By Tanya Steele Dive into a packed year that was this edition, as we welcome some blurry eyed journalists back to the desk and fill our pages with a mere fraction of what the people of the Hills have gotten up to in the last year.

Arts, sports, volunteering and more, life in the Ranges saw ups and downs. There were festivals new and old, celebrations, gigs, awards and a huge outpouring of grief as community honoured lives lost too soon.

CFA in Emerald, Cockatoo and Yarra Junction will now respond to some Triple Zero phone calls, to alleviate the pressure of some of the ambulance waiting times for people in high emergency situations. If you are a local calling Triple Zero, it might just be a CFA truck who arrives on your doorstep.

The paper also ran a campaign on the CCTV

network that didn’t quite work out the way it was planned across the Yarra Ranges as residents dealt with increased crime, with family violence remaining a critical issue alongside properties and businesses being hit with thefts and damages. It was also a veritable historical milestone palooza, with groups and townships hitting a number of important milestones. Once home to the hunting grounds for the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people, townships are making their way. Kallista celebrated 100 years and local radio 3MDR has been on the airwaves for 40. Quite a few residents celebrated turning 100 themselves.

Occurring across 39 kilometres of interconnected walking trails, the dynamic art and nature installation named the ‘ngurrak barring | RidgeWalk’ is almost complete, with a number of new additions installed to the trail by local artists in 2025.

Family violence assault levels at a 10-year high The Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) released the Victorian recorded crime statistics for the year ending 30 September 2025 last month.

Here’s a breakdown of the latest statistics for the Outer East region: In the Yarra Ranges, criminal incidents were up 8.5 per cent on the previous year (5841 from 5383), with 32.9 per cent having charges laid, 21.9 per cent yet to have charges laid and 45.2 per cent unsolved.

Lilydale (1159 incidents, up from 1088), Mooroolbark (818 up from 687), Chirnside Park (667 up from 591), Kilsyth (437 down from 438) and Healesville (336 up from 315) were the crime hotspots.

Theft from a motor vehicle (602 incidents), breaching a family violence order (582), theft from a retail store (507), criminal damage (493) and other theft (475) were the most common offences.

In Knox, criminal incidents were up 6.8 per cent on the previous year (8311 from 7779), with 30.2 per cent having charges laid, 16.1 per cent yet to have charges laid and 53.7 per cent unsolved.

Wantirna South (1519 incidents, up from 1353), Boronia (81439 up from 1252), Ferntree Gully (1327 up from 1281), Rowville (1173 down from 1202) and Bayswater (904 up from 852) were the crime hotspots.

Theft from a motor vehicle (1434 incidents), theft from a retail store (895), other theft (786), criminal damage (563) and breaching a family violence order (520) were the most common offences.

In Maroondah, criminal incidents were up 9.2 per cent on the previous year (6752 from 6182), with 33 per cent having charges laid, 16.2 per cent yet to have charges laid and 50.8 per cent unsolved.

Ringwood (2940 incidents, up from 2799), Croydon (1480 up from 1309), Bayswater North (692 up from 594), Ringwood East (534 up from 508) and Heathmont (322 up from 259) were the crime hotspots.

Theft from a motor vehicle (1027 incidents), theft from a retail store (618), other theft (577), breaching bail conditions (512) and criminal damage (416) were the most common offences.

In Cardinia, criminal incidents were up 20.1 per cent on the previous year (7067 from 5886), with 30.2 per cent having charges laid, 16.5 per cent yet to have charges laid and 53.3 per cent unsolved.

Statewide, the rate of recorded offences increased, up 9.0 per cent to 9030.2 per 100,000 Victorians in the last 12 months, while the number of offences increased 10.8 per cent to 640,860.

Property and deception offences had the largest increase in the last 12 months, up 14.2 per cent or 47,031 to 378,884 offences. The main driver of the increase was theft offences, up 37,676 to 245,975 offences due to stealing from a motor vehicle offences, which increased 18,577 to 86,600

offences in the last 12 months.

In the 12 months to 30 September 2025, the number of criminal incidents increased, up 12.3 per cent or 52,780 to 483,313 incidents. The rate also increased, up 10.4 per cent to 6810.2 per 100,000 Victorians. Criminal incidents have reached their highest recorded figures since the commencement of CSA reporting in 2004-05.

Alleged offender incidents increased 16.4 per cent to 197,143 in the last 12 months, as did the rate up 14.3 per cent to 3134.2 per 100,000. Theft incidents increased by 24.4 per cent or 8873 to 45,287 alleged offender incidents. Specifically, stealing from a retail store incidents increased 28.5 per cent or 4558 to 20,576 alleged offender incidents.

The victimisation rate increased by 9.5 per cent to 3935.1 reports per 100,000 Victorians. The

number of person-related victim reports was up 11.4 per cent to 279,269 and organisation reports was up 15.1 per cent to 116,750. The rise in victim reports made by individual people was primarily driven by thefts (up 18.6 per cent to 131,131).

Family incidents increased by 3.2 per cent in the last 12 months, with 105,379 incidents recorded across Victoria. The rate also increased, up 1.5 per cent or 1484.9 incidents per 100,000 Victorians.

CSA Chief Statistician Fiona Dowsley said that the number of family violence serious assault recorded by Victoria Police is at its highest levels since 2016.

“A key contributor to the increase has been the new choke/strangle/suffocate family member offence, which came into effect in October 2024.”

Ms Dowsley said.

Deadly year rams home the importance of road safety Road safety will remain a key focus for Victoria Police in 2026 following another tragic year on the state’s roads.

There were 288 lives lost in 2025 compared with 284 in 2024.

While the provisional number of lives lost is higher than last year, it came in slightly below 2023 when 295 lives lost were recorded.

2023 recorded a 15-year high for road fatalities. The previous high was 303 lives lost in 2008.

While single vehicle fatal collisions deceased slightly in 2025, concerningly the number of multiple fatality collisions increased.

2025 saw 14 double fatalities, three triple fatalities and one quadruple fatality resulting in the deaths of 41 people, compared to 13 double fatalities in 2024 resulting in 26 deaths.

Vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, motorcyclists, pillion passengers, bicyclists and e-riders made up more than 40 per cent of all lives lost on Victorian roads in 2025.

There were 52 pedestrians killed, which is the highest number of pedestrian deaths in 17-years since 59 in 2008.

The number of motorcyclists killed decreased from 66 in 2024 to 59 in 2025.

Driver fatalities made up 42 per cent of all lives lost during 2025, with 121 driver deaths compared to 127 in 2024.

(File, Joe Mastroianni) Around half of lives lost occurred on regional roads, with 147 fatalities recorded. This was similar in 2024 with 146 fatalities recorded.

There were 141 lives lost on metropolitan roads, slightly up from 138 in 2024.

May was the deadliest month on Victoria’s roads with 38 lives lost, followed closely by 36 in January.

Police have identified single acts of noncompliance or people making basic driving errors contributed to more than half of fatalities in 2025.

These are behaviours such as low-range speeding, lower-level drink driving, failing to

obey road signs and distraction like using a mobile phone while driving.

There has been an increase in lives lost as a result of head-on collisions with another vehicle, with failing to keep left the most common factor in head-on fatalities.

This indicates that drivers are drifting out of their lane into oncoming traffic, most likely due to inattention, distraction, or fatigue.

At least 10 per cent of people killed in vehicle collisions weren’t wearing a seatbelt.

Speed has been a factor in at least 30 per cent of fatal collisions in 2025 and remains the highest contributing factor in road trauma.

Police are determined to drive down road trauma in 2026 and are urging all road users to consider their actions and behaviours when getting behind the wheel this year.

Victoria Police will continue to work closely with its road safety partners to reduce the number of fatal and serious injury collisions.

Police will continue to prioritise road policing enforcement with a number of statewide operations to be conducted throughout the year.

Roadside alcohol and drug testing will be a major focus with motorists warned to expect to be tested anywhere, any time.

Victoria Police conducts three million preliminary breath tests every year and has been recently funded by the Transport Accident Commission to uplift roadside drug testing by an extra 25,000 tests to 175,000 annually.

The 2025 figures released today are provisional only.

Victoria Police is now counting the Geelong police service area in metropolitan lives lost figures with the Surf Coast counted in regional lives lost.

IN BRIEF Heatwave A heatwave warning has been released by the The Bureau of Meteorology this week, kicking off summer with a bang, with an expected high of 41°C on Wednesday.

The severe heatwave warning was issued for the North East and East Gippsland, with a prolonged period of heat forecast to build over Victoria this week, increasing in temperature as the week progresses.

Heatwaves and individual days of extreme heat can be very dangerous, especially for those more at-risk populations including people aged 65 years and over, babies and young children, and those with certain medical conditions.

In preparation for the forecast heat, the Victorian Department of Health recommend taking precautions to stay safe.

Stay Cool and Hydrated: Drink plenty of water and use air conditioning or fans. Consider visiting an air-conditioned public space like a shopping center or library.

Stay Indoors: Remain inside or in the shade during the hottest parts of the day.

Check on Others: Look out for elderly neighbors, family, and friends who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

Recognise Symptoms: Be aware of heat illness signs like dizziness, cramps, nausea, or fainting.

The Victorian Court of Appeal has refused a Gembrook man’s appeal against his convictions for historical child sexual abuse. (On file: 173239)

Appeal court backs child abuse verdict The Victorian Court of Appeal has backed the jury’s verdict after closely examining the evidence and rejected a bid to overturn the conviction of a man found guilty of historical child sexual abuse.

The case centred on two incidents alleged to have occurred at a Gembrook property.

While the complainant also spoke about a third incident at another location, that allegation was not part of the charges before the jury.

A judge in an earlier trial had ruled there was no reliable evidence to support that third allegation and directed a not-guilty verdict on it.

The applicant argued the jury could not reasonably have found him guilty, pointing to what he described as inconsistencies in the complainant’s account, particularly regarding the timing, sequence, and location of the alleged incidents.

The complainant had given evidence recalling that she was nine years old at the time of the first two incidents, but other evidence suggested she would have been closer to ten or eleven.

She also described the third incident as occurring after the first two, yet records showed the event took place at a house the family had occupied years before moving to the Gembrook property.

The complainant further described a gap of “a few years” before reporting the matter to her grandmother, which the applicant argued con-

flicted with the prosecution’s timeline and cast doubt on her credibility.

The prosecution responded that these inconsistencies did not undermine the substance of the complainant’s allegations.

They emphasised that the complainant was only 14 when giving evidence and was recalling events from several years earlier, a situation in which minor errors in timing or sequence are common.

Her statements regarding her age, the spacing of incidents, and the timing of her complaints were often tentative, reflecting the difficulty of recalling events from childhood.

The prosecution also stated that the circumstances described by the complainant aligned with the reality of the Gembrook property, including details about sleeping arrangements and the opportunity for the offences to occur, supporting the credibility of her account.

The jury had also been carefully directed on the third incident, which had been found unreliable, and instructed to consider it only in assessing her credibility with respect to the offences charged.

In considering the appeal, the Court of Appeal stated that the jury has the primary responsibility for assessing witness credibility and weighing evidence.

The exact dates of the offences were not es-

sential beyond establishing that the applicant had the opportunity to commit them at the Gembrook property.

Minor inconsistencies in the complainant’s testimony regarding her age, the sequence of events, and the timing of her complaints were not sufficient to create a reasonable doubt about the applicant’s guilt.

The court state the complainant’s evidence regarding the first and second incidents remained consistent and coherent, and the jury was entitled to accept her account of these events while discounting minor errors or the unreliable third incident.

The court concluded the jury had acted reasonably in convicting the applicant, and the inconsistencies raised did not undermine the core allegations.

The application for leave to appeal was therefore refused, declaring the principle that minor inconsistencies in a witness’s account, especially when recalling traumatic events from childhood, do not automatically negate the credibility of their testimony.

The decision demonstrates the careful balance courts and juries maintain in distinguishing between peripheral errors in memory and the substance of historical allegations, and confirms that juries are entitled to make these distinctions when evaluating evidence.

A number of drivers have been pulled over by the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol in early January.

Friday 2 saw a 20-year-old male detected speeding at 130 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Stud Road in Rowville.

He was issued with a $1,018 penalty notice and he will be disqualified from driving for 12-months.

In Mount Evelyn, an 18-year-old male probationary driver was detected speeding at 104 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, police reported that he had only been licenced for 2 weeks.

The teen was issued with an $865 penalty notice and his licence will be suspended for 6-months.

In Basin-Olinda Rd, Olinda, a 38-year-old male driver returned a positive Preliminary Breath Test (PBT) for alcohol, then later blew a Evidentiary Breath Test (EBT) result of 0.133.

His licence was immediately suspended for 12-months and he was issued with an $865 penalty notice.

By Corey Everitt The Dandenong Ranges’ nationally iconic Puffing Billy Railway has marked 125 years of choo-choo through the hills.

Starting as a working line and now a cornerstone of Victoria’s tourism industry, Sunday 14 December saw steam puffing from Belgrave to Gembrook in celebration of 125 years of the railway.

A special community open day was held for the first time, providing complimentary services for hills residents to honour the rich history of the railway that was kept alive by locals.

“Celebrating 125 years of Puffing Billy Railway is more than marking a milestone; it’s about honouring the deep and lasting connection we share with our local community,” Puffing Billy Railway CEO Stefanie Straub said.

“Puffing Billy has always been more than a train; it’s a living part of our region’s story. As we look to the future, our vision is to create a connected heritage corridor where vibrant villages and iconic rail history inspire wonder, discovery and authentic local experiences, celebrating community, culture and nature.

“This inaugural Community Open Day is our way of saying thank you to the people who continue to support and inspire us, and of reaffirming our commitment to a railway that belongs to everyone.”

Originally launched on 18 December 1900, Puffing Billy is a treasured remnant of a more leisurely era.

Built to carry goods and passengers through the Dandenong Ranges, the historic railway was a vital lifeline for the region.

The line, which ran between Upper Ferntree Gully and Gembrook, faced numerous challenges. By the early 1930s, it had become a financial burden for Victorian Railways, and following a major landslide in 1953, the decision was made to close the line in 1954.

However, a series of farewell trips in 1955 sparked public interest and community efforts that eventually led to the line’s revival.

Tourist services resumed in 1962 between Belgrave and Menzies Creek, with extensions to Emerald in 1965, Lakeside in 1975 and finally Gembrook in 1998.

Since its reopening, more than 11 million passengers have experienced the magic of Puffing Billy.

An animal cruelty hotspot

By Callum Ludwig The Yarra Ranges has been singled out as a hotspot for animal cruelty in the RSPCA’s annual Animal Cruelty Report for 2024/25.

The Yarra Ranges had the second-highest number of animals seized or surrendered of any local government area, only behind Casey.

Chief Inspector Michelle Green said RSPCA Victoria’s Inspectors respond to animal cruelty throughout Victoria every day of the year.

“Right across the state, there’s been an increase in animal cruelty reports as the drought, cost-of-living crisis and mental health struggles of Victorians continues to rise,” she said.

“In particular, reports of animal hoarding situations rose 48 per cent in the last financial year, and these cases often see large numbers of animals suffering from neglect.”

In total, 108 animals were rescued by the RSPCA in the Yarra Ranges in 2024/25, with 1870 seizures or surrenders statewide. The total statewide figure was down by 16.89 per cent from 2250 the year before, but the Yarra Ranges figure was greater than each of the two previous years (25 in 23/24 and 57 in 22/23).

RSPCA Inspectorate Team Leaderfor the North-East (which covers the Yarra Ranges) Belinda Dent said there was 543 animals from the north-east seized by, or surrendered to, RSPCA Inspectors.

“The majority of what we deal with is not malicious cruelty, but neglect stemming from financial stress, poor access to feed, or personal challenges like mental health issues,” she said.

“These situations are incredibly complex, and our job is to balance enforcing animal welfare laws with helping people do better by their pets.

“Wherever possible, my team and I try to support owners before things reach a crisis point.

This may be providing emergency pet food, bedding or kennels, or helping with preventative flea and worming treatments.”

RSPCA Inspectorate North-East Team Leader Belinda Dent. (Supplied) A total of 270 reports were received in the Yarra Ranges in 2024/25, accounting for 1.69 reports per 1000 residents.

Ms Dent said sometimes, the animals’ owners recognise their animal’s well-being is at risk and choose to surrender their animal into their care, while sometimes, they need to step in and seize their animal.

“Other cases involved households simply being overwhelmed by the number of animals they had taken in,” she said.

“In the north-east region, we are continually seeing unwanted litters due to animals not being desexed, leaving owners struggling to meet the demands of providing basic care for many, vulnerable young animals.

“We’re extremely fortunate to work closely with local police and councils, and this support helps us to care for the community and their pets.”

In 2024/25, more than 10,000 animal cruelty reports were made by members of the public, with 1,870 animals being seized by or surrendered to RSPCA Victoria’s Inspectorate, almost double the number of animals seized or surrendered ten years ago.

Reports of horses facing cruelty were one of the biggest changes, with a 32 per cent increase in cruelty reports involving horses (1197 reports) and a 23 per cent increase in the number of horses seized or surrendered (209 horses).

The top types of cruelty reports were insufficient food, water or shelter (7916 reports, up 43.3 per cent), a husbandry issue (3936 reports, down 7.1 per cent) and underweight animal reports (3051 reports, up 22.28 per cent).

Ms Green said they encourage people to educate themselves on how to properly manage and care for their animals and to seek help before animals suffer.

“Our Inspectors are seeing basic animal neglect much more often than malicious cruelty, this includes animals with insufficient food, water and shelter, and those who are underweight,” she said.

“Part of this neglect are also husbandry concerns such as farrier attention, shearing and living conditions – particularly on hobby farms and acreage properties where they have livestock to maintain properties.

“When they can, our Inspectors can help with emergency pet food to struggling households, along with providing a range of other supports such as including donated kennels or bedding for pets and preventative flea and worming treatments.”

zas being made, and the broader community came together, sharing a meal and celebrating local culture.

Over the year, his pizza nights raised nearly $5000 for the festival alone.

Beyond the festival, his cafe also supported people in need through initiatives like the Pay It Forward board, making sure everyone could en-

joy a meal regardless of their circumstances.

He always offered whatever he could, even as simple as having extra lemons at home, he’d put a note on his shop or on a Facebook page to let community members know if anyone needed them.

Both Mr Rice and Mr Palmer showed that supporting a community was not just about writing cheques; it was about showing up, listening, or-

ganising, and quietly creating opportunities for people to connect and be cared for.

Their efforts went beyond money; they created moments of joy, awareness, and inclusion.

Through their work, they demonstrated that even small organisations and local businesses could make a massive difference when guided by generosity, consistency, and care.

In a year full of challenges, two people quietly but powerfully showed what it meant to give back to their communities.

For this year’s Star Mail Ranges Trader and Ferntree Gully papers, the Gully Market president, Ian Rice, and Little Hendrix Cafe owner and chef, Alex Palmer, have been named People of the Year for 2025 - both incredibly generous and went out of their way to ensure their communities were supported, cared for, and included.

Mr Rice and his team at the Gully Market donated a total of $8000 to local organisations helping the most vulnerable members of the community.

The Gully Market donated $3000 to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s Specialist Prostate Cancer Care Nurses program to address the shortage of nurses available to support men and their families through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.

Mr Rice and his team had recognised that while breast cancer services received significant funding, prostate cancer services were far more limited, and they wanted to make a difference where it counted.

He said raising awareness was as important as providing funding and that sometimes the biggest impact came from letting people know that help existed.

The Gully Market also donated $5000 to local organisations, including Foothills Community Care and the Ferntree Gully Salvation Army, to help fund Christmas lunches, hampers, gifts, and food relief for families who might otherwise have missed out.

Mr Rice emphasised that the market was not a huge organisation, but every extra dollar after covering costs went straight to those in need.

He spoke with genuine humility about the impact the market had, whether it was providing money for essential services or sparking other acts of generosity in the community.

He also encouraged men over 50 to get tested for prostate cancer, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and the life-saving difference awareness can make.

Meanwhile, in Belgrave, Alex Palmer turned his love of food into a way of bringing people together while raising funds for important local causes.

Through Little Hendrix Cafe, he ran a series of donation-based pizza nights that raised thousands of dollars for the Lantern Festival, the Belgrave Traders Association, and the CFA. He made sure these events were inclusive: everyone was welcome, even if they could not afford to donate, and he involved other local businesses in the process, from supplying ingredients to helping run the events.

Mr Palmer’s fundraisers had a real, tangible impact.

His pizza nights helped cover the costs of staging, AV, performers, and other essentials for the Belgrave Lantern Festival, ensuring that it could continue despite funding shortfalls.

Ranges look back for 2025 If it feels like you took a deep breath, blinked a few times and 2025 was over, you aren’t alone.

Across the Ranges and Ferntree Gully areas Star Mail cover, the paper saw countless newsworthy events blitz by as the Yarra Ranges lived, worked and played in our beautiful hills, all while coping with the regular challenges of life.

Month by month, here are some of the stories that crossed the newsroom floor.

January sets off alarms for community in health 2025 took off quickly and life did not slow down for residents when Upper Ferntree Gully’s Angliss Hospital announced plans for the closure its Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in January, bringing causing initial concerns, however renovations that year reopened the unit ahead of schedule.

Originally scheduled to reopen in August, the unit resumed full service on 30 June, well ahead of plan.

The ICU was temporarily closed on 3 March to facilitate the progression of stage two of Eastern Health Angliss’ redevelopment project.

At the time, the decision, driven by ongoing construction works at the hospital, sparked serious concerns about the impact on patient care, hospital operations, and the local community.

February sees paddle boats leave for good and weather events impact everyone As prep began for the year, there was sad news in Emerald as a local business closed up for good, while the region dealt with summer weather systems that kept emergency responders very busy.

The beloved paddle boats were announced to be closing down at Emerald Lake and the attraction stopped running by 9 February.

Early February saw temperatures soar and a power widespread outage as a result, in what Ausnet has described as a ‘challenging’ weekend.

The tail end of some weather systems had crossed the state over the weekend, and Sunday 9 February, saw residents of nearly 5,000 homes in Ferntree Gully, Sassafras, Boronia, The Basin, Ferny Creek, Upwey and more drop power overnight.

The weather did more than drop power; it also caused many fires from lightning strikes, including one which took out the local community radio station’s antenna, located in Kallista.

CFA confirmed in early 2025 that by February, over 200 fires caused by lightning had occurred in Victoria.

This includes 71 incidents in the North East Region, which covers the Yarra Ranges, and 67 incidents in the South East Region.

Summer storm weather did not let up, and the weekend of 22 and 23 February saw high callouts reported by SES Emerald and Knox, with lots of fallen trees causing havoc.

Tiny Homes seen as a solution for many, but poses a massive issue for local council In March, what had began as a hopeful plea to the Yarra Ranges Council for flexible housing options ended in disappointment for Belgrave South tiny house residents, Evrim Sen and partner Benny.

Despite the initial support from councillors, the couple had no choice but to leave the area they had called home for the past three years.

Cost-of-living, a rental crisis and a housing market out of reach for many, the council’s ultimate ruling was that the couple must leave their tiny home on wheels.

Ms Sen, who has lived in her tiny house on wheels for three years and had hoped to settle in the region, build a life, and start a family.

Despite community support and a petition with over 1000 signatures urging the council to allow tiny homes on wheels as legitimate housing, Ms Sen and Mr Redfern were told to vacate their home by the end of July and have already been evicted, with the tiny house itself required to be moved as well.

Stating that he fully acknowledged it was a complex issue, Mayor at the time, Cr Jim Child said that many community members feel strongly about it.

The Statewide and local regulations that govern the use of Tiny Homes, and non-compliance can result in enforcement action.

While some planning exemptions exist for small second dwellings, they do not automatically apply to Tiny Homes.

In the Yarra Ranges, many properties have planning overlays including bushfire management, environmental significance, erosion management and land subject to inundation overlays.

Director of Planning and Sustainable Futures, Kath McClusky said to a resident at question time in August that the rules that govern the placement and use of Small Second Dwellings are set by the State Government and apply across all Victorian councils, which are then embedded into the Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme and the Building Regulations.

“Yarra Ranges Council cannot change these

planning or building requirements, nor does Council have flexibility in how they are applied,” she said.

Ms McClusky said the council understand the issues confronting the community and that they continue to engage with State bodies, while being committed to reviewing Local Law. “We are actively listening,” she said.

Huge community relief in April, as young Parsa was found Against the challenging terrain of the Dandenong Ranges and cold nighttime conditions, a young boy was found in the early hours of a Saturday morning in April by a young Kalorama resident out mountain biking.

Six-year-old Parsa Naimi was found around 8.20am Saturday 19 April by a local Kalorama resident, Asher Schinkfield, eight kilometres from where he went missing.

Parsa travelled around eight kilometres north of the playspace overnight and the young boy had been wearing an AirTag, but he had taken it off.

Emergency service staff and search and rescue volunteers all searched but had no luck locating him, while the family were supported by the local community as they waited.

Mountain biker Asher Shinkfield was out for his morning ride and had heard the little boy was missing, but did not expect to find him.

“I was coming up the fire road and saw him just on the side of the road,” he said.

On having found the young boy, Asher said it did make him feel good, but that the huge community effort was amazing.

May sees Legacy award begun Elias’s name A memorial award was given out for the first time on Friday 23 May in honour of police officer and community member Elias Gerovasilis, who tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident at just 22.

The local tragedy spurred on the establishment of the award by Victoria Police to recognise an individual who has shown outstanding effort and involvement in Road Safety within the Yarra Ranges Police Service Area.

First-time winner of the award, Leading Senior Constable James Savin, hugged Elias’ parents Bill and Janine as he received the award.

The family, along with Elias’ older brother, Joaquim, and younger sister, Poppy, are well known in the Tecoma area.

In his short time as a police officer at Belgrave,

Elias had a big impact and his passing has been felt deeply by family, police and the wider community.

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give, Winston Churchill said that,” LSC Savin said.

“Elias is not with us, but he lives on in this project.”

The Elias Gerovasilis memorial award is peernominated and selected, and will now be awarded on 23 May each year.

June: serious erosion issues emerge for the Ranges New mapping revealed that the risk for landslides in the Yarra Ranges is much higher than previously thought and has prompted the council to rush to adopt new erosion management overlays (EMO).

Commissioned by the Yarra Ranges Council after the June 2021 storms, the “concerning” report was delivered in late April 2025 and identified a whopping 13,400 landslide-prone properties.

By December 2025, the matter had seen growing concerns from residents and after much debate, councillors ultimately voted in favour of sending the amendment to an independent planning panel at their final meeting for the year.

Winter robberies hit business in July In July, Emerald business owners were left reeling after a series of overnight break-ins targeted three shops along Kilvington Drive.

Hush Beauty and Skin, Bill’s Fish ‘n’ Chips and The Laughing Fox Cafe were all hit, with damage discovered around 5am on Thursday, 24 July, when a passer-by reported smashed storefronts.

The break-ins involved vandalism and alleged theft, leaving owners and staff shocked as they arrived to assess the damage.

Hush Beauty and Skin owner Jessica Callahan said it appeared a sledgehammer had been used in an attempt to access cash, adding it was the second break-in the business had faced in six months. Staff spent the morning cleaning up broken glass and damage inside the treatment space.

Despite damage to its front door, The Laughing Fox Cafe opened for business the same day.

Owner Ali said staff were initially shaken but determined to keep going. “We are open today, better to show that we are strong,” he said. The cafe has operated in Emerald for six years and had never experienced a break-in before.

YEAR IN REVIEW The incidents followed reports of similar break-ins earlier that week in nearby Kallista and Olinda, raising concerns among Dandenongs business owners.

Victoria Police confirmed Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit was investigating the Emerald burglaries, saying it was believed the three businesses were broken into sometime overnight. The investigation remains ongoing.

For the Emerald community, the July breakins were a stark reminder of the vulnerability of local traders, but also highlighted their resilience in the face of disruption.

Devastating fire in Hoddles Creek In August, the Yarra Ranges was shaken by one of the most devastating fires of the year, when a Hoddles Creek woman in her 70s was seriously injured after her home was destroyed by fire.

The blaze broke out at a property on Grover Road on the night of Saturday, 2 August, with emergency services called just after 9.30pm.

Hoddles Creek CFA crews arrived to find the single-storey weatherboard house fully engulfed, the glow of the flames visible from the road.

Hoddles Creek CFA first lieutenant Brett Kerford said the fire was already well established when firefighters reached the scene.

“As we came around the bend, we could see the red glow coming from the house,” he said.

“By the time we arrived, it was completely involved and there wasn’t much chance of saving anything.”

The woman managed to escape the burning home before firefighters arrived, but suffered serious burns and smoke inhalation while trying to contain the fire herself. She made her way to a neighbour’s property, where Triple Zero (000) was called.

Ambulance Victoria dispatched multiple crews, including a Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance and an air ambulance, and the woman was airlifted in a serious condition to Angliss Hospital.

Nine CFA units responded, supported by neighbouring brigades, Emerald SES and Victoria Police. The fire was brought under control just after 10.15pm and declared safe later that night.

While the cause remains under investigation, early indications suggest the blaze was accidental and may have started in a wood heater.

Tragically, two pet puppies were also lost in the fire, making an already heartbreaking incident even harder for the local community.

A driving force behind the establishment of Selby Community House and an icon in her own right, community members came together in August to honour Jocelyn Selby in a Celebration of Life.

Jocelyn’s son, David Aytan, said the gathering had an enormous amount of love around it.

“More than anything else, she was surrounded by her people,” he said.

A great conservationist and lover of nature who believed in communal living, Jocelyn was part of a tremendous time of community action and development in Sherbrooke from the early 1970s through to the mid-1980s.

The Selby Community House, as it stands today, may not have come to be if not for Jocelyn’s influence.

Planting for the future in September In September, the feel-good story of the month came from the Dandenong Ranges, where Belgrave Heights Christian School celebrated 15 years of its much-loved Keen on Green planting day.

The event took place on Wednesday, 10 September and brought students, parents, staff and Federal Member for Casey Aaron Violi together to plant 1400 native trees and shrubs along the Monbulk Creek corridor.

Principal Peter Cliffe said Keen on Green was about more than planting trees, describing it as a chance to instil responsibility and care for the environment in students.

Over 15 years, more than 15,000 native plants have been established and transformed the grounds into a thriving habitat and encouraging the return of local wildlife.

Students from different year levels worked side by side, with older students mentoring younger buddies.

Year 6 school captain Eleanor Bird said the day reflected the school’s values.

“We value trees and the life they bring. Keen on Green is always a great day,” she said.

For the Belgrave Heights community, September’s Keen on Green event marked another step in a growing legacy of environmental stewardship.

Weather statistics roll in for October In October, Ferntree Gully claimed the unenviable title of Victoria’s top severe weather hotspot, according to recent data from insurer AAMI.

Belgrave Heights planting in spring. (On File) Analysis of natural disaster claims from July 2022 to June 2025 revealed the suburb has been hardest hit by wind, hail, and storms, with homes and businesses suffering widespread damage and significant social and economic impacts.

Knox SES unit controller Kristian Schouten said the suburb’s location at the base of the Dandenong Ranges, combined with dense vegetation, steep terrain, and older housing, makes it particularly vulnerable.

Mr Schouten said short, intense storm cells in recent years have added to the risk, while preventable issues like untrimmed trees, blocked gutters, and a lack of emergency planning have contributed to the damage.

Ferntree Gully tops AAMI’s severe weather rankings, followed by Rochester, Shepparton, Mulgrave, and Mornington.

Major events driving claims included Victoria’s October 2022 floods, the November 2022 floods, and February 2024 storms.

Knox SES has been proactive in preparing the community, encouraging residents to clear gutters, secure outdoor items, trim overhanging branches, and prepare an emergency plan and kit.

Josh Kelland from AAMI said the data is a timely reminder to prepare homes and families

for summer disasters, while Mr Schouten urged the community to take simple but effective steps to reduce risk.

In November, the community farewelled “Mr Monbulk” In November, the Monbulk community mourned the loss of Raymond Leslie Yates, fondly known as “Mr Monbulk,” who passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 86.

Mr Yates dedicated 38 years to Monbulk Primary School, 28 as principal, transforming it from a struggling institution into a thriving centre of learning.

Principal Estelle Alder said he “wasn’t just a principal, he was a part of every student’s life,” always remembering former students’ names and showing genuine care.

His legacy includes the Raymond Yates Arts Centre, which continues to give students opportunities in music and the arts.

Beyond education, Mr Yates was a pillar of the wider community.

He served as a Shire Councillor for 21 years, including a term as Mayor of the Shire of Lillydale, and contributed to numerous local organisations such as the Monbulk RSL, Rotary Club, and Yarra Ranges Regional Museum.

He helped establish the Japara Community

House in Kilsyth and a community bank in Monbulk, which still serves the area today.

Tributes poured in from across the region.

Casey federal MP Aaron Violi praised Mr Yates for being “truly immersed in community life,” while Bendigo Bank Monbulk and District closed to attend his memorial.

Students at Monbulk Primary School honoured him with drawings and by ringing the school’s Bell Tower 38 times, once for each year he served as principal.

Mr Yates is remembered as a devoted husband to Cathie, father to Richard and Samuel, stepfather and Poppa to Clare, Marcus, and their families, and a beloved brother.

His commitment to education, local government, and community life leaves a lasting impact on Monbulk, where his legacy of leadership, mentorship, and service will continue to be felt for generations.

In December, Belgrave’s Cameo Cinema celebrated a remarkable milestone, turning 90 years old.

More than just a place to watch movies, the cinema has long been a cherished community hub, creating memories, fostering connections, and bringing the magic of film to life for generations.

Cameo Cinema manager Danielle Burgess said the venue’s enduring appeal reflects the town’s love of cinema.

“I think it is a testament to this community’s love of cinema, we wouldn’t be here without our incredible customer base, and I think our customers know that the love goes both ways,” she said.

The cinema has remained committed to accessibility, with features like wheelchair access and hearing loops to ensure everyone can enjoy the experience.

The cinema has faced challenges, including a near-demolition in 1995, but passionate locals fought to have it heritage-listed.

“Multiple times throughout history, it has been threatened by recessions, wars, and changing audience habits, but it has remained open thanks to owners and community members who love cinema,” Ms Burgess said.

Long-time customers and locals echoed the cinema’s significance. Ferntree Gully resident Myra Camm described weekly visits as a treasured outing, while Mooroolbark resident Gerdina Jansen said it is “part of what makes this town special.”

Local businesses also highlighted the cinema’s role in supporting the community and economy.

To mark the anniversary, Cameo hosted a week of special events, including discounted tickets, combo deals, and a retrospective screening featuring one film from each decade, including David Copperfield, the first movie shown at the cinema in 1935.

For nearly a century, Cameo Cinema has remained a place where people gather, share experiences, and feel at home.

“As long as people love movies and love this place, Cameo will keep thriving, one story, one screening, and one generation at a time,” Ms Burgess said.

A hotbed for discussion The Star Mail’s six-week ‘Capturing the Yarra Ranges’ campaign narrowed in on the dilapidated CCTV network in the region in 2025, proving a hotbed for discussion.

The campaign, which was highly commended at the Victorian Country Press Association (VCPA) awards, saw the team hear views from a range of community members, consult experts in the field and press for answers.

The campaign began when a petition landed at the door of the Star Mail’s Healesville office in December 2024, courtesy of local resident Penelle, who had concerns due to a theft at a previous workplace and her experiences with a stalker.

After following up with Penelle in February 2025, the Star Mail found that many of the cameras, installed through grants from the Safer Communities Fund between 2013 and 2019, had gone offline in the years following.

Cameras were installed in 13 townships throughout the region at a total cost of over $1 million.

Mooroolbark Police Sergeant Cal Cunningham explained that cameras are hosted by businesses across the townships with signal boxes also installed to carry the footage back to the police station.

Sgt Cunningham said the camera network is invaluable to both live police investigations and accessing footage after the fact.

Trader and township groups were largely in favour of a well-maintained CCTV network, with supporters including the Mooroolbark Traders and Community Group, Monbulk and District Community Working Group (who have successfully maintained their cameras after taking over from the Monbulk Business Network), Millgrove Residents’ Action Group, Seville Township Group, Warburton Advancement League, Healesville Traders (who took over from the Healesville Chamber of Commerce) and the former president of the Yarra Glen Chamber of Commerce.

“There’s been requests made to the Police Minister for some money. It’s gone to council, and everything has fallen on deaf ears from everybody,” Mooroolbark Traders and Community Group president Geoff Earney said.

“The Monbulk township funds all management and upkeep of the cameras, and our traders have been an incredible support in funding to ensure that we have cameras for the safety of our community,” MADCOW Co-President Aimee te Boekhorst said.

“The War Memorial subcommittee of the township group has been trying so hard to find out what is actually going on with the funding that was originally given to have a camera go in for us and we’re still struggling to know why we can’t get any answers and why it’s taken so long,” Vice President of the Seville Township Group Sue McMurdie said.

The Seville War Memorial Committee, part of the Seville Township Group, were also disappointed by the lack of CCTV which they believed could have helped prevent the vandalism that occurred at the memorial in 2023, with an announcement of donated CCTV cameras to protect the site made in November 2025.

The owners of the IGA (Shane Wyles) and Charlie Horse Vintage Clothing store (Charlie Gaultier) in Warburton also expressed their support, while CCTV was a suggestion put forward by owner of the TerryWhite Chemmart in Wandin North Nabih Barsoum following a break in at the pharmacy in June 2024.

However CCTV does not come without its concerns, with invasion of privacy, data collection and misuse the main issues and it is important to discuss what could constitute overreach, while others wanted to see active policing prioritised.

Members of the My Place Yarra Valley group (MPYV), the community group which shut down Yarra Ranges Council meetings in 2024 in their opposition to the concept of ‘20-minute neighbourhoods’, are sceptical of global and local governance, 5G mobile connectivity and CCTV and digital surveillance.

“A ‘smart city’ designed for safety, convenience and efficiency could be exploited for total surveillance of every citizen’s movements, interactions, and behaviours, potentially used to silence critics or control public opinion,” founder of MPYV Belinda Modesti said.

“There’s no police in town from Friday to Sunday, I like that there’s concern about the rate of crime in town but without proper policing, not even a car cruising around, I don’t think cameras will do what people want them to,” Healesville resident and owner of The Mare Coffee Company James Lee said.

The Star Mail ran a six-week campaign on the run-down CCTV network in the Yarra Ranges. (461353) Former Star Mail journalist Andrew Kwon also shared his thoughts on CCTV through the lens of his experience growing up in South Korea, which has an extensive public CCTV network as well as installs cameras in cars.

“A Korean was exposed to CCTV cameras at least 24 times a day on average… I looked up the number again to write this column and found out the number increased to 98 times for people in their 30s and 40s per day on average in 2021,” he said.

Griffith University lecturer in criminology and

criminal justice Dr Ausma Bernot detailed the “privacy paradox”, a disconnect between what communities want, like that of the Yarra Ranges, and the use and need for effective law enforcement.

“A good place to start is with transparency. So, for instance, how many cameras are we installing?

Law enforcement might not want to say where those cameras are for investigatory purposes, but it’s good to say how many cameras are maintained,” Dr Bernot said.

Research manager at the Australian Institute

of Criminology Anthony Morgan co-authored the research article ‘Does CCTV Help Police Solve Crime’ which found that while whether CCTV helps to solve crime is hard to determine, it can be highly valuable.

“We know that nine in 10 investigators reported using the footage when it was available… and twothirds said they were able to use it for the reason that they’d actually requested the footage,” he said.

The Labor, Liberal (eventual winner Aaron Violi), Greens and Independent candidates for the seat of Casey all expressed support for a return of the CCTV network in some form ahead of the election, while state MPs Cindy McLeish and Bridget Vallence also backed CCTV in their communities.

After many conversations, the Star Mail team weighed up potential solutions.

As a State Government entity, Victoria Police would be unable to manage any funds or grants to operate the CCTV system.

The Federal Government provided the initial funding to install the cameras but don’t have the scope to manage them, while the state advocates for partnerships between all three levels of government. Some more sleuthing and inquiries from the Star Mail found that 55 of Victoria’s 79 councils operated public CCTV in some capacity, ranging from extensive networks to small-systems targeting key locations.

Setting on Yarra Ranges Council as the most appropriate authority to manage a CCTV network in the region, the council was non-committal.

Yarra Ranges Council chief executive officer Tammi Rose said it was not possible for the council to fund the CCTV network.

“In a financially constrained environment and during a cost of living crisis, the high cost of maintaining and replacing public CCTV cameras would mean either a reduction of services elsewhere, or ratepayers would find the increased cost reflected in their rates,” she said.

The little remaining funding provided to the Yarra Ranges Safety Camera Network group, set up to manage the network, concluded at the end of the 2024/25 financial year.

Star’s resilience project

By Gabriella Vukman Star Mail was awarded a grant from the Walkley Solutions Journalism Fund to deliver an in-depth journalism project examining how communities across the Yarra Ranges strengthened their resilience to bushfires.

Over five months, the project explored how residents, agencies, Traditional Owners and scientists worked together to address bushfire risk in a region deeply shaped by fire.

The aim was to move beyond disaster-focused reporting and instead highlight practical, evidence-based strategies that strengthened preparedness, supported recovery and built longterm resilience.

To achieve this, Star Mail’s Gabriella Vukman visited sites throughout the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, documenting initiatives including controlled and cultural burning, habitat regeneration, community action groups, firefighter training and emerging preparedness technologies.

Interviews were conducted with residents, fire service professionals, environmental scientists and Indigenous leaders, alongside analysis of data from fire authorities, environmental agencies and academic research.

The project culminated in a series of in-depth articles and seven videos published on the Star Mail YouTube channel, each exploring different dimensions of bushfire resilience, including land management, township action, social trauma recovery, habitat regeneration, firefighter preparedness and community education.

Preparedness, - a unifying theme Preparation for an increasingly dangerous bushfire season emerged as a consistent theme across every community, agency and landscape in the Yarra Ranges. With forecasts indicating heightened fire risk, residents, volunteer groups and authorities alike emphasised that readiness was critical to protecting lives, property and the environment.

While each part of the Yarra Ranges faced unique bushfire risks due to differing terrain, vegetation and weather patterns, several universal preparedness measures were consistently reinforced.

Central among these was the importance of having a clear, well-practised bushfire plan.

Community leaders and fire authorities encouraged residents to know their trigger to leave, plan evacuation routes, prepare essential items, make arrangements for pets and livestock, and stay informed through reliable warning systems such as the VicEmergency app.

Pet preparedness was identified as a significant barrier to early evacuation. Community safety advocates worked to address this by encouraging residents to plan dog-friendly destinations, organise carriers for smaller animals and identify safe locations for livestock well before extreme fire danger days.

These practical solutions aimed to remove hesitation and support early evacuation.

Making homes more fire-resilient was another major focus. Measures such as installing gutter guards, clearing fine fuels within 100 metres of buildings, maintaining gardens and protecting vents were repeatedly highlighted as effective ways to reduce ember attack.

In rural and semi-rural areas, broader landscape approaches, including windbreaks, shelter belts and carefully managed grazing, were promoted as complementary tools to reduce fire intensity and protect assets.

Local CFA brigades encouraged residents to attend open days, seek property advice visits and engage with local volunteers to ensure plans reflected suburb-specific risks.

When interviewed, experts also stressed that bushfire behaviour was changing due to climate change, with altered wind patterns, fuel loads and fire frequency requiring communities to continually adapt.

Fire as a land management tool A central focus of the project was how fire was being reintroduced and managed as a tool for both risk reduction and ecological health.

Cultural burning, led by Traditional Owners, was formally incorporated into Yarra Ranges Council’s planned burning program in 2024.

These low-intensity, “cool burns” aimed to heal Country, restore biodiversity and reduce bushfire risk without damaging soil or ecosystems.

New recruits got to practice using the hose as part of Forest Fire Management Victoria’s seasonal firefighter training.

Former Cockatoo CFA Captain Graham Simpson talked about what happened on Ash Wednesday.

(Gabriella Vukman) Coordinator Garry Detez said, “When Aboriginal people cared for the landscapes, they built in natural bushfire mitigation.”

“It’s been a long journey, probably about nine or 10 years but we are implementing it now,” he said.

Wurundjeri man and Indigenous Development Officer Darren Wandin explained that cultural burning prioritised regeneration rather than fuel reduction alone.

“Fuel reduction isn’t the name of the game,” Mr Wandin said.

“What we’re looking at is reintroducing and revitalising existing species,” he said.

Alongside cultural burns, planned burning remained an essential land management practice.

Conducted under strict conditions and managed collectively by the CFA, Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) and the Yarra Ranges Council, planned burns reduced fuel loads, moderated fire behaviour and supported biodiversity.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Tamara Beckett said the program encompassed multiple approaches.

“As part of the Planned Burning Program, we undertake risk reduction burns, ecological burns and cultural burns, so we refer to the whole lot as the planned burning program,” Ms Beckett said.

University of Melbourne bushfire behaviour expert Dr Trent Penman emphasised the need for balance.

“If we leave fire out of many of our ecosystems, we start to lose plant and animal species from those systems,” Dr Penman said.

“It is about finding the right mix of fire, in order to maintain and promote our country’s biodiversity,” he said.

The project also explored emerging practices such as mulching, windbreaks and bushfire moderation zones, which reduced flame height, slowed fire spread and limited ember attack, particularly around built-up areas.

Recovery, Regeneration and Community Leadership Beyond fire prevention, the reporting highlighted the long-term impacts of bushfire on people and landscapes.

At Dr Ken Leversha Reserve in Montrose, early signs of regeneration were visible months after fire had stripped the area of its canopy.

Community groups focused on supporting natural recovery while monitoring threatened species such as Powerful Owls.

Across the region, township and community action groups played a vital role in strengthening preparedness and recovery.

Township and Community Action Groups in Montrose, Warburton, Millgrove, Healesville, Kalorama–Mount Dandenong, Wesburn and Yarra Junction among others, worked on emergency planning, education, signage, energy resilience and community hubs.

The project also examined social trauma recovery, acknowledging that emotional impacts often emerged long after fires were extinguished.

Shared storytelling, education centres and community spaces were shown to be essential in healing and rebuilding confidence.

Preparing Households and Communities Residents were encouraged to develop and rehearse bushfire plans, addressing when to leave, where to go, what to take and how to stay informed. Community advocates consistently stressed that leaving early remained the safest option.

Vice President of the Millgrove Residents Action Group Phil Pomeroff said preparedness begins with simplicity. “bushfire preparedness is having your plan,” Mr Pomeroff said.

“You should leave as early as you can,” he said.

Pet preparedness again emerged as a critical issue. Kalorama CFA Community Safety Coordinator Virginia Porter worked to remove barriers by promoting pet-friendly evacuation options.

“What we found is that a lot of people won’t leave because they can’t take their dogs with them,” Ms Porter said.

“We want people to leave before there is a fire,” she said.

Fuel management near homes was repeatedly highlighted as a priority.

nity Emergency Group said, “The critical amount of fuel is the fuel within 100 metres of an asset.”

“Houses are most likely to burn down if there’s fuel within 100 metres of them,” he said.

Environmental scientist Graeme Lorimer reinforced the importance of location-specific advice.

“Each particular location has its own unique aspects and vegetation,” Mr Lorimer said.

“People need to be aware that things are changing almost year by year.”

Innovation and firefighter readiness The project also showcased innovation in preparedness, including immersive virtual reality training designed to simulate bushfire decisionmaking under pressure. Participants reported increased awareness of stress responses and evacuation timing.

Community Safety Coordinator at the Kalorama CFA, Virginia Porter was also heavily involved in rolling out the new VR program.

Ms Porter said, “The sessions are also about how one’s ideas, judgement and mindset can change under pressure.”

Behind the scenes, firefighter training and readiness formed another critical layer of resilience.

Seasonal training camps in the Yarra Valley prepared hundreds of recruits through intensive hands-on instruction.

“Forest Fire Management Victoria is gearing up for the summer,” said District Manager Dan White.

When it comes to bushfire, regeneration and social recovery, all interviewees noted that these items are a shared responsibility.

“There’s only so much we as public land managers can do,” Deputy Chief Fire Officer Tamara Beckett said. “Residents in bushfire-prone areas need to manage their properties and have a fire plan,” she said.

Across all reporting, a clear conclusion emerged: bushfire resilience in the Yarra Ranges was not built through a single solution. It was created through sustained collaboration between Traditional Owners and councils, agencies and scientists, firefighters and residents, neighbours and communities.

From cultural burning and ecological recovery to township planning, trauma-informed care, new technology and individual preparedness, the solutions highlighted throughout Star Mail’s Walkley-funded project demonstrated that resilience was an ongoing process grounded in shared responsibility, local knowledge and care for both people and Country.

Tragedy unites Hills people

Issues in the Yarra Ranges can often be very similar year to year, and as a community, our achievements and struggles are what bind us together.

The last few years saw the community impacted deeply as we lost some of our younger genera-

tion to teen deaths by suicide and in November, a traumatic accident saw 17-year-old Ben Austin lose his life to a sporting injury in Ferntree Gully.

Crossing national and international news, the community very publicly mourned and honoured the young man, while other parts of the community mourned for teen lives lost to a topic that is quite hard to understand.

As Christmas approached, many families, friends and people were faced with horrible new firsts and a life without their dearest loved young people.

Being aware of the pain that is present, but often not something that is reported on, in this opinion piece, I wanted to acknowledge the impact of this loss. It has been a sombre and silent issue for 2025. I often reflect on words from an interview I did in 2024 with the chief executive officer of Grief Australia Christopher Hall.

With a background in psychology and nearly 30 years in his role at Grief Australia, Mr Hall said that the Australian approach to grieving is not something that we are skilled in at all.

“Our culture sees grief sort of like the flu,” he said.

Most workplace policies give a person three days’ leave for the death of a family member.

“That’s a very strong message,” said Mr Hall.

“People are fundamentally changed by profound experiences of loss, and so often when they’re wanting social support, people have moved on.”

Mr Hall said in matters of grief, as a society, we’ve still got a long way to go.

“These conversations evoke anxiety in people – we often use some other word that attempts to soften the reality of the death,” he said.

“People want to bring solutions; they want to find a way of relieving the person of this pain and suffering, which we cannot do.

“All that we can do is to accompany people, to give them the opportunity to put into words, to put out into the world their experience.”

With a personal acknowledgement, it’s in this vein that I would like to acknowledge the rallying of the community as they threw their support and considerable skill sets towards mental health and suicide prevention in the last part of 2025, while dealing with the loss of these young lives.

They won’t forget.

Mental health workshops, The Forge Institute and many meetings in many community and government groups, the end of 2025 saw the beginnings of many new initiatives to support our young people.

As these seeds are planted, on an individual level, we can all still help.

A small moment of connection with a friend, even just a quick phone call, text or catch-up, can make all the difference in a person’s week.

Connecting with someone, anyone, is not always easy; it’s vulnerable and raw, and small things matter.

There has been some evidence, popularised

by American author and optimist Simon Sinek, that even eight minutes of connection in a deliberate short phone call, to check in on a loved one, can combat loneliness and build trust.

I wonder about phone calls into the future, as I seem to leave more and more messages left unheard on answering machines, but perhaps with a bit of polite intention, maybe I can text first and chat second. As my own ‘digital native’ children step further into this world, I am trying to make sure they still notice the trees, the bugs and keep their wonder.

Chido Mpemba, co-chair of the WHO Commission on Social Connection and Advisor to the African Union Chairperson, said mid-last year that even in a digitally connected world, many young people feel alone.

“As technology reshapes our lives, we must ensure it strengthens – not weakens – human connection,” he said.

As global and national events deliver news of hate, conflict and greed straight out of the gate in 2026, it can be easy to feel altogether quite useless and alone. But I have the privilege to know here where we live, there are some amazing people volunteering and working in the Yarra Ranges right now, for all of us. I see the stunning efforts these people are making every day, investing in our future. Hope is not lost.

For now, I am trying to focus on what I can do, which is to report on my community and the place I love so very much.

Arts bind us all together

By Tanya Steele The Dandenong Ranges is brimming with artists of just about every kind you can imagine from painters, to photographers, musicians and more.

Beyond the bottom line, grassroots arts keep communities together and connected, they are not optional and play an essential role in human existence.

The talented community also connects through events and 2025 saw the regular return of some classics and some new ones as well, here are just a fraction of the art that blossomed across the Ranges in 2025.

Poignant lived art in February Underneath my Umbrella launched their ‘Black and White’ exhibition series in early 2025, bringing topics like family violence, the lived experiences of survivors and the journey they go on to heal themselves into focus.

Sitting quietly in Coonara Community House in Upper Ferntree Gully, the exhibition featured ten stories of hope and encouragement from women who have been through both intense trauma and recovery.

“This is a real woman, this is her and her truth,” said founder of Underneath my Umbrella, artist and exhibit curator Julie at the time.

Capturing the inner spirit of a musician Reporter Shamsiya Hussainpoor spoke with Clematis artist Merryn Emms on a chance encounter on a sunny day in Emerald that sparked a connection that now hangs proudly on the wall of an aged care resident’s room and in the hearts of an entire community.

Ms Emms was walking out of the chemist when she saw Emerald Glades resident, Garry Simmons, seated with his banjo-ukulele, playing music on the street.

Something about the moment gave her pause.

“I just walked past, went back to the car, and thought, ‘Oh, I wonder, could I do it?’” Ms Emms said.

That brief meeting planted the seed for a portrait that would later become ‘The Musician’.

Aussie music platform goes live from Upwey A local musician and radio presenter took on a mammoth task and is out to even the playing field for Australian talent, launching an all-Australian radio channel in early October.

As a musician with a passion for local talent, Freo launched the Local Australian Music Platform (LAMP) not-for-profit after noticing a lack of exposure for Australian artists and decided to do something about it.

“There’s nowhere else for people to get Australian music – so why aren’t we championing it?” he said.

“What if your local barbershop didn’t have a Spotify playlist? What if they were playing 100 per cent Australian music all the time?”

LAMP is an online radio platform, not a streaming service, but Freo said it will deliver better exposure for musicians.

“As an artist, this is where you get authentic exposure for your brand, for your product, for your music,” he said.

Freo continues to campaign for funding and get more Australian music broadcasting.

Life with Seniors in Emerald Long-time Emerald resident and photographer, Paul Bianco, brought presence and the contribution of older community members in the exhibition ‘Life in the Senior’s Lane’.

The exhibition, showcasing a series of photographic portraits, nine individuals, five couples, and a large community group, went on show at the Fernlea Community House Hall in Emerald from 13 to 27 October in conjunction with the Senior Festival.

Literary fest launches Hundreds of literary lovers descended on the town for the very first Dandenong Ranges Literary Festival in October.

Award-winning author Hannah Kent was a special guest for the weekend, and literary folks attended multiple workshops and panel discussions around the town.

This year, the festival’s theme – “A Sense of Place” – encouraged local and visiting authors and audiences to explore and be challenged by the past, present and future of the locales where we live, work and interact with others.

Inspired by the Melbourne Writers Festival, alongside other regional book festivals we can’t wait to see it again next year.

Voices from the Edge returned in Tecoma A second time event in the hills again brought an array of voices from the edge into the spotlight to celebrate art and diversity in Tecoma.

Presenting an afternoon of musical performances, artwork, poetry, drama and facilitated discussion between First Nations, LGBTQIA+ artists, other marginalised voices and the community, the event launched at Tecoma Uniting Church in 2024 and returned in 2025.

Artistic curator Samuel said last year’s event was particularly focused on transgender and nonbinary LGBT representation.

“It’s an opportunity to share the gifts that we are as people and that we are as artists to the community,” they said.

Returning for its second iteration, Voices from the Edge was borne from a need to share art from those on the fringes of society and driven by a passion to project marginalised voices.

Famous Yidaki player Ash Dargan began the afternoon in late 2025 with his iconic and beautiful Yidaki playing. Creative and courageous Stevie Wills performed her spoken word pieces and Ed Moon, queer Jazz singer extraordinaire, crooned and performed playfully.

First Nations artists Merilyn Duff and Amanda Wright had an exhibit of their artwork to enjoy and

buy, along with local queer visual artist and arts psychotherapist Samuel Hardige.

Live music scene struggles Reporter Oliver Winn spoke with Sooki Lounge coowner Stephen Crombie on Federal grants and the live music industry, acknowledging the help but worried about the ongoing mounting costs from insurance.

In March 2024, Federal Minister for Arts Tony Burke commissioned a parliamentary Inquiry into the Challenges and Opportunities within the Australian Live Music Industry.

According to Live Performance Australia’s (LPA) submission to the inquiry, operational costs involved in touring have increased by 30 to 40 per cent.

Meanwhile, insurance premiums have increased tenfold since the Covid-19 pandemic, the cost of living has dampened patron spending, and digital platforms have swayed audience behaviours from live music.

Last year, Mr Crombie claimed insurance costs skyrocketed from $15,000 to $60,000 in the past three years, despite the venue having no claim history in its 11 years of operating.

“It’s the same old story since Covid-19 – your costs have risen by double and plus some.”

“People don’t have any money. We live in a subscription-based society, so it’s harder to get people out.

“You’ve got no domestic bands touring, and they’re not touring because they’re losing money.

They’re in just as tough a boat as the venues are,” Mr Crombie said.

Podcast captures the soul of the Hills Local station 3MDR Mountain District Radio has celebrated hitting 40 in a special way this year, with the recent launch of its very own oral history podcast.

The podcast ‘On Air: 40 Years of 3MDR’, along with dual exhibitions at the Burrinja Cultural Centre and the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum, delves into the origin story of the station and the people behind it.

(Supplied) Dr Nat Grant, the station’s manager, said that as an oral historian and podcast producer, they saw a great opportunity to record the station’s history as told by the people who created it.

“With over 100 interviews and many, many excerpts of archival programs and music, the 24-episode-strong podcast is a testament to all who’ve kept 3MDR thriving over the last 40-plus years,” they said.

Reaching back into the station’s vault for precious moments, the founding members and key community members who have been voices for the Dandenongs have been collected together to tell the story of how 3MDR began and evolved since 1983.

The podcast assembly process took 3MDR volunteers nearly two years to complete.

There are also physical exhibitions for 3MDR at both Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey with ‘ON AIR: Local Voices, Loud and Clear’ and Yarra Ranges Regional Museum in Lilydale with ‘ON AIR: Broadcasting Local Legends’ on until 8 March 2026.

‘Respect’ starts here As the busy Christmas season broke out across the hills, three women stood up for gender based violence, creating a mural in Belgrave on ‘Respect’ as part of the UN Women’s 16 Days of Activism.

Bringing a local lens to a global issue, artist, local, and parent Laura said they saw the chance to create a collaborative piece that would bring the issue forward in Belgrave and have been working with fellow Mums, Kate and Cat “It’s a nice project that allows us to have a creative expression and make a statement about gender based violence,” she said.

“We wanted to do something for the 16 days.

We like that. It’s not just one day.”

The mural will be quite personal to Hills residents, and the artists have been inviting community members to share their ideas on what respect means to them – especially in the context of violence against women and girls.

From Cornwall with love

By Tania Phillips Cornwall is considered one of the most remote and yet beautiful counties in England.

And the county’s North Coast with its dramatic cliffscapes, craggy coves, boundless white-tipped breakers and kilometres and kilometres of golden sands is a jewel in the crown, a hikers paradise – beloved by it’s local residents including local fisherman Jeremy Brown, who is more than happy to extoll it’s beauty, heritage and culture.

Part of a five-generation fishing family Jeremy lives in Port Isaac – a quintessential Cornish Fishing village – known for its narrow, winding streets lined with charming, whitewashed cottages that overlook a picturesque harbour – locally referred to as the Platt.

It has gained fame as the fictional village of Port Wenn in the BBC series Doc Martin with many a visitor searching the historic village for the “Grumpy Doc’s” landmarks according to the seasoned fisherman and part-time singer.

However, Jeremy and his fellow members of Fisherman’s Friends – a group of local men who have been taking sea shanty’s to the world through their two successful movies, musicals and their forthcoming first Australian tour – are slowly changing that. Bringing the tourism focus back on the beautiful landscape and vibrant living culture.

Fishing heritage dates back to the early fourteenth century in Port Isaac. It’s a village that has always been deeply connected to the sea, with fishing continuing to play a significant role in the lives of its residents. The village’s name comes from the Cornish Porthysek, meaning ’corn port’, a nod to its historic role in the grain trade.

“People actually do turn up now and look for someone from the Fisherman’s Friends and not just the grumpy old Doc,” Jeremy laughed.

“It’s been a goal of mine in a way – to have some people come to Port Isaac to see the home of Fisherman’s Friends. People have always come to Port Isaac it’s such a pretty place – but then we got a certain amount of the Tourism which was just people looking for the Doc’s House and what have you.

“Even though we’ve got members in from other Ports now – Padstow and Boscastle – it is the home of the Fisherman’s Friends and people do make a beeline for it but of course the village sells itself - it’s so pretty.”

And on Wednesday nights Jeremy, an original member of the group, formed to raise a bit of money for charity back in the 90s, can often be found in the pub singing sea shanties with the rest of the community. The band on stage on those nights is The Yarnigoats who do a lot of the Fisherman’s Friends repertoire as well as their own music. Local gigs are few and far between for the Friends these days.

“Very occasionally about three times this year – on our group WhatsApp chat – we just say is anyone free on Friday and we just do an impromptu gig,” he said.

“But we can’t advertise it these days because

If we advertise it we get 2000 people turn up – paramedics, police and marshals have to come because there’s no parking in the village – it’s all out of the village.

“The old sea shanties are obviously from the days of sail so we’re going back hundreds of years.

“But for some reason they’ve got some sort of resonance with people. When we first started singing we had no ambition other than to raise a few pounds for charity. We started singing in the open air at Port Isaac – it’s a bit of an amphitheatre and it sort of lends itself to it.”

The beauty and setting of the village evokes the past and the fishing culture.

“Everything rolls downhill to the harbour,” Jeremy says.

“It’s a very small harbour and it’s straight into the open ocean from there. You’ve got the North Atlantic right out there and the gales literally come right on through and they sweep up the streets and we have to move all the boats.”

He said visitors invariably always find themselves at the bottom of the village at The Platt – a concreted area where the fishermen (like Jeremy’s son who is one of just a few professional fishermen left in the town) keep their dingy. The Platt is also where Fisherman’s Friends got their start and still pop up from time to time.

“You can get a beer and just sit on the Platt or you can go up to our local pub where some of the filming in our films took place and enjoy the atmosphere and have a sing.”

No need to make rustic backdrops for photos, movies or TV shows in Port Isaac in the breathtaking county of Cornwall in the UK. Jeremy believes the best thing that has come out of the adventure of Fisherman’s Friends is the revival of pub singing – of singing just for the joy of it at your local and of keeping that part of Cornish Culture alive. Of course, the band’s trip to Australia is another bonus – and it helps that it’s in the English winter when work is not so busy.

“Singing has not really taken us around the world because we’ve all still got our regular jobs,” he said.

The group’s first Australian tour starts in Adelaide on 7 January and closes out in Perth on 25 January and takes in all States and the ACT. Tickets on sale head to the fishermans-friends website for more information.

Freemasons give $55,000 The Freemasons of the Monash Gully District, together with the Freemasons Foundation Victoria, have proudly funded the Interchange Outer East Sibling Program since 2009.

The partnership began when Freemason RWBro Keith Thornton arranged an ongoing line of support with then Interchange chief executive officer, Fred Brumhead.

The Sibling Program provides activities and camps that bring together disadvantaged siblings of children with special needs.

Funding supports travel to venues, activity materials, meals, and essential equipment.

Through participation in the program, children develop greater self-confidence, improve their academic outcomes, and build social skills that enable them to contribute positively to their families and the wider community. The program is fully funded by Freemasons.

This year, Freemasons presented a cheque for

$55,240 as part of a renewed three-year commitment to fund the program’s budget.

This latest contribution brings total funding over the past 17 years to $559,580. Funds are raised annually by local Freemasons through a variety of initiatives, including the annual Monash Gully Masters Gala Night.

The cheque presentation was well attended by parents, Interchange Outer East staff and volunteers, Freemasons Foundation Victoria representatives, and members of the Monash Gully District. Speakers at the event included Jacinta Benne (Family Support Programs Coordinator), RWBro Lionel May (Monash Gully District Coordinator), Sandra Jacobs (chief executive officer, Freemasons Foundation Victoria), and RWBro Miles King (Deputy Grand Master).

Eastern Health claim two gongs at state healthcare awards

By Callum Ludwig Two Eastern Health initiatives have been recognised for their efforts in the recent Victorian Public Healthcare Awards.

Eastern Health’s Social Work Team won a Victorian Public Healthcare Award in the category of ‘Celebrating a Strong and Sustainable Workforce’ while the Rahma Health team Director of the Allied Health Workforce Jackie Orwin said the Social Work service, working across five of the Eastern Health hospitals, won the award for their work in ‘Boosting Social Work via AHA (Allied Health Assistant) Roles in RACS (Residential Aged Care Services)/TCP (Transition Care Program) Pathways’.

“The Social Work teams were delighted and proud to win the award in recognition of their efforts to improve outcomes for patients, Eastern Health Social Work teams are committed to delivering high quality care and this Award validated their hard work and innovation,” she said.

“Eastern Health Social Workers are a qualified and credentialled workforce that focus on understanding patients in their social and community contexts, with the view to maximising the support available to them to promote the best possible health and wellbeing outcomes.

“The Social Work Allied Health Assistant workforce was introduced to further enhance these health and wellbeing outcomes for patients.”

The AHA roles were established due to high turnover and long patient stays in the RACS/TCP pathway and by late 2024, staff turnover had been cut by 29 per cent, referral response improved by 60 per cent, discharge times reduced by 25 per cent and had freed up 5440 hospital beds.

Ms Orwin said the awarded work was a targeted Social Work Allied Health Assistant workforce and model of care reform initiative.

“It focused on inpatient teams supporting older adults awaiting permanent Residential Aged Care (RACS) placement, the initiative demonstrated improvements in patient care, staff experience, as well as system efficiency,” she said.

“The Eastern Health Social Work leadership team continues to explore how a Social Work Allied Health Assistant workforce may improve patient care pertaining to other social issues. “Furthermore, we are looking in to how we can share the new knowledge and learnings with other social work services.”

The Rahma Health team won an award for ‘Excellence in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion’, for their work on ‘A Blueprint for Community-led Multicultural Health Resources, starting with the Arabic-speaking community’.

The Rahma Health team was founded at Eastern Health and works with 20 partners, codesigning community-led multicultural health resources, aiming to help improve healthcare for refugee and migrant families across Victoria.

New Year note from fire chief Happy New Year, Victoria. I hope your 2026 is one full of hope, happiness and good health.

Personally? I am thrilled by a summer that has not yet delivered the harsh conditions we might have anticipated; that we have remained largely unscathed by the threat of bushfires; and that our people have had some chance for downtime as we reset for another busy year.

But I am also cautious about what might lie ahead and want to urge caution and continued vigilance in these ‘lazy, hazy, crazy’ days – these latter months of summer.

How you can prepare: Bushfire management is a shared responsibility.

It is one we (FFMVic) share with other agencies (such as CFA), but it is also one we share with you.

There are some simple steps you can take to help reduce your risk from bushfire.

How we are prepared Of course, I want you to know we are prepared too; that FFMVic works year-round to ensure we are well positioned to protect communities, assets and the environment from the threat of bushfire.

We have more than 1800 personnel on the frontline, including year-round and seasonal firefighters, fire lookout observers and support officers, together with hundreds of emergency and incident management staff, firefighting equipment (including hundreds of ultralight and heavy tankers, and more than 1000 additional plant and trucks, including dozers, tractors, graders, loaders, forklifts and excavators); as well as support from the state’s aerial firefighting fleet, comprising a mix of firebombing aircraft, air supervision

and information-gathering aircraft.

Our program of bushfire risk reduction includes planned burns, mowing, mulching, slashing and spraying – ‘fuel management’. Fuel management reduces the amount of vegetation (e.g. grass, leaves, bark, shrubs and small fallen branches) available to ‘fuel’ a fire, thereby reducing the likely speed or intensity of a bushfire.

These qualities can help fire crews to respond to and put out fires while they are still small – before they can impact on communities, assets, infrastructure and the environment.

But fuel management is not our whole program to reduce risk. We work closely with our emergency sector partners to reduce risk in many ways. From preventing new ignitions through fire bans and campfire controls, early detection of bushfires from fire towers and aircraft, to aggressive first attack using aircraft and ground crews and emergency warning and information systems.

Spruced up Kalorama Park now accessible to all An iconic long term art and nature project has reached another milestone, with Regeneration - The Listening Place waiting to be discovered in Kalorama Park. along with new access now available as part of the ngurrak barring | RidgeWalk project for the Yarra Ranges.

The striking, site-responsive land artwork Regeneration - The Listening Place, can now be accessed in Kalorama Park.

Member for Monbulk, Daniela De Martino MP said that ngurrak barring was an important investment into the community.

“This project is about creating spaces that are not only beautiful but inclusive and accessible for everyone,” she said.

“Regeneration - The Listening Place is a wonderful example of how art, nature, and community can come together to enrich our region. I’m proud to see investments like ngurrak barring making a real difference for locals and visitors alike, encouraging connection with both our environment and our cultural heritage,” said Ms. De Martino.

The rejuvenated space is designed to integrate with the wider parkland, with the sculptural elements made of natural materials, designed pathways and revegetation with native species.

Part of the wider ngurrak barring | RidgeWalk project, the site features a DDA compliant pathway, and the popular destination is thus accessible to a wider range of community members and visitors. While currently their is fencing at the top of the site that has been removed, the bottom half of the site will stay fenced while the plantings are fully established.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Richard Higgins, said that the Yarra Ranges Council is grateful to the many community members who helped influence this revitalised space, particularly members of Council’s Disability Advisory Committee, the Friends of Kalorama Park group, and local businesses.

“In a region known for its beautiful but challenging natural environment, creating more accessible areas for more people to enjoy contributes to our vision for the Yarra Ranges to be an accessible, fair, and inclusive municipality, where people with a disability and their carers can participate in community life as equal citizens,” Cr Higgins said.

“We’re grateful for the dedication and enthusiasm so many community members have for this iconic site. We recognise that this is a significant change and believe this work will encourage a deeper interaction with this site.

It’s a place that has inspired so many artists and designers, including William Barak, Arthur Streeton, and Edna Walling, and continues to inspire today - you only have to look at the local businesses in Kalorama to see what a thriving, creative community this is,” said Cr Higgins.

The work, by TARRMAC Studios and FOOKS Landscape Architecture, is described as Land Art, or “art that is made directly in the landscape, sculpting the land itself into earthworks or making structures in the landscape using

natural materials.” (Utah Museum of Fine Arts) ngurrak barring comprises 39 kilometres ms of interconnected walking trails exploring the long and continuing inspiration that artists, designers, creatives, and activists have found in the Dandenong Ranges.

Fourteen kilometres of trails connecting villages through the Dandenong Ranges have been upgraded, and improved pedestrian crossings have been introduced at key sections along the trails.

Nine permanent artworks have been installed, along with a series of signage telling further stories of the area’s creative and cultural history.

The project is jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments, and Yarra Ranges Council and works continue on the final elements of the project, with the official launch planned for April next year.

The third film in the Avatar franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash is another serviceable, visually stunning sci-fi action movie in a franchise running low on ideas.

On the alien world of Pandora, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his Na’vi family grapple with mounting human imperialism and the warlike Mangkwan clan.

Beyond the staggeringly beautiful, immersive visuals, grand score and soaring action sequences – James Cameron is still a tremendous technical director – the best parts of this alien adventure are human, more-orless. Spider (Jack Champion), a plucky human boy born on Pandora, is a headstrong but deeply likeable character who is loyal to the Na’vi but feels increasingly outcast. Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang), who was resurrected in an engineered Na’vi body in the previous film, is still a fun swaggering zealot but has far more nuance this time, as he tries to be a better father for Spider and forms a relationship with Varang (Oona Chaplin), the fierce Mangkwan leader. Quaritch still serves the human occupying force, so it’s intriguing to watch him integrate more with the natives after meeting one as unhinged and nasty as he is (and some people online jokingly compare Quaritch to real white supremacists who paradoxically have nonwhite partners).

Like the other Avatar films, most of Fire and Ash’s characters are underdeveloped, Jake Sully is a bland hero and the conflicts carry little weight or lasting peril. For example, Jake’s wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) develops an understandable hatred of humanity after the death of her son in the second film, and she rejects Spider as a result, but we know she won’t do anything to him because Varang already fills the “Evil Neytiri” role in the plot. The long (just over three hours) but undernourished narrative suffers from being a middle instalment, retreading many of the same plot and action beats from the first two films (including a tired subplot about whale pacifism) and setting up further sequels without accomplishing much on its own. Some people still argue that the Avatar franchise has no cultural relevance, but they’re mistaken. The fact that each Avatar film rakes in over a billion dollars globally, helping to keep cinemas alive in the process, is cultural relevance. The fact that we still discuss Avatar in terms of visually beautiful but thinly-written epics, or as Ferngully in space or Dances With Wolves with nine-foot Smurfs, is cultural relevance, for better and worse. The recurring question of whether Avatar has any cultural relevance, ironically, is relevance.

Each Avatar film has, broadly speaking, focused on a different classical element.

The first film followed an air-themed Na’vi tribe, The Way of Water featured a M?oriinspired water tribe and Fire and Ash features a volcano-dwelling fire-themed tribe.

James Cameron has planned two more Avatar films, and I predict the fourth Avatar film will feature an earth-themed Na’vi tribe to complete the classical elements. By the way, while the Avatar franchise is Cameron’s baby, it would be nice if Cameron brought new directors into his universe, like how other filmmakers took on the Terminator franchise after him, or how Cameron himself followed Ridley Scott’s Alien with the amazing Aliens. Featuring a great antagonist in Quaritch but otherwise too similar to its predecessors, Avatar: Fire and Ash is another landmark special effects extravaganza and a resplendent thrill-ride that isn’t as deep as it thinks it is, and is playing in most Victorian cinemas.

Bamford drafted to Pies

By Tanya Steele High-decibel celebrations echoes through the loungeroom of Josephine Bamford on 15 December last year when the young footballer was drafted by the Magpies to the ALFW. “The moment Josie found out! Pick #29 of the 2025 AFLW National Draft to the Collingwood Football Club!” read the caption of the high octane moment shared by the senior division of the Ferntree Gully Eagles Football & Netball Club.

“Ruck and roll, Welcome to Collingwood, Josephine Bamford!” read Collingwood’s ALFW social media.

“The Eastern Ranges Ruck joins our Club with Pick 29 after a huge 2025 that saw her selected in both the All-Australian Team and Talent League Team of the Year.”

AFL Talent Ambassador Kevin Sheehan had listed Josie amongst his top 30 prospects for the 2025 Telstra AFLW Draft, including ten teen footballers from Victoria earlier in December, along with Wantirna South midfielder Tayla McMillan who was selected with pick number 34 and will don the blue jersey for Carlton, achieving a childhood dream.

Bamford will bring her height, speed, overhead marking and mobility into the New Year, with Sheehan comparing her to players like Matilda Scholz from Port Adelaide.

“A ruck/forward who is extremely mobile and very competitive by nature, Bamford is also a decisive decision-maker who uses the ball effectively,” he wrote.

Bamford’s football journey began in Bayswater in 2017, according to profiles shared on Rookie ME Central. She began playing with the Ferntree Gully Eagles in the Eastern Football Netball League (EFNL) in 2021.

Among six selected by the Pies, Bamford played with the Eastern Rangers, averaging 15.5 disposals, 23 hit outs and totalled 10 goals.

She was also in the 2025 Marsh AFL National Championships All-Australian Team and the Talent League Team of the Year.

Executive General Manager of Women’s Football Jess Burger said in a press release on 15 December that the Club was thrilled to welcome the recruits to Collingwood.

Growth strong in community football, figures show Football participation across Victoria continued to grow in 2025 surpassing 250,000 registered participants to mark an all-time record for the state.

Victorians accounted for more than 40 percent of all football participants nation-wide in 2025, up six percent on last year, with the national total reaching a record 625,000 participants.

Touted as the ‘older sibling’ of NAB AFL Auskick, participation in NAB AFL Superkick grew by 170 percent in Victoria, hitting a new record of 10,000 participants in the program’s second year.

Modified footy offering - AFL Nines - continued to grow in popularity, with a 27-percent increase in registered participants.

AFL Nines has been designed to fit into everyday life, with the nine-a-side, no tackling format accessible to people of all ages and skill levels.

Growth in community football across both country Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne remains steady, with more than 183,000 Victorians registered with a local club from junior and youth through to senior level.

Primary and high school students are continuing to engage more with Aussie Rules football, assisted by AFL Victoria’s partnership with School Sport Victoria (SSV), with 57 percent growth in 2025.

An extension to the partnership with SSV for a further two years was announced in August.

Women and girls’ participation continued to grow, up four percent across community football, whilst one in five NAB AFL Auskick and Superkick participants were girls in 2025.

Executive General Manager of Game Development, Rob Auld, said the record numbers reflect both the strength of the game and the deepening connection Australians continue to build with footy.

“As more Australians find their pathway into the game, our focus remains on making sure footy is welcoming, inclusive and accessible as we strive to have one million participants by 2033.

“Encouraging people to find their way to play - whether it’s through NAB AFL Auskick, NAB AFL Superkick, community football or AFL Nines – sits at the heart of that vision, driven by the 10 percent enshrined investment into Game Development that supports programs and participation across all levels of the game.

“To sustain the game for generations to come, we need a strong foundation.

“These results are driven by the thousands of people who give their time, energy and passion to footy every week.

Good sports all in 2025

By Shamsiya Hussainpoor One of 2025’s most inspiring stories of community spirit and personal determination came from Boronia resident Dr Prabodh Malhotra, who completed his third consecutive long-distance walk in support of the McGrath Foundation. Over two months, Dr Malhotra walked from the Melbourne Cricket Ground to the Sydney Cricket Ground, covering thousands of kilometres to raise awareness and funds for cancer support. Beginning on 3 November 2024 and finishing on 3 January 2025, the journey tested him both physically and mentally, with challenging terrain including the Gippsland coast, Clyde Mountain, and the busy roads surrounding Canberra. In the final stages, his son joined him, driving the support van and providing vital assistance. Having lived in Boronia since 1989, Dr Malhotra described the walk as his way of giving back to the community that had welcomed him after retiring from academia. Over three years of these walks, he has raised more than $123,000 for the McGrath Foundation, with donations still coming in. Along the route, he met people whose stories reinforced the importance of the cause, including a breast cancer survivor who shared how a McGrath nurse had provided her with care and support. Dr Malhotra described the journey as as much a mental challenge as a physical one, and while he is unsure if he will attempt the walk again, his 2025 effort stands as a testament to perseverance, generosity, and community spirit.

In July, Monbulk netballer Jorja Wragg stunned the local sporting community by breaking the Outer East record for most goals scored in a single game, sinking an incredible 106 goals in a B-Grade clash against Healesville. Her effort helped Monbulk to a dominant 115–5 victory, surpassing the previous record of 91 set in 2017. Ms Wragg, who started playing netball at Monbulk as a nine-year-old, credited her teammates and coach Christina Puopolo, highlighting that disciplined team play made the record possible. Despite the record-breaking tally, she also praised the young Healesville side for their resilience, showing humility and sportsmanship.

Belgrave South cafe owner Rebecca “Bek” Hamer demonstrated extraordinary courage and resilience in 2025 when she completed the Buffalo Stampede Marathon in Bright just two weeks after collapsing unexpectedly at her cafe. The mother of four temporarily lost all movement in her arms and legs, prompting a hospital visit, with a tick bite later suspected as the cause. Despite this scare, Ms Hamer ran the marathon, pacing herself and focusing on simply crossing the finish line. Her children also joined the event, with seven-year-old Phoenix finishing third in the 2 kilometre race. Ms Hamer said the experience gave her a renewed appreciation for health, family, and the strength of community support.

Monbulk Football Netball Club celebrated a landmark year, sending three netball teams to the Grand Finals at Healesville, a feat last achieved in 2006. The B-Grade team claimed the premiership with a 61 to 48 win over ROC, with Jorja Wragg contributing 53 goals and Olivia Crook adding eight. D-Grade also triumphed 27 to 23 against Mt. Evelyn, while the Under 15s Gold team fought hard but fell 31–20. The season doubled Monbulk’s netball premiership tally and marked a fitting end to Grant Dennison’s seven-year tenure as club president.

In cricket, the Ferntree Gully community mourned the tragic loss of 17-year-old Ben “BA” Austin, a gifted cricketer, football fan, and boundary umpire. In his first year as a VAFA boundary umpire, he officiated the Premier Men’s Reserves Grand Final, an honour that reflected his skill and maturity. Knox Kyokushin Karate instructor Keelan Lang also made headlines in 2025, earning the honour of representing Australia at the sixth World Kyokushin Karate Tournament in Maebashi, Japan.

Selected for his skill and dedication, Mr Lang described the experience as a mix of disbelief, excitement, and nerves. Crucial wins, tough losses After an inconsistent month of weather, all cricketers took the field for the second last weekend of cricket for 2025, with the Mt Evelyn Cricket Club recording a mixed bag of results.

After a miserable effort against Warranwood last round, the pressure had been heaped upon the Community Bank - Mt Evelyn First XI to make a dramatic turnaround to straighten up their season and fend off relegation. Their first task in redemption is a pair of one-day clashes at home against Vermont and Heatherdale, leading into the Christmas break. Lose both, and relegation is inevitable. Win both, and salvation is possible.

In Round One, the Mounters were desperately close to claiming the win on the road to Vermont, so confidence was high that with a strong showing with both bat and ball that win would be forthcoming. Taking positive action, captain Campbell Mole elected to bat upon winning the toss. Early on, it looked like the Mt Evelyn top order was feeling the effects of some inconsistent form. The top four batters would make useful contributions, but their cautious approach and some disciplined bowling saw the score stalled at 4/103 after 27 overs. A long way off a defendable total. 200 is barely enough at Gary Martin Oval.

Mole, sensing the urgency of the situation, clicked the batting up a few gears. Mole would blister an impressive 79 off 48 with six fours and five sixes, highlighting his innings. His contribution with the middle order ensured the hosts would pass 200 and set a chase of 211 for the Eagles to secure victory. By no means an unattainable total, but one that would take some chasing.

The Mounters would make the ideal start, claiming two early wickets to inject enthusiasm in their fielding efforts, but Vermont would have other ideas. A well-constructed century partnership for the third wicket, and with the run rate rising, the Mounters would do well to hold out the visitors. With the score at 3/162 in the 32nd over, it was Vermont’s game to lose.

Bohdie Jones would take the crucial wicket of Ethan Walker, and the batters would tighten up.

Darcy Fraser, in his recall to the First XI, would turn match-winner, taking four late wickets to cut a swathe through Vermont’s tail. The Mounters’ composure would prove critical in a critical win for the team. When the dust settled, the visitors would be bowled out for 191, 20 runs short of victory.

Despite the victory adding some relief to the First XI’s cause, they would be fully aware that the wins need to keep on coming, and victory against Heatherdale becomes a must. This was unfortunately not the case, with Heatherdale finishing the day on 7/181, 40 runs ahead of the Mounters, who were all out for 141.

The Professionals Outer East Second XI travelled to Wandin for a much anticipated top of the table clash against the Bulldogs. Wandin would ask their visitors to bat first, and early on, it looked to be the right call as the Bulldogs would capture vital early wickets. Adam Smith and Alex Brisbane-Flynn, bitten by their demotion from the First XI would rectify the situation and add

Smith would be unrelenting on the Bulldog’s attack with a series of crisp boundaries, highlighting an excellent innings of 72 off just 66 balls.

Unfortunately for the visitors, Smith had become the main source of the runs, and his wicket with the score on 103 would have a two-fold effect.

Wickets would fall with regularity and the run rate would slow throughout the middle overs.

Brad Jones (37 not out) and captain Joey Chamberlin (27 not out) would ensure that Smith’s efforts would not go unrewarded as they would put together a run-a-ball 40-run partnership to push the score to a respectable 7/208.

The visitors would soon find out that the score was somewhat under par as the Bulldogs’ openers would put them to the sword. When the first wicket fell, the game was all but over as the hosts raced to 1/134 inside 17 overs. A total obliteration.

The start allowed the host to cruise to the total inside 30 overs with the loss of just three wickets.

The loss is a dent in the Second XI’s progress and a timely reminder that the competition will be a tough one to conquer this season. Yarra Glen will be their final challenge of the year in what now becomes a must-win clash. A win will have them firmly entrenched in the top four, whilst a loss will give those sniffing around the fringes the impetus they will need heading into the new year.

Yarra Glen was just able to outscore the Mounters by a single run to win the last match of 2025. The final score was Yarra Glen 7/198 to Mt Evelyn’s 8/197.

The Rhead Group Third XI had a game they’d rather forget as they were totally outclassed by a slick Warrandyte outfit. Batting first, the Bloods were on the front foot from the outset and took a liking to everything the Mounters could throw at them. The visitors would amass a massive total of 8/289 off their allotted overs at a sprightly eight an over. Captain Graeme Foster would be the pick of the bowlers, taking 3/59, while Alex Whiting was useful with figures of 2/34.

The Mounters bats were totally outclassed in their response to the big total. Darren Westaway (37) and Caleb Doyle (15) would be the only bat-

ters to reach double figures as they were wiped off the park by a dominant Warrandyte team. 116 was all they could muster as they were bowled out in the 24th over.

The loss is a big indicator to the team as to how far they need to improve to bridge the gap on the top couple of teams if they are to challenge for the title. Their immediate challenge is the thirdplaced Coldstream next week at Coldstream. Mt Evelyn was able to get the better of Coldstream for the final round of 2025, finishing up the day on 10/197.

The Hop Hen Fourth XI completed an excellent month of cricket as they eclipsed fellow finals aspirants Ainslie Park in a close encounter at Gracedale Park.

Ainslie would open the contest with the bat and the innings would turn out to be an oldfashioned arm wrestle as neither team could gain ascendancy. Most Ainslie bats would make some sort of contribution, ensuring the scoreboard would tick over, but the Mt Evelyn bowlers would keep it tight, and regular wickets would keep things in check. Eventually, the innings would be closed with the score on 8/151. Craig Steele would be the pick of the bowlers, taking 4/5 over the closing overs to reduce the anticipated total.

Mt Evelyn’s innings would start disastrously as star batsman Lachie Robertson and Jarrod Hartman would be back in the sheds before the score had reached double figures. This left Campbell Manser (38) and Steele (25) the task of cautiously advancing their team into the contest. With the required run rate comfortably attainable, they would nurse the team to the drinks break with little fuss or fanfare.

The wickets of Manser and Steele would give the hosts some hope as they would start to strangle their opposition, but the young pairing of Jake Rigg (29 not out) and Chase Missen (25 not out) would calmly steer the Mounters to victory with an excellent partnership where it could’ve gone pear-shaped for the visitors.

The Fourth XI are now within reach of the top rungs of the ladder, and a victory against Montrose in the final round of the year will have them

well situated for a crack in the second half of the season. The Mounters got the win 10/193.

The Lilydale Tyres Fifth XI hosted Croydon North, and it was the visiting Knights who would put on a clinic against the hapless Mounters. The contest was all but over after the first innings as the visitors would put together a monstrous total of 3/351 on the board. A brutal attack on the small surroundings of the postage stamp. No bowlers were spared as they raced along at nearly 10 an over.

The chase was always going to be a major task to complete, and when you quickly fall to 7/42, you’re cooked. Experienced pairing of Craig Kenins (85) and Leighton Joyce (42), along with a quick-fire unbeaten 31 from young gun Harry Dunstone, would give the score some respectability as the host would stumble to 9/217.

The Fifths have had a more than respectable start to the season, but the big boys of the competition have bullied them. They will look to finish the year in style as they host Wonga Park in a game that will have a big bearing on finals positions. This final match was abandoned, but Mt Evelyn was looking good, with the score recorded at 8/202 to Wonga Park’s 8/169.

The Flowtec Sixth XI continued their run of unrewarded efforts as they were ‘close, but no cigar’ once again. Travelling to Ainslie Park, the Mounters would bat first and would put together a well-constructed innings. Jacdan Mikaelian and Chris Anderson would be cautious up front against some excellent bowling, but the fact that they kept their wickets intact opened the innings up for the Mt Evelyn middle order.

Father-son duo of Luke James (19) and Shane Cantelmi (22) would increase the run rate with a flurry, with Craig Carstens (40) adding the cream to the top to extend the final total to 6/171, a more than respectable total.

The game would turn into a classic as the Mt Evelyn bowlers would stick to their task diligently, whilst the Ainslie bats would keep the run rate in check. Jamie Lee-Archer would do his best to get the Mounters off to a good start, taking 2/9, but wickets would be hard to come by through the middle overs. With the score at 2/106 at the drinks break, it looked as though the Mounters would fall short again.

Tight spells from Elisha Whitelaw, Anderson, James and Merg Mikaelian would give the Mounters a glimmer of hope and when Whitelaw and Anderson would capture three wickets in their return to the bowling crease, it was suddenly game on. Sensing the game was slipping from their grasp, some urgency was required by the Ainslie bats. With some quick running between wickets, the hosts were able to snatch victory with just three balls to spare. A classic match between two evenly matched teams. Whitelaw would have his best outing with the ball, taking 3/19, while Anderson would support him with 2/16.

That does it for the Sixth XI for 2025. Hopefully, they can turn their good form into wins in the new year.
