Kaufland’s move By Mitchell Clarke German hypermarket chain Kaufland is proposing to bring their empire to Pakenham and it's now up to the Minister for Planning to change the Cardinia Planning Scheme provisions to allow development at 795 Princes Highway. Minister Richard Wynne referred the proposal to an advisory committee, set up in July last year to overlook and consider the planning merits of Kaufland's entry into the Victorian market. If approved, the Pakenham development would include a supermarket covering 3781 square metres, a bottle shop of 319 square metres and a mall and food hall. The proposed single storey building has a height of 8.9 metres, with a feature parapet height to sit at 11 metres. The site can be accessed from both Princes

Minister for Economic Development Tim Pallas said. The advisory committee, which is made up of independent experts in strategic planning, urban design and traffic planning, has previously considered six sites across the state, with a 115,000 square metre distribution centre in Mickleham being built. The public is invited to make a submission to the advisory committee, with the Minister to consider the recommendations before making a final decision on the planning provisions. Pakenham site submissions opened on Monday 14 October and will close at 5pm on Tuesday 12 November with a public hearing set to commence on Wednesday 11 December. What is your involvement in art within the community? I am a member of the Berwick Artist's Society and about 30 of us meet each Thursday and help each other. What's your preferred subject matter/theme and what's some of your favourite pieces you have created? The subject matter I use comes from what's happening around me for example I did a pastel on the cost of the drought and another on the devastation of the bush fires. Where do you find your inspiration? My inspiration comes from the beauty of the Australian landscapes and the interesting people I meet. What's your favourite holiday spot in Australia? In Victoria camping along the Murray River and Camping on Lake Kununurra WA. What is your favourite book? Memoirs of a Geisha At school I ... was told I couldn't draw and so I didn't start art until after I was 50. What's your favourite movie? The Dressmaker What's something people don't know about you? I opened and managed a licensed cafe for eight years. If you were PM for a day, what would you do? I would look at ways of reducing plastic containers of all types and emphasise that we all need to be mindful about purchasing those products that impact the footprint each of us leaves behind. 4Cs saviours send a sign By Jessica Anstice Outraged volunteers and clients stormed the streets of Pakenham to protest the closure of the 4Cs Crisis Relief Centre on Thursday 10 October. Over 50 protesters took to Main Street to express their concerns and raise awareness about the importance of the charity organisation. Two 4Cs clients travelled all the way from Lakes Entrance to protest. "I wouldn't be alive if it weren't for the 4Cs,"
Emily McGinnes said. "I've had two strokes and MS and without these guys I couldn't afford to go to my appointments, I couldn't afford anything. All my clothing and everything are through the 4Cs. "If they shut them down people like us are going to suffer and we're not going to be able to eat." Ms McGinnes and her partner David Maat told the Gazette of when they lived on the streets of Pakenham for two and a half years, and without the 4Cs they would still be homeless.
When hearing of the closure, Ms McGinnes said her instant thought was, "we're going to go hungry, we're going to starve". "As soon as 4Cs close everything is going to go through the roof again, it's not fair," she said. "The other organisations that I've been to have pushed me away, they have turned their back on me, the only people that haven't turned their backs are the 4Cs. "Why can't we be fed here in Cardinia? Why isn't the council standing up and helping?"
Devastated at the thought of the closure, Mr Maat said he feels he has lost all hope. "The ways they make you feel there, they actually give you hope and make you feel like you are going to get back out of the gutter. No other joint does that," he said. "Now that they're closing there's no more hope anymore. If you walk into the Salvation Army, you don't get the same happy environment as you do at 4Cs. "It doesn't matter what day of the week, if we see the volunteers down the street they're so friendly to us and they treat us like humans."
Trains brought to a halt with trespasser on tracks By Mitchell Clarke A trespasser on the tracks of Pakenham Railway Station has caused commuter chaos on Wednesday morning. Police arrested a 38-year-old Drouin man at the scene, who they said appeared to be drunk. He was taken to the Dandenong Police Station. It’s understood a number of trains were cancelled as a result but a Metro spokesperson has since confirmed trains were running by 10am. One witness was forced to wait 40 minutes at Officer Station until the next available train to transport her to Pakenham Station. Upon arriving at Pakenham, the witness reported a large police presence, with a man in handcuffs on the platform between officers. “He was yelling, he wasn’t hysterical but I thought he seemed angry that he had been detained,“ she said. It’s understood an announcement said there was a police operation underway in Berwick and a trespasser in Pakenham.

New play area for region By Jessica Anstice A new state-of-the-art park will officially open in Pakenham on Saturday 26 October. Deep Creek Reserve is set to be a place of environmental and recreational significance within Cardinia, and the location of one of the area's best all-abilities play spaces. The community is invited to celebrate the opening on site, at the end of Cameron Way from 10am to 1pm. The day will allow residents to learn about the new and exciting space, as well as take part in a number of family-friendly activities. On display will be Cardinia Shire Council's waste team's worm farm, a Cardinia Environment Coalition pop-up stall and the Royal Botanic Gardens bandicoot promotion. For the kids, there will be face painting a native animal demonstration. A free sausage sizzle will also commence at 12pm and the Pakenham Golf Club will be operating the cafe throughout the day. The reserve now boasts the Deep Creek Environment Centre, a multi-user shared facility that will promote ecology, education and sport. It also includes an all-abilities playground, sand and water play area, shelters and barbecues, a kick-about area, new golf club rooms, wetlands, sensory gardens, an indigenous plant nursery, solar lighting, footpaths and a car park. Cardinia Mayor Graeme Moore encouraged all residents to visit the new reserve, which will enable community members of all ages to meet, play, learn and play in the parklands. "Council is thrilled to invite the community to the opening of Deep Creek Reserve, which is sure to become a must-visit destination in Cardinia Shire," Cr Moore said. After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

Leaders stand to say ‘no’ By Mitchell Clarke Over 100 community leaders united at the Cardinia Cultural Centre for the Together We Can summit on Thursday 10 October to envision a community which is safe and free from violence. As reported by the Gazette last week, statistics from the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) show family violence incidents are again on the rise, up 22.5 percent, with 1312 reported instances between July 2018 and June 2019. But the issue isn't limited to Cardinia. Nationally, gender inequality contributes to the murder of one Australian woman almost every week. Every two minutes, Australian police are called to a case of domestic violence, equating to 657 times a day, every day of the year. With a mission of putting an end to these figures, Together We Can (TWC) is a community led initiative which utilises the collective effort of the shire to protect the rights of all residents to feel safe where they work, live, learn and play. TWC collective impact facilitator Fiona Cost was pleased with the summit, calling it a "hugely successful" event. "It was so encouraging seeing so many community leaders come together with the same passion and enthusiasm to be part of the solution to stop, prevent and end family violence in Cardinia shire," Ms Cost said. "We've had enough, we're working on solutions to make a difference, we're really looking at the root causes of family violence and trying to change those attitudes and behaviours that unfortunately encourage people to be violent with one another." Cardinia mayor Graeme Moore opened proceedings and said the TWC initiative was a testament to the ongoing commitment to families within the shire. "Family violence and violence against women is still a reality in our community. There is no simple solution. There is no quick fix," Cr Moore said. "We all know there is never an excuse for violence. But the challenge lies in changing the attitudes and behaviours that allow violence to occur in the first instance. "Society has changed significantly over the past 100 years and some of the attitudes and social values that were once acceptable are now recognised as disempowering and disrespectful for women." Speakers acknowledged that nobody was immune to violence, but it was far more likely that men were perpetrators and women were victims. Guest speaker Phil Barker, author of 'The Revolution of Man', captured audiences with his powerful talk on the relationship between masculinity, mental health and family violence while Outlook's Anne McCormick and Michael Wright shone a light on the issues surrounding people with disabilities. The event highlighted that while gender inequality is a multi-generational and complex issue that won't be fixed overnight, conversations are paramount in creating equal and respectful communities where violence against women is unthinkable.

Why buy next to the tip? I am sick of hearing members of Casey Council and other people whinge about the tip on Hallam Road. We have lived in the same house on Pound Road for nearly 46 years and that tip was there long before houses and people. So

I ask the question, 'Why did they buy a house next to a tip?' Back in 1974 it was a sand quarry and I worked there until 1976 when it got sold to Ready Mix. Hallam Road was a gravel road with trees and bushes on both sides and not a house to be seen. I never complain because I
used common sense and bought our house on Pound Road. After I left the quarry I worked in another sand quarry in Clayton, which is now closed. It was also a tip but you won't see houses only factories, nobody lives in a factory. Hampton Park resident

Casey’s crime rate up By Brendan Rees Just over four burglaries and more than 20 thefts occurred day on average over the past 12 months in Casey, latest crime statistics have revealed. Police also detected 726 weapons and explosives offences which were up 11.6 compared to last year. Overall recorded offences in Casey went up 2.9 per cent in the 12 months to June, with deceptions more than doubling, according to a Crime Statistics Agency report, Victoria Police Deputy commissioner Shane Patton police were focusing on home invasions, carjackings and robberies across the state. "These are opportunistic crimes. We believe we've got our policing model right," he said.
Deputy Commissioner Patton said it was "about tracking them (offenders) down," adding they "embark on what I would call a spree and then stay on it for days until we actually get them." He said Operation Tidal, a high visibility police presence across the Casey, Greater Dandenong and Cardinia police service areas, was making "great inroads" with 543 arrests since the operation started and more than 187 warrants executed. Deputy Commissioner Patton said aggravated burglaries remained "largely stable" and police were targeting home invasion offenders. "The overwhelming majority of non-aggravated burglaries; they do not involve any form of violence and less than two per cent of them
are confrontational. I don't say that to diminish the crime, it's come down slightly and we want it to come down more," he said. Alarmingly in Casey, there were 7,538 assaults in the year period - more than 144 a week. And more than 20 drug use and possession offences a week. Robberies went up marginally by 44 offences. On the decline were assaults (2.2 per cent), burglaries (5.2 per cent), and property damage (1.8 per cent) compared to last year. Deputy Commissioner Patton said the crime data did however show the lowest victimisation rate, a decrease of 1.5 per cent but emphasised they were not "just statistics ... the reality is we know these are people, these are victims of crime." "We know there's a lot more for us to do and
will continue to try and target the offending to make it a safer community," he said. Police and Emergecy Services Minister Lisa Neville said although police were "processing more offenders than ever," family violence was on the rise, making up "almost 50 per cent of crimes against the person." Gembrook MP Brad Battin said crime in Casey was "out of control" and called on the State Government to build a new police station in Casey. "When it comes to aggravated burglary Casey has the unenviable position of the highest number offences in the state," he said. "Even our police are not safe with 80 reports of assaults on police and emergency service workers in the City of Casey," adding "how can Daniel Andrews spruik all is all ok?"
Slow moo-ver Clyde the runaway cow now living on clover By Mitchell Clarke A steer affectionately named Clyde who caused peak hour chaos on the Monash is destined to spend the rest of his days in lush green paddocks. Traffic was brought to a standstill as authorities worked to coerce the rogue bovine away from a certain death near Clyde Road at 6.30am on Friday 11 October. Almost three hours later, wildlife carers were able to put a rope around the steer and secure him to a fence before loading it onto a trailer just before 10am. Clyde is now recovering in the hands of a wildlife carer in Emerald as authorities launch an investigation as to how the animal found himself dicing with death on one of the state’s busiest freeways. It’s believed the animal jumped from a truck which could have been on its way to an abattoir, but authorities are also investigating whether he escaped from nearby farms. A Warriors 4 Wildlife spokesperson told the Gazette the cow suffered quite a lot of bruising and bleeding from the wild adventure. “We’re confident he’s going to make a full recovery, if he had any serious injuries he’d likely be down by now,” she said. An eyewitness who drove past the scene reported the animal looking “miserable and confused”. “He was just stood at the fence with the police behind him yelling at motorists. His eyes were closed and he had blood on him,” he said. “There were obviously a lot of motorists keen to see what was going on. “Hopefully the authorities do the right thing and allow the animal to live a happy life on a sanctuary.” Traffic controller Rickii Hard was the first on scene and called VicRoads immediately. “The police thought it wasn’t well but I thought it just seemed tired, like it had been on a mission to get to where it was,” he said. He hoped the animal wouldn’t be destroyed claiming it looked like it just needed a “good

While Clyde’s bravery may have saved him his life, an investigation will determine how this very large mis-steak occurred.

Help name new streets in Casey Be part of Casey history by naming a street, road, way, court, drive, avenue and boulevard in one of the City's new estate developments. Council has teamed up with developers Mirvac and is throwing it out to the people to help come up with possible street names for Smiths Lane, which is now selling in Clyde North. Coming up with streets names can be a challenge for developers and council with so many themes and words already in use and strict rules in place about what can and can't be used. Since opening it up to the community in late September, council has received more than 150 submissions - however more are needed before 27 October. Some of the themes that have come through so far include African animal names, historical women of Casey, Casey Girl Guide leaders, names of flowers in the estate, Cranbourne Cup winners and local market gardener surnames. Casey mayor, Amanda Stapledon encouraged the community to get on board, get creative, and throw some more ideas into the mix.
Casey Council is calling on the community help name new streets for a new estate in Clyde North. Here's some tips to help you along the way: more obscure the better, as council needs names that haven't been used in Casey before. Think about connections to Casey, it's natural environment and history. Why not think of a theme and come up with heaps of suggestions that relate - we need hundreds of names, so don't just limit your

suggestion to one. You might like to come up with a group of names under the one theme and name a whole area of the estate. There are some rules around street names which can be found on council's website - but don't overthink it. Just throw in your ideas and council will do the rest. A 23-year-old man has been charged following two aggravated burglaries in Narre Warren and Berwick. Police allege a car was stolen during a burglary that occurred on Donatello Crescent in Narre Warren on Monday 7 October in the early hours of the morning. It is also alleged the same offender stole a car, BMX and the victim's handbag during an aggravated burglary on Kerferd Street in Berwick on Wednesday 9 October. Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged the Berwick man with 13 charges, including two counts of theft of motor vehicle, two counts of aggravated burglary - person present, possess cannabis and other related offences. He has been remanded in custody to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on Thursday 10 October. This arrest is part of Operation Tidal which utilises a highly visible police presence across the Casey, Greater Dandenong and Cardinia Police Service Areas (PSAs). Tidal is an ongoing operation and police will continue to focus resources where they're most needed.
CCTV catches crims stealing grog Detectives from Casey Crime Investigation Unit are seeking help from the public following a burglary at a Berwick restaurant in August. Investigators have been told two people broke into the premises on High Street about 12.50am on Tuesday 24 September. Once inside the pair stole cash and used a shopping trolley and milk crates to remove a large quantity of alcohol, police say. Detectives have released images and CCTV of two people they believe may be able to assist with their inquires. Motorcyclist dies A motorcyclist has died following a crash in Clyde on Sunday 13 October. Investigators have been told a motorcycle was travelling north along the South Gippsland Highway about 4pm. A car crossing the highway from Clyde-Five Ways Road has collided with the motorcycle. The rider, believed to be a man in his 40s, died at the scene. The male driver of the car is assisting police with their enquires. Narre Warren's Foundation Learning Centre has united to celebrate its rich culture as part of City of Casey's Ageing Positively Festival. Members of the community as well as English and additional language students at the centre gathered to enjoy an afternoon of interesting conversation, multicultural games, dancing, music and fabulous food for the centre's Cultures in Unison event on Thursday 10 October. "This event was so much fun and so important for our centre and community," literacy coordinator Clea Nicol said. "People of different cultures and ages who may not otherwise have the opportunity to meet enjoyed participating in activities together in a relaxed atmosphere," she said, adding "life experience is an education in itself". "The participants were very interested to find out about each other's cultural backgrounds - Afghanistan, India , the Netherlands, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Germany, Pakistan and Australia were all represented," Ms Nicol added. The group also played marbles and hit the piñata with "a lot of gusto." The Afghani and Pakistani students also brought their cultural food to share. The Foundation Learning Centre's Share and care group meet every Thursday morning and enjoy a variety of activities including crafts and off-site outings. A variety of English language classes are also offered.

By Danielle Kutchel A love story that began on a glitzy night in Dandenong has just celebrated its 60th chapter. Val and Graeme Pownceby are still very much in love, six decades down the track, and are proud of their milestone and their life together. Now living in Narre warren, they met at a dance at the Dandenong Scout Hall one Wednesday night when they were both 17. Asked if they remember what they thought when they first saw each other, Graeme grins and chuckles, "I'll tell you that later!" Val admits she had her eye on someone else on the day, but he wasn't interested in her. Graeme asked her for a dance, and the rest is history. "We went together for about two and a half, three years. My parents said we could never get married until we turned 21. My sister did the right thing, but they loved Graeme so much they weakened and so we got married when I was only 20," she reminisces. Graeme's best friend since kindergarten was the best man, and they all still catch up each week for a drink and some nibbles, six decades later. It's a respected tradition in the two households, and Graeme says you have to have a good excuse to get out of it. Two boys came along soon after the wedding, with a bit of a gap before their youngest, a daughter, was born. Graeme worked as a cabinet maker for his whole life, right up until his retirement. Val worked as a secretary for a debt collector before leaving the workforce, but went back in later years to work in catering for the racing industry, where she stayed for 28 years. They now have five beautiful grandkids, and hope that great-grandkids will be along in the future. In 60 years, the couple says they have never had a big fight. "Any day now!" Graeme jokes. Asked what the secret to a happy marriage is, Graeme says that every night, they would have a drink between 4.00pm and 5.00pm, sit-

"It only lasted 20 minutes, but it was every night and we liked doing that," Val explains. Now retired, the couple enjoys travelling first in a caravan but now on cruise ships that take them to ports around the world.
And their passion for one another is still just as strong as it was in the heady early days of their courtship. "We've done a lot, and we're happy. I still love him," Val says with a soft smile, and Graeme softly agrees.
Ambitious target set to beat killer cancer By Danielle Kutchel "The world definitely changed that day, and not for good." That's how Cranbourne resident Tracey Ryan recalls the day she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, back in 2010. Aged just 47 at the time, her life and those of her family and friends were turned upside down. While she lives with her diagnosis, she says you don't ever come to terms with advanced cancer. "It's always there. I go to bed with it, I wake up with it. I don't get a break from cancer," Ms Ryan says. Following her diagnosis, Ms Ryan underwent chemotherapy and a double mastectomy. But the cancer metastasised to her bones, liver, and lungs and her diagnosis is now terminal. Just before Mother's Day 2018, she had her left lung removed due to the discovery of a new primary cancer. "My body is getting very tired. It's telling me it's had enough, I think," she says. Although she can't work, Ms Ryan fills her days with charity work, promoting breast cancer awareness. She's lending her voice to National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which began on 1 October. New data from the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) shows that 30,000 more lives could be lost to breast cancer by 2030 without adequate research investment. The data also shows that a woman's risk of breast cancer is now one in seven, up from one in eight last year. Eight women die every day from the disease, which is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia. NBCF has set an ambitious target of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. The organisation will also fund a significant amount of research into the most aggressive breast cancer subtypes to improve detection and treatment, particularly in metastatic and triple-negative breast cancers. In addition, top fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands have teamed up with NBCF during Breast Cancer Awareness month to raise additional much-needed funds for research by donating proceeds from the sale of special edition pink products. Ms Ryan says women - and men - need to be vigilant and check for signs of breast cancer,
and follow their instincts if they feel something isn't right. "Don't take no for an answer. You know your body better than anyone. If you don't feel it's right, keep going until someone listens." She also recommends people of all genders make a habit of checking their breasts on the first of the month, every month. But most of all, she wants people to live life while they can. "We used to stress the small stuff before I got sick and worry about what bills were getting paid, but now, we enjoy life. People shouldn't wait until they get sick to start living. Life's too damn short."

Community input sought St John of God Health Care is giving the community the opportunity to share their thoughts around health care services to be offered at Gibb Street, Berwick. A community forum will be held on Tuesday 22 October and will allow members of the community to voice their opinions, ideas and concerns about healthcare in Melbourne's south east. St John of God Health Care has always prioritised meeting the needs of the community and has upheld this track record since the Sisters of St John of God emigrated to rural Western Australia from Ireland in 1895, responding to a call for help after severe outbreaks of typhoid. Fast forward to 2019 and St John of God Health Care are once again looking to establish the ever-changing health care requirements of its community and respond with new and growing facilities to service those needs. Locally in Berwick, the Gibb Street location was the original home of St John of God Berwick Hospital and was first established as a private hospital, then called Shepton Private Hospital, in 1910. In 2018 the Berwick hospital moved to its new and bigger facility at Kangan Drive, leaving Gibb Street vacant with a huge potential for new services.
Residents are invited to come along to the community forum and share what's important to them and their family, from the ways their family's health care needs will change in the years to come and what services and facilities they will need, to considering the distances travelled to access city based services that they would like to see offered closer to home. Community consultation was vital in the development of the new St John of God Berwick Hospital and resulted in the opening of Casey-Cardinia's first Cardio Vascular Catheter Laboratory and Intensive Care Unit. It's time to reach out again, share ideas and help shape the future of health care closer to home. Mackenzie rides to glory During the last school holidays Year 12 student Mackenzie Bright represented Hillcrest Christian College at her final Equestrian Interschool Nationals held in Sydney. Mackenzie took two horses with her to compete and the school can now boast that is has the Senior Novice National Champion attending the college! Mackenzie and Missy placed 1st and 2nd achieving overall Champion. Mackenzie also placed 3rd in her Advanced Freestyle and 5th in 5b and 3rd in 5c to come home 4th overall in the Advanced Championship. This level is something Mackenzie has worked even harder for than her Novice win, riding against some fancy imported horses. “We are extremely proud of Mackenzie as we know the whole Bright family are. We wish her all the best for her future endeavours which are sure to bring further success,“ said head of Hillcrest Christian College Dr Gregg Weaver.

Art expo Cranbourne The West Gippsland Group of the Country Women's Association will be holding their annual craft exhibition from 18-19 October at the Cranbourne Public Hall. On display will be baked items, hand crafts, jams and preserves, knitting, photography, dressmaking and more available. Halloween at the Old Cheese Factory The Old Cheese Factory Berwick will become a spooky playground for this year's Halloween Trick or Treat Spectacular, where the kids will participate in a trick or treat scavenger hunt. Mega Community Garage Sale It's time to snap up a bargain as Warneet-Blind Bight fire brigade gets ready for its 13th annual Mega Community Garage Sale on Saturday 19 October at 8am. When Liam Bradley Wilson was born prematurely at just 24 weeks and three days on 24 January 2019 he was given a baby elephant mascot labelled 'small but mighty.' "In the first three days of life he was labelled the smallest but not the sickest," his mum Louise McNaughton of Lyndhurst said. "The days after that so much changed and we were on the worst rollercoaster ride of our lives. "On the 31st of January 2019, Liam grew his angel wings at 1.25pm safely nestled in his mummy and daddy's arms," she said. The nurses, doctors and Ronald McDonald House were supportive during their stay. In memory of their son, Lisa and her partner Kleat Wilson will take part in the Walk for Prems at Albert Park Lake on Sunday 27 October. Thousands of families across Australia will walk together in support of the 48,000 premature or sick babies born in Australia every year. It's the largest annual fundraiser for the Life's Little Treasures Foundation, Australia's foremost charity dedicated to supporting the families of babies born sick or prior to 37 weeks gestation. "Unfortunately for us our prem story is not a happily ever after, Liam was sadly one of the babies modern medicine couldn't save," Ms McNaughton said. She has already raised more than $600 for Life's Little Treasures Foundation in the lead up to the 5km walk and designed t-shirts which display 'I'm a walk warrior.' "I'm not a designer by trade but I'm giving it a crack," she said. Dr Simon Fraser, medical director with a private health insurer, said: "Prematurity can cause significant financial, emotional and psychological hardship to families ... particularly if they have no supports," she said.

Locals on the world stage By Russell Bennett A prodigiously talented group of local boxers will go wherever, whenever to meet their next challenge head-on. An Australian team headed by teenage boxers Ethan Bernades and Antonio Lopez, along with their renowned trainer Nathan Skeen - all three from Pakenham’s ‘Urban Boxer’ gym has recently returned from competing in Dublin, Ireland at the famed Smithfield Boxfest. The invitation-only tournament has a proud tradition of attracting world class competitors from right across Europe and countries with a strong boxing heritage. The multi-national event is part of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association’s (IABA) national events calendar, and just a matter of days ago the Australian team headed up by Skeen returned from a journey of a lifetime. Also featuring in the team were three other standout Victorian boxers - Campbell Somerville, Lachlan Lewis, and Jarvis Bindloss. Skeen’s boxers have a hard-earned reputation based off a tireless work-rate and thirst for success. They know they won’t ever be treated with kid gloves at Urban Boxer - that the time they spend there is all geared towards making them the best amateur fighters they can be. And the gym’s reputation for fostering promising talent and converting it into proven success is there for all to see. In recent times, Urban Boxer fighters have also competed right across Victoria, in South Australia, the ACT, and New Zealand - with their latest frontier their training base in London, before competing in Dublin. “You have the likes of Russia, the Ukraine, England, Ireland, and Latvia all competing at Smithfield, and this was the first time Australia had ever featured in the event so we were thrilled to fly that flag,” said Skeen, who has extensive experience in the ring, himself - both at amateur and professional level in Australia, and also the UK. He started boxing when he was just 14 - the same age as a number of his proteges are now and ultimately went on to train under some of the biggest names in the fight game, including John Tandy and Ian Burbedge in the UK, and the legendary Johnny Lewis in Sydney. Lewis is the former trainer of world champions Jeff Fenech and Kostya Tszyu. Bernades is a Victorian champion who will soon compete in the nationals on the Gold Coast, alongside Lopez who has also earned his way there - despite having just a handful of fights to his name so far. “He really did himself proud - he fought a Russian and lost by unanimous decision but gave him a hell of a fight,” Skeen said about Lopez, who’s only just starting to scratch the surface of his potential. “Ethan, who only has 13 fights to his name as well, boxed beautifully and was named Junior Boxer of the Tournament. “He’s a real power-packed combination puncher.” Lewis and Bindloss fight out of a Leongatha gym that Urban Boxer also has particularly close ties with, and both of them also fought superbly on foreign soil - as did Somerville, an

Australian Commonwealth Games and worldlevel representative. “We were named Team of the Tournament at Smithfield too, which was fantastic,” Skeen said with obvious pride. “Last year the Ukrainians took their national side to compete at this event, for example. “This is a serious event, so for our boys to know they belong at the level is a massive positive for them. “Ethan is still only 14 and a bottom-age junior, but he’s racked up an amazing amount of experience already and that’s only going to hold him in great stead as he moves forward with his boxing. “We went to New Zealand and won the Auckland Cup, and he’s come home and boxed in Canberra, and in Bendigo he beat the best kid in Australia at the (Jeff) Horn - (Michael) Zerafa weekend. “You can see he’s a real standout - the volume punches he throws, the combinations the head movement, there’s just a touch of class in everything he does.” On the trip to the UK, Skeen explained how his fighters learned so much from the more experienced, 22-year-old Somerville - his discipline and dedication, as much as his in-ring craft. Not only will Bernades and Lopez compete for Victoria in the nationals later this month, but Skeen will also serve for the first time as a state coach - validation for the countless hours of tireless hard work they’ve put in at Urban Boxer.

The Swans show their upside despite their latest loss By Nick Creely After the Swans' poor showing in their opening round Victorian Premier Cricket clash against Prahran, the theme of the week down at CaseySouth Melbourne was all about backing their own strengths, and quickly moving on to the next challenge. While Saturday's loss to Geelong at Kardinia Park saw the Swans slump to 0-2, there was plenty of upside ahead of an already vitally important double-header this Saturday and Sunday. Positivity was always going to be the key for the Swans with the bat after being bundled out for just 45 in the season-opener at home. And they did just that, with openers Dev Pollock and debutant Aaron Fernando in a positive mood with the blade. Finding the boundaries when needed, and rotating the strike, the pair notched up 98 runs
for the first wicket in the opening 20 overs, before a double-strike from Joel Blain (2/48) removed Fernando for a promising 36 and Pollock for 55. After a strong finish with the ball in Round 1, Brett Forsyth sent Footscray in and straight away the changes to the approach with the ball were noticeable. Suraj Randiv took the second over of the match and was immediately on the money, having Dogs superstar Dean Russ searching for bat on ball and not finding it from the spinner's early line and length. Round 2 of the Casey Softball Association dawned with great playing conditions. The junior competition started for the under-13s and under-15s, with a number of children taking to the diamond for their first game. In the under13s, the Cobras beat Berwick 10-5 and the Royal Falcons and Doveton drew 8-8 in a thriller. It was a great result for the Royal Falcons - a brand new team filled with first gamers. The under-15s saw Cobras Grey defeat Berwick 15-0, and Doveton defeat Cobras Maroon 15-5. In Open Women 2 Berwick Cheyenne defeated Casey 12-6, and Young Guns defeated Doveton 14-10 in a tight one. Last weekend the Casey Softball Association sent three teams to the junior development softball tournament in Mt Barker, South Australia. After a four-month training program, more than 30 children headed to the rolling hills of outer Adelaide to represent the Casey Softball Association at the annual Labour Day junior tournament. The Casey development program aimed to introduce new players to the sport, together with further developing the skills of experienced players in a tournament atmosphere. In weather that ranged from mid-30s heat to persistent drizzle, Casey's young softballers showed great resilience as they fought hard throughout nine games over the three-day weekend. As the Casey under-12 girls were the only entrant in their age group, they were required to compete in the under-14 girls competition. Casey’s junior softballers are showing huge potential. es Jenny Joynson and Heath Lewis ensured that the girls took to the diamond with smiles and displayed terrific character, revelling in the small victories. The team improved consistently over the weekend, and the girls wore their bruises as badges of honour. The under-14 mixed team fought hard all weekend against strong opposition. Some members of the team had never played a game of softball prior to the tournament, but were supported by their more experienced teammates, who further developed their skills in unfamiliar fielding positions or in tactical plays. Coaches Margie Steendam, Kerry Laird and Chaminda Fernando lead a boisterous but encouraging team who played their games with plenty of spirit. Casey's under-16 girls team featured a mix of younger players and experienced veterans. While the girls, coached by Tony Black and Kylie Whitecunas, did not manage to score a win during the tournament, their terrific team spirit was infections and inspired the coach to showcase his dance moves during the musical warmups. All members of the team gained valuable experience to set them in good stead for the upcoming season.
