Move on crossing By Kyra Gillespie Cardinia Lakes residents have had their hopes for a safe pedestrian crossing on Windermere Boulevard renewed - but not in time for the opening of the estate's newest school. A recent correspondence sent by Cardinia Shire Council informed members of Cardinia Lakes Residents Group, who have been behind the push to get a safe crossing at the busy thoroughfare, that engineering plans for a zebra crossing with wombat-style flashing lights have been drawn up. The communication said a formal request had been made to VicRoads for a warrant to construct; however no timeline has been given for the project. Pakenham Primary School, which feeds off Windermere Boulevard on Atlantic Drive, is set to open its doors this week - anticipating the footfall of hundreds of children and their families. Not only is the Windermere crossing not in place, but there are no school crossing supervisors either. Council say the provision of school crossing supervisors is "based on criteria relating to the number of children crossing and vehicle volumes on Windermere Boulevard", which they say are "unknown at this stage." "Surveys will have to be taken as soon as school commences to see if the necessary war-

rants are met for the provision of a school crossing supervisor," a spokesperson said. Cardinia Residents Group President Natasha Henderson said she hoped the crossing would be built as soon as possible. "Council has advised us the request to be able to construct has gone to VicRoads and they are talking to the other authorities impacted," she said. "We are grateful to the council for taking our community's concerns seriously. "This is a dangerous road to cross and all residents need to be able to move around our shopping and community precinct safely." The community has been advocating for the crossing for a year; it started with a petition of over 600 signatures to council via Councillor Michael Shilling in January 2018, then council budget submissions in March 2018, and further lobbying prior to the November state election. "Without this local action we would not be seeing this become a reality," Ms Henderson continued. "It really shows what working together can do." Council is currently obtaining a point of electricity supply from AusNet to enable the powering of lights. The local government body is also consulting with Public Transport Victoria to arrange the relocation of the existing bus stop.
