Lifeline for locals Bk 2 Basics aims to provide essential grocery, clothing and household items through their ‘grocery-like’ warehouse.

But Kelly’s role often goes beyond the warehouse.

As an accessible charitable organisation, Bk 2 Basics also aids those fleeing from violent and dangerous situations, from family violence victims to those living without a home.

“Sometimes, I’ll be sitting at a police station at two in the morning with a domestic violence

victim where they’ve run away and said, ‘hey can you come and support me?’”, said Kelly.

“Or they don’t even know me, but they’ve just heard things on Facebook, and it’ll be my first meeting with them and stuff.

“And of course, I go”.

“Just the other night, we were at the hospital until four in the morning with a homeless person that had got beaten up by some guy walking out of a nightclub in the middle of Melbourne.”

For Kelly, 2025 also brought many hardships,

from the council placing strict regulations on the charity’s operations, to taking the council’s decision to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

While they won the appeal, Kelly does reflect on the process as costly and stressful, but with the help of her husband Craig and children, as well as her steadfast volunteers, she was able to come through it stronger.

For many Casey residents, 2025 was a year that brought with it, a rising cost of living — and what followed was a food insecurity and homelessness crisis witnessed by so many non-profit organisations all over the region.

Train disruptions for Pakenham line There will be disruptions to train services on several metropolitan lines in the south-east and for Gippsland V/Line services this week, as Metro Trains crews carry out essential maintenance works.

Buses will replace trains from 8.30pm Wednesday, 7 January until the last service on Sunday, 11 January: on the Sandringham Line between Parliament and Sandringham on the Frankston Line between Parliament and Caulfield

Trains on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines will run direct to and from Flinders Street, not via the City Loop, from Thursday, 8 January until the last service on Sunday, 11 January.

Buses will replace evening trains on sections of the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines on Wednesday, 7 January and Thursday, 8 January.

Coaches will replace trains on the Bairnsdale and Traralgon lines between Southern Cross and East Pakenham from the evening of Wednesday, 7 January until the last service on Sunday, 11 January.

Passengers are asked to allow extra time, and to check the Transport Victoria website to plan their journey. Temporary V/Line coach timetables are available for download.

Works being conducted during this time include sleeper and track renewals at Hampton, overhead works, Richmond and South Yarra station maintenance, and vegetation clearance.

Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad have charged a woman following a fatal house fire in Clyde North last month.

A 29-year-old woman taken to hospital under police guard has been charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder.

She was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

The charges follow an incident where emergency services were called to reports of a fire and people injured at the Sunburnt Circuit property about 1.45am on Thursday, 18 December.

Two men, aged 46 and 44, were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The 44-year-old man died from his later that evening.

The 46-year-old remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Police are investigating an incident in Springvale, after five vehicles were damaged by a brick in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Greater Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit detectives have been told by observers that three youths were seen throwing the bricks from an overpass on the Princes Highway just before 1am.

Two out of the five cars were significantly damaged, with the bricks going through the windscreens.

One female occupant of a vehicle required medical treatments from paramedics after receiving glass fragments to her eyes.

Detective Senior Constable Simon Jacobs, said that such behaviour was harmful and can have “serious and potentially fatal consequences”.

“We are extremely fortunate that only one person sustained minor injuries, as the outcome could have been far worse,” said Constable Jacobs.

“I strongly urge those responsible to come forward, take responsibility for their actions, and show some compassion for the person who was injured.”

Police also reported that a number of vehicles received punctured tyres due to the debris on the road.

No arrests have been made, but police are urging for anyone with information to come forward, call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit crimestoppersvic.com.au.

“For the first time in three years, $76,000 later, which is a shame, because that $76,000 could have gone towards the community.”

A FoodBank Hunger report released in November cited the feeling of embarrassment as a main barrier preventing people from seeking assistance — a stigma that Kelly’s charity is working hard to tackle.

To accommodate those who may feel weary or nervous about coming into the charity, Kelly often allows them to come in earlier, when the warehouse is quiet.

“We get them in before we open and they shop before everyone gets here,” she said.

it feels like to have anxiety over things that are out of someone’s control – taking her back to her cancer diagnoses where her anxiety led to sleepless nights.

“Because I know what anxiety is like,” said Kelly.

“I got anxiety after I got cancer. Never had anxiety in my life. And I remember when I got told about the cancer, and I just couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t sleep. I thought the cancer had moved to my lungs.

“So yeah, we let those anxious people come in before we open.”

“And when people message and go, ‘I’m so embarrassed’, I go, never be embarrassed…

“I never wanted people to feel like that and to feel embarrassed. I want them to feel welcomed

and that’s what people do here,” For Kelly, the charity instils a sense of community that transcends the walls of the warehouse on Vesper Drive.

From organising food bags for firefighters battling the 2020 Black Summer fires to donating thousands of toys to households struggling during the Christmas period and to organising Christmas dinners where anyone who wants can attend.

Already, in December 2025, Bk 2 Basics was able to obtain a third warehouse for storage and increased capacity, and as they continue their generosity into 2026, Kelly will continue to lean on her community, including her family, friends and fellow Bk 2 Basics volunteers.

As you enter the Bk 2 Basics warehouse in the early hours of a Friday morning, Kelly Warren and her volunteers are already hard at work.

There’s a line of people with empty bags entering their food warehouse, but rest assured, they never leave empty handed.

It’s loud — from people, some strangers, chatting away as they pick their groceries, to delivery trucks donating a range of different items.

Walking in, a volunteer encourages someone perusing the pallet of fresh vegetables to “take as much” as they need.

In the wake of grappling food insecurity and lack of affordability, Kelly’s ground up organisation aims to fill a small gap among Casey’s struggling community — instilling a lifeline for many who are struggling.

According to a 2024 annual household survey, nearly 40 per cent of residents in Casey experience food insecurity, some cutting back on weekly grocery shopping and others skipping meals altogether.

But 2025 brought its obstacles to the non-profit from strict permits and regulations instated by the council to appealing the motion to Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

The idea for Bk 2 Basics, began in 2013 after Kelly and her family migrated from New Zealand with her children and limited funds in their pockets.

Inspired by her daughter who was eight at the time and who would take extra food from her home pantry to give to those who would go to school with no lunch.

“We had no name on the street. We were just a family helping, with friends, people off social media coming to help volunteer,” explained Kelly.

“And we thought of ‘Back 2 Basics’ and we started in our carport, feeding about 50 to 100 families a week.”

Kelly Warren’s charity has now expanded to multiple warehouses on Vesper Drive in Narre Warren, but not without many hurdles.

Back in 2019, the Casey council told the charity to shut its carport system down due to not meeting planning scheme requirements and complaints in the area.

But not long after, a generous donation from a Dandenong businessman allowed them to work from a Narre Warren Warehouse on Vesper Drive.

It was not long after that the pandemic hit, and as most charitable food providers shut their doors, Bk 2 Basics kept working for the community and they acquired a second warehouse next door.

In 2025, they were again at risk of being forced to shut their doors for good after the council placed rigid restrictions around how the charity was permitted to operate.

At a council meeting, it granted the charity permission to operate, but with limits to delivery traffic, waste storage, car parking and a complete ban on selling from its op-shop — limits that Kelly says were too difficult to meet.

In fighting back, Kelly took the matter to VCAT, appealing the decision by the council.

And in November, they were told that the charity had won the appeal.

A crucial year for council

By Jensy Callimootoo After a 12-month stint starting in November 2024, the two State appointed monitors that were responsible for overseeing the newly elected Casey Council finished up their term in November 2025.

The municipal monitors, Peter Stephenson and Cameron Boardman, were appointed by the State Government to oversee the council in ensuring good governance under the Local Government Act 2020.

Casey Manager of Communications and Corporate Governance, Chloe Casey, told Star News back in November, that the total cost of the monitor’s tenure over their 12-month term cost ratepayers over $210,000.

Under the Local Government Act 2020, the monitors are responsible for observing governance processes as well as provide advice to councils that are experiencing governance issues and make recommendations to local government minister, MP Nick Staikos for further action.

The role also includes observing and overseeing the functions of a council as well as the mechanisms of its operation and aiding them in getting back on track.

Typically, a report on the monitor’s findings and recommendations is released by Local Government Victoria after the monitor’s end of term, but it is still unclear when Casey’s final report will be made public The instating of the monitors followed a series of events within the Casey Council that saw an investigation by the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC), prompted by allegations of “serious corrupt conduct in relation to planning and property development decisions at the City of Casey council.”

Former Mayor Sameh Aziz and fellow elected councillors were dismissed by the State Government after allegations of corruption and poor governance, after the watchdog investigation alleged there had been over $1 million in political donations from developer, John Woodman,

The investigation and revelations prompted the Victorian government to implement reforms to the planning system to increase transparency and accountability.

And back in September 2025, Aziz faced charges for five offences, including receiving secret commissions, misuse of position and mis-

conduct in public office.

Woodman was also charged.

Three administrators were responsible for guiding the council until 2024, where 12 councillors were elected to begin leading the council.

Many, including Casey’s Mayor Stefan Koomen, remarked on the departure of the moni-

tors as a “new chapter”.

“This marks the beginning of a new chapter for Casey,” said the Mayor in a media release in November.

“We are proud to serve our community. With the support of our residents, we are excited about the many great things we can achieve for the Casey community.”

Council’s ‘naughty list’

By Violet Li Casey Council’s Unreasonable Complainant Conduct (UCC) policy stood out in 2025 as its application to residents sparked concern over how community voices are managed within local government.

Local resident and mother of three Jillian Nambu discovered she had been placed on Casey Council’s UCC Register after sending a handful of emails to councillors and executives, which sent her into shock, confusion, and distress.

“It made me feel like I had done something so horrible that I must be put on a register,” she told Star News then.

Council documents show the UCC policy exists to manage complaints that are deemed repetitive, demanding, or excessively burdensome for staff, a practice supported in part by guidance from the Victorian Ombudsman on good complaint management.

But Ms Nambu and a community advocate argue the policy, in this case, may have overreached.

Ms Nambu’s placement on the register came after she sent no more than five emails in one week, raising concerns about issues including youth services, council meeting procedures, and public question time.

Council classified her correspondence as “unreasonable persistence” and “unreasonable demands,” mainly because she contacted multiple councillors and executives directly rather than going through the council’s customer service system.

According to the notification she received, the council expected residents to use a centralised service channel to ensure efficient handling of enquiries, a point that Ms Nambu strongly disputed.

She said her intention was simply to participate in local democracy and raise issues relevant to her community.

“People are told in writing if any restrictions are placed on them, why it’s happening, and how they can ask for a review. Being on the register usually lasts for a year and is reviewed annually,” she said then.

When asked how many people had been placed under the UCC Register, Casey did not share the number.

Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association (CRRA) criticised Casey Council for placing the mother-of-three on ‘an orchestrated resident naughty list’.

President Anthony Tassone argued that such a register should be reserved for only the ‘most extreme and overly persistent complainants’.

“On the one hand, we have individual councillors inviting residents to contact them directly to hear their concerns and queries, and on the other hand, we have Council management demanding residents go through central Customer Service and not contact councillors directly,” he told Star News then.

“It’s a reasonable expectation that residents can engage with their ward Councillor directly in the appropriate way, and the council’s use of the ‘unreasonable complainant’ register appears unreasonable.

“The council should also offer to reach out to

residents directly and guide them through the best way to engage with the City of Casey to have queries resolved rather than just red-flagging them and putting them on a list.”

The policy has also drawn attention to how other councils handle complaints.

Greater Dandenong Council, for example, confirmed it currently does not keep anyone on a complaint exclusion list, and encourages residents with repeated concerns to use the Ombudsman.

Ms Nambu was calling for a review of the UCC policy ahead of its compulsory review in 2028.

Local law causes a stir

By Jensy Callimootoo It was a rocky start to 2025 for the Casey Council, as the first monthly meeting brought with it confused and upset locals — along with loud opinions about Casey’s Local Law Act. Confusion surrounding the local laws began to fester during the Christmas period of 2024, where Casey resident, Tom Kapitany, who owns a property in Devon Meadow, shared information from the council’s webpage regarding permits needed for certain activities on private land. to this information, Casey residents would need a permit when storing or repairing a recreational vehicle; storing a shipping container and storing unregistered vehicles for up to 90 days, as well as storing unregistered vehicles, for up to 90 days.

It also outlined that a permit would be needed when putting up temporary dwellings and when dismantling, repairing or serving a non-commercial vehicle on private land.

The outrage prompted a petition calling for the abolition of the permit requirements for private land use in Casey and in January 2025, it had gained nearly 15,000 signatures.

Almost a week after the backlash, the council released its first media statement saying that inaccurate information regarding the council’s private land use permit had been published online and as a result, its customer service department had been subjected to threatening behaviour.

But locals were quick to defend their confusion regarding the matter, highlighting that the alleged misinformation that was being circulated was attributed to Casey’s own webpage.

Locals also found further inconsistencies between the information provided on the webpage and the information regarding permits in the Casey Community Local Law 2023.

On 7 January 2025, came the council’s second media statement, acknowledging the inconsistent wording on its own website.

“Our residents do not need a permit to do minor maintenance on their car on private property, for example, an oil change or belt change,” it stated.

But it didn’t ease Casey ratepayer’s concerns about permits needed for private land use.

In February 2025, a few days before the first council meeting of the year, fuel was added to the fire following a report by 7News revealing that several vehicles, allegedly without notice, had been impounded from a Casey family’s property.

The council stated that the family was storing unregistered vehicles on their neighbour’s land and that they had sent out multiple formal notices.

And on 18 February 2025, hundreds of locals packed the gallery at Bunjil Place, expressing their anger by heckling throughout the meeting, including through Mayor Stefan Koomen’s Acknowledgement of Country and diversity statement — resulting in a police intervention and adjournment to the meeting.

About 60 submitted public questions were read and most were related to the private land use permit as well as a proposed Hampton Park waste transfer station.

But the tension in the room increased after the questions were read out, where hecklers in the assembly began to call for their questions, that were not officially submitted, to be answered.

Later, Mayor Koomen adjourned the meeting for the night after continuous high emotions from the gallery during the council officers’ reports, Victoria Police came out to escort the councillors and council officers.

The March 2025 council meeting was moved

online, where it was announced that the council would be comprehensively reviewing its controversial Local Law 2023, as well as fees involved for private land use permits.

The review, the council said, would allow for community feedback that would ensure the outcomes benefit locals.

The community consultation process that took place in April and May garnered over 1000 submissions, 74 formal draft submissions, workshops 12 pop-up sessions and over 400 door knocks — and in August, the Casey Community Local Law draft was presented at its monthly council meeting.

The controversial clause regarding the regulations for vehicle repair and unregistered vehicles on private property was ultimately removed in the 2025 draft plan and rather, it suggested that matters relating to excess unregistered vehicles on private land would be managed under the unsightly clause.

But following further community submissions, residents called for clearer definitions and clarity on regulations that ensure different property types are being held to equal standards.

And finally, in December 2025, after nearly a year since the controversy was laid bare, Casey councillors unanimously adopted the Casey Community Local Law 2025.

The new local law outlines that permits for shipping containers on private land were replaced with an amenity-based standard, which aims to ensure containers do not diminish the

character of comfort of the relevant environment.

As suggested in the draft in August, the clause that required permits for vehicle repairs and unregistered vehicles on private property was removed and once the plan is officially adopted in March 2026, it will be dependent on whether they are “unsightly”.

As the new law suggests, ‘unsightly vehicles’ includes two or more unregistered, broken or dismantled vehicles.

According to the December report, in the case of vehicle related activities that impact amenities, such as noise or visual impacts, provisions exist for the council to intervene.

Many of the councillors at the December meeting acknowledged and reflected on the extensive process that had taken place in reviewing and finalising the new local law.

They championed the council’s commitment to listening to the community and establishing laws that in turn, benefit Casey at large.

“We have just demonstrated how significant it is to show our voices are needed and heard, and the officers went to heavy work and provided a beautiful Local Community Law of 2025”, said Kalora Ward councillor, Melinda Ambros.

“The adoption of the Local Law 2025 is not just a regulatory update. It’s a commitment to listening, engaging, and acting in the best interest of the Casey community.”

Since the shaky 2025 February meeting, the council has implemented a registration system for those who want to attend.

Seat of Bruce contested

By Jensy Callimootoo 2025 brought the sweeping federal election that kept Labor in majority of its seats and with it, much controversy for the Bruce electorate division.

From the sacking of Liberal campaign manager for Bruce, Andrew McNabb due to offensive comments online, to a contentious toppling of Bruce Liberal candidate, Zahid Safi.

Early in the campaign, Safi garnered the endorsement of neighboring MP for La Trobe, Jason Wood, who described Safi as a “serious candidate”.

The contentious electorate seat for Bruce resulted in two-term MP, Julian Hill, yet again retaining the seat with a focus on housing affordability, cost of living, improving the health system as well as Medicare and access to quality education.

A few weeks into the election campaign in April, Bruce was largely expected to be a more competitive seat in Melbourne’s southeast, with political analysts considering the seat to have a 5.3 per cent margin and a possible target for the coalition — with each major party investing approximately $90,000 into the electoral division.

The party fell short however, according to the AEC, with a 9.3 per cent swing to Labor, Hill ultimately retained the seat with much larger margins than originally estimated.

Late into the election campaign, questions arose about the opposition’s candidate for Bruce who was reported by The Age to be fabricating reviews of his small businesses.

The same investigation reported that an NDIS business owned by Safi was registered to a property he does not own.

In a social media post from 2023, the address was promoted as a disability support service location with short-term accommodation for those with disabilities.

Safi, who had branded his campaign on his successful local businesses during the federal

election was also revealed to be using stock photos and placeholders rather than real customer content — raising questions from Labor insiders about the validity of his business operations.

The investigation found numerous suspicious and alleged inauthentic online reviews consistent with the usage of photos of individuals from other countries including one from Azerbaijan.

Back in April, at an early voting centre in Dan-

denong, Star News approached Safi who avoided questions regarding the recent media coverage and allegations.

Safi dodged the reporter by entering the toilet, seemingly on a phone call when coming back out, while telling the reporter he was here to speak to the voters.

Not much later however, he left the centre, with many voters questioning where he went.

It was also reported by The Guardian that Safi had co-authored a 2021 parliamentary submission which stated that Hazaras were not persecuted on the grounds of their ethnicity in Afghanistan — incorrectly citing a 2005 Human Rights Watch report and contradicting the official Australian government view on the violence.

In the face of backlash and outrage in the Hazara community, MP Jason Wood, defended Safi, saying that “his input into the report was on the health aspect”.

And that “there was no way that he or anyone” at the Liberal Party held the view that the report insinuated, which effectively minimised the Hazara genocide.

Making history, Safi was the first Afghan to be endorsed by a major political party for federal elections and if he had taken the seat for Bruce, he would’ve been marked as Liberal’s first Muslim MP. The politician fled Afghanistan to Finland and moved to Australia in the 2010s, where he lived in the South-Eastern suburbs of Melbourne but it wasn’t until 2024 that he pursued his political endeavours by joining the Liberal Party.

Signs regarding the renaming of the lake have been placed across the South East.

Lake renaming heats up The renaming of Berwick Springs Lake made headlines in 2025, with the issue being taken to the Upper house and ultimately showcasing a deep divide within the Liberal Party on the matter.

It all began in late November 2024, when a decision to rename the local reserve in Berwick to ‘Guru Nanak Lake’, in honour of Victoria’s Sikh community, was met with strong opposition by residents and politicians.

According to the objectors, the renaming, which was prompted by the State Government, had no consultation process wherein longtime residents in the area could provide feedback on the change.

The new name endeavours to honour the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji and according to Dr Harpreet Singh Kandra, a prominent and senior member of the Sikh community, the intention behind the name is to share core Sikh principles.

In the early days of the matter, objectors garnered the support of Berwick MP Brad Battin as well as South-Eastern Metropolitan MP Ann Marie Hermans, both rallied residents and supported community efforts to reinstate the original name.

Both Liberal MPs were in attendance at one of the first gatherings in late 2024 regarding the matter — but concerns erupted after it was confirmed by The Age, that members of a neo-nazi group attended the community wide meeting.

Among them were their leaders, Thomas Sewell and Joel Davis who are both members of the European Australia Movement (EAM).

Michael Ball, president of the Berwick Springs community group, said at the time that the group had no involvement in the opposition of the renaming of the lake and that they were not invited by him or Mr Battin’s team.

Star News reported at the time that according to an Opposition spokesperson, both Liberal MPs left the events once they were aware that these individuals were in attendance and that Victoria Police was alerted.

But it was one of the last times that Mr Battin publicly supported the objectors on the matter.

The affair spilled over into 2025, with a second gathering in protest of the name taking place in March where 500 residents gathered around the controversial lake along with multiple Casey councillors.

It was also the first time the possibility for a parliamentary debate was put on the table, where all they needed was a petition with 2000 signatures to take it to the Upper House.

Details following a Freedom of information request by Ball, revealed that from July 2022 to July 2023, consultation between different agencies took place, including Geographic Name Victoria, Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) and Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH).

After much ambiguities surrounding ownership of the lake and naming authority — Casey was initially in line to steer the community consultation process, they ultimately pulled out since they were not the naming authority.

Star News reported in March of 2025, that at that point consultation with the Sikh community as well as the traditional owners of the land had already been completed, and with Casey Council out, there was no agency or authority that would carry out the awareness period for the community.

The petition that would take the matter to the Upper House amassed enough signatures however, and after a postponement of the debate in September, the controversy was presented to elected MPs to decide in October.

Bringing the petition to Parliament, MP Ann Marie Hermans remained vocal and steadfast on reinstating the previous name of the lake.

“This government showed complete and utter disrespect for this community when it came out and decided…to change the name of the lake without consulting the community,” said Hermans.

“This is not about hate. It is not about race or religion. It is about a lack of consultation.”

But the MP was ultimately left in the lurch by her fellow Liberal members.

Ms Hermans was only backed by Libertarian MP David Limbrick and One Nation’s Rikki-Lee Tyrell.

The naming of the lake to Guru Nanak Lake, garnered bipartisan support as other MPs stood united and spoke about the deep historical ties the Sikh founder has to the community and what

it means to recognise the contribution of Sikhs to Victorian society.

Later, in a media statement, Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan, championed the outcome of the debate, remarking on the divide between the liberal party.

“Under huge pressure from the community, the flip-flopping Liberals have voted against their own petition that called for Guru Nanak Lake to be cancelled,” said the premier.

Since the debate was lost in October, Ball and many other members of the community have continued to advocate against the name change and have called for greater transparency from the state government.

Star News spoke to Dr Kandra in October who said that he hoped “to build bridges” and wants the Sikh community to stop being used as a “political football”.

Panda Mart’s chaotic start

By Violet Li International discount retailer Panda Mart landed in Cranbourne in early 2025 and made headlines throughout the year with a roller coaster of incidents.

It opened its first store Australia-wide at the ex-Masters site at the Cranbourne Homemaker Centre in late February, offering a variety of products from kitchenware, furniture, and cleaning supplies to home decoration and outdoor sports equipment.

The bargain retailer started its business first in South Africa more than a decade ago and expanded the global empire over the years into South America, the US, and New Zealand.

Owner John Chen told Star News that the business chose Cranbourne as its first destination in Australia because the area had been developing quickly with a growing influx of immigrants and a high demand for shopping.

The grand opening drew far more shoppers than expected.

Reports described hours-long queues, packed carparks, and crowds winding around neighbouring stores.

Fights broke out among frustrated customers who queued for a long time just to get in.

Staff struggled to manage crowd flow, and police were called in.

At times, the store even had to shut early due to overcrowding.

One nearby resident described the scene as “chaotic and out-of-control,” and Panda Mart, overwhelmed by over 10,000 customers per day, later apologised for the safety issues and promised to improve crowd and checkout management.

While shoppers were still discussing the opening chaos, Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) dropped a bombshell public warning, urging anyone who had purchased goods from the store to stop using them immediately and return them for a refund.

Inspectors seized thousands of products that they believe fail to meet mandatory product safety and information standards, including toys and baby rattles containing button batteries that were inadequately secured or labelled.

In response, Panda Mart said it would liaise with suppliers on the proper labelling of products that contain button batteries and also hire a professional to check stocks.

Later in March, a violent daylight robbery sent the store back into public attention.

One widely circulating video showed that a security guard was trying to stop one of the men from robbing, and a passerby intervened, striking the offender with a guitar.

In another video, several men attempted to use metal bars to hit the store’s security guard and store staff.

They then jumped onto a white van and

Security staff later talked about ongoing challenges with retail theft and said the store had been trying various measures to reduce stock loss after months of turbulent activity since opening.

Two days after the incident, police attended a property in Arnott Street in Cranbourne North following the robbery and arrested a woman and two men.

As the year came to a close, in early December, the state’s consumer watchdog CAV cracked down on the business for the second time.

This time, it was granted a court injunction to stop Panda Mart from trading for almost 72 hours.

An inspection of two stores in Cranbourne and Preston the week before identified several items of concern, including banned candles with flammable contents next to the wick, toys with unsecured button batteries, choking hazards, and flotation devices without adequate warnings.

CAV director Nicole Rich said in a statement that most items sold at the Preston store during inspections in September, after the warning about the Cranbourne store, met Australia’s product safety standards.

However, the recent inspections of two stores found shelves re-filled with non-compliant items.

Ms Rich described the situation as “particularly disappointing”.

After the temporary closure, Panda Mart reopened and offered a 20 per cent storewide discount to thank customers for their patience.

The company issued a statement affirming its commitment to safety and cooperation with regulators while promoting its vast product range and continued service to shoppers.

The classes are designed to be fun and easy to follow for those aged 10 upwards. Dancing is great for fitness, co-ordination, balance and memory, and many people form great friendships through the classes.

Stay safe from heat stroke As locals prepare for back-to-back days of soaring temperatures, Ambulance Victoria (AV) paramedics are sharing tips to help stay safe and beat the heat.

High temperatures can negatively affect medical conditions such as chronic illnesses, while also increasing the risk of serious heat-related illnesses, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

AV state health commander Ross Salathiel said although heat stroke is entirely preventable, it is fatal in up to 80 per cent of cases.

“While people most at risk are the elderly, young children and those with medical conditions, heat and heat-related illnesses can affect anybody,” he said.

“Heat stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency that happens when the body overheats and can no longer cool itself down.

“If you or someone else is experiencing symptoms such as confusion, seizures, excessive sweating or no sweating, collapsing or loss of consciousness, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

“To reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses, stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, find a cool place to stay such as shopping centres or at home with fans and air conditioning, use sun protection such as wearing a hat and sunscreen, and avoid being outside during the hottest time of the day.”

AV is also encouraging everyone to stay informed by downloading the VicEmergency App. For non-life-threatening situations that still require a medical response, Mr Salathiel encouraged Victorians to use available alternative care options.

“Our priority will always be responding to the sickest people and we ask Victorians to help us save ambulances for emergencies by knowing their healthcare options,” he said.

“If you need timely medical care and health advice but don’t need an emergency response, consider a free online video call with the Victo-

From Cornwall with love

By Tania Phillips Cornwall is considered one of the most remote and yet beautiful counties in England.

And the county’s North Coast with its dramatic cliffscapes, craggy coves, boundless white-tipped breakers and kilometres and kilometres of golden sands is a jewel in the crown, a hikers paradise – beloved by it’s local residents including local fisherman Jeremy Brown, who is more than happy to extoll it’s beauty, heritage and culture.

Part of a five-generation fishing family Jeremy lives in Port Isaac – a quintessential Cornish Fishing village – known for its narrow, winding streets lined with charming, whitewashed cottages that overlook a picturesque harbour – locally referred to as the Platt.

It has gained fame as the fictional village of Port Wenn in the BBC series Doc Martin with many a visitor searching the historic village for the “Grumpy Doc’s” landmarks according to the seasoned fisherman and part-time singer.

However, Jeremy and his fellow members of Fisherman’s Friends – a group of local men who have been taking sea shanty’s to the world through their two successful movies, musicals and their forthcoming first Australian tour – are slowly changing that. Bringing the tourism focus back on the beautiful landscape and vibrant living culture.

Fishing heritage dates back to the early fourteenth century in Port Isaac. It’s a village that has always been deeply connected to the sea, with fishing continuing to play a significant role in the lives of its residents. The village’s name comes from the Cornish Porthysek, meaning ’corn port’, a nod to its historic role in the grain trade.

“People actually do turn up now and look for someone from the Fisherman’s Friends and not just the grumpy old Doc,” Jeremy laughed.

“It’s been a goal of mine in a way – to have some people come to Port Isaac to see the home of Fisherman’s Friends. People have always come to Port Isaac it’s such a pretty place – but then we got a certain amount of the Tourism which was just people looking for the Doc’s House and what have you.

“Even though we’ve got members in from other Ports now – Padstow and Boscastle – it is the home of the Fisherman’s Friends and people do make a beeline for it but of course the village sells itself - it’s so pretty.”

And on Wednesday nights Jeremy, an original member of the group, formed to raise a bit of money for charity back in the 90s, can often be found in the pub singing sea shanties with the rest of the community. The band on stage on those nights is The Yarnigoats who do a lot of the Fisherman’s Friends repertoire as well as their own music. Local gigs are few and far between for the Friends these days.

Down on the Platt at Port Isaac where Fisherman’s Friends first performed. If it looks familiar its probably because it’s better-known to a lot of the world as Port Wenn thanks to the TV Show Doc Martin.

“Very occasionally about three times this year – on our group WhatsApp chat – we just say is anyone free on Friday and we just do an impromptu gig,” he said.

“But we can’t advertise it these days because it causes chaos down there. If we advertise it we get 2000 people turn up – paramedics, police and marshals have to come because there’s no parking in the village – it’s all out of the village.

“The old sea shanties are obviously from the days of sail so we’re going back hundreds of years.

“But for some reason they’ve got some sort of resonance with people. When we first started singing we had no ambition other than to raise a few pounds for charity. We started singing in the open air at Port Isaac – it’s a bit of an amphitheatre and it sort of lends itself to it.”

The beauty and setting of the village evokes the past and the fishing culture.

“Everything rolls downhill to the harbour,” Jeremy says.

“It’s a very small harbour and it’s straight into the open ocean from there. You’ve got the North Atlantic right out there and the gales literally come right on through and they sweep up the streets and we have to move all the boats.”

He said visitors invariably always find them-

“You can get a beer and just sit on the Platt or you can go up to our local pub where some of the filming in our films took place and enjoy the atmosphere and have a sing.”

Jeremy believes the best thing that has come out of the adventure of Fisherman’s Friends is the revival of pub singing – of singing just for the joy of it at your local and of keeping that

part of Cornish Culture alive. Of course, the band’s trip to Australia is another bonus – and it helps that it’s in the English winter when work is not so busy.

“Singing has not really taken us around the world because we’ve all still got our regular jobs,” he said.

In-form Hawks face Bloods

By Blair Burns Hallam Kalora Park has won three games in a row in the Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) Turf 1 competition and will be looking to make that four this weekend against Springvale South.

In what is shaping up to be a must-watch preliminary final replay, both teams will be desperate to continue their strong form coming out of the Christmas break as they step onto the field at Hallam Recreation Reserve.

Despite the Hawks’ slow start to the season, they appear to have hit their straps in the past two rounds, having won by eight and nine wickets against Dandenong West and Beaconsfield.

But the jury is out as to whether they are ready to take on one of the most formidable teams in the DDCA, Springvale South, who is currently sitting second on the ladder with an impressive 7-1 season record.

The Bloods have won five games in a row and seem to have found a perfect mix with bat and ball, containing a deep batting lineup (seven batters with more than 140 runs) and a bowling unit which continues to deliver, led by Jarryd Straker’s 21 wickets at 10.29.

One thing is for sure; both teams are coming off impressive performances last round – arguably the best of their season.

The Bloods thumped reigning premier Buckley Ridges by 120 runs despite being without opening batter Ryan Quirk, and the Hawks rolled Beaconsfield for 55, before chasing the runs down in just the fifth over.

Hallam Kalora Park captain Jordan Hammond will be hoping his side can pick up exactly where it left off.

Top-order batting duo Damith Perera (248 runs @41.33) and Jawid Khan (241 runs @30.13) hold the keys for the Hawks, each beginning to find good form with the willow.

The T20 competition only helped the pair find the middle of the bat, with Perera scoring 50 and 45, while Khan scored 12 and 60.

Khan is one of the hot favourites for the Wookey Medal, also with 15 wickets across the first half of the season, while another fast bowler has burst onto the scene.

After taking seven wickets in the first four games of Turf 4, Shaveen Ranawaka has come into the Turf 1 team and been clinical with the new ball.

He terrorised Dandenong West the other week to finish with remarkable figures of 6/25 off nine overs, before backing that up with 4/14 against Beaconsfield – he will be one to watch in this contest.

In other games, both Buckley Ridges and Beaconsfield need to respond, but only one team will win when they take the field at Dandenong Park Oval.

Hallam Kalora Park captain Jordan Hammond will hope to lead his team to victory against Springvale South this Saturday. (Stewart Chambers: 457975) The Bucks were beaten last round in a way that we haven’t seen too often, while the Tigers’ performance was worse than that, only managing 55 against Hallam Kalora Park.

Expect Dale Tormey to bounce back from a quiet performance and Ishan Jayarathna to continue his strong form with the bat in hand, while Andrey Fernando must inspire his Beaconsfield group if the Tigers are to claim the six points.

Dandenong West should back up last round’s victory with another one against Parkmore this weekend at Frederick Wachter Turf.

It is a bottom-two clash, the Bulls have managed to win two matches, while the Pirates remain winless after a tough first half of the 2025/26 season.

Berwick started the season 4-0 and was shaping to be a serious premiership contender in Turf 1, however back-to-back losses against Buckley Ridges slowed things a little bit.

But make no mistake, the Bears are still very

much a contender and have beaten every team apart from the Bucks, even handing Springvale South its only loss of the season.

So, they should account for Narre South this weekend, barring a huge performance from Lions skipper Jeevan Mendis, who has given his best every week.

The Bears’ number three, Jake Hancock has belted 298 runs at an average of 99.33 (the highest batting average in the league) and will again play a crucial role in this match.

Huge hitting guaranteed as T20 competition heats up

By Blair Burns Some exciting finals are set for the DDCA T20 competition, with action to resume next Tuesday as eight teams battle it out for a spot in the semi-finals.

Rain interrupted the regular rounds of the competition, but teams caught up their matches and the qualifying eight sides each won both of their games.

Hallam Kalora Park, Narre South, Berwick, Buckley Ridges and Dandenong West are the Turf 1 teams playing in finals, with North Dandenong, Narre Warren and Coomoora from Turf 2.

The Hawks have the best net run rate of any team after advancing to the final eight with a dominant 120-run win against St Mary’s.

They batted first and made a monster score of 202, before bowling the Saints out for just 82.

Jawid Khan (60), Damith Perera (45) and Leigh Booth (48 not out) were damaging with the willow and pushed Hallam Kalora Park to its big total – which included a destructive 110-run opening stand between Khan and Perera.

The side defended the total with ease thanks to a great spell from Mitch Bourke, who took 4/15 with the new ball.

Narre South is looking ominous with Shobit

Singh has helped the Lions to scores of 195 and 182 in their two games and getting him cheaply will go a long way to beating the Lions.

Narre South will face Narre Warren in the first round of finals, while Buckley Ridges and Dandenong West battle it out at Dandenong Park Oval.

Former Hallam Kalora Park star Mahela Udawatte is an exciting import for the Bucks.

You can’t help but cast the mind to a potential grand final match-up between the Hawks and Bucks – a rematch from the DDCA Turf 1 decider last season.

Udawatte would be on the big stage once again, but this time playing for the other team against his former teammates – guaranteed theatre, hopefully the cricket gods are listening and read the script.

Hallam Kalora Park will be the favourite heading into its clash against Coomoora at Hallam Recreation Reserve, with Berwick set to host North Dandenong at Arch Brown Reserve – all finals will be played at 5.15pm on Tuesday 13 January.

Sweetheart strikes again

By David Nagel An annual trip to Geelong has once again paid off handsomely for Pakenham-trained four-year-old gelding Sweethearted after a fast-finishing victory in the $130,000 BM84 Handicap (1100m) on Saturday.

Exactly 12 months after claiming the second victory of his career over the same track and journey, the son of Brave Smash/Candy Floss produced a grinding finish to hunt down race-leader Philosopher in the shadows of the post.

And while the win may have broken a yearlong drought from the winners’ stall, it continued a very consistent run of form; with Sweethearted having never been defeated by more than four lengths in his now 11-start career.

Trainer Phillip Stokes was confident of a strong performance; and that enthusiasm gained momentum after his quality-sprinter began well from the inside gate.

In-form jockey Harry Coffey gave Sweethearted a peach of a run, settling midfield on the fence before peeling out four-wide on the turn.

Sweethearted produced his trademark finishing burst; reeling in the leaders at the 200 and surging clear for a half-length victory on the line.

“He jumped well today, held his position, Harry (Coffey) gave him a beautiful ride and got him out at the right time,” Stokes explained.

“He’s been building up to this, he’s been racing really well, he’s a backmarker that needs luck.

“I’m really happy for the connections, they’ve been very patient with him and the team at home have done a very good job with him as well.

“He’s a really nice little horse and connections are going to have a lot of fun.”

Coffey said the race could not have gone more according to script.

“It did, it panned out beautifully; when you draw one, obviously there’s some trickiness if

your horse gets back, but he was able to actually get into a nice spot,” Coffey said.

“They really flowed on; that allowed the field to break up and I was able to make my path to the middle of the track quite easily.

“When he quickened, he quickened like he was going to win quite well, but old Philosopher, he was tough, he put on a real show and he took a lot of getting past.

“Good effort, but credit to the second horse… he was tough.”

Coffey explained that getting Sweethearted to jump well was one of the key components of the race.

“Phil (Stokes) doesn’t say much, it was pretty simple, he just said to try and have him as close as you can, he does have a tendency to not want to jump, but he jumped reasonable for Lachie (Neindorf) at Pakenham, he said to just keep in mind that you don’t want to be falling out the back and giving him too much to do,” Coffey said.

“Because it was a small field, I was still able to get into a nice spot, and Phil said if you expose him early, he might peak on his run quickly, and if that was to happen, he can find again with the whip in the left.

“We nailed all those aspects and got the job done.”

Sweethearted has now won three of his 11 starts and accumulated over $240,000 in prizemoney.

Coffey shared riding honours on the day, riding a race-to-race double after scoring aboard the Simon Wilde-trained Precious Charm in race eight on the card.

Tom Stockdale also snared a double, scoring aboard the Wilde-trained Darkbonee in race one and the Lucy Yeomans-prepared Jenni The Fox in the penultimate race on the program.

Racing returns to Flemington this Saturday, with the time-honoured Standish Handicap (1200m) the feature race of the day.

Resurgent Pakenham looks to make it four wins in a row

By Justin Schwarze Clyde’s New Year’s resolution will be to bounce back in a big way at home against Devon Meadows in round nine of the Casey Cardinia Cricket Association (CCCA) Premier Division.

The Cougars dropped an important game against finals contender Pakenham before the break, with the Lions another team Clyde will be battling against for ladder positioning.

Skipper Trevor Bauer will command the early overs for his side while the Cougars are hopeful Kane Avard can continue to keep his good form and momentum rolling at the top of the order after his season-best knock of 83 against Pakenham.

The Panthers come in after a struggling run to conclude 2025, dropping their last three to slide to second bottom.

All three defeats were comprehensive as Devon Meadows couldn’t produce much with the bat or ball.

Both Clyde and the Panthers are tied-bottom for the fewest wickets taken in the league at 53 apiece.

Devon Meadows has allowed 1659 runs so far this season, the highest mark in the league, but the Cougars aren’t far behind at 1655.

Whichever team can strike early and put pressure on the other with the ball will control the contest.

The Demons at full strength are as good as anyone and both teams boast deep and talented bowling units so consistent batting will be the key to unlocking victory.
