to raise ideas, propose changes, and vote on motions that matter to the school community.

Motions are proposed by Company Representatives and discussed at Council. Those that pass are then taken to a Whole School Meeting, chaired by the Head Students. There, the entire student body has a chance to explore the motion further before a final vote.

This democratic process is taken seriously and is a great example of how student voice is not only heard at St Chris – but acted on.

Major Officials and Student Leadership

At St Chris, we believe in genuine student voice and leadership. Our Major Officials – the Sixth Form Student Leadership Team – are a democratically elected group who represent the views of students right across the school, from Year 7 through to Upper Sixth.

The Major Officials lead on student involvement, act as ambassadors for the school, and play a key role in shaping school life. This includes representing students at key events, supporting wellbeing initiatives, championing causes and projects, and running the School Council.

The Sixth Form Major Officials - our name for the Student Leadership Team – are a democratically elected group of students who represent not only students within the Sixth Form, but all students at St Christopher School (from Year 7 to Sixth Form).

The Major Officials lead the School Council, which is an important feature of our community. There is a School Council meeting each term which gives students a chance to discuss their views and opinions and vote on motions that have been proposed to the Council by their Company Representative. Once a motion has been passed through Council it is taken to a Whole School Meeting, chaired by the Head Students, where it is discussed further before taking it to a final vote.

Elections for Major Official positions take place every year in January and all Year 12 (Lower Sixth) students are encouraged to stand for one of the positions. Students in Year 12 and 13 are also invited to join the various committees which are chaired by the Major Officials. Please speak directly to them if you are interested in contributing to their work.

Opportunities for Involvement

Elections for Major Official positions take place each January. All Year 12 students are warmly encouraged to stand. It’s an opportunity to develop leadership skills, work collaboratively with others, and make a meaningful impact on the school.

You can also join one of the many student committees chaired by the Major Officials –from environmental and sustainability work to events, equality and inclusion, and food culture. These groups are open to all Sixth Formers, and you can speak directly to a Major Official if you’d like to get involved.

Whether or not you hold a leadership title, Sixth Formers are role models within our school.

The way you conduct yourself – with kindness, integrity and respect – sets the tone for younger students and helps shape the community we all share.

Co-Curricular Life

At St Chris, your learning doesn’t stop when lessons end. An important part of your Sixth Form experience is the opportunity to explore your interests, try something new, and build skills outside the classroom.

Co-curricular activities are a valued part of the school day. We strongly encourage all Sixth Form students to get involved—not only because these activities support your personal development, but also because they are enjoyable, enriching, and play a key role in supporting your mental and physical wellbeing during what can be a demanding academic time.

The Opportunities Programme

The Opportunities Programme—or “Opps” as it’s known at St Chris—is a core part of your curriculum, taking place every Thursday afternoon for all students in Years 7 to 12 (I Group to Lower Sixth).

It’s designed to give you the space to try something new, build skills, and explore interests beyond your academic subjects. Whether you’re taking on a challenge, relaxing through creativity, or connecting with others, Opps is your time to grow in different ways.

A Shared and Inclusive Experience

Opps is one of the few moments in the week when students across year groups come together. You’ll meet others who share your interests and have the chance to build friendships outside your usual circles. Staff also lead sessions based on their own interests—from music to mindfulness, from crafts to campaigning—bringing fresh energy to every block.

Mind, Body and Soul

Opps options are grouped into three categories—Mind, Body, and Soul—and you’ll choose a new activity each half term. You’ll be encouraged to try a range of experiences across the year.

Activities have recently included:

• Debate

• Robotics

• Recycled fashion

• Musical theatre

• Chess

• Animal care

• Team sports

• Outdoor adventure

Themes of Service

The Opps programme is guided by four core themes of service:

1. To yourself – explore new passions, take on challenges, and care for your wellbeing

2. To our school – lead, mentor and share your skills with others

3. To our local community – get involved with local charities and causes

4. To the wider world – build cultural awareness and advocate for global issues

Whatever you choose, Opps is a time each week to step outside the classroom and do something different—something that helps shape the person you are becoming.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a fantastic opportunity to push yourself, build confidence, and develop valuable life skills. Open to all Sixth Form students, DofE can be completed at Bronze, Silver or Gold level, depending on what stage you’re at.

As part of the programme, you’ll take part in:

Volunteering

Physical activity

Skill development

Expeditions and training

Some of this will take place during Opps on Thursdays, with additional sessions at other times. You’ll receive more information about how to sign up and what’s involved at the start of term.

Community Service

Starting in January, all Year 12 students take part in the St Chris Community Service programme. This involves committing a minimum of 10 hours of volunteer work with local charities and organisations.

It’s a meaningful and rewarding way to give back—and a chance to connect with the wider community while gaining valuable experience for your future.

More information will be shared with you during the autumn term.

Clubs, Societies and Sports

There’s a wide range of clubs and activities on offer each term at St Chris, running during lunchtime and after school. From creative arts to science, from sports to music, there’s something for everyone—and Sixth Formers are always welcome.

Recent clubs have included:

Animal Care

Astronomy

British Sign Language (BSL)

Creative Writing

Debate

Lego Masters

Languages

Pottery

Robotics

Rock Band

Swim Club

Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Football, Netball, Rugby, Rounders and Tennis

For more information about music lessons and LAMDA

You’ll receive a full list of available clubs at the start of term, along with booking information where needed. Bookings are managed through the Evolve system, which is accessible via My School Portal. Full instructions on how to set up an account will be provided to your parents/carers in September.

In addition to clubs, there are plenty of opportunities to take part in:

• School drama productions

• Music ensembles and bands

• The annual musical

• The Recycled Fashion Show

• Competitive sports teams in football, rugby, cricket, netball, tennis, athletics and more

As a Sixth Former, you’ll also have access to the indoor swimming pool at set times, as well as to the fitness centre for independent training.

Music & Performing Arts Tuition

If you’d like to develop your musical or performance skills, there are a wide variety of lessons available to you as part of the Sixth Form co-curricular offer.

At St Chris, we offer instrumental and vocal tuition with experienced visiting teachers. Lessons take place during the school day and cover a wide range of instruments and styles.

We also offer LAMDA tuition (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) for those interested in developing their skills in drama, performance, and public speaking. These lessons also run during the school day.

To find out more or to book lessons for either music or LAMDA, please visit the website by scanning the QR codes above.

In the final week of the Summer Term, all Year 12 (Lower Sixth) students take part in our Late Summer Programme (LSP)—a week dedicated to challenge, adventure, cultural enrichment and learning outside the classroom.

LSP is one of the highlights of the Sixth Form year. You’ll get to choose from a range of trips, each offering a unique experience and the chance to make lasting memories.

for Students

What do I do if I want to change one of my A Level subjects?

Start by speaking to your Personal Tutor, your subject teachers, and your parents or carers. Once you’ve thought it through, you’ll need to speak to the Assistant Head (Sixth Form). They’ll help you explore your options and will speak to home before making any formal changes.

What if I don’t know what I want to do after my A Levels?

That’s completely okay. You’ll get guidance through the Careers and Higher Education Programme, and you can speak to our UCAS Advisers. We’ll support you in exploring all pathways—university, apprenticeships, Gap Years, or training programmes.

Are there subjects I should study for certain careers or university courses? Some degree courses require specific A Levels (e.g. Chemistry for Medicine). Others are more flexible. If you’re unsure, speak to the Assistant Head (Sixth Form)—ideally within the first two weeks of Year 12—so you can review your choices early.

I’m behind with my work. What should I do?

Don’t keep it to yourself. Talk to your Personal Tutor, Head of Year, subject teacher, the Sixth Form Learning Support Mentor, or, if you’re a boarder, your Houseparents. We’re here to support you and can help you get back on track.

Where can I work during study periods?

You’ve got lots of options:

• The Sixth Form Centre (quiet and group spaces)

• The Library in the Mulberry Building (open 8.00am to 5.30pm (5.00pm on Fridays)

• The IT Suite

• Art Studios if you’re studying Art

What is the Silence?

The Silence is a St Chris tradition—part of Morning Talk and some school meetings. It’s a short moment to pause, reflect and be still together as a community.

Who can I talk to if I have a problem?

Start with your Personal Tutor—they’re there for you. You can also speak to any trusted member of staff, anyone in the Sixth form Team, the School Nurse, or arrange to see our School Counsellor.

I’ve lost something! Where should I look?

Try Lost Property in the Mulberry Building. If it was left in the changing rooms, PE staff may have it.

I need to miss school. What do I do?

Your parent or carer should email school in advance to request time off. See the Attendance section for details.

I’d like to do some work experience. How do I arrange it?

Speak to your Personal Tutor and the Assistant Head (Sixth Form). They’ll help you plan and prepare.

Can I use the school computers?

Yes. You’ll be given a school login and password when you join. You’ll also need to sign the IT Use Agreement. There are computers in quiet study rooms in the Sixth Form Centre available for you to use.
