"(We're) maintaining something that doesn't cater to the needs of modern teaching and learning." Kooweerup Primary School principal Nathan Jagoe added: "I'm grateful to the school council for their energy and drive in having our voice heard."

The State Opposition has opened up the chequebook, pledging to renovate two of Cardinia Shire's "neglected" schools in a $9.5 million investment, if elected. Pakenham Secondary College would receive a $7 million major facelift while Kooweerup Primary would receive a state-of-the-art, $2.5 million gymnasium. It comes just a week after the Gazette reported that the Kooweerup School's dilapidated gymnasium was serving as a "zoo" for snakes, lizards, rats and mice. Shadow Education Minister Tim Smith toured Pakenham High and Kooweerup Primary on Wednesday - shocked by how much both had been "ignored" by the State Government. "Daniel Andrews talks about the education state, but that slogan clearly doesn't apply to these schools," he said. "As you can see, the kids are doing gym in a tin shed and I can only imagine in the middle of summer or the height of winter, it would be stinking hot or freezing cold. "It looks like something you keep farm machinery in - and that is totally unacceptable. "At Pakenham High, the $7 million will be well spent. "Brian Paynter has been talking about this for four years in parliament, and as a former school council president and student, there's nobody better placed to advocate on behalf of the school." Under the proposed Pakenham High upgrades, the school's asbestos-riddled administration building and Year 7 centre would be completely demolished and replaced with modern developments.

The master plan will also include an amphitheatre, new internal roadways and parking. Bass MP Brian Paynter said both schools are in dire need of financial support. "They are absolutely desperate for this," he said. "At Pakenham Secondary College, the buildings are old and lack functions that we need in modern day schools, and aesthetically, the school could use a lift. "It has a prominent road frontage and the buildings don't do it justice. "In that room at Kooweerup, you could barely fit 20 kids in there. "We should be building multipurpose facilities that the community can use as well." On Wednesday, Premier Daniel Andrews travelled to Pakenham to spruik an $850 million cash splash for new schools across Victoria. The party masqueraded the opening of Pakenham Primary School and Pakenham Henry Road Secondary as new announcements, despite the government revealing them earlier this year. Meanwhile, Mr Paynter said it was important to look after existing schools. "It's okay to build new facilities but it shouldn't be at the expense of our existing schools," he said. The Pakenham Secondary College upgrade has reportedly been on the school council's radar for more than eight years. College vice principal Emmanuel Merambeliotis is hopeful that the commitment will come to fruition. "The main need to upgrade what is essentially a 40 year old building is so we can deliver quality teaching and student outcomes," he said. 12386172-EPJ18-18

Reward our volunteers Cardinia’s reigning Citizen of the Year Malcolm Graham loves to volunteer his time. He picked up the shire’s top honour on Australia Day due to the great work he does around the Upper Beaconsfield area, mostly these days with the annual Village Festival each February. Like many community stalwarts, he doesn’t look for recognition and is often embarrassed by it. Malcolm still has no idea who nominated him as Citizen of the Year, probably because he is involved in so many groups. The volunteering began when the kids were at kindergarten, then went through school. “I enjoyed being involved in whatever way I could contribute,” he said. “The rewards were easy - seeing smiling happy children and happy families, which are the building blocks of a great community.” Malcolm has also chaired the Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong Road Safety Committee for many years, been district co-ordinator for Neighbourhood Watch and a member of the Upper Beaconsfield Fire Brigade. “You don’t look for these things,” he said of the award. “But they are nice when they come along.” Nominations are now open for the 2019 Australia Day Awards in the categories of Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year. Malcolm encourages people to give the awards some thought, so that those who do things in the community are rewarded for their efforts. His work in the Upper Beaconsfield community intensified around the time of the horrific Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983. The days after that disaster have had a lasting effect on many in that close-knit community.

Malcolm and good friend Barry Smith, with the help of Rotary and some wonderful businesses at the time arranged for bikes to be donated to the local children, along with other sporting equipment, The idea was to get the kids active and smiling again. They also sought donations of chainsaws to help clear the burnt out blocks of land. “It’s times like that when volunteering is rewarding,” Malcolm explained. “To see kids smiling and their mums and dads smiling as

well was just fantastic.” Malcolm says volunteering can be so rewarding for such little effort - meeting great people along the way and enjoying their company while tackling the challenges that arise. “It all starts when you step forward to help, to learn and to bond together with knowledge to achieve,” he said. “It could begin with a tap on the shoulder to ask for help, offering your time when you can see that more hands would make light work, or identifying a need to take the initiative if you see something that needs improving, while al-

ways being aware of the need for safety.” He said volunteering took many forms whether it be administrative, physical help or leadership. “When we have a commitment to our community we can live in a more articulate, healthy, wealthy, happier and safer place,” he said. “It only take a bit of courage to take one step forward to be rewarded as I have as a volunteer.” Nominations for the Cardinia Shire awards close on Sunday 25 November. Details can be found on the shire’s website.

Cesspit in the CBD By Rowan Forster A festering cesspit littered with filth, drug paraphernalia and empty beer bottles has become the eyesore of Pakenham's CBD. The Cracker Jackson Memorial Pavilion on Henry Street has been desecrated by vile cretins to an extent whereby ratepayers fear it will drive down property values. While the area is also inhabited by law abiding homeless people, it is believed drug users are widely responsible for the area's disgusting appearance. The site was up-kept when it was used by the Lions Club - but has rapidly deteriorated since the community group relocated to Cardinia Road. A local performing arts group subsequently used the hall to practice, but it was marred with chaos. "The football rooms were, until recently, used by the performing arts company but unfortunately it kept getting broken into and we often had to clean up rubbish and homemade bongs before rehearsals," the group's Joanne Arrowsmith said. "They removed the fence to try to stop it being used as a hangout but it didn't make a difference. "There was often equipment being stolen and trashed, but this was before the homeless people used the spot." When the Gazette approached the Cracker Jackson Memorial Pavilion, a man claimed that loiterers have inundated the area since CCTV was installed at Ahern Park. "They're all from that area, and they get here and get on the piss," he said. "It's nothing to do with homeless people." The building, which remains under Cardinia Shire's ownership, seems to no longer receive attention from the council. Jim Richardson, who lives a stone-throw

Rubbish, drug paraphernalia and clothing litters the steps of the abandoned Cracker Jackson Memorial Pavilion.

from the notorious park, said it has impacted the potential sale of his property. Mr Richardson has been fielding private enquiries for his three bedroom home, and so far, the Cracker Jackson Memorial Pavilion has been cited as a major concern for a number of prospective buyers. "Nobody wants to live near something like that," he said. "It's disgusting, and it makes you apprehensive about the type of people who are creating that mess. "I'm just shocked the council hasn't done anything - considering they'd be all over you if your nature strip gets too long."

The area has been labelled "disgusting" and "mortifying" by nearby residents.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with Natalie Young, horse trainer at Cranbourne Racecourse

What inspired you to become a horse trainer and what does your daily routine look like? My Mum used to train a few race horses when I was younger and so I learned to ride. From there, I started riding track work for local trainers. The daily routine for any horse trainer starts before the sun rises. Trent and I are at the stables at 4am six days a week to work our stable of 69 horses. We have a staff of 25 to ensure things run smoothly in the morning. It is very important when you are also preparing for races the same day.

THREE … quick facts about Remembrance Day

What was your most memorable moment in the racing industry? Winning the Victoria Derby with Sangster

1

Remembrance Day was first observed in 1919 throughout the British Commonwealth. It was originally called "Armistice Day" to commemorate the armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11am - on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

2

The red poppy is the a symbol of remembrance. This tradition has its origins during the First World War and inspired by the fields of poppies that grew in the battleravaged fields of the Western Front.

3

This year the Prospect Hill Drive Bridge in Narre Warren will be named for the Gippsland Regiment the locally raised and based Militia Unit which served in the Papua New Guinea campaign during World War II.

What is something people don't know about you? I can eat my weight in food. What is your favourite movie? Finding Nemo. If you were PM for a day, what would you do? Hampton Park's Korey Abrahams has recently set up a project called 'Taken for Granted', a foundation to offer support to those suffering through tough times, such as homelessness. Mr Abrahams works in Dandenong and often sees people begging for money and always feels the need to help out. "On this particular day the response I got from this man who I simply gave around $10 and some coins to was amazing. He was so grateful for such a small donation," he said. "It looked like I had just saved his life and that inspired me to start this movement. "As someone who has been through my own hard time with finances I may not have been homeless but have felt the disadvantages of having no money, I feel it is important to help those in need if you have the power to do so." Mr Abrahams and his team have received almost $600 in donations since starting but are still long way from their target of $5000. "Our goal is to use all the proceeds to make care packages that can go to the people in need, filled with things they can really use such as clothing, bottled water, basic toiletries as well as can foods that they can store and pop up tents," Mr Abrahams said. "We know many people have a sceptical opinion on giving money or goods to homeless people thinking they will use or sell the items to feed an addiction. Mr Abrahams said, "But as the old saying says don't judge a book by its cover. We don't know the stories behind the person

Go Vita Berwick 10 Blackburne Square BERWICK PH 9707 1148

Does anybody living in Berwick know the whereabouts of my long-time friend Tony Rafferty? For years we had coffee together at Fountain Gate shops. At Christmas time we would exchange Christmas cards, but since last Christmas I have never seen him. He just disappeared. In March just gone he rang to see you soon and that was it. Nothing since. Last time I saw Tony was at Fountain Gate just before last Christmas and he told me he was thinking of giving up the car due to his eyes. Maybe that’s why I never see him. I have also looked in Bunjil Place Library because Tony was a keen library person. Tony would now be around 78. I am 82 but I don’t know his address in Berwick. So wherever you are Tony, I hope you are well and maybe contact us. Best wishes from your friend and coffee mate, Derek Gardner, Hampton Park.

Well-deserved award I am delighted and incredibly proud to acknowledge the Principal and leadership team at Narre Warren Secondary who won two awards at the 2018 Victorian Education Excellence Awards. They won the Outstanding School Advancement Award as well as the overall Lindsay Thompson Award for Education Excellence. These awards are a well-deserved recognition of the transformation this school has undergone in the last three years. The school has worked collaboratively to raise expectations of their teachers and students. Using data and a focus on wellbeing the school

focuses on giving life skills and pathway to every student allowing them to succeed beyond school. Their capital works program has added to the sense of pride at the school. At the awards the leadership team reiterated their belief that the disadvantage that exists in their community doesn't have to determine the destiny of their students. Partnering with parents as well as sporting clubs, language schools and other community organisations this school has become a truly vital and important heart of the Narre Warren Community. They are literally changing lives for the better through education and are now formally recognised as an inspiration to schools across the State. As Parliamentary Secretary for Education, I have travelled across the State and seen great examples of school leadership combined with the investments made through the Education

State Reforms deliver successful student outcomes. To see such an exemplary example take place in my own electorate is an extra special privilege. As I finish my term as Parliamentary Secretary and retire as local member, I am incredibly proud of the difference the Principal team at Narre Warren South Secondary are making. Students at this school have more opportunities and will lead much better and more economically and socially prosperous lives as a result of the work of these incredible leaders. I pay tribute to their leadership and warmly congratulate all at the school who contributed to these significant and worthy honours. Yours Sincerely, Judith Couacaud Graley MP. Skills for the future By Jessica Anstice The Ready Set Work Cafe Operations program provides practical skills training to people generally disengaged with education - with the aim of developing employability skills and improving literacy and language skills required for employment. The program is run by Jesuit Community College (part of Jesuit Social Services) and is open to young people not enrolled in mainstream education such as secondary school, VCAL or TAFE. Students are aged between 16 and 25. Students showed their skills off on a com-

mercial expresso machine with visits to local cafes and coffee roasteries. Member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan visited the students at Narre Warren Bowls Club on Wednesday, 31 October. Participant Zayne made Mr Donnellan a coffee with the skills he has picked up as part of the program. Mr Donnellan spoke to the class about his experiences looking for work as a young person, and the importance of working and contributing to society. The participants all really enjoyed his visit and meeting him. Participant Emily said, "At first I didn't

know what I wanted to do for a job, but this course has made me want to find a job in a cafe or hospitality. "It's also helped me to learn more about resumes and interviews. Once I graduate I'm looking to find part time or casual work in a cafe - that would be great." Upon successful completion of the course young people gain accreditations in several areas, practical skills and knowledge for working in the hospitality industry, improved job readiness and a career pathway to employment or further education and training. The participants graduate from the course next week.

All in for monster fun as Berwick gets the spooks By Jessica Anstice The Old Cheese Factory Berwick was turned into a spooky playground for Halloween on Wednesday 31 October. More than 7000 people from around the region joined in on the celebrations. Council received an overwhelming response to the event with a majority of patrons dressed up in their scariest costumes! A major highlight of the event was the trick or treat trail, which gave guests the chance to walk through a spooky site while collecting goodies along the way! The community also enjoyed the surprise flash mob. Other entertainment on the night included amusement rides, a disco, Halloween games, scary workshops, music entertainment and paranormal activity!

Students are all biology Federation University's Berwick Campus hosted a Biology Science Fair for students on Friday, 26 October. Throughout the semester students have been researching the anatomy and physiology of vertebrates (humans and animals). The presentations included models of different biological systems (eyes, brains, hearts) and demonstrations showing how particular systems work, along with poster displays highlighting scientific information. Students presented their findings during the fair for their final assessment task for Systems Biology. Some examples of projects students are working on include: Comparative differences in the anatomy of the heart between mammals, fish, birds and reptiles Comparative differences in the digestive anatomy of ruminant (sheep/cows) and non-ruminant (humans) animals How smoking affects the function of the lung Brain lateralisation How our eyes process images How the immune system protects us from invading pathogens

FOCUS ON … YOUR HEALTH YOUR IMAGE

Dedicated to dental health Ms Bennett explained that some simple signs to look for when identifying gum disease include red or puffy gums and bleeding when flossing or brushing close to the gums. “When in orthodontic treatment it is especially important that you take good care of your oral health,” she said. “The presence of braces or other orthodontic appliances increase the available area for plaque and oral bacteria to stick to, increasing the likelihood of gum disease and tooth decay.” Straight Smiles Pakenham is located at Suite 1, 63 Main Street in Pakenham. The team at Straight Smiles Orthodontics value patient’s oral health and are excited to share a few helpful tips to encourage them on their journey to a healthy smile. “Did you know that over half of the Australian population have some form of gum disease - and that is only the recorded cases!” Straight Smiles Practice Manager Casey Bennett said. “Gum disease can lead to a range of issues such as periodontitis and tooth decay. Luckily it is very easy to identify and treat. An appointment at your general dentist can confirm if you have gum disease and simple ways to treat it include twice daily brushing and daily flossing.”

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

In the business of life By Rowan Forster A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

health care system for the entire community. According to government figures, 45 per cent of metropolitan emergency department presentations are non-urgent. Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills. After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. Parents or caregivers interested in undertaking the free training can sign up by heading to: www.tinyheartsfirstaid.com/fundedcourse.

Jobs growth challanges present for a booming region tor Rob Darby, GBS Recruitment has steadily grown across Gippsland and recently opened an office in Pakenham. Mr Dawson said opening an office to service the Casey Cardinia Region as well as the wider South East metropolitan area was a natural progression for GBS, which has a diverse spread of clients across private businesses, industrial, corporate and government sectors looking for the best permanent, temporary, labour hire, and senior executive staff. He said the GBS directors believe the region has a strong employment profile with job numbers expected to grow in coming years. Retail is the region’s largest employer generating 16,871 jobs in 2016/17, followed by 12404200-ACM46-18

As at June 30 2017 there were 106,403 jobs located in the Casey Cardinia Region, a 6 per cent increase on the year before. With a surging population, the region is continuing to attract new business, from manufacturing and retail to health and education providers right through to sole operators working from home. Finding the right employees is one of the biggest challenges facing all organisations, as Sales and Strategy Director at GBS Recruitment Michael Dawson well knows. Casey Cardinia Region 24 STAR NEWS

|

Michael Dawson

M:0419 299 598

Sales and Strategy Director Michael Dawson (right) and Conal Tatt in the new GBS Pakenham office. 186934 health care and social assistance, education and trade. The goods related sector accounts for 43 per cent of employment in the Casey Cardinia Region. Household services account for 39.8 per cent, business services 10.8 per cent, agriculture forestry and fishing 3 per cent and public administration and safety 3 per cent. The region has more female workers at 52.7 per cent, compared to 47.3 per cent of males. Of those 54.2 per cent work full time and 43.7 per cent work part time, while 31 per cent were born overseas. The majority are aged between 25 and 54. Mr Dawson said he expected demand for skilled labour to grow across IT, manufacturing, engineering and construction, health and education. “I think we will find high needs across all markets. I expect industrial to be quite strong, because of our location here in the South East which has a strong manufacturing base. I am expecting commercial roles in the health services and government sectors to be strong as well. “I have no doubt automation and online technology will move quickly in terms of ex-

pansion over the next few years. The job shift will continue quite rapidly whereby a lot of manual tasks will continue to disappear, but new jobs will come in the ICT and IT areas, particularly in leading and servicing the automations and technical requirements of these systems.“ He pinpointed health care and education as other growth areas, while agriculture and its supply chain will definitely continue to be an important part of the region’s employment mix. GBS also provides casual teachers to the education sector and Mr Dawson said demand was growing strongly for this service across both primary and secondary schools for qualified CRT teachers. He said building activity and infrastructure projects would keep demand high for engineers and trades people. Mr Dawson said research has shown approximately 70 per cent of new business appointments that fail, do so because companies fall into the trap of hiring people who have a poor cultural fit with the organisation. “Expert advice is crucial to make sure the fit is right for both the employer and employee. Sound recruitment and the critical processes required can make the difference between business success and failure, this is something GBS Recruitment is exceptionally good at,“ he said. “We want businesses across the region to succeed by getting the right people for the right jobs.“ The GBS website has options for registering for work or for loading vacancies should your business need help with employing staff across their three divisions - Commercial (White Collar), Industrial (Blue Collar) and Education www.gbsrecruitment.com.au - Statistics for this story were obtained from idcommunity demographic resources.

Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds. They perform around the City of Casey at a variety of venues to entertain the public but we also teach learners to play the great highland bagpipe. Despite the group currently having a mid-year break, lessons for their learners continue. Email berwickpipers16@gmail.com or visit the website at www.berwickpipers.info. The group's secretary Steve Everett and tutor can be contacted on 97296219 or 0425 826 990.

STAR NEWS 29

SPORT

He’s coming home By Russell Bennett You could take Lachy Hansen out of the Nar Nar Goon footy club, but you could never really take the Nar Nar Goon footy club out of Lachy Hansen. It always seemed to be a matter of when, not if, the former number three draft pick would return to the Goon for the end of his career - back where it all began. And that time is now. The Goon has announced that its 197-centimetre favourite son will be back in the famous colours for the 2019 West Gippsland Football Netball Competition season - and they can hardly wait. The senior side finished the 2018 home and away season in a four-way tie for the ladder lead, and Hansen's inclusion will massively boost its chances for September glory moving forward. Of course, Dean Blake's side will have to find a way past the likes of reigning premier Phillip Island - which, off the back of a devastating grand final performance in keeping Kooweerup goalless, has signed former Melbourne utility Cam Pedersen in a stunning move. But the Goon faithful is just over-the-moon to have the 30-year-old Hansen back in the fold. He's returning to the local area with his wife Prue (nee Prue Evans) and kids after a playing stint at Pascoe Vale. Nar Nar Goon president Dene Missen is understandably thrilled to have Hansen - who played 151 games for North Melbourne as both a forward, and an intercept marking defender back at the club. "He was always coming back - it was just when," Missen revealed. "They (Lachy and Prue) have just had another child and they wanted to get home and be closer to their family. "He always said he wanted to finish his career at the Goon, and we're rapt he is." Missen said Hansen had knocked back some big offers from other clubs in Gippsland

"This is going to create some incredible excitement around our club.

"We've got our loyal people who're always at the club, and hopefully this will create a lot of new and rekindled interest too. "It's just an awesome story that he's coming back." Member of the local consortium, Peter Vlachos spoke of his excitement at the prospect of having an A-League and W-League team practically right on his back door. "I grew up in the south-east and played football from a young age," he said. "I spent most of my playing days at Bentleigh Greens, but I also played at Chelsea, Clayton Inter and Sandringham. To be involved with something like Team 11 excites me greatly. "Having travelled around Europe and seen the youth and development programs available in those countries, I've realised that we need to create greater opportunities and better pathways here in Australia. This club, if given a licence, is our chance to grow grassroots football and create a better future for the talented kids in south-east Victoria. "The fact that I am a father of two young boys makes me even more passionate about this project."

Beaconsfield dishes up an epic belting By Hayley Wildes For as long as cricket has been played, monster wins - and losses - have been part and parcel of the game. But on Saturday afternoon at Coomoora Reserve, Beaconsfield dealt an alltime thumping to Coomoora. In the Dandenong District Cricket Association Turf 3 match-up, Coomoora batted first but only lasted a measly 15 overs as the Tigers were ruthless with the ball. The dynamic pairing of Matt Golding (5/6) and Alex Roberts (4/5) produced figures that require a double-take. They were irresistible as their consistent and deadly line and length was too much for Coomoora's batsmen. Not only did the pair take plenty of wickets, their efficiency was off the charts too as they simply didn't bowl a bad delivery. With Roberts and Golding ripping through the batting line-up, the Roos were dismissed for just 20 runs as nine batsmen failed to make more than two runs. "Their captain, Lance Baptist - we played against him last year and he's a good player he came in at five and we thought if we can get him out early, then who knows what can happen," Matt Golding said of the stunning result. "I think we got him out second ball and from then, they just kept missing the straight balls. We hit the stumps a lot and and it was just one of those things that within the blink of eye we'd bowled them out." In response, the Tigers posted a total of 1/24 in five overs to claim the resounding win. In what would have to be one of the quickest games in recent memory, after kicking off at 1pm, it was all done and dusted by around 2:30 - and that includes a break between the innings. The win sees Beaconsfield remain on top of the ladder after three rounds, boasting three wins - all of which have come in convincing fashion. "We've got a really, really good bunch - I think we've got maybe four players from last year, but all the new guys who have come in have really gelled together and there's a really good vibe around the club," Golding said. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Pakenham's Kerry Lewis sends one down the green. Gary Crowley skipped a winning Pakenham side against Vermont South.

Back in the winners’ circle of the wind on a slick synthetic green but still got away to a promising start. By afternoon tea, they had two rinks up and a slender overall lead of four shots. From there on, the game gradually slipped away and despite winning on two rinks, they were eventually beaten 8572. The best rink, with a score of 20-15, was Dave Wood (S), Peter Ellis (3), Ryan Tebble (2) and Brian Norton (L). As a result of the loss, they dropped to seventh on the ladder and face Mulgrave Country Club (tenth) at home next round. Despite being away from home, Pakenham Three (Division 3) got an early jump on their opponents at Cranbourne, and held a 20-shot lead at the halfway point. By the completion of play, they went down narrowly on two rinks but still came home with a 24-shot victory, 9167. The best rink, with a healthy 24-8 scorecard, was Charles Harris (S), Paul Walter (3),

Sylvana Courtin (2) and Ray Pigdon (L). The Threes didn’t advance up the ladder, but it was the start of a move in the right direction. They are away again next round at Keysborough. Big wins on two rinks and close scores on the other two saw Pakenham Four (Division 6) inflict a resounding defeat on the old enemy; Berwick. The Lions absolutely bolted from the barriers and didn’t give their opponents a sniff at any stage. The final score was 103-55, with three rinks up and the other down by only one shot. Best rink, with a score of 34-10, was John Moore (S), Sam Granieri (3), David Moore (2) and Vince Bevilacqua (L), although at 32-10, Bill Bosch’s crew weren’t far behind. They sit in the middle of the ladder at fifth and play away at Bentleigh (seventh) next round. Unfortunately, Pakenham Five (Division 7) had a Saturday they would rather forget. Playing Dandy RSL REC at Keysborough, with one man short and another injured, they were never able to get into the game and eventually lost by 50 shots, 106-56. The best rink was Alan Waterson (S), Luis Aguilar (3), Gail Bowman (2) and Judith Ferrari (L) at 20-19. They are at home to Monbulk next round. MIDWEEK Pakenham One (Division 1) had a much better day last Tuesday. They started confidently at home against Vermont South and quickly got away to a good early lead on two rinks while the other was neck and neck. By lunchtime, the Lions led on all rinks and had an overall lead of 15 shots. The visitors fought back in the second half of the game but the end result was Pakenham up by 67-54 with two winning rinks. Best of the winners, with 22-13, were Gary Crowley (S), Ned Courtin (3), Jim Williams (2) and Norm Box (L). The win didn’t improve their position on the ladder but it did provide

a bit of a buffer. Pakenham One will be away at Clayton next round (November 13). Pakenham Two (Division 2) were at home to Hampton Park. They stuttered at the start of a low-scoring game and although it was tight all day, it seemed that they were always chasing a few vital shots. The margin was minus three at half time and at 58-55, was still minus three at the completion of play. The Lions’ only winning rink, with a score of 20-17, was Terry O’Toole (S), Josie Mazzarella (3), Peter Powney (2) and Jan Moore (L). They dropped to fifth on the ladder and will be away at Keysborough (second) next round. Bowls Victoria has changed their method of allocating pennant points this season and as a result, although Pakenham Three (Division 5) had a bye in round six; they were awarded the full 16 Pennant points and retained third spot on the ladder. They will be home to the Dandenong Club (ninth) next round. The Pakenham Four six-a-side team was just across town at Cardinia Waters. They jumped away to a good start but by the halfway mark, their hosts had pegged them back and were ahead by seven shots. However, both Pakenham rinks outscored their opponents in the second half of the game with John Moore’s crew winning the last seven ends on the trot and picking up 18 shots in the process - this resulted in a Lions’ win, 42-34. Best Pakenham rink was John Moore (S), Peter Wilson (3) and Jan Stevenson (L) with a 27-11 scorecard. The Fours will be at home to Churchill Waverley Golf next round. HI-LO Winner of the hi-lo for round five was Ray Leggett with number 34.

PAKENHAM BOWLS Pakenham One (Division 1) was back in the winners’ circle on Saturday. Playing at home in windy conditions against the strong Heathmont club, they jumped away to an early lead and by halfway through the game had three rinks up and an overall lead of 24 shots. From that point on, it was an arm wrestle, however the Lions brought it home, winning 91-66 and collecting 15 Pennant points. The best rink with a final score of 31-10 was Trent Gribbin (S), Alan Hilton (3), Keith Archer (2) and Terry Sullivan (L). Trent’s crew seemed to be playing on another planet - at one stage they led their opponents 27-2! The win saw them jump up to sixth spot on the ladder and they play Ferntree Gully (away) next round. Down by the beach at Carrum, Pakenham Two (Division 2) was exposed to the full force
