The numbers of fatal overdoses in Pakenham have doubled, new research has discovered. It warns against the "hidden epidemic" that is the rise of deadly pharmaceutical drugs such as sleeping tablets, anxiety tablets, and painkillers. In a five year period ending in 2016, 28 people died from a drug-related death in the Pakenham area, according to research by the Penington Institute. This is double from 14 deaths a decade earlier. "The number of drug-related deaths in this part of the outer east bordering west Gippsland is trending upwards and that is a major concern," Penington Institute CEO John Ryan said. "An increase of 14 deaths in the years spanning 2012 to 2016 compared to 2002 to 2006 should act as a strong wakeup call." The biggest killer drugs in the region were opioids, such as codeine, heroin, oxycodone and fentanyl. Nation-wide, deaths involving sleeping and anxiety tablets, also known as 'Benzos' or benzodiazepines, are on the rise. In 2012-16, there were 2177 Benzo-related deaths across Australia. Amphetamines including the drug 'ice' rose to being the third most common substance in overdose deaths (1237 in 2012-16), overtaking alcohol. Dr Matthew Frei, clinical director at Eastern Health's Turning Point drug-and-alcohol
treatment service, said Benzos and painkillers were widely prescribed. "Having pain or stress or not being able to sleep requires a more complicated response than a pill. "They're widely prescribed by doctors because they are the main medical treatment for common conditions such as anxiety and insomnia and chronic pain. "Doctors are getting more educated and getting more conscious ... I do think we need to change our views on what is the answer to these common problems." Patients also needed to rethink their expectations about getting a quick, prescription fix, he said. "What makes them an issue is they're basically sedating drugs." For example, chronic pain or anxiety could be addressed by changed lifestyle, diet and activity, physiotherapy and psychology. "Though it's not as immediate as taking a tablet, we know they work. And they don't carry the risks that these tablets will carry." The Penington Institute is calling for the Federal Government to review of the soaring prescription levels for the painkiller, fentanyl, and to substantially increase drug treatment. Mr Ryan noted that drug use was a health issue more than a law issue, due to most overdoses involving pharmaceuticals. "We need more education. "We desperately need more support for families."

Hampton Park's young snowboarder Leonidas Tieu represented his school, St Kevin's Primary School at the Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships held at Mt Buller on 22 August. Leo won Gold in the Giant Slalom. On 12 August with Golds in both Pro Slalom and Giant Slalom, Leo was the overall winner of the 2018 Division 5 Land Rover King of The Mountain series held at Mt Buller. "We are enormously proud of Leo's achievements in his chosen sport and love of snowboarding," St Kevin's Primary School principal Anni Miers said. "We try to ensure that all students have opportunities to pursue their interests by providing a wide range of sporting initiatives in our curriculum both individual and team based. "The last few years snowboarding has given him an outlet in what was an extremely tough time in his young life due to family issues." As a full time single father, Mr Tieu has done all he can do as far as getting Leo to the snow most weekends. "Financially we were never in a position to do lessons or any type of squad training so Leo resorted to hundreds of hours of YouTube snowboarding tutorials," Mr Tieu said. By Rowan Forster Bad Bets Australia has upped the ante in its war on a proposal for 80 poker machines in Officer, plastering a headshot of applicant Timothy Rice on a billboard beside the Princes Highway. It will be the last campaign for the prolific and provocative anti-gambling group, which has since fallen on financial hardship. “Bad Bets Australia has finite funding and sadly our funding is coming to an end, but we are staying until the end of this campaign,” BBAs Rohan Wenn said. In the organisation’s latest controversial move, a large photograph of Mr Rice will be erected with a caption: “This man wants 80 poker machines in Officer - find out more about him.” The sign is promoting a public meeting, scheduled for 25 September. Mr Wenn said the motivation behind BBAs latest move was accountability. “For a long time, nobody ever knew who was behind these proposals,” he said. “The public has a right to know who is trying to bring pokies to their town. “This is about accountability - if you want to put 80 machines in a town you need to put your face to it.” Cardinia Shire ordered the group’s last controversial sign be taken down due to concerns regarding its close proximity to schools. The sign read: “Will you be bashed, will you be robbed, will you take your own life?” The new billboard, featuring Mr Rice, has been placed at the same site - on the corner of the Princes Highway and Tivendale Road. Mr Rice was contacted, but declined to comment.

Plans for a church to be built in a semi-rural court in Narre Warren South have been approved despite residents saying they've been "hung out to dry." At their Planning Committee Meeting on Tuesday 14 August, Casey Councillors voted to issue a planning permit for an orthodox church to be developed at Bartok Court. The plans from St. Mary's Syrian Orthodox Community Centre Inc propose to operate the church seven days a week. It's also proposed if Bartok Court becomes connected to the road network vehicle access to the site would be from Bartok Court with vehicle access from Pound Road ceasing. Proponent Cr Sam Aziz said the proposed church development would "See many people consider moving to the City of Casey; it will see people now thinking about moving businesses or starting new business operations in the City of Casey." He said said the church community had been "very responsible in working cooperatively with council" in producing amended plans. This included removing a caretaker building and a hall at the rear of the site. "This reduces the site coverage and footprint and provides more opportunity for landscaping in line with the amenity of the area in which the development is proposed," he said. In regards to road access, Cr Aziz said: "We don't believe VicRoads will act on this for at least a decade." Des Yapp and his wife Marie who have lived at Bartok Court for over 20 years fear they will lose their privacy with more cars right driving "next to our bedroom window." In my working life I did my workshops every year around Responding to Abuse and Neglect, it must be done by everyone who works with children, I understand this. We are then mandated to report any sign of child abuse to authorities. Okay, so let’s talk about the documented abuse that is happening on Australia’s offshore island open air prisons. After watching 7.30 on 27th August, there can be no questioning this and no rhetorical responses will make it go away. There can never be any justification for detention and harm to children seeking asylum. This secret cannot be kept any longer, the word is out and everyone knows what is going on. Tooradin Primary School celebrated the importance of positive male role models in each of their children's life. Students invited a special friend to the Father's Day Breakfast to spend some time in their school environment - dads, grandparents, uncles, brothers, neighbours, and of course mums were invited too. One of the schools Parents and Friends Association (PFA) members had a catering background and put her hand up to start the exciting Father's Day Breakfast. "We have huge support from our parents and local community members who jumped in to assist with making this occasion such a success," PFA president Mandy Skewes said. "Many activities were organised during the morning for children and adults to enjoy." Activities included making a card, who is your superhero game, kick the footy, dad themed music, relaxing seating and chalk drawing challenge all while eating a delicious egg and bacon roll and hash browns. This breakfast was followed by a Father's Day Stall for the students which the PFA have worked very hard in thinking outside the square for the students would want to purchase for their special person. By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 14 year old boy has faced a children’s court over an alleged seven-week crime spree of stealing five Nissan Pulsars as well as unlicensed, dangerous and reckless driving in Melbourne’s South-East. The boy was arrested on 27 August and faced court the same day. He was charged with stealing a 1998 Pulsar vehicle in Cranbourne on 10 August, and stealing a 2000 Pulsar and being equipped with scissors for the theft at Cranbourne on 13 August. On the same day, he allegedly drove unlicensed on High Street, Cranbourne, and failed
to stop after being involved in a crash. On 14 August, he allegedly stole a 1999 Pulsar at Narre Warren South, drove unlicensed at Amhurst Drive, evaded police, and drove in a dangerous manner. One charge alleges he engaged in reckless conduct that day by driving at high speed before losing control and striking a gutter, causing damage to the car. He placed his “associate” front passenger at risk of death, police alleged. The boy was also charged with stealing a 1999 Pulsar at Narre Warren on 23 August, and a 1998 Pulsar at Narre Warren two days later. He was also accused of robbing a victim of
MTG cards and a Myki card, recklessly causing injury, assault and assault in the company of others in Cranbourne on 2 July. On 27 August, a children’s court magistrate told the boy the accusations were “very serious”. “Think about what is happening here and why you’re in this situation,” the judge said. He was told by the magistrate to look at his “defiant” attitude, the kids he hung out with and his decisions that put himself and others at risk. The boy was remanded in custody to appear at a children’s court on 31 August.
City of Casey has been successful in its application for a grant to assist with its Family Violence Prevention Program. The Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence, Natalie Hutchins visited Bunjil Place on Thursday 16 August where she announced $80,000 in funding towards the council program. Casey recently launched its Family Violence Prevention Strategy as part of its effort to ensure Casey is a city where people feel safe in their homes, neighbourhoods, public spaces and on all modes of transport. Launched in July, it contains a four-year strategic plan, which identifies family violence as a significant safety issue within the municipality. Sixteen rising sporting talents have been rewarded for their achievements by receiving Federal Government Local Sporting Champions grants. Berwick burglary Casey Crime Investigation Unit is investigating a burglary that occurred at a retail store in Berwick on 21 August.
At approximately 7:30pm on Wednesday, 29 August members from Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol intercepted a Renault van after it was detected travelling at 75km/h in a 60 zone. The driver, a 41 year old man, was required to undergo a breath test which returned a positive result. The subsequent evidentiary breath saw the driver return a result of 0.054. As the driver had a previous drink driving conviction he was served a section 51 and his licence immediately suspended. The driver will be required to attend court in the near future in relation to charges of drink driving and exceeding the speed limit.
Police allege that at approximately 3:30am two unknown offenders have attended the O'Shea Road business in a white van, forced the front door open and stole property and money. Police have released CCTV images in the hopes that someone may have some information about the incident or recognise the people in the images. A speeding driver intercepted in Officer was caught out with weapons and drugs in his vehicle on Saturday, 2 September. Pakenham police spotted the Volkswagen Golf allegedly travelling at more than 150km/h along the Princes Highway just after midnight. The car was intercepted, with police locating a firearm, conducted energy device and ammunition. Quantities of amphetamine and cannabis were also seized. A 26 year old man from Hampton Park was arrested at the scene. He has been charged with prohibited person possess firearm and other weapon and drugrelated offences, and was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 1 November.

City of Casey deputy mayor Amanda Stapledon was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship by the Rotary Club of Berwick on Wednesday, 29 August. The award is named after the founder of Rotary, Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who started Rotary International with three business associates in 1905. "At no time did I imagine I would be the recipient of such a prestigious award but am truly overwhelmed and honoured," she said. "Two special people were invited as special guests; Janet Halsall and Roger Lord have been huge influences in my life and I was thrilled that they were present." St John of God was presented a cheque for $10,000 and guests saw presentations of the Student Program that studies Federal Politics, in Canberra and the club's amazing work over in Balibo, East Timor.

Maria’s passion shines By Rebecca Skilton “Choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.“ Those are the wise words that CEO, creative director and lead designer of Fountain Gate’s Artelia Jewellery, Maria Ulas, is living by. But as the now businesswoman and jewellery designer explained, her life wasn’t always so, with a number of “trials and errors” leading to her dream career. “I did biomedical science at university and majored in microbiology and I was actually working at Monash Medical Centre but it was very hard-hitting,” Maria said. “I studied for five years before I realised, ‘oh my god, I’m just going to shrivel up if I stay here ... this isn’t me’.“ Having always considered her drawing and creativity “just a hobby“, Maria never considered her passion as a career path - until she met her husband, Robert. “(Robert) kept saying to me ‘you’re so creative’ and I would say; ‘no, I’m not...I’m supposed to be a doctor or a scientist, I’m not creative’,” Maria said. “He’s a master jeweller and it wasn’t until he went to Italy and brought back some enamel (that I considered it as a job). He literally came home and said; ‘design me a range, just try it. Just give it a go and see what happens’. So I did. “I designed this range and we took it to the Sydney Trade Show and it went absolutely crazy. It was overwhelming; the factory couldn’t keep up with the demand to get these pieces out. “It was that moment where I said, ‘okay, I see what you’re saying, let’s do this’. So I thought, something’s calling me and I really need to do this,” Maria said. ‘This’ would become Artelia, which opened on 28 May 2017. Alongside her team, Maria offers “the finest diamonds, pearls and precious stones,” and considers the Artelia team to be the wedding and engagement ring specialists. Maria prides herself on the store’s bespoke approach and the fact that all pieces are designed and created in-house by herself and Artelia master jewellers. “(In the beginning) a lot of people would

All it is is mindset. If there’s something they want to do or a business they want to go for or achieve, just go for it.”

Finalists line up for a win The finalists for the 2018 Casey Cardinia Business Awards have been revealed, with 26 local businesses in the running across the 10 categories for the region’s flagship awards program. The awards are a partnership between the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire Council, held each year to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements and contribution of businesses and organisations across the region. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett congratulated the finalists at a special function held at the Cranbourne Golf Club on Friday 31 August. “Through our regional partnership, Casey and Cardinia coordinate a range of programs and events that support our local business community, encourage professional development and foster shared learning,“ Mr Ablett said. “Importantly these programs, including the CCBA, shine a light on the many successful businesses operating across the region. “The CCBA give recognition to those who are excelling in their fields, celebrate local business success stories and provide another platform to come together and strengthen the economic viability of the region. “Our local businesses provide invaluable local job opportunities for residents and expand the horizon for job seekers.“ Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Collin Ross said the judges had a tough task in selecting the finalists. “This year there were more than 80 applications received and it was pleasing to see that many applications submitted were by businesses connecting with the program for the first time,” Cr Ross said. “The judges were impressed with the calibre of entries which reflects the diverse, thriving and quality business community that exists in this region - something we’re incredibly proud to be able to celebrate through this awards program each year.” All finalists are also in the running for the coveted Casey Cardinia Business of the Year award, an award Cr Ross said created a fantastic morale boost for the winner. “If you are Business of the Year people get very excited. I remember a couple of years ago at Cranbourne there was a whole group sitting on a table and they were amazingly excited. A touch of the rainbow By Jessica Anstice Students and teachers at Narre Warren North Primary School certainly lived up to the rainbow theme on Friday, 24 August. Junior School Council (JSC) organised a special day where everyone wore rainbow and sunflower colours in support of past teacher Lindsay Kennedy who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Her choice of charity was the McGrath Foundation. Around $750 was raised on the day and every bit of it was donated to the foundation. The JSC and school community are very
grateful for all the donations as this was the best fundraising effort Narre Warren North has made. ""The theme Rainbows and Sunflowers comes from Mrs Kennedy, as when she is feeling sad or having a bad day, she thinks of these things and it makes her feel a bit happier," teacher Stephanie Barker said. "It was fabulous to have so many children dress up in beautiful bright colours. "This was a real treat for Mrs Kennedy who visited for morning tea and had a photograph with the children before returning to class. Thank you to everyone who made the effort."

‘Colours’ for the cause By Jessica Anstice Berwick Pharmacy is encouraging local Geelong followers to join the Fight Cancer Foundation team and fight cancer this year with a Footy Colours Day fundraiser. During the month of September, Aussies are encouraged to show their true colours in support of children with cancer. With more than 800 Australian children and young people diagnosed with cancer every year, Footy Colours Day raises much needed funds for Fight Cancer Foundation's education support programs across Australia. On Friday 7 September, staff from Berwick and Eden Rise Pharmacy's, along with Liberal State Member for Gembrook, Brad Battin, will celebrate Footy Colours Day and raise funds for Fight Cancer Foundation. There will be raffles, jelly bean jar competitions, colouring competitions, a secondhand book stall and other hampers on offer - with all proceeds going to Fight Cancer Foundation.

Casey cares for the carers Carer's Day out at Bunjil Place on Friday, 24 August was a wonderful success with 75 people attending. The day included a light morning tea followed by songs from the Beatles in the Bunjil Place Theatre. After this, carers enjoyed lunch, which included activities such as Latin dancing, a photo booth and a presentation to each person with a red rose from Deputy Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon, as a token of council's gratitude for the work they undertake. Cr Rosalie Crestani also attended and spoke at the event. "Not only does being a carer make all the difference in the world to the people you care for, but together with the other 2.6 million carers in Australia, your unpaid work combined is worth more than $60 billion every year," Cr Stapledon said. "It's a massive contribution and all the
more reason why more support for you is so important. Each carer attending today has a story that is unique to their situation and it could be that you provide assistance to a family member, relative, friend or neighbour. "Whatever your situation we would like to acknowledge that your role as a carer is important to our community, and we would like to express our gratitude and celebrate your contributions. "It is hoped that beyond today you will continue to connect to your community and actively participate in the many activities available in the City of Casey and please come back again to Bunjil Place." Carers received a show bag containing information to support their caring role, and were given the chance to speak with local disability support agencies, and representatives from the NDIA and council.

Gippy’s new football era By Russell Bennett The West Gippsland Football Netball Competition will be expanded to include 12 clubs from next year under one of the proposed changes outlined in the AFL Gippsland Leagues and Competitions Review Draft Recommendations Report. Current South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) club Tooradin-Dalmore and Ellinbank and District Football League (EDFL) outfit Warragul Industrials look set to join the existing 10-club WGFNC from 2019. The AFL Gippsland region commission released the report late last week to clubs right across Gippsland. Among its key focuses is a smoother transition from junior to senior football, with the proposed introduction of an under-17 age group in place of existing age group structures in all but two of the region’s senior competitions for 2019. Gippsland League clubs would, for example, continue to field both under-16 and under-18 teams while the WGFNC and EDFL would revert to under-17s. Other proposed changes include the development of a standardised permit structure and approach to area agreements between leagues, as well as a formal process regarding the alignments between junior and senior clubs. AFL Gippsland region general manager Ben Joske said the changes would benefit clubs and relieve volunteers of some of the pressures associated with the recruitment and retention of players. “For the past 10 years participation numbers for players in the 15 to 18-year age bracket have remained quite consistent but below what is required for clubs to field a full com38 STAR NEWS

plement of teams in their respective competitions,” he said. “By streamlining junior structures we can reduce the number of times players need to play in multiple games on the one weekend and on permit to simply make up the necessary numbers.” The draft recommendations also propose the creation of a new junior competition in West Gippsland, and for the Alberton and Mid Gippsland leagues to come together to form the ‘Central and Southern Gippsland Competition’. Both of those new entities would be administered and governed by AFL Gippsland. Another proposed change includes the transfer of the Yarragon Football Netball Club to the EDFL. “The viability and sustainability of all clubs within the Gippsland region is at the heart of this review,” Joske said. “Having completed an extensive consultation process and analysed wide-ranging data it was clear several clubs would find it difficult to remain competitive under the current football structures and therefore changes needed to be considered.” An AFL Gippsland-appointed review panel initially conducted an online survey of 34 questions to which 97 clubs (75 per cent) responded, before conducting 119 interviews with clubs, groups and associations between May and July this year. The draft recommendations were presented to representatives from football and netball clubs, leagues and other key stakeholders at four separate locations across Gippsland on Friday night.

All clubs have been provided with a copy of the draft recommendations report and have until Friday, 14 September to provide their feedback. All submissions are to be made in writing (with a club letterhead) to info@aflgippsland.com.au. The final recommendations will then be handed down on Friday, 21 September with changes to be implemented in time for the 2019 season. Any affected stakeholders wanting to appeal against the implementation of the review recommendations must have their applications received by AFL Victoria by 28 September. The following areas were investigated as part of the Leagues and Competitions Review Draft Recommendations Report: database statistics, competition structures, league/governance/administration structures, netball structures, finance, umpires, facilities, volunteers, and travel. Some of the key findings out of the online survey and subsequent interviews with clubs, groups, and associations were: 100 per cent of Alberton Football Netball League clubs suggested the current six-team competition is not viable, 66 per cent of clubs want to remain in a league with all other AFNL clubs, and under-18 and under-16 numbers remain a concern in the WGFNC. Significantly though, the strong competitive balance across the league was also highlighted. The WGFNC is set to now include: Bunyip, Cora Lynn, Dalyston, Garfield, Inverloch Kongwak, Kilcunda Bass, Kooweerup, KorumburraBena, Nar Nar Goon, Phillip Island, TooradinDalmore, and the Warragul Industrials. The EDFL is set to include: Buln Buln,
Catani, Ellinbank, Lang Lang, Longwarry, Neerim Neerim South, Nilma Darnum, Nyora, Poowong and Yarragon. The Central & Southern Gippsland Competition (C&SGC) would include: Boolarra, Fish Creek, Foster, Hill End, Meeniyan Dumbalk United, Mirboo North, Morwell East, Newborough, Stony Creek, Tarwin, Thorpdale, Toora, Trafalgar, Yallourn-Yallourn North, and Yinnar. It is proposed for the clubs in the WGFNC, EDFL, and newly-formed C&SGC to compete in seniors, reserves, and under-17s. A new junior football league, known as the West Gippsland Junior Football Competition, is also set to launch in 2019. AFL Gippsland will also open discussions with Gippsland League clubs with a view to exploring the possibility of an East-West conference structure which could be implemented at a future date - possibly as early as 2020. Crucially, open discussions will also take place with AFL South East, AFL Outer East (Yarra Ranges), and interested clubs. Some of the 11 Netball Victoria recommendations as part of the report include: leagues currently running 13 & under competitions to consider finding alternate opportunities via Netball Victoria affiliated associations; leagues to consult with Netball Victoria when considering the introduction of any new competition, so as to determine the optimal outcome for netball; and AFL Gippsland to consider the balance of administration duties per competition or organisation within the Regional Administration Centre (RAC) and specifically appoint netball-dedicated administrators in consultation with Netball Victoria. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Rebecca earns her place By Nick Creely Every little thing counts in the world of triathlon. For Berwick local Rebecca Henderson, her determination to improve herself as an athlete comes down to those little things. Whether it's her diet, training or just a willingness to learn, the 17-year-old is destined for great heights. Rebecca will jet off the sunny Gold Coast on 13 September to represent her country in the 2018 ITU World Triathlon Championships - specifically in the sprint distant races - after successful qualifying race results recently. "It's really exciting - we had to do three qualifying races, and it was like a point system and the top people who had the most points got in," she said. "My first race was in Yarrawonga in September last year and I got second. I then went to Tasmania and won that one, and then I won the last one in Victoria, which was really good too." But the last few years have been a steep learning curve for her, and it's taken her time to master her craft. "When I started triathlon, I didn't really know how to ride a bike, I had to basically learn from scratch," she said. "I always knew how to swim and run, but it was the bike that took a while, I'm still learning after two years, but I'm getting better." While she prepares for her race - which will include a 750 metre swim, 20 kilometre bike ride and five kilometre run - she provided an insight into the difficulties with what is often perceived as one of the toughest sports on a mental and physical level. "You have to do everything right - if you miss putting on one shoe in transition you're out of the race," she said. "You just have to keep going, and keep go-

"My race is only an hour so it's not as long, but it's also still important to get plenty of fluid and keep hydrated. "I'm doing lots of training and I've just been doing more race specific stuff lately to get back into it all."
Rebecca's ambition can take her anywhere, but she wants to remain level headed and keep focusing on improving herself. "I'm just taking things one step at a time, but it'd be great to see how far I can get to in the sport," she said. As she prepares for what will be the biggest

Rob Wilson, a local cricket identity who has built the Casey Veterans, said the new relationship made sense, and explained the role cricket has on the lives of the men that are involved. "Our boys were quite unanimous about going to Endeavour Hills - it's been good, and we've started off on a good note. It just so happened that Jay (Stent) made enquiries about playing Over 60s cricket, and I didn't even know he was president, so it sort of just opened up from there," he said. "Our guys at our age, if we can get a game on a turf wicket, it's just cricket heaven - we weren't going to get that Narre North, and we are certainly looking forward to our partnership with Endeavour Hills. "Cricketers never lose their pride in what they can do, the graph is on the downward slope, but we still take pride in what we do, running, throwing, batting, bowling. You play for pride, but you still want to win the game. "The camaraderie on and off the ground is something you have to experience to know how good it is." Veterans Cricket is all about community. It provides men with an opportunity to stay healthy, forge friendships and still be involved in the competitive nature that all sportsmen crave. That's why the new partnership between the Endeavour Hills Cricket Club and Casey Veterans is a "good marriage" for men 60 years and over in the south-east. The new team - which will begin playing in early October - will be known as Casey Veterans-Endeavour Hills. Jay Stent - who is the current president of the Endeavour Hills Cricket Club - will put on the gear this year with the Veterans team, and is of the strong belief that it will only grow his club. "I think from a personal view, it's very selfish of me - I'll go from being the oldest guy in the team to the youngest guy, so I'll have to probably do the 12th man duties," he joked. "From a club perspective, we're a sub-district club and it's a really good level - we'll never compete with the Caulfields or Brightons, but to compete with the middle tier we need to build a stronger base, and the Vets coming over will help to develop that. "Our facilities are second to none, there wouldn't be too many clubs in Victoria with the facilities we have." But that community aspect - according to Stent - plays a huge role in the lives of men, and hopes that it will provide a positive outlet and safe environment for others in the community. "I think Veterans Cricket has a really strong role in community - I can nail into a bit of wood, but I don't want to spend ten hours a week at the Men's Shed - I think Men's Sheds are fantastic, and they serve a purpose, and I think cricket is the same thing," he said. "We can get together, play the game that we love, and have a bit of fun - I still believe there's going to be some competiveness in there, which is good, so from that point of view it's fantastic. "Men's health is always on the news, and I think a big part of that is men getting together and sharing stories, and giving each other crap. Men need a reason to do things, and they
